LHU council of trustees visits construction site Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu The construction on campus that began back in the spring is still ongoing and students are questioning what it’s going to look like in the end.

The week before the Fall 2015 semester started, Faculty, Staff and Students received an email from the Facilities Planning and Scheduling Coordinator, Marchal Rote, on what to expect when returning to campus.

Students and faculty can see that the University Commons project is well under way, the grass is growing and the pavilions are built. The renovations to Ulmer include new offices for senior administrators as well as the President and combining the north and south entrances into one entrance.

According to The Lock Haven Express, it cost the university $2.3 million for the University Commons and the renovations to Ulmer, $1.66 million to demolish Russell Hall, $1.6 million for the general construction of Ulmer, $480,000 on plumbing and $225,300 on electric.

James Phelan, a sophomore studying communication at Lock Haven University, says, “The

construction is bothersome to me. I think it’s building beauty and when it’s done, our campus will look a little more modern, however, I think it’s distracting and it should have been completed over the summer.”

According to The Express, the rain in June set the schedule of the construction back a little.

Recently, Lock Haven University’s Council of Trustees visited the construction site and they were given a tour by LHU president Dr. Michael Fiorentino Jr. Vice President of University Relations, Rodney Jenkins gave a statement on behalf of the trustees regarding the construction.

“The Council of Trustees and Lock Haven University leadership is very pleased with the construction

on campus. They understand that this is a multi-year project that will help make our institution more competition, more accessible and much more attractive. In Ulmer we have consolidated student-related services creating a one-stop shop to serve our students more efficiently.

Once completed, the President and Provost will join student affairs, financial aid, and the Registrar’s office in the building.

A great new addition to campus will be University Commons. In the center of campus, the commons area will be a vibrant place for students to congregate. Once completed with the addition of the amphitheater, it will also be a great option for picnics, concerts, or organized gatherings.

The two pavilions offer opportunity for food and great seating. The first phase will open in a few weeks, followed by the second phase, which is planned for opening in the fall of next year. ” Jenah Dellinger-Eaton, a junior studying English at Lock Haven University said, “Although now it looks like a mess and is annoying, I’m excited to see the end result.”

Continued crusade against Planned Parenthood Joanna Harlow Reporter ejh1498@lhup.edu “The goal here is not to shut down the government,” Speaker of the House John Boehner told Politico last Thursday. “The goal is to stop these horrific practices of organizations selling baby parts. So that’s the goal here.”

Republicans drove a bill blocking Planned Parenthood’s federal funds through the House on Friday, hoping to contain demands by conservatives for a politically risky showdown.

On Tuesday, Senators voted to move ahead on legislation 54-42, falling short of the 60 votes that were needed to advance the bill. The House voted 241-187 following a dramatic debate that included a graphic, poster-sized photo of a scarred, aborted fetus.

Boehner has been under pressure from House Republicans who are reacting to videos allegedly depicting agents of Planned Parenthood discussing fetal tissue sales. The videos were apparently recorded secretly and the organization says that they show signs of doctoring and no evidence of malpractice. House Democrats back the organization’s statements.

Planned Parenthood gets around $450 million yearly in federal payments, mostly Medicaid reimbursements for handling low-income patients. That’s around one-third of the organization’s $1.3 billion annual budget. Practically none of the federal money can be used for abortions.

Dr. Sandra Barney, of Lock Haven’s history and political science department, says of the inflammatory claims against Planned Parenthood: “The New York Times and other reputable news agencies have questioned the authenticity of these videos. That the Republican leadership in the House would use such tainted artifacts, as rationale for shutting down the government is disturbing. More importantly, perhaps, is that this move is just one more assault on efforts to protect women’s health initiatives. It feels like this is just the next salvo in the never-ending war on women’s reproductive rights. This time, the whole nation might be held hostage.”

Some Republicans say that they are willing to shut down the government using the power of the purse to completely defund Planned Parenthood. Thirty-one Republicans have signed onto a July 30 letter from Rep. Mick Mulvaney, R-South Carolina, pledging opposition to any measure that doesn’t defund Planned Parenthood. The conservative House Freedom Caucus has promised the same. Beyond Friday’s bill, some conservatives want to attach language halting Planned Parenthood’s payments to broader legislation financing other government agencies, which will otherwise run out of money next Thursday.

Boehner has been under scrutiny from other GOP leaders for being “noncommittal” about defunding. Some Republicans have threatened to force a House vote, which would remove him from his post as Speaker of the House if he does not back them during upcoming battles over government borrowing and spending.

Lock Haven rallies for recovery from drugs and alcohol Joshua Cenderelli Staff Writer jxc3298@lhup.edu Drugs and alcohol are a prevalent issue to college students; whether hearing about a party, having friends who do it, or knowing someone who has succumb to the devastating effects.

On September 26, at Riverview Park in Lock Haven, there will be the “Rally for Recovery” awareness walk for a “drug free tomorrow”.

Jennifer Lange, the project coordinator for the rally states, “a significant percentage of college students are involved in substance abuse. It’s normalized as college culture, but severe issues develop over time, and can have dramatic and traumatic effects.”

