Tuition freeze still far off: Legislators propose stop-gap Joanna Harlow Reporter ejh1498@lhup.edu In early 2015, the PASSHE Board of Governors agreed to freeze the tuition of state universities as long as Gov. Wolf’s $45.3 million budget was passed. Despite the past 11 weeks of talks and meetings, the 2015 budget has yet to be passed, and state university students will see an increase in their tuitions.

The PASSHE Board of Governors has reserved the right to increase tuition if the budget is not passed. With no sign of an agreement between Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf and the Republican legislators in sight, tuition will begin to rise. The board of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education voted Thursday to raise in-state tuition by $240 to $7,060 for the two-semester 2015-16 school year. According to their press release, they need to do this in order to offset the deficits the schools face.

“Even with the modest tuition increase we approved today, the universities still would need to make significant budget cuts without any increased funding from the state again next year,” Board of Governors Chairman, Guido M. Pichini said in a statement to the Pittsburgh PostGazette.

In 2011, Gov. Tom Corbett’s State budget included a significant funding cut to the PASSHE System.

Combined, the fourteen universities have made more than 270 million dollars in budget cuts. On June 30, 2011, PASSHE’s Board of Governors approved a 436 million dollar tuition increase (7.5 percent) for 2011-12. Since the 2011 cut, The PASSHE System has placed over 100 academic programs in moratorium and many more have been discontinued altogether. Tuition has also increased by nearly 17 percent since 2011, and fees by 18 percent.

Starting this week, legislative leaders say they will attempt to pass a stop-gap budget to fund state government for several months while negotiations continue.

Gov. Wolf told a Pittsburgh radio station on Tuesday that he’d only sign a stop-gap plan if he has a general budget agreement with the GOP. He said he wouldn’t consider a stop-gap as an alternative to the budget; and would only consider a “reasonable” bill after he sees what the GOP has thrown into it.

With the budget in the balance, the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties, who have fought in the past to secure an adequate state budget, has begun a campaign to raise budget-awareness in the university system.

Students at Lock Haven may have received postcards reading “Why Education Matters to Me” from APSCUF representative staff. Students are asked to write why they value their PASSHE education. The cards are then

mailed to local lawmakers Republican Senator Joe Scarnati and Democratic Representative Mike Hanna.

APSCUF’s goal is to get students involved in understanding what is happening in Harrisburg and how it influences their lives. Faculty-liaison, Erin Kennedy, associate professor of psychology reaches out to student groups to educate them about APSCUF. She has a twitter account where students can follow her.

APSCUF also has voter registration drives Guido M. Pichini, Board of regularly.

Governors Chaiman When asked about whether the organization has had success with this strategy, Tracey Cummings, professor of English said: “We know that the legislators are more interested in hearing from students than from us.”

According to Lock Haven’s APSCUF release, for every state dollar invested in the University, $7.45 is returned back to the Commonwealth’s economy.

The release also makes an argument for the schools’ local value. It reminds students and faculty that Lock Haven University is the third largest employer in Clinton County and that thousands of the university’s alumni reside in the four counties surrounding the school.

Timely Warning: Sexual assault on campus still under investigation Kate Hibbard Staff Writer khibbard@lhup.edu Students, faculty and staff may remember receiving a timely warning from public safety on Aug. 22 that contained a chilling message: someone had been sexually assaulted in her dorm room and the assailant’s whereabouts were unknown.

Three days later, public safety issued a calming update that stated that the suspect had been found and “there is no longer a threat to the university community.”

According to Paul Altieri, director of public safety, the investigation is on-going and police are still gathering evidence. Because of that, he couldn’t say what exactly lead police to the suspect.

“I really can’t talk about police procedures too much...how we find people,” Altieri said. We follow the leads people give us, look at video surveillance.”

Once found, the suspect was issued a no-trespass letter, meaning he has not been allowed anywhere on the university’s campus throughout the investigation, but could not yet be arrested.

Before an arrest can be made, police have to present enough evidence to the district attorney to get the go-ahead to produce an arrest warrant, and

then have it signed by the county judge to make it legitimate.

If the DA denies that the evidence offers proof beyond a reasonable doubt, then police must begin the search again to find more, stronger evidence.

Chief Altieri can’t release the type of evidence needed for an arrest to be made and for good reason.

