Presidential election update: Webb drops out, Biden waves bid Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu Jim Webb has ended his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination, and announced at a press conference that he will consider running as an Independent. Vice President Joe Biden has also ended months of intense speculation about his political future on Wednesday by announcing he wouldn’t seek the presidency.

Webb said at the press conference Tuesday that the Democratic Party has moved away from “millions of dedicated, hard-working Americans.”

Webb’s campaign never really got off the ground and was seen by some as more of a vanity play than an actual presidential bid. Webb spent only four days campaigning in New Hampshire and 20 days in Iowa, far fewer than his challengers, Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders. According to the National Journal, Webb raised less than $700,000 and was averaging about one percent in national polling.

Joe Biden, current Vice President of U.S. In last week’s debate, Webb spent much of his time complaining he wasn’t getting enough time .Webb, who at one time was a Republican, notably served as secretary of the Navy under then-President Ronald Reagan after a decorated military career.

“Some people say I am a Republican who became a Democrat, but that I often sound like a Republican in a room full of Democrats or a Democrat in a room full of Republicans.

Actually, I take that as a compliment” Webb told CNN.

Jim Web, former presidential candidate “The very nature of our democracy is under siege due to the power structure and the money that finances both political parties,” Webb said at the press conference, but his campaign funding strategies have also come into question.

Added to the money Webb reimbursed himself, more than two-thirds of the campaign contributions spent since he left Congress went directly into the pockets of a Webb family member according to the New York Post. Webb’s campaign insists the family payments are for honest work.

“Amy [Webb’s daughter] runs the website,” a Webb campaign spokesman told the Chicago Tribune.

Webb’s exit leaves four major contenders still in the race for the Democratic nomination: former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, independent Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley and former Rhode Island Gov. Lincoln Chafee.

Vice President Joe Biden also made an announcement Wednesday morning after three months of intense speculation over whether or not he would run. His candidacy could have meant the fracturing of the Democratic party, as he and Hillary were part of the same administration. At the press conference which took place at the White House, Biden said the window for a successful campaign “has closed,” noting his family’s grief following the death of his son, Beau.

Biden’s aides were divided over whether Mr. Biden, should try to run again. Many of the party’s top donors and veteran strategists, including some of President Obama’s old advisers, are supporting Mrs. Clinton.

LHU honoring those affected by domestic violence Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu Since 1981, October has officially been National Domestic Violence Awareness month. To honor those that have been affected, LHU’s HOPE Center is holding a Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil on October 28 at 6 p.m.

In 2009, a group of faculty at LHU came together and realized that there was no place on campus where students who have been victims of domestic violence or sexual assault could go for support. As a result, the HOPE center was developed for students seeking support.

Lisette Schillig, a English professor and the HOPE Center Director says, “One of our principal missions is to provide resource information and support to any student at LHU who has questions or concerns about domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking, intimate partner violence and health and wellbeing.”

Peg Dierkers, the executive director of the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV), will be this year’s guest speaker at the HOPE Center’s 8th Annual Domestic Violence Awareness Vigil.

PCADV is a private nonprofit organization dedicated to ending domestic violence and started in 1976. Their goals include creating safer communities, investing in women’s financial independence, healing child witnesses and much more.

“We hold the vigil to bring awareness about domestic violence, honor those who have been victimized and who have survived in effort to bring attention to ways that we can support one another. We want to make this an educational opportunity to remind people that we have an obligation to one another to be that support.” said Schillig According to pcadv.org, there has been a recorded 1,678 domestic violence related deaths in Pennsylvania since 2004. Last year there were 97 victims killed, 59 of them were women and 38 were men. Along with 44 perpetrator deaths, the total number of deaths due to domestic violence in 2014 alone was 141.

Schillig hopes that those who attend the vigil realize that domestic violence is a real issue and it can affect anyone. “Domestic abuse affects someone that you may be sitting next to in class, it affects someone in

your community and we all share a responsibility to try and help prevent it.”

The vigil is also intended to help people understand domestic abuse and raise awareness that some situations are very complicated and it is difficult for someone to remove themselves from it. “It is about empowering people because they make the decisions, they have to decide Peg Dierkers, executive director of what the right choices are for them, but we can be those PCADV support people to make them feel empowered.” said Schillig.

Other speakers at the vigil include, Amy Cotner, LHU Associate Dean of Student and Residence Life, Sherry Moore, LHU Assistant Director of Human Resources for Compliance and Rose Hibbler, Prevention/Education Specialist for the Clinton County Women’s Center.

With a performance from the LHU Gospel Choir.

Kenneth Hall, the director of the Center for Excellence and Inclusion will be honored at the vigil. Schillig says, “We would like to honor how important he is on campus for support for a lot of students. He has done a lot to help us fulfill the mission of hope.”

