Brussels bombings linked to Paris attacks.

At approximately 8a.m. on March 22, two bombs went off in the Brussels Airport, killing 30 people and injuring more than 200. At 9a.m., there was another explosion at the Maelbeek Metro station and all of the public transportation was shut down. The radical group, ISIS, claimed responsibility for the attacks, just days after Salah Abdesalm, one of the bombers from the Paris attacks, was arrested. There was a third bomb found in the airport hours after the bombings that was detonated. A manhunt for the third attacker is still underway as police have been looking for him since before the Brussels bombings because he is believed to be apart of the Paris Attacks back in November.

Hidden chambers discovered possibly containing Queen Nefertiti remains.

Radar scans of Tutankhamun’s tomb in Egypt’s Valley of the Kings show the possibility of two hidden chambers possibly containing the remains of Queen Nefertiti. The scans reveal that there might be two hidden tombs off the main chamber. The antiquities minister Mamdouh Eldamaty believes “It could be the discovery of the century.” The discovery of King Tut’s tomb in 1922 yielded over 5,000 artifacts, and this possible new discovery could lead to even more understanding of the life of the ancient Egyptian King.

American student sentenced to hard labor in North Korea.

American student, Otto Warmbier, was sentenced to 15 years of hard labor in North Korea March 16. Warmbier was detained for trying to steal a propaganda poster while on a tour of Pyongyang. The student confessed to the offense which is being called a crime against the state by the North Korean Supreme Court.

‘The Bachelor’ ending breaking SeaWorld ending their killer whale breeding. hearts.

SeaWorld has announced that it will stop it’s breeding program of killer whales. This decision came after criticism for animal welfare groups about the treatment of their whales, which got greater attention after a 2013 documentary. SeaWorld also said they will be phasing out their theatrical shows and will be partnering with Humane society of the United States.

The season finale of ‘The Bachelor’ was last Monday, March 15, ending with Ben Higgins to chose Lauren Bushnell to be his bride over JoJo Fletcher. The ending came as a surprise as many of the fans were hoping for Fletcher to win over Higgins heart. The new couple doesn’t want to wait long for their wedding, but do want to enjoy being engaged after having to spend three months apart.

The new Bachelorette for season 12 is Fletcher, many are happy to see how love turns out for her, this season will air May 23.

Spring has been making its gradual presence known in Lock Haven. The hint of warmer weather brings with it the promise of the outdoor activities that Lock Haven is so brimming with. With the dike and numerous waterways in the area, there are opportunities for fishing, swimming, rafting and more, but do we stop to think what might be in the water?

With events like the Flint water crisis or even the recent main break in Lock Haven, the question of “what is in our water” is on the forefront of society’s mind, and for seniors Taylor Thomas and Alexander LeClair it has been one of the biggest questions of their year.

Thomas, a cellular and organismal biology major and LeClair, a biology and chemistry major have been studying Lock Haven’s water since August of 2015. Their research examines indicator bacteria in sewage outfall and local recreational waters, specifically bacteria that are resistant to antibiotics.

The study has been examining samples from the Lock Haven Water and Waste Treatment Plant, the Bald Eagle Creek and Mill Hall Fishing Creek.

LeClair pointed out that there are very limited studies like this in the U.S. “Right now, everyone’s looking at hospitals and sewage effluent from hospitals, but no one’s really looking at the local receiving waters that could be potentially a cesspool for these kind of indicator bacteria.”

The research is specifically looking at Coliforms (bacteria similar to E. Coli) and Enterococcus bacteria. In high levels, these bacteria could cause swimmer-associated gastroenteritis, an illness that can cause stomach pain, and, at its worst, diarrhea and dehydration.

People who come in contact with water contaminated by these antibiotic resistant bacteria are also more at risk of developing resistance to antibiotics. They have been testing this resistance in the bacteria using the antibiotic vancomycin.

These bacteria have mutated to become resistant to antibiotics like vancomycin due in part to how humans take antibiotics. People will often misuse antibiotics by taking it for the wrong reasons, or they don’t take antibiotics long enough to kill off the bacteria completely, leaving bacteria that is more resistant to antibiotics.

