Explaning gravitational waves: Going in-depth with black holes in space Josh Cenderelli Staff Writer jxc3298@lhup.edu Simply, gravitational waves are ripples in the fabric of space and time. However, exploring that itself is confusing. If space was a giant trampoline, things that have mass would cause the trampoline to bend; the more mass something has the more the trampoline is distorted. Thus, the more mass something has, the more space gets bent and distorted by gravity.

The reason Earth goes around the sun is because the sun is very massive and causes a large distortion of space and time. So if you roll a marble on the trampoline around say something larger like a bowling ball in a straight line, it will move in a circle because of the distortion. There is no actual force pulling planets, just the bending of space.

Gravitational waves are produced whenever masses accelerate, changing the distortion of space.

Everything with mass and energy can make them -- just waving your hand creates gravitational waves, but they are virtually undetectable. Gravity is relatively weak in the scale of other forces in the universe, so you need something very massive while moving very fast to make ripples big enough to detect. The two most common masses looked at are black holes and neutron stars.

It takes a lot to observe this phenomenon. It is observed by measuring the space between two things.

Gravitational waves cause two points to get stretched or compressed, but you can’t just observe them by measuring because the ruler would be stretched as well. There is one ruler that does not get stretched, and that is the speed of light. If the space between two objects is stretched, the time it takes light to travel from point A to point B would increase, and it the space is

compressed the light takes less time to go from point A to point B. Scientists do this by using LIGO. LIGO’s is a laser interferometer gravitational wave observatory. It has 4 kilometer (2.5 mile) long tunnels and uses a laser to measure the distance between the ends of the tunnels. When a wave comes through, it stretches space in one direction and compresses it in the other. By measuring the lasers as they bounce between different points, physicists can determine if the space has compressed or stretched.

The precision needed is extraordinary.

To detect a gravitational wave, you need to measure a change in length by one part in 100,000,000,000,0 00,000,000,000. That’s like being able to tell a stick 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 meters long shrunk by one millimeter.

The effect of a gravitational wave is so miniscule that it gets confused with other “noise” or waves. So scientists need to use a smart data analysis technique. Scientists are hoping to identify the patterns of these waves by measuring what they get versus what they expect. It is almost like trying to hear someone in a loud party.

Scientists have been searching for these waves for over a decade and have finally found them, after upgrades to LIGO. The importance of this discovery is the fact that it gives us a whole new way to observe, explore and research space.

Waves from the Big Bang would tell us about how the universe was formed. Waves also form when black holes collide, which is actually the way they were detected, supernovas explode or massive neutron stars wiggle. Detecting these cosmic events, give us insight to the extreme forces of the universe.

Gravitational waves can also help scientists to understand the most fundamental laws of the universe, as predicted by Einstein with his General Theory of Relativity. Finding them could prove the theory correct or show where it is wrong. It is helping us discover the theory of everything.

Supreme Court member dies Justice Scalia, 79, was found dead over President’s day weekend at a Texas resort. His three decade long reign in the Supreme Court, made him a prominent voice in American Life. However, his death has only fueled debate in the Senate with Obama wanting to fill the vacancy, but to win conformation in the Republican controlled Senate would be extremely difficult. There has also been many conspiracy theories to come out around his death saying the Obama Administration killed him. Nonetheless, the Supreme Court will find it hard to fill the role of such an intelligent, acerbic individual.

“Deadpool” exceeds expectations “Deadpool” took home 152 million on its extended opening weekend with antihero Deadpool, played by Ryan Reynolds, at center stage. This hero has ascertained a cult following because of his lack of conventional hero attributes.

The merc’ with a mouth also broke several records including the biggest R-rated opening, passing the Matrix’s 91.8 million, and the biggest X-Men movie, beating X-Men: The Last Stand with 102.7 million. moviefone.com

Oil production set to freeze Crude oil futures have been consistently falling so far in 2016, which has proved helpful and problematic. The USA is simultaneously the world’s top oil producer, importer and consumer of oil. It is great for consumers because they can save money on gasoline and use it elsewhere in the economy, or it can prove harmful if they choose to save it.

It becomes tough to understand, looking back. However, the freeze coming from Russia and Saudi Arabia who are looking for help from other OPEC producers will see an increase in oil prices.

NBA All-Star Weekend has its ups and downs The NBA All-Star Weekend, taking place in Toronto, Canada this year, gave Toronto the opportunity to showcase itself to the rest of the NBA. However, below freezing temperatures for the weekend made it difficult for people to get around and see the vibrancy of the city. Other backlash came towards Nelly Furtado who received much disappointment for her rendition of “O Canada.” Russell Westbrook and Michael Jordan were the biggest winners of the weekend. Westbrook was able to continue to show his athleticism and personality and took home the MVP award.

Michael Jordan, who retired 13 years ago, still maintains himself as the biggest star of the sport. He presented the honors to his Charlotte Hornets as next year’s All-Star Weekend hosts.