Another event at the vigil will be the open mic portion of the night, where audience members can share their experiences with domestic violence or sexual assault whether it happened to them personally, or they know someone who has been through it.

The HOPE Center welcomes anyone who would like to offer support or any of those who would like to volunteer at the center. The center is located in Ulmer Hall, Suite 100 and is open five days a week. Be sure to attend the vigil on October 28 at 6 p.m. in Rogers Gymnasium and be prepared to experience a very empowering and eye-opening event.

Think a happy thought: ‘Pan’ rocks theaters Sam Shirk A&E Editor sxs1090@lhup.edu Hurry to the theater Peter Pan fans! “Pan” is one adventure you don’t want to miss.

“Pan” is a fun but emotional tale of 12-year-old orphan, Peter, who is taken away to the magical world of Neverland. While there, he meets some very familiar characters and some very unfamiliar ones.

My favorite part about this movie was that it explained a lot things where Peter Pan is concerned. Such as, why he can fly, where he’s from, what makes him so magical, why he never grows up and so much more. It is the perfect movie for any die-hard Peter Pan fan and I happen to be one of them.

Another point I loved about this film were the characters. I felt this film captured the personality of each character exquisitely. Plus, you learn a lot about the characters you do meet. For example, at some point the lovable but gullible Captain Hook makes an appearance. During his screen time, we learn exactly who he is and what his motives are.

After seeing this film, I can say I’ll always have a soft spot for Captain Hook.

We also see a completely different side of Peter Pan himself. As an orphan who’s still learning about himself, it makes him more fragile than the witty boy we’ve come to know and love. While his sarcastic, and sometimes snarky, nature is still there, you do see a much quieter and more frightened version of him. We find that Peter needs all the help he can get and seeks it by leaning on his friends in multiple ways.

I felt the actors really helped with bringing the characters to life because they played their roles perfectly. Every actor seem to fully embody the character they portrayed which made it all the more exciting! It also made me feel like I was there with them along this journey and like I could empathize with them on a whole new level.

Let’s talk technical for a bit. Through the film the special effects are very present, it features lots of cool and beautiful ones that add to the magic of the story. A scene that sticks out in particular is the scene with mermaid lagoon and for various reasons. The mermaids themselves have an effect on them and it is a gorgeous one as they appear almost translucent, giving them a very mystical edge. Also, there’s a magical scene where the water plays a memory and they make the memory completely using the water. This memory itself embodies the artistic edge felt throughout the entire film.

The music used in the film is also a nice addition, as they picked interesting tracks that enhance the scenes they’re heard in. The soundtrack is an unexpected but fantastic one, although, what soundtrack isn’t when it includes singing pirates!

Unfortunately, I cannot say the entire film was amazing, just a large portion. There were some downsides to it. It was very predictable in some areas so there wasn’t a strong shock value like in most new films.

It also had quite a few strange scenes that made me go “...Okay...” but there weren’t a lot of these scenes, which were good. Lastly, I felt certain things that should have happened didn’t but that might be a personal preference.

“Pan” overall was a fantastic film and I highly recommend it to any other Peter Pan fans out there. “Pan” is still showing at the Roxy Theater and there is a 3D showing of it tonight at 7pm.

‘Rocky Horror’: A sweet transvestite, aliens and fabulous heels Mary Jones A&E Editor mej102@lhup.edu Local theatre, the Millbrook Playhouse is performing its last play for the 2015 season, “The Rock Horror Show.” Written by Richard O’Brian and directed

by David E. Leidholdt, this amazing play features love, a sweet transvestite, aliens and fabulous heels.

This comedy-horror musical is opened by a narrator who introduces a newly engaged couple, Brad Majors and Janet Weiss, who find themselves lost in the rain with a broken down car. When they go to a nearby castle in search for a phone, they enter the world of Dr. Frank N. Furter who is a selfproclaimed “sweet transvestite from Transsexual, Transylvania,” claiming to have found the secret to life and reveals his creation, Rocky, a living muscle man.

As a “Rocky Horror virgin,” that is someone who’s never experienced “Rocky Horror” before, I found this play to be enjoyable. The actors did a phenomenal job in portraying their characters, making them seem to come alive, especially since the audience was invited to interact during the play, such as yelling names and comments and using the props from the “participation bags” at the right times. It really bought the audience into the play, making us more than just spectators.

Although the stage was limited in size and set pieces, the cast used every inch of it, and some of the audience seats as well, doing so skillfully. The only awkward time was when one of the actors came through the seats in between

my row and the one in front, mainly because of the lack of legroom. The lighting was also done well, matching the atmosphere of the scene. The costumes designed by Lock Haven University theater professor, Ramona Broomer, were put together skillfully, although shockingly, allowing the audience to see just what kind of people each character was.

