Saving over 560 lives: LHU recieves American Red Cross Outstanding Achievement Award Joshua Cenderelli Staff Writer jxc3298@lhup.edu During the first blood drive of the semester, the American Red Cross Blood Services Manager, Marge Smith, presented Lock Haven University with the 2015 Outstanding Achievement Award for University of the year.

The American Red Cross is an organization that provides help in disaster relief, supporting of military families, health and safety services, international services and collection of lifesaving blood. ARC collects more than five million blood donations each year, providing over 2,000 hospitals nationwide with blood products.

Smith, who presented the award states, “This award is new with ARC this year and I nominated LHU because of all the reasons I stated. Where I think LHU shines the most is recruitment of donors, which is the most important thing for us. LHU makes their goals every time but they step-up recruiting on the day of the blood drive, with students getting in our blood drop

costume, going out on the campus, sending tweets, Facebook, etc. and brings in the walk-in donors. It amazes me every time. We have many great university blood drives but LHU shines above them because LHU makes it happen! It all comes down to great leadership & LHU does!”

University director for Community service, Lauren Wright, says “The support from Students, staff, faculty and community members has been wonderful! Many of the volunteers go beyond simply helping recruit blood donors; they will offer their time and assist with our ‘recovery table’ after

people donate blood to make sure they are hydrated and feeling well.”

LHU student, Skyler Ruf founded the LHU Red Cross Student Chapter last year; a club open to all students and the current chapter president is Stephanie Rosenberg.

According to Wright, The Red Cross has a merit system, which includes several factors. Those factors are; number of blood drivers per year, number of units collected per drive, number of times making goal (based on a 3 drive average) per year, student recruitment, promotion through campus, student volunteer system and ARC club. LHU outshined the rest of the schools in the Pennsylvania state system.

Wright says, “Our September 15 and 16 Blood Drive results were 89 on Wednesday and 99 on Thursday, saving up to 564 lives. One unit of blood may save up to 3 lives.”

The Blood Drive was organized by LHU Global MountainServe. Wright, the community service manager at MountainServe informs us that, “LHU’s MountainServe Center for Community Service partners with the students, staff, faculty and community nonprofit agencies to enhance academic, personal and professional development through community engagement experiences.”

LHU’s next blood drive is on December 2 and 3 from noon until 6 p.m. at the Student Recreation Center.

Author of ‘Guyland’ to visit Lock Haven Michael Kimmel, sociologist and author of Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men (2008), is coming to Lock Haven on November 4 to give a presentation.

Three LHU students who attended the 2015 PASSHE Women’s Consortium Undergraduate Leadership Institute at the McKeever Environmental Center organized Dr. Kimmel’s visit. As part of their scholarship, the students are asked to host a campus-wide event sharing what they learned at the Leadership Institute. The 2015 scholarship recipients, Felicia Baker, Diosanny Rivera and Meghan Mausteller, are bringing Kimmel to campus. The President’s office and the President’s Commission on the Status of Women (PCSW) funded their attendance at the Leadership Institute.

Dr. Kimmel will be speaking about his book, Guyland. In his speech, Kimmel will discuss why young adults today take longer to transition to a complete adulthood. He refers to the time in between being a teenager and an adult as “Guyland.” In his book, Kimmel references over 400 interviews with young people to help understand why young adults today, particularly “guys,” spend so much time in this in-between phase.

Distinguished professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University, Dr. Kimmel is the author of over 20 books and has spoken at more than 300 colleges and universities.

Dr. Kimmel will present at 7 p.m. in Price Auditorium on Wednesday, November 4. Books will be available for signing and there will be a Q&A following the presentation.

Taxes on gas goes up: Restore cuts on higher education since 2011 Joanna Harlow Reporter ejh1498@lhup.edu Regulations and taxes on the natural gas industry continue to be a hotly contested issue at the state level. A key element of the budget deadlock is Governor Tom Wolf’s call for passing a severance tax on natural gas. Wolf has proposed a five percent severance tax on natural gas production most of which will go towards education.

The budget proposal would invest $15 million generated through a commonsense severance tax on gas drilling into the commonwealth’s community colleges. According to a Pennsylvania Department of Education press release, the funding will restore 75 percent of cuts made to community colleges since 2011. Overall, Wolf’s budget plan restores higher education cuts by providing$140.9 million more in funding to community colleges, PASSHE universities and state-related universities.