“It hinders our investigation,” Altieri explained. “If I told a criminal what type of evidence I was looking for, they might get rid of it.”

Likewise, Altieri cannot share any information or updates on the person who reported the assault.

According to Altieri, if the alleged assailant is officially arrested and the case goes to court, then more information will be made public.

Any further timely warnings issued, however, will no longer deal with this case. Timely warnings are issued in accordance with the Clery Act and are based on factors such as the nature of a crime, any continuing danger to the campus community and the possible risk of compromising law efforts.

They are not to be confused with emergency warnings, which are issued -usually via the phone system - in times of severe weather, gas leaks or other emergencies.

Students, faculty and staff are strongly encouraged to report any crimes or potential dangers to public safety and may do so by calling 570-484-2278.

Celebrating the country’s Constitution on campus Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu On September 17, 1787 at the Philadelphia convention, the Constitution of the United States was signed by our founding fathers. 228 years later, we still celebrate the iconic signing.

Back in 2004, Senator Robert Byrd passed a bill assigning September 17 as the day for all citizens of America to recognize the signing of the Constitution. He believed that all Americans should understand the rights we are given and that are outlined in the Constitution.

“To preserve the Constitution, we must be willing to make it work, to make it an active part of our lives.” Said Senator Byrd on Constitution Day in 2006. “Each generation is charged with protecting and defending the Constitution at home and abroad, in peace and in war.”

In his 2004 federal spending bill clause, it mandates that all schools that receive federal funds should teach about

the constitution.

To celebrate Constitution Day on campus, the fourth annual Constitution Day Poster event will be held from 9 - 3 p.m. in the PUB Multipurpose Room.

Students from the Introduction to Public Administration course have created posters about the concepts of the Constitution.

This event is sponsored by the Political Science program in the Department of History, Political Science, International Studies and Foreign Languages with the support of several departments on campus.

Students can go to the event anytime during the day to view to posters and pick up a free pocket U.S. Constitution.

The three words that begin the Constitution, “We the People”, structure our government, rights and freedoms that we were given over 200 years ago. Be sure to visit the PUB to learn more about the Constitution.

Nick is going retro with ‘The Splat’ Sam Shirk A&E Editor sxs1090@lhup.edu

Have you heard any rumors about reboots for classic Nickelodeon shows? Well... that’s still not true but at 90s fest on September 12th in Brooklyn, New York, there was an announcement about a new television block featuring classic Nick shows. Nickelodeon is calling this retro block “The Splat.”

A site for the block has been launched but it’s very empty at the current moment and the selected programs haven’t been listed yet.

Only a teaser video was released on The Splat’s YouTube channel recently and it featured clips from “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “Catdog,” “Rocket Power,” Hey Arnold!”and many more. This gives viewers some idea of what they will be treated to and, though there isn’t

much information yet, viewers can subscribe to the various social media sites for any future information.

It’s exciting that Nickelodeon is doing this because to me, as a 90s kid, I just haven’t felt that spark surrounding Nick in a long time.

So many of the new shows lack what made me fall in love with Nick in the first place. There’s hardly any NickToons anymore, not enough slime and their live action shows are all too similar from my liking. I feel like Nick has lost its unique edge, like various other channels I used to love growing up.

Hearing that The Splat is its own block rather than a rebooting of these classic cartoons has made me feel more excited. I’m not sure a reboot of any of the shows I grew up on would be the same.

“Rugrats” is a perfect example of a reboot that couldn’t get off the ground. It is something not easily recreated. I guess it COULD be redone, but at what costs? Would the story be the same?

Would the characters? I can’t help but think it wouldn’t because some of the shows were very time-period centered. Things were much different in the 90s than they are now.

At any rate, I’m looking forward to the release of this 90s block and I think many others will be too. Good news though: viewers aren’t going to be waiting too much longer because Entertainment Weekly revealed that Nick’s new block will be premiering in October. Hopefully more information will be received before then.

If you ever talk to me about television I will inevitably end up talking about today’s cartoons, and my belief that we are in a new age of cartoons. Many kid shows today are critically amazing, they not only reach out to children but to adults as well. They cover complex issues, contain subtle adult humor and are genuinely artistic looking.