Overall, “The Rocky Horror Show” was a fantastic experience I wouldn’t mind reliving. It also made me excited to search out the movie and watch it, just not around my parents. I would recommend anyone other than kids to go see this play. The next show is tonight, at 7:30pm!

LOCK HAVEN - Natalie S. Harnett, author of “The Hollow Ground,” will be coming to Lock Haven University on Thursday, Nov. 5th, at 6pm in the Multipurpose Room of the Parson Union Building.

Hosted by Lock Haven University’s Pennsylvania Authors reading series, Harnett will be presenting her groundbreaking novel that deepens our understanding of a coal town devastated by familial, governmental and environmental rifts. An Amazon and Audible Best Seller, this literary mystery and family saga draws on actual events in Carbondale and Centralia, Pennsylvania. It recently won both the John Gardner Fiction Book Award and the Appalachian Book of the Year.

Professors’ art showcased at Station Gallery Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu This month you can see the works of LHUP’s Art Faculty at the Station Gallery near Downtown Lock Haven. Professors Jason Bronner, Ray Heffner, and Vance McCoy opened the gallery on Friday to a sizable crowd.

Jason Bronner’s collection of paintings are actually reimaginings of paintings seen on Greek and Roman pottery.

Formally, they are frescoes and are painted on plaster. The paintings have been distressed to give the illusion of age and displacement; the rough edges of the works suggest that they have been ripped from the wall of an ancient building. Bronner says that the inspiration for the work was a recent visit to Italy where some of the surviving frescoes of Pompeii can be seen. Bright teals, salmons, and deep purples give the paintings a contemporary edge, suggesting whimsical modern interpretations of the classical myths and designs. One of the works depicts Hercules coaxing the three-headed Cerberus but the scene is splashed over with thick paint and polka-dot pattern that recalls Lichtenstein. The paintings also play with markmaking. Viewers can see the artist’s process in the marks left behind the subject of the painting and the unintended marks give the paintings a historical resonance.

Vance McCoy’s pottery and wooden sculptures fit nicely with the painted works, though they evoke a different period. The vessels are glazed partially with reflective glaze, and partially with a matte forest green which gives them a strong tactile quality and suggests durability. A unique piece at the gallery is McCoy’s “Slab

Construction Teapot”. The teapot is geometric, but also highly animated. It gives the viewer the impression that it could walk away on it’s four legs at any moment. The piece is sturdy and practical and has more character than one would normally assign to a teapot. The wooden sculptures are also highly-animated. Called “Mechanisms” they are geometric pieces that evoke finely balanced machinery.

Three of the works are painted brightly and feature arching metal rods. McCoy says that his goal with these sculptures was to create a three-dimensional Kandinsky. Two other “Mechanism” pieces contain found objects and resemble the post-industrial monoliths that Pennsylvanians are accustomed to seeing in old rail-yards and along highways.

These sculptures have a darker demeanor, connoting hard labor and repetition of movement.

Ray Heffner has brought his atmospheric sketches to the gallery. The sketches depict dream-like architecture in charcoal. Most of the sketches show structures that are reminiscent of gothic cathedrals. The expansive, dusky interiors are illuminated by window light. The markmaking is rough, and suggests industry and city-planning.

Two of the pieces are colorful pastel works of similar subjects. The muted primary colors bring to light the fact that these drawings are studies in composition and balance. Bridge-like structures and tunnels also appear in the work, along with a few dark figures. Heffner says that most of his work is figurative, and that this collection is a departure, but a few figures have managed to find their way in. Some of these forms appear in boats headed for an unknown destination. Though the sketches recall architectural drawings, they are not rendered from life, and came directly from the mind of the artist.

The show will on display until November 8.

Where in the World: Johannesburg, South Africa Raymond Stellhorn Columnist rjs2091@lhup.edu The famous South African rugby team is yet again on the verge of winning another Rugby World Cup as many may have seen in the movie “Invictus”.

This week we take a closer look at the largest city in the land home to the Springboks.

Johannesburg, known by the locals as Jo’burg or Jozi, is the capital of the province Gauteng, a massive urbanized area dominated by the Hillbrow skyline. It has become a highly sought destination to visit in Africa in recent years due to the reduction in violence and media exposure through movies and sport. The first attraction one must visit upon arrival in Jo’burg is the Apartheid Museum. Here, one will be able to learn about and try to understand the struggle of racial equality and freedom in apartheid South Africa. However, today there are still some tensions between blacks and whites but not nearly as unequal as it was during the apartheid.

Another destination to visit in Johannesburg to discover more of the horrors of apartheid is Constitution Hill where

Mahatma Gandhi and Nelson Mandela were both imprisoned. To have a living understanding of apartheid, it is recommend to visit the Soweto to know why and how the townships were created for the hardworking miners that lived there and an opportunity to interact with their descendants today.

Numerous safari tours starting in Jo’burg are available for reasonable prices. Some tours will take their guests only for one day and others numerous days. Also, each tour differs on where and how far in the South African countryside one will be taken.

