FROM THE PUBLISHER
Whether you’ve lived in Liberty County for a day or a lifetime, we’re excited you are here! Whether you’ve lived in Liberty County for a day or a lifetime, we’re excited you are here! We guarantee that our unique perspective on the community, presented here in our Membership Directory and Magazine will offer you an intriguing and engaging perspective on a place we love. Whether it’s our cover story featuring local resident, Shayla Parker or the editorial look on the long-time relationship of Mayor James and Claudia Thomas, we guarantee that you will learn something new and possibly fall in love with this wonderful place all over again. We focused a lot in this magazine on business because as a Chamber that is what we support and who we serve. Both new and existing we want them in Liberty County, and we want them to be prosperous. We have a feature some of the Farm to Table opportunities in Liberty County and local businesses who offer those types of products, as well as look at Gary Walker, a past Chamber Chairman, not once, but twice! We have also given you some truly noteworthy and astoundingly beautiful photography courtesy of Joanna NG Photography and Key Marie Photography, as well as some of our own in-house efforts. Liberty County is rich in both history and culture, with three signers of the Declaration of Independence, a Revolutionary War fort with the original earthen works, Dorchester Academy where Civil Rights leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. came to plan important marches like the ones that took place in Selma, AL and so much more. We have the original rice dikes as Leconte Woodmanston Plantation, beautiful camellia gardens in the historic district of Allenhurst and one of the most picturesque coastlines on the eastern seaboard. Those of us who are native to the county are fond of telling newcomers and old timers alike that there is always something to do, something new to see or explore, however, these adventures that await you will take a little searching on your part, and the Chamber is an excellent place to start mapping out your trek! With an active website at www.libertycounty.org, a Facebook page at Liberty Chamber and Twitter where we are @LibertyCChamber, there are many ways to get plugged in and get active! We are also home to the 3rd ID and Fort Stewart, the largest military installation east of the Mississippi River, with 20,000+ soldiers in residence at any given moment. Formed as Camp Stewart during the advent of World War II, soldiers from our military installation have fought in every major conflict since. Our pride and commitment to making our soldiers and their families at home is rock solid, much like their go to phrase “Rock of the Marne!”

The move towards eating and being healthier is nothing new; however, in recent years making sure to purchase food locally and sustainably grown has become increasingly important. Called the “farm-to-table” movement, this is a system of delivering food to local consumers that works to build more locally based, selfreliant food economies. So that sustainable food production, processing, distribution and consumption are integrated to enhance the overall economic, environmental and social health of a particular location. Currently, if you are not purchasing your food locally, the average meal has traveled 1,500 miles to get on your dinner table. In the late spring of 2010, the Hinesville Downtown Development Authority launched the Hinesville Downtown Farmers’ Market which “is designed to provide our community with the ability to purchase fresh, homegrown produce and products from local area growers in a culturally diverse setting that strengthens the local economy and enhances our quality of life.” Since its establishment the market has grown to include special events including the 2nd Thursday Night in the park which features live music from local musicians. The market has also grown to offer a well-rounded vendor base with products that can include grass-fed beef, fresh bread, home-grown produce, cheeses, pasta,

handmade candies and chocolates, honey and much more. Why should you eat local you ask? Because! Typically locally grown food is much fresher, with fruits and vegetables harvested within 24 hours of being purchased. It also usually tastes better because produce picked and eaten at the height of freshness just tastes better. It also helps with our regional economic health. Buying food locally keep money in the community which contributes to the health of all sectors of the local economy, increasing our local quality of life. When you buy direct from a local farmer it keeps those dollars within the community and strengthens our local economy. On average a farmer can make $0.90 of every dollar, thus preserving farming as a livelihood. As mergers in the food industry have increased, the portion of your dollar paid to farmers has decreased. On average vegetable farmers only earn $0.21 of each dollar, the other $0.79 goes to pay for marketing, distribution and other associated costs. There are also environmental impacts like energy conservation because buying locally decreases dependence on petroleum, which is a non-renewable energy source. Buying from local producers conserves additional energy at the distribution level. It also offers a step towards regional food self-reliance. A dependency on far away food sources leaves a region vulnerable to supply disruptions. Liberty County Magazine

In Liberty County you have the option of purchasing from the Hinesville Downtown Farmers’ Market which opens in May and closes in November. There are also several community garden projects in the works thanks to Keep Liberty Beautiful. If you’d like to get involved with one of those projects and volunteer you can call KLB at 912.880.4888. There are also numerous “you pick” farms that are in the area, for a list of those you can check out www.pickyourown.org. One right here in Liberty County that is infamous for their amazing blueberries is Brewer’s Christmas Tree-Blueberry Farm who can be reached at 912.884.5292. Brewer’s has blueberries, persimmons and of course, award winning Christmas trees. And another option is to visit one of our veteran businesses, Farmer’s Natural Foods. They carry grassfed beef, pastured pork and free range poultry and organic vegetables based on the season. You can reach them at 912.368.7803 if you would like to find out more about their products and offerings. Foods of the Farm in Midway also serves lunch daily made from locally sourced products. LCM