So far the populations of these antibiotic resistant indicator bacteria have varied. Due to the environmental nature of the study, Thomas and LeClair have encountered some problems with weather affecting population

sizes, which might account for this variation.

“Understanding just how limited information is available in the literature has pushed us out of our comfort zone to seek an array of different ideas,” said Le Clair.

“Sometimes in these novel studies you don’t necessarily end up with a definitive conclusion albeit, more importantly, you gain another step towards your goal. Even though the future is still evolving for this study and I trust we are headed in the right direction.”

Thomas explained that there’s nothing to be panicked about. “I don’t think it’s a glaring concern, I don’t think it’s anything that’s like the next epidemic, but I mean it’s something to keep in the back of your mind.”

Thomas pointed out that students should be more proactive and think more about their lifestyles in regards to their health.

Both Thomas and LeClair would like to thank Professor Joseph P. Calabrese, their independent research study advisor and the entire Biological Science Department for their contributions to their research, and their support.

LeClair stated how he hoped others would continue their research after they graduated. “Obviously due to the studies limited nature in the US, I think it’s exciting and motivating to be able to engage and be part of the pioneers of this novel research and technique.”

PA primaries fast approaching: Students are preparing to vote for the first time Joanna Harlow

Opinion Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu It’s presidential primary season and the deadline to register to vote in the Pennsylvania primary is fast approaching. Students must register before Mon, March 28th in order to vote in the primary on April 26.

Students living on campus can also vote on East Campus in April. Make sure if you are living on campus that you write ‘401 North Fairview Street’ in the address box and include the name of your dorm and room number.

The process is simple and can be done easily online at votespa.com. If you are unsure of your voter status, this can also be easily found at the website.

Students who have never voted before should not be intimidated.

The online registration system is easy, and takes about 15 minutes. You must have your PA driver’s license or the last four digits of your social security number to register. By giving your phone number on the form, you allow registration officers to contact you if there is a problem.

Absentee ballots can also be ordered on the website. These ballots are used when the voter wishes to vote in a constituency but will not be present on voting day, so it is perfect for students who are away from home. Absentee ballots tend to take some time to arrive, so order one as soon as you can.

The student vote has always been an important one, yet turnout has always lagged behind that of other age groups. According to the US Census Bureau, voters between the ages of 18 through 24 have consistently voted at lower rates than all other age groups in every presidential election since 1962. According to NPR, millennials (people born between 1982 and 2000) now outnumber baby boomers. Which means that the student vote could make a significant difference in the outcome of elections.

There are many reasons for low turnout rates among college students. They are away from home, some without transportation. They lack the knowledge about how to register and are confused about whether to register at home or at school. The new online system should alleviate that confusion.

Students should not undervalue their vote. Pennsylvania has more than 400 institutions of higher education. NPR listed Pennsylvania as one of the ten states in which the student vote could sway the election.

“Daredevil” Who needs morals anyway?

Fearful screams pierce the air. It’s time to get to work.

“Daredevil” returned to Netflix with its second season on March 18 and, let me tell you, it’s a good thing it was on a Friday.

As soon as class was over, I silenced my phone, arranged my snacks and got comfy on the couch. The bingeing had begun.

Let me catch you up. Blinded in a tragic childhood accident, Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) found his remaining senses heightened far beyond the norm. He became a lawyer by day and vigilante by night. At the end of the first season, Matt managed to take down kingpin Wilson Fisk as Daredevil and put him away with help from his legal partners Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) and Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll).

With Fisk off the streets, the scum have begun to fill the void he left behind.

Gangs meet in backrooms to finalize their plans. But they aren’t the only ones declaring war. Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) has set his sights on Hell’s Kitchen, and he’s determined to punish those who lurk in the shadows. It becomes a whole thing in the series.

Morality has been a constant theme with Daredevil as a character, but this season takes the time to fully examine it. How can you not talk about right and wrong when discussing a man who openly goes on killing sprees like The Punisher? Whether you agree with his methods or not, it’s hard to deny he gets results.

