LHU cutting programs by 2020: Dance and Theater to be cut first Majors with low enrollment

Lock Haven University has made the decision to cut the dance program as a minor. This decision comes after a projected downturn in enrollment by 2020.

Along with the dance program, theater is also expected to be cut as a major and minor. The announcement of this decision spurred an outcry from those involved with the dance and theater programs at Lock Haven University. Those

minors, and over 100 students performing in a concert at the end of each semester. There are 300 seats in Sloan Auditorium and every performance sells out with students and community coming to see the performances.

Alyssa Rhody, a senior studying criminal justice, said “Dancing is life. Dancing is what made me get out of bed last semester. Dancing is a way to express yourself and let out all your stress and anxiety and energy. If I could dance with Jayme every day I would. It would kill me personally to see the dance program go and, as a soon-to-be alumni, it hurts knowing that it will be gone”.

Students who have graduated from the dance program have used their minor to find a job over their major, or have paired their major and minor together.

For example, psychology students have been able to use it to go into dance therapy.

Some students have expressed concern that the programs being cut and the reasoning behind it.

Provost and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs, Donna Wilson, explained the reasoning behind the decisions made.

The process took 18 months; none of the decisions made were sudden.

Provost Wilson, during the 18 month process, visited every department and talked with them about the process that would be taking place.

Sarah Filipski, an alumnus of LHU, said, “While looking at universities, I looked not only for schools that had my intended major, but also schools that had dance minors. The fact that this institution could give me the opportunity to continue dancing was something that truly drew me to it. I know that this is true of many other students, too.”

The process began with the examination of every program that Lock Haven offered and then assessed them based on several factors. They asked how large the university is likely to be in 2020, and how many of those students would be in an undergraduate program and how many would be in graduate programs.

With a significant decrease from a projection of 5,300 students a couple of years ago to the current projection of 4,600 students by 2020, there would need to be a reduction in order to manage everything.

In order to do so, Lock Haven looked at its ideal program array based on occupational outlook and emerging occupational outlook and by comparing enrollment in a program against the resources the program uses to run. Lock Haven also created a new objective for itself as a school in President Fiorentino’s vision statement.

VISION STATEMENT Lock Haven University will be nationally recognized for transforming students’ lives by providing: • A welcoming and inclusive community of supportive faculty and staff that prioritizes the well-being and intellectual life of our students and also challenges them to ever-greater success.

• A strong academic foundation that promotes the collaboration, innovation, and critical thinking necessary for navigating and succeeding in an ever-changing world.

• An engaging community with a diversity of cultural perspectives that encourages students to be responsible global citizens.

• A commitment to public service as a resource for personal, educational, cultural, and economic development for the region and state.

There is an understanding of the joy and pride that every program at Lock Haven provides to its students. Lock Haven will be utilizing a teach-out plan to provide a schedule for all students currently declared in a program to allow them to complete the program.

Despite this information, the students in the minor have said they have not received any information regarding a plan for future semesters. Hattie Enterline, a freshman, said “I was shocked when I heard the program was being cut. The dance program here is very hands on and incredible. I can’t believe that somebody just can take away a program that so many love here and that people seem to be very passionate about.”

The university plans to keep Dance Consort as a club on campus, without having classes. Dancers are continually learning new techniques and are enhancing their dancing during every class that they take during their career.

LHU has the goal of making these cuts without retrenching jobs by hoping to find appropriate reassignments. In lieu of cuts, with the goal of creating programs in emerging areas, Lock Haven plans to add a major in data and information visualization.

As described on LHU’s website about the dance program, “The developing dance program at Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania encompasses dance as a Fine Art as well as a Humanity. The program is based on the development of students physically, creatively, scholastically, and professionally.”

LHU offers nine dance classes all taught by Professor Host with an average of 25 to 30 students in a class.

The classes offered include basic and advanced levels of Modern and Ballet as well as learning the history of the different dances and more about how the body works during certain moves.