Earlier this year, Lock Haven University showed the movie ““The Anonymous People””, which brings attention to the stigma of addiction that will continue to hurt those affected by the disease. When Lange saw the movie it showed her that

addiction affects many people and she wants the community to find hope in recovery.

Advocates for A Drug Free Tomorrow, one of the sponsors for the rally, help provide communitybased solutions and awareness year round and Lange is proud to be a part of it.

At the rally there will be live music, free food, games, obstacle courses and a dunk tank. There will also be tables with information about community resources for those in active addiction and their families.

Along with Drug Free Tomorrow, another sponsor for the rally is West Branch Drug and Alcohol Abuse Commission.

When asked what she wanted students to know about the cause Lange said, “I would like students to know that, if they or someone they know is in active addiction, there’s hope.”

Judeaa Wright: A turbulent ride in a musical family Judeaa Wright Guest Writer jnw5122@lhup.edu My earliest memories of my parents are shrouded amongst play sets and uncomfortable sleeping positions in the chairs of music studios. My mother’s voice fell like rain on church congregations as my father vigorously worked the soundboard. There were always standing ovations. I still remember my father’s first play, “The Wellingtons” exactly four acts and several hours too long. It was held in the auditorium of Media elementary school on a Friday and Saturday night. There was standing room only in the auditorium.

It was the first time I’d ever seen that many people in one place. The cast was so proud to have sold so many tickets and couldn’t wait to begin performing. The energy was upbeat and, to the shy child that I was, it was slightly overwhelming.

I remember sitting on the edge of the stage like a statue as a dancer in the play floated by me, lightly touching the top of my head. She was dancing to

the song “What About the Children” by Yolanda Adams with white paint concealing her face.

Growing up, I didn’t appreciate the magical family I was apart of. I recall complaining about always being so busy and wanting to be like other families, who were home eating dinner by six instead of eleven at night. Other children didn’t have to worry about taking down sets after the play was through. I was surrounded by adoring fans who repeatedly told me how amazing my parents were; however I was too out of it to really understand.

My teenage years were especially interesting.

During that time, I decided that I was nothing like my family. I didn’t want to sing, act or write plays. I decided that I would instead fall madly in love with the more analytical side of life, science.

Somewhere between the spectacular and mind blowing events my parents put on, I found myself feeling like an outsider. I became convinced that I would never be able to write or direct like my father but most of all sing; I would never sing like my mother.

One of my favorite memories took place in my grandmother’s house in the middle of the night. I remember waking up to the sound of my mothers very first CD playing and watching my grandmother hum along to the sounds of her daughters voice. My mother’s voice brought peace to my grandmother when she had trouble sleeping.

“I have found that being myself is a work of art all on its own.”

Growing up, I hated singing with my mother, even now it still makes me nervous. She sings like an archangel and I’m still earning my wings Looking back on my life, it should be no surprise that I ended up acting in a play and singing on street corners. I laugh whenever I recall how hard I fought against being artistic and see how life only catapulted me into becoming the person I am today. I realize that I’ll never be as outstanding and talented as my parents are but that doesn’t matter. I have found that being myself is a work of art all on its own, what I bring to the table is unique to me.

My parents will always be an inspiration to me, and my own personal super heroes. My childhood consisted of long nights and early mornings, sleeping in music studio chairs and dozing off on my grandmother’s shoulder while attending father’s plays. I can still remember resting on the pews of churches while my mother’s singing brought the crowds to their feet.

Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu The fall season for new shows continued with ABC showcasing its newest show last Tuesday, The Muppets.

The pilot episode definitely reached up to its expectations and beyond. The show stars all the famous Muppets, including Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, Scooter, Animal and all your favorite characters. In many ways, the Muppets was very similar to “The Office.”

The Muppets, which were making their small-screen debut, also featured some stars like Dancing with the Stars host, Tom Bergeron, and actress Elizabeth Banks.

This first episode presented the Muppets as staff members of a show known as “Up Late with Miss Piggy”, which is hosted by Kermit’s ex-girlfriend. “Up Late with Miss Piggy” had some similarities with the show “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” like Miss Piggy coming out of a big stage curtain with a band playing the introduction music.

Kermit wanted to get Elizabeth Banks on the show, but Miss Piggy wasn’t going to let that happen. The reason

why is because of Kermit’s and Miss Piggy’s breakup. The once-viral video was shown during the show featuring the shocking breakup at a movie theater after watching Pitch Perfect 2. The movie theater had a banner of Elizabeth Banks for being nominated for an Emmy award, which made Miss Piggy aggravated.

During the show, everyone finally got to meet the new girlfriend, Denise, who is also a pig. That just goes to show you that Kermit has a thing for pigs.

After having to cancel Elizabeth Banks Miss Piggy’s show, Scooter had one simple task: to invite a dancer from Dancing with the Stars. Instead, he brought the host, Tom Bergeron. After talking with Bergeron, Kermit finally stepped up to his ex-girlfriend and got Banks on the show.

The former couple got together to talk about it and finally agreed to put Banks on the show with everyone’s favorites critics Statler and Waldorf in the audience.

