Hidden health crisis on college campuses Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu Eating disorders are known as a hidden health crisis on campuses and affect millions of students. Chances are someone you know is dealing with one.

According to anad.org, 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from eating disorders, such as anorexia, bulimia, or binge eating. This week (Feb. 2127) is National Eating Disorder Awareness week and it is important to know the facts of these terrible diseases.

Eating disorders affect people of all ages, but have become a serious problem on college campuses everywhere. According to anad.org, 91 percent of women they surveyed from a college campus had attempted to control their weight through dieting Eating disorders have the highest mortality rate of any mental disorder and, of those with eating disorders, 50 percent meet the criteria for depression, according to anad.org.

Andrea Cheatle, a sophomore attending Penn State University has been dealing with an eating disorder since the 10 grade.

Cheatle states that she always had bad eating habits, but, by the end of her sophomore year in high school, she started to drastically lose weight and that’s when it became very serious.

“I knew I had a problem and knew it wasn’t normal, I just didn’t want to tell anyone because I didn’t want anyone to tell me to stop. I thought that by the time anyone noticed I had a problem, I would be gone,” said Cheatle.

In the summer of 2012, Cheatle’s mom started to notice her weight loss and mentioned it to her. “My mom and I fought a lot that summer because I wouldn’t admit to anyone that I had a problem; I couldn’t admit it,” she stated.

Back in October of 2015, Cheatle dropped out of her first semester at Penn State and spent four weeks at The Renfrew Center in Philadelphia, where they specialize in helping those who are dealing with an eating disorder.

“Being there was really eye opening for me, every

morning we had to get blood taken and get our heart rate checked and when I noticed that my heart rate was so low it really made me more aware of what I was doing to my body.” said Cheatle.

At Renfrew, they have therapy groups with others who are going through the same thing as well as family therapy groups where family members can come and talk with you about what is going on.

Cheatle said, “I still keep in touch with all the girls I met when I was there. It is great support to talk to someone who is going through the same thing as you and it lets you know you’re not alone.”

There is a very likely chance that one of your loved ones, whether it be a parent, a sibling, a friend or a significant other, has an eating disorder. If you want to know what you can do to help them just be supportive and be there for them.

“My friends were very supportive when I told them, but they were also scared because they knew they couldn’t help or do anything, which made it frustrating for both of us because they can’t fix it, I just needed them to be there for me,” said Cheatle.

Cheatle has been dealing with this by surrounding herself with only positivity and she cuts out anything bringing her down immediately, mentioning the fact that it took her a very long time to start doing this. She has also, just recently, tried to be more open with people about everything and reaching out to others.

To those who are struggling with an eating disorder, or don’t know if they have one or not, Cheatle says “Reach out to somebody you trust. Don’t isolate yourself because it will only make you worse. Knowing you have people around you is the most important thing.”

Week in Review: February 18 - February 24 Oscars 2016

With the Oscars on the horizon, much controversy has arisen. With many people outraged that the Oscar pool was #sowhite, this comes in the ongoing Black Lives Matter protests and much racial and gender disputes rising. The Oscars, in its 87 year history has been 94% white and 76% men.

However, Will Smith, who is at the forefront of this said people need to stop the mentality of “us and them” and rather embrace diversity for what makes America so great. Many people have waged in on this and it has created another boycott. With many black celebrities sitting out the Oscars, the diversity on the red carpet has plummeted. The Oscars will still go on this Sunday February 28.

The Apple Backdoor So a backdoor, is a simple unguarded way to get into a secured system (by a password). The FBI and Apple have waged a public war over access to the iPhone used by the San Bernardino shooter, who killed 14 people in December of 2015. The war is waged over the fact that the FBI does not know the passcode into the phone, and run the risk of erasing all the data. They are not asking Apple to open it because Apple can’t, they don’t know the password either and due to encryption services that run on iOS8 or later. Rather, the FBI is asking Apple to disable certain features which will help the FBI agents unlock the iPhone.

IMF urges G20 to take Bold Actions The global economy has been experiencing much turbulence, especially in advanced economies such as the US and China. This has been due to the problems in advanced economies, a slowdown in China’s economy, and the drops in oil prices. These problems could force the IMF to advocate broad measures similar to those enacted in 1985 to stabilize the currency markets by weakening the dollar. However, this can also be viewed as a normal occurrence in markets which go through growth periods and recessional periods.