Shows like “Legend of Korra” deal with intense drama and heavy political issues like terrorism and fascism. Disney’s “Gravity Falls” is layered with complex puzzles for the audience to decode and rife with adult references to stuff like “Legend of Zelda”, “Twin Peaks” and horror movies. “Adventure Time” contains massive world-building elements and breaks down topics like dementia and institutional oppression.

And now Cartoon Network’s miniseries “Over the Garden Wall” has joined the ranks of these critically acclaimed cartoons that even adults will love and appreciate.

“Over the Garden Wall” is about two boys Wirt (played by Elijah Wood) and Greg (played

by Collin Dean), who are trying find their way home when they end up lost in a weird forest called the Unknown. They meet strange

characters such as an old woodsman (played by Christopher Lloyd) and a sassy talking bluebird named Beatrice (played by Melanie Lynsky).

The plot and setting of the show are that of a fairy tale in it’s truest form: whimsical and grim. This show is creepy and dark, and yet balances this with quirky humor and Greg’s humorous innocence. It is never too dark, or too sweet and corny, instead you are treated to serious piece of art with serious themes and underlying plot. The surprise twist towards the end of the season will blow you away, it marvelously ties everything together and reveals how everything makes sense.

The show has won both an Emmy and a Rueben Award for it’s animation, and let me tell you it is deserving of those awards.

The animation style is reminiscent of old 20’s cartoons, with specific episodes referencing such shows as “Betty Boop” and Disney’s old “Alice Comedies”. The background images are especially beautiful, resembling old paintings that create an eerie environment of early Americana and folklore. The combining art styles is something that is light and fanciful, but also incredibly artistic.

The entire season is now out on DVD and is also available on Hulu, Amazon, and Cartoon Network’s website. This miniseries is a perfect treat for the upcoming fall season, and an impressive cinematic addition to anyone’s film library.

College students love movies; it’s a great break from studying when one is desperately needed. Here’s what’s coming out this weekend in the Roxy.

“Inside Out” Pixar’s summer hit, this movie will only be in the Roxy for this upcoming weekend only. Directed by Pete Doctor and Ronald Del Carmen, this animated adventure follows a young girl named Riley after she moves from the Midwest to the big city of San Francisco. Her personified emotions, Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness, conflict on how to navigate her new life. This movie stars the vocal talents of Amy Piehler, Bill Hader and Lewis Black.

“Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials” Directed by Wes Ball and based off of the novel written by James Dashner, this sequel to “Maze Runner” rejoins the Gladers as they face a new set of challenges out of the maze and on the open roads of the ruins of a city. They will face many obstacles as they try to survive this new environment. This movie stars Dylan O’Brien, Kaya Scodelario and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

“The Man From U.N.C.L.E” Having hit other theaters last month, this action/ comedy is coming to the Roxy this Friday. Directed by Guy Ritchie, this movie is set in the 1960s and follows CIA agent, Napoleon Solo, and, KGB operative, Illya

“The Visit” Having hit theaters and the Roxy this past week, “The Visit” will continue to play through the weekend into next week. Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, this horror follows a two young kids as they visit their grandparents, and things go very wrong. This movie stars Olivia DeJong and Ed Oxenbould.

American Ultra, the new Max Landis and Nima Nourizadah film, stars Jessie Eisenberg as a small-town stoner, Mike,who’s life revolves around his girlfriend, Phoebe (Kristen Stewart). The movie plays as a sort of provincial Bourne Identity.

The flavor of the American South is infused into the West Virginia setting where the two live in a flawed dream-home making just enough in dead-end jobs. Mike is not just metaphorically stuck in a small town; he has a panic attack when he tries to get on the plane to Hawaii, where he plans to propose to Phoebe.

Mike is blissfully unaware that he is in fact, a brainwashed, CIA super-soldier, programmed to be switched on at the will of the American government. The action begins when CIA agent, Victoria Lasseter, played by Connie Britton, goes rogue, and in an attempt to save

her super-creation from the tyranny of the CIA, activates Mike’s powers.

Mike and Phoebe must face a fairly obvious list of obstacles, including the expected grocery store shoot out and an awkwardly diplomatic Topher Grace who plays an ambitious CIA agent, Adrian Yates, hell-bent on killing Mike to secure his spot at the agency. There is also a battalion of disturbed former inmates, who were driven mad by the experiment that made them into CIA killing machines, who function as Yates’ goons.