The university describes the program as “[encompassing] dance as a Fine Art as well as a Humanity. The program is based on the development of students physically, creatively, scholastically, and professionally. Technique classes in Modern and Ballet are imbued with a strong anatomical base and complimented with courses in Dance History, Composition, and Dance Education.”

At the end of every semester there is a Dance Consort show displaying the work students have put together not only in classes but also from student choreographies as a part of the dance club. About 1,200 people attend the performances, making every show sold out and having to turn away people.

A ‘Midsummer’ Interview Mary Jones

A&E Editor mej102@lhup.edu Every year, the University Players puts together a main stage production for the spring semester. Last year, it was the musical “Footloose.”

This year, it’s one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

I had the pleasure of sitting down with Melanie Pratt, a junior theater major performing in “Midsummer Night’s Dream,” about the play itself.

EE: Who are you playing in “A Midsummer Night’s Dream?” Was it someone you wanted to play?

I am playing the role of Puck. He’s the fairy king’s lieutenant and a goblin, a knavish sprite of the wood. I went into auditions hoping to read for Puck, because he is my favorite character from the play. He’s playful, cunning and mischievous.

EE: Why did you decide to do this year’s main stage play?

I was very excited after learning that we were doing a piece from Shakespeare. I was even more thrilled to know that it was “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” I know this play pretty well, so I had a bit more confidence in myself to audition for it, rather than to appoint myself as backstage help.

EE: Is this your first year doing the main stage play?

Have you done the plays in the Countdown Theater?

This is my first year performing in a play at the university level. I was an Athenian citizen for the same play when we put it on in my high school auditorium. Most of the time, I’m backstage help, or I am the house manager for both main stage and the Countdown Theater.

EE: What was the audition process like?

For most of the plays we have on main stage, we enter into the art gallery in Sloan and are given monologues from various characters to look over.

We then emote them towards the director as best as we can. The director will sometimes give us other monologues to read until she is satisfied with what she has seen. Sometimes, we’re also given dialog between two characters so the director can see how people interact with others on stage.

EE: What is a basic rehearsal like?

Rehearsals grow from reading off the pages to memorizing those lines, to working with scenic elements, to running the whole show, costumes and all from top to bottom. It’s a work in progress, but we it’s definitely come together nicely.

EE: Who is the director? Can you tell us a little about him/her?

ful lady who is very insightful and knowledgeable about the subject she teaches and how she directs.

This semester, she is teaching Women in Theatre, a seminar I am currently enrolled in. She has gone above and beyond the call of duty as a director, and put together the costumes for the show as well.

EE: Are you excited for opening night tonight?

I am absolutely thrilled for tonight. I am a bit nervous, but I believe that having the right amount of anxiety is a good thing. It keeps you on your toes, and keeps you moving forward.

EE: When does the play open to students and the public?

The play opens tonight, and plays until April 9, and then April 14-16 at 7:30 p.m. There is also a matinee performance at 2 p.m on April 9.

EE: Is there anything else you’d like our readers to know?

Tonight, April 7 7:30 p.m.: The Mainstage Theatre Production! This spring brings Shakespeare’s “Midsummer Night’s Dream” to the Sloan Auditorium.

Directed by Ramona Broomer, this student-done production is one of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies.

When the duke of Athens is preparing for his marriage to the queen of the Amazons, the master of Revels has to find suitable entertainment. Meanwhile, four young lovers of the court go into the forest, where they get wrapped up in the schemes of the arguing Fairy King and Queen.

This play opens tonight and goes on until the 16. There is also a Matinee at 2 p.m. on Saturday, April 9.

Sunday, April 10 7 p.m.: Spring Concert! If you were lucky enough to get a ticket, come on down to the Thomas Field House to see Fetty Wap live!

Check and check. So what makes CBS’ latest hit drama greater than the sum of its parts? It’s all about the characters.

Airing Sunday nights at 8 p.m., “Madam Secretary” follows the career and home life of Secretary of State, Elizabeth Adams McCord (Tea Leoni). She is appointed to the position after the previous secretary dies in a mysterious plane accident. Now Elizabeth must use her skills as a former CIA analyst to handle delicate and complicated foreign policy issues and unravel dangerous con-

spiracies. Balancing her stressful work life and life with her husband (Tim Daly) and three children proves to be an increasingly difficult task, becoming more and more intertwined.