Climate change is negatively impacting other countries

Climate change has been studied in depth by many universities, but in a first of its kind study Rutgers University has studied the shift of resources due to climate change. Rutgers has found that poor countries are getting poorer and rich countries are getting richer. They found that fish are being pushed closer to polar countries by climate change, which tend to be richer, and away from equatorial countries which tend to be poorer. It’s not just the ocean either. Wealthier countries also tend to have stronger regulatory and resource management systems, which allow them to reap benefits and enable them to utilize new technologies and newly available resources.

Presidential Race

Since the beginning of February, Republican candidates and Democratic candidates have been fighting to represent their respective parties. Trump has been the dominant force winning in New Hampshire, South Carolina, and Nevada. Since Iowa, the first primary, 7 candidates have dropped out of the race. While Trump has been leading, Rubio and Cruz have been keeping it interesting, the next Republican primary will be on March 1 in Alabama. On the Democratic side Bernie Sanders and Hilary Clinton have been trading wins with Clinton winning in Iowa, followed by a Sanders win in New Hampshire, which was then followed by a Clinton win in Nevada. With the South Carolina democratic primary on February 27 the Democratic side is still up for grabs.

Logan Marconi shows LHU “The Light of the World” Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu Artist Logan Marconi opened his show “The Light of the World” and gave a lecture about his work on Monday in the Sloan Gallery. Marconi’s oil paintings are created through a process called glazing, which employs multiple layers of thinned paint to achieve the look of depth.

The paintings are dark, which Marconi explained was partially due to the process, but also part of his personal aesthetic.

The artist’s works explore silence, meditation and worship spaces which provide a place for people to reflect and grow spiritually. Suggestions of architecture in the work resemble arches and connote sacred spaces. Marconi was influenced by his pilgrimages to spiritual spaces, which included a Quaker meeting house. These remnants serve as points where the spiritual can touch the tangible world. They also suggest human life, without it being present in the paintings, which allows the viewer to imagine themselves as the lone inhabitant of these intriguing plains.

The space within the paintings is vast and the darkness has great depth. The texture, which is

created by the layering of thinned paint, suggests temporality or something which has been built through many impressions over a long period of time. This adds to the effect of being on hallowed ground.

Silence is a major theme of the work, and Marconi has succeeded in communicating transcendent calm and quietness while keeping the work visually exciting. The paintings are most effective at playing with light and darkness.

The depth of the darkness allows the light to glow on the canvas.

There is an illusion of movement in these lights, some falling like snow, others expanding upward like fire. The pieces have a subdued atmosphere despite the tension that the light and dark elements create. “The Cradle” has the suggestion of a small boat on fire in the middle of a boundless body of water.

Though the event might engender panic in a realistic platform, the painting is hushed. It gives the viewer the feeling of a transcendent moment, perhaps of shock, or joy, or of heightened consciousness in which the manifest world stands still and there is finally time to reflect.

The exhibit will be in Sloan Gallery until March 25.

Categorized as a comedy, the audience is given a rare glimpse into the backstage world of theatre technicians.

Kaszas has been winning competitions such as “The Seattle International Comedy Competition,” the “San Diego Comedy Festival,” “San Diego’s Funniest Person Contest” and “The Rockstar Energy Drink Comedy Throwdown,” Kaszas will be sharing his brand of funny with us tomorrow!

Jayson’s top five sports flicks

This is an interesting topic because there are so many good sports movies. However, there are only a few that are truly great. Here are my top five sports movies of all-time.

1. “Rudy” Whether you despise everything about Notre Dame football or you are a die-hard fan like the Eagle Eye’s sports editor, there is no way that you can come away disappointed after watching “Rudy.” It has held the No. 1 spot in my top sports movies since the first time I watched it at least 10 years ago. “Rudy” tells the true story of a football player who worked hard to fulfill his goal of attending the University of Notre Dame and becoming a Notre Dame football player. It is an absolute must-watch, heartwarming football story.

2. The “Rocky” Series It is impossible to not have any of the “Rocky” movies in my top five.

The fact that I am from Philadelphia probably makes me appreciate them that much more. Sylvester Stallone is the perfect actor to portray this boxer from Philadelphia. It is another intense and suspenseful series of a low-life, no-name sports figure who finds a way to work himself to the top.

3. “Miracle” This is the great American story of the 1980 United States Olympic Hockey Team that went on to win the gold medal in the Olympics and it is unbelievable. Kurt Russell does an amazing job playing Herb Brooks, coach of the 1980 US Olympic Team, in this action filled movie. “Miracle” may very well be the best and most complete sports movie ever. It is a must-see, not just for hockey fans, but any American who loves a good American story.