For sports fans, the venues of the 1995 Rugby World Cup and 2010 Soccer Cup are still present and open to the public. Ellis Park where Nelson Mandela wearing a Springboks jersey presented the trophy to the winning South African national team hosts a museum and tour for visitors. Stadium tours and occasionally local and national matches are held as well as concerts at the FNB Stadium located in Soweto where the 2010 World Cup final was played and where Mandela’s final public appearance and funeral was held.

Visit post-apartheid Johannesburg to understand the struggle of years past and to be a part of a movement towards a bright future in South Africa.

SpookHaven is located at 100 Danis St. Mill Hall PA. The price for people of all ages is $12 a person of any age, and $17 for front of line tickets. You cannot pay with a credit card at the haunt. They are open every weekend at 7 p.m. until ticket sales stop at 10 p.m. On Oct. 31 there is a kid friendly trick or treat and a behind the scenes tour from 1 to 3 p.m.

The Forensic Science Club at Penn State University is holding a haunted house from Oct. 29-31 at 8-10 p.m. for $4.99. Takes place at Spruce Cottage which is right beside Wartik and the Chemistry building. This year’s theme is childhood horrors.

Creekside Manor in Williamsport has a circus of the dead theme this year. The manor is located at 11759 Snug Harbor Lane Williamsport, MD 21795. Ticket booths open at 7 p.m. and the doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the last ticket is sold at 10 p.m. This haunted house is not recommended for people under 12 years old. They are open through this weekend through Halloween night.

“I have been in a walk through haunted house at Universal Studios LA and was very traumatized by the experience. I do not like the idea of actors being about to touch and grab me. I have also known a fellow college student who has gone to SpookHaven and peed her pants out of fright,” said Emily Shultz, a senior early childhood education major.

Defeat the belly pouch with a simple fix Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu It seems like no matter how many ab workouts you do, you’ll always have that little pouch under your belly button. You could be fit and healthy but that pouch insists on staying there and ruining your gloating capabilities after a workout.

Even if you don’t work out everyday or aren’t as toned as some people, you can still be thin and have this little pouch. This pouch may be fat, which is good to have because it protects your internal organs, but it may also be a result of bad posture or a lack of engagement in your core.

Your abdominis muscle, or abdominal wall, actually covers your entire midsection and connects at your pelvis. If you keep your core lax, the muscles there will weaken. Hyperlordosis is caused by weak muscles and makes the pelvis tilt forward more than it should. The tilt causes the lower abdominal area to protrude forward and your butt to spring upwards. This is what causes the

hated belly pouch.

These weak muscles also cause poor posture because they are not engaged and so you hunch over them. Your shoulders hunch, your muscles go lax and your belly pouch is formed.

A simple step to fixing this is to fix your posture.

Focus on walking with your shoulders back.. This is going to be a hard habit to form but focus on it for a minute of two at a time until you start to do it unconsciously. It will take awhile but in the long run, a good posture is better for more than just getting rid of some belly pouch. Also try sitting with your back to your chair in class.

Another step is to engage your core. Tightening your muscles will help bring the pelvis back up to its natural position. So stand up straight and engage your core, does your belly pooch move? Then it’s time to make these minor, yet difficult changes. It will be hard and tiring, but sitting up straight and tightening your core while sitting in class is an easy way to start.

You don’t want that belly pooch to grow into a fully formed belly do you?

Study Abroad Stories: Caen, France Lauren Waters Copyeditor lmw5233@lhup.edu This past summer, I studied abroad in Caen, France with two of my fellow classmates from my French class for about a month. The University of Caen in Normandy is large and beautiful, intersected by the tracks of the trams which pass through campus at all hours of the day.

I have many fond memories from my trip such as walking through ruins of a castle to get into town but my one of my favorite memories while on the trip was when we traveled to Giverny where we visited Monet’s gardens and house.

When we arrived with our other classmates in Giverny, we were greeted with the sight of luscious greenery which surrounds the gates leading into the gardens which were full of a variety of beautiful flowers covering the stone walls of the gates.

After grabbing our tickets and entering through the gates, we strolled through the gardens. It seemed I had never seen so many different flowers in one spot in my entire life. A stream runs through the entire garden and had several tiny row boats floating on it. While in the gardens, we found the famous bridge painted by Monet where we took many photos and compared it to the painting.

After working our way through the gardens, we entered Monet’s house where every room was a different vibrant color. The kitchen was a bright blue with white and blue tiles all over the walls. The dining room was canary yellow containing yellow curtains, yellow cabinets, yellow chairs and more. Every room was a splash of vibrant color containing old furnishing from when Monet and his family lived there.

In one room, there was almost every single painting he had painted. Though most were reproductions, people crowded around each one as if they were looking at real Monet paintings.

