You will reach Aegina, the biggest island of the Argosaronic Gulf, by boat in about 1 hour and 15 seconds from Piraeus. The first thing you will see while you are still on the boat is Aegina’s city and the port.

The island was an important commercial port of the ancient

world but also a temporary seat of government (18281829) of the newly established Greek state. Its great history has been reflected in the majestic monuments of classical antiquity, in its Byzantine chapels but also in the elegant neoclassical buildings of the 19th century. Aegina is also internationally famous for its pistachio and ceramics.

The rare natural beauties and idyllic landscapes of Aegina have inspired great Greek artists throughout the ages who chose to live in this beautiful island. According to mythology it was named Aegina from the daughter of the God Asopus, Aegina, whom Zeus fell in love with and abducted to the island of Oinoni, which was renamed Aegina. It is the island where Nikos Kazantzakis spent 20 whole years and wrote some of his most important works.

CITY OF AEGINA

Arriving at the port you will see Aegina city, which was the capital of Greece from 1828 to 1829. Saint Nicolas church is standing among the traditional houses and alleys beautifully. You will find many shops, restaurants, cafes, gelato, souvenirs and local products while walking on its narrow streets! It is one of the most crowded places on the island all year long.

The mechanism of the clock, after being repaired and modified, is now installed on the ground floor of the building in a glass case.

ANCIENT TEMPLE OF POSEIDON

It is one of the most beautiful tiny islands of our country and is located just a few miles away from Athens! A small paradise with incredible natural beauty and history! Poros is an island in the Saronic Gulf which is located a short distance from the coast of the Peloponnese and opposite the village of Galatas in Trizinia. The Ancient Temple of Poseidon is located on the north side of the island, in Palatia are which is between Vigla and Profitis Ilias. It is estimated that it was built in 520 BC. and is Doric in style with 6 columns in width and 12 in length and with 2 entrances. In fact, it is one of the three great sanctuaries of Poseidon around the Saronic Gulf.

The Clock which is a symbol of the island, is easily accessible from the port. It stands among prickly pears and pines at the highest

The Temple formed an isosceles triangle with Aphaia Aegina and Poseidon of Sounio. Few ruins remain today of the Doric temple (6th century) which is made of blue limestone. However, it continues to be one of the most important monuments of antiquity in Ancient Kalavria, in perhaps the most beautiful part of the island.

ΝΆΥΣΤΆΘΜΟΣ RUSSIAN NAVAL STATION

To the west of the port of Poros, 5 kilometers north, in a beautiful bay, the ruins of the amphitheatrically built Russian Naval Station are preserved. After the end of the Russo-Turkish war, the Russians chose this port to create a station for the Russian fleet. So in 1834 they built there a complex of buildings used for the manufacture of galeta and for the storage of materials, food and coal that served to supply the Russian fleet. The Russians maintained the property until 1900. At the beginning of the 20th century, the then Greek ambassador to Russia Alexandros Tombazis - a native of Poriotsuggested to the Tsar the transfer of ownership of the area to the Greek State for the good of the Greek Navy. The Tsar agreed and so the Russian Naval Base came under the jurisdiction of the Naval Service that was then based in Poros. Since 1989 it has been designated as a historically preserved monument, due to its great architectural and historical interest.

SALAMINA | ΣΑΛΑΜΙΝΑ

A BEAUTIFUL DESTINATION WITH DISTINCT IDENTITY!

Salamina, also known as Koulouri in antiquity, is the largest island in the Saronic Gulf and the closest one to the coasts of Attika. It is located in the northwest part of the Saronic Gulf and the its capital is the homonymous city of Salamina. Salamina is the homeland of Homer’s King Aiada of Telamonios and the tragic poet Euripides. It is also internationally known for the historic Battleship that happened in 480 BC between the Greeks and the Persian Empire, the result of which was the victory of the Greeks and the final end to the Persian plans to spread to Europe. The great Greek modern poet Angelos Sikelianos stayed in a small house from 1933 to 1950 in Saladmina, opposite the Monastery of Faneromeni. The legendary fighter of the Greek Revolution, Georgios Karaiskakis, had his headquarters at the beach of Salamis, his protector was Saint Demetrius, and so his last wish was to be buried on the island. On the northeastern coast of the island there are the facilities of the Salamis Naval Base.

Salamina attracts a lot of tourists during summer, both for long-term holidays and for one-day excursions, as it is a stone’s throw away from Piraeus and is a very economic destination.