A modern word for an old fashioned couple. Mayor James Thomas and Claudia Thomas discuss the secrets to their married success, all while dancing the night away. 20
Liberty County Magazine
written by Leah Poole photography by Key Marie Photography
A very modern word for a very old fashioned and cute couple, “besties,” is defined by the urban dictionary as, “friends who have each other’s backs, look out for each other, spend lots of time together and are just really good friends.” When asked the secret to a successful marriage Mayor James Thomas laughs lightly, all the while looking lovingly into his wife’s eyes, and says, “You have to be best friends.” For a man who has been married 50 years come December 21, 2014, he would be the one to know. “You have to spend time together, take the time to talk and really enjoy each other,” said Claudia Thomas, who said she wholeheartedly agrees with James that being “besties” is the key ingredient to a long marriage. Claudia also said she has found that having good manners, even with each other is important. “James has very old school manners, his dad was the same way, being the only son he was encouraged to follow in his father’s footsteps, and he did by always being a gentleman.” Having seen the Mayor walk in the rain so that his wife could remain covered by the only umbrella present, we can certainly attest to his inherent skills as an honorable man. Having been one of four children, Claudia is used to a big family. They had four children themselves, three that live locally and one that lives in Texas. They also have multiple grandchildren and one great grandchild who is, “Six years old, going on 35,” said James. The couple enjoys doing many things together, often reserving Saturday as “their” day, whether that means they sit around and read, Liberty County Magazine

garden, dance to some Motown sound (back in the day Claudia admits that they could really “boogie”) or go visit friends and family. Spending time together is very important to the Thomas’ and something that they have made a priority in their marriage even if that means missing other so called “important” things. “It’s important to like each other and be able to put up with the other person’s quirks, you can’t make marriage work if you don’t like the person. In my case, she (Claudia) puts up with a lot,” James says. He further acknowledges that Claudia makes his life a much happier, sunnier existence when she wakes up laughing and smiling every single morning . “I like it,” he said with a special twinkle in his eye. James said that he feels taking pride in what you do, whether that is working outside the home or within is very important, as well as respecting what the other spouse contributes. “Claudia always takes such pride in her cooking, there is nothing she doesn’t make well,” he said. He even admitted that if one of the kids did not care for something she would go so far as to cook different meals, taking her commitment to her family very seriously. With a particular fondness for banana pudding, James admits that Claudia’s recipe is superior, however, nothing will ever beat his mother’s. “Claudia’s a cookbook collector, she has between 3,000-4,000, I know, I counted,” of course as he admits this she is shaking her head that it is not true. Coming from the man who has moved said books multiple times he seems fairly concrete in his count.
No matter how loving the couple, we all find little things that begin to bother us after a while and these two are no different. “He doesn’t close the dresser drawers all the way,” Claudia admits. “I’m a minimalist, she likes to have everything,” said James. But they both admit that you learn to live with those little things and move on to make the marriage stronger. Stationed at Fort Stewart, the couple decided to stay because the people of Liberty County seemed very friendly to them and the community seemed a good environment to raise their young family. When asked about being the Mayor of Hinesville and the First Lady (if you will) for the last two terms, the couple admits that they have both enjoyed the experience. “I don’t meet a stranger,” said Claudia as she tells a story about a former Fort Stewart General unintentionally absconding with a plate from her dish set that did not get returned for over six months. “I didn’t mind at all, but we always got a laugh every time we saw each other.” “I really think my military training and background helped me in my position as Mayor to lead effectively,” said James. He also admitted that he enjoyed meeting so many different types of people, getting to represent the place that he calls home and helping others see the value of such a great community. To finish how we started here, these two definitely find each other to be the LOMF (love of my life) and while we may sit here and SMH (shake my head) in disbelief, they are LOL (laughing out loud) at our inability to see how easy it could be! ndustrial sector employment in Liberty County has grown consistently for more than 30 years, even when the nation lost manufacturing jobs to automation and off-shoring. Today, manufacturing and distribution operations within Liberty County employ more than 3,000 workers, and businesses project continued growth. Recruiting new businesses and assisting existing industries with expansions are the core functions of the Liberty County Development Authority (LCDA). Created in 1958, its mission its to develop and promote industry for the public good and welfare of the county. “Each industry contributes to the economic vitality of Liberty County and surrounding areas,” says LCDA CEO Ronald E. Tolley. “The manufacturers and distributors in our industrial parks have created lucrative careers with opportunities for advancement.” Of the county’s top 15 employers, six are industries: SNF Holding Company, Target regional distribution center, Interstate Resources LLC, Firth Rixson Forgings LLC, Hugo Boss and International Greetings USA. Employers offer a plethora of jobs for veterans, military spouses and area natives alike. Positions include welders, machinists, press operators and engineers. Liberty’s newest industry, Pactra International Co. Ltd./ Hankook Tire, created more than 30 jobs when it launched a distribution operation in January 2014 that provides Hankook Tire products to 10 southeastern states. Such employment opportunities are made possible by foreign direct investment in Liberty County, with seven industries and 70 percent of jobs tied to companies headquartered overseas.
Liberty County’s largest industrial employer, SNF Holding Co., is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of water-soluble polymers serving municipal, industrial and wastewater treatment industries. The company employs more than 1,500 at its Riceboro plant.
GROWING GLOBALLY IN LIBERTY COUNTY Location, a strong labor force, development-ready industrial parks and a business-friendly climate all make Liberty County attractive to industries. The Liberty County Development Authority actively markets its Tradeport Business Center, located near Midway and less than one mile from Interstate 95, a major north-south corridor. The Port of Savannah, the nation’s fastest-growing and fourthlargest container port, is located only 30 minutes from Liberty County. The port is known for its balanced ratio of exports to imports, and it enables Liberty industries to export goods to countries such as Argentina, Canada, China, India, Japan, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, and Spain. Local businesses also enjoy proximity to the Savannah Hilton Head International Airport, Interstate 16, and railway access through CSX-served Riceboro Southern Shortline. Liberty County is proud to claim two Georgia Ready for Accelerated Development
(GRAD) parks, Tradeport East and Tradeport West, which have been certified by the Georgia Allies, a public-private partnership focused on economic development marketing. Tradeport East, comprised of 1,500 usable acres, offers Foreign Trade Zone (FTZ) and Opportunity Zone benefits. The park is a public-private partnership between the Liberty County Development Authority and IDI, a full-service real estate development firm that is consistently ranked in the top five industrial developers. Tradeport East is already home to anchor tenants like Target’s 1.5 million-square-foot retail regional