‘No way out’ of enjoying the newest ‘Walking Dead’ premiere Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu SPOILERS The Mid-season premier of “The Walking Dead” left many of their fans dead as well. I know I walked around like a zombie after the mind-blowing episode ended. But after the undoubtedly best episode they’ve shown so far, we’re left to pick up the pieces of our brains... and some of the characters as well.

The episode began literally with a bang as we were reminded of how awesome Daryl really is as he shoots a bazooka at Negan’s group. Who is Negan? We still don’t know.

But whatever else happens next is forgotten because we’re brought back to Rick and his group, covered in zombie entrails, slowly making their way through the hoard that has invaded Alexandria.

The first part of the season ended with Sam seeking his mother’s attention at the worst possible time. However, we find out that it isn’t at this moment that his supreme wimpiness is a problem. In “The Talking Dead,” Jesse’s achilles’ heal was discussed, and it’s revealed that this is Sam’s weakness. She coddles him, and does so again when he refuses to leave her, thus dooming them all.

Sam chokes as they’re walking, and soon he and his mother are dead, with Jesse’s arm being chopped off by a pained Rick in order to save his own son. Ron aimed a gun at Rick but was soon stabbed through by Michonne, and Carl got shot in the eye by Ron’s stray bullet. This was all far too soon in the episode for my brain to comprehend what I had just witnessed.

On “The Talking Dead,” they said they made of dummy of Chandler Riggs (Carl) so they could show the depth of his eye wound. They didn’t want any doubt that his eye was gone. They superimposed the image of the dummy’s wound on Riggs’ face for the first showing of the wound but from then on, we only see the dummy. Which is a relief for Andrew Lincoln (Rick) because he had to run while carrying Carl through the streets. (A dummy is much easier to carry than a real person.)

Rick didn’t handle Carl’s injury well. He goes on a zombie-killing spree. Although he was nuts for doing it, he inspired the rest of the Alexandrians to come out of their homes and start fighting as well. This started an epic fight scene where I was sure someone was going to die. There was no way they were all going to make it out of this.

As if this wasn’t enough, we finally got to see Maggie and Glenn reunite - kind of.

They had a hoard of zombies and a platform separating them. Then Glenn just had to put himself in another situation where I was sure he was going die again. I kept screaming, “I can’t go through that again!” over and over again. My roommate had to come check on my sanity as I cowered under my blanket. Glenn must have some guardian angel though, because he got out of another scrape and is still alive.

The episode ended with Daryl setting the lake on fire like Prometheus, giving the humans this tool to survive. The fire drew the zombies’ attention, set many on fire and let the Alexandrians kill the rest from behind.

This episode was a ride from beginning to end that kept everyone on their toes. I don’t think anyone made it through that episode without some kind of exclamation. When I first heard that the mid-season premiere was an exciting one, I did not expect this but it was so worth it. I wish I could watch it again for the first time because it was such a great experience.

Get clubbin’ Sims fans, ‘Get Together’ is a must have expansion Mike Eubanks Staff Writer mae7020@lhup.edu With all of the stuff packs coming out for “The Sims 4,” it’s a good idea to look back at the last big release of the game.

“The Sims 4: Get Together“ is the second expansion pack for the “Sims 4,” and it was released on Dec. 8. It is now available in both digital and retail box versions.

While the pack is not the most cohesive in terms of content, it does provide new diversions that will keep the franchise’s diverse player base entertained until the next content release.

The expansion requires the base game to play, so this review assumes some familiarity with the franchise.

As the title implies, this pack expands the social options for the game’s digital inhabitants. It accomplishes this primarily through the addition of clubs, which are semi-permanent groups formed around common interests.

The clubs themselves are extremely flexible, and they add an element of

gameplay customization that is new to the series. The clubs can also earn perks, similar to the base game’s reward traits, which improves the gameplay in various ways.

The clubs also add a layer of management for the player, so they are a mixed enhancement.

The pack also adds a decent amount of content to the build mode of the game. Those who like the creative elements of the game will have plenty of new options to toy around with. In addition to the build content, the expansion also adds a new neighborhood and some additional public lot types.

On the downside, the new pack brings new bugs and glitches to the mix.

While most of them are not game breaking, some of them are annoying and pervasive. The team does a fairly good job of addressing the technical issues in regular patches, but the current state of the title is definitely not bug free.

“Get Together” is a decent pack which adds enough to the core game to justify its price. Like all Sims expansions, the new content is heavily integrated into the existing game.

Given the mixed reception of the Sims 4, this pack is unlikely to change anyone’s mind. For those who like the base game, however, “Get Together” is highly recommended.

Saturday, Feb. 20 7pm.: HAC Big Screen Movie!

Disney Pixar’s newest movie, “The Good Dinosaur” will be showing in Price Auditorium as an amazing follow up to “Straight Outta Compton.”

Directed by Peter Sohn, this movie is set in a world where dinosaurs and humans live side-by-side. An Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend and learns the power of confronting his fears. In doing this, he learns what he is truly capable of.

Aarron Coleman Columnist arc5059@lhup.edu The long awaited “Deadpool” premiered on Feb. 12, and oh boy was it worth the wait. “Deadpool” tells the story of how Wade Wilson came to be the gun wielding, sword slashing, potty-mouthed anti-hero we all have grown to love.