Watching the characters grapple with how they feel about Castle’s crimes brings the internal struggle to the forefront. Perhaps the most striking scene is when Castle holds Daredevil captive on a roof. They exchange banter instead of fists and discuss their personal ethics. It’s the first time Frank Castle is seen as a person instead of just The Punisher. “We don’t get to pick the things that fix us, Red.” Bernthal is the perfect choice for Castle. He pulls off being cold and calculated during his criminal killing sprees. That was never in question. Not only does he handle the emotional gravity of his character’s situation, but he’s also able to convey it with impressive subtlety. Elodie Yung is also fantastic as the mysterious Elektra, a ghost from Matt’s past.

If you watched last season you know all about the “Daredevil” fight scenes. They manage to be beautiful and brutal at the same time. Don’t worry; the close-quarter fights in shadow-filled alleys are back and better than ever. Not only is the lighting still amazing, but the sound editing is also impeccable. There are some nods to the most memorable scene last season, because how can we forget that? Sometimes doors just make the best weapons.

“Daredevil” is everything a comic fan could ask for. Storylines and characters are true to the source material and wrapped in gritty realism that Zack Snyder would be jealous of. It checks all of the boxes and is definitely worth the binge.

Tonight, Mar. 24 Roxy Movie Theatre! Mister Costulas Media presents “Public Domain” at 9 p.m. You must be 18 years or older to get into this event!

Hosted by comedian Bill Russum, this event will feature fourteen different local bands and musicians. There will also be four featured films played on mute: “Little Shop of Horrors,” “Superman,” “Reefer Madness” and “Popeye The Sailor.”

The event is $5 at the door. The Roxy Movie Theatre is located at 308 East Main Street in Downtown.

Friday, Mar. 25 Roxy Movie Theatre! “Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice” opens in both 2D and 3D at the Roxy Movie Theatre.

Directed by Zack Snyder and starring Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman and Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/ Superman, this movie brings together two of the biggest heroes around.

Batman, fearing that Superman’s actions are left unchecked, takes on the man of steel while the people of the world take sides. With these two distracted, a new threat is created. Along with Wonder Woman, the two heroes must put their differences aside to save Metropolis.

The Roxy Movie Theatre is located at 308 East Main Street in Downtown.

6 p.m.: The Station Gallery! Come to the opening reception for the Regional Juried Photography Exhibit.

True to its name, the exhibit will be all photography.

Mike Eubanks Staff Writer mae7020@lhup.edu At the word poetry, some readers are already thumbing to the sports section, threats of the complicated, inaccessible verse that you only read because you were forced to still ringing in your mind. “Today Means Amen” is not that kind of poetry. Yes, the latest work by Button Poetry co-founder Sierra DeMulder is complex and deep, but her work is also raw, relevant and accessible to contemporary young adults.

DeMulder writes about real life in stark and authentic terms. She channels the everyday fears, hopes and doubts that each of us face as citizens of the modern universe.

Her poetry is emotionally accessible and very relatable, while still remaining well-crafted and aesthetically engaging. She works primarily in free verse, but her poetry is deliberate and tightly controlled.

Some stand out pieces from the collection are “The Origin of the Funeral Hat,” which explores the Martin Luther King Jr. assassination from the perspective of his wife Coretta. “For My Niece Livia, Age 8” is a narrative piece that explores the cultural forces that move us to con-

form as we age. “Progress Report” is a moving piece about a grandfather’s struggle with dementia.

On point and provocative, the book often forces the reader to pause and to take stock of one’s priorities. It faces head-on the absurdities of contemporary life, and is often unflinchingly vulnerable in its approach. From personal introspective to blunt social commentary, Sierra Demulder brings unique perspective to the broad spectrum of human experience.

“Today Means Amen” defies the modern perception that poetry must remain a cryptic pleasure for an isolated group of stodgy academics. She depicts real life in terms that will be accessible to real people. Between her printed works and her involvement in slam poetry, this talented artist is bringing the joy of poetry to an expanded contemporary audience.

In addition to “Today Means Amen,” Sierra Demulder has published several previous books of poetry. She is one of the founders of Button Poetry, a slam poetry group whose work has been popularized online. She is also a two time National Poetry Slam Champion.

8 A&E Things just got a lot more ‘Fuller’ on Netflix: Magic of ‘Full House’ re-kicked with a modern twist Sam Shirk

The magic of “Full House” has been re-kicked with a modern twist and a gender-swapped edge. If you loved “Full House” you’re going to love “Fuller House” because it’s exactly what fans loved before-- heart-filled, cheesy family television with amazingly cute kid characters. A definite ode to fans everywhere, after all, if it’s not broke don’t be rude and fix it!