MONASTERY OF FANEROMENI

The Monastery of Faneromeni in Salamina is a historic monastery located on the northwest coast of Salamina island, where a very old and almost abandoned Christian temple used to be. In that temple a picture of the Virgin Mary was found by Lambros Kannelos, who built a monastery and lived in it, and he was eventually sanctified by the Greek Orthodox Church, given the name of Saint Lavrentios. According to the ecclesiastical tradition, he saw three times in his sleep Virgin Mary who ordered him to go to Salamina, to the ruins of the temple, throwing his overcoat into the sea to pass across. He went to the location and, with the help of the inhabitants, he dug up and found the icon of Panagia Faneromeni. The Holy Monastery of Phaneromeni in Salamina is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and it celebrates on August 23rd.

A paradise emerging from the azure waters of the Argosaronic Gulf. A breath away from reality into a world that combines tradition with luxury and finesse. We are, of course, referring to the beautiful island of Spetses, named “Isole di Spezzie” by the Venetians, meaning the Island of Fragrances. This lush green island halts time and sweeps us away into a dreamlike world filled with grandeur and authenticity.

Welcome to the world of Spetses, where diverse cultures, the richness of nature, and a love for art blend with a laid-back atmosphere and an infinite sense of freedom.

The first image that greets you upon arrival on the island is the historic harbor and capital of the island, Dapia. You will instantly fall in love with its imposing neoclassical buildings, pebble-stoned alleys, and colorful flowers. Dapia was the gathering place for nobles and captains during the Greek War of Independence in 1821. The picturesque harbor with its old arsenal and historic monuments impresses every visitor. On the right side of the harbor, you will encounter the statue of Bouboulina and the majestic captain’s mansions along the beach. As you head towards the left end of the island, you will see traditional carriages and the Old Harbor, reminiscent of Spetses’ maritime heritage.

- ARMATA

A truly spectacular event with a touch of Revolution takes place every September, on the second Saturday of the month, on the historic island of Spetses and culminates with the impressive reenactment of the burning of a replica of the Turkish flagship. It is a cultural event that impresses spectators of all ages every year.

But what’s its significance for the history of Greece?

On September 8, 1822, Ypsilantis from the land and Bouboulina from the sea besieged one of the last resistance points of the Turks, Palamidi in Nafplio. To reinforce their resistance, the Turks sent part of their fleet to destroy Hydra and Spetses as a diversion. They hoped that the threat to the islands would force the Greek forces to divide. However, the Greeks did not move their forces from Palamidi, and the confrontation with the Turks was carried out by men from the two islands. In preparation for their resistance, the Greeks evacuated the residents of Spetses to Hydra, and only 60 brave men with captains Tsourpas, Lambrou, Kriezi, and Koutsis remained on the island to face the Turkish fleet.

After a long naval battle in the waters of Spetses, with the Turks having a clear numerical advantage, the Greeks, led by the Spetsiot fire ship captain Kosmas Barbatsis, managed to reach the Turkish flagship and set it on fire. With the courageous action of the Greeks and the destruction of their flagship, the Turks were forced to retreat. The people of Spetses, considering that they had the help of Panagia (the Virgin Mary) in their victory against the outnumbered Turks, gave the name “Panagia Armata” to the chapel located in the harbor, and they celebrate it every year on September 8th.

Every corner of Spetses has a story to tell. Some of the island’s must-see attractions include:

The historical square of Dapia in the harbor, an old artillery site and gathering place for captains and leaders of the 1821 revolution. Today, it is the hot spot of the island, where you can’t resist having at least one coffee while enjoying the view of the cannons used by the Spetses fighters during the 1821 war.

The house of Hatzigiannis Mexis, the first governor and benefactor of Spetses, which now houses the Museum of Spetses. Since 1939, it has served as an archaeological, historical, and folklore collection, featuring treasures from the Revolution, letters from Kolokotronis and Athanasios Diakos, and the bones of Bouboulina.

The Bouboulina Mansion, with its unique carved ceiling in the grand hall, renovated and functioning as a museum since 1992. Visitors can take a guided tour to learn about the life and work of Bouboulina while viewing artifacts from the Greek Revolution, personal items of the heroine, and other remarkable exhibits.

The two-story neoclassical stone house of the benefactor of Spetses, Sotirios Anargyros. This magnificent architectural gem for the island features a neoclassical rhythm and two Egyptian sphinxes dominating the entrance. It stands out for its quality of composition and construction. Today, it houses the Cultural Center of Spetses.

The Poseidonion Hotel, the vision of philanthropist Sotirios Anargyros, who made significant contributions to the development of Spetses. Located in Bouboulina Square, the Poseidonion Grand Hotel opened its doors for the first time in the summer of 1914, adding cosmopolitan splendor to the island.