On the west side of Interstate 95 located adjacent to U.S. 17, Tradeport West offers 1,900 usable acres with FTZ designation and large rail sites. The park is adjacent to the established Midway Industrial Park that includes facilities for Elan Technology, Hugo Boss, International Greetings, SNF Floquip, and TrussMart. Elan Technology, a manufacturer of ceramic and glass insulators for electronics components, was featured in a Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s “Production in the Innovation Economy” report. Published in September 2013, the study classified Elan Technology as one of several “Main Street Manufacturers” that doubled their revenues and increased their head count between 2004 and 2008 in addition to having more than $5 million in revenues and more than 20 employees. BUILDING AWARENESS FOR CAREERS Companies within Liberty County have access to a 200,000-person workforce in a seven-country labor draw area, as well as the ability to leverage the supplemental labor force of Fort Stewart’s transitioning soldiers and spouses. spouses also strengthen the area’s labor force. Industrial employers also benefit from specialized programs made possible through Georgia Quick Start, which provides customized workforce training free-of-charge to qualifying businesses and through Savannah Technical College. Four manufacturers – SNF Inc., Interstate Resources, Firth Rixson Forgings and Elan Technology – recently established the Liberty County Manufacturing Collaborative, a group that works closely with Savannah Technical College and the Liberty College and Career Academy. The Liberty County Manufacturing Collaborative in partnership with Savannah Technical College and the Liberty College and Career Academy will launch a pilot apprenticeship program in August 2014. In their first year, apprentices will complete Savannah Technical College courses while working 20 hours per week beginning at $10 per hour on three-month
rotations with each of the four manufacturers. “Working at each industry will provide insight into several types of advanced manufacturing operations, materials and processes,” said Chris Bohlmann, Vice President and General Manager at Firth Rixson. “Students will see that these highly skilled positions can transform into lucrative careers at home in innovative, high-tech fields.” Employers and their education partners intend for the program to grow in future years and increase awareness about the opportunities available within the community. “These manufacturers are investing in you,” added Kevin Werntz, Vice President of Economic Development at Savannah Technical College. “They want to give you an opportunity so you can stay here in Liberty County and not only have a job, but have a viable and successful career.”

