Waterfall House is designed for a single family who is looking for a house that is suitable for Thai modern living conditions. One of them is a modern house with a lot of glazing for transparency and natural light but comfortable to live in without too much heat from sunlight in Bangkok. A requirement of a compact house that feels spacious and connected is also a main design criteria.

For the connecting function, the slope becomes pleasant waterfalls that link the lower and upper living spaces. The half-level difference between two living spaces provides separation of activities without distance or a closed wall.

The central opening with the waterfalls allows visual connection to the upper floor and the air-flow which is necessary for a tropical house.

The waterfalls bring a cooling and tranquil atmosphere to the surrounding space. The front open-terrace with a wide span structure creates a unique entrance experience. This covered space provides good shading for the inner living room during late mornings and afternoons. The character of the house simply reflects the concept of connecting the living space and directly expresses the different volumes of each space through the continuous folding white surface.

The name “Waterfall House” comes from the feature of waterfalls at the center of the house.

This waterfall feature is a result of a split-level design which aims to connect both visual and accessibility aspects between living spaces.

The sloped surfaces of the waterfalls have two functions, dividing and connecting. For the dividing function, the sloped slab makes the half-level separation of parking space and lower level living space possible with no wasted space.

The initial impetus stemmed from my desire to refurbish the house and garden. Once I got to thinking about the renovation, I began to have the idea that a house can have more than one or two landscape designs; it could have a dozen.So I used this opportunity to create nine different designs as an example for those interested in taking these concepts to apply to their own gardens. In the construction of these works, many different types of materials and equipment were used; in selecting them I prioritised their ease of use and their ability to be recycled into subsequent designs, so that nothing would go to waste. Every single piece of material and every single tree can be reused again and again. Every step of the process was handled with meticulouscare. In addition to the beauty of the whole landscape, one must also pay attention to the fine details in order to create something that feels natural and imbued with a soul.

The project consists of the addition of a 400 square metre office space inside what was originally a steel factory, now partially used as a manufacturing unit for various metal parts and storage. In order to separate the office space from the vast factory area ‘an architecture within an architecture’ was created. Consisting of a steel structure on the mezzanine floor that has a geometric, faceted appearance finished in dark tones reminiscent of unpolished steel. The challenge was to design a new architecture with a strong character, but within the original context.

Ancient steel mills and the mechanical equipment of the past inspired the concept of S-Construction office. Metaphor utilized the combination of wood and steel in the design through observation of a hammer, a standard tool that has two major components, ‘steel and wood’. While the steel part of a hammer is intended to perform the hard work, the wooden handle is gently crafted to come into contact with the human hand.

With this observation, Metaphor created an office space that highlights the strong sense of steel in the exterior contrasting the softness of wood in the interior.

This private residential project was created by the owner’s programs and involvements from the first brief to the construction. The House is in a land plot which connects to the family compound by an open ground lawn. The site is prestigious since there are not many plots of land in the area where is still private house. Surrounded with low-rise condominium, this project is to find its own privacy using architectural planning.

The site is quite narrow rectangular and the building efficiently occupies maximum length of the land. The house has to fit in gently with all existing houses in the master plan. Most of the openings are designed to face the courtyard while the back solid wall faces the high neighbor building.

Most projects featured in are located in Bangkok Metropolitan where views and land plot are limited. The renovation or expansion house that forms part of a densely packed family is still increasing due to the needs to stay close to parents and the high price of land in the inner city. Staying closer to workplace could reduce traveling hours to work. All factors from land size to owner’s dreams and ideas lifestyle create unique houses. Architect’s skills and imagination really push up new way of living, atmosphere, health and wellbeing and distinction in one way or another

Bang Weak, located in the north-west of Bangkok, adjacent to the serene canal to the north and the owner’s brother’s house to the east. In 2011 this area was affected by the great flood and the seventy-year-old wood house was destroyed. However, some materials such as teak wood could be reused for the new house. The owner requested a flexible outdoor space and no air-conditioning. Also the house should be accommodated with culture factors. All of those are specific requirements for creating suitable design.

The architect was assigned to re-design and add more narrative meaning of “home and work” as a piece of architecture to suit owner’s lifestyle. “The Nest” was named to this house as the newly-wed intend to build a new family the way birds do.

Outwards views are not necessary. Voids were therefore specifically designed to conceal activities on the third floor but still allow ventilation and natural light.

The mainAXONOMETRIC roof structure, exterior skin structure and internal framework are designed as truss membranes and act as multi solid supports and also as pillars for the third floor interwoven structural pieces just like in bird’s nest.

The angle of roof rafter is rotated to create space underneath for the functions inside. It also shows roof structure.

White metal sheets are cladded all over the roof and exterior walls with 5 centimetres. of insulation. This method helps save time and cost and was effective for heat protection. Finishing materials are chosen from ordinary products i.e. polished cement. Some parts are just covered with simple lino on the top. This will open more options for alterations of usage in the future. The white colour of the building was chosen to collect charcoal ashes in the air to symbolically represent architecture’s self-perception and expression towards the surrounding atmosphere before those ashes will eventually be washed away in the next rain.

