Campus leaders disagree on safety information availability Jane Spitnale Staff Writer jes6921@lhup.edu

In the past 15 years since the Columbine High School shooting, America’s attitude towards the topic of mass violence on school campuses has become an area of concern. Many feel worried while others are practically used to seeing the attacks on schools, wondering, am I next?

The nightmares of students and staff include such events, however no matter how frightening an idea may be, those at Lock Haven University must preserve the sense of safety.

The task is tricky when those in control clash on making the LHU Emergency Protocol documents available to students, which could possibly lead to a weakness in Lock Haven’s emergency preparedness.

When LHU President Fiorentino is asked about the lack of available documents on the Public Safety website regarding emergency protocols and whether or not this would impact the university’s response to an attack, Fiorentino appears confident and assures a safe campus.

“We have a very sophisticated internal system,” President Fiorentino said. “I understand the public’s want to have access to the documents, but by doing so critical information could be accessed by the wrong person.”

Fiorentino states that with advice from the FBI, Homeland Security, and police on a state and local level, there is a growing trend to keep school’s procedures private, in hopes of keeping the details out of the hands of potential attackers.

This sounds impressive, but how internal is the document?

It is soon discovered that the LHU Campus Police are currently providing full access via pamphlets in their office lobby of the university’s emergency protocols, something President Fiorentino spoke against clearly.

When speaking with the Director of Campus Police, Paul Alteri, there is a very stark difference in opinion on the matter of providing the public access to LHU’s emergency situation protocols.

When told that President Fiorentino had stated the school deliberately keeps the documents hidden from the public, Alteri is at a loss for words.

“It’s not on there?”Alteri asks while scrambling onto his computer to find any information on the protocols.

“We want people to see this.” Alteri says.

Alteri has worked with LHU Safety for twelve years and later confirms with relief that the emergency protocols are displayed on the old university website, which can be accessed by going to the “LHU Community” tab on the university’s home page.

It appears the relationship between safety officials and school officials is in dire need of improvement, which can explain the differences in responses when students were asked about the subject.

“I’m sure I would know where to go, yeah,” said Doug Rogers, a freshman However, some are unsure where they would go if an emergency on campus occurred.

“I know the police office is behind Glennon Health Services, but other than that, no,” said Samantha Way, a junior.

“Regardless of your sex, gender, identity, expression, or orientation, you’ve got some decisions to make, and it’s important that you are thoughtful,” said Young “Change is good, life is going to change and we can either adapt to suit your surroundings or you’ll adapt your surroundings to suit you.”

Professor Tara Mitchell, the faculty advisor for Gay Straight Alliance and Dr. Young, presented the graduates with their rainbow tassels and certificates. After receiving their certificates and tassels, the graduates were asked to make remarks on their time spent at Lock Haven University.

Brittany Duke, a Social Work major, commented on the amazing, supportive friends she made while in

school. Stephen Marks, a Psychology major, spoke about his time, saying it helped push him to go to graduate school. Jai Thompson, an Interdisciplinary Studies major decided to read a poem from American poet Langston Hughes.

The event ended with GSA President Megan Penny giving the concluding remarks, stating that “You [the graduates] are an inspiration to LGBTQ underclassmen that were making their way through college,” said Megan Penny, a sophomore outdoor recreation major and the President of the GSA. The ceremony had an incredible turnout, which proved that the inclusion of LGBTQ students at Lock Haven University is constantly growing.

University hosts symposium on bat diseases Ariel Guerra Design Manager aguerra2@lhup.edu

The outbreak of White Nose Syndrome in 2006 has accounted for the death of over 5.7 million bats in North America. Students, with the help of professors, have researched methods of prevention against this infectious fungus.

The science department held a Biology Symposium, featuring research on White-Nose Syndrome specifically, on April 29. The event was sponsored by Anadarko, a petroleum corporation with headquarters in Texas.

Scott Carnicom, the Dean of the College of Natural, Behavioral and Health Sciences, was very pleased with the turnout and for the opportunity to show what the students of the College of Natural, Behavioral and Health Sciences were working on.

“Our professors actually teach and our students get their hands dirty,” said Carnicom.

The Symposium included speakers such as Christopher Smyth, LHU Alumnus who is current-

ly getting his masters degree, and Greg Turner, an endangered mammal specialist who works with the PA Game Commission with remarks from Michael Fiorentino, Jr. LHU President.

Turner has been working very hard to inform the masses of this disease, especially since recent research shows that White Nose Syndrome has begun appearing on bats in Wisconsin and Michigan.

“The story is always the same, the fungus arrives and then the bats die,” said Turner.

Sean Lose and Jake Perryman, who are students that are both majoring in biology, worked under the direction of Barrie Overton, Associate Biology Professor, have evaluated two potential controls against the bacteria that causes White Nose Syndrome, Epicoccum nigrum, a biocontrol agent and Polyethelene Glycol, a chemical control.

“An integrated pest management approach can be taken to control the spread of Pd (Pseudogymnoascus destructans, or the sole cause of the disease), in non-natural hibernacula,” said Lose.

“Treatments are difficult, treatments are

risky, going in and spraying tons of pharmaceuticals are not really an option,” said Turner.

All of these studies have led to findings that put the country on track in the development of a control to decrease the bat mortality rate caused by White Nose Syndrome.

