A LETTER FROM THE
EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
Michael C. Russell, CAE Executive Director
Do you believe in miracles? Yes!" These iconic words by Al Michaels resonate deeply with us as we reflect on the past 12 months. In the heart of our community, where hope meets determination, the Liberty Hospital Foundation has been a beacon of light, transforming lives and fostering resilience. Over the past year, our commitment to health, education, wellness, and care has created ripples of positive change, touching countless lives and leaving an indelible mark on our community. Let us take you on a journey through a year filled with milestones, miracles, and moments of profound impact.
The TreeHouse, a sanctuary for families in times of medical need, has seen increased occupancy rates, welcoming our 49,000th guest! Inching us closer to 50,000 guests. This milestone reflects the trust and reliance our community places in us during their most challenging times. Additionally, the O'Dell Community Room, established less than six months ago, has already hosted over 150 events, fostering community engagement and support. The Community room is now the home of so many community groups!
Our Patient Assistance Program has been a lifeline, serving 1,503 patients this year—an impressive
increase from previous years. The provision of 988 patient rides, 548 more than last year, highlights our commitment to ensuring that no one misses a crucial appointment due to transportation barriers.
Education is a cornerstone of our mission, and this year, we've awarded over $30,000 in scholarships. These funds have empowered students to pursue their dreams in healthcare, ensuring a brighter future for all. The impact of these scholarships is profound, opening doors to opportunities that might have otherwise remained closed.
Our sponsorship of 15 hospital events and celebrations this year
has brought our community closer, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose. These events not only celebrate achievements but also provide vital support to those we serve.
Our Kyleigh's Gift program continues to provide unparalleled support to our youngest and most vulnerable patients, providing 1575 Sleep Sacks, 390 diaper packs, and so much more. This year, we were proud to grant $165,000 to enhance the care and peace of mind for families at Liberty Hospital. This funding ensures that every newborn and their family receive the best possible start.
As we close this chapter on an extraordinary year, we look forward to the future with renewed optimism and unwavering commitment. The Liberty Hospital Foundation will continue to be a pillar of strength, compassion, and innovation, ensuring that our community thrives in health, education, wellness, and care. Thank you for being an integral part of our journey, and for believing in the power of collective effort to create a brighter tomorrow. Together, we are making miracles happen, YES!
Cheers to another great year ahead,
Michael C. Russell, CAE Executive Director
WHO IS THE
Together with our key programs: the TreeHouse, Kyleigh’s Gift, Patient Assistance, Hughes Family Assistance, scholarships, and so much more, the Liberty Hospital Foundation aims to create a bridge between health, education, wellness, and care in the Liberty Hospital community.
The Foundation is a huge part of where I am today. In 2014, the Foundation started a partnership with William Jewell College. I applied for that BSN scholarship, and I was able to complete higher education. Having these opportunities through the Foundation is a wonderful resource.”
The Foundation regularly works with Liberty Hospital to ensure that the talented employees at the Hospital are able to pursue continuing education that are not limited by financial barriers. Together, we recognize that investing in employees helps grow the Hospital.
Gretchen Britt BSN, Rn, CHCIO-E, CDH-L
Five years ago, when I had my first radiation treatments, I was fortunate enough to live only 10 miles away from the hospital. But last year, when I was diagnosed with cancer again, we were in the process of moving to Maryville, Missouri. We had already sold our home, and the new owners needed immediate possession. If it weren't for the Treehouse, we would have had a four hour round-trip drive each day. Being able to stay at the Treehouse was such a blessing, and it took so much stress off us.”
Since reopening, the TreeHouse has impacted over 49,000 families who have stayed at the TreeHouse.
Barbara Wiederholt cancer survivor & TreeHouse volunteer
Without the option of Patient Assistance through the Foundation, I would not have been able to afford antibiotics after treatment.”
The Patient Assistance Program is one of the five major programs the Foundation utilizes to give back to under and uninsured patients at Liberty Hospital. In 2023–2024, the Foundation helped 1,503 patients, an increase of 259 patients.

The Liberty Hospital Foundation sponsors many education initiatives and scholarships.
This program celebrates employees and also supports employees in need of extra assistance.
Volunteers organizing 44,000 diapers
Every year, Kyleigh’s Gift holds a Diaper Drive to coincide with Kyleigh’s birthday, April 5. Since the Diaper Drive began in 2015, over 250,000 diapers have been collected and given to families in need.
Finishing the remaining scope for the TreeHouse capital campaign.