Accompanied by catchy hip-hop throw backs, director Tim Miller takes viewers on a non-stop joy ride filled with the inappropriate humor and ruthless violence that all of us comic geeks worship.

Suited up in a red and black leather disguise, Ryan Reynolds played our “not-really-a-hero” hero. Whether it was gracing us with his sarcasm or enlightening us with his dark humor, Reynolds captured every aspect of Deadpool, proving to all that there was no one more suited for the role.

Miller delivered the plot well enough that we got a sense of who Deadpool was and what he sought out to do. Keeping the audience’s attention on that particular part of the plot would have to be one of Miller’s strong suits. Knowing that he is a comic book character, Deadpool talks directly to the audience, commenting on

the progressing story and even making jokes worthy of writing down to use ourselves later.

However, the plot was not strong enough to shed light on the supporting characters, leaving many unanswered questions such as who some of the characters were and where they came from? Adding characters like Colossus from the X-Men, which many audience members are familiarized with, the newer characters like Angel Dust and Negasonic Teenage Warhead (try saying that five times fast) were not given as much of a background as I would have hoped.

Instead, very little information is divulged to the viewers, but with awesome names like Negasonic Teenage Warhead, more background information is DEMANDED! This problem could also be because of the length of the movie, I found that it was relatively short compared with recent blockbuster superhero movies. With such amazing action sequences and hysterical innuendos, at the end of the movie, I couldn’t help but ask myself “is it over already?”

Hopefully the movie’s anticipated sequel will do a better job at covering its bases. Despite all of its shortcomings, the movie was amazing. I would rate it 4.5 eagles out of 5, truly a must see for all the other “true believers” out there.

No one is more iconic than the King of Pop, Michael Jackson. His albums are so memorable that even now they’re being re-issued with stories to tell at over 90 minutes each. We saw it when the legendary “Bad 25” (2012) anniversary edition hit, and it’s happening again with 1979’s “Off the Wall.”

On Feb. 26, “Off the Wall” is being re-issued with a bonus this time, a new documentary directed by Spike Lee, titled “Michael Jackson’s Journey From Motown to Off the Wall.” Lee directed the last highly anticipated Michael Jackson documentary, “Bad 25,” so this one is sure to be just as amazing.

The documentary landed a spot at the Sundance Festival on Jan. 24 where it premiered for the first time. It then went on to premiere on Showtime last Friday and now, for everyone else to see, it’s coming to CD/Blu-ray and CD/ DVD. Both versions are currently available on Amazon for pre-order.

“Off the Wall” was a turning point in a 20-year-old Jackson’s life. It was meant to establish him as an adult superstar and it was the very beginning of a journey to separate himself from his brothers and to become the solo artist he longed to be. In the late ‘70s, Jackson was at risk, like so many others, of becoming what is known as a ‘has-been’ child star. To prevent that from happening, Jackson felt it was time to reinvent himself in sound and personality.

Jackson sought out the help of a well established Quincy Jones, who had worked with him previously on 1978’s “The Wiz.” When Jones accepted his offer, the two took the first steps to a long-standing and successful working relationship.

The two worked tirelessly on the album and, once it hit store shelves, it launched a powerful debut to Jackson’s adult career. Featuring a mixture of disco, pop, R&B and soft rock, it ushered in what is now known as the modern era of pop music.

The legendary album produced two No. 1 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 and became the first album from a solo artist to put four songs in the top 10 of the Hot 100.

It seems fitting that 35 years later we’re honoring an album of such a high magnitude by exploring the inner workings of the process behind the scenes. To explore the various creative depths of this gem, archival footage of Jackson will be provided as well as contemporary interviews with his family, Lee Daniels, The Weeknd, Pharrell, John Legend, Questlove and tons of other musicians. It’s shaping up to be an unforgettable experience. (But then, what Michael Jackson project isn’t?)

Couldn’t make it to the Sundance Festival? Missed it on Showtime? Then be sure to snag a copy from stores or online because MJ fans all over won’t be disappointed by this tribute. We can only wonder what Jackson would say or how he’d feel if he could see the overwhelming love his work is receiving today.

Student of the Week: Melissa’s moving forward Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu

address things like safe sex and safe drinking practices with events around campus. She spends a lot of time at the REC as well because she’s on in intramural dodgeball team, so someone go check out a game!

Melissa’s friends also described her as hard working which is totally understandable because she spent her snow day studying, taking quizzes and doing homework. That’s admirable because I spent my day accomplishing nothing.

She at least got errands done.

Melissa is a type-1 diabetic and she says that it’s made her more adaptable but it hasn’t really affected her life in a major way. She seems so chill about it, though, I know you have to be a strong person to have that in your life. There’s a lot to admire about Melissa and for some, it might be because of her football team of choice. She’s a big Patriots fan.

She likes to spend her time outdoors and enjoys hiking. So maybe when she finally gets to go on her dream vacation to Hawaii, she’ll hike up the mountains.