Celebrating a past Chamber Chairman, Gary Walker, and his valiant ability to handle chairmanship twice, once in the mid-90s and once in the early part of 2000.

What makes a leader? Truly a question for the ages. We are delighted to explore and highlight one of our leaders in the following tribute to a great Chamber Chairman who effectively led the organization not once, but twice, without blinking an eye to the sacrifice he would be making personally and professionally because he is truly committed to the best Liberty County possible. Gary Walker, owner of Walker Insurance for the last 34 years, accepted the mantle of Chamber chairmanship not once, but two times in a span of 17 years. Having served in both 1990 and in 2007, Gary was amazed to have been asked to serve a second term so long after the first but did not hesitate to accept the responsibility because he considered it to be an “honor to serve”. “Without a doubt the Chamber has grown and established a good position in the community,” said Walker. No stranger to the Chamber offices, even today some 6 years after his last term as Chairman, Gary is a staple in the Liberty County business community. For the Chamber a leader has a vision. Leaders see a problem that needs to be fixed or a goal that needs to be achieved, such is the case for this former Chairman. His vision for the Chamber: “As a voluntary organization its purpose is to help business people grow the community, help new business people to become familiar to other business people. It’s really an opportunity for a successful business person to give back to the community that supported them,” said Gary.
Gary’s positive leadership both encouraged and rewarded the people of Liberty County and enhanced the overall image and effectiveness of the Chamber. Kim Ryon A former Chamber Chairman & current CFO for the City of Hinesville

But it’s not enough to just have a vision, or so we believe. A lot of people see things that should be done, things that could be fixed, could be better or where a step forward could be taken. What we feel makes leaders different is that they act and our former Chairman is a man of action. He worked to achieve his vision in his first round as Chairman by starting the first magazine produced by the Chamber. He was also the Chair when Desert Storm started, all of the troops on Fort Stewart were gone in 30 days, leaving Liberty County a “ghost town” and left to its own devices. “The Chamber took part in many different meetings, we chaired several different committees, all to help keep the economy afloat,” said Gary. He also said that the Chamber organized several events supporting the troops and Board, under his leadership, raised money for a 12 hour, non-stop concert to welcome the troops home that was a “huge success.” This passion for an idea and his commitment to the best Liberty County is what led Gary to accept Chairmanship again 16 years later. Despite the obstacles the Chamber was sure to face, he moved forward in his leadership role. “He has integrity. He pursued the best that the Chamber could be because it was the right thing to do and not because it would make people like him or think better of him,” said Kim Ryon, a former Chamber Chairman and current CFO for the City of Hinesville. She further recognized that Gary utilized his skills as a people person that made him understand the unique differences between people and used those individual skills to achieve his overall goals for the organization. In his 2007 term Gary led the Chamber to reinstate the Progress Through People luncheons which had fallen by the wayside, his belief was that the membership wanted that opportunity to network and also to learn about what was happening in their own community. He also worked to reignite the Eggs & Issues Breakfast which highlighted a potentially important legislative issue so that members could again network but also receive valuable information on a potentially hotbed political issue. “Gary’s positive leadership both encouraged and rewarded the people of Liberty County and enhanced the overall image and effectiveness of the Chamber,” Ryon further stated. During his second term Gary admits that the Chamber learned that not all media are honest as the Chamber met and was interviewed by three national television stations and one international magazine about the deployments, and he felt that the tone of the interviews was not what the Chamber was trying to convey. “Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal,” is a quote on leadership by Kevin Kruse, and we certainly feel that Gary Walker, having served the Chamber admirably exemplifies a true leader. Having lived almost a century Mrs. Cassie Tanner is still going strong, enjoying her garden, church, family & friends. article & photography by Leah Poole As the title implies a rose by any other name would definitely not smell as sweet. Cassie Tanner is one of a kind. A unique and soft hearted lady, she is nearing the century mark at the age of 93. Having worked for 44 years in the Hinesville First United Methodist Church as the church secretary, she can remember when Highway 84 was dirt and all the storefronts currently on Main Street were woods. She remembers when the Hinesville Area Arts Council Gallery on Commerce Street was the old Georgian Hotel and when the bank was inside the current site of Zum Rosenhof on Midway Street. “When I started working at the Church it was the pastor, the custodian and me, she chuckles. She further explained that her job duties often changed day by day, just because the three employed had to do everything for a new and burgeoning congregation. While she is still in good health, Cassie did have an MRI only four weeks prior to this interview, so getting ready for this