On June 17 th we held a diaper packing party at the TreeHouse. Hospital staf f and community volunteers helped package up over 44,000 diapers into 590 diaper packs for families in need at the Birthing Center. Each pack c ontains 75 diapers and information about the Foundation and the Kyleigh’s Gift pro gram. Thanks to everyone who helped with all aspects of the diaper drive thi s year!
Meal Vouchers for NICU Families We distributed 709 meal vouchers for families with infants in the NICU, an increase in 264 vouchers from last year. These vouchers can be used at the hospital’s cafeteria which allows NICU parents to stay in the hospital while getting something to eat.
Diaper Bundles for Families in Need We distributed 392 diaper bundles to qualifying parents whose babies were born at the Liberty Hospital Birthing Center, an increase of 37 bundles from last year. This gesture of providing one month’s worth of diapers helps provide a sense of security to families.
Perinatal Infant Loss One of the most important aspects of Kyleigh’s Gift is the support and information that is provided to families who have experienced infant loss. This includes specific information for mothers, fathers, siblings, and grandparents. These resources were utilized 118 times this past year.
$165,000 Infant Security Upgrade
The Liberty Hospital Foundation awarded its largest grant in its history - $165,000 – to the Liberty Hospital Birthing Center. The grant provides a technologically advanced upgrade to the robust safety and security systems and procedures already in place.
We are always committed to the safety and security of our tiniest patients. This new state-of-the-art technology system in our Birthing Center elevates our premier security to the next level. We appreciate the dedication the Liberty Hospital Foundation has for the safety and security of our Northland babies and families. ”
Raghu Adiga, MD president and CEO
The Foundation awarded the grant as part of its Kyleigh’s Gift program’s mission to provide health, education, and reswwources to the Birthing Center. The highly responsive system uses RFID technology to monitor the combination of heartbeat and heat to detect infant safety and automatically initiates security protocols to prevent any unauthorized movement of newborns.
Thanks to the generosity and support of our donors and amazing supporters, this significant investment ensures that Liberty Hospital remains at the forefront of technology. Our commitment to providing state-of-the-art care for our community's most vulnerable patients is stronger than ever. ”

Meet Raley Raley Anzelone, RN, Birthing Center, was the DAISY Award Recipient for Liberty Hospital earlier this year. Raley is a mom to two daughters, ages five and two. Raley has lived in Liberty her whole life, and also graduated from nursing school locally. She has worked at Liberty Hospital for five years; she started on postpartum mother-baby and moved to labor and delivery. “I always knew that I wanted to be an OB Nurse,” Raley exclaims. “My cousin had his baby, and it was a long process and as a close family, I had the opportunity to be in the delivery room. After spending that day with my family in the delivery room, I noticed how wonderful the nurses were who cared for not only the baby but the whole family. After that, I knew my calling. ”
Q: What is your favorite part of being a Birthing Center Nurse?
A: “Being able to experience couples in their first moments becoming parents is such a special encounter that I get to witness every day,” says Raley. “The look on their face after delivery is something so magical.” Raley loves that she can help families navigate all of the emotions in labor and delivery from uncertainty to pure joy. “You get to bond with your patients so much. On day shift, I am able to labor my patient most of the day, and I’m in and out of the room constantly. It’s a uniquely exciting and special time to be involved in someone’s life, and I am privileged that these patients are mine even for a little while. It might just be another shift for us, but to them, this is the most important day of their lives.”
Q: Tell us your about how you felt when you received your DAISY Award?
A: “It’s hard for me to keep it together when I tell this story,” Raley recalls, emotionally. “I
remember that patient. It was such a sad day for her and her family. I left that day and thinking about all the things I didn’t do for her, or that I couldn’t do for her. I remember thinking of what I could have done better. Days go by, and those experiences never leave you. Fast forward, when I found out I had won a DAISY award, I still remember her name and her face, and all the tears. This proves, and gives all nurses a reason, to be a rock for your patient. How you treat them really does have a lasting impact.”
Q: What certification did you complete with your DAISY Award scholarship?
A: Part of the DAISY Award benefits include eligibility to apply for an ANCC certification or renewal at a special rate of $200. The Liberty Hospital Foundation helps sponsor this scholarship for DAISY Award winners if they choose to get a certification. Raley received her Inpatient Obstetric Nursing Certification, RNCOB. “I had been wanting to receive more specialized training for a while. I was not sure how I was going to pay for additional education, but with scholarships through the Hospital and Foundation, it was possible for me to complete it. I was able to get my study materials and test paid for which was so helpful.” This intensive certification helped Raley learned more about specific higher-risk patients and how to help administer better care in different situations.