4. “Fever Pitch” This isn’t the classic true-story sports movie, but baseball and romance go perfect together. The characters Ben and Lindsey, played

by Jimmy Fallon and Drew Barrymore respectively, tells a perfect story of the 2004 World Series Champion Boston Red Sox while connecting that with their own love story. At the minimum, I’ve watched this movie 50 times because I simply can’t get enough of it. You would feel that way, too.

5. “The Rookie” A high school science teacher, Jimmy Morris, throwing 96-plus MPH fastballs, makes it into the MLB. Actor Dennis Quaid takes this combination story of life and baseball to a whole new level. It is the perfect movie for any sports-loving person who works hard on a daily basis.

“The Selection”: A thrilling battle of princesses Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu When you look at “The Selection” series by Kiera Cass, you think it’s going to be another girly novel. While it admittedly is very female-orientated, it is a thrilling couple of books that I devoured way too soon for comfort. I usually stick to adventurous sci-fi books but after much coercion from my roommate and cousin with their glowing reviews (more like raging emotional responses), I finally picked up the first book.

“The Selection” series was described to me as a combination of “The Hunger Games” and “The Bachelor,” which couldn’t be more accurate. It takes place in a dystopian society separated by castes. The lower your caste, the worse off you are in society. The lowest caste, an eight, has the worst jobs, little food, poor homes and generally struggle whereas the highest caste, a one, is the royal family.

“The Selection” is a way for the prince to find a wife with one female chosen from each region, no matter their castes. They are brought to the castle in order to fight for the Prince’s heart, but there’s more behind the selection than you’d expect.

Our protagonist, America, a five in the caste system, is a stubborn character thrown into the selection after having her heart broken by a secret

boyfriend. The love triangle is a struggle in this series throughout all three books and never lets on which direction it might go.

I was hooked after the first couple pages and really loved this series. The only objection I had was that America jumps back and forth between the prince and her ex-boyfriend so often it feels like I’m watching a game of tennis.

America’s emotions are all over the place and, while it does get frustrating at times, the books themselves are amazing and I would recommend them to anyone who likes romance, royalty, rebels and a whole lot of chaos.

Fortunately for us, we get to continue this story in the fourth and fifth books, which are about life after the selection. I think I may have loved the fourth book, “The Heir,” even more than the others and am absolutely dying for the fifth book, “The Crown,” to come out on May 3rd.

And if you love to read side stories of your favorite novels, Cass has written a whole book of them for us as well. “Happily Ever After” (I flinch at how cheesy the title is) is full of different points of views and insights into character’s pasts from “The Selection,” “The Elite” and “The One.” Sadly, it doesn’t include anything from the fourth novel, “The Heir.”

“The Selection” series may not seem like something you’d love to read but when you pick it up, you’ll find yourself unable to stop reading. Soon, it’ll be three days later and you have stayed up until 6 a.m. twice in order to read and finish all the novels. I still don’t really know how it happened, but now I find myself sitting here waiting impatiently for the next one. Stupid cliffhangers.

Student of the Week: A magnificent butterfly Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu Name: Jordan Dykes Year: Senior Major: Graphic and Online Design Upon accidentally whacking this guy in the face with my flying hands and apologizing profusely, I promptly sat him down for an interview. This wildly artistic specimen is a member of the Gay Straight Alliance on campus, where they help to set up events to encourage awareness of LGBTQ students on campus.

Jordan is also a member of the Fine Art Society and helps to set up art shows on campus.

Jordan has two favorite classes: Electronic Art and Life Studies. He enjoys these the most because they let him express his ideas and finds them relaxing. He says they give him peace of mind.

While art brings Jordan peace, he brings the opposite to his friends. They describe him as wild, fun and dorky. He always brings life to the group, or a chaotic kind of fun. Jordan is not only a great friend - he’s friends with everyone. He seems to have an endless amount of social

groups and is obviously a magnificent butterfly.

In his free time, Jordan likes to draw (hence his major), read comic books and watch Disney. He should probably give up on his art dreams and go into drama because his sing-a-longs are Broadway worthy. If he doesn’t follow the suggestion to be a Broadway performer, he’d like to one day present his work in an art gallery. Jordan’s future is still up in the air, but I’m sure he’ll figure it out one day. As for right now, Jordan’s only plan for the future is to own a dog.

If Jordan had a random day off, much like our snow day, he would spend his time sleeping for the majority of the day. He admits that he would like to be able to sleep for 48 hours . . . wouldn’t we all? If he ever did wake up on his day off, he would spend the rest of his time drawing, eating or watching an assortment of TV shows. Some of his current watches are “Supernatural,” “Arrow” and “Supergirl.”