After touring the rest of the house, my classmates and I walked happily to our bus to leave.

That day was amazing and will always be one of my favorite memories of my time abroad.

Alumni Corner: One quote can change the world Jaime Donovan Alumni Contributor jaimedonovan33@gmail.com Homecoming was this past weekend in the small town of Lock Haven, Pennsylvania. While I was unable to attend the festivities, memories resurfaced surrounding the celebrations of the university, sports functions in crimson and white and of the vast reminiscences of friends, students and teachers who forever changed the course of my life.

One educationalist in particular whose words and teachings encouraged and imprinted for years beyond undergrad were those of Mr. Dr. Rush. With his celebrated routine of beginning each class with an inspirational quote, he was a professor who not only motivated his students to reach new academic heights, but also challenged

all of us to become better versions of ourselves each and everyday.

On our final block days, Mr. Dr. Rush dedicated an entire class to Gandhi’s words, “The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.” I was able to relate to most of the quotes throughout the semester, however, this adage resonated with me on a level different than ever before. While I had considered pursuing a master’s degree in the world of guidance, that day in block solidified my belief. Now thirteen months into the program, I know school counseling is what I am undoubtedly meant to do!

The culmination of assignments, discussions, and observations in the school setting provide both a challenge and ignite a passion, and it is one that I absolutely love. More importantly, assisting students in their social, cognitive,

personal and overall development is something amazing and inspiring to see.

I look forward to the challenge and all that the world of school counseling has to offer and I thank Mr. Dr. Rush for his insightful words and teachings, for they have allowed me to reach where I am at today. It is true what they say in that one class, one educator and, more importantly, one quote can change the world.

“The best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others.”

Don’t destroy the person you love Diosanny Rivera Columnist dkr6862@lhup.edu For some reason it took me a while to think of what to write for this week. Then I remembered that October isn’t only Breast Cancer Awareness month, it’s also Domestic Violence Awareness month. So I’ve decided to write about something that is very near and dear to my heart, Emotional Abuse (trigger warning).

I have heard people say they don’t think emotional abuse is something that can actually happen, that it’s all in the victim’s head and they just need to get over it.

To those people I say this: imagine you just found this great person and you’ve started dating them. They’re kind to you and sweet and they always tell you how much better you are than their ex. You feel like you have found a great match.

The only problem is that sometimes they make some sarcastic comments that kind of hurt but you ignore that because everything else about the relationship is working fine and they’re just small comments that your partner probably didn’t mean.

So you just continue on your merry

way, living life, dating them.

One day, your partner makes a comment that digs at you and hurts a lot. Afterwards, they hug you and hold you and tell you that they’re really sorry, they didn’t mean it and that that they’ll never do it again. So you let it slide and everything seems dandy.

Until it happens again. But they insist that they don’t mean to hurt you and they reassure you that they’ll never do it again. They tell you how much they love you and how much better you are than their ex. So you stay.

And then it happens again. Except the comment is worse this time. They shoot straight for one of your biggest insecurities, but afterwards they hold you and tell you how sorry they are and that they love you so very very much.

You stay because they love you and they didn’t mean what they said and you love them so much that all you want is to make them happy.

Besides, you’re better than their ex so they would never say those things to hurt you on purpose, right?

And then the next time it’s even worse. They start to blame you for their misfortune and you start to

think that maybe they’re right, maybe you are all the bad things they say about you because they love you and they wouldn’t say such nasty things if those things weren’t true, right?

And the cycle just repeats itself over and over again until you don’t know up from down, left from right and right from wrong.

Until you don’t know who you are anymore and you don’t know how you got to where you are.

Until you have panic attacks over anything that has the potential to upset your partner because you know that they’re going to blame everything on you and then you’ll be the one who ends up crying while they hold you and whisper their lies of adoration in your ear.

Until you find yourself in the ugliest parts of your mind and you don’t know how to crawl back out again.

Until the core of who you are is forever changed.

Until you can’t remember the last time you were genuinely happy and you can’t remember the last time you saw any of your friends or had anything even resembling fun.

Until your entire life seems to

be covered by this dark, oppressive presence and you’re lost. Completely and utterly lost.

To the naysayers who say that emotional abuse isn’t real, I can personally assure you that it is a very real and very painful reality for a lot of people.

Emotional abuse is not something to joke about and it’s not a “less serious” form of abuse. It can be psychologically harmful and it changes the victim forever.

To those who have been emotionally abused in the past, you are so much more than what your abuser told you. You are a beautiful and wonderful human being who deserves better and if you are struggling, even if it’s been years since you broke off the toxic relationship, there is absolutely no shame in seeking help.

To those who think they may be in an emotionally abusive relationship, seek help. Not every relationship is the same so yours may not play out like the example, but I encourage you to talk to someone. Even during the times when your relationship seems happy and like things are turning around, seek help, because the cycle will repeat itself. I guarantee it.