This political drama benefits from both natural storytelling and terrific performances. Leoni is able to not only stand on her own, but firmly steals the spotlight in every scene. She’s able to effortlessly transition from serious matters in the situation room to navigating a parent/teacher conference. The perfect match to keep up with her is Daly. He’s not the typical man you would expect to be a leading religious scholar.

(He is named one of the hottest political spouses in the show after all.) And yet, there’s no need to question his credentials when Daly’s Henry starts nerding out about reincarnated goddesses or cracks a bad Saint Francis joke.

A&E Continued from pg. 7 The series draws inspiration from current events, which gives it a needed sense of urgency. The attack of a U.S. Embassy in Yemen in “Another Benghazi,” information leak in “The Operative,” teenage girls joining terrorists and a Malala-like female activist in “Left of the Boom” are just a few examples of topics ripped straight from the headlines. While a little heavyhanded at times, you can’t help but be drawn into stories that are so relevant to the current status of our world.

Ultimately, its characters drive the show. Elizabeth, Bess to her friends, is a strong, capable woman. That’s not really ground breaking. What’s special about her is all the complexity and depth she has. Elizabeth is thoughtful and analytical in her approach to international issues, traits that served her well as a CIA analyst and then as a political science professor. She’s not afraid to make the tough decisions at a moment’s notice. Falling in line with the president’s policies is a necessary part of the job, but she makes sure her voice is heard in the conversation. As a mother, Elizabeth is often wracked with guilt about how being Secretary of State interferes with her children’s’ lives. Those moments with her family are what ground the series in reality.

Many working mothers have similar thoughts, minus threats of nuclear war.

Depictions of strong marriages can be few and far between in prime-time dramas. The McCords have a realistic marriage with ups and downs, but they always work through their conflicts.

So what really makes a hit drama? It doesn’t hurt to have big names attached, both in front and behind the camera. An intriguing concept is certainly what draws people to watch it initially. But great characters make great shows, and “Madam Secretary” has those in spades.

“Make What You Wear” workshops encourage “DIY Movement” Taylor Smela

Staff Writer tgs8726@lhup.edu Creativity is often overlooked in today’s fast-paced society. However, Valerie Beggs, a professional fashion designer, is hoping to increase confidence and creativity in the world through clothing design. She is the mastermind behind “Make What You Wear” workshops designed to teach people of all ages how to make clothing for themselves. Valerie considers herself to be a “devoted creator” and wants to inspire people to not rely as heavily on manufacturers to produce their clothing.

Valerie grew up in the 1960’s when many Americans not only mended their own clothing, but they typically also made their own from scratch. Valerie hopes to instill these values in today’s population and make them less dependent as consumers. She refers to this change in consumers relying on themselves to provide material things, rather than manufacturers, as the “DIY Movement.”

“Make What You Wear” workshops offer both private and group sessions that range from teaching beginner to advanced skills focused on clothing design.

“Refashioning,” or transforming old clothing into a new look, is also a skill the classes focus on teaching to students. Valerie says that anyone is welcome to attend the class and “start experimenting, working with fabric, and let their imagination run free. It’s up to them what they want their clothing to say about them.” She says, “Once people get started in the class, they usually find it so satisfying to work with their hands.”

Valerie says that many of the participants in the class find the class to be a “rewarding and uniquely expressive” experience.

People of all walks of life attend Valerie’s workshop in Williamsport eager to learn about clothing creation and design. Valerie says that although designing clothing enhances the “fertility of the mind,” younger students are often the most creatively uninhibited when designing.

Recently, a young designer made a dress for Easter out of refurbished clothing.

When asked if she had any advice for someone interested in designing clothing, Valerie said “Anyone can be a clothing designer, you just have to release your inhibitions, let your mind wander, and create.”