Or she’ll spend her time on the beaches, sipping a piña colada and sightseeing.

Finally, if Melissa had a million dollars she’d buy a Cadillac Escalade, pay off her debt and make a donation to the American Diabetes Association. For only being a sophomore, Melissa seems sure of herself and her goals, but look out because even she said that she’s always scheming something up.

Name: Melissa Myers Year: Sophomore Major: Health Science Pre Physical Therapy This week’s student of the week was easy to find because she was sitting at the table next to mine and her friends immediately called her out to be interviewed, but for good reason. Melissa’s friends describe her as a high energy girl, who’s always up to something new which I could totally understand after learning more about her.

She majors in pre-physical therapy because her goals for the future include opening her own physical therapy practice somewhere close to home. This is definitely the right path for her because her favorite class is Anatomy and Physiology. Melissa enjoys it because she finds the body interesting and likes to see how everything works. She wants to be able to help people and make them better with this kind of knowledge.

On campus, she’s the Vice President of Safe Haven, a club dedicated to promoting health and wellness around campus. They

So after some lengthy research, it is safe to say my roommates should start sleeping with one eye open from now on. Most pranks are either too complicated or I am too lazy to follow through with them but I have made a list of some easy and harmless pranks that will break through some of your mid semester stress.

Switch cereal bags:

This isn’t anything too diabolical and all you need is two different boxes of cereal. Just switch the bags inside and watch your roommate’s confusion when they go to pour their favorite cereal and get the opposite.

Taped Sensor:

Put a piece of paper and some tape over the sensor on a remote or wireless mouse, and then sit back and watch the struggle.

Surprise Bowl:

Mix a bag of M&Ms with a bag of skittles and a bag of Reese’s Pieces in a big bowl. Your roommate won’t know what hit them.

Or you could step it up with some pranks that require a little extra effort but it can be worth it as long as you know your roommate will be okay with these shenanigans.

Balloon Party:

For this, you need a couple of trash bags, some tape and a bunch of balloons. Tear the trash bags in half and tape them together to make a tarp then tape the bottom of the tarp to the door frame to make a pouch and start filling it with a balloons. Then tape up the top and wait. Once the door opens, the person will be showered in an avalanche of balloons and who can be mad about that.

Toilet Paper the bed:

This isn’t something you should do unless you know your roommate will react well but it can be hilarious. While your roommate is sleeping wrap them AND their bed in toilet paper. When they wake up, they will be stuck and hopefully after they get themselves unstuck they will have a good laugh.

Plastic wrap or wrapping paper:

You could even take it a step further and wrap their whole room in either plastic wrap or wrapping paper. This can be time consuming but also pretty funny for everyone involved just remember to recycle all of that paper after.

So keep your roommates on their toes this semester, and get creative.

Dual majoring isn’t as scary as it sounds Kristi Bechdel Staff Writer knb3859@lhup.edu

College is an exciting time in our lives. It’s when we discover ourselves. But when you think of college, you think of picking one major. You might switch majors because during your college career you found that you have an interest in another subject. Another possibility is instead of switching majors, you could add a second major and become a dual major.

Dual majoring is becoming common around LHU. I have been a dual major since my freshman year of college. I am currently a senior majoring in secondary social studies and special education.

These two majors go well together because this has become a common occurrence in the education department. If you want to major in special education, then you will be dual majoring. I can speak from experience saying it is not as hard as it sounds.

Now granted you have to take more courses than a single major but it’s worth it in the end. In the education department, I know many dual majors from elementary, middle and secondary education fields.

This can also make you more marketable when it’s time to graduate college.

I know some dual majors who are graduating on time but I know others including myself that will be graduating a semester late. When I think

about that, I realize graduating a semester late with two degrees is not that bad of a goal.

Instead of choosing majors that coincide well like mine, some student’s dual majors have nothing in common. Amanda Thomas, is a senior majoring in English and business administration, two majors with no overlapping classes. Thomas says, “I have two completely different majors and yet with a little extra work, I’m still only graduating a semester late.” As long as you do the work, take some summer classes and take more than fifteen credits a semester on occasion, graduating on time or a semester late is possible. Even if you graduate a year late, you’re still graduating with two degrees and a lot of accomplishments to be proud of.

Dual majoring is an amazing experience.

Yes, we may have extra work but we are doing what makes us happy. Not only have I been a dual major since freshmen year, I’ve also maintained a steady job. Having a job and dual majoring has made me a more organized person and has helped me be able to handle more situations that come my way.

If you are not sure, you can talk to your advisor about dual majoring, and they’ll help you figure out a new track to follow. If you want to dual major, don’t be afraid that you can’t handle it because with a little work it is possible.

Step 1: Sleep

Catch up on the sleep you haven’t gotten in weeks but don’t overdo it. Reset your alarm somewhere between 10 and noon if you’re someone who loves to and can sleep late. If you’re one of those people who wake up early naturally or just can’t sleep once they’re awake, I’m sorry, proceed to step two.

Eat the breakfast (or lunch/brunch) that you haven’t had time for. Go to Bentley or stay home and make yourself a big meal full of deliciousness.