“Fuller House” follows young D.J. Tanner-Fuller (Candace Cameron Bure) who is now a veterinarian and mother to three sons- life seems to be good for D.J. However, things change when D.J. finds herself widowed after her husband, Tommy Fuller, is killed during his firefighting duties. Feeling frazzled by everything being on her suddenly, D.J. moves back to her childhood San Francisco home and enlists the help of her sister, Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), and her best friend Kimmy (Andrea Barber) to raise her boys.

Netflix’s new original series seems to be doing everything right so far. After the hype surrounding the show, 13 episodes were released on Feb.26 for streaming, and the pilot was one that will definitely bring a tear to your eye. What makes Fuller House so great, if done right, are the character ties, the acting, and the nostalgia factor. It’s hard to successfully pull off a show such as this one because viewers often have a lot of high expectations, so if you change too much then everyone is up in arms and if you change too little then people will feel like they have seen it all before and become bored. A show like this one makes me feel like it needs shout-outs to the original series, it’s those little moments of repetition that pull at our heart strings.

The classic “You got it, dude!” and “How rude!” never get old, in fact we expect to hear them in a show such as this one.

A nice treat which I felt really enhanced that nostalgia feeling and made it all the more perfect was the opening sequence. For starters, it’s the same song - well, almost. “Everywhere You Look” is always heard in someone’s mind when you mention the classic 1980’s sitcom. It’s as iconic as the catchphrases! “Fuller House’s” theme is the same song but covered by Carly Rae Jepsen, and she brought so many feelings as she sang the famous words, “Everywhere you look, everywhere you go/There’s a heart.” I’d be lying if I didn’t admit that I had chills running down my arms as I listened. Also, what makes the opening sequence even better is we see a few snapshots of how our favorite characters have changed over the years. All us Tanner family fans feel like we grew up with those characters, so to see them compared to their younger selves is just brilliant.

I think the opening sequence can be filed under nostalgia-overload; it was amazing.

The acting for “Fuller House” was phenomenal because each character is portrayed perfectly, especially for the large time passage between the two series. It’s almost as if we never really left the family to begin with. Nothing is awkward and no one is different. Jesse is still everyone’s favorite Uncle, Danny is still everyone’s lovable clean-freak, Joey is still-- well Joey, and the girls are absolutely the same, with a few grown-up quirks thrown into the mix.

“Fuller House” is the perfect beginning for another generation of Tanners to make their footprint on modern television, despite there being many other family-centered sitcoms on TV today. This cast is unique and everything that makes “Fuller House” magical is unique to it, “Modern Family” comes close but it’s not the same. I’m looking extremely forward to the second season. It’s time to enjoy all the shenanigans this family will find itself in. “Fuller House is definitely a strong follow-up to the original. It should be very interesting.

LIFESTYLES Student of the Week You don’t know those around you Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu

Name: Theresa Johnson Year: Junior Major: Political Science and Spanish When you’re walking around campus, you see all of the students walking past you but you really don’t know anything about them or what they’ve accomplished. This student of the week is so much more than what she seems when you meet her for the first time. After a brief interview, I was sincerely impressed with all Theresa has done and is doing.

On campus, Theresa is president of the American Association of University Women (AAUW), which is a club focused on female empowerment.

They are hosting Start Smart, a salary negotiation workshop on April 13. Theresa is also a member of Haven Leaders, which is with the Office of Excellence and Inclusion. There they mentor students coming into Lock Haven and help them build leadership techniques. They also help out with Orientation and Accepted Students Day. As if doing all of that isn’t enough, Theresa also works at the writing center and is a Haven Ambassador who gives tours around campus.

To add on to her amazing repertoire, Theresa is also the mother of a two year old girl. Her daughter takes up a lot of her free time but she also finds the time for her personal hobbies like reading and gardening. Theresa is very excited for spring.

Over spring break, Theresa spent her time looking at grad schools in Philadelphia and New York City. There she also went to museums, restaurants and did some shopping like a regular tourist, but she did like the schools as well. Theresa plans on applying for grad schools in the fall for Sociology.

