Commercial Complex, Practice Project

The client commissioned us to design an English architectural style commercial complex town, with the primary goal of attracting tourists and local residents for shopping, entertainment, and leisure activities. We have been responsible from the initial research phase to the development of preliminary construction drawings, and the subsequent implementation has been entrusted to a third-party construction company.

The design work is carried out across various areas and stages. For instance, while the first area is currently under construction, the second area is in the design stage. This is the project I mainly follow up, and my involvement with each building varies in depth.

The main functions of the complex include shops, apartments, and offices. The area and building has been designed based on axes, styles, specific requirements and needs.

PROPOSED MASTERPLAN

The site is triangular, the axis is divided according to the characteristics of the terrain, and three squares of different sizes are set as entrances.

01PRACTICE 1

DISTRICT PLANNING OF DIFFERENT ARCHITECTURAL STYLES

Based on the client's request and thorough research on the evolution of British architectural styles, we proceeded to divide the entire site into specific areas that corresponded to the functional requirements.

To ensure a smooth collaboration, we prioritized the identification of localization methods for each architectural style before delving into the detailed design of each building's facade. This involved establishing standard facades and blocks to maintain a unified architectural style within each district.

Furthermore, we carefully planned the distribution and allocated suitable areas for each building, considering various specifications and indicators. With these initial considerations in place, we then progressed to the subsequent stage, which involved the specific design and tectonic drawing of each building.

The two buildings are selected in the site to show the working process.

The design process for all the buildings on the site has progressed to the stage of preliminary construction drawings. In addition, a facade control standard manual has been developed to provide guidance for the construction team's work.

Ancient Town Re-new, Practice Project

T he museum's design is part of a larger project to rebuild and preserve the entire ancient town. Therefore, in the early stage of the project, it is necessary to conduct a lot of research and investigation on the history of the ancient town and the existing ancient buildings and walls.

The exterior of the building uses the existing elements of the town, such as the layered ancient walls of the town, the local grey brick. At the same time, the space design also inherits the pattern of the town for a thousand years. Using modern methods, creating a museum that blends in with its surroundings was key to the project.

At the time of receiving the project, the building already had a version designed by another firm. We formed the scheme by adding our own understanding, redesigning the space and architectural language.

PRELIMINARY RESEARCH

An ancient map of the town 540 years ago, the ancient wall continues from an earlier period to the present day.

Thesis Question:

How can the architect take the city as a narrated entirety and from the continuation of culture perspective to make the city grow from the past to the future.

The project explores the relationship between people and urban public spaces from the perspective of buskers(street entertainer), providing new solutions for urban renewal and the continuation of intangible cultural heritage, while supporting the temporary accommodation needs of specific populations.

At Part1, the history, controversies, and the spatial relationships between space and buskers of the street culture are worth exploring. And get to know the city of Preston by investigating specific buildings, such as the famous Praston Bus Station. The whole study will be presented in an artistic form to inspire and guide the later design.

PROJECT FILE

The project is divided into three parts. I have integrated the research in the first part, the urban space research in the second part and the architectural design in the third part into a narrative structure. The archive contains a book and a drawing to illustrate the nested evolution of the entire project. Narrative structure, use virtual characters to carry research content and design.

Based on the demands of artists' behavior space and social space, we can objectively clarify the relationship between buskers and cities: unsteady art practitioners who temporarily integrate into urban space and social system. Urban managers' pursuit of a stable state of urban space is contrary to the behavioral space demands and occupational characteristics of street performers. This essential conflict has led to its deliberate neglect in many discussions of urban public space. It also reflects the blindness of social managers to these marginalised people in the city.

Thesis Question:

How can the architect take the city as a narrated entirety and from the continuation of culture perspective to make the city grow from the past to the future.

The Part2 takes the city as the scale, inspired by the Invisible City and Aldo Rossi's theory of city memory, designs an urban journey, and provides support for the urban space by the way of landscape facility space experiment. The choice of the site and the design of the facility form correspond to specific metaphors, which combine the findings of the first part research.

For example, the concept of a whole city tour is a continuation of Preston's urban carnival, Preston Guild. In addition, the design of the venue facilities is also based on the historical events of the city and the space needs of street performers.

Thesis Question:

How can the architect take the city as a narrated entirety and from the continuation of culture perspective to make the city grow from the past to the future.

The Part3 selects a specific site from the entire urban journey and designs a service living space for the specific group of people, named Hustle and Bustle Hotel. The service hotel is located in front of the bus station where the tour starts, the space throughout the building forms a small journey that guides the crowd coming from the bus station from the ground floor through the hotel and into the city center.