If Jordan had a million dollars, he would retire at twenty-two and travel the world. He would also make donations to a couple charities, especially Mercy for Animals. Not only is Jordan a great friend, he’s also a kind soul and loves easily. He’ll even tell you, “I love you” in Russian because that’s all he knows how to say.

You would be hard pressed to find someone on campus who didn’t have at least one tattoo or didn’t know someone who did. We have more tattoos than any other generation before us, a trend only expected to continue. There has been a lot of research and numerous studies done on why our generation feels the need to decorate our skin, and it all comes down to trying to establish our identity in all of the chaos we see day to day.

We have shifted the idea of a tattoo as a sign of a rebellion into an external symbol of our identity.

For our parents’ generation, it was just a picture on your skin, but our generation wants more. It has become a way for us to express ourselves just the same as the clothes we wear or the music we listen to.

Over 40 percent of our generation has at least one tattoo (Pew Research Center), and most of that 40 percent has more than one. But just because we have tattoos doesn’t make us radicals, in fact, our generation puts a lot of thought into our tattoos. Flash tattoos just on the wall of the tattoo parlor used to be the popular road to take, but not for us. Our generation has even changed the level of art we expect in our tattoos. We want

planned, detailed works of art to a degree that past generations never did. Even just small quotes have more thought and meaning behind them than ever before.

Our generation’s interest in tattoos has led to a shift in the idea that tattoos are a taboo, even in the workplace. With so many of us having tattoos and with that number increasing every day, it is hard for our tattoos to be held against us when competing for jobs. Seventy percent of those with ink get tattoos are small enough to hide from the boss and most of us think of our future employment when we are thinking of where to get our tattoos.

The idea of tattoos being permanent has been drilled into our heads by our parents, and for many of us we plan to look back at our tattoos as we age as reminders of the things we have been through in our lives. But if you do grow to regret your decision, the ability to remove tattoos has become easier for our generation compared to the past. While it is more costly than before (because of the increase in the number of people getting tattoos), and reportedly more painful than getting inked, it is almost instant and you can act like nothing ever happened.

Let’s talk about spring break

Spring break is an exciting time for students.

It’s the week during the semester when we get to sleep in every day and be as lazy as we want to be.

This is also the week to play catch up on school work if you need to. I know I have done plenty of schoolwork over my last three spring breaks here. If you’re not doing homework or sleeping, most of us spend our spring breaks picking up as many shifts at work as possible. I know this year those few extra shifts will help me a lot.

If you don’t want to work or travel, use this week to relax, pick up a hobby or continue projects you had to put aside because of the semester.

Check Pinterest for some cool DIY projects or pick up that book you’ve been meaning to read.

I also know you’re capable of beating an entire video game from start to finish in a week. You even have in your power the ability to binge at

least one show, maybe two if you try hard enough.

If you’re not one of the boring and responsible, spring break is often thought of as the time in college that you should be hitting the beach instead of the books. Beaches are a prime place to visit during spring break because who doesn’t want to leave the cold of Lock Haven and escape to the sunny warm beaches? Even if it’s chillier than you would like, just being at the beach makes everything better.

Normally when you think of beaches for spring break, you think of Florida or Cancun.

These beaches would be awesome to visit but can be pricey. Beaches in Virginia, Maryland or the Carolinas are just as nice. If you want an extravagant spring break, take some advice from a senior and start saving up for it in your freshmen year. Even if you have to sacrifice fun spring break trips in your undergrad years, it would be awesome to have a last trip with your friends before you graduate. Remember that you can save a lot of money by driving rather than flying. If you share shifts, you can get to Florida

in 24 hours, give or take a few.

Now if you want to travel but you don’t want to go to the beach, there are other options as well.

Instead of heading south to the beaches, you can head north to the slopes. For you snow lovers skiing or snowboarding is a possible Spring break trip. Vermont offers pretty great deals when it comes to spring breaking in the north.

If none of these options interests you, one of the most affordable spring break locations is Washington D.C. Here is where you can tour history and politics for a week. This is one of the cheapest possibilities for us college students because you don’t have to fly. It doesn’t take too long to travel there by car or you can take a train, if accessible. Not all spring breaks have to be to the beach.

Wherever you travel, it will be a good time as long as you are surrounded with good company.

If you chose to stay home this spring break, enjoy the time to be lazy, catching up on work or picking up shifts at your job. Have a fantastic spring break no matter what your plans are.