She wants to be a professor of Sociology and work on urban community projects which promote education and good lifestyles in urban areas. Her aim is to keep kids in school, help them with their nutrition and help them stay out of gangs.

Theresa’s favorite class is Dr. Iron’s Civil Rights Movements class and she appreciates Dr. Iron’s interest in African American communities. Theresa also loves her advisors, Dr. Harlowe and Dr. Lopez.

If Theresa had tomorrow off, she would spend her time traveling outside of Lock Haven and eating

at restaurants she’s never been to. I think everyone can appreciate that as an amazing way to spend their time. To go along with her desire to travel outside of Lock Haven, Theresa’s dream vacation would be a road trip, maybe through South America or Africa, but she’d like to travel through those continents somehow. She would also like to explore the Mediterranean or just go to a place she’s never been before.

Even before she became incredibly successful in college, Theresa had the opportunity to go to an international boarding school outside of Baltimore. It was a private college prep school where kids from all over the world came to learn. Today, with a million hypothetical dollars, she would pay off her student loans, buy one of those new tiny houses that are becoming popular on HGTV and go to grad school. Overall, Theresa seems like a hardworking person destined for a bright future and one who always has her stuff together.

Even her friends would describe her as such, but Theresa describes herself as incredibly lazy and says she wouldn’t get anything done without a to-do list.

Theresa is one of those people that you wouldn’t realize has done amazing things, and continues to do those amazing things, if you passed her on the sidewalk. It makes you realize that everyone you pass while walking to class, or even walking around the world in general, has a story to tell. Some stories may be more fantastic than others and some are just at their beginning, but each person has something to say and if we only took the time to listen, we’d see how amazing people can truly be.

Whether you tear up watching cute videos of puppies or like to act tough and pretend you don’t well up every once in awhile, we all cry; it’s one of the things that makes us human. We are the only creatures that shed emotional tears (gorillas and elephants may also do this, but the jury is still out on those cases), so the next time you want to criticize yourself or someone else for crying just remember that it’s only human. Not only is it distinctly human, but it is also healthy for you.

Sometimes we think of crying as something that makes us weak or somehow less than perfect. People are always apologizing for crying when, really, they shouldn’t have to.

Society tells us we are weak for crying or, sometimes, we are constantly told that “crying is for babies” and “real men don’t cry.” It’s all wrong, and if people become “uncomfortable” when they see you cry, that’s their problem, not yours.

Crying is one of the easiest ways to release all of your pent-up emotions and it can even make you feel better. A study done by the University of Florida found that almost 89% of people feel better after crying.

Studies have also suggested that crying stimulates the production of endorphins, which are hormones your body produces that make you feel good. Sometimes you just have to let it out if you want to move forward.

Most importantly, crying helps relieve stress. According to William Frey, the director of the Psychiatry Research Laboratories at the St.

Paul-Ramsey Medical Centre, crying removes chemicals that build up during stress. And removing those chemicals helps prevent the damage that stress can cause to your heart and brain. So with finals week coming up if you feel the need to cry, go for it. You will feel much better in the long run and will be doing your body a favor.

Holding in your tears is actually terrible for you. You may feel big and tough for not crying, but it is detrimental to your wellbeing. Biologist Dr. Jerry Bergman says that suppressing tears can increases stress levels and contribute to diseases aggravated by stress such as high blood pressure, heart problems and peptic ulcers. Nobody wants any of that, so it’s much better for you to just let it out. Not to mention, when you hold your emotions in for too long, you are likely to eventually and unexpectedly explode, which is not good for your relationships.

So what should you do when you see someone crying? First, remember that they aren’t weak and it’s a natural human response to what they are going through. Second, the polite thing to do is to ask the person if they need anything - maybe asking what is wrong could be too personal or they don’t want to talk. However, don’t assume they need a hug, and don’t just walk out on the person because that can make them feel worse like they are bothering you or something. Just be there if the person needs you and be as understanding as possible. And remember, what goes around comes around, so if you are there when someone needs you then maybe they will be there when your roles are reversed.