The Muppets will air every Tuesday this Fall on ABC at 8:00 p.m. and on demand at www.abc.com. If you are a fan of “The Office,” this is a show you have to see.

Guess the Mysterious ‘Blindspot’ shows up on NBC Movie Quote!

NBC premiered another promising new show that’s sure to eat up the time I should be spending on homework.

Their new show, “Blindspot”, has certainly drawn in an audience with its intriguing mysteries and unique premise.

It commanded the ratings and, certainly, my attention.

“Blindspot” is about an amnesiac woman (played

by Jamie Alexander) who is found covered in fresh tattoos in a bag in Times Square. These intricate tattoos include the name of FBI agent Kurt Weller (played by Sullivan Stapleton). With no memory of who she is, Jane Doe and the FBI race to decipher the strange mystery of the tattoos which could lead to terrorist attack.

Jamie Alexander was fantastic in the role of Jane!

Her character has this angry strength that slowly grows throughout the episode, but the absolute feeling of loss that she conveys, those brief moments of vulnerability and grievance is what really won me over and drew me into her plight.

The chemistry between Alexandar and Sullivan Stapleton practically leapt off the screen. Though Alexandar’s amazing acting certainly stole the show, Stapleton did fairly well holding his own. His inner struggle over empathy for Jane and distrust could easily be seen in his guarded interactions with her and the small moments where he gave in and comforted her. I’m hoping, though, that his character will develop more as the series continues.

Speaking of developing as the series continues, the pilot was incredibly slow paced with very limited looks into the characters or setting. I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt though since it is the pilot and the episode was littered with moments of pure action gold, hinting at a fast paced future.

Overall the episode was a really strong start to what seems like an interesting show. The incredible mystery of the premise alone makes it well worth the watch to me. Who is this woman? What’s with the tattoos? What’s with the bearded dude creeping about?

Local artist opens show at the Station Gallery Joanna Harlow Reporter ejh1498@lhup.edu Karl Leitzel, an artist and musician from Millheim, PA, visited Clinton County Arts Council’s Station Gallery in Lock Haven on Friday September 18, for his gallery opening. Leitzel is managing partner and Resident Artist at The Green Drake Gallery in Millheim.

The opening last Friday was a light-hearted event, with Karl singing and playing guitar and harmonica while his audience clapped along or strolled around the gallery observing the artwork. The work will remain in the Station Gallery until October 11.

The paintings are in both acrylic and oil, depicting a variety of familiar subjects. Leitzel explained that he does not limit himself to just one subject. Some of the works displayed are pink-hued, dusky landscapes with birch trees rising through them, filtering the light. His other, smaller landscape works also have a strong sense of dappled light covering various pastoral scenes.

Leitzel’s acrylic work has a vibrant textural quality, which he says he achieves through the paint’s fast drying properties. His representation of egrets in acrylic have colorful splashes about their feathers, though, the viewer

‘Amazônia’ coming to Sloan Mary Jones A&E Editor mej102@lhup.edu Every month, the Department of Visual and Performing Arts features a different artist in the John Sloan Fine Arts Center Gallery. This month will feature Bob Nugent with his exhibition called “Amazônia: The History of Nature”.

Opening on Monday, September 28 starting at six at night, Nugent will talk to the students about his art. According to Professor Jason Bronner, an art professor here at Lock Haven University, “he’s also going to talk with the students about the practice of being an artist. The business end of being an artist.” Bronner goes on to explain that to make a living as an artist, you have to be able to market yourself as well as being a visual artist.

The Art Department makes an effort to choose a variety of artists, and Bob Nugent is no exception. Bronner feels that “it would be good exposure for the students to see what can be done with different kinds of tools.” Not only this, but Nugent’s works are on an impressive scale. Most drawings and other two dimensional pieces of art are about 18 by 24 inches, but one of his works that he’s bringing is about 10 feet wide.

You don’t have to be an art major to enjoy this art exhibition. Nugent’s work is different, because he deals with the flowers and animals of the Amazon jungle. This allows the viewers of his art to learn more about this part of our world in an aesthetically pleasing way.

“Amazônia: The History of Nature” will open in the John Sloan Fine Arts Center Gallery on September 28 at six, and will be open and free to the public from then until October 23, Monday through Friday, 8 am until 9 pm. can still read them as white birds. The sense of light is especially strong in these paintings where the birds look as if the light source is shining through the outer layers of their feathers.

Two of the paintings that Leitzel shared related to Edgar Allen Poe. Leitzel explained that these paintings were part of a performance of Poe’s “The Raven”. Instead of a prop, Leitzel recited the poem to the eerie rendering of the bird perched on the shoulder of a classical bust. The other painting is of Poe himself, based on the daguerreotypes taken of Poe in life. The most striking paintings at the show were also the most intimate.

Leitzel’s from-life portraits of musicians performing in Millheim capture the soft and poignant atmosphere of an intimate music venue. The subjects are close acquaintances of Leitzel’s and it shows in the work.

The framing and the movement in the paintings suggest a certain level of comfort with the subjects, and familiarity with their movement and style.