The movie’s aesthetic teeters between “True Blood” and “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World” and it’s best quality is the believable and heartfelt romance between Eisenberg and Stewart. With surprisingly emotional moments with the enemy characters, and an ending which asks the audience to determine the moral landscape, the movie lacks a real message, even one as simple as “good-guy, bad-guy.” Although it fails to give the viewer a cohesive worldview, the idea of a lasting, flawed romance provides enough solid ground for an enjoyable date movie.

Neil Patrick Harris brings the ‘Best Time Ever’ to NBC Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu NBC’s newest show, “Best Time Ever” definitely gives everybody something to smile about.

“Best Time Ever,” hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, started with a bang. The show’s pilot was live from New York City.

The show kicked off with a game called “Best Days of Your Life”.

Harris introduced a random couple that recently got married. Because of the special occasion, Harris gave them a special honeymoon vacation to Antigua.

The next game was a live singalong. In this game, Harris randomly selected three people from across the country that are watching the show at home. Every time that the contestants get a lyric right, they win $1,000.

Afterwards, the show kicked off a segment called “Neil vs.” In this contest, Harris challenged, special guest, Reese Witherspoon to a race.

Both Harris and Witherspoon had to run to the top of a skyscraper and zip-line down to the bottom of the building. Matt Iceman, announcer for American Ninja Warrior, was the special announcer for the race. In the end, it was Harris with the victory. Carson Daily, host of The Voice, was also invited to the show as a special surprise.

The show continued with a game known as “Get Lucky”.

In this game, Harris gave the audience members a chance to win a Jeep Wrangler, a trip to Sedona and $25,000. Harris gave the audience members questions about news from the past week. If the he contestants answered seven questions correctly, they could then chose seven of 16 prize cards. As a result, one contestant won all three major prizes plus four smaller prizes.

The show ended with a spectacular dance scene with Harris mixing drinks in the air and dancing on a pogo stick with all the special guests that were invited to the show.

“Best Time Ever” will air live at New York City every Tuesday at 10:00 p.m. on NBC. Everyone is invited to watch with everyone across the country having a chance to win some cash prizes.

Where in the World: Guanajuato, Mexico Raymond Stellhorn Columnist Rjs2091@lhup.edu This past Wednesday September 16th was Independence Day in Mexico; this week we visit a very cultural state in Central Mexico. Guanajuato is one of thirty-one states that make up the Estados Unidos Meixcanos (Officially known as “Mexican United States”). Its capital city also by the same name, Guanajuato, is located about four hours northwest of Mexico City.

Guanajuato, Guanajuato is a vibrant colorful place, flamboyant in culture and tradition. Along the winding, hilly, cobblestone streets, you will find many vendors selling all types of souvenirs and cuisine. This food is not what you see at Taco Bell. Some of the most popular street foods are gorditas, enamorados, chicharones, elotes, churros and many more. While strolling along, a parade may come by with people dressed in traditional Aztec attire celebrating Mexican history. Mariachi bands can also be found entertaining in the plaza at the center of the city across from the Teatro

Juárez. Narrow alleys can be found all over the historic center of Guanajuato City, the most famous one called Callejon de Beso (Alley of the Kiss). It is so narrow that two lovers many years ago were able to kiss each other in balconies across the alley from each other.

In the Eastern part of the state is the tranquil town of San Miguel de Allende.

Common in all Mexican towns and cities are their beautiful churches but San Miguel has one of the most beautiful in all of the country. It is a quiet town where many people from other countries move to retire.

According to the 2010 Mexican census, about 5.5 million people live in the entire state and over a million of them living in the largest city of the state, León. Known for its leather industry, manufacturing and selling of footwear, León is where very fashionable shoes can be purchased for a fifth of the price they would be in the United States of America.

The state of Guanajuato is a friendly historic cultural center in the heart of Mexico, take a break from visiting Cancun and embrace this stunning region.

We often say that we are feeling blue when we are sad. This is nothing new as people often use colors to describe moods and feelings. We associate happy feelings with bright colors like yellow and orange, and, when sad or depressed, we often think of blue or grey. There is a strange sort of irony in this description though, as a study published in Psychological Science details we actually lose the ability to distinguish blue as we become sad or depressed.

Two studies were used to determine whether our color associations with mood had any legitimate credence in how we actually perceived them.

