This year, Liberty Hill Foundation marks an extraordinary milestone: 50 years of building power, investing in communities, and standing alongside the people and movements shaping a more just Los Angeles.
This anniversary is a moment to reflect, but also to give thanks. We are grateful to the organizers, partners, donors, board members, staff, and movement leaders who have carried this work forward across generations. Liberty Hill’s story has never been about any one person or institution. It has always been about what becomes possible when people join in common purpose and shared belief.
Liberty Hill began in 1976 as a bold experiment in philanthropy. Our founders saw an opportunity for resources to flow differently. They believed that communities closest to injustice should have a real voice in shaping solutions, and that grassroots organizing was worthy of long-term trust and investment.
That belief remains at the heart of who we are today.
Over the past 50 years, that commitment has helped seed and sustain movements that have reshaped Los Angeles. Together, this community has supported organizing that advanced housing justice, environmental justice, youth justice, LGBTQ+ justice, and new visions of a multi-racial democracy. We have invested in leaders, backed bold ideas, nurtured coalitions, and stood with communities through moments of urgency, resistance, and hard-won progress.
What has always distinguished Liberty Hill is not only what we fund, but how we
understand our role. We are here to help build lasting power — to invest in the people, relationships, and infrastructure that allow movements not only to win, but to endure. We believe the future of Los Angeles depends on the leadership, wisdom, and vision of the people most impacted by injustice.
That work feels as urgent today as ever.
Every day, our partners and communities continue to show what real leadership looks like: protecting tenants from displacement, fighting for young people to be supported rather than punished, building healthier neighborhoods, and advancing solutions grounded in dignity, care, and collective power.
As we celebrate this milestone year, we do so with our eyes on the horizon. Fifty years is not only a chance to honor where we have been, but to ask what we are building now for the generations to come.

Anne Mendel, Win McCormack, Sarah Pillsbury, & Larry Janss
In 1975, four young people with inherited wealth gathered for a picnic in Topanga Canyon to imagine a different way to give. That conversation led Anne Mendel, Win McCormack, Sarah Pillsbury, and Larry Janss to create Liberty Hill Foundation in 1976.
It was a bold philanthropic experiment rooted in a simple but radical belief: the people closest to injustice should help shape the solutions.
They built an institution committed to addressing root causes and trusting grassroots leadership. They helped establish Liberty Hill’s defining approach: catalytic early funding, deep partnership with organizers, and a groundbreaking Community Funding Board to shift grantmaking power toward the community.
In Liberty Hill’s early days, that vision helped seed movements for racial justice, housing, environmental justice, immigrant rights, LGBTQ+ justice, labor, and anti-nuclear organizing, while laying the groundwork for what would become one of the most enduring movement institutions in Los Angeles.
Fifty years later, their vision still shapes Liberty Hill’s work. Their legacy is evident not only in the institution they launched, but also in the generations of organizers, donor-activists, and community leaders who continue to carry it forward.

Eric Garcetti Ambassador, Global Climate Diplomacy
Eric Garcetti is a leader, educator, diplomat, and public servant whose career has been defined by bringing people together to build healthier, more just, and more prosperous communities. He currently serves as Ambassador for Global Climate Diplomacy for C40 Cities, representing cities in international climate negotiations and advancing urban leadership on the climate crisis.
From 2023 to 2025, Garcetti served as U.S. Ambassador to India, where he helped deepen ties between the world’s two largest democracies across trade, education, health, defense, and peopleto-people exchange.
A fourth-generation Angeleno, Garcetti spent more than two decades in elected office in Los Angeles, including 12 years on the City Council and six as Council
President. In 2013, he was elected the youngest mayor in Los Angeles history and was re-elected in 2017 by the widest margin in the city’s history.
Garcetti’s public service record includes landmark work on climate, labor standards, parks, affordable housing, civic equity, and access to opportunity. He also helped secure Los Angeles’s successful bid to host the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Tonight, we are pleased to welcome Eric Garcetti as emcee for Liberty Hill’s 50th Anniversary Upton Sinclair Dinner. His long record of public leadership, civic vision, and commitment to Los Angeles makes him a fitting guide for an evening celebrating five decades of solidarity, progress, and community power.