Bespoke steel doors mark thresholds between solid and void, detailed to allow the concrete’s mass and texture to dominate visually. Engineered wood and striated polycarbonate echo the formwork, using more delicate lines. A counter-cum-stair formed within one of the concrete walls yields to a sleek steel bridge across the central void to the opposite wall. The stair bridge takes inspiration from the sky for its color, and the tree outside for its shape, without compromising its status as an industrial object.

The design concept was derived from a bird’s nest; which was intended to reflect a warm, harmonious home character. The staircase landing, which was the key part of the building’s circulation, was designed to simulate the character of a bird nest. Consequently, residents pass “The Bird Nest” whenever they move across rooms or areas. For better viewing of the home’s surrounding, the bird nest structure was built above a lagoon-styled swimming pool. A concrete raft foundation was conceived by engineer Emilio Giovanni Gollo to distribute the considerable weight of the building’s Carrara marble across the soft ground (this technique was not new: Wat Bot Samsen floats on a teak log raft).

The exterior style is neoclassical spiced with baroque. The interior style is Renais-

sance, in plan derived from St Peter’s in Rome. The religious typology connected the building’s Western form with the divinity of the Chakri dynasty.

The interior is breathtaking. The vaulted and domed space has a decorated ceiling teeming with life, like a temple mural above the conventions of its Corinthian columns. Names of Chakri kings are surrounded by garudas, cherubs, flowers, foliage, birds, deer and elephants.

The aesthetic is both Art Nouveau and neoclassical; the allegorical frescoes of dynastic themes in the domes recall those by Raphael in the papal apartments in Rome. Rama I is shown on a battle elephant returning from Cambodia; Rama II and Rama III, respectively, inspecting Wat Arun and the Grand Palace; Rama IV as the guardian of religious freedom; Rama V freeing slaves. An additional fresco was painted at the entrance to the hall, illustrating the coronation of Rama VI in 1911.

The building was commandeered by the People’s Party in 1932 and rebranded the nation’s parliament, which it remained until 1974 when the National

I nt rod u c t i on Exploring Bangkok uncovers the history of the City of Angels (Krung Thep) and describes its evolution by looking at its architecture—from the royal capital founded at Thonburi by King Taksin following the destruction of Ayutthaya, looted and torched by the Burmese in 1767, to the ocean of modernity around the historic centre.

The historic centre recognised today is not Thonburi on the west bank of the Chao Phraya River but its successor on the east bank, Rattanakosin Island, established by King Rama I in 1782. He founded the Chakri dynasty and created Bangkok’s enduring architectural identity—and the illusion that the city is an ancient settlement—when he built the Grand Palace and Wat Phra Kaew (Temple of the Emerald Buddha). Those buildings established the Rattanakosin style, inspired by and intended to recall the glories of Ayutthaya. Founded officially in 1350 after the disintegration of the Sukhothai kingdom, Ayutthaya was sited on an island in the Chao Phraya River, the River of Kings, 80 kilometres north of Bangkok. It was defensible (until the Burmese onslaught) and accessible to foreign trade, for which it was an entrepôt and from which it flourished.

Its gilded palaces and temples dazzled foreign visitors in its 18th-century heyday, as Bangkok’s Grand Palace complex does now.

wings with fretwork on the eaves and roof ridges. The building was reflected on the surface of the Old City Canal, an idyllic image, almost Venetian, lost when that section of the canal disappeared under the approach road constructed for Phra Pinklao Bridge in 1973.

It has a double door and a wide corridor leading to a sculpture garden with contemporary art. The biggest exhibit is the oldest—a water tank raised on a structure modelled on the Eiffel Tower.

The gallery was originally designed for the Royal Mint which was moved here from the Grand Palace. The mint moved

again around 1970 and the property was transferred to the Fine Arts Department which rehabilitated the heritage building as the National Gallery in 1977. The main salon is a grand, neoclassical room with polished wood floors, Tuscan columns and wall and ceiling mouldings well preserved. The Palladian exterior is as it was in 1902, with round-arched windows alternating with pilasters, stucco patterned like stonework and kite-shaped tiles on the roofs. Rama V’s coat of arms of Siam is centred on the pediment above the old entrance to the two-storey centre block, which is flanked by single-storey

The big, two-storey house has a whiff of Italian Art Nouveau on the front elevation which faces the river. The entrance is on Phra Athit Road but the house was designed to be accessible by boat, like others nearby with private piers. It was the home of Prince Vorarit, ambassador to Britain and the United States and a minister of public works. Crown Properties took over the property in 1937. During the Second World War, Free Thai agents met their leader, Pridi Banomyong, here and at what is now the Unicef office. The piers were convenient

The tower anchors the composition which looks asymmetric but has a formal ground plan. There is a large and well preserved front garden and a courtyard behind the loggia. The effect is of a miniature Phaya Thai Palace.