To harmonize with the surrounding architecture and evoke a timeless ambiance, the project incorporates classic elements from British architectural history, such as red brick, steel frames, and arches. By integrating these elements, the design seeks to complement neighboring structures and evoke a sense of continuity with the past.

Natural Ventilation / Natural Daylight / Shading

Benefit from the building's atrium, each side of the building maximizes north-south natural ventilation. The overhead of the southern floor of the building is conducive to the cold air entering the central space, accelerating air convection. The space of the building's atrium facilitates natural light on the north and south sides of the building, thus reducing the building's energy consumption. The sun shading of the steel frame external corridor not only ensures the disadvantages of direct sunlight, but also provides outdoor space for basking in the sun.

Each of the habitable spaces within the building has access to large openable windows for ventilation. Benefit from the building's atrium, each side of the building maximizes north-south natural ventilation. The overhead of the southern floor of the building is conducive to the cold air entering the central space, accelerating air convection.

Thus, CLT reacts like a variable vapour barrier. During the heating season, when the relative humidity inside the building decreases, CLT loses its ability to transport moisture and becomes more diffusion-resistant. On the other hand, during the summer, when the level of humidity inside the building increases again, CLT becomes more open to diffusion. This natural property of wood is an advantage in the construction industry as it enables structures to be designed and built which remain sustainably operational and take into account the building physics construction principle of permeability needing to increase from inside to outside.

Thus, CLT also helps to regulate the ambient air. When there is higher ambient humidity, CLT absorbs the moisture and releases it again when the level of humidity decreases.

Residential Project, MArch 1

T he project is a modular housing system under the intervention strategy. A solution to area crime problem and homeless housing needs next to the Fallowfield Loop in Manchester, providing basic services and housing security for specific types of people throughout the circular route.

Given the primary condition of low cost for this project, it is crucial to develop a construction method that is both simple and convenient. With the structural approach determined, two sets of modules have been designed: one for the facilities serving different groups of people on the Loop, and another for the various room types and functional spaces within the house. The project can benefit from standardized construction elements, reducing complexity and minimizing expenses. These modules will accommodate the diverse needs of different user groups on the Loop, as well as the various room layouts and functional requirements within the house.

Renovation Project, MArch 1

This is an adaptive reuse project focused on restoring The Gorton House, a building with a rich history spanning over 200 years, and transforming it with a renewed purpose, function, and presence.

Ruins art is a profound form of art that holds the essence of time within it. The Gorton House has witnessed significant historical periods like the Industrial Revolution and World War II, and its dilapidated interior stands as a testament to the passage of time.

Drawing inspiration from the works of Anselm Kiefer, the project involves meticulous restoration of the original building structure and arranging the interior as an exhibition hall in the style of ruins art. Additionally, new spaces have been added to the west and north sides of the house. Capitalizing on the scenic view of the northern reservoir, the entire site has been planned around an axis. The project gives new life to the old gorton house and continues the vicissitudes of its time.

The Underutilized

Self Inspiration Project Village Revitalization

The project is a village revitalization project with Chinese characteristics, an entire village of residents works around Taobao, China's largest e-commerce group Therefore, this village is also called Taobao Village. There are many such villages in China, so the space utilization system designed by this project can be applied to many spaces like this village.

Because the entire village has an industrial chain of textile and small commodity production, including express distribution and other processes, the old houses make the production line chaotic and transportation difficult. The project has developed a mobile app to guide people in every line of work to track goods more easily. At the same time, an entertainment place is constructed above the building, and corridors and pipelines are constructed between the buildings to facilitate the movement of people and the transportation of goods. The building on the ground floor expands the space for easy transportation.

MOBILE APP USER INTERFACE

People in different jobs can track goods and choose how they use the corridor according to their own personalized choices.

By showing the space use process of people of different types of work, we can see that the corridor and application greatly increase the convenience of villagers' work. Some service facilities are also installed in the corridor in a modular form to increase the happiness of villagers' lives.

Self Inspiration Project

Vegetable Market Renovation

The market is located in a crowded old district of Shanghai. The dilapidated infrastructure makes the space of the vegetable market chaotic and crowded, and there are certain security risks. The neighborhood has little public space, according to background checks, and its narrow streets are lined with scooters and bicycles. The aim of the project was to provide sports space for the surrounding residents by renovating the vegetable market space and introducing a running track and sports space. Different groups of residents come here at different times, which also creates the conditions for flexibility in the use of space.

The space of the original vegetable farm is enclosed by the surrounding houses, and the roof with a steel frame is used and has fallen into disrepair. The project removed the steel ceiling and used the existing columns to increase the maintenance structure, create new space and improve the efficiency of space use. It also creates a public activity area for the neighborhood