Angélica Salas Executive Director CHIRLA
Angélica Salas is one of the nation’s most respected immigrant rights leaders and a transformative force in Los Angeles organizing. An immigrant from Durango, Mexico, she came to the United States as a child to reunite with her parents and experienced undocumented life, deportation, and legalization firsthand. That lived experience has shaped a lifetime commitment to immigrant justice.
Salas joined CHIRLA in 1995 and became Executive Director in 1999, growing the organization into one of the country’s largest and most effective immigrant-led institutions.
Under her leadership, CHIRLA has advanced major local, state, and national victories for immigrant communities, including expanded access to legal
services, day laborer centers that became national models, drivers’ licenses for undocumented Californians, and critical wins for undocumented students and immigrant families. She has also played a national leadership role in immigration reform efforts and helped build influential coalitions including the Fair Immigration Reform Movement and the National Partnership for New Americans.
A graduate of Occidental College and recipient of an honorary doctorate from her alma mater, Salas has spent decades turning courage into policy, organizing into power, and immigrant communities into a decisive force for justice.
Tonight, we are honored to welcome her as a speaker whose leadership reflects the very spirit of people power that Liberty Hill has championed for 50 years.

Joanna Jackson President & CEO Weingart Foundation
Joanna Jackson is a philanthropic leader whose work is rooted in a deep commitment to racial justice, transformation, and the belief that philanthropy can help drive real change. With more than 25 years of experience across the nonprofit, philanthropic, and public sectors, she became President & CEO of the Weingart Foundation in June 2024 after serving in multiple leadership roles there since 2008.
Prior to Weingart, she held roles at the U.S. Fund for UNICEF, The California Endowment, the City of San Jose, and other mission-driven organizations. She also serves on the boards of Southern California Grantmakers and Grantmakers for Effective Organizations.
Under Jackson’s leadership, Weingart Foundation continues to advance racial, social, and economic justice across
Southern California through trustbased, multi-year support, movement infrastructure, impact investing, and cross-sector partnership. Her vision of philanthropy is grounded in love, justice, and transformation. She has spoken powerfully about the need to align not only grantmaking, but also institutional practice and capital, with the communities most impacted by inequity. That approach has helped position Weingart as a leader in trust-based and justice-centered philanthropy.
A proud graduate of Spelman College and Baruch College, Jackson brings both strategic rigor and moral clarity to her work. Tonight, Liberty Hill honors Joanna Jackson for helping model the kind of philanthropy our movements need: courageous, accountable, and rooted in partnership with community.
1976-1989: Taking Root: The Evolution of Liberty Hill
Liberty Hill began as a bold experiment in social justice philanthropy — one rooted in the belief that community voices, not traditional gatekeeping, should shape where resources flow.

1990–2005: Building Power to Win
As movements across Los Angeles grew stronger and more connected, Liberty Hill invested in the infrastructure needed to win lasting change, helping coalitions move from isolated victories to structural reform.
Liberty Hill backed organizing that advanced labor, immigrant, reproductive, and housing justice.
1997: The Living Wage Coalition secured a landmark ordinance raising wages for over 10,000 workers.
Donor learning tours connected supporters to frontline communities.
2006–2016: Investing in Enduring Power
During this era, Liberty Hill expanded its role as a backbone institution, investing not only in campaigns, but in the people, leadership, and relationships needed for movements to last.
Leadership development became a core strategy for building power.
Programs like the Wally Marks Leadership Institute invested in leaders shaping LA’s future.
2006: Liberty Hill grantees help lead one of the largest immigrant rights mobilizations in Los Angeles history.

Ready to Rise expanded community-based alternatives to youth incarceration.

2017: The Agenda for a Just Future sharpened Liberty Hill’s focus on youth, housing, and environmental justice.