Nurses every day go above and beyond to not only provide patients and families with excellence in clinical care but also compassion. At The DAISY Foundation, we aim to honor them by showing our profound gratitude for all that they do.
The DAISY Award is a recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers. It is run by our partners as a way to thank nurses for the care and kindness they provide.”
I had just gotten transferred from the ER after delivering my baby halfway through my pregnancy at 16 weeks. The minute I was in labor and delivery she was waiting outside my door to greet us. From that moment until her shift was over she was amazing. This was my first birth, and she answered any and all questions. She helped me in anything I needed and had so much compassion for us in this terrible moment. I hope and pray I have her for any future deliveries I have. Every single family member and friend that were with me that night raved about how amazing she was. And multiple of them are medical staff as well. I know this wasn’t only a difficult situation for my family and I. But also for all of the staff that helped. Especially Raley- she was in the trenches with me. We’re eternally thankful.”
Meet Wilma Ashley was a nurse navigator for Wilma starting in 2022 when she came to the Breast Care Center for a biopsy. The results came back with a high-risk lesion. After follow-up imaging, she came back to have another biopsy. When she drove in, Wilma was able to use a gas card from the Foundation’s Patient Assistance Program. Shortly after, Wilma was diagnosed with breast cancer. During her surgery, follow-ups and care at Liberty Hospital, Wilma created dozens of paintings that she gave to her surgeons, nurses and staff at the Breast Care Center. Wilma strictly does this for fun; she does not ask anything in return, it is her way of spreading joy and love. Ashley has developed a very special relationship with Wilma throughout her treatment and after; Wilma often calls Ashley to tell her that she loves her and is thinking about her. Over the course of her surgery, follow-ups, and treatment, she started bringing in bags that had framed art for all of the staff. “She has always been so grateful for the care she has gotten here,” Ashley said. “Even through other health concerns, she said she has chosen to come back to Liberty because all of the staff has taken such great care of her.”
The Patient Assistance Program through the Liberty Hospital
Foundation supports patients like Wilma, giving individuals and families “one less worry” when going through difficult times.
Ashley works out of the Breast Care Center. As the navigator, Ashley starts working with patients when there is a potential or suspicion that the individual could have cancer and needs a biopsy. Ashley works on follow-ups to ensure scheduled procedures were completed. She calls patients with their pathology and goes through those results, and if it is concerning, she helps them navigate their cancer journey: setting up appointments, making sure it’s done in a timely fashion, and completes follow-ups to allow for surgery or treatment schedules. She continues to care for patients after surgery or treatments making sure that the patient has the support they need. Ashley can link patients to various support groups and resources for patients who inquire, helping to treat the mental wellness of patients in tandem with education and answering questions.
Ashley started her career at Liberty in nursing school, she completed her senior capstone on the surgical oncology floor. A few years after completing her degree, Ashley started working at Liberty Hospital on the surgical oncology floor, now working as a nurse navigator ever since the position first opened. “Liberty Hospital still has a small-town feel. I grew up in Cameron, so I appreciate that,” Ashley notes. “Liberty is a big enough to offer a lot of
resources but small enough that when I walk down the hall, I know a lot of people and they know me. I like that personal feel.”
Ashley is one of the Foundation’s biggest advocates as a nurse navigator. She makes sure that patients know about the TreeHouse, as many patients she knows have stayed there before and during treatment. “A lot of our patients travel hours from here. When you start talking about radiation therapy, the travel can be hard on individuals. So many of our oncology patients are a large demographic who use the TreeHouse and it adds a personal touch to patient care.”
With the new Breast Cancer Center at Liberty Hospital, the most immediate positive change was the ability to see more patients with more equipment. “We have the opportunity to do mammograms on women and provide surgery and treatment closer to home for individuals,” Ashley said. There have been a lot of updates in technology that have helped pinpoint patient care more efficiently. Ashley explains that, “when we get certain pathologies back, based on the latest research on biomarkers, we can know a personalized plan for imaging, treatment or surgery in different orders depending on each individual’s needs.”
Ashley also explained a typical journey for a patient at the Breast Care Center. “Most patients start out as a mammogram needing imaging. From here, the imaging either denotes suspicion or it looks fine. Once a suspicious screening is denoted, we schedule a biopsy and review the pathology. A majority of breast cancer’s first step is surgery. But there are certain pathologies that would need chemotherapy or systemic therapy first. After surgery, the patient would see the oncologist, and maybe a radiologist. From here they might go from chemotherapy to radiation and perhaps endocrine therapy.” One large misconception, Ashley explained, is that not every cancer patient needs chemotherapy, “now there’s testing available that shows not every patient needs this course of treatment, it is pretty mind blowing!” “However,” says Ashley, ” taking chemotherapy and radiation treatment can cut possible reoccurrence in half in some instances, which is amazing in terms of technological advancements.”