Move on to step three.

Step 3: Homework

Get right to your homework so you don’t have to worry about it. Catch up, get your work done. Don’t worry about getting ahead today, it’s a snow day. Just get caught up. Proceed to step four. If you’re someone who likes being ahead of everything, keep working; you’re someone to be admired but I’m going onto step four as soon as I get my stuff done.

Step 4: Catch up on life

You’ve procrastinated everything else, now get those errands done. Go to Walmart for food so you don’t starve for the rest of the semester when you don’t have time to go. Go pick up your prescriptions so you don’t die. Take out the trash before you die of fumigation. Do some cleaning because we’re all disgusting and now you have time to rectify that. Once the to-do list you’ve been putting off is complete, move onto step five.

Step 5: Relax

Have a movie planned for the next snow day.

Have it ready to go for when the cancellation god smiles down upon you. If you don’t like movies, make sure you have a book handy because it’s time to snuggle under the blanket and dive into a new world. Not a reader? Guess what? You

now have the rest of the day to play that video game you don’t have time for or do whatever it is you love to do. How about a craft? If there’s enough snow on the ground (come on, Winter! I believe in you!), you are required by law to make a snowman. I read that somewhere, I swear.

Step 6: Don’t make dinner

Order out. The school says it’s not safe to go outside so don’t. Hire someone else to make and bring your dinner to you. Chinese anyone? How about some pizza? It’s now your time to relax so who wants to actually cook?

If you have a plan for the next snow day, you’ll definitely make the most of it.

Who didn’t love this week’s snow day? Waking up to that text or email was the best thing to happen to all of us this semester, I’m sure of it.

College snow days are a little bit more magical than elementary, middle or high school snow days because they’re practically the physical manifestation of the Lord. They’re a sign from the heavens that you need and deserve a break.

But what do you do on this campus-wide holiday?

Unfortunately, college snow days aren’t like the snow days of the past where you had all your homework done and didn’t need to do one spec of schoolwork. College snow days are a little different. These are the days we spend catching up on all the work we procrastinated. They’re a break in the space-time continuum so you can have a few more hours to get that paper done or actually do the reading that was due that day.

But if you plan everything right, you can have the best snow day. Here’s the plan:

E-cigs worry the FDA: Are they still the better option?

Aminesh Chavan Staff Writer ajc3349@lhup.edu There is a new trend now which is ubiquitous almost everywhere you go. I am talking about the use of E-Cigs, aka “vaping.” To those who do not have any idea about them, electronic cigarettes (e-cigs) are battery powered vaporizers that stimulate the feeling of smoking but without the need of tobacco by allowing users to inhale aerosol (vapor), containing nicotine with a range of flavors. The majority of people who use e-cigs have turned to them as a nicotine replacement or a “safer” alternative to smoking cigarettes.

Unfortunately, there is a growing concern within the FDA and the office of the Surgeon General over e-cigs. The concern is not as much about the e-cig but rather the “worry” is focused on the chemical makeup of the 7,700+ flavors of e-cigarettes currently on the market. The common chemical found in these flavorings by researchers at Harvard University are 2,3-pentanedione, acetoin and diacetyl. The researchers are now calling for “urgent action” due to evidence of respiratory problems in users. The chemicals destroy

the lungs’ tiniest airways, leading to scar tissue buildup that blocks airflow within the lungs. This can result in a permanent and usually fatal lung condition known as Bronchiolitis Obliterans.

The unfortunate part is that the FDA cannot make a strong case to have some type of regulatory infrastructure for the e-cig flavoring. This is perplexing to some because of all the supporting research and data. Even though most research has found the same harmful chemicals in their analysis of e-cig flavorings, the results from these various studies have not been consistent in the concentration of the harmful chemicals.

This means the brands and companies in the e-cig industry can sell the flavoring without disclosing what is in them to the FDA or even having a warning label like “WARNING CONTAINS HARMFUL CHEMICALS” for the consumers. There is no transparency for the consumer, leaving them in the dark even though the product may maybe harmful to their health immediately or long-term. So even though e-cigs may seem like a “better” alternative to regular cigarette, it does come with its own risk.

The man behind the mask Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu Have you ever thought about who was the Bald Eagle at all LHU sporting events? The answer to that question is me.

You’re probably wondering why I choose to reveal one of the biggest mysteries on campus.

The reason is because I’m retiring. Even though I really don’t want to, I feel like this is the time to move on and prepare for the real world before graduating next semester. These past two years has been the best years of my life. The cheerleaders have been spectacular and the atmosphere I brought by being in a tail-feather is amazing. Even though this isn’t a paying job, it feels great to bring joy to people, which is what I crave.

I know I’m not nearly as good as some college mascots like the Nittany Lion at Penn State, the Owl at Temple or even the Blue Devil at Duke, but that doesn’t matter. All that matters to me is that I’m good at what I do and I have enjoyed every minute of it, even when the little kids at a game

would hit my tail or pull on my feathers.