“We have to partner up to get out ahead of this infection front,” said Overton. “We are all mammals, so we should care, because this could happen to us.”

Cystic Fibrosis took a hit last Saturday when the Lock Haven community raised about $1,000 towards finding its cure.

Silver Shamrock Tattoo Co. hosted a tattoo benefit for which community members could get an awareness ribbon tattoo in any color for just $40.

Half of the proceeds went to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation.

Owner Freddie Wadsworth and his coworker Zach Spotts tattooed 47 people from noon until just after midnight. Donations were also made.

“It was crazy, but it was fun,” Wadsworth said. “We’ll definitely be doing something along these lines again in the future.”

The total of $1,005 all went to the Foundation in the name of Kahner Stewart, a toddler who was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis just a few weeks after his birth.

Many of Kahner’s family members also decided to donate to the cause and get tattooed in his honor.

His aunt Pauline Coleman got a half-heart, half-ribbon colored purple for Cystic Fibrosis with a teal outline for PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome).

“I love my tattoo,” Coleman said. “I have PCOS, so mine has two meanings that are close to my heart.”

I love working with her because she is on top of her stuff, she really is a do-er and sets out to do it right the first time,” she added.

Students dissatisfied with spring concert polling system Jennie Slota Guest Writer jslota@lhup.edu Several Lock Haven University students questioned why they bother voting for the spring concert.

Haven Activities Council sends a survey out at the end of every fall semester to the students’ email. The list consists of several artists of different genres. The students are then supposed to vote on who they would like to see perform at the school.

At the beginning of the spring semester HAC then releases to the students who the final choice will be.

“I voted, but I do not know why. I really am starting to believe my vote doesn’t even matter,” said sophomore Tony Ballon. “This is the second

time we got someone who wasn’t even on the list.”

HAC’s budget manager, Jodi Smith did not comment on the issue but instead referred to students on the council.

A big controversy students have around the campus is the concern of the votes being counted fairly.

“I would be more satisfied with the concert if we were sent the results of the majority of the votes,” Ballon said. “A statistic should be sent out to see how many students voted for what. At least we would know if the overall choice is fair.”

Given that there are many genres of music, it is difficult to satisfy every student.

However, students think it is unfair that country has been held at the university two years in a row.

“I don’t think it’s fair to all the students that we keep getting country music,” said junior

Natalie Fernandez. “I went to the concert, but I had to Google who Billy Currington even was.”

“The overall point of the survey is to answer the question, ‘what do the students want,’” said Michael Fiorentino, president of LHU. So is the survey being utilized properly based on what the students want?

“When the results come out we look at who we realistically can have,” said Scott Daube, a student member of HAC. “With Penn State and the Bryce Jordan Center right around the corner our options are limited.”

Other students do not think that is how this operation is being taken care of.

“They don’t pick fairly,” said senior, Bradin Carter. “I really think they need to take the whole student body into consideration. After all, it is our money that pays for the concert.”

Student veterans speak on war experiences Kate Hibbard News Editor khibbard@lhup.edu Two student veterans spoke about their war experiences to a crowd of more than 40 people Monday night. Though they both went over seas as part of Operation Enduring Freedom, their stories are very different.

Sean MacMillen, a graduate student studying clinical mental health counseling, was first commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in 1996 after graduating from LHU with a degree in geology.

Over 12 years, MacMillen served three combat tours in Afghanistan and held numerous leadership positions including infantry officer, platoon leader and battalion executive officer.

MacMillen said that war is in his blood.

His father served in Vietnam and his grandfather served in World War II. At first, MacMillen felt that being in the infantry was the “cool job.” He got to “blow stuff up” and jump out of airplanes.

“It was fun for a while, until I found myself in Afghanistan and people were shooting back at

me,” he said.

When MacMillen came back, he said he had a hard time readjusting to civilian life.

“I used to know to know what to wear every day,” he said. “I knew the schedule.”

Due to the stress of integration as well as PTSD and “survivor’s guilt,” MacMillen said he turned to drinking.

“I crawled into a bottle of Jack Daniels and stayed there a long time,” he said.

After his family left him, he realized he needed to do something. MacMillen joined a 12-step program for veterans and started seeing a counselor.

“I had to deal with those feeling things,” he said. “Once I learned how to do that, life was good.

I can trust again.”

David Scarpelli, a member of the PA Army National Guard and treasurer of the sociology club, served in Afghanistan in from 2007-2008 as platoon security force.

His jobs ranged from rebuilding roads that connected villages to training police forces. The indigenous people had different responses to the soldiers, depending on where they went.

The troops would get negative reactions in areas under threat of the Taliban, or in areas so remote the people hadn’t seen soldiers since the Russians in the Cold War. In some areas, the U.S. military had negatively affected the people.

“War is not above mistakes,” said Scarpelli.

Scarpelli stated the military matures people very quickly.

“They go in with these preconceived ideas…

They get in their first firefight and they’re singin’ a different toon,” he said. “It’s not fun and games. It’s not Call of Duty.”

Something else he realized is that Americans are not as culturally aware as they often think they are. He went on to explain what it was like to be working alongside those in the Middle East.