On Sept. 29th, more than 150 representatives of the gas drilling industry, environmental organizations and community groups gathered in downtown Pittsburgh at a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency hearing.

In September, the EPA proposed the first federal rules to keep methane and gas out of the atmosphere.

The rules would require the industry to find and repair leaks, capture emissions from wells, limit emissions from compressor stations and reduce le aks from pipelines. Guidelines for states to reduce emissions from volatile organic waste are also included in the proposal.

These proposed federal rules are part of Obama’s Climate Action Plan, which seeks to cut emissions by 40 to 45 percent by 2025.

This is the first attempt by the EPA to regulate methane, a colorless, odorless gas that is benign to humans but potent at trapping heat in the atmosphere. According to the Federal Register, the EPA has estimated the new rule would cost the industry from $320 million to $420 million annually by 2025 but said it would reduce health-care costs and have other benefits totaling about $460 million to $550 million a year.

Representatives from a variety of environmental groups testified Tuesday that the EPA’s proposal doesn’t go far enough.

Board members of the Sierra Club noted that one molecule of methane produces 85 times the heat of a molecule of carbon dioxide over a 20-year period. Steven Hamburg, lead scientist for the Environmental Defense Fund, said his studies show that the industry is producing 700 metric tons of methane a year, equal to the output of CO2 from 150 coal-fired electric plants.

The EPA will be accepting public comment on the proposed methane rule through Nov. 18.

With the Pennsylvania State Budget still hanging in the balance, the hearing is timely. Wolf says he will continue to stand by the promises he made during his campaign. “We need to be like every other [gas producing] state, (by having) a severance tax,” Wolf told WITF’s Smart Talk.

Republicans have so far resisted the governor’s call. Pennsylvania Senate President Pro Tempore, Joe Scarnati, R-Jefferson County, implied in an interview with WHYY last month that a natural gas severance tax proposed by Governor Wolf would cost the state more than 250,000 jobs.

Economists have contested this statement.

Pennsylvania is the only major gas-producing state without a severance tax.

Bob Nugent brings the ‘Amazônia’ to campus Joanna Harlow Reporter ejh1498@lhup.edu On Monday Sept. 28, Bob Nugent opened his show in the Sloan Gallery with a lecture detailing his experiences on the Amazon river and the paintings that they inspired. “Amazônia” will be displayed in the Sloan Gallery until Oct. 23.

Nugent has been visiting the Amazon since the early 1980s, a turbulent time in Brazil, which was under dictatorial rule and was experiencing poverty from inflation. He also spent time with native tribes, some of which live on protected reservations. The story of these tribes parallel the genocide of America’s native peoples.

50 percent of Earth’s plant matter can be found in the Amazon River Basin. The small, stagnant tributaries that flow from it are home to millions living in rustic conditions.

Nugent explained that in the jungle, the green is so pervasive that it becomes like a gray background. The artist’s eye focused on small exceptions: an orange flower or an intricate systems of roots. These single objects helped the artist digest the enormity of the environment around him, leaving him to synthesize the meaning of the

jungle from minutia.

Some of the works include oil paintings over old scientific prints of flowers. These express the idea of perception. Nugent was not taking scientific notes of the flora he encountered, instead he was trying to express the sense of place and the movement of the river. The paint on these works is fluid, the colors silty and the subject is the suggestion of flora. The expressionistic flowers hover over their scientifically rendered counterparts without smothering them. The effect is deep and watery, evoking decay and new growth in the same object.

Before learning of the artist’s intentions for the work, I interpreted these paintings as a comment on colonization. The juxtaposition of the two renderings is thought provoking.

The gritty aesthetic of the frontier towns along the river, with floating houses in a constant state of rebuilding for the wet season and flowers that cover the banks, were the inspiration for the saturated reds and yellows of his square works on thin veneer. Again, the viscosity of the paint is low, and looks very much like the product of a huge, self-sustaining river.

Nugent’s abstractions of colorful, irregular plants, dense trees and fragmented landscapes with hot, moist atmospheres, at first remind the viewer of America’s own sub-tropical climate in the

“deep south”. After spending more time with the pieces, a darker atmosphere becomes apparent.

Like the mystery and depth of Conrad’s jungle, the beauty of these paintings does not obscure the danger.

Nugent’s process is evident. The artist leaves grids, markings, and underpainting visible in the pieces, reflecting the constant process of construction and reconstruction on the Amazon, where man-made structures are easily dismantled by the force of the water.