The Anargyreios - Korgialeneios School, founded in 1927. Its exceptional facilities cover an area of 130 acres, including a private olive grove and an additional 9,000 acres of private forest. It consists of five main buildings, with four serving as dormitories, while the central building, with an area of 5,500 square meters, includes auditoriums, conference and teaching rooms, a press room, workshops, a restaurant, and more. It also features an outdoor theater, following the ancient theater model, for cultural events, a beach with water sports, and a variety of sports facilities.

The Church of the Holy Trinity, built in 1793 at the highest point of the town, with its magnificent carved wooden iconostasis depicting the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

The chapel of Panagia Armata, built after the victory of the Spetses, Hydra, and Psara forces against the Turks on September 8, 1822.

The Bekiri Cave, an old refuge for the fighters, located in Agii Anargyri, at the back of the island, where the old Spetses residents used to hide women and children during the period of Turkish rule.

The small cove of Zogeria offers a beautiful sandy beach, mildly organized, with calm, turquoise waters. Some of the best beaches on the island can be found in the large bay of Zogeria.

Vrellou Beach is organized, with amazing turquoise waters and white pebbles.

Xylokeriza, a large pebble beach southeast of the settlement, is organized with pebbles and rocky seabed.

Shortly after Xylokeriza, if you turn left onto the dirt road towards the area of Xylokeriza, you will end up in a beautiful pine-covered cove with villas and the lovely small beach of Eleni.

Organized Scholes Beach, right across from the entrance of the School, with the symbol of a Kaiki. The seabed is rocky, and access to the sea is easier from the left side of the beach.

Below the old Xenia of Spetses in Scholes, we will find a very small peaceful pebble beach (it also has a mole for boat access), while the seabed is rocky.

At the bay, from above, you will see on the left the beautiful beach of Tsakona. From the peripheral road, a path starts that leads to this remote pebble beach with a rocky seabed after a five-minute walk.

As the ship moors to the picturesque port of Hydra the landscape that appears in front of you is undeniably ... enchanting. A picturesque cove with a story to be told around every corner.

Welcome to the island that gave birth to dozens of artists.

Welcome to Hydra!

Painters, poets, visual artists and sculptors are some of the artists who put their little stone in order to give this island an artistic atmosphere. You can feel it in the air, you can sense it everywhere. Hydra is not like the other islands. Hydra is a “lady”. Serious but also shy, she does not show you her beauties at once.

Narrow cobbled streets, mansions, picturesque paths and… smiles! Smiles everywhere! At first glance, one would say that it resembles a landscape taken from a fairy tale.

ΛΙΜΆΝΙ - THE PORT

This is where the pulse of the island beats. An island that was featured on glorious pages in history and was a cinematic setting for cinema movies with famous movie stars. A stone’s throw away from Piraeus and only a few minutes from the coast of Argolida, Hydra is an ideal destination for those who seek peace and appreciate a place that holds to its “prohibitions”, which is why it remains unique, without the use of cars, motorbikes or even bicycles…

Hydra, “dressed” in stone and shades of terracotta, wild but so peaceful, is one of those places you will love!

The mansions - a trademark of the economic strength of the island at the end of the 19th century - dominate and will willingly teach you the peculiarities of an architecture that due to its proximity to the land combines island and mainland elements.

You can’t help but fall in love with it from the very first moment. As soon as you set foot on the island and begin to discover its beauties, Mikra Agglia will become the starting point for your vacation. It’s where you’ll begin and end your day. In a place which instantly soothes your soul, with earthy tones prevailing and nature elements playing a leading role, owners Iphigenia Bakratsa and Giannis Rappas have created a true work of art. Without exaggeration and fanfare, affirming the principle of “less is more,” Mikra Agglia offers a breath of tranquility and aesthetics that we all need in our lives.

“Mikra Agglia is not just another restaurant. In our store, we welcome the world and invite it to experience a way of life. Our way of life,” says Mrs. Bakratsa. She knows what she wants, stands firmly on her feet, is fearless, and has nothing to prove.

Mikra Agglia opens its doors early in the morning for coffee and brunch, and later for Greek cuisinebased meals. Chef Vasilios Lekkos, in charge of the menu, and the Sereal Eaters consulting team, along with Mrs. Bakratsa and Mr. Rappas, have succeeded in serving dishes they can be proud of. Dishes that pay homage to Greek gastronomy, in a comfortable space with carefully selected ingredients from all over Greece on our plate. Dishes that evoke memories and have been created through those very memories. For example, “Kolokythoanthi” (courgette flower) recipe from Metaxia, Mrs. Bakratsa’s grandmother. Or the octopus dish she used to make without oil, using vinegar and wine, which will leave you speechless. And pastitsio, which you will enjoy deconstructed, with beef cheeks instead of minced meat.