Big things are in store for the “Make What You Wear” workshops in the upcoming months. On May 7th Valerie will be hosting “Make What You Wear’s” third fashion show, called Strut. The fashion show will feature designs made by those who have taken the class and local couture looks. Upcoming “Make What You Wear” workshops include a “Make Your Own Tee Shirt” session and a “Fashion Drawing” intensive class taught by artist Joann Landis of Parsons and Fashion Institute in New York City. These classes will each be three hours long and begin in June.

If you are interested in attending one of the “Make What You Wear” workshops, classes are inexpensive and take place Tuesday nights from 6:30-8:30. The classes are held at the Pajama Factory in Williamsport on the second floor. Reservations for spots in the workshops are preferred. I never used the Google Calendar app until this semester and it is already one of the best decisions I have ever made. It helps keep me on track with when and where I need to be. I have two jobs this semester and a full course load and I was feeling more than a little overwhelmed, but the Google Calendar app is free with a Google account.

Color Coding: In the app, you can set a color for each event you add. Not only does this make it more visually appealing than just plain monochromatic calendars but it makes it easier to identify the different things you added.

They also fade after the event has passed so that you don’t get confused and look at the wrong day. I made each of my courses and jobs a different color. It makes them stand out from each other and it is easy to identify what each item is.

And it makes it pretty to look at.

Gaps: The biggest problem I had getting ready for this semester, was not being able to really SEE the amount of time I had between my classes. After I put all of my course times into Google Calendar, I could see the blocks of time that I had between them.

This makes it easier to plan time for friends and homework.

Reminders: Most students procrastinate, but you can have the Google Calendar send you reminders for where you need to be and when. More than once I have gotten sidetracked and lost track of time, but I set reminders in the app so when that happens I get a notification. Notifications can be set for however early you

Anyone who has heard the words “Star Wars” knows that the lightsaber is the most memorable weap-

on of the franchise, and for a good reason.

From the very first movie, the lightsaber is known as the Jedi’s weapon. In the original trilogy, there is a limited variety in colors of the lightsabers, as well as in the style of fighting and stances. These aspects are flushed out in the prequels. The prequels, which a lot of fans tend to cast off as being terrible because of the amount of CGI involved, show that before the rise of the Galactic Empire, there were numerous colors for lightsabers, and each color had its own meaning.

What always fascinated me about the prequels, and now the sequels as well, was the artistic style of the lightsaber duels.

The lightsaber is, as Obi-Wan Kenobi stated, “an elegant weapon for a more civilized age.” There are many forms, or stances, for a Jedi to use, each focusing on different aspects of a fight. Some were favored defense, while some were more balanced.

Others, such as the form used by Kylo Ren in The Force Awakens, stress the use of the Force.

Though there are many battles throughout the Star Wars franchise, some of the most memorable lightsaber duels came from the prequels, including the long awaited duels that featured a beloved original trilogy character: Yoda. However, of all of the battles, one stands out from the rest; the final battle of the prequels, between Darth Vader and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

The battle’s thrilling pace, along with the stellar match-up fans were waiting for. If there is any battle that showcases the art of lightsaber dueling, this is it.

There are so many aspects to “Star Wars” that people of all ages enjoy, but these are just a few examples of those aspects.

Student of the Week: Find her at BrickYard Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu

Name: Brittany Hipple Year: Senior Major: Pre-K 4/Early Childhood and Special Education Walking up to a random group of people and asking one of them to be student of the week is never going to get easier, but luckily, I’ve met this student of the week before. Brittany and I met on the court of an intramural volleyball game when we found ourselves on the same team through mutual friends.

When she’s not spiking the ball on the court, you can also find Brittany on campus as the President of Student Pennsylvania State Education Association, which is a Pa teachers’ union but the student chapter. Brittany is really proud of her club and of herself for being a student leader on campus for such a club and for so long.

Brittany also sang in the Cabaret this spring because of her love of musical theater. If she had a day off, she would drive to NYC to see a show because she loves them so much and it’s where she feels most comfortable. Brittany also loves to read in her free time; her favorite book being “Still Alice.”

Brittany is currently working on her upcoming teaching career.