The works are meant to capture an atmosphere, a feeling and a place. Nugent’s goal was not to objectively record the world around him, but to capture the experience of the traveler. Though the work sheds light on an environment endangered by deforestation, Nugent says that the role of the artist is not to be political. His work reflects this sentiment. The work opens up the natural world to the viewers which hopefully engenders awareness in about the ecological issues facing the Amazon River Basin.

The work is pleasant to view and genuinely engaging. I encourage students and faculty to visit the Sloan Gallery this month and experience the work of Bob Nugent.

‘Rock Band 4’: For those about to rock plastic, we salute you Sam Shirk A&E Editor sxs1090@lhup.edu Break out the plastic musical instruments, grab a group of friends and get ready to rock because on Oct. 6 “Rock Band 4” will be coming to store shelves It has been five years since “Rock Band 3” was released and, since then, there has been a severe lapse in music simulation games. After a lot of fan request and work, Harmonix is finally ready to get back in the music simulation field again.

However, the company really wants to do something different this time. One of the ways is getting back to the heart of “Rock Band.” All throughout development, Harmonix worked tirelessly to figure out where the heart lied. In order to find that, the company played through the three past installments to find it.

In an interview with Polygon, Alex Rigopulos, co-founder and chief officer for Harmonix, said “None of the games in the genre really delivered a lot of innovation, or maybe the right kind of innovation in the experience during that period. Consumers want something new. We view it as a responsibility to deliver that innovation

this time around.”

Rigopulos stated that what lies at the heart came down to three specific aspects. Those aspects were the chase for highest scores and most precise playing, the party experience of playing with your friends on the biggest stage in the world, their living room and the third and last being narrative progression of the game, the story that allows players to be a virtual rock star.

At the beginning, Harmonix was in talks a lot over licensing and working to make past game controllers work on the Xbox One and Playstation 4. Harmonix has recently confirmed that players will be allowed to import their entire 2,000 song library into “Rock Band 4” and they have worked closely with Mad Catz game accessories to make it possible to use the old plastic instruments on the new systems.

Playstation 4 players will not need any extra accessories to use the old instruments but Xbox One users will. Unfortunately, the Xbox One standalone disc version will cost 20 dollars more than the Playstation 4 version making it $80 dollars instead of $60. The reason the Xbox One version is more though is because of the new legacy adapter that comes with it. The legacy adapter is an adapter that Xbox One users will need to plug into their console so they can use their old instruments and it allows four people to play at a time.

So get pumped “Rock Band” fans because the release of this new installment is just around the corner! “Rock Band 4” is available now for pre-order through Harmonix, Amazon, Gamestop, Walmart and more.

Mike Eubanks Guest Writer mae7020@lhup.edu “The Martian” is a New York Times best seller written by first time author, Andy Weir. The science fiction novel is set in a near-future, manned expedition to Mars. The story begins with astronaut Mark Watney alone, trapped and presumed dead when the rest of his crew is forced to abandon the red planet due to a major storm. Watney is injured in an accident causing the rest of the crew to assume he was killed. While the fortunate astronaut survives the initial mishaps, he is now isolated, out of communication with earth and without adequate supplies to survive the four year interval until the next planned mission to Mars.

While Mark Watney’s prospects are bleak, his survival instincts are strong. Rather than give in to his hopeless situation, the stranded astronaut uses his skill and wit to confront the challenges before him. Lacking even the basic necessities like food and water, Watney must improvise and adapt to provide for himself.

The novel is primarily told in first-person, from the perspective of the main character. The author handles the narration skillfully and manages to keep the reader engaged with good pacing and the right balance of action and humor. Mark Watney is likeable and self-deprecating.

The humorous inner dialog of the protagonist balances the grim tension of his untenable circumstances, and keeps the reader invested in his fate.

The author’s scientific credibility also shows. The science is based in real world technology and represents the current possibilities for a manned mission to Mars. The author presents the science in a way that is interesting and believable, but not overbearing. Fans of hard science fiction will enjoy this feature of the novel, but neophytes will not be lost by it.

“The Martian” is an enjoyable and accessible read for fans of science fiction, but general audiences will also enjoy the survival story.

This review of “The Martian” is based on the paperback version available from Broadway books. A film adaptation is currently in production.

Every week is full of great books being released in stores and libraries and made available to buy online, and this week is no different. From Norse gods to psychological thrillers, this week will be a great one for the reader thirsting for their next thrill.