Leitzel’s palette and the glowing light he uses to define his subjects tied the show together. Beyond these qualities, there is no cohesive message that the viewer can take from the show. In this case, form outweighs content; Leitzel’s works are of a high professional quality, and do not concern social or political issues. The paintings are enjoyable to look at and they convey a comforting pride in place, in friends, and in nature.

This week, we will visit a small island city-nation in the southernmost part of the Asian continent. Singapore is a modern, booming city that is an independent nation in its own right after being expelled from Malaysia in the 1960s. Also known as the Lion City, because in Malay “singa” means lion and “pura” means city; however no lions have ever lived on these islands.

Apart from Malay, there are numerous other languages spoken in Singapore including English and Mandarin Chinese but also, however not as common, Tamil is the fourth official language.

There is very little chance you will get bored in this busy megalopolis. Apart from Monaco, Singapore is the most densely populated country in the world with 6,430 people per square kilometer. Singapore is famed for its beautiful skyline comprised of financial buildings, luxury hotels, dinging options and many renowned

brand shops.

The Lion City roars at night with its shining lights and exuberant nightlife.

The world’s first night zoo, The Night Safari, is located in Singapore. Recently, this city-state hosted a Formula 1 Race at night using approximately 1500 light fixtures. Marina Bay Sands casino and hotel is the most luxurious place to get a view and feel for Singapore at night. At the top of the three towers that make up the complex is the Sky Park where there are restaurants, nightclubs, gardens, and the most astonishing feature, a 500-foot long swimming pool with a vanishing edge.

Other attractions in Singapore include Universal Studios Park, the Singapore Flyer (a massive Ferris wheel overlooking marina bay harbor), Underwater World and its many gardens like the Gardens by the Bay complex.

It may be one of the smallest countries on Earth but Singapore, a former English colony, brings eastern and western cultures together. The beautiful skyline will capture your heart and you will never let go of the vibrant Lion City.

To make or not to make your bed?

There are two kinds of people in this world: those that make their bed and those that don’t. Those that make their beds have had this habit instilled in them by moms everywhere. Those that don’t make their beds….well, I don’t know what happened. I make my bed every morning.

Although I love crawling in between the flat, smooth blankets, I know some, like my roommates, hate that and prefer to cocoon themselves in freethrown blankets on their beds. Some like having all the sheets on but just hate to make the bed at all. And there are pros and cons to each side of this battle: to make or not to make the bed.

3. It distresses you and gives you a positive mind set.

Completing a mindless task that requires very little effort is a simple way to help you slowly wake up and get moving while also keeping your brain in the fuzzy recesses of sleep for just a moment longer. It also de-clutters your space. Less clutter equals less stress.

The pros of taking the extra minute to make the bed every morning.

1. It’s a simple habit that creates other beneficial habits.

When you take that extra minute to quickly straighten out probably the biggest thing in your room, picking up a few straw clothes will probably be an impulse action. Not only does it help you create habits of cleaning your room, it might give you the mind set to organize the rest of your life too.

The pro of not making your bed: 1. Less bugs.

At any given time, our beds have over 1.5 million microscopic insects called dust mites living in them. They thrive on the skin cells and the warm, damp atmosphere of our sheets. At night, we sweat. We sweat a lot: almost a liter a night for some people. And when we make the bed, this moisture, skin cells and heat get trapped under the blankets and the little bugs have a party and make babies. Lot and lots of babies. If we don’t make our beds, the moisture is removed from the sheets and mattress and the bugs will dry out and eventually die.

2. Less allergies.

Some people are allergic to the dust mites and their poop so it might be beneficial to try out keeping your bed messy so a while to see if they’re the cause of your allergies.

2. It gives you a feeling of accomplishment.

If the first thing you do in the morning is make your bed, well then hey, look at this task you’ve already completed. Start your day right by being productive and maybe the rest of your day will stay that way as well. Leaving your bed messy may stunt your productivity

So the decision stands: to make you bed and keep yourself positive and organized, or don’t make your bed and avoid the bugs that love to sleep with you? I, myself, will probably keep making my bed. The bugs haven’t killed me yet so why not keep a positive mind about me and make some bugs I didn’t even know were there happy as well.

It is much easier on us to simply look up, or set up, reminders for important events such as birthdays, appointments or class schedules. The ease of access is mind boggling when you think about it.

We are able to plan our lives out with constant reminders on smartphones, laptops, desktops and tablets. It has never been less necessary to remember information than it is right now. Before we get too excited about this, it may have a downside: the loss of ability to remember information the way we have for centuries.

It appears that with technology remembering the information for us, we retain less and less of it. Researchers like Saima Noreen of the University of London believe this “digital amnesia” is directly connected to our reliance on nontraditional methods of remembering information. Where we once wrote notes to ourselves, we now set alarms and alerts on a multitude of devices.

Is the human memory changing?

information as well, or at all. We tend not to remember phone numbers now as our phones list them under a person’s name or picture. Can you recall your brother’s, sister’s, parents’ or significant other’s phone number right now?

No? Don’t worry, research shows that between 71% and 91% of us can’t either.