“We’re all human. We spent more time chillin’ and eating with Afghans than fighting them,” he said. “But, yes, we did get into some fights.”

Dawn of the computers in new sci-fi thriller Sam Shirk Staff Writer sxs1090@lhup.edu If you like off the wall scifi and movies that really make you think, then chances are you’ll probably like Transcendence.

Transcendence is the story of Dr. Will Castor as he works to create the perfect Artificial Intelligence. However, a radical anti-technology organization fights to prevent him from establishing a world where computers can transcend the abilities of the human brain.

The acting in this film was top notch! The stars were Johnny Depp, Rebecca Hall, and Morgan Freeman. Each of these actors brought a lot of emotion to their characters and I felt they did an outstanding job.

Transcendence touches on a lot of sensitive topics but when you get right to the bottom of the movie, it’s a cautionary tale warn-

ing against humans dependence on machines and some of the consequences of this fact.

Unfortunately, I can’t say I’m totally in love with the movie but I did really like it. I’d say the best way I can sum it up is by splitting the movie in half.

Where I felt this movie lacked most was the first half.

The beginning for me was very slow and it jumped around a little too much for my liking. There was also a lot of stuff that I felt could have been expanded on but wasn’t. As for character development in the first half, I felt some of it was missing compared to the second half.

The second half of the movie was absolutely fantastic.

Transcendence is directed by Wally Pfister who followed Christopher Nolan for quite some time.

The direction that Pfister took with this film was absolutely terrific! Viewers are treated to some pretty amazing technology and the special effects were fantas-

tic! As for camera work, I felt the shots were very well executed.

It was also in the second half that I felt viewers were able to connect with the characters more. There were a number of intense scenes where you could really feel what the characters were going through, especially Hall’s character. It was in this half that the movie truly captivated me.

One of my favorite things about Transcendence was the fact that it brought to the surface some questions that people don’t normally think about. I left the theater with my friend discussing some pretty out there things, especially where technology is concerned.

Overall, I’d say Transcendence was a pretty good film and if thrilling sci-fi is your type of movie, I’d say this one is definitely worth going to see.

Main campus show huge success at Clearfield Campus Kayla Marsh A&E Editor kmarsh2@lhup.edu On April 24 “Le Sprezzatura, A Cabaret” was performed at Lock Haven University’s Clearfield Campus. The show was previously performed on the Lock Haven main campus. The show was directed by LHU students Jarrett Thompson, Brooke Reese and Sara Billman and was performed entirely by campus students.

The show featured musical numbers, poetry and vignettes conceived and choreographed by the students. The event was held in a lounge at the Clearfield Campus, and received a good turnout.

Some of the main campus students were apprehensive about the performance but after visiting the campus and talking with students they felt more comfortable with the performance and the space provided.

Assistant Professor Ramona Broomer of the Visual and Performing Arts Department was the faculty advisor for the event. Broomer had taught theater at Clearfield Campus for over six years when the Director of Clearfield Branch Campus, suggested the collaboration with Lock Haven Main Campus.

Broomer is hoping this collaboration with the Clearfield Campus will spark more collaboration between the two campuses, not just in the theater department but span other departments as well.

“These students go to the same university but never get a chance to interact,” said Broomer. “It really is beneficial to the students.”

The performance was approved for progressive funds and Director Curley handled publicity for the performance so funding for the event was not an issue.

The performers collected funds during intermission for the local, struggling, community theater, the Clearfield Arts Studio Theatre (CAST).

7 Arts & Entertainment Atmosphere helps bring The a n e r A m rap back down to earth Albu Spencer McCoy Staff Writer smccoy@lhup.edu Atmospheres latest album “Southsiders” leaked April, 30 and not only lived up to the hype it received but passed it. This album is incredible. I have been listening to Atmosphere for around four years now and this is by far my favorite album of theirs.

If you don’t know who Atmosphere is heres a quick rundown. Two guys, rapper Sean Daley and DJ Anthony Davis are the drive behind the group. When I first started listening to Atmosphere I soon realized that I was one of few. Atmosphere has been releasing music since 1997 but has only recently been gaining popularity.

“God loves Ugly” was released in 2002 and in my opinion made Hip-Hop fans realize that these guys have got something special and that they were going to do big things. He has been releasing albums since then but nothing has seemed to really boost his popularity.

Southsiders is the album we have been waiting for

by Atmosphere. Their music has always been good but I think this album is going to give them the popularity boost they deserve.

Daley’s lyrics are truly one of a kind. His flow is great and each one of his songs have a deep meaning that every listener can take away from.

Drugs are a hot topic in rap music, however Atmosphere raps about the truth revolving around the use of drugs, and the addiction that can be developed from their use. It’s clear that Daley has had a long past of drug abuse, whether it be in his family or core group of friends is unclear but a lot of his songs have a driving force behind them saying “I lost friends to these addictions and heres why.”

If you like real stories that give real definition to controversial topics than Atmosphere is perfect for you.

This isn’t your typical rap you would hear on the radio.

This is real and the stories being told tell a true story of pain and anger.

I think that’s what rap is really all about and we have started to really stray from that path. Southsiders tells a great story, and that’s what raps all about.