auspicious occasion took some effort. “Jan has been a blessing, she just helped so much, took me to get my make-up done and fussed all around making things look nice,” she said, talking about her neighbor of 40 plus years, Jeanette (Jan) Replogle . The two enjoy a close relationship, often walking together in the evenings around the quiet neighborhood, reminiscing on times past. Having met and married her husband, Eugene, who has since passed away, in Liberty County, the couple raised their two daughters, Trisha and Deborah in Hinesville. “Home is all I know, I enjoy life here,” said Cassie. She has lived in Liberty County since the early 1940’s after growing up in Lyons, Toombs County. Cassie said that Hinesville/Liberty County was an excellent place to raise children because everyone looked out for each other, making sure kids were safe and responsible. “Frankly Leah, whether it’s a good thing or not, everyone here today and even back in my early years, they always know everyone else and their business,” she said. She said she liked this mainly because you never have to worry about being alone and there are always people around to help and who truly care. Cassie said that she still likes to bake pound cakes because it’s, “nice to do something for everybody,” and she doesn’t like having an empty pantry when people come over to visit, even if that is an antiquated tradition. She said that she still enjoys making the cakes as it’s one of the things she can do without aide and people really seem to enjoy eating them. She also enjoys walking around the neighborhood that she and Eugene built their house in, during the early 1960’s, right off of Highway 84 in the middle of town. The neighborhood, locally called Glenn Bryant, is just beside the Bryant Commons property currently used for local events, concerts and more. Cassie enjoys sitting out on her back porch sometimes and hearing the music across the pond. Several years ago she had a front row seat to the fireworks that took place. “I’ve never seen an ugly rose,” she said, admitting that she loves all kinds of flowers but roses of any shade are her favorite. Even at her age Cassie loves to get out in her yard and garden, pruning the flowers, trimming branches and basically just enjoying being outside. So to Cassie Tanner, yes, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet because she truly appreciates all that nature offers, however, to us there is no other Cassie Tanner, she’s definitely one in a million! Carson Age 3
Meet the children of the Chamber/CVB. Hear the tales of what they want to be when they grow up and how their working mothers influence those decisions.
48
Liberty County Magazine
written by Leah Poole photography by Joanna Ng Photography Released in 2011, Joel Henderson said it best with his chart topping hit, “Growing Up is Hard to do.” Pretty sure the children of our Chamber/CVB staff would agree with that lyric, all having hard working mothers who are constantly on the go with various projects to better the community in which they (along with dads) are raising their children in. Lisa Davis, Chamber Membership Director has three kids, two under the age of five. “I grow up in my mom’s house,” said Carson, age 3. With a keen appreciation for all things dirt, young Carson is convinced that he would like to drive big trucks when he grows up even though it’s “too dangerous for me now.” Keeping a close eye on his favorite yellow dump truck, lest one of the other kids attempt a snatch and grab, Carson talks all about his dogs, Codie and Katie and surpisingly (ok not really) admits his favorite color is yellow. Not to be outdone, Lola, 5, is our superstar! Her aspirations towards superstardom will hopefully allow her to sing and dance professionally, as well as utilize some of her gymnastics skills. She’s been taking classes for a while now and likes it a lot. “Didn’t you already write that down, can’t you remember what you wrote?” she questions imperiously. Having forgotten that Frozen was not only her favorite movie but also contained her favorite song, I did in fact write the movie title down twice, oopsy. Madame Superstar loves to color in her Hello Kitty coloring book and says that her

favorite meal is a hamburger and fries from McDonalds. Rounding out this trio is Landon. At age 14, he aspires to do many things. He would love to attend West Point and is working towards that goal by maintaining his grades and participating in various extracurricular activities. His eventual goal would be to serve as a combat engineer, entering the Army as an officer after college. Currently he plays defense and goalie on a local soccer league, as well as the saxophone in the Liberty County High School Marching Band. A trifle accident prone, Landon has broken his fingers, toes, elbow and knuckles numerous times throughout his stint in these activities. In his spare time he likes to play video games and hang out with friends. Amanda Scott, the CVB Program Manager, has been with the organization a little over two years. Moving her way from administrative assistant to program manager, showing a high level of commitment to the community and working to create a family friendly environment in which to raise her two little ones. Matthew, 18 months, unfortunately could not be interviewed (and he didn’t cooperate real well in the photo taking either) but if he could talk (and he does sing really well!) he’d tell you he’s very interested in sports, balls of any kind are uber fascinating right now, so he may be our future NFL player! Genevieve on the other hand, at age 4, has plenty to say and all should bow low to our future Princess! “I want to be Ariel and live