Currently, she works at Crossroads Child Learning Center. She hopes to one day work on a military base overseas, hopefully in Italy, but Spain is a close second in location choices. She has dreams of backpacking through Europe and paying off her debts. If she had no monetary limitations, she would just travel around experiencing the world because she’s never been

outside of the United States before. Eventually, Brittany wants to get her PhD and teach as a professor of early childhood.

Her favorite class throughout her college career is Inquiry into Biology with Dr. Seiler. She enjoyed learning about science and thought it was very interesting.

Brittany thought the class was very engaging and that Dr. Seiler is an amazing professor. She especially loved dissecting a pig heart.

Brittany says that class will help her teach science in her classroom.

If you want to meet Brittany and learn more about her, you can probably find her at The Brickyard in Williamsport because she loves their food and she’s a beer and burgers kind of girl.

Trump’s statements reveal cracks in pro-life argument Meghan Mausteller Staff Writer mlm6713

Late last week, Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, voiced opinions about abortion that raise prominent questions about the ongoing debate over abortion rights in the United States.

At a forum on March 30, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews questioned Trump about his current stance on abortion. When pushed for a detailed answer, Trump stated that if abortion was banned in the United States “there [would have] to be some form of punishment” for the woman seeking the abortions. After facing backlash from both pro-life and pro-choice groups, Trump retracted his statement in favor of the slightly more moderate stance that only the abortion provider should be punished.

However, Trump’s statement raises pertinent questions regarding the pro-life argument.

Pro-life supporters attest that life begins at conception, which means that a zygote has the same right to life as a toddler or a fullygrown adult. With this understanding of human life, both a woman and her abortion provider should be viewed as accomplices in the murder of an innocent person.

But this is not the case.

Instead, pro-life supporters paint women seeking abortions as pitiful and confused rather than adults capable of making their own rational decisions.

With the Center for Disease Control and Prevention reporting 699,202 legal abortions in 2012 alone, it is highly unlikely that every single one of these women was pressured into receiving an abortion by external forces, like her parents, significant other or organizations like Planned Parenthood.

Instead, it just might be that many women in the United States choose to have an abortion because they felt it was the right decision to make for themselves.

However, pro-life supporters know that if they held these nearly 700,000 women accountable for their abortions, there is no way every single one of them could be tried and charged for murder. If they were, that would place 30 percent of the female population under the age of 45 in prison, according to the Guttmacher Institute’s statistics on abortion rates in the United States.

By viewing women who receive abortions as fragile and incapable of making their own decisions, it allows the pro-life faction to pretend that their “cause” is women friendly.

Marjorie Dannenfelser, the president of the Susan B. Anthony List, an organization that works toward advancing pro-life women in politics, stated, “We believe that women are being punished before the abortion even occurs.”

But when paired with actual abortion statistics, this statement shows how the pro-life faction is actually trying to find a way out of incarcerating 700,000 women annually rather than actually proving that they care about women and women’s issues.

If pro-life arguments were truly about morals rather than controlling a woman’s life and reproductive choices, pro-life politicians would not hesitate to fight for the incarceration of both women seeking abortions and their abortion providers. But instead, they devalue women and women’s abilities to make their own decisions by insinuating that only a woman in a distraught and unhealthy mental state could choose to have an abortion.

The right to reproductive health is guaranteed by the United Nations, and for women it includes the ability to decide when and if they want to have children. Implying that a woman should be punished on any level for receiving an abortion is an infringement on women’s rights.

Even creating a cultural environment where someone could claim that a woman is “punished before the abortion even occurs” is wrong, and Trump’s recent statement shows just how detached many pro-life arguments are from a woman’s reality.

The following article is a work of satire and may contain sarcasm.

Last week, Donald Trump announced his new plan for advancing the issue of women’s rights. He strategically unveiled his latest cutting-edge idea in a town hall interview with MSNBC’s Chris Matthews.

Trump was quoted saying “there has to be some form of punishment” for women who have abortions. Now some people are calling this statement “victim blaming” or “a violation of women’s rights,” but those people are what Trump would call “wrong.”