However, Mikra Agglia is much more than a restaurant and bar. It is a lifestyle store. A concept store where you will find unique decorative objects, ceramics, clothes, shoes, hats, and jewelry. Each item has been carefully chosen for its character and uniqueness and harmonizes perfectly with the island’s aura. It exudes class and sophistication without being flashy.

Among these are straw bags - let’s not forget that in Hydra, they once had no regular bags or sacks and used baskets to carry their belongings, handmade baskets from Tinos, uniquely painted ceramics from Sifnos and Volos, stunning jewelry from the Elichryso Cooperative in Lefkada, where a group of five young people create unique jewelry using the embroidery and weavings of their grandmothers, wooden decorative items and serving utensils, as well as unique sculptures like the porcelain Tsarouchia (greek traditional shoes) created one by one by sculptor Christina Moralis, hats, and of course, clothes and shoes. Wonderful unique pieces for every dynamic woman seeking comfort and elegance in her appearances. The shoes are mainly leather sandals, and the majority of the clothes are made from Greek fabrics, with linen, silk, and cotton prevailing, designed by Les vacances d’Irina, for whom French Vogue has written rave reviews.

ΠΡΟΦΗΤΗΣ ΗΛΙΆΣ - PROPHET ELIAS

As we are approaching the hill of Profitis Elias, we make some intermediate stops along the way. Not to catch our breaths, but to admire the view. Even the houses have something to add up to the beauty on the scenery. But really, is it possible for someone to come to the island and not visit this place? No way!

As we are on our way to the top, the pathway becomes a cobbled path with steps leading you up to the gate of the Monastery, where the Prophet Elias welcomes you with open arms, looking at you from a mosaic that adorns the gate.

The katholikon of the monastery is a simple basilica with a dome, built according to the Mount Athos model, surrounded by cells or auxiliary buildings and was inaugurated in 1815, on the day of the feast of the Assumption of the Virgin. Today, several old portable icons are preserved, the Pantocrator in the dome, the Platytera and a magnificent wood-carved iconostasis. The monastery has a rich library, which was organized especially in 1870, while in the courtyard of the Monastery of the Prophet Elias there is a cistern with drinking water, a threshing floor and stables. During the Greek War of Independance of 1821, the Monastery was used as a prison, where Theodoros Kolokotronis and other generals were imprisoned for a short term.

MANSION OF FRANCIS VOULGARIS

This is one of the most important Mansions of 1800, which now houses Villa Hydrea. It has oriental elements, such as the wood-carved ceilings in Ottoman Rococo style. The marble fountain in the ballroom with the loft for musicians and the oil paintings of nautical themes also stand out. The Mansion is framed by large wooden windows overlooking the entire port, as well as beautiful terraces.

MUSEUM OF MODERN HISTORY

ΜΟΥΣΈΙΟ

Behind the Mansions of Voulgaris and Tombazis and among the pine trees stands the Mansion built by Georgios Kountouriotis, one of the largest shipowners of Hydra and an active politician during the Greek War of Independence. It was later inherited by his grandson Pavlos Kountouriotis, who was an admiral during the Balkan Wars and first President of the Hellenic Republic. Each of its windows, if opened, perfectly frames the landscape, as a work of art that sometimes depicts the sea and sometimes the picturesque settlement. Today it functions as a Museum of the modern history of Hydra.

In 2007 the painter, academic and teacher Panagiotis Tetsis (Hydra, 1925 - Athens, 2016) donated the house of his grandparents in Hydra to the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece in order for a museum to be created that will house the studio and his works, after his death. And that’s exactly what happened. This house is a typical example of traditional architecture in Hydra of the 19th century - beginning of the 20th, and it was in fact used for the professional activities of the family, housing a candle factory and a grocery store-tavern on the ground floor. The will of the painter and donor was the maintenance and promotion of the house as a whole, both the family home, and the the grocery store on the ground floor and the wine cellar in the basement, which are kept intact to this day, as well as the painter’s studio and his works in the upper floor. Today, after the documentation of the house and its contents, the works of the artist and the objects of the house are presented in a way that the special character of the whole emerges. The Tetsis House can be visited by anyone who requests it, in collaboration with the staff of the Historical House of Lazaros Koundouriotis, the branch of the National Historical Museum in Hydra, which has been operating as a museum since 2001.