“The Amazing Spider-Man 2” brings new excitement to cinema Kathleen Ellison A&E Editor kae742@lhup.edu Clear up your schedules because “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” is coming to theaters this weekend. The much anticipated superhero movie is getting an early screening at the Roxy tonight at 9:30 p.m. in 2D and 3D. The continuation of Andrew Garfield’s Peter Parker and his girlfriend Gwen Stacey (played by Emma Stone) will feature a whole new array of villains including the nefarious Electro (played by Jamie Foxx).

So far the movie has met mixed reviews, receiving a 62 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Time magazine claimed that the movie “has lost its sense of direction, romance and heart.” This step back for the series might be perhaps from one too many writers.

Notwithstanding this the media world is already posed for the on-

slaught of Spider-Man with the recent release of “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” action-adventure game for Xbox One. The Beenox game is surprisingly available despite threats of delaying the release.

The new movie has also caused rumors to fly of a series of spin-offs centering on the Spider-Man villains.

Following the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the coproducers of “The Amazing SpiderMan 2” (Matt Tolmach and Avi Arad) both believe their villains are victims of circumstance and consequently “it makes something really interesting.”

Jamie Foxx already expressed interest in reprising his role in an interview with The News.

Besides the early showing on Thursdays the Roxy will also be screening this movie on Friday at 7 p.m. and 10 p.m., Saturday at 2 p.m., 7 p.m., and 10 p.m.

“When You Were Here” by Daisy Whitney This heartfelt novel follows Danny who is left alone three weeks before his graduation, after his mother died battling cancer for five years. He doesn’t know what to do with her estate, what to say for his Valedictorian speech, or even how to be happy anymore. Danny receives a letter from his mom’s property owner in Tokyo, where she had been getting treatment. He travels to Tokyo to connect with his mother’s memory and find the side he didn’t know about her.

“Partials” by Dan Wells This sci-fi series tells the story of humanity fighting against the Partials-engineered organic beings identical to humans. After a virus killed off many of humanity, the survivors of a couple of thousand crammed onto Long Island. However sixteenyear-old Kira wants to find a solution, and tries to save her race and discovers that the survival of both humans and Partials rests in her attempts to find the answers.

Stay fit in the summer heat Lisa Conner Staff Writer lconner@lhup.edu

Summer offers a great opportunity to stay in shape. However, the humid weather might be a major difficulty to deal with. Don’t let the hot weather keep you from staying or getting in shape!

When you exercise outside on hot days, make sure you do it at the right time. It is silly to work out in the middle of the day! The sun is at it’s highest from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. so avoid exerting your body during these times.

Try to work out earlier in the morning while the air is still cool. If you’re not a morning person then workout in the evenings after 6 p.m. By this time the air is beginning to cool off and working out during this time won’t be so hard on your body.

Make sure that when you do exercise outside that you stay hydrated. The weather is much warmer during the summer and so we are sweating much more than we usually would. Try drinking double the amount of water that you normally do to avoid dehydration. To avoid cramps while running, make sure you drink water no less than 30 minutes before you work out. This will give the water in your stomach time to settle down. Also don’t forget to hydrate after. Cold water after your workout will hydrate you the fastest, but throughout the rest of your day drink room temperature water, at this temperature the water will stay in your system longer.

Use this warm weather to your advantage. With the summer brings about beach and pull season. Swimming laps and water aerobics is a great way to stay in shape and you stay nice and cool while doing it. If you are exercising in an outdoor pool, be sure to apply plenty of sunscreen before. It is also important to drink plenty of water as well. Just because you are in water, doesn’t mean you don’t sweat.

Be sure to enjoy your summer and don’t let this warm summer weather get in your way for staying fit and active.

Angela Dolan Editor-in-Chief As we finish out the last issue of the semester, I am left with a feeling of satisfaction.

The Eagle Eye has come a long way in the last few years. We have expanded our staff and transitioned to accepting only locally written pieces.

The newsroom has become a second home for me. Every Wednesday night has been spent putting together a new issue. Throughout the school week many of us find solace in coming here. Not just to work on the paper, but also to do homework and hang out.

Tears have been shed, ketchup packets and fruit roll ups have been thrown, and celebrations were had. The Eagle Eye staff is like a second family for me. I’m not sure I would have made it through my career

at LHU without them.

I’m sad to be leaving but I know I’m leaving the paper in worthy hands. Congratulations Kyra Smith-Cullen on becoming our new Editor-in-Chief and Katie Hibbard on becoming our new Managing Editor. You both are enthusiastic, knowledgeable journalists and will go far in this profession.

To those who profess journalism to be a dying art, you’re wrong. Journalism is alive and well. It’s just evolving to fit our ever changing world.

In closing I want to thank everyone for their hard work. I also want to thank our dedicated readers who keep us publishing this paper. The long nights spent arguing over headlines and front page stories have been some of the best nights of my college career. I love you all!

Dayna Bloch Managing Editor dbloch@lhup.edu Longer than a one-night-stand, more romantic than a no-strings-attached, but less pressure than a full-on relationship; summer romance has a set of entirely new rules. There may be an expiration date but a summer fling can be one of the best relationships you’ve experienced.

Dress appropriately.

Now, more than ever, is the time to flaunt it. It is finally acceptable to wear crop tops and dresses daily. Summer is all about the cute-sexy type outfits you can put together.

Go places.