Before we lament the loss of our memories and ability to recall important information, there also appears to be an upside to the abundant use of technology. This same research has also lead scientists to believe that our memories are becoming more like a transactive memory. Transactive memories are almost like a group mind. We use the Internet and computers as an extension of our personal memories because we understand that just because we don’t know something, there is someone out there that does. We also know that we have access to all this information in an instant so there is less of a need to remember huge amounts of data.

The best way to think about it is like an evolution of memory storage both personal and technological. There was a time when we needed the oral tradition to recall our history but then the written word was created and that lead to books. Now, we have digital information available at the touch of a button that is replacing the physical need for written reminders and paper information. Whether this is going to be good or bad for us in the long run is still up in the air. All we know for sure is that we don’t remember things the same as we once did.

Having just graduated from Lock Haven University in December 2014, there has been a running joke in my family that I will forever be taking classes; their lifelong student as it were. And who can blame them? I’ve been in school since I was five years and 10 months old, with only a year sabbatical between high school and my undergraduate degree, and I still have one year left for my master’s degree.

Moving from school to school, apartment to apartment, staying for a few months with my parents before I had to move on to the next program and new student accommodations has taught me several things: 1. Life doesn’t have pause buttons.

Everyone talks about how excited they are about their lives starting as soon as they graduate. Little tip; life keeps rolling. Enjoy it. Just because you don’t have that house you are building on Pinterest doesn’t mean your life hasn’t started. Those trips to the coffee shop and the inside jokes at your part-time or summer job are all bits of life. Collect them. Keep them to look back on when you have that 9-5 and two screaming kids.

2. You will never know EXACTLY what you want to be when you grow up.

Ever since I understood the concept of having a profession, I wanted to be everything from Sailor Moon to a beautician. That changed about twice every week when I was in grade school. With eleven months left until I can finally enter my chosen profession with the needed degree, I still have no idea what I want to be when I grow up. And I’m okay with that. Maybe I’ll moonlight on weekends as a Princess Leia look-a-like. Just to keep it interesting.

3. You are always learning.

I guess I get the last laugh when it comes to my family saying I’m a lifelong student. You never stop learning. Never. I just moved to Scotland for my masters degree and have had to learn how to navigate the British world of real estate, renting a bike from those automated bike stands and how to get the plumber to come to the apartment within a decent amount of time so that I have hot water.

Life after graduating is great, minus preparing for graduate school if that is your path, but if you can at least remember these three things, life after school will be a bit more gracious.

Study Abroad Stories: Liverpool, England Kayla Borges Guest Writer ksb6501@lhup.edu Where to even begin… there are so many stories I could write about.

So many memories I could describe that it would take up too many pages.

I could write about my weekend walking the streets of London, or my days spent bicycling over the bridges in Amsterdam, or even visiting the lively pubs of Ireland. My study abroad experience in Liverpool, England is one I will never forget.

One of my favorite memories of my time abroad took place on the third Thursday of November also known as Thanksgiving. This holiday is specific to the United States, since it celebrates the Pilgrim’s arrival to their newly found home. Thanksgiving has always been a holiday that represents everything I am thankful for, especially my family. Every year since I was young, I have spent Thanksgiving at home surrounded by my entire family; so when the holiday came around, I became slightly homesick.

As the holiday grew near, our resident tutors, Martin, Danny and Lauren, announced that they would be hosting a special Thanksgiving event for the American students. They told us they knew how important the holiday was and that they wanted to celebrate as well! We all agreed to make a favorite dish

to share.

When Thanksgiving Day came, I panicked, realizing I hadn’t bought the ingredients to make my dish I planned to share which, of course, was pumpkin pie. What is Thanksgiving without pumpkin pie?! That morning, I took a trip to Tesco, similar to Walmart, in search of pumpkin, evaporated milk and pie crust. Unfortunately, I left the store empty handed. No one told me that pumpkin was only sold one time a year in England! I was so upset. But I went with my plan B and made some cinnamon spice cupcakes.

That evening, we all dressed up, gathered our dishes and headed to Martin and Danny’s flat. As soon as we entered the building, the delicious smells of traditional Thanksgiving food filled our noses. They went all out to make our Thanksgiving in England special! They went to three different meat places in Liverpool just to find a turkey big enough for all of us. They made mashed potatoes, stuffing and even corn! Before we ate we all went around the table naming one thing we were thankful for. When it came to me all I could say was how thankful I was for that night and the lengths they went through to make it so special. My Thanksgiving in England will always be one of my favorite holiday memories!

Play the hand you were dealt Jade Nelson jvn7450@lhup.edu Opinion Editor A little while back, I was asked to show my hands to a sweet, but rather inquisitive man at work. When he looked them over, wrinkled from sanitation water and stained from someone's cottage cheese and apple butter, he said, "You're not married." I couldn't tell if he was asking or exclaiming, but regardless I replied with, "No, sir!"

He looked me over and asked, "No kids either?" to which I replied again, "No, sir," but this time added, "I'm nineteen."

He continued to stare until a big goofy grin crept across his face and he replied, "So? What does it matter how old you are? You could be married at nineteen. You could be a lot of things at nineteen."