It turns out that our ability to perceive both blue and yellow is greatly diminished when we are sad. The other finding was that a happy or cheerful mood did not enhance our color perception though. It seems to be a strange finding at first, why would sadness decreased color perception, like blue, but other emotions not increase our awareness of them?

Christopher Thorstenson of the University of Rochester believes that the perception of blue could be linked to dopamine production. Dopamine is one of the body’s reward chemicals and drops off when we become sad or depressed. It turns out that the chemical is also important in signaling color reception in the retina of the eye. There is no reliable evidence as of yet that the drop in dopamine is the reason we fail to perceive blue when sad but it is something Thorstenson is currently researching.

Stress less when a mess gets the best of you Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor Act6730@lhup.edu We all know the semester starts out nice and easy but the second October hits, it feels like the world is ending. But we don’t want students to develop high blood pressure prematurely so remember that when things get too overwhelming, stop, take a breath and do some of these simple things to keep yourself from crumbling under the pressure this semester.

1. Buy a coloring book.

Coloring is a simple and relaxing way to empty your mind and go back to a time when the hardest thing in life was coloring inside the lines. Coloring has actually been proven to distress students, so color away! For those of you that can’t handle buying a Winnie the Pooh coloring book because someone might see you, there are adult coloring books out there today.

The designs are complex and force you to focus even more. What better way to distress than

to become completely focused on coloring and designs.

2. Download the Colorfy app.

If you don’t want to buy a coloring book and crayons, download this app. It’s on-the-go destress coloring. There are a lot of coloring pages and designs you can choose from and color in at your leisure.

3. Have a movie at the ready.

When you can’t look at another flashcard or do another problem, put it all down. Your brain is fried and you need to step back for a little while. Come back to it when you aren’t about to cry. Watch a movie with popcorn and friends.

Maybe a comedy? Maybe you need to watch a horror film and pretend it’s your homework being brutally murdered. Whatever you need.

Some of you may need a Disney movie and singa-longs so you can revert back to being a child for a little while.

4. Go for a walk or run.

For those of you that are more proactive, you may need to get out of the room for a while.

Don’t look at the homework, don’t smell the homework and don’t be near the homework. Get some fresh air and clear your brain. Let it take a break and let your legs get some blood back in them after sitting for so long.

5. Read a book.

One that doesn’t have anything to with school. Read about dragons or magic. Anything that isn’t Shakespearian literature, research methods of psychology or something equally as awful.

6. Take a nap.

We all do this. But when you’re pushing yourself to do all of the homework and do all of the studying, cramming it all in, stop. You can’t handle it. Take a break. Let your mind have a break. When you get to that point it’s not procrastination to take a nap. You actually need it and your brain needs to shut up for a while.

Keep these in mind and, hopefully when you can’t breathe, these will help you keep your head on your shoulders and your tears in your eyes.

Alumni Corner: Coaching goal achieved Joel Blesh Alumni Contributor Jnb5025@lhup.edu When it comes to Lock Haven University, I’m all in. I received my Bachelor’s from LHU in Sports Administration in 2009, and completed my Master’s at The Haven in May of 2015. The Sport Administration program truly prepared me for the world outside of this beautiful part of Central Pennsylvania and I was ready to achieve my goals of becoming a college swim coach when I graduated. I was lucky enough to achieve my dreams and in November of 2012 I became the Head Coach of Women’s Swimming here at LHU. I get the opportunity every day to be around an incredible group of women that I feel represent everything that a true student athlete should be. They are hardworking, determined and dig deep in adversity. I’m excited knowing that after their time here, they will be teachers, physician assistants, doctors, therapists, writers and truly anything they put their mind to when they leave. It fills me with pride knowing that they will go out and do amazing things after growing here at LHU, just like I had the opportunity to do.

Study Abroad Stories: Spain Last year, I studied abroad for approximately five months at my university in Glasgow, Scotland but I was fortunate enough to travel to seven other countries during my time in Europe. It would take at least five issues of the Eagle Eye to share all my stories from abroad but for now I will just share one story from when I was staying in Madrid, Spain during my Winter Holiday break.

While in Madrid, I visited many places such as Museo Prado, Palacio Real, Parque del Retiro, Plaza de Colón, Gran Vía, Sol, Plaza Mayor, Plaza de Torros, Templo de Debod, Estadio Vicente Calderón and more.