One thing that is tough about being a mascot is the demand and commitment. For example, I have been writing for the Eagle Eye for the last three years, currently as a sports writer. I found it difficult to maintain my position on the paper while being the mascot. I suppose that’s why I was not promoted to sports editor. I had to make sacrifices in order to do what I love.

As the Bald Eagle, I had to keep my identity to couldn’t say a word about my job to any fan, only my supervisor. You also can’t tell anybody that you are the mascot except your family or roommates or anybody that you are close to; but now that I’m retiring, I might as well tell everybody what I have been doing.

Another thing about being the mascot is that every mascot makes mistakes. I certainly have made mistakes like bumping into someone and making them drop their hot dog; but that’s life.

Everybody makes mistakes. When they happen, you just have to move on and continue what you do.

Just make sure it doesn’t happen again and buy the man another hot dog.

But there is one thing I will remember for

the rest of my life: entertaining the children. I absolutely love bringing joy to people, especially the little ones. When I see a kid get excited about seeing the Bald Eagles, I am overjoyed. The best memory I have, as shown below, was about a week ago at a basketball game when I saw a little girl in a Bald Eagle sweater. I was so close to getting down on my knees to cry because she was so adorable. The cheerleaders also noticed the little eagle and we all decided to take a photo with her.

I don’t know where she got the eagle sweater, but I want to get one for my future children if I have any.

To close this out, if there is anybody who wants to be the Bald Eagle next year, I strongly encourage you to do so. Even though it’s not a paying job, you will make friends and memories that will last a lifetime.You can either talk to me via email or talk to the Sports Information Director, Doug Spatafore, at the Thomas Field House.

Victim blaming at LHU Meghan Maustellar Staff Writer mlm6713@lhup.edu On Saturday, Feb. 6, a timely warning was delivered to Lock Haven University students and faculty regarding a sexual assault as required under the “Timely Notice” provisions of the Federal Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act of 1998.

However, underneath the incident summary, there is a section of “Precautionary Steps,” which states, “Students should always keep in mind that consuming alcoholic beverages or other drugs could impair their abilities to make good decisions. If you choose to consume alcoholic beverages, do it responsibly.”

According to the Department of Justice website, sexual assault is defined as “any type of sexual contact or behavior that occurs without the explicit consent of the recipient.”

Under the most recent definitions of consent, a person is unable to give consent if they are under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Not only does the precautionary statement supplied by the university seemingly place the responsibility of the act on the victim rather than the

perpetrator, it also clearly disregards the increasingly popular concept of “yes means yes,” which requires affirmative, conscious and voluntary consent; a concept LHU has still not adopted into their policies.

As a university that strives to ensure that the it maintains a safe and healthy environment on campus for students, LHU needs to be aware of the way their statements affect their student population. Statistically, one in five women and one in 16 men are sexually assaulted while in college, with over 90% of sexual assaults remaining unreported. By promoting statements and policies that encourage victim-blaming, the university is effectively discouraging students from reporting cases of sexual assault at even higher rates than are currently occurring.

Not only does LHU have students who are survivors of sexual assault, but in the future there will undoubtedly be more sexual assault cases that occur involving students.

The university’s statements about sexual assault prevention are offensive, discouraging and insensitive to sexual assault survivors. In the case of sexual assault, the victim is never to blame.

Rather than warning students about the effect alcohol has on decisionmaking, the university should remind students that sexual assault is a crime and sexual assault offenders should be treated in accordance with their actions.

The NBA held it’s annual All Star event this past weekend with a wide variety of events.

It all starts out with the NBA all star celebrity game, the rising stars skills challenge, the NBA D-League all star game, the skills challenge, the three point contest, the dunk contest and then the doozy of them all the NBA All-Star game.

Sure, the dunk contest did make a comeback this year, and credit is deserved where credit is due. With

the three point contest, we saw two teammates, Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, battle it out. Even in the skills challenge, we saw a big man win the competition, Karl-Anthony Towns.

Those were all the pre-events.

They were supposed to be the “hype” for one of the “best all star games we were going to see.” This was going to be the legend, Kobe “Bean” Bryant’s going out party, and this game was going to embrace his competitive style.

NOPE. DIDN’T HAPPEN. We saw the worst display of an All-Star game since I can remember in my life watching the games.

Everybody and their brother were

just launching three’s. The west team alone shot 80 three pointers.

EIGHTY. In a single game.

Usually there is a little defense played and the game gets intense for a stretch.

Not this year. No intensity at all, yet I thought “Eh, maybe we will see something.”

Kobe vs. LeBron? Nope LeBron slapped the floor like a little girl and laughed and joked with Kobe.

This was the worst game I have ever watched.

If you were a paying fan, wouldn’t you want to see the “best players in the world” actually compete against each other? Not just throwing easy lob dunks and shooting uncontested

shots for the whole game.

The whole premise of the game was a joke. Why even hold the game if the players aren’t going to show off their skills?

The players should want to go out and play hard against the best out there. If the players are so good and always “want to play for titles against the best,” why not show up and prove you are the best player in the biggest spotlight when all the other “all stars” are there watching?