“The Tournament at Gorlan” Written by best seller, John A. Flanagan, this book delves more into the popular character, Halt, from the “Ranger’s Apprentice” series, and how he and his companions re-established the respectability of the Ranger Corps, which is basically a medieval CIA, and brought about the end of an uprising against the newly crowned, King Duncan. This book is the first in the new prequel series, “Ranger’s Apprentice: The Early Years”, and hits shelves and eReaders on Oct. 6.

“The Sword of Summer” Following his series of young adult novels based on Greek and Egyptian mythology, Rick Riordan delves into the world of Norse mythology with this first book in the new series, “Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard.”

Following the story of street-smart, homeless and orphaned Magnus Chase, we learn that the myths of the Viking gods are real. Magnus must search the Nine Worlds for the only weapon that can stop Ragnarok, the end of the world and, of course, it wouldn’t be a challenge if this weapon hadn’t been lost for thousands of years.

“A Madness So Discreet” Written by Mindy McGinnis, this thriller follows Grace Mae, a woman whose madness and voices inside her head land her in a Boston insane asylum. There, she is discovered by a visiting doctor who studies Criminal psychology and feels that Grace’s

sharp eyes and brilliant memory will make her the perfect assistant at crime scenes, leading her to a better life at a safe and ethical asylum in Ohio. However, her new, good life takes a turn for the worse when her and the doctor get involved with a serial killer who stalks young women.

“A Madness So Discreet” hits shelves on Oct. 6.

“Six of Crows” Written by Leigh Bardugo, this book brings us to Ketterdam, a busy city of international trade, where we meet criminal prodigy, Kaz Brekker.

When he’s offered a chance at the dangerous heist that can make him rich beyond his dreams, he knows he can’t do it alone. Gathering five other outcasts, he and the other outcasts must work together to achieve their goals – if they don’t kill each other first.

Lyndsey Hewitt showcasing autumn beauty LOCK HAVEN — Lock Haven University alumna and local journalist, Lyndsey Hewitt, will hold a photography exhibition at Avenue 209 Coffee House, 209 Bellefonte Ave. The show will be on display at the coffee shop during the month of October and will feature a fall theme.

Hewitt has lived in the central Pennsylvania area since she was 12 years old, spending her prior early years in Iowa. She is a 2008 graduate of Central Mountain High School, Mill Hall. She received a bachelor’s degree in journalism with a minor in art from LHU in December 2012.

During her time at LHU, she served as editorin-chief of the Eagle Eye student newspaper from 2011-2012 and, before that, as photo and online editors. Hewitt also was very active in the art department on campus, having participated in several student art exhibitions. She received the Provost’s Purchase Award and the Saundra K. Hybel’s scholarship as well as first place in the International Student Photography Exhibition.

After graduating, she worked at the SunGazette for two years as assistant lifestyle editor and is now a freelance journalist.

The 13 photos in the exhibit display vibrant images of autumn in the central Pennsylvania region. Hewitt used a mixture of both digital and film photography for the exhibition with the bulk of the 13 images being shot on 35 mm film.

“As someone who loves to document nature,

naturally autumn in Pennsylvania has found its way in front of my camera just about every year that I’ve called myself a photographer,” Hewitt said.

The frames in the show add to the quirkiness of her exhibit; they were handpicked at a local thrift store and paired with the image that best suited the frame.

“It makes each image feel like home. It was fun taking apart each frame to clean them, because like so often happens when you buy secondhand items, you find hidden things,” she said adding

that she found an old birthday card for someone named “Uncle Dean” hidden inside.

She also used an old typewriter given to her by her grandmother, an Olympia Deluxe from the ‘60s, to type up her artist statements.

Hewitt is using the funds from the art show to help her in her move to the west coast. She’s moving to Portland, Oregon to continue her career as a journalist, in search of a fresh start “Every little bit counts. Most would say I didn’t spend much putting this show together, but it was still a pretty decent hole in my pocket … especially the photo printing,” Hewitt said. “But it was one I didn’t mind having because I want my art to be seen.”

Anyone who contributes to her “cause” of heading west by purchasing an original print will be greatly appreciated she said.

“I’ve been trying to get Lyndsey on the walls for years, and it comes at such a serendipitous time now that she’s making her escape from Lock Haven. Seems pretty good to me for a last hurrah,” said Jared Conti, manager at Avenue 209.