Sitting pool side with a drink in one hand and a great book in the other may sound like the perfect way to spend the summer, but you won’t meet anyone but your next door neighbor that way.

Set boundaries.

Before getting into anything make sure you both know what’s going to happen.

Know up-front what you’re in for and what you can expect come the end of fall.

Being on the same page will make it more fun for the both of you.

Meet the family.

Preferably, you’ll be spending a lot of time with your summer beau, make the time to go to his family BBQ or spend the day at his pool. Getting cozy with the fam doesn’t mean wedding bells are in your future but it may lead to an invite on the family vacation.

Keep it classy.

Just because it’s summer and time for a little extra flirting, don’t get involved with someone who is already spoken for. You may want the perfect fling, but don’t be the girl to help ruin a relationship just for a bit of summer fun.

Go outside your comfort zone.

Summer is a time for new adventures. A guy who isn’t exactly your ‘type’ can be a fun way to experience what you said you would never do. Come fall all you’ll have is the memories of what you did, or didn’t do, that summer.

Keep your guard up.

Because this is nothing more than a couple-month fling don’t forget to remind yourself to keep your feelings in check. There’s nothing worse than falling for someone who isn’t remotely interested.

Back in 1975 returning veterans waited to hear information about the G.I bill. Recently LHU student veterans shared their Forget the social media. experiences at an event hosted by the sociology club. A documentary about America’s involvement in covert wars followed Post pictures and share your memories, but don’t focus on making it known that you found the perfect summer guy. What’s important is enjoying the few months the event. For more information go to page 4. you have; get to know him instead of concentrating on the latest Tweets.

Stay safe.

You can be carefree without being careless. Don’t let something permanent get in the way of your temporary fun.

When summer comes along the last thing anyone wants to do is heat up an oven, let alone spend hours slaving away in the kitchen when you could be enjoying the outdoors. Quick summer salads are a great way to avoid heating up your home with an oven and allow you to take advantage of fresh summer produce. These recipes are quick and simple allowing you to spend your days playing in the sunshine instead of cooped up inside trying to put together your next meal.

Cucumber Salad Ingredients: 1/4 cup plain low-fat yogurt 2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh dill 1 tablespoon coarsely chopped fresh parsley 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil 1 1/2 teaspoons coarsely chopped mint 2 teaspoons Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1 garlic clove 5 1/2 cups thinly sliced cucumber (about 2 large) 2 1/2 cups thinly sliced red onion Combine the first 11 ingredients in a food processor or a blender, and process until well blended.

Combine the cucumber and onion in a large bowl.

Drizzle with yogurt mixture, and toss to coat.

Grilled Caesar Salad

Ingredients: 10 (1/2-ounce) slices diagonally cut French bread (about 1/4 inch thick) Cooking spray 3 garlic cloves, divided 7 canned anchovy fillets, rinsed, drained, and divided 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 large pasteurized egg yolk 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 3 romaine lettuce hearts, cut in half lengthwise (about 24 ounces) 1/2 ounce Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, shaved (about 1/3 cup) 1. Preheat grill to high.

2. Coat bread slices with cooking spray. Place the bread on grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill for 1 minute or until golden, turning once. Remove bread from grill. Cut 1 garlic clove in half; rub both sides of bread with cut sides of garlic clove.

Discard clove.

3. Pat anchovy fillets dry with a paper towel.

Combine remaining 2 garlic cloves, 2 anchovy fillets, juice, mustard, pepper, salt, and egg yolk in a blender; process until smooth. With blender on, add oil, 1 tablespoon at a time; process until smooth.

4. Place lettuce, cut sides down, on a grill rack coated with cooking spray; grill 2 minutes. Turn; grill 1 minute. Remove from heat; coarsely chop lettuce. Place lettuce in a large bowl; drizzle with dressing, tossing gently to coat.

5. Cut remaining 5 anchovy fillets in half lengthwise. Arrange about 3/4 cup salad on each of 10 plates; top each serving with 1 bread slice and 1 anchovy half. Sprinkle each serving with about 1 1/2 teaspoons Parmigiano-Reggiano.

Asian Green Bean Salad Ingredients Salad: 3 ounces uncooked linguine 1 pound green beans, trimmed 2 cups diagonally sliced celery 1 cup thinly sliced red bell pepper 1/2 cup (1/2-inch) slices green onions 1/3 cup chopped fresh cilantro Dressing: 1/4 cup rice wine vinegar 1/4 cup low-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons dark sesame oil 2 teaspoons grated peeled fresh ginger 1/2 teaspoon sugar 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper 3 garlic cloves, minced 1 red jalape単o pepper, seeded and finely chopped (about 1 tablespoon) 1.

To prepare salad, break linguine in half. Cook pasta according to package directions, omitting salt and fat; add beans during last 3 minutes of cooking. Drain and rinse with cold water; drain. Place mixture in a large bowl. Stir in celery, bell pepper, onions, and cilantro.

2.

To prepare dressing, combine vinegar and remaining ingredients in a small bowl; stir with a whisk until blended. Add to salad; toss well.

Cover and chill.

LHU Crushes Twitter page is toxic

Feminism is contagious, and our campus is no exception.

The more professors, faculty or students who voice their opinions on issues, the more others want to join in. Unfortunately, this applies to both positive and negatives attitudes.