Later, during the same evening, a gentleman and his wife grilled me with questions about my life outside of work: Do you go to school? Is that a far drive? What are you going for?

After waiting tables for some time, I've gotten used to these questions. Actually, I have it down.

"I commute to Lock Haven; it's not a bad drive but it can be tiring after a long day, and well, I wanted to be a PA but now I'm majoring in English; no, I

don't want to teach, and no, I have no idea what I'm going to do for the rest of my life."

Conversations don't always go quite like that, but you get the idea. Sometimes I'll get the, "Oh wow, that's a big switch!" response, and other times they'll smile and warmly say, "I wish you the best of luck." This time though, the gentleman said, "So? You're young. That's okay if you don't have it figured out yet. Ya got time."

I smiled back, filled his glass and replied, "Absolutely."

Loads of pressure is placed on young adults today. If you don't have your life figured out, well, how typical of you, you irresponsible, underagedrinking, college goober.

I've been mentally and emotionally beating myself up a lot these days. I've lost many "friendships" and cut many more ties with a lot of people who once meant something to me.

I changed my major and went from having a cookie-cutter image of my future to accepting the (usually) sad looks people give when I can admit that I'm an English major with a concentration in writing, yet I still have absolutely zero idea of where I'll be in two years after I take off my silly black cap and gown.

I am not financially set to move out and start living on my own, and I cringe at having to man

up and pay $60 for a synthetic-oil change when I equally cringe at spending $.90 for a donut. All the stress and anxiety that's caused me to do nothing but break out has left me with one important realization: I am growing, and that's okay.

Life is a game of trial and error. In the end, whenever that may be, my trials and errors will form a picture far more beautiful than I could have ever imagined at 9 and 19. Here I am, with just as much potential as anyone else, concerned about my future because I don't have the answers. If only I knew what God has planned.

The man in the dish room and the man making friendly dinner conversation opened my eyes to something I already know, but often forget: I have all the time in the world to get it together and I can do or be whatever it is that will fulfill my soul, speak to my heart and enrich my mind.

Some day, my relationships, both casual and intimate, career, finances and everything else under the sun, will somehow intertwine with each other when I least expect it. God will look down on me laughing and think, "That silly girl. She should've let me take control sooner."

Until then, I choose to let go and let God while I embrace my beautifully chaotic life, one day at a time.

Missing Stewart: the voice of comedic truth Connor Poorman cmp7673@lhup.edu Staff Writer Jon Stewart undoubtedly had the one of the biggest impacts on my own political views growing up alongside Steven Colbert and more presently John Oliver. Stewart knew how to be extremely funny but most importantly, he made absolute sense at the same time.

Stewart picked a good time to retire though, and he is certainly missed by many—me included. Of course, Stewart isn’t dead or anything—he still makes his appearances now and again, especially at the Emmys.

He definitely deserved the award for best outstanding variety talk series and his political views. He spoke a comical truth when he said that if Trump was ever elected as president, he, “would consider getting in a rocket and going to another planet. Because clearly this planet has gone bonkers.” I don’t think I could have ever said it any better myself.

Jon would always talk about the smaller issues that politicians seemed to gloss over or the major ones that were distorted from the mess of mass media.

It was always refreshing to watch him crack so many wise jokes about an important issue and then suddenly, in a gut wrenching way, talk about the reality of the issue.

After covering serious ground, he would probably continue to crack jokes about how a politician or a media center covered said issue.

Stewart did not regret leaving the comedy/political scene. He had such a career from 1999 to 2015 and I guess it had its fun. The media, encompassing many different television stations, really didn’t take him seriously either and that’s a shame.

Stewart stepped on the media’s toes as well. When he did, there was a backlash at times—but it was dust under the rug not too long after. I would think after years of inconsistent coverage from the media, that he wouldn’t have had much of an opinion over what they said anyway; I would have probably retired too. Maybe Jon is just tired in general.

Either statement is good enough for me, but I’ll always remember and appreciate him as a man of chuckles and a man of competence. After all, if Trump wins, I might have to join him on that rocket because I sure am not sticking around for that carnival.

Chip Kelly’s trust is crumbling Jayson Moyer Sports Editor jpm362@lhup.edu Two years ago in Chip Kelly’s first season as Philadelphia Eagles head coach, one word was vastly used to describe him: innovator.

His fast paced, no huddle offense was something that the NFL had hardly seen.

Two years later on September 23, 2015, the term innovator to describe Chip is now followed by a giant question mark as the Eagles have gotten off to a 0-2 start in 2015.

Chip won his power-play against former Eagles general manager, Howie Roseman, in the offseason, as Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie gave Chip total control of the entire roster.

In and out players came and went. All-time leading rusher in Eagles history was thrown out the door, as were Jeremy Maclin, probowl guards Evan Mathis and Todd Herremans, and quarterback Nick Foles.

In came high priced cornerback Byron Maxwell, quarterback Sam Badford, linebacker Kiko Alonso and a pair of running backs including Ryan Matthews and the NFL’s leading rusher last season, DeMarco

Murray.

Chip’s theory: creating a culture where players buy into your system will outdo talent.