There won’t be an official opening of any sort for the show, but it will be on display starting Oct. 1.

Study Abroad Stories: New Zealand Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor Act6730@lhup.edu

Emily Day, a junior Health and Physical Education major, studied abroad in New Zealand during the spring semester of 2015. Her trip included crazy adventures like skydiving and bungee jumping. One of her favorite adventures was one where she fell into completely unplanned.

Every year, on the anniversary of her cousin’s death, Emily has tried to make the date a happy memory rather than a day of sadness. This year, she took a road trip with her friend Patrick from Vienna, Austria. Emily was too young to rent the car so Patrick drove. The only problem was that he’d never driven automatic before, being from Europe where they only drive manual. Apparently, it’s really hard to drive automatic when you’ve never done it before because he kept slamming on the brakes, trying to switch gears and didn’t know what to do with his other hand. It was a long eight hour drive for Emily.

Emily described the drive as being in the middle of nowhere with nothing around you. They drove on dirt back roads and never saw a sign or mile marker; all they had was the arrows on the GPS.

Twenty minutes from their destination of the East Cape Lighthouse in Te Araroa, they decided to stop on a beach and sleep in the car. Because they were so far from everything, there were no lights, allowing the stars to shine bright. Emily saw the Southern Lights and even what looked like the Milky Way; a sight most don’t believe we can see with the naked eye from Earth but it’s possible.

In the morning, they made it to the lighthouse, the first place in the world to see the sun. Being in the most eastern part of the globe, the sun rises first there which Emily had a goal to see.

On the way back, one of the many free range cows wandering around had been hit by a truck.

Emily said local Aboriginals appeared out of nowhere and invited them to barbecue the cow with them. During their time with the Aboriginals, Emily and Patrick got to taste the traditional hangi food and were taught the traditional dance, the Tutu Narahu, a branch of the haka dance style.

Not only did they get to see those amazing sights and step out of being tourists long enough to experience the traditional culture, but they also saw amazing untouched beaches full of washed out coves on their way home. This was an experience Emily is not likely to soon forget and the anniversary was definitely an amazingly happy one.

Mars: What’s in the water?

It has been all over every available media outlet for a few days now. NASA has found flowing water on Mars thanks to the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO). This is huge, the media tells the public. Okay, but why is this such a big deal? The water isn’t really water as it would typically be defined. Let’s just take a closer look at why this is such a monumental find for NASA. First, the flowing water that has been identified on Mars is actually a brine made of perchlorate salts. It is liquid but maybe flowing is a little too strong of a word. It is more likely oozing along the sides of the Martian underground.

Even though the brine is a thick salty goo is no reason to discount it. There is hydrogen and oxygen in the liquid, though it is very salty. This is a huge discovery.

This breakthrough opens many conversations for scientists. First, rocket fuel is made from these very elements.

The discovery of water has made the idea of a refueling station on Mars viable. This is still years in the future but it is now something NASA and other space agencies can begin to plan.

Scientists have always expected that where there is water, there is life. So does this mean that there could possibly be life on Mars? Yes. That is exactly what it means even if the life is a small microbial living in the brine. It is still life. The problem with proving this is getting a sample to study without contaminating the brine. Everything humans make carries some of our microbes. These could kill off any life we find, Lee Billings of Scientific American, explains.

According to the lead scientist for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program, Michael Meyer, it appears the deeper we peer into Mars, the greater the chance it can support life. There are still many hurdles to get over before we know exactly what Mars has hidden below its surface. The discovery of a flowing water source is a massive scientific boost to our efforts in understanding the red planet and our hopes of future space exploration.

Seven years ago I moved out of my childhood home and into North Hall to begin my freshman year at Lock Haven University. I did not know back then that the relationships I made and the sport I participated in throughout my four years would shape my future in a major way. Lock Haven played a huge role in the person I am today and prepared me for life after graduation more than I could have imagined when I first stepped onto campus.

I have worked for the LHU Foundation for two years and was recently given the title of Coordinator of Alumni Relations. I have been lucky enough to work in a place with people who share a passion for Lock Haven University and strive to keep its legacy of excellence alive.

Through my job I have been able to meet amazing people and listen to so many stories about Lock Haven; stories that date back as far as the 1800’s.

Our university is rich in history and I am proud to work for an organization that works everyday to preserve that history, while providing a bright future for our current students.