Smash the patriarchy

Men blame feminists for ignoring issues that affect men and that women already have all the power. They think Men are the oppressed group.

Little do they understand that it is not feminists causing their problems; it’s the patriarchy.

Patriarchy is a system where men and masculine bodies dominate because power and authority are in the hands of adult men.

However, even though men are the main beneficiaries of patriarchy, patriarchal ideals affect both women and men.

The patriarchy not only tells women how to behave, but it also controls the actions and behaviors of men as well.

Men assert that they are more oppressed

than women because male victims of sexual and domestic abuse are not likely to be taken seriously.

Men aren’t considered to be competent parents.

Men aren’t allowed to express their feelings.

Allow me to let you in on a little secret: this is all caused by the patriarchy.

It is the patriarchy that tells men they must be strong, unfeeling machines. To express emotion is to show weakness and men are not allowed to be weak. The only thing you can feel is anger. Only anger will allow you to demonstrate your strength and authority.

The patriarchy tells men that they can’t be raped or abused. You’re a man. You’re supposed to like this. Man up. Male victims of rape and abuse aren’t taken seriously because they are told they cannot be conquered by any other person, especially not a woman.

It’s the patriarchy that tells men that they

are inferior parents to women. The patriarchy perpetuates gender norms that say women are naturally caring and maternal. No man’s parental skills can compare to those of a woman. Men are less likely to win custody of their children because the patriarchy made it so.

I’m tired of hearing that feminism shouldn’t exist because men are victims of female power. No, everyone is a victim of the oppressive gender roles set in place by the patriarchy.

Men are just finally realizing that these standards exist. But instead of opening their eyes to the bigger picture, they choose to focus their anger on feminists, who so clearly want to crush men and rise to become the more powerful gender.

That’s a bunch of nonsense. If you’re a man and you feel smothered by our socially perpetuated gender norms of masculinity, feminism is your best friend.

What’s a stereotypical girl’s best friend besides diamonds? Clothing! Clothing is actually a funny thing; it can affect your mood and even how people see you.

For instance, days you don’t try looking nice everyone thinks you look nice and days you try to look nice everyone doesn’t seem to care. Now isn’t that funny?

I would love to say I have a fashion sense but sadly, most days, I throw whatever I see first on.

You know what happens these days? You guessed it! Everyone thinks I look nice.

Lately, however, I haven’t just been getting that I look nice. No, not nice but hipster!? I hear this term used to describe people all the time but what does it actually mean?

Apparently if I say I’m not a hipster it makes me one, but what if someone really isn’t one? Are those people just supposed to say, “Yes, I am a

hipster”, and then have everyone be like, “You just admitted. You aren’t hipster.”

To ease my ongoing mind on this situation I, like every millennial these days, went to Google for an answer. According to Dictionary.com, a hipster is, “A usually young person who is trendy, stylish or progressive in an unconventional way.”

Upon reading this definition, I became even more confused over my own style identity. Did I become trendy and stylish overnight? Sadly, I looked in my closet and the answer is no.

Unsatisfied with that definition, I went to the always funny Urban Dictionary. Urban Dictionary defined hipster as, “An unwashed and un-groomed person who hates corporations and everything mainstream, yet still buys Apple products.”

Now, I am so confused I don’t know down from up! I shower every day, I’m a Business Administration major and I have an Android phone! This definition is literally the opposite of who I am!

So now here I am, confused by the definitions of hipster and am left to think that people are

saying that I look like the ever so stylish hipster panties. Although I prefer more of a bikini cut, I guess I can deal with being called hipster.

My real question is, why did we create a slang term that defines you as being it when we say we aren’t? It makes no sense really.

The English language baffles me at times.

Think about it. We made a term that stands for a type of style and yet, if we say we do not wear that style, people define us as it anyway. This is why other nations hate America (not really, there are other reasons)!

I like using some slang terms and I’ll admit I use the term hipster often but that still doesn’t mean I understand the exact definition. I mean who really knows what “deez nuts” means?! Yet we say it all the time like it’s our job.

I don’t mind people calling me hipster even if that term reminds me of underwear, but slang terms are getting out of hand. What’s next?

The English language is still going to confuse me with or without slang terms. I just wish the slang would slow down.

Philly sports scene at all-time low

Losing season after losing season, golfing instead of winning playoff series and mismanaged organizations basically sum up all one would need to know about the Philadelphia sports climate right now.

A culture of blue-collar hard work, passion and intensity is what I came to know growing up watching the Eagles, Flyers, Sixers and sometimes even the Phillies. Now it all seems to have gone down the drain.

This faltering starts with ownership and management of each of the four professional sports franchises in Philadelphia. Each owner has a glaring weakness that has hurt each of their franchises in recent memory.

It starts with the Flyers.

