GRANDVIEW CONFLUX 01

Description:

This pavilion in Grandview Park, Vancouver, seamlessly integrates three distinct program areas within the park setting, fostering a flexible and inclusive gathering and performance space. It is situated at the junction of three main circulation paths that carve the site up into three distinct uses: children’s play, community interaction, and event hosting. The design acknowledges these each areas and caters to their unique needs on the site. Drawing inspiration from previous projects focused on inclusive design and permeability, the pavilion features a woven architectural form that offers shelter, rest, and play through outreaching elements like talk tubes and outdoor heaters catered to each of the the three programs.

Internally, the pavilion’s barrier-free access and flat performance space promote accessibility and versatility, allowing for varied activities such as performances, relaxation, or everyday actions. The design blurs the boundaries between performer and observer — even in placement of the required accessible washroom — inviting interaction and engagement from all park users. Ultimately, the pavilion aims to transcend the physical and social barriers of the site, encouraging organic community interaction and weaving together diverse user groups in a shared space of communal expression and connection.

The weaved structure allows for a diverse range of openings and moments where the pavilion can interact with users in unique ways. This diversity means the area not only accomodates, but even encourages, community members to interact and perform with each other. With a loose definition of performance, the pavilion can host acts of theatre, dance, assembly, education, daily functions, or emptiness.

False Creek in Vancouver was not always a polluted ocean vast floodplain used by the local Musqueam, Squamish, and decimated and the only green remaining are small microforests area, expanding the reach of the forest and educating on

ocean inlet. Long before colonizers moved west, much of the area surrounding the water was a and Tsleil-Waututh Nations for trap fishing and foraging. Now, the fish populations have been microforests of tough native species. This intervention along the Seaside Greenway reclaims the the history of the site by revealing the traditional stone tidal fishing traps below the backfill.

The mature microforest adjacent to the site was originally stopped abruptly at the edge of the Seaside Greenway. As can be seen below, the forest is quite diverse for its size, hosting many different plants and animals along its decent down to the water. The dugout is placed opposite the forest with species that compliment the existing ecosystem, finally allowing the forest to jump the Greenway. As the area develops in the future, the forest can be pushed further north into the endless sea of parking lots.

Unfortunately the fish have not been as adaptable as the land species. The polluted waters of False Creek no longer support the vast quantities of fish they once did, but they can return. The walls are lined with fossils of the species that once filled the Creek, such as the one I mocked up to the left. Above, children play in a net suspended from 3 large fir trees, symbolizing hope for the future. The dugout is a place where people can sit and remember the real history of the site; The way it existing of the majority of human time. It teaches about how this creek used to be a rich source of life and food. It teaches some of the fishing techniques historically used by the MST Nations. And hopefully, it instills a desire for locals to take care of False Creek, so these fish will one day return.

CROSSWALL MODULE 03

Completion: 2024

Description:

This project focused on creating a versatile modular wall system inspired by our exploration of wood as a material. We aimed to develop individual wooden pieces that interlock in any configuration, providing flexibility and customization. Utilizing traditional woodworking methods, we experimented with various joints, ultimately choosing the castle joint for its strength, beauty, and complexity.

The final design features X-shaped modules made from pressure-treated wood, each assembled from three blocks using friction-fit castle joints. The modules interlock to form a stable structure with an interior cavity for sound insulation, thermal insulation, or conduit placement.

The fabrication process involved cutting the joints using a a bandsaw and table saw, before moving into customization. This streamlined process ensured that the pieces could be theoretically mass-produced economically. Customization options we explored include staining, carving, perforating, texturing, and adding shelving, allowing each module to be tailored to specific aesthetic and functional needs.

The CrossWall module is a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern modular design.

THREE ITERATIONS 04

Description:

As the housing crisis continues to grow in Vancouver, the practicality of laneway housing promises an unimposing solution in existing low-density neighbourhoods. I developed three proposals for the site at Arthur Erickson’s deteriorating West Point Grey home, based on the following goals:

• Utilize glass and concrete strategically to reap the benefits of both solar gain and passive climate-control.

• Accomodate lifestyle flexibility.

• Appease my theoretical roomate’s desire for: a private bedroom, seclusion from neighbours, and their ferrets being treated as equal roommates.

WARNER CROSSING 05

Description:

Warner Crossing is a proposed 6-storey, 40-unit mixeduse residential tower in London, Ontario.

The surrounding neighbourhood has experienced decades of desertion and neglect, with little legislative help until recently. To tackle the ongoing problems with social equity and the ‘missing middle’ my design prioritizes inclusivity, affordability, and community. The tower features indoor and outdoor community spaces, a fitness facility, and theatre - all of which are accessible.

Character and Context:

The tower will be the first of its kind in the area, standing tall above the newly rezoned surrounding subburbs. The podium of the building salvages an existing abandoned storage facility, utilizing existing openings to save cost and reduce waste. The upper levels of the tower play off of the existing facility in shape, colour, and rhythm. The massing and setbacks are arranged to minimize interference of sightlines and sunlight on the surrounding properties.

The building will act as a recognizable landmark in the neighbourhood with its distinctively framed facade, which has also been featured prominently in the project’s marketing logo:

In total, the project called for 4 suite types, including loft-style penthouse suites and barrier-free variants.

Shown on the left is the Typical Suite ‘A’ layout, suitable for a small family or roomate situation. The suite provides clear private spaces, while remaining flexible in its open-concept shared spaces. In addition to the public terraces provided on L200 & L700, each suite has also been outfitted with a generous outdoor patio to encourage connection with the exterior.

WINDERMERE HAVEN 06

Description:

Acting as my first dive into residential design, Windermere Haven was a challenging and fun proposal for me. The program was simple yet demanding: Squeeze five residential units on to a previously single-family property, taking into consideration local demographics for family size and budget.

Rhythm, materiality, and scale were important considerations in my design of the elevation, to fuse with the existing neighbourhood’s historic aesthetic.

The challenging floor plans: Due to the tight site, squeezing the proper amount of units, bedrooms, shared space, and flexible areas was critical to my success in this project, but was also one of my biggest struggles.

Through hours of consultation with the client and block planning, I turned out a well-flowing and costefficient series of units. Each features an expansive kitchen, generous living space, and private outdoor spaces.

My client came to me with concerns about the safety and practicality of her existing front porch. Upon inspection, the 50 year old porch was crumpling and unfit for use. Originally suggested a simple replacement of the porch 1-to-1, but after a few consultations and renders I showed them how much their front yard has to offer.