Nerding Out: You reject them and I reject you

Admit it. You loved “Deadpool.” You probably enjoyed “The Dark Knight,” “The Avengers” or “Watchmen” too. Maybe you’ve binge-watched “Daredevil” or “Jessica Jones.” There’s also a decent chance your Sunday nights include “The Walking Dead.”

(Mine sure as hell do.) But guess what?

These movies and shows you love are all based on comic books you’re probably too proud to pick up and read.

The nerd-bashing bullies of grade school are behind us, so why not read comics? After all, they’re the source material for your favorite flicks and television shows. While “Captain America: Civil War” is bound to be an entertaining superhero battle royale, the 2006 “Civil War” comic event featured hundreds of superheroes fighting to the death, not just the dozen or so that will appear in the movie. The riveting “The Walking Dead” ongoing comic is up to issue 151, which luckily provides source material for at least three or four more seasons of the hit TV show (including many of your favorite gruesome death scenes).

Comic books, despite the hokey assumptions that surround them, tell incredibly emotional and indeed action-packed stories of superheroes and everyday people like you and me. Art Spiegelman’s “Maus” and “Maus II” tell the tear-jerking tale of a family torn apart by the chaos of the World War II. Brian K. Vaughn’s “Y: The Last Man” follows the actions of the last remaining man on Earth after a strange plague wipes out everyone with a Y chromosome. These are moving stories that examine human nature: all of our fears, desires and morality.

But comics don’t just work with words; they feature incredible art that can evoke emotion in itself. Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko’s art on series such as “The Fantastic Four” and “Amazing Spider-Man” was so ground breaking that it continues to influence visual storytelling over forty years after their heyday. Steve McNiven is an artist who loves his dark reds, bringing the pain and anger of our beloved Wolverine to an almost tangible level for the invested reader of “Old Man Logan.”

It’s not too late to discover comic books for yourself! I rejected the idea of reading them until college, but now I appreciate the incredible storytelling powers comics have. If you’ve never picked up a good comic before, I ask you to forget the unfounded criticisms and take a chance.

It’s named that because it’s used for peanut butter.

I definitely looked that up. It’s true, I swear.

Step 8: Make ‘em go “Aah, aah, aah.”

We all know the peanut butter and jelly sandwich is a staple for all American childhoods.

But have you really perfected the art of making one? You may have had 18+ years to practice but let me learn you a thing about making a perfect PB&J.

Cut those nasty crusts off if you want. Or just leave them on and not eat them later. Seriously, who likes the crusts?

I was out of bread one day and found myself staring at tortillas as I craved a PB&J and decided to be a typical college student and made due with what I had. I followed all the previous steps but on each half of a tortilla and folded that sucker in half, and then in half again. It was pure magic.

I don’t know if I can go back to regular bread for my PB&J ever again. Try it. I promise you only good things.

Now that you have learned a thing about the proper way to make a PB&J, I send you off with this knowledge as a wiser, more capable human being. Go forth, my children. I have taught you well.

Interesting fact: PB&J sandwiches are not a thing anywhere else in the world. People are literally baffled by the thought of this sandwich.

Step one: Pick your grain

You may like white bread, wheat bread, multigrain bread or gluten-free bread, but that doesn’t matter, you just need two slices of delicious carbohydrates and starch. Got them? Good. Place them on whatever surface you have side-by-side, not one over the other, what’s wrong with you?

Step 2: Get the goods

Choose your favorite kind of jelly; I prefer strawberry. Put that on the table. Next get the true gift from God: peanut butter. (Side-note: Did you know that peanut butter is not really a thing in other countries? It was hard to find in Scotland but I persevered.) Get that jar of deliciousness on the table. Admire it for a second. Okay, you’re good.

Step 3: Get the knife

This is truly a significant step. This utensil will make or break this experience. I disapprove of steak knives for this particular endeavor; it

Dip your kah-nife into God’s nectar and get a good amount. Slap that on your bread. Smooth it real slow, watch as the peanut butter seduces you into a coma. Try to keep it in your pants; the end result is more satisfying. Once you have that bit of sexiness all smoothed out and covering your piece of bread, clean off your knife on the spare slice. Get it all off. We don’t want to mix the two just yet.

Step 6: Jiggly-jelly

Dip away into your jam and smack that right onto your spare piece of bread that now has brown streaks like your toilet after a nice one. Spread that around. Sadly it’s not as seductive.

Step 7: Smack that, give me some more.