under the sea……but I’m not sure if there’s sharks under there!” she said. By the way the Princess is convinced that her brother, Matthew, would be a lion. “He roars a lot,” she said. When asked if she helps in the diaper changing duty she very adamantly shakes her head and said, “Nope, that smells yucky!” A student at the Liberty County PreK Center, she likes art class the best (I mean who doesn’t?) and said that one day she will be Miss America with a talent of playing the piano (to which mom raises an eyebrow because she hasn’t taken a single lesson yet). At home Genevieve said she likes to play Rabbit Hop Away with her mom and read books, but she especially loves when they have Princess Parties. Last, but certainly not least, Leah Poole, CEO of the Chamber/CVB has an 8 year old, Gabriel, who wants to find his future in art or baseball (yeah sound similar right?). He decides for the purposes of the interview that art is the desired career path. “I like drawing things and then giving them to people, it makes them smile,” he said. No stranger to the Chamber/CVB office, it is not unusual to walk in any office in the building and see some of Gabe’s “work” dotting the landscape of business. He is a 3rd grade student at Taylor’s Creek Elementary where he is also in the Gifted Program. When not in school and drawing, Gabe loves to play baseball and soccer. Having participated in several baseball camps this past summer he was rated #2 in his age division for pitching at a specialized baseball camp. When at home, whether with his mom or dad, he loves to play outside, ride his bike and play with his animals. To all the little ones out there (be they 3 or 14) we parents say, “It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are,” E.E. Cummings LCM

“You know my husband and my family will pay good money for these pictures right?” jokes Shayla Jones, our 2014-15 magazine cover model. No friend of nature, Shayla admitted that she prefers to view nature from behind the window glass of her house or in photographs, and she wasn’t really sure how she got talked into wading boots and a Liberty County swamp. However, she also admitted that while she’d driven the route we took to get to the site many times, she’d never really stopped to appreciate the haunting beauty represented by a cypress swamp. Fortunately for Shayla, we have! Liberty County is a nature lover’s paradise, full of opportunities to bird watch, enjoy wildlife, kayak, canoe, hunt, fish, shrimp, hike and more. Although she considers herself a local grown, country girl, her dad served 20 years in the United States Air Force, which means she spent a good portion of her childhood traveling. She was born in Italy and spent her early years in Clovis, New Mexico at Cannon Air Force Base. Her dad retired from the service when she was 8, and they have lived in Liberty County ever since. Both her paternal and

maternal families are from Liberty County originally. “Most people know my dad’s parents best, Randolph and Geneva Jones Sr.,of Riceboro. My maternal grandparents are the late William Bacon and Bernice Bacon of Midway” said Shayla. After high school she enrolled at Georgia State University as a dual degree major for Business Administration and Fine Arts with an Interior Design Concentration. Why the different degrees? “Because Mom said, ‘get a business degree young lady,” laughs Shayla. Taking classes for both majors throughout her college career, she finally decided at the end of her fifth fall semester to just go ahead and officially graduate with one degree, her Bachelors in Business Management with a minor in entrepreneurship. For fine arts she was only a few credits shy of receiving her designation. Six days after graduation she got engaged to Dominick Parker, moved home a month later and started working for State Farm and her mother immediately. With a similar childhood story, Dominick grew up in Germany before moving to Liberty County around the age of 8. With childhood stories so similar Shayla feels like they were, “Certainly meant to be!” Shayla said that working with her mom is, “the best job ever,” all while laughing and admitting that they do get along very well as long as her mom remembers, “I’m the boss, or at least she lets me think that.” After five years they must have found some combination that works as Shayla now serves as the office manager for State Farm. A very creative person, however, Shayla hated to leave behind her arts background so she always makes reference to the dual major as she put in years of coursework towards it and completed a two-year internship under an interior designer while enrolled. Not one to leave her creativity behind Shayla and her sister, Tajana, have come together to sell arts and crafts, as well as other little things such as clothing, shoes, the occasional handbag, etc. at Plunderful in Midway. “My contribution to our booth has been mainly repurposed furniture and reupholstered furniture pieces. We have had the booth for several months (I believe we opened it in April of this year). We call our booth ‘Keeping up with the Joneses’. We thought that it was a fun name that people would have a laugh at” said Shayla. She also said that they had tons of fun brainstorming and coming up with creative little projects on the weekend and using the time for sister bonding. Shayla also serves as the secretary for the Hinesville Area Arts Council, dedicating time and energy towards promoting the arts in Liberty County. During her time at Georgia State she was able to volunteer with CIFAL, an ambassador networking organization and
was fortunate enough to help organize the Woman’s World Networking Event that was held at Agnes Scott College. During the event they flew women in from many countries from around the world including Argentina, the United States, Colombia, Mexico, Jamaica and a host of others to come together and share best practices about government, education and social issues. “During the 3 day event I got to work personally with the Prime Minister of Jamaica, Portia Simpson. It is one of the most memorable times I have ever had and one that I will never forget. She was such a joy to work with! We posed for a picture together with our heads touching, and I framed it in my office” said Shayla. In her spare time Shayla said that she prefers to stay home with her husband and her dog. The dog is a Bichon Frise named Raspberry who is the “light of my world,” she admits. Shayla also works to manage her parent’s property and some vacation rentals in Savannah that they have so there is very little free time open. We were so happy to introduce Shayla to a little bit of Liberty County nature and take her out of her comfort zone and into a place that she is sure to remember for years to come! Discovering Liberty County’s Tea History & the Heritage That Remains Part of the Evolving Culture 66
Liberty County Magazine
written by Amanda Scott photography by Joanna Ng Photography
Take a journey into the past and experience the beginning of many of our landmarks that we are privileged to call ours.
We recently held a tea party of sorts at the Liberty County Chamber and Convention and Visitors Bureau offices. It wasn’t formal and we didn’t use good china or cloth napkins. We did get to taste eight different teas to narrow the selection for a Liberty County tea blend. Of course, none of us are expert tea-tasters but we are from the south and that gives us credit right there. There were black teas, fruity teas and nutty teas and in the end, we narrowed it down to three. There will be another round of tea tasting soon to select the final blend to reflect Liberty County and the rich history of would-be tea plantations. Many a southerner grew up on sweet iced tea and its ability to quench thirst and the soul simultaneously. The best kind of tea as any local can tell you is a strong blend with just the right amount of sugar served over ice. No nonsense and no fuss, no muss. Tea that refreshes the body and mind. Yep, we’re passionate about tea in the south. What better way to wile away the sticky, steaming, languid summers than a tall frosty glass of iced tea? Here in Liberty County, the soil is perfect for tea and if it hadn’t been for a financial deal that fell through to South Carolina, Liberty County would have been producing tea for the states in the 1800s. It all goes back to Riceboro and the first tea plants introduced there by William Jones and his daughter, Rosa Jones Screven. A Scottish venture capitalist Liberty County Magazine