I get discouraged by the attitudes on campus about sexual assault and harassment. It’s disheartening to read about people who think the infamous LHU Crushes Twitter page, which sexually harasses some people, is just fun and games. I challenge anyone to seriously defend a Twitter page where people anonymously post crude statements and personal information.

Feminism led a small group of people, myself included, to spearhead a mission to get this Twitter page shut down. As somebody who has been victimized by this Twitter feed, I felt it was my moral obligation to report it.

This group truly believed that students did not deserve to be sexually harassed by anonymous people online. That leads to a hostile environment, online and in person. People mentioned in the

anonymous tweets have felt embarrassed, violated and even stalked.

Some believe that nothing was done regarding this Twitter. It’s important for LHU students to know the truth.

The student running the page was investigated by campus officials, then removed from the university, thanks to the perseverance of a group of people who truly stand for the right for everyone to feel safe on campus.

“Lock Haven University students have a civil responsibility as members of a campus environment to go against things of this nature, because it is a threat to them and other students,” said senior psychology major Steven Marks, who met with the university President to discuss the issue twice.

Marks also built coalitions of support to bring the site down, including Student Government Board, the President’s Commission of the Status of Women and The HOPE Center.

Unfortunately, this Twitter page has recently been reactivated. As the student who was running it originally no longer attends here, I cannot help but wonder who is running it now. Why would the same student even bother keeping up with the page or anyone else for that matter?

I’m saying this as both a feminist and, more importantly, a human being: it is not flattering to

say any of the disrespectful things said on that page. There is no humor in creating and perpetuating such a hostile rape culture environment on our campus.

Likewise, it’s horrible to see an article written about how people go on this page and post tweets because it’s something like a hobby. Are people insinuating that sexual harassment is a hobby of theirs? Try spending your time to better society.

When it comes to social issues, there are many people who work hard every semester to do this through different clubs and organizations on campus. Go to some HOPE Center events, check out the Gay-Straight Alliance and Gender Equality Liberation clubs and events or even explore the Women and Gender Studies minor. Getting involved with any of these organizations will help you better understand the concerns I have.

As I get ready to graduate in a couple of weeks, I know that I will be leaving as a well-rounded adult, mostly because I decided to get involved in different social issues and voice my opinion.

I hope that more people try to get involved on campus in a positive manner and voice their opinions when they feel that there is injustice. The attitudes people have on campus will carry on as we all enter the real world together.

Twitter posts pernicious, pornographic

In the Eagle Eye article entitled “Recent campus twitter trend leaves student population with mixed opinions” (April 24, 2014), with the exception of one student who calls the feed “repulsively disturbing,” the other three students interviewed call it fun, innocent and entertainment.

The VP for University Relations, Mr. Rodney Jenkins, when asked if the university was investigating the anonymous creator of the account, was also quoted as saying that “we have no moral or legal power to do anything.”

How can a university ever lose its moral power to intervene on the side of decency, respect and dignity?

I followed this Twitter feed

last semester and thought well of LHU when it was briefly taken down by relevant LHU offices. The recent article incorrectly states, “It doesn’t appear as if any student is willing to take action.”

LHU students indeed took action at the end of the fall semester, and the site was temporarily shut down. What we are seeing now is second-generation slime added to firstgeneration filth.

This particular Twitter feed promises anonymity to the posters. In fact, it is only this cloak of anonymity that makes our students bold enough to say some of the pornographic things that you find on this site.

If said face to face by one individual with a government issued ID to another individual with a government issued ID, then many of these users would be held accountable for their utterances. I am thinking specifically of the posts where anonymous

posters identify young women on LHU campus, often by name, whose “pussy” and “anus” they would like to “destroy.” This is police material, without the promise of anonymity.

LHU Crushes posts comments that run the gamut of what we may call traditional, titillating, lustful and obscene /violent fantasies.

The lustful posts run the gamut of singling out a special body part of the person and what they would like to do to that body part.

Judging by the majority of the posts under this category, the favorite (repressed?) sexual act of LHU students is oral sex. The poster would like to perform oral sex on the person; the poster would like to perform manual masturbatory acts on the person; the poster would like to have penetrative sex with the person; the poster would like to “give” children to the person through penetrative sex.

The obscene/violent posts are

aggressive sexual fantasies mildly disguised in clever sounding words.

Take away the clever-sounding words, which is easy to do, and they lay bare their intent to hurt the person in a sexual manner.

Unfortunately, the space opened up by LHU Crushes, where the might of the penis is bragged about so often, is the role of women in pornography. The discourse of LHU Crushes, because it recruits and grooms students to coopt the language of pornography, fills the space opened up by the anonymous posters with the only subject positions available — that of contexts and images that promote the sexual degradation, primarily, of women.

White House task You know what really force tackles sexual ruffles my feathers? assault on campus Vicky Kramer Staff Writer vak1553@lhup.edu

Across the U.S, colleges and universities deem their campuses safe environments for students.

But how safe are they really?

Almost daily there are stories on the news of shootings, bomb threats and assaults occurring on U.S college campuses.