Gently place the two halves together. Bam. Omg. It’s amazing. Cut that wonderful piece of goodness in half (I find that cutting diagonally makes it taste better, don’t ask why or how). If you want to go even further, press down on the edges to seal in the goods.

Enjoy your succulent piece of deliciousness.

Savor the flavors as you chew. You deserve this.

Kesha is not a meaningless person Meghan Mausteller Staff Writer mlm6713@lhup.edu Late last week, the New York Supreme Court decided that recording artist Kesha would not be allowed to break her contract with her producer Lukasz “Dr. Luke” Gottwald despite allegations of abuse.

In 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit against Dr. Luke, stating that he had “sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused” her since she signed with his label, Kemosabe Records, when she was 18 years old. Her career is currently “at a standstill” because she refuses to work with Dr. Luke.

Regardless of whether or not Kesha is free to record with other labels, the court decision made it clear that a person’s mental and physical well-being comes second to business when New York Supreme Court Justice, Shirley Kornreich, stated, “You’re asking the court to decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated and typical for the industry.”

Kesha’s accusations against Dr. Luke have nothing to do with weaseling out of a contract; they deal with a woman trying to

regain control of her own life. In fact, accusations that Kesha only wants out of her contract because she “changed her mind” echo the common sentiment that rape allegations occur only after a person regrets a decision made the night before.

The court also stated that “[Kesha’s] vague abuse allegations were devoid of factual detail, and that there was no evidence, whether from doctors or anyone else, to support them,” essentially denying the validity of any reports of abuse.

Rape has nothing to do with sex; it deals exclusively with violence, power, humiliation and, most importantly, the ability to control another person. After enduring these traumatic circumstances for years and going to court to fight against it, Kesha is being told that her abuser is still allowed to wield power over her and her career.

The fact the court sided so overwhelmingly with Dr. Luke exemplifies the still-existing stigmas against abuse, especially sexual assault.

The court’s decision to stand with Dr. Luke is heartbreaking for not only Kesha, but for all abuse survivors. All rape allegations should be taken seriously and no rape survivor should be forced to hold a relationship, business or personal, with their rapist.

Play with effort or don’t play at all Alex Sklar Staff Writer aws1509@lhup.edu If you’re going to play a sport in high school, college or professionally, obviously you have to try to play to the best of your abilities. So why wouldn’t you “try” or put forth your best effort when you are playing in a pickup game with your friends or random people?

It really bothers me when people go and sign up for a team, or come and play a pickup game, and they just stand around and hurt your own team. Why even come and show up if you’re going to do this? It’s a waste of everyone’s time, most importantly your own. Instead of standing around on the court not doing anything, why don’t you go and infuriate other people?

Any sport can be competitive. I don’t play with other people my age just to participate and “stand around.” I play to

win; I play to be upset when we lose. I don’t want to be like you and be useless.

Plays are made during a game; there are numerous plays that occur, good and bad. When you mess up, don’t just sit there and sulk about it. You see it in the NBA all the time. Dwight Howard will miss a shot and go right to the official and pull out his blanket and bottle and cry. Rather than get back on defense, he just sits there and moans about no foul.

NEWSFLASH MISTER HOWARD, the game is still going on.

That’s just as bad as showing up and not giving effort. Sure you could be “Bobby the bench-rider,” but if you come out and give it your all and you give your maximum effort, I respect you. Bobby’s skills aren’t good or he just is plain terrible, but at least he tries. He goes out and competes.

I’d take a whole team of Bobbys before I take a team of Dwights. Taking care of children is a big responsibility.

Don’t judge a person by their appearance Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu When you look at someone, what is the first thing you see or look at? Is it their eyes, clothes, chest, shoes, hands, mouth or something else?

When meeting people, we tend to look at them as a physical object because our first opinion is based on what we see. I wish I could say that my first opinion is on personality, but rarely do we talk to people before physically meeting them face-to-face.

Now, in this first opinion are you complimenting that person or judging them?

Humans are judgmental creatures that tend to tear someone down before getting to know them. This is especially the case in high school and college because people are worried about their reputation and who they are seen with.

This process, however, limits us in our education.

I don’t mean school education but social education.

From a young age we learn from our families that certain people are like this or like that, and these people are good or bad or crazy, so we tend to stay away from those people.

When you get older, you make your own decisions about these people

and they may be the same or different as your family’s opinions, but sometimes people simply ignore social education and stick to what their families have taught them. This is why we still have discrimination because people who don’t like change refuse to see good in people who they were taught not to like.