Dwindling art faculty causes concern Bianca Briones

Guest Writer bmb2478@lhup.edu Lock Haven University has multiple programs, many professors, and even more classes. One of many, the Performing and Visual Arts program is made up of four smaller programs; art, music, theater, and dance.

Being an art major, I have noticed the art program has been understaffed for quite a while. As of 2016, there are 60 students majoring in art and only 4 professors, according to graphic design professor Jason Bronner.

For some students this is a problem that affects their schoolwork. Luckily, the administration has taken notice and has awarded the art program a temporary part time professor specialized for the graphic design concentration. I sat down and spoke with Professor Bronner and a few art majors to hear the students’ thoughts as well as understand it from the other side. It is clear that a number of us feel the same way: another professor would be a tremendous help. “I’m very, very happy. In fact, this is the biggest support shown for graphic design. It’s good help for you guys, and will help me make the program bigger,” says Bronner.

Professor Jason Bronner has been the graphic design professor here at Lock Haven for the past 16 years. He has not seen any direct faculty cuts, but he did see one faculty member retire and not be replaced. Due to the class to professor ratio, art classes are set up to be held every other semester or every third semester. This means classes that are needed are not always available to students.

Professor Bronner is the only professor specializing in graphic design and painting and

he teaches all six of those classes alone.

Each of these classes also holds an advanced 425-level course. This is where Jason feels like another faculty member on board will help. Currently, 425-level and the basic level students are taught at the same time.

This causes the stacking of classes. Students are not given the entire time allotted with the professor, due to the class having to be split up. “I feel like there are many challenges we have to face when stacking classes.

The students don’t have the opportunity to work with the professor as much; they don’t get as much practice. With another faculty member, 425’s will become their own classes and students will produce better projects,” Professor Bronner says.

Senior art major, Chris Jones reflected Bronner’s statements: “We have a lot of students in the art program and just not enough staff.”

Jones seemed to agree on getting another professor, “as long as we get a part time professor that cares as much as the ones we have.

The relationship between the professor and students matter.” Like many art majors, Chris has developed a relationship with some professors. He feels comfortable approaching them and believes “the professors we have care greatly about the program and the students involved in it. They work to the best of their abilities with what they have.”

For someone who is on the other side and has to deal with learning in split classes, he believes another staff member would allow classes to not be so rushed and could make them more valuable.

After speaking with another art major, Corey Betush, I noticed he expressed the same feelings.

Corey told me that he thinks the 425 classes are “super useful. They allow the professors to add some of the depth that is lacking in the basic course and it greatly increases what we learn in a class.” It is safe to say both the program and the professors are well-liked. We just need a way to make it easier for the students to take required courses; a way to allow the professors to go in depth with a class in the way that they prefer.

Although we wish it were full-time, a part-time professor is much appreciated.

This gives the students of the graphic design program a better chance to make more successful work. More time with the professor will be available and there will be no worries about split classes.

Bring ‘Yes Means Yes’ to LHU Meghan Mausteller Staff Writer mlm6713@lhup.edu As we continue to redefine “consent” as a society, it is important that our institutions follow this cultural trend. Lock Haven University needs to take an active stance toward implementing a “Yes Means Yes” policy on our campus.

Over the past ten years, a cry of “yes means yes” has begun to overshadow the “no means no” of a previous generation. ‘Yes means yes,’ or affirmative consent, is defined by California state law as “affirmative, conscious, and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity.” It involves both a physical and emotional understanding between all parties involved and must be mutual and continuous throughout the duration of the sexual act.

LHU currently defines “consent” as the following: “Consensual sexual activity happens when each partner willingly chooses to participate.

Openly communicating about expectations and desires is critical to obtaining consent.

Consent can only be given by a person who has control of his or her mental and physical capabilities.

“Sex without consent is sexual assault. Use of force, intimidation, or coercion is a denial of a person’s right to freely give his/her consent.

Even if someone has agreed to engage sexually, that person has the right to withdraw his/her consent at any time.”

The Title IX pamphlets go on to remind students that they “have the right to say ‘NO!’” While these efforts show an attempt toward affirmative consent, they are highly lacking in any real or definitive answer of what consent truly is or is not.