In recent news, The White House task force is taking extreme efforts to prevent sexual assaults from occurring on college campuses. Their mission is to increase the number of attacks that are reported to authorities and to educate students on sexual assault along with gender-based violence. The administration also stated it will be launching a website called NotAlone.gov which will require colleges and universities to conduct surveys about sexual assault using on-campus students.

Joe Biden addressed the public about this issue and made it very clear that action needs to be taken in order to prevent these crimes from occurring.

USA Today quoted Biden as saying, “I understand all the excuses and I understand all the rationale, but colleges and universities can no longer turn a blind eye or pretend rape or sexual assault doesn’t occur on their campuses.”

Here at Lock Haven University, we are a relatively small and quiet campus. I wanted to know how the student body here feels about their own personal safety on campus and whether or not they feel that the plan to conduct surveys across U.S. college campuses is a good idea.

Megan Oliveri, a junior said that she agrees with the White House’s

future plans of conducting surveys on campus, but that it is not going to stop sexual assaults from happening.

“Regardless of the college, sexual assaults happen everywhere.

However, I feel relatively safe here at Lock Haven and I think campus police does a great job at surveying campus at night,” said Oliveri.

On the other hand, Matt Schessler, a senior disagrees with the White House’s actions and doesn’t believe that conducting surveys will help any.

“Surveys mean nothing, enforcement is everything,” stated Schessler.

While Schessler agrees he too feels relatively safe in Lock Haven, that doesn’t mean assaults do not occur: “I know someone who was a victim of sexual assault and campus authorities handled the situation very well.

However, not everyone is that lucky.

Often times, the victim’s abuse can be easily covered up due to shame, guilt or fear, leaving the victim feeling totally helpless.”

The White House’s plan sounds good on paper, but that is about it. Surveys can collect information, but not much more than that. A survey will not be able to tell the grief, horror or emotional turmoil someone is dealing with who was assaulted. Nor does it address how a victim feels when he or she has no one to turn to.

Instead of conducting surveys, there should be stricter laws and stricter law enforcement in order to protect innocent people from being assaulted.

Sexual assault is slowly becoming an epidemic and if we are not careful, it may soon get out of control.

If you or someone you know has been a victim of sexual assault, please report it to your local authorities. And remember, you are not alone.

When you and a friend have to go your separate ways.

This is the final edition of the Eagle Eye for the spring of 2014 and the final edition ever for a few key staff members. While a lot of our own are moving on and I appreciate each and every one of them in their own right, I would like to take this opportunity to wish the very best to senior copy editor, Rachel Mazza; editor-in-chief, Angela Dolan; and sports editor, Erika White.

Rachel has been a true gem during my time with the Eagle Eye. I’ll be honest: at first she seemed a bit stand-offish and I really did not know how to “break the ice” and get to know her. Eventually, I just went for it and found that my initial impression of Rachel was way off and that she is actually one of the nicest, funniest people I have ever talked to. Good luck in post-grad life, Rachel! Do great things!

The thing I’ll miss and admire most about Angela is her perseverance. I have no doubt that moving into the professional world will be a very smooth transition for Angela, as she worked her rear-end off time after time in all aspects of her life. The whole reason I work for the Eagle Eye is because of Angela. Thank you for your friendship and the lessons you have taught me over the past few years. It has been an honor to work by your side and call you “friend.”

Last, but certainly not least, Erika. We met in a mass media class with Dr. Mooney-Williams a few years back and our first conversation was an in-class argument. After that, we became friends fast. Our friendship is one that involves constant picking and teasing, but I would not want it any other way. Whether flying high or riding the struggle bus, we made it through the rigors of the communication department semester after semester. I’m going to miss you a ton, Erika.

People come in and out of our lives and I believe that each of them has a reason for crossing our paths. Whether it’s temporary or for life, the people that you form bonds with influence you on this bumpy road of life and these three beautiful women are no exception. I want to say another big “thank you” to Rachel, Angela, and Erika. Not only did you do a fantastic job as leaders of the Eagle Eye newspaper, but you are great friends to me. Good luck in everything that you do in life, I know that you are all bound for greatness.

As I wrap things up one last time this semester, I want to wish all seniors graduating next Saturday the best of luck in life and to remind you to keep close the friends you have made over the last few years…because otherwise, you’re bound to ruffle some feathers.

The Lock Haven University men’s and women’s outdoor track & field teams capped off the 2014 regular season with another fine showing on Sunday, April 27 at Cornell Big Red Invitational.

Lock Haven will return to action on Thursday, May 1 at the 2014 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.

Leading the way today for Lock Haven was Paul Stults (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro), who was third (top DII finisher) in the triple jump with a mark of 47-02.50. It’s the thirdbest mark in school history.

The Haven men also got a solid effort from Corey King (Centre Hall, Pa./Penns Valley), who doubled in the 100 and 200 meter events. He was fourth in the 100 with a personal-best time of 11:05 (#PSAC). King took ninth in the 200 with a PSAC mark of 22.69.

Tyler Hileman (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) and Alex Coburn (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cumberland Valley) both hit PSAC marks today in the 3,000 meter steeplechase and 800, respectively.

Hileman took second in the steeple with a time of 9:51.66, becoming the third Bald Eagle qualified for the PSAC Championship in the event.