named John Jackson visited Liberty County to inspect the tea crop. The specimens he sent to the Department of Agriculture were deemed equal the best raised in India or China. A $30,000 appropriation to establish a government sponsored tea project in Liberty County was secured but the political tides turned and the project went to South Carolina. Jackson had no choice but to follow the money and go to Summerville, South Carolina to tend to the crops. After a year of cultivation, he was convinced South Carolina’s soil was wrong and Liberty County was the best choice to grow a perfect tea crop. Unfortunately, since the tea didn’t take in South Carolina, the government funding was relinquished and Jackson had to abandon his tea aspirations. He did move back to Liberty County and became a resident until his death. He tried to secure financial backing for tea cultivation in the area but was unsuccessful. Remains of the old tea fields near Riceboro could still be found as late as 1900. Local residents picked the leaves when they were tender, dried them in the sun and brewed their own special blend of Liberty County tea. The history of Liberty County dates back long before tea plants were sowed in the dark, rich soil. Historical and cultural sites abound in this area and tell the story of a blended heritage forged from the enslaved Gullah Geechee people to Revolutionary War heroes to Civil Rights leaders and into the modern era. History is dotted throughout Liberty County along the highways, main streets and dirt roads. Not too long ago, we Liberty County Magazine

took an excursion through our lovely Liberty County and we stopped to visit with a few of our many historic and cultural sites. The destinations along the way are only a few examples of the history mosaic that makes up Liberty County. Dorchester Academy, a notable site on the National Register of Historic Places was founded after the Civil War to teach African American youth. It also served as a haven for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as he prepared for the 1963 march on Birmingham. Indeed, it seems only appropriate that Dr. King should find respite in a land named Liberty. The room where he stayed is preserved and stands as a meaningful moment in time. Past the school lie the wonders of Cay Creek Wetlands Interpretive Center. It is abundant with plant life and rich soil, the type that John Jackson believed was perfect for cultivating exceptional tea plants. Six different ecosystems are represented here and in addition to the diverse flora and fauna, history makes its mark as well. If you look closely, you’ll find earthen berms that are the remains of dikes once used to hold water onto flooded fields used for growing rice. Moving further through the county will bring you to the Midway Museum, Georgia’s only Colonial Museum. 70