Other states and universities with ‘yes means yes’ policies choose to elaborate on what instances do not count as consent. For example, California specifies that a “lack of protest or resistance does not mean consent, nor does silence mean consent.”

Lock Haven’s definition neglects to enforce the fact that a person’s refusal of consent does not have to be loud or aggressive, nor does it have to even have to be verbally given. Consent should not be a gray area marred with misunderstanding. Unless everyone involved gives a firm “yes” or positive indication that undeniably demonstrates their willingness to participate in a sexual act, consent has not been given.

A ‘yes means yes’ policy is beneficial because it removes the responsibility of giving a “no” from the victim and transfers the role of asking for a “yes” to the accused. In other words, it’s a policy that works toward ending victim blaming at administrative and legal levels. California even goes as far as insisting that the accused take reasonable steps “in the circumstances known to the accused at the time, to ascertain whether the compliant affirmatively consented.”

In May 2015, Philadelphia Congresswoman Blondell Reynolds Brown met with representatives from Philadelphia universities to discuss a ‘yes means yes’ policy. The hearing included testimonies from Drexel University, the University of Pennsylvania, the University of the Sciences, and the Holy Family University.

While Pennsylvania currently allows decisions on affirmative consent policies to be adopted on a city-by-city basis, it is important to recognize that Philadelphia, the home of 19 four-year colleges and universities, as well as 10 two-year institutions and technical schools, and five graduate institutions, has taken the incentive to begin discussing ‘yes means yes.’

Lock Haven is a university, but rape and sexual assaults still happen here. It is important for LHU to adopt policies that ensure the victim is supported if the need should ever arise.

Softball extends win streak to nine games Bret Pallotto

Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Conference games have yet to begin for the Lock Haven University softball team and head coach Kelly Shannon’s team already has more wins in 2016 than they did in 2015.

The team will enter Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play with a nine game winning streak that dates back to March 9.

Freshman Bekah Slattery and junior Rachel Mouillesseaux have been fantastic for the Bald Eagles during the winning streak. Over the course of the season, Slattery has tossed a PSAChigh 81 innings and Mouillesseaux is right behind her at 75.1 innings pitched. They also sit one-two in terms of wins with Slattery recording nine and Mouillesseaux with eight of her own. Their names can also be found at the top of the strikeout leaderboard as Slattery is first with 69 punchouts and Mouillesseaux is fourth with 52.

It should be no surprise that the winning streak has coincided with dominating performances from the duo. Over this stretch, Slattery

has pitched to the tune of a 1.21 ERA in 37.1 innings while Mouillesseaux has a 1.90 ERA in 23.2 innings.

Slattery, who was named Louisville Slugger/ National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II National Pitcher of the Week earlier this season, had a stretch of 29.1 innings where she allowed just one run en route to three straight complete-game shutouts.

“Last week was a successful one for me and the team. I credit my team for having my back every game and wanting to win as bad as badly as I do,” said Slattery after winning the award. “We have worked hard this offseason to improve our team in all areas and I believe we have the tools to be successful this season.”

The lefty from Daniel Boone High School was named the Player of the Year by the Pennsylvania High School Softball Coaches Association and has lived up to the billing early in her Lock Haven career.

The pitching performances from Slattery and Mouillesseaux would be moot if it were not for the offense that is lead by a trio of juniors in McKenna Garlock, Jodi Weaknecht and Michelle Holweger.

These three have combined for 49 of the team’s 92 RBI’s, which is 53 percent of the production.

Weaknecht, who hit three home runs in 123 at-bats last season, has four home runs in her first 75 at-bats this season.

Garlock, an All-PSAC performer last year, currently has a batting average, slugging percentage and on-base percentage that is higher than last year. She already has/is on pace, to surpass her totals in runs, RBIs, stolen bases, walks and has a lower strikeout rate.

The team will open PSAC play today, March 24 at Indiana (Pa.) before returning home to play Mansfield the following day at 1:00p.m. and 3:00p.m.

Lacrosse off to speedy start Jayson Moyer

Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University women’s lacrosse team has gotten off to a flying start in the 2016 season, winning each of their first seven games.

Lock Haven won all but one game last season, finishing 20-1 but falling in the national championship to Adelphi 5-4 in overtime.