On the women’s side, Brittany Whitmer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) was second (top DII finisher) in the high jump with a mark of 5-5 (#PSAC) Cassie Beach (Roaring Springs, Pa./Northern Bedford) became the first Lady Eagle to hit a PSAC mark in the javelin throw with a secondplace (top DII finisher). She hit a mark of 122-9 today.

Lysa Mealing (Altoona, Pa./ Altoona) had a strong double in the jumping events. She was seventh in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 35-10 (#PSAC) and added a new PSAC qualifying mark in the long jump (10th overall, 17-0.25).

Jessica McDonald (Marietta, Pa./Donegal) clocked a PSAC mark in the 1,500 meter run with a time of 4:55.74 (16th overall) to round out another strong day for LHU track & field.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, April the 29th of 2014 a huge announcement was made that not only rocked the NBA, but the world of Donald Sterling, owner of the Los Angeles Clippers. NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, took the podium for to speak on the topic of Sterling’s racist remarks that were recorded during a phone conversation with his girlfriend, V. Stiviano. Commissioner Silver recapped the conversation that took place between Sterling and Stiviano, confirming that the male voice on the recording is Sterling’s. Silver also reiterated that the remarks made by Sterling are not compliant with league policy and the image that the National Basketball Association strives to maintain.

That was when he dropped the bomb: Donald Sterling is banned from associating with the NBA at any capacity for life.

Not only was Sterling banned from associating with any league affiliated event, but he was also fined the league maximum, $2.5 million for his discriminatory and racist remarks. On top of all of that, Silver urged the owners of the NBA to force Sterling’s hand into selling the Clippers franchise. However, it will not be an easy task to get the Clippers organization out of the grasp of the Sterling family, as several of Donald Sterling’s relatives either own part of or

work for the Clippers. That will all have to playout before we can know if Sterling will benefit from his circle’s deep integration in the Clippers.

This was Silver’s first major test as commissioner of the league and it is safe to say that he passed with flying colors. Commissioner Silver made a statement with the lifetime ban of Donald Sterling: there will be no discrimination or intolerance in the NBA so long as he is around. This ban is an important step forward for more than just the NBA, but for society in general. Just when it was common for a person to think that racism no longer existed, a man of Sterling’s socioeconomic stature comes out and makes extremely racist comments. This experience should be a real wake-up call to all of us. We need to be aware of the racism that still exists today, especially when it comes in the form of powerful men like Donald Sterling.

So now I tip my hat to the commissioner.

Though I was skeptical when Silver took over for David Stern, there is no doubt in my mind now that he will be one of the greatest leaders this league has ever seen.

Track leaps over last hurdle Bret Pallotto Staff Writer bmp6070@lhup.edu The Lock Haven men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams will compete in the 2014 PSAC Outdoor Championships at Shippensburg University.

The men’s team will send 17 athletes that will participate in 23 individual events.

The team placed fourth at last year’s PSAC Championships and will be lead by Alex Monroe (Lewistown, Pa./Indian Valley) once again. Monroe is the defending champion in the 5K race. He enters this year’s championships as the #2 seed in both the 5K and 10K. The #1 seed owns a time of 14:04.49 while Monroe’s time is 14:09.37 in 5K. In the 10K, the top seed possess a time of 28:40.88 and Monroe’s time is 29:55.96. The two are expected to battle for the title in both events.

Paul Stults (Glenolden, Pa./Interboro)

will participate in both the high jump and triple jump. Stults finished tenth last year in the triple jump and is seeded #2 for this year’s event. Freshman Rahjeir Miles-Eubanks (Coatesville, Pa./Coatesville) is also a #2 seed heading into this year’s competition. Miles-Eubanks will throw javelin and is ranked #11 in DII. Fifteen Lock Haven women will compete in 19 individual events this year. The Lady Eagles finished 12th at the PSAC Championships last year. Brittany Whitmer (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) placed 4th in the high jump last year and will head into this competition as the #2 seed and #13 among DII. Whitmer is a co-holder of a PSAC-leading mark of 1.7m in the high jump. Last season, the winning height was 1.73m.

Wynnie Green (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton Area), who placed 4th in the 400m in the 2012-2013 season, is ranked fourth in the 400m dash. The championships begin May 1 and will conclude on May 3.

LAX to host PSAC Tournament Erika White Sports Editor ewhite@lhup.edu The LHU lacrosse team (15-2) will be hosting the 2014 PSAC Tournament this Friday through Saturday. Lock Haven, who is currently ranked #1, will verse #5 West Chester on Friday at 1 p.m. #2 Mercyhurst will then play against #3 IUP at 4 p.m.

Leading the team for Lock Haven is junior captain Jessica Pandolf. Pandolf has 67 goals on the season, five of which are game-winning. She also has 17 assists and is fourth in ground balls with an average of 3.29 per game. Pandolf is also a three-time All-PSAC selection for midfield.

Senior Chelsea Borrino will be another one to watch out for during semifinals.

Borrino has 71 assists, ranking her second in the nation [in assists] and has 24 goals this season.

Junior Kelly Hamilton will also be a contribution during play. Hamilton had five assists this season with eight caused turnovers, 25 ground balls, and 46 goals.

The winner of each game will face off on Saturday for the Championship.

Ticket prices start at $2 for students and $7 for adults. Students with PSAC IDs will be allowed to enter for free.