Liberty County has pristine coastal views in several locations, including Sunbury, a once bustling pre-Revolutionary War town with a port that rivaled Savannah.
Treasures and artifacts are placed throughout the colonial style plantation cottage and interpreters relay the stories of the prominent members of Liberty County who made historic contributions locally and nationally. Built in 1756, burned during the Revolutionary War and rebuilt in 1792, the Midway Church sits on the museum property and watches over the cemetery across the street where Revolutionary War Generals James Screven and James Stewart are laid to rest. In Riceboro, you’ll find the Geechee Kunda Cultural Center. An interpretive center dedicated to preserving the Gullah Geechee heritage and educating visitors. The museum holds original relics from the days of slavery and tools used to harvest crops. They have turned what was once a rice plantation where their people were enslaved into a celebration of heritage and education. Annual events like the Sugar Cane Grinding and The Gathering exhibit the art, history and stories of this nation of people. The motto of Seabrook Village is “Makin Do” and it is yet another stop on the historic journey. The authentic site provides demonstrations of how some of the first freed slaves in Liberty County used their ingenuity and talents to create a small village that exemplified hope and liberty. Visitors today can participate in demonstrations from the old way of life and immerse themselves in the folklore and legacy of a time Liberty County has pristine coastal views in several locations, including Sunbury, a once bustling pre-Revolutionary War town with a port that rivaled Savannah. The town was protected by Fort Morris, where the original earthworks of the fort remain. Sunbury and Fort Morris were conquered by the British and today, Sunbury sleeps. There are homes clustered near the marvelous water views and the peaceful Sunbury Cemetery where some of the town’s founders are interned. It’s a tranquil place to sit on the dock and soak in the view. Our journey concluded in Sunbury. The intriguing history of tea in Liberty County and the sites mentioned are just a fragment of the discoveries to be made here. We’re bringing tea back to Liberty County to carry on the hopes of John Jackson. We’re searching to find a tea that’s just right to celebrate the history of the area and the devotion southerners have to their house wine. Though the tea plants cultivated by Jackson are no longer in existence in Liberty County but the soil in these parts holds the memory of his dream. The blended culture and history of our lovely Liberty County awaits discovery. In the near future, if you visit us in Liberty County, chances are we’ll offer you our own blend of tea, specially selected to capture the flavor of local culture. The tea blend chosen by our local residents will be something you can take home with you, as a palatable souvenir of your trip. We hope you will take the history of this great county with you as well. To learn more about Liberty County’s culture, history and attractions or to plan your next trip to our coastal hideaway, visit www. libertycounty.org or call 912-368-3580. There is so much to do and see in Liberty County. Let us take you there. LCM

Where: 8787 East Oglethorpe Highway, Midway When: The Academy is open year-round. Contact: 912-884-2347 Admission: No fee; donations are welcome The former school, which was founded by the American Missionary Society soon after the Civil War to educate African-Americans, was named one of America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Sites by the National Trust for Historic Preservation a few years ago. The Academy operated until 1940 and then became a cooperative to help area residents with farming, economic and household issues. Its most recent historical role was as a site for civil rights movements. The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. planned his campaign to integrate Birmingham during meetings there is the mid1960s. The Dorchester Improvement Association is spearheading the effort to restore Dorchester Academy to its past glory and conducts annual fundraisers, the biggest of which is the annual Walk to Dorchester, usually held in mid-June. The walk retraces the average distance students had to walk to attend the school.

Over the years the building fell into a state of disrepair and was closed due to the hazardous conditions. While none of the plantation’s buildings remain, the site in Bulltown Swamp is a natural wonder with interpretive signs marking trails and the restored formal garden. In July 2010, portions of LcConte were closed due to a lack of funds, and the site’s hours of operation now are by appointment only. Those who set up tours still can meander down the nature trail along the ridge of one of the many dams built by slave labor in the 1770’s. With the Spaniards came African slaves, making this the entry port for some of the first slaves in America. The English occupied the area in the 1730s, creating several plantations including Melon Bluff. Remnants of this culture are still present in Melon Bluff’s abandoned rice fields and old ferry road. Along with a forest of native plants, Melon Bluff is home to 309 species of birds, including wild turkeys, owls, woodpeckers, marsh birds, pelicans, painted buntings, hummingbirds, osprey and cardinals. The museum was built in 1957 and has been gathering artifacts, documents, pictures and furnishings since then. Several special days are held at the museum each year, including the annual Christmas tea. In late 2009, a new collection opened featuring documents and household items from the Charles Colcock Jones family, whose letters became the basis for ‘The Children of Pride,” a compilation about life on Southern plantations in the mid1800s. Next door to the museum is the Midway Congregational Church, built in 1792. The church is a classic example of a colonial house of worship with neither electricity nor plumbing. The nearby cemetery was established in the 1700s by Puritan settlers. Many famous Liberty Countians are buried there. About 300 of the 1,200 graves still bear their original markers, while others crumbled or were destroyed by Northern troops who used the cemetery as a cattle pen during the Civil War.