Because someone said “Sweet, the All-Star game is on tonight. I can’t wait to watch. It should be a great game.”

Retro recordings are real

Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu Music lovers enjoy its sound, hipsters pretend they know everything about it and business people are seeing another peak in sales after many years: I’m calling this one, The Great Vinyl Debate!

After many years of slow sales, teenagers and young adults have brought back record players and vinyl. Personally, I’m cool with this decision since I’ve been obsessed from a young age.

So a little background for those who don’t know much about vinyl; there are three main sizes 78, 45 and 33 1/3 revolutions per minute or RPM. The different sizes determine how many turns per minute the vinyl makes on the turntable. The most common size is 33 1/3 RPM because it holds 40 to 60 minutes of music in total while 45 RPM only holds about five minutes per side. 78 RPM is not a frequent occurrence.

Many artists will put their ‘singles’ out on 45’s and their full album out on 33 1/3’s. This was only until the compact disc or, I’m sorry we don’t use that term, ‘CD’ took over in the 1990’s.

The debate is which sounds better, vinyl or CD? I’ll say what a lot of people will disagree with, vinyl sounds better.

People who grew up listening to CDs, like myself, will usually always go with CDs sounding

better because that is what we know. But, I’m here to say that records are the real deal.

If you want genuine sounding, warm music flowing into your ears, then a vinyl is exactly what you need. The raw voices coming from a turntable are irreplaceable.

CDs are great because they give off a clean sound with no mistakes and the music can be downloaded to a computer or phone.

I have a huge problem with the clean sound, however. Auto-tune is used entirely too much and the clean sound we hear is not the actual voice of the artist most times.

How many of you have gone to a concert and got disappointed because the artists doesn’t sound as good in person or they use autotune on stage?

Yeah, I’ve been there too.

Records are a more true representation of what an artist sounds like.

Granted, records are more sophisticated these days and auto-tune is included on them now, but that’s another opinion for another day.

Now that I’ve stated my opinion on vinyl vs.

CD, let’s talk about the

twenty-first century voices that belong on vinyl.

Let’s face it, some voices are just better than others and can perform a raw set and sound amazing! The first person who comes to mind is Adele.

Adele sounds the same on CD, vinyl and live; this is a truly amazing feat! Some other artists that can pull off vinyl quite well are Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran, John Legend and Duffy. All of these people can sing, and I mean actually sing, without autotune, with only a band backing them up, just themselves and a microphone.

If you are one of those people who have a record player just for fun, take a minute and actually appreciate the sounds coming from your turntable.

Hilliard, Mealing leading playoff push Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Four wins in the last five games have the Lock Haven University women’s basketball team in a prime position to capture the back-to-back Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoff berths for the first time since the 1989-90 and 1990-91 seasons.

An 8-12 conference record currently has the women in the sixth and final playoff spot in the east division with multiple clinching scenarios. They could finish tied for fourth, fifth, sixth or miss the playoffs entirely.

The fourth and fifth spots in the division are currently occupied

by Bloomsburg (clinched a berth) and East Stroudsburg. Kutztown has the seventh spot and is the only team that could bounce Lock Haven from the playoffs.

Head coach Jennifer Smith’s team sat at 4-11 in PSAC play entering their Jan. 30 contest at Mansfield and the team has gone 4-1 since then.

The play of senior guard J.J. Hilliard and senior forward Lysa Mealing has been a major factor in the team’s improved play of late.

Over the stretch, Hilliard has averaged 14.2 points per game (PPG), 5.4 rebounds per game (RPG) and 4.8 assists per game (APG). Her performances against Cheyney and Bloomsburg earned her PSAC East Athlete of the Week honors.

It was against Cheyney that she matched a career-high with 25 points in a 71-56 victory.

As for Mealing, all she has done is continue to lead the nation in rebounding for Division II players. As of Feb. 15, she is averaging 13.3 RPG, which is slightly ahead of the 13.2 that Jackie Beathea (Southern Connecticut State) and Lady Walker (Virginia Union) are averaging.

Mealing has averaged 10.8 PPG and 14.8 RPG over her last five and that includes a school-record 25 rebounds against Kutztown. The previous school-record for a single game was 22. Not to be overlooked, she has also produced two 17 rebound games in that same stretch.

The team has two games left in the regular season and they are both on the road. Shippensburg (18-6, 14-6 PSAC) is the penultimate regular season game and the finale is against East Stroudsburg (11-12, 9-10 PSAC).

MBB in playoffs for third consecutive season Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Six seniors took the court at Thomas Fieldhouse for the final time on Feb. 13, but they were able to do so knowing they clinched a playoff berth for the third straight season, which has not been accomplished since the 1988-90 seasons.

Al Blount, Tracy Peal, Elijah Cooper, Julian Bond, Lamin Fulton and Dave Garcia were honored before the game, but the emotion of the day was unable to lead the Bald Eagles to a victory over the Huskies of Bloomsburg.

Head coach Mike Nestor’s team played Bloomsburg close in the second half (46-44), but the 50-32 deficit that was established in the first half was too much to overcome.