Trump’s suggestion is nothing short of pure genius. He is simply suggesting that these women spice up their sex lives a little bit--maybe they’d like a little punishment. Who are these bleeding heart liberals to say that these promiscuous ladies wouldn’t like a little whip and chain action? After all, they’ve been very bad girls.

Trump is simply suggesting that they haven’t considered all of their options. He doesn’t want them to be tied down by the traditional expressions and expectations of women’s sexuality… unless they like being tied down. And who can blame him for trying to offer suggestions about their sex lives? After all, they wouldn’t need abortions if they weren’t running around having all kinds of loose sex anyway.

Trump is just trying to keep it interesting. He knows what these ladies want, and he’s going to give it to them like they like it. Finally, a candidate who’s not afraid to make it hurt a little. As always, we can count on this man to provide tips and ideas for improving the lives of the most misunderstood American citizens. So thank you Trump, for rejecting vanilla politics and keeping things spicy.

Trump is the shining example of women’s liberation. I think we need more candidates with incredible media power and just enough separation from the real issues to keep them from thoughtfully considering the lives and situations of others.

Softball sweeps Golden Eagles in doubleheader Alex Wahl

Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University softball team (22-9 Overall, 5-2 PSAC) continued to show its dominance last Saturday at Lawrence Field with a doubleheader sweep against Clarion University (3-19 Overall, 1-6 PSAC) with both games ending in five innings with two 8-0 shutouts.

Clarion’s Marissa Peterson started the first inning by striking out. Clarion got its first base runner thanks to Taylor Nonnenberg, who reached first base on an error by LHU’s Bekah Slattery.

The next batter, Christina Tressler, reached first by avoiding a double play for the second out. Paige Baker then ended the first half of the inning with a swinging strikeout.

After Clarion got the first two batters out with a strikeout and a groundout, McKenna Garlock got the first hit of the game with a double to deep left field on a 2-0 count. Michelle Holweger then ended the first inning with a fly out to left field, leaving one runner on base.

After a 1-2-3 top of the second inning, Lock Haven made sure to get the lead earlier, and they definitely delivered. Jodi Weaknecht started the inning with a 3-bagger to deep center field and later scored the first run on a wild pitch by Sarah Gossard. Rachel Mouillesseaux kept the rally going with a single. Becca Caputo reached first base with a single to put runners on first and second with nobody out. Both runners advanced to second and third base on another wild pitch. After Slattery flied out to center field, Paige Stuppy then reached first on a 4-pitch walk to load the bases with one out. Jessica Strouse made the score 2-0 with a single on a 0-2 count to keep the rally going. Faith Ceely became the second out of the inning with a groundout to second base, but recorded an RBI to make the score 3-0. Garlock made it 5-0 with a single.

Holweger later hit a double to center field to make the score 6-0, who later advanced to third base on a passed ball.

Weaknecht became the third out with a fly out to third base to end the monstrous second inning.

Clarion’s Sarah Gossard started the top of the third with a line out to first base. Audrey Hummel got Clarion in the hit column with a single to right center field. Hummel later became the first out of the second out after leaving the base too early. Peterson then struck out swinging to end the top half of the third inning.

Mouillesseaux started the bottom of the third with a single and then advanced to second base on a throwing error. Clarion got out of trouble, however, with two pop outs and a ground to the shortstop.

After a painless first half of the fourth inning with a fly out and two strikeouts, Garlock was the only base runner after a two-out single to left field.

Clarion’s Casey Wilcox doubled to left field to kick off the top of the fifth inning. Hoffman later singled to put runners on the corners with two outs. LHU prevented Clarion’s first run thanks to a fielder’s choice to keep the score 6-0.

Weaknecht started the bottom of the fifth inning with a leadoff walk.

Mouillesseaux later grounded into a double play to clear the bases. After the double play, LHU made the Golden Eagles pay for it. Caputo started the rally with a double to left field, who later advanced to third base on a passed ball.