Ed Snider has owned the Flyers since they became apart of the NHL as an expansion franchise in 1966.

The 82 year old Snider hasn’t seen his beloved hockey franchise win a Stanley Cup since 1975.

Since then, the Flyers, under the

expectations of Snider, have tried everything in their power to win a Cup since then. The issue is, the process they have taken has been completely wrong.

The Flyers have traded away prospects for old veteran players mid-season in hopes of making a Cup run. They have signed horrible contracts with free agents; yes, Vinny Lecavalier, I am talking about you.

However, now under the leadership of new general manager Ron Hextall, the Flyers seem to be in an upward pattern.

The Flyers have lots of young talented prospects, in which Hextall has vowed to let them develop, as he is sticking to his long-term plan. It is something that Snider seems to have bought into, which is good to see.

With the Sixers, I don’t think any one person has any clue what direction that franchise is going.

Moreover, I don’t even think their owner, Josh Harris, or their general manager, Sam Hinkie, have a general clue either.

The Sixers have been trying to sell the fan base on the fact that the Sixers will be better by building through the

draft and basically losing on purpose in order to get better. The problem is that the upcoming season will be year three of the Sixers “tanking” plan.

They have made zero progress.

They were able to grab AllAmerican center, Jahlil Okafor, out of Duke with the third overall pick in June’s draft, they have Nerlens Noel, but other than that, the Sixers roster is filled with no-name NBA players or players who have no business playing in the NBA. I don’t know how a fan base can take purposeful losing for more than three years.

However, the Phillies, as bad as they have been, may be on an upswing. It only took them three years to figure out that it was time to blow the team up.

The Phillies, who take pride in loyalty to their players, finally said goodbye to Chase Utley and Cole Hamels mid-season. It is to be determined whether the prospects acquired in those deals will pan out, but it is a step in the right direction.

The hiring of Andy MacPhail as new president of the team should help the franchise, too. His first big

decision was terminating the contract of general manager Ruben Amaro.

The franchise needs to move in a complete different direction.

And now we get to the Eagles.

The Eagles may be the one team in Philadelphia that has a shot at making the playoffs, let alone getting deep into the playoffs. They just don’t have a quarterback.

Chip Kelly basically revamped the entire Eagles roster once he was given full control by owner Jeffrey Lurie and early on this season none of Chip’s moves really panned out.

The Eagles have won three out of four games, however, they face a tough and undefeated Panthers team on the road this week. It will be the most telling game of the season for the Eagles, and we will find out really how good of a team they are.

One can hope that the Flyers can surprise everyone, the Eagles can get hot, the Phillies can magically be a wildcard team next year and that the Sixers can be a viable team in 10 years, but the reality of it is, each team is far from being looked at as one of the better franchises in their sport.

Volleyball set to host annual Dig Pink game Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu

The Lock Haven University volleyball team is pairing up with a local cancer organization to host the annual “Dig Pink” game on Friday, Oct. 23.

The effort is to increase awareness, education and funds for breast cancer research.

The Bald Eagles will be wearing pink for the match and those in attendance are asked to wear pink as well to support the cause.

The team will have a limited number of t-shirts on sale for $20 with a portion of the proceeds going to the local cancer organization. To place an order, contact head coach Dan Krieger at dkreiger@lhup.edu.

Junior defensive specialist Sydney Belcastro is honored to be part of the tradition. “To be part of something so special means a lot to me. During October, the whole community comes together in order to raise the awareness and I feel honored to help with something so important. It’s awesome to have our Dig Pink game and see everyone come and support breast cancer. When both teams are in their pink jerseys, even though we are opponents, we come together for the common cause,” said Belcastro.

As a junior, she has been a part of the Dig Pink game more than once and took time to reflect on last year’s game. “Last years Dig Pink game was a rewarding experience. We had a survivor, Deb Simcox, come to the game and tell everyone about her story. It was touching that she was so strong throughout her journey and that she was able to share it with everyone so openly. Times like that to make me realize that life is taken for granted. And of course It felt great to win that game,” said Belcastro.

Belcastro will play for her aunt Jaime and family friend Jill King, who are both survivors of breast cancer. “They mean so much to me. I was able to get my aunt one of our Dig Pink shirts last year and I felt honored to hand it to her because of her fight. I’m not a very emotional person, but to see the tears in her eyes when I gave it to her was very touching. I will continue to play for them and all the fighters out there,” said Belcastro.

Students divided on one-week fantasy leagues Eli Cooper Staff Writer ejc8874@lhup.edu

One-week fantasy leagues DraftKings and FanDuel have been under public scrutiny lately for accusations of insider trading. The leagues have become extremely popular over the last year due to very strong ad campaigns.

Some information was posted by DraftKings on a forum that is usually not made available until after the games because it can help people set up their lineups. Later that day, that same employee won $350,000 and is now causing people to question the integrity of the leagues.