The Bald Eagles opened up the regular season with a 14-4 win over Shepherd University on March 5. The team then took on a week-long trip to Colorado in which they won all three games.

Lock Haven opened up the Colorado slate with a 19-9 win over Colorado State - Pueblo in which junior Shannon Bissnette had eight points (three goals, five assists), and sophomore Hayley Kilian had seven points with two goals and five assists. Junior Rachel Engler tacked on five goals.

The Eagles followed up the rout of Colorado State - Pueblo with a 14-6 victory over Fort Lewis in Denver behind five goals from Engler, seven assists from Bissnette and four points from Kilian. Senior Jenna Dingler also scored three goals for Lock Haven in the win over Fort Lewis.

To close out the Colorado trip, the Bald Eagles eked out a 9-8 win over Regis University in Denver. Sophomore Dana Laulis scored three goals in the win, and sophomore Ashley Gochenaur scored twice for Lock Haven.

Lock Haven returned home to open up PSAC play with a 10-9 win at Kutztown on March 17. Engler scored four goals for Lock Haven, while Gochenaur and senior Hope Thomas each scored two. Bissnette had a goal and three assists for the Eagles, and Kilian led Lock Haven with four assists.

In another close game, Lock Haven won their PSAC home opener 9-8 over Seton Hill on Saturday afternoon at Charlotte Smith Field.

Laulis scored three goals and dished out two assists, Thomas and sophomore Alex O’Herrick each added a goal and Bissnette had three assists for Lock Haven.

Most importantly, however, was goalie Hannah Houde’s save with a second remaining in the game to preserve the win for Lock Haven.

The Eagles closed out game No. 7 on the season with an 18-7 rout of Shippensburg on Wednesday. Kilian had eight points (two goals, six assists) for Lock Haven, Engler scored five goals, and Gochenaur and Laulis combined for seven goals.

Lock Haven will travel to Edinboro at 4p.m. on Friday.

LHU took game one by a 2-1 score then won game two with a 9-0 shutout.

LHU won game two with a shutout thanks to outstanding pitching performances by Matt Lahn, Jacob Belinda, Zach Manuppelli and Brett Morrison. Belinda had five strikeouts in two innings to credit him with the win.

Evan McFarland went 3-for-3 in game two.

Sam Kysor was perfect in two at-bats with a triple and two RBIs. Wake Forest transfer Jimmy Webb went 1-for-2 with two RBIs. The team then hosted the Golden Eagles of Clarion (3-12) on Tuesday. Lock Haven took game one by a 2-1 score and won game two by a 5-2 score. Pitcher Brett Morrison got his first win against Clarion in game one and Tom Cockill earned his first win of the season in game two.

Sam Kysor drove in the only two runs in the game in the bottom of the second to give the Bald Eagles the win in game one. Tyson Petersheim scored three runs in game two.

Lock Haven is currently on a seven-game winning streak.

Sprenkle, Neff at Madison Square Garden Alex Wahl

Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu It truly takes hard work, dedication and pride to be the best. Two Lock Haven University wrestlers proved that last weekend at the NCAA Division-I Wrestling Championships at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Redshirt-senior Dan Neff, who is a returning All-American at 149 pounds from last year, lost his first two matches since returning to 149 back in December. Neff was at 141 pounds to start the season. After three undefeated months, No. 15 Neff got pinned by Bucknell’s Victor Lopez and lost by decision to Eastern Michigan’s Nick Barber.

I wasn’t expected to do much. I took pressure off myself because of my conditioning and the work that I put in beforehand.”

Both Neff and Sprenkle offered some advice to the wrestlers who are on or coming into the wrestling program. “Don’t wait to accomplish your dreams,” said Neff. “It’s never too early.”

Sprenkle also had the same advice. “Don’t wait until the last minute because your senior year will be gone before you know it,” said Sprenkle.

Neff plans to attend graduate school and become a graduate assistant coach. Sprenkle plans to work with a real estate agency after graduation.

Head coach Scott Moore couldn’t be more proud of his Bald Eagle’s efforts. “I couldn’t be happier about our wrestlers accomplishments,” said Moore. “Neff going undefeated for three months and winning the Eastern Wrestling League title is enough for me. I was excited about how those guys competed.”