Ignorance toward change and refusal of social education is making it harder to stop discrimination. So to relate this back to first impressions; when we first meet someone, instead of judging them or discriminating, get to know them.

With how the world is changing, it is important that we change with it instead of fighting it. People should be continually educating themselves on different people and cultures and yet we all like to think we are all there is.

I’m not saying to go get educated on foreign countries, although that is extremely important as well, but first look right here in the United States. Many different people live here and it is important to know the people you live with. We can’t ostracize certain people because they don’t fit our mental depiction of what America should look like because, in all honesty, how can someone decide who does fit? Everyone’s depictions would be different.

Without educating ourselves, we are encouraging discrimination because ignoring it is almost as bad as supporting it.

Second straight year: WBB clinches PSAC playoff spot Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University women’s basketball team clinched their second straight PSAC playoff berth on Wednesday, getting a little help from West Chester, who defeated Kutztown, 87-77.

The Bald Eagles will head to Millersville on Saturday to take on the Marauders at 1:00 p.m.

Lock Haven finished the regular season at 11-15 overall, going 8-14 in conference play. Millersville will head into the postseason at 18-8, finishing conference play at 14-8. Millersville defeated Lock Haven 71-64 in December and completed the sweep with a 61-55 win over Lock Haven earlier this month.

The Haven closed out the regular season with two straight road losses at Shippensburg and East Stroudsburg, respectively.

Lock Haven finished the regular season with three players

in double figure scoring, with senior J.J. Hilliard averaging 10.8 points per game and 4.0 assists per game. Graduate student Rachael McDaniel averages 10.7 points per game for Lock Haven, followed by junior Mackenzie Livingston who averages 10.5.

Senior guard/forward Lysa Mealing leads the nation in rebounds per game at 13.5, including having two games with 20 or more rebounds. In the regular season, Mealing grabbed a total of 323 rebounds, which is a single-season school record.

Mealing has recorded a total of 475 rebounds throughout her career up to this point.

Millersville leads the all-time series with Lock Haven at 35-19.

Swimming wraps solid four days at PSAC Championships Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University swimming team wrapped up a solid four days of competition at the 2016 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.

Leading the way today was Danielle Parowski and Jackie Bingham.

Lock Haven finished 11th overall in the team standings with 75 points.

Day 1 Recap LHU opened the PSAC Championships on Thursday and Parowski led the way with a season-best outing in the 1,000yard freestyle. She was 13th with a time of 10:53.82.

Day 2 Recap Highlighting Friday’s action was a number of season-best marks.

Parowski was 10th in this morning’s 200-yard freestyle prelims with a time of 1:55.44. Martellotti placed 35th in the a.m. prelims in the 100-yard butterfly with a seasonbest time of 1:04.16.

Parowski came back in the Friday night finals and bettered her morning prelim time with a mark of 1:54.15 in the “B” finals of the 200-free.

The Bald Eagles clocked a season-best in the 200-yard freestyle relay with a time of 1:42.99 and hit a season-best in the 400-yard medley relay with a time of 4:17.05.

Day 3 Recap On Saturday, Parowski booked another trip to the consolation finals, thanks to a 14th place finish in the morning 500-yard freestyle prelims. She turned in a time of 5:12.62.

In the Saturday night “B” finals, she clocked an improved time of 5:10.21, good enough for 13th overall.

Nicole Martellotti finished 19th in the 100-yard backstroke prelims (1:01.00) and Bingham clocked a season-best in the event with a time of 1:03.84.

Day 4 Recap Parowski qualified a spot in the 100yard freestyle consolation finals, thanks to a strong swim the morning prelims.

She hit a time of 53.92 in the morning for a 13th place finish in the prelims.

In the night’s “B” finals, Parowski finished 13th and improved her time from the a.m. with a mark of 53.77.

Bingham capped a tremendous four days with nearly a three-second season-best in the 200-yard backstroke. Her time of 2:13.76 was good enough for 27th in the prelims the morning.

37th Collegiate Boxing Invitational set for Saturday Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu The 37th Annual Collegiate Boxing Invitational will be held at the Thomas Fieldhouse on Saturday, Feb. 27. The preliminary card begins at 1:30 p.m. and the main card will get underway at 7:00 p.m.

There are 12 teams that are set to participate this year, which is more than the fall invitational: US Coast Guard Academy, US Military Academy, Miami University, Shippensburg University, University of Massachusetts, West Virginia University, Penn State University, University of Connecticut, Kutztown University, University of North Carolina, Trinity College and Lock Haven.

Just like there are 12 teams that are going to compete, LHU has 12 boxers that have bouts lined up.