Slattery later walked to put runners on the corners with two outs. Slattery then stole second base to have two runners in scoring positions. Paige Stuppy then became the hero with a walk-off 2-RBI single to give Lock Haven the 8-0 mercy rule victory in five innings. Slattery earned her 12th win of the season after only giving up three hits in the game. Clarion’s Sarah Gossard’s record dropped to 1-3.

Lock Haven later won game two with another 8-0 mercy rule victory for its 22nd win of the season.

Lock Haven University softball will return home this Saturday, April 9 with a doubleheader against Indiana University of Pennsylvania. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Lacrosse beats IUP in double-OT Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University women’s lacrosse team defeated Indiana (Pa.) 10-9 in double overtime on Saturday at Charlotte Smith Field.

The then No. 6 Bald Eagles (9-1, 5-1 PSAC) got the game-winner from sophomore Ashley Gochenaur with 1:25 left in the second overtime to beat the then No. 20 Crimson Hawks (7-4, 5-1 PSAC).

Lock Haven sophomore Alex O’Herrick tied the game at one early in the first half, before Rachel Engler scored three straight goals, each assisted by Shannon Bissnette, putting the Eagles up 4-1. O’Herrick then scored her second of the game, followed by Gochenaur’s 12th goal of the season to make it 6-1 Lock Haven.

IUP added two more goals before the half, Gochenaur added her second of the game and Lock Haven took a 7-3 lead into halftime, seeming to be in control.

It was a tale of two halves at Charlotte Smith Field, though, as IUP scored six of the eight goals in the second half to tie the game at nine.

Engler scored her fourth of the game, 36th of the season, and freshman Karli Gilbert scored her third of the season before Lock Haven saw IUP score the next four goals in an eight-minute span to send the game to overtime.

In what was a hard-fought battle, Gochenaur completed the hat trick with her 14th goal of the season, giving Lock Haven the 10-9 victory.

Engler currently ranks second in the PSAC with 36 goals while Biss-

nette and Kilian both rank in the top 10 in the PSAC in assists. Bissnette had four assists on Saturday, while Kilian had three.

Hannah Houde made 15 saves and got the win in goal for Lock Haven.

The Bald Eagles fell to No. 12 in this week’s Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches’ Association (IWLCA) poll. West Chester is the only PSAC team ranked ahead of Lock Haven at No. 7. West Chester is 10-1 on the season.

IUP and East Stroudsburg (10-2) are the only other PSAC teams ranked in the top 20, as they are ranked No. 19 and No. 20, respectively.

Lock Haven will host PSAC foe Slippery Rock on Saturday at 1p.m. at Charlotte Smith Field. Slippery Rock sits at 7-3 overall on the season.

16 SPORTS Men’s volleyball club aims to make playoffs next year Sam Wilson

Staff Writer slw2547@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University men’s volleyball club offers a great way to stay active and meet some new people on campus. The club is student-run and only meets a few times a week. There is no experience necessary and no cuts take place.

Nick Bishop, president of the club, says some of the benefits of joining the team are the friendships you will make and the leadership skills you will learn.

“I didn’t know a lot of these guys before I joined, but now we all hang out together outside of practices and matches,” said Bishop.

There will be three to four tournaments in the fall and eight to ten conference matches during the season, which takes place in the spring semester. This past season they went 5-3 overall.

Koa Mook, junior, said “We expect to make playoffs next year.

There’s no reason we shouldn’t.”

Practices are held Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during

the season and vary while out of season. “We prefer the guys make it to 90 percent of practices. But we understand if you have something more important,” said Bishop.

Every practice takes place in the Zimmerli Gymnasium from 8-10 pm.

Keep in mind, these times are subject to change next year, depending on available gym times.

Typical practices start out with hitting lines then move on to drills.

Since it is run by the students, the players decide what skills they need to focus on and all pitch in ideas for what drills would be the most beneficial. After drills, they end every practice with a scrimmage.

Ryan Shields, senior libero, said, “I joined the team because I missed high school volleyball. It’s so similar.

I love it. I still get to play at a competitive level, but not have the stress of a coach always on my back.”