But the one I want to share with you,

is my visit to Estadio San Bernabéu.

Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, the home of Real Madrid Club de Futbol, hosts tours through the stadium and the museum. Being there was unreal.

Soccer is my passion and Real Madrid are not just the most wealthy soccer club in the world but most wealthy sports franchise on Earth. This is no

ordinary club and no ordinary stadium, this is the coliseum of soccer, a theatre of legends, where Los Galácticos (world-famous expensive players purchased by Real Madrid) entertain the Madridistas (Real Madrid fans).

Inside I was first able to view the stadium from the top level then make my way down to see the dressing rooms, dugouts, media center and museum where all the trophies are housed and stories of legends are shared. The amount of trophies was astonishing; it was like being in a gold mine. Looking back now, being able to say I walked the same steps onto the field that the likes of David Beckham, Cristiano Ronaldo and so many other Galácticos have walked, is something I will cherish forever.

Yet another school shooting has occurred, this time by a professor in Mississippi. A Delta State University professor, Shannon Lamb, shot and killed the woman he lived with as well as a fellow professor. There was no motive, at least not yet, other than a possible love triangle. This of course brings up the topic that we all fight the worst over—should we ban firearms? I’ll give my piece on the topic and then throw it into a river, never to speak of it again.

There are two sides of every argument—yes to banning firearms or no to keeping them legal. Both have good points that seem reasonable enough, at least for now until the future changes when one argument outweighs the other. We’ll start with why keeping firearms legal might be a good thing.

Firearms have been a tradition that America likes to sport around the most, namely hunting. I myself used to hunt with my dad, getting up early in the cold months to sit in a tree stand for hours watching the snow fall. It was all rather dull for a while, other than freezing my butt off and watching

even the slightest movement between trees.

A lot of times we saw squirrels, sometimes it was a doe if they were in season. Then, you see the shadows moving and all of a sudden you see those horn racks, a sight for a kid. As I aimed for the heart of the deer, I cleared my mind of all distractions and noises. I fired, and the deer jolted into the woods.

We followed after him and luckily he did not go very far, it was a clean shot to the heart and he didn’t suffer. He was lying there in the snow, some blood trickled from his mouth and nose but very little.

As I gazed upon him, there was a realization that I had just killed something for the first time and he was never wasted. I took this as a life lesson—killing should never be wasteful. Firearms for the hunting man is something that I believe should be preserved, however the kind of firearm takes up issue.

Firearms may be a tradition, but that is not a tradition of automatic weaponry or side arms that are used to kill other human beings. A huntsman’s rifle provides food for a family and preserves a man’s life, whereas an automatic weapon takes a man’s life.

There is no reason for any civilian to own a weapon of war; concealed handguns, however,

are more difficult. Concealed handguns provide protection just like any other concealed weaponry, all with a license of course, but they emit a presence of paranoia. Everyone knows that when someone buys a handgun for the sole purpose of protecting himself or herself, they do not fully trust anyone.

When someone actually sees that concealed weapon, they will feel threatened. What do people do when they feel threatened? They buy a firearm and do exactly the same thing. If everyone is walking around with a firearm, perhaps we should send our children to school with firearms because all the other kids might have them. It’s a cycle of destruction, an argument that I feel can be appeasing.

Personally, I do not feel any laws will be changed nor any gun laws more harshly regulated, as there are far too many “ifs” and “buts” in the process. Pennsylvania already has a concealed weapon law that has proved to be non-lethal, or at least it has not yet been tested.

Until something very ground breaking shakes every American culturally and/or personally, gun laws will not change. Who’s to say if that really will determine our future though. No one really knows the future. Maybe someday we’ll need the weaponry; maybe someday we won’t.

There is something missing from the Lock Haven campus, something that we the students were told would enhance the overall appeal of the school. What could I be referring to? How about the green space that has been under construction since the end of the last school year? I understand it is difficult to quickly deconstruct a building the size of the old Russell Hall and then set out the lovely green area we were informed would replace the former Hall. Yet, here it is, the next year and there appears to be more concrete than green.

Let’s talk about that concrete. Everyday it seems that there is more sidewalk poured and less green space that we students have been eagerly awaiting. There is more sidewalk space now than there was before Russell came down. At least before the construction there was a large enough lawn for the students to play Frisbee or simply sit around and relax on a nice day. Now there is what

looks to be large tracts of cement crossing where the lawn once was. Of course, the reconstruction is not finished so it is a bit premature to guess the result of the finished product.