Here at Lock Haven University, students who participate in these oneweek fantasy leagues seemed to have different views on the subject.

Senior sport administration major Matt Wyszynski, who uses DraftKings, wasn’t too concerned about the game’s integrity amid the allegations. “I’m still going to play it. I think they’ll handle the situation and make sure the games are fair,” he said.

Matt Lukeski, a senior fitness major was also confident that the company’s legitimacy was not a concern for him. “I think the whole situation is blown out of proportion. I think it was just a coincidence that guy went on to win all that money,” Lukeski said.

Not all of the students at Lock Haven University are comfortable with participating in the one-week fantasy leagues. Senior business administration major Dave Garcia had his doubts about both of the leagues and decided not to get involved at all.

“I’m not really comfortable with playing for money online and putting your credit card information on there so I don’t play in those leagues,” Garcia said.

He also found the recent insider trading speculation to be quite troubling.

“If employees have information that others don’t and they’re using it to win money then that’s not fair. I think those kind of leagues are too unreliable,” he went on to say.

Both leagues have denied the allegations and have ensured that the integrity of their games is very important to them. DraftKings and FanDuel will be under close watch as the league’s continue to operate.

The scoring was capped by Roach when she her fifth goal of the season in the 64th minute.

Maggie Wagenfeld started her eleventh game in goal for the Bald Eagles and finished the game with a season-high nine saves. Wagenfeld’s 0.75 goals-against-average is second in the entire country and her save percentage of 0.800 is tied for sixth in the nation.

Wagenfeld was provided with a stout defense in front of her in the form of Stephanie Whiteman, Colleen McCabe and Jenna Felice. Whiteman is currently second in the nation with eight defensive saves.

Lock Haven returns back to Charlotte E. Smith Field to play the Appalachian State Mountaineers (4-10) on Friday, October 23 at 3p.m. The following matchup is on the road at the home of the Saint Louis Billikens (0-16) on Sunday, October 25 at 2p.m. The regular season finale will be played at Charlotte E. Smith Field against Atlantic-10 foe Virginia Commonwealth (4-10) on Sunday, November 1 at noon.

The penultimate road game of the season for the Lock Haven University field hockey team resulted in a victory over the Mountain Hawks of Lehigh, 4-1.

The win pushed LHU’s record to 14-3 on the season which is good enough to earn them the No. 24 ranking in the country.

The non-conference contest came two days after head coach Pat Rudy’s team dropped a match at Saint Francis University, 3-0. The four goals scored against Lehigh came from four different sources.

Two Warwick natives, Kiersten Cepeda and Noelle Kephart, found the back of the net along with Alyscia Smith and Tamia Roach.

Smith got Lock Haven on the scoreboard first when she scored on a penalty corner just 10:23 into the game. The goal was her fifth of the season.

The former Warwick Warriors were responsible for LHU’s second and third goals of the game. Cepeda’s goal, assisted by Lydia George, sent the Bald Eagles into the half with a two goal lead.

Taynor earns first career victory at Lock Haven Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu

The Lock Haven University football team (1-6, 1-3 PSAC) rolled over the mighty Wolves of Cheyney University (0-7, 0-4 PSAC) in LHU’s 2015 homecoming game at Hubert Jack Stadium.

The packed stadium was ready for the Bald Eagle’s first win of the season and they did not disappoint the fans with a final score of 56-20.

The win gave head coach Dave Taynor his first win at Lock Haven. The team scored a season-high 56 points, which is the most since the Bald Eagles crushed Edinboro 56-21 in 1968. This is also the second straight homecoming victory for Lock Haven. The Bald Eagles beat Millersville 17-10 last year.

Quarterback Caleb Walton tied his career-high with four passing touchdowns in the game, plus a rushing touchdown in the third quarter.

Walton threw for 342 total yards on 18-24 passing with no interceptions. His stellar play earned him Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Offensive Player of the Week honors.

Wide receiver David Cook had a great game as he hauled in five catches for 120 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ground, the team carried the ball 36 times for 248 yards (6.9 yard average). Malyk Harris, Beau Swales, Caleb Kephart and Walton all found the end zone when carrying the ball.

The Lock Haven defense also had a sensational day by recording four sacks, 10 tackles-for-a-loss, two fumble recoveries and one interception that was made by Daniel Strawbridge.

As for Cheyney, they remain win less on the season. The loss also gives Cheyney its/their? 39th consecutive loss. Lock Haven currently holds the record for most consecutive losses with 52. Cheyney can beat the streak with 53 straight losses if the Wolves lose the remainder of games this season and lose every game next season.

Despite the cold conditions, the home faithful was thrilled to see the Bald Eagles soar to victory.

Lock Haven University football returns to action next week when it travels to win less Millersville (0-7) next Saturday. The Millersville homecoming game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. kickoff.