Not so fast, Chipper.

The Eagles lost week one at the Falcons. The offense was stagnant for most of the game. So I said we should all take a deep breath and move on to beating the Cowboys in the home opener week two.

And as 7:45p.m rolled around on Sunday night, it felt as though the sky was falling.

There are losses that sting and there are losses that linger. There are losses that question this strange obsession and tell us mercifully to get a life. But Sunday’s loss to the Cowboys may have been the worst.

Any way, you could have spent your Sunday afternoon would have been better than watching this disgruntled performance from the Eagles as everything that could have gone wrong, did go wrong.

Three hours of having my fingers slammed in a car door? Sign me up.

After watching that performance on Sunday, it simply brings up the question: Is Chip Kelly a false Messiah?

The scheme doesn’t translate effectively into the NFL anymore.

Teams know exactly what the Eagles

are going to run. Continuous runs out of the shotgun with the inability to adjust and put Bradford under center and run the ball straight up the gut.

Having seven rushing yards in a game is purely unacceptable. Week one was not much better. And this was supposed to be the three-headed monster backfield that was supposed to run all over any team.

So far, that hasn’t been the case.

It is time to get back to basics. It’s time to put Bradford under center and pound the ball in between the tackles in an effort to get Murray going.

No more of these sweep plays. No more of this zone-blocking scheme.

Pound the ball down the throats of the defense.

But what are the odds of Chip adjusting his offense to better serve his quarterback and running backs?

Slim to none. I will believe it when I see it.

This is what separates the good coaches from the great coaches. The ability to adjust, evolve and change things up. Bill Belichick is great because week-to-week, you never know what the Patriots are going to throw at you.

With all of the film available now, the Eagles offense is easier to pick up

than a dropped cell phone.

On Sunday, a 13-0 deficit the Eagles faced against the Cowboys seemed insurmountable.

Think about that for a second: a 13-0 deficit to a Chip Kelly coached team seemed insurmountable.

And that is why this week is the biggest week of Chip Kelly’s coaching career.

Traveling to New York to face a 2-0 Jets team that has forced ten turnovers in two games—without Kiko Alonso, Cedric Thornton and probably not Mychal Kendricks— yikes.

Chip has my trust for this week and, if Sunday is more of the same of the team that is 0-2 this season, Chip can take his culture concept and put it in a blender.

Time to throw your huge ego out the window, Chip, because this town needs to win.

At best, Chip could be a brilliant football mind and we are the ones that are all crazy.

Or, he could be a great college coach, with his GM title standing for: grossly miscalculated.

Meet new athletic director Dr. Tom Gioglio Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu

Division I; they are doing the right things for Lock Haven University.

AW: What are your expectations for the program this year?

The Lock Haven University athletic department has changed a little bit, but the biggest change is the new guy in charge.

Dr. Tom Gioglio has accepted the athletic director position and is excited to take over. Gioglio has high expectations for the program.

Before coming to Lock Haven, Gioglio has spent 11 years in the athletic department at East Stroudsburg University. Here is the Q&A from my sit down with the new athletic director.

Alex Wahl: How do you like the Haven so far?

Dr. Tom Gioglio: I love the Haven. I’m very excited to be here. We had a great kickoff welcoming celebration a couple of weeks ago. It’s very exciting meeting a lot of people. May be suffering from information overload, but I’m enjoying it at this point.

Dr. Gioglio: I want to make sure that we provide the student athletes a safe and positive environment. The coaches ensured me that they will teach and give them their expertise and help the student athlete advance not only on the field, but also in the classroom.

AW: If you were to change one thing about the athletic department, what would it be? Why?

“I want to make sure that we provide the student athletes a safe and positive environment.”

AW: What position were you at East Stroudsburg?

Dr. Gioglio: I was the director of athletics. I served at that position for 11 years and when the opportunity came to apply to the LHU position, I thought “Wow, what a great opportunity for me.” I actually believed it was a career promotion for me because we have division 1 wrestling and field hockey here with high quality coaches that support the student athletes’ dreams and make sure they take care of business in the classroom and athletes graduating, which is very important to me.

Dr. Gioglio: They are doing very well so far. Our football coach, Dave Taynor, has only been here for a short time and it will take some time for him to get the program moving in the right direction, but we have the right man with high energy and very knowledgeable; he is a great addition to this university. Our field hockey coach, Pat Rudy, is off to an unbelievable start.

We couldn’t have asked for a better coach for field hockey. The soccer teams have a long tradition of success here and they are looking to do great things as the conference season approaches.

AW: Which sport are you most looking forward to this season?

AW: How does it feel to be in charge of many Division II programs and two division 1 programs?

Dr. Gioglio: It’s great to be a part of 16 Division II programs and two Division I programs. That was part of the attraction for me. Coach Rudy and Coach Moore do excellent jobs for the sports that they coach and the other coaches do a fantastic job. It’s just exciting whether they are Division II or

AW: When you got the call that you were accepted as the athletic director at Lock Haven, what was your reaction?

Dr. Gioglio: Excitement. I was overjoyed.

AW: What is your favorite part of Lock Haven so far?