Moving on from the excessive concrete and what appears to be an increasingly large lack of green space, what about those hideous, fairground, restroom-style buildings littering the front lawn of the LHU campus? I know I am not the only one thinking this. Numerous times over the past few weeks I have passing students wondering why the administration is building bathrooms on what we were told would be a green space with open air buildings.

If this is what administration thinks we want to sit in to enjoy what little lawn is getting replaced, they are wrong. There is the chance that these buildings will look less like restrooms as the construction nears its end, but as of right now, it’s all seeming rather disappointing. In the meantime, all we can do is hope we get what we were promised.

Eagles fans, take a breath

Monday night season openers are the worst.

The Eagles-Falcons game on Monday felt like the game that would never come.

You go through three weeks of the preseason in which the starting quarterback played four series, you see some of the defense, and then you have to watch a fourth preseason game with two quarterbacks who didn’t even make the team.

Then, you have to wait over a week, spend an entire Sunday watching other teams, just to get to Monday.

This city has been longing for football.

Philadelphia has three other franchises who can’t even win. We need a winner.

So 260 days and change since the Eagles last played a meaningful football game, their week one Monday night opener came and went with a 2624 loss to the Falcons. And following their season opening loss, I used three words that I used all too much last season: very, very disappointed.

Not angry. Not mad. Disappointed.

The reason why I was disappointed was for the same reason I used the same three words after the Eagles lost three straight in December last year to Seattle, Dallas, and Washington, eliminating them from playoff contention: they were simply outcoached.

They were not prepared. They were outexecuted. They played the worst first half a team could have played -- a first half in which their play brought back many horror stories to older Eagles fans, including my dad, to the last season of the Ray Rhodes’ era in Philly -- and yet, they were still in a position to win the football game in the second half.

If I were given the key to the Eagles’ kingdom, I would change the E-A-G-L-E-S chant to R-E-L-A-X for the first few days that followed Monday night’s loss. That’s exactly what all of the Eagles fans out there who are losing their minds need to do: take a deep breath, and move onto Sunday at home against the Cowboys.

There is no beating around the bush, the first half was atrocious. The offensive line got zero protection on Bradford, who looked like a firsthalf 2014 Nick Foles with how much he got beat up and knocked down. The defense was on their heels for the entire first half, minus an exceptional

one-handed interception in the end zone by Kiko Alonso.

However, what irritated me the most was how Chip Kelly abandoned the run so quickly in the first half. It was almost Andy Reid-esque. At one point in the first half, the Eagles had a pass:run ratio of 24:5. That’s not going to get the job done.

But the first half was the first half, and the second half was the team we had all hoped to see after the preseason. Moving the ball efficiently, quickly, and sharply. The offensive line getting protection, allowing Bradford to release the ball quickly and find open receivers. The Eagles offense in the second half, especially the entire third quarter, was almost machine-like.

That is why I am of the mindset that the second half Eagles from Monday night are the Eagles we will become accustomed to seeing this season.

The day-after-the-loss-effect was awful for me on Tuesday. The day-after-the-day-after on Wednesday was almost just as bad. But I do know the Eagles will be fine and will be soaring high again -- and that all starts this Sunday.

Monday night openers are the worst. The best part, though, is that we don’t have to wait a full week to watch the Eagles play again.

Volleyball sweeps Angelina Miele Memorial Tournament Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu When the Lock Haven University volleyball team defeated Shepherd 3-0 (25-14, 25-11 & 25-23), they capped a perfect 4-0 weekend at the inaugural Angelina Miele Memorial Tournament.

Over the four match span, the team only dropped one set. Dan Krieger’s team opened the tournament with a convincing 3-0 (25-21, 27-25 & 25-22) victory over Wayne State. Their second and final match on Friday was against Salem International who they defeated 3-0 (25-10, 25-16 & 25-17).

On Saturday, the Pioneers of Long Island University Post were the next team on LHU’s schedule. They were able to take the second set, but ultimately fell to the Bald Eagles 3-1 (25-23, 28-30, 25-15, 25-17). Kreiger saw four of his players reach double-digit kills in the win (Sarah Gomish, Megan Flick, Gabrielle Stala and Brittany Moyer).