Thank you, Ashley, for sharing your experience with patients, your journey as a nurse navigator, and insight on the journey of cancer patients.”
Despite being closed earlier this year during construction, the TreeHouse is being utilized at a greater rate than in previous years.
The TreeHouse Basement has been reimagined from an unused and u nfinished space to a community room. Over 150 meetings have been held in 6 months since opening to Hospital employees and community organizations This is a free space and resource to our local community.

If you have never been in a position to receive help from the Hughes Assistance program that is available to Liberty Hospital employees then you are probably aren’t aware of the impact that they can have on an individual or a family. I am one of the recipients of the program and this is my story: my husband was diagnosed with a treatable but not curable cancer a few years ago. It had been maintained but he unfortunately suffered a relapse in January 2023 which would ultimately result in a stem cell transplant at the end of that year. A stem cell transplant essentially requires at minimum 30 days of isolation from everyone except for the patients caregiver and one daily appointment to the BMT clinic for monitoring and whatever treatment might be necessary that day based on lab work. The patient cannot work during that time unless they are a remoter worker which my husband was not. He is a selfemployed brick/stone mason. The caregiver (me) is required to be with the patient 24/7 so they too are unable to work unless they are a remote worker which fortunately I was going to be allowed to do until the cyber security event changed that. I did have some vacation but not enough to get me through the full 30 days. I missed one full week of work that was not covered by PDO which gave me a small paycheck. When I was able to return to work, I found that I had been paid one week more PDO than I actually had so I needed to pay that back which resulted in another very small paycheck. With
my husband unable to earn and my 2 very short back to back paychecks, it goes without saying that we were struggling to keep on every day bills like utilities, mortgage, grocery etc. Because of the Hughes Assistance program I was able to pay my mortgage. Without them, I don’t know what I would have done. I did not have funds to pay it. While things were still financially difficult for us, it was an incredible relief to be able to take care of the mortgage that month. My husband and I are grateful to the Hughes Assistance program.”
Anonymous
Hughes Family Assistance Recipient
As a recipient of the Hughes family assistance grant, I cannot say enough about how this changed our circumstances. My husband was diagnosed with Leukemia at the end of the November and life went from great to crazy in a short 24 hours. Without the program I would not have been able to pay my house or car payment the first month that he was in the hospital as I had to take time off work, and he was on short term disability taking his pay down to 70% per paycheck. Thank you for helping all employees in need. This program made a huge difference in our stress level and let us concentrate on what’s important.”
Anonymous Hughes Family Assistance Recipient
In January of 2024, the Hospital experienced a cyber security incident that unexpectedly impacted many departments. During this time, the Foundation secured many community donations in the form of additional Hugh es Family Assistance Funding, and provided meals to employees going the e xtra mile.
Loretta and I give to the Liberty Hospital Foundation because of the Foundation’s commitment to compassion and caring in everything they do, from The Tree House, to Kyleigh’s Gift, to educational grants and scholarships, to the Patient Assistance Fund and to the Hughes Family Assistance Fund.
The Foundation is committed to responding to the needs of Liberty Hospital employees, Liberty Hospital patients and their families.
As a personal example of the Foundation’s commitment to compassionate caring, let us focus on the Hughes Family Assistance Fund. Charlie was Director of Social Services at Liberty Hospital for 31 years. In honor of his retirement in 2012, the Foundation established the Hughes Family Assistance Fund. It was created by generous gifts from Hospital President and CEO, David Feese, Liberty Hospital employees and the Foundation Board of Trustees. Today the fund is maintained with ongoing gifts from Liberty Hospital employees through the annual employee giving program, as well as donations made by friends of the hospital and community members.
The employee family assistance fund exists to offer financial assistance with family crises including loss of home due to fire or natural disasters, loss of an immediate family member, a devastating illness, paying utilities to avoid shutoff, and gift cards for groceries.
This assistance is an important way the Foundation helps foster a sense of family for the Liberty Hospital family. Employees know, “if a crisis enters my life, someone has my back so I can focus on doing my job to the best of my ability with caring and compassion.” This makes everyone a winner, the individual who donates, the individual who receives assistance during their crisis and the patient who receives compassionate care because the employee can focus on doing their best work.
Regular giving to the Liberty Hospital Foundation is a priority and privilege for us. This is why we give!