Dr. Gioglio: The people. I may have only been here for a short time, but the environment, the community, the faculty, and the staff has been exceptional. I look forward to meeting new people and getting more involved with the community.

AW: I’ve seen you at the events these last couple of weeks. What do you think of the overall experience so far?

Dr. Gioglio: I really don’t have a favorite sport.

Dr. Gioglio: We would like a $20 million donor to come up from hiding and help us with our program.

Dr. Gioglio received his doctorate in higher administration at West Virginia University in 1993. He then went on to earn a second masters degree in secondary education from Northern State University in 1996.

The Lock Haven University field hockey team picked up its seventh win of the year with a home victory over the Georgetown Hoyas this past Saturday in a non-conference game.

The team got out to a hot start as Rachel Valentine scored her sixth and seventh goal of the season just eight minutes into the first half.

The first goal was scored on a crossing-pass from teammate Tamia Roach. The pair of teammates would hook up again for Valentine’s second goal just 48 seconds later.

The Hoyas would not go without a fight though, as a goal from Megan Parsons snuck into the far post with just under 20 minutes remaining in the half.

Although once the second half started, it was all LHU from there. Not even six minutes into the second half, Noelle Kephart scored her first goal of the season to give LHU a 3-1 lead.

Lydia George would put the icing on the cake with her second goal of the season to give LHU a 4-1 lead. The win put LHU’s record at 7-1 for the season.

However, on Wednesday, the team fell at St. Joseph’s 3-2 in overtime. Their record now stands at 7-2 heading into their next game at La Salle on Friday, Sept. 25.

Week four preview: vs. East Stroudsburg Jayson Moyer Sports Editor jpm362@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University football team dropped its third straight game of the season in as many tries on Saturday, falling at IUP 38-13.

Lock Haven (0-3) put the first points on the board on Saturday, as senior kicker Alex Boumerhi nailed a 34 yard field goal to cap a nine play, 34 yard drive, giving the Bald Eagles a 3-0 lead.

Boumerhi is 3-3 on field goal attempts this season, with his long being that 34 yarder.

That would be the only lead Lock Haven would be able to muster for the rest of the game, though, as IUP (2-0) outscored the Eagles 38-10 for the final three quarters. Lock Haven has been outscored 105-36 in three games this year.

IUP tied the game in the second quarter with a 22 yard field goal, and then Drew Harris rattled off a 22 yard touchdown run to put IUP up 10-3. Harris had 17 carries for 109 yards and a touchdown.

With the score 10-3 at the beginning of the third quarter, Lenny Williams capped off a 10 play, 75 yard drive for IUP with a seven yard touchdown run. Williams had 10 carries for 65 yards and a touchdown while also completing 5-13 passes for 44 yards and an interception.

A little over a minute later, Dorian Lane picked off a pass from Lock Haven quarterback Caleb Walton and returned it 19 yards for a touchdown, giving IUP a 24-3 lead.

The Bald Eagles put together a decent drive of 10 plays, 67 yards in 2:39 following Walton’s interception that ended with a 24 yard field goal from Boumerhi, making it 24-6 in favor of IUP. Early in the fourth quarter, IUP ended their own 67 yard drive, running 13 plays, with a two yard run from Luigi Lista-Brinza, putting IUP up 25. Lista-Brinza carried the ball 14 times for 85 yards and a touchdown.

Lock Haven scored their lone touchdown on a 27 yard pass from Walton to junior transfer Dan Krupko, making it 31-13.

IUP put the icing on the cake late with under a minute to go in the fourth quarter, as Shannon Jackson scored from two yards out to make it 3813. Jackson was the fourth different IUP player to score a rushing touchdown on the day. He had four carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.

IUP put together an impressive game on the ground for the second straight week, with 372 yards on 53 total attempts as a team, averaging seven yards per carry and scoring four touchdowns.

Lock Haven’s leading rusher was senior Beau Swales, carrying the ball 15 times for 78 yards. It was Swales’ first game carrying the ball more than

10 times this season, and his first game topping 50 yards. The Eagles averaged 3.8 yards per carry.

Shawn Seif had two carries for 21 yards and caught five passes for 28 yards. The redshirt junior now has 16 receptions for 162 yards and two touchdowns in three games this season.

Walton completed 18-35 passes for 165 yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. He also had 11 carries for 13 yards.

Lock Haven welcomes East Stroudsburg to Hubert Jack Stadium on Saturday for their second home game of the year after two straight away games.

East Stroudsburg sits at 1-2 on the season, losing 41-40 to LIU Post week one, 34-9 to Slippery Rock, but is coming off a 56-12 rout of Edinboro on Saturday.

East Stroudsburg is averaging 473 yards of total offense per game, but giving up 496 yards of total offense per game as well. They average 340 passing yards per game and 133 yards per game on the ground.

Also, they give up 260 rushing yards per game, so this could be a great time for Lock Haven to jumpstart their rushing game and get the offense moving.

Kickoff is scheduled for 12p.m. on Saturday at Hubert Jack Stadium. The forecast looks great, with a high of 75 and partly cloudy skies.