Jessica Brown continued to play an important role in the victory as she registered 41 assists. On the season, the senior has 235 assists. She averages 9.49 assists per set.

The team returns to action this Saturday, Sept. 19 when they take on Chestnut Hill College in Rutherford, N.J. at 3 p.m. Later that same day they will play Felician College at 5 p.m.

Those two matchups kick off a stretch of six straight road games for Lock Haven. Their next home match is against Shippensburg to kick of PSAC play on Friday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.

FH shuts-out Siena, moves to 6-0 Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu The defense of the Lock Haven University field hockey team continued to perform at an elite level during the toughest part of the schedule in terms of travel.

With a 2-0 win over Siena, the unit registered their third shutout in six games. In a stretch beginning Sept. 4 and concluding Sept. 13 saw the team play four games, with three of those games being played in New York and the fourth game being played in Maryland.

The four victories were won by an 11-2 margin with shutouts against Cornell to start the trip and a shutout to conclude the trip against Siena.

Pat Rudy’s team will not have to leave the state of Pennsylvania until the penultimate game of the regular season against the St. Louis Billikens on Oct. 25.

The team will be welcomed home in their Atlantic-10 (A-10) home opener against the Richmond Spiders on Friday, Sept. 18 at 3 p.m. The team then has a quick

turnaround as they take on the Georgetown Hoyas the following day at 2 p.m.

Last season the Bald Eagles were 2-0 against those two programs with the wins coming on the road.

The Spiders come into this contest with a record of 2-4. However, Richmond has played a tough schedule to this point. They’ve played the No. 17 team on two separate occasions and the No. 12 team. In those six games, they’ve scored eight goals and seven different players have scored.

Meanwhile, Georgetown will visit the Haven on eight days rest. Their record stands at 3-2 and this will be their first road game of the season. Much like Richmond, the Hoyas have got six goals from five different players this season.

In addition to their stellar defensive play, Lock Haven has found the back of the net 16 times already this season. Rachel Valentine leads the team with five goals and reigning A-10 Rookie of the Week Alyscia Smith is tied for second on the team with two goals.

The team effort that has led them to the 6-0 record is the best start for LHU since 2004.

Week three preview: at IUP Jayson Moyer Sports Editor jpm362@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University football team (0-2) fell at Seton Hill 27-10 on Saturday, losing their fifth straight game dating back to last season.

Lock Haven quarterback, Caleb Walton completed 20-42 passes for 244 yards, threw one touchdown, and had three interceptions. Walton’s lone touchdown pass came in the fourth quarter and was his 27th of his career at Lock Haven, moving him into sole possession of fourth place on the Lock Haven all-time touchdown pass list.

With his 244 yards on Saturday, Walton also moved into sixth place all-time in passing yards in Lock Haven history.

Wide receiver Shawn Seif continued his exceptional start to his Lock Haven career, catching six passes for 83 yards on Saturday. In week one against Clarion Seif caught five passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns. Seif also has 33 rushing yards on five attempts this season.

Redshirt-senior receiver, David Cook, caught six passes on Saturday for 74 yards. Cook now has 147 receiving yards on 12 receptions this season.

Lock Haven mustered only 94 yards on the ground, with Beau Swales carrying the ball nine times for 39 yards and Malyk Harris getting seven attempts for 34 yards. Seton Hill had 235 total rushing yards on 48 total attempts, averaging 4.9 yards per carry.

Brandon Stout led Seton Hill with 130 yards on 18 carries.

On the defensive side of the ball, redshirt-senior Tyrai Anderson intercepted his first pass of the season and returned it 23 yards. Anderson also had six total tackles and now has 13 total tackles on the season.

Daniel Strawbridge and Rahjeir Miles-Eubanks each had 12 tackles apiece to lead Lock Haven, Carmelo Cruz had 10 tackles including one tackle for loss and Tony Ballon had nine tackles and two sacks. Ballon also had nine tackles in week one, including a sack.

Senior kicker, Alex Bouhmeri was 1-1 on field goals, hitting a 20-yarder, and made his only extra point attempt.

Lock Haven will travel to Indiana University of Pennsylvania, who fell 34-33 to Kutztown on Saturday in their lone game of the season.

Trailing 21-6 at halftime, Kutztown outscored IUP 28-12 in the second half to pull out the one point victory.