Head coach Ken Cooper has a team constructed of several veterans that have valuable experience and several young, promising boxers.

Zack Rice, Zaire Ali and Cristian Morales three of Cooper’s veterans that already have created a distinguished career for themselves. Rice was a 3rd place All-American in 2014 and Ali/Morales were national qualifiers last year.

Tafari Gravesande is another veteran presence on the team that has Cooper excited for this year’s invitational. “Tafari is very competitive boxer, who has improved each time out,” said Cooper.

As to the amount of teams that are coming to the Fieldhouse, Cooper said, “Teams are excited to come to LHU because of the fanbase we have. I’m expecting a large crowd.”

Softball goes 3-3 opening weekend Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Game 1: New Haven 5 - Lock Haven 0 New Haven got the best of Lock Haven in the Bald Eagles season opener. Junior Rachel Mouillesseaux pitched well, but substandard defense behind her was a large reason for the 5-0 margin.

There were four errors committed by four separate Bald Eagles to go along with six stolen bases allowed. Four of the five runs allowed were unearned. Mouillesseaux went the distance while striking out six batters, allowing 12 hits and walking two batters. She also registered two of the team’s five hits on the day.

Two of the other five hits belonged to junior McKenna Garlock. She also drew a walk to open the season with a perfect on-base percentage.

Game 2: Molloy 5 - Lock Haven 4 Errors once again played a large role in Molloy’s

victory over LHU in the second game of the day.

Freshman Bekah Slattery toed the mound for the first five innings of the game and pitched admirably. She allowed four hits and one walk, but was charged with five unearned runs. The final two innings of the game belonged to fellow freshman Becca Caputo. One hit and one walk was all that was registered to her.

Heading into the fifth inning, Lock Haven was down 1-0 and they came out of the inning down 5-0.

A 3-run home-run capped the scoring in the inning.

An RBI-single from Michelle Holweger in the sixth got Lock Haven on the scoreboard. Batting in the leadoff spot, freshman Jessica Strouse was up to bat with two outs in the seventh inning and hit a 3-run home-run of her own to get Lock Haven within one. Jodi Weaknecht popped out to shortstop on the next at-bat to end the rally and the game.

Through the first two games, nine of 10 runs allowed were unearned.

Game 3: Lock Haven 5 - Wilmington 1 A 10:00 a.m. start didn’t prevent Lock Haven from getting off to a quick start. Strouse opened the game with a single on an 0-1 pitch and eventually came around to score on Mouillesseaux’s fielder’s choice.

Mouillesseaux was on the mound and turned in another quality performance to pick up the first win of the season for the Bald Eagles. She tossed her second complete game of the season while striking out four, walking none and allowing six hits. The only mark against her came in the seventh inning after allowing a single and then an RBI double. She had a one-two-three inning in the 1st, 3rd and 4th.

The one through four batters of the lineup did most of the damage going a collective 7-12 with three walks.

Game 4: Lock Haven 3 - Felician 2 The duo of Slattery and Mouillesseaux once again limited the opponent in the 3-2 win. Slattery managed to work around four more errors and went the first six before turning it over to Mouillesseaux.

In her six innings of work Slattery allowed eight hits, no walks and struck out seven. This marked her first win of the season.

The top four of the lineup once again carried the offensive load for the Bald Eagles. Six of the seven hits and two of the three RBI’s came from this group.

Mouillesseaux worked around two walks in the seventh inning to record her first save of the year.

Game 5: Lock Haven 5 - Merrimack 4 In contrast to the Felician game, Mouillesseaux started this game and it was finished off by Slattery.

The team’s third consecutive win was a back and forth contest. Merrimack got one run in the

first and LHU answered with three in the second.

Slattery drove herself and Mouillesseaux in with a 2-run home run in the inning.

The fifth inning saw Merrimack string together three hits that eventually evened the scoring at three. Garlock’s two-RBI double put the Bald Eagles ahead and provided an insurance run that proved crucial in the bottom of the inning.

Slattery’s first save of the year was the two inning variety two hits, one walk and one earned.

Game 6: Le Moyne 7 - Lock Haven 4 Two three-run frames ultimately proved too much for Lock Haven to come back from in the final game of the trip.

The Dolphins of Le Moyne got three in the first, three in the third and one more in the fifth.

Slattery took the loss, going five innings while giving up six earned runs and one more unearned on six hits and three walks.

Freshman Faith Ceely came up with the bases loaded in the sixth inning and came through with a bases-clearing double in her first at-bat for the Bald Eagles.