With 8:05 left in the first half, Bloomsburg was up four, 27-23, but, from that point on, Lock Haven only made three field goals to close out the first

half. Over that same period of time, Bloomsburg went 7-14 from the field and went 8-8 on their free throws.

For the game, the Huskies shot 33-55 (60.0 percent) from the floor and 8-13 (61.5 percent) from three-point range.

Junior Brahieme Jackson did yeoman’s work in the defeat posting a team-high in points (27 on 10/14 FG), rebounds (12), assists (3) and steals (3).

Jackson’s performance earned him his fourth double-double this season and his points and rebounds were the most for a Bald Eagle this season.

Ra’eese Hunt, who has scored double-digit points in three straight games, continues to see an increase in his minutes. Hunt has seven starts this season with six coming in the last eight games. He did not draw the start against Bloomsburg, but still played 26 minutes.

The Bald Eagles’ final two games of the regular season are on the road against Shippensburg (Feb. 17) and East Stroudsburg (Feb. 20). Shippensburg is currently fifth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East division and East Stroudsburg maintains the third spot.

Coburn dazzles in 800 to lead way in Boston Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University men’s indoor track & field team came into the weekend ranked No. 3 in the Atlantic Region and the Bald Eagles once again flexed their muscle at the David Hemery Valentine Invitational, hosted by Boston University.

Alex Coburn turned in a performance to remember in the 800-meter event. He clocked a time of 1:53.91, finishing 34th out of 247 runners. The time is the second-fastest time in school history and just missed an NCAA Division II provisional mark.

Coburn’s time is one of the fastest times run this season in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Addison Monroe was outstanding in the 5,000-meter run.

He clocked a personal-best time of 14:48.31, which just missed an NCAA mark. It’s the eighth-fastest time in school history.

Thrower Lamier Dodson turned in a tremendous effort in the weight throw, finishing 15th out of 38 with a PSAC and season-best throw of 50-08.00.

Tyler Burger’s remarkable season continued today. Burger shined at 200 meters and clocked a time of 22:43, which is the seventh-fastest time in LHU history. The PR is a PSAC qualifying mark.

The 200-meter event treated LHU well, as Ryan Cruz clocked a personal-best and PSAC mark with a time of 22:68.

Cruz added a PSAC mark in the 400 as well with a time of 50.32.

Sean Weidner clocked a PR in the mile with a PSAC time of 4:17.73.

Mitchell Coakley clocked a personal-best and PSAC time in the 800-meter run with a time of 1:57.93.

LHU returns to action Saturday, Feb. 20 at the Marc Deneault Invitational, hosted by Cornell (10 a.m.).

Addison Monroe ran a personal-best 14:48:31 in the 5,000 meter run. The mark was the eight-fastest in Lock Haven history.

Wrestling defeats Michigan State for first time in school history Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu

It’s finally happened; Lock Haven has beaten Michigan State. The Lock Haven wrestling team (8-9) celebrated senior night last Friday (Feb. 12) at the Thomas Fieldhouse with a very impressive victory over the Spartans of Michigan State (1-13) with a final score of 18-15. The win is the team’s first over Michigan State. The Spartans won the first three meetings between the two squads.

Before the official start of the match, Lock Haven honored its seniors, who each won their bouts to secure the victory. The match started with MSU’s Mitch Rogaliner earning a 9-3 victory over Jake Field. At 133 pounds, No. 33 Bobby Rehm earned a 8-7 victory over MSU’s Garth Yender to tie the match at 3-3.

At 141 pounds, LHU’s Cody Wheeler lost a tough match to No. 21 Javier Gasca. No. 18 Dan Neff gave Lock Haven the lead with a 23-8 technical fall over Kaelan Richards.

History had been made twice in this contest.

Not only did Lock Haven beat Michigan State, but 157-pounder Aaron McKinney became the newest member of the LHU 100-win club with a 4-0 victory over Mark Bozzo. Neff, Rehm and McKinney have joined the 100-win club within the last month.

McKinney is now the 19th Bald Eagle to achieve the honor.

The Spartans ended the losing streak by winning the next three matches thanks to Dean Vettese over Cody Cordes at 165, Travis Curley over Tyler Wood at 174 and Shwan Shadaia over Tristan Sponseller at 184.

At 197 LHU’s Phil Sprenkle earned an impressive 11-0 major decision to tie the match at 15-15 with one match left to go.

For the first time since Dec. 29, LHU Junior Brad Emerick was back in action at a time where the team really needed him. Emerick didn’t disappoint the home crowd by earning a 3-0 victory over Dimitrius Renfroe to give Lock Haven its first ever win over the Spartans and the first over a Big Ten opponent since 2002. Emerick’s performance earned him Eastern Wrestling League Athlete of the Week honors.

Lock Haven will travel to Fairfax, Va. to take on the Patriots of George Mason University. Even though this was senior night, it’s not the last event at the Thomas Fieldhouse. Lock Haven University will host the EWL Conference Championships at the Thomas Fieldhouse on Saturday, March 5 starting at 10:00 a.m.