I was blessed with the opportunity to

represent Lock Haven University as a student athlete. I remember countless early morning swimming practices in Zimmerli, weight lifting sessions in Rogers and bonding with my team at Bentley. Being a student athlete is one of the best experiences of my life and I couldn’t be happier to continue to represent Lock Haven University in my life after college and swimming. That’s why I am so proud to be working on the All In campaign that took place on Thursday, October 1st 2015. The All In Day of Giving is a 24 hour giving challenge to fundraise $50,000 in 24 hours.

I would like to give my most sincere “thank you” to those involved for making the “All In” campaign go from an idea to a success! Whether you gave $10 or $500, I believe in my heart that the Lock Haven University Foundation and Lock Haven University Athletics have begun a new tradition that will last for years to come, generating thousands of dollars in scholarship money to continue to bring the best and brightest students and athletes to Lock Haven University each year.

Your college years will fly by, but I would like to encourage you to stay connected to us and stay involved. Lock Haven doesn’t leave you just because you leave campus,and you will always be welcomed back to The Haven.

How to make it through a date with 4am Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor Act6730@lhup.edu We don’t like to do it, but some of us have to. The dreaded all-nighter. No matter how hard we work to stay ahead, that deadline just creeps up faster than we expect. I’d like to think that it only happens once a semester but 4am and I see each other more than I’d like to. So to pull an allnighter and not keel over at your desk, here are some simple guidelines.

Don’t do it often.

You need sleep. By depriving yourself of so much sleep so often, you’re only going to throw your sleep schedule and your body out of whack.

Make sure you don’t get behind on sleep.

Don’t stay up to study.

Have an 8am exam? Don’t stay up till 4am studying. You’re going to do more harm than good.

A lack of sleep is not good for memory, attention or focus the following day. Even if you spent all night reading, you probably didn’t retain any of it. During your deep sleep, your brain stores everything you’ve learned. That’s when you retain your readings. Not four hours before with no sleep.

Eat proteins, not carbs.

Your body needs fuel to get through the night.

We all know that eating after 8pm is bad but that’s if you go to bed before midnight. If you’re going to stay up, you need to grab a snack or even an extra meal. Don’t eat chips and cookies but eat yogurt, granola bars, beef jerky or a protein drink. They will keep your energy levels up.

Grab some caffeine.

While not the healthiest option, energy drinks actually do help you make it through the night even if you crash at the end of your energy trip.

Use these as a last resort though. Avoid caffeine during the day if you know you’re going to pull an all-nighter so your body doesn’t have as much of a tolerance built up.

Do periodic workouts.

Exercise can help boost your brain’s ability to learn and retain information. It gets your blood flowing and kick starts your creativity. Don’t build up a sweat but do a few push-ups or jumpingjacks, anything to get your blood flowing. Physical activity signals the brain that it should be alert and focused.

When you’re done, regroup.

Now that you’ve met your deadline, you can relax but try to get your sleep schedule back on track. You can take a short nap, approximately 30 minutes, but don’t go to bed much earlier than you normally do. Try to go to bed around the same time.

We don’t like to go on dates with 4am but sometimes we have to. If you do it right, you’ll make it through without turning into a total zombie. Good luck on your night!

Where in the World: Aberdeenshire, Scotland Raymond Stellhorn Columnist Rjs2091@lhup.edu The intent of this column is to introduce you to regions and cities of the world that are not as mainstream as what your typical travel column would highlight.

This week we visit Aberdeenshire located in northeast Scotland which makes up one of thirty-two Scottish council areas.

Beautiful rolling countryside, castles, seaside and city-life can all be found nestled in this exquisite region adored by many including the British Royal Family.

Balmoral Castle located in the western part of this Scottish Council area is one of the Queen’s residences in the United Kingdom. This large estate house is where members of the Royal Family may go on holiday to get away from bustling London. The grounds can be visited by the public and the estate house itself with limited viewing.

To the southeast, one will find the historic fishing village of Stonehaven.

Nearby is the famous Dunnottar Castle, one of the most picturesque castle sites in all of the British Isles. The medieval

estate located in a glen sitting atop a highcliff peninsula surrounded by the North Sea. This location is not just a must-see in Aberdeenshire but for all of Scotland.

Located along the middle of Aberdeenshire’s eastern coast is the third largest populated city in Scotland, the city of Aberdeen. It is commonly known as the Granite City or Grey City due to all of the buildings in the city center being constructed with granite; they give a very uniquely uniform grey look to the city. Take a stroll down Union Street where one can find many shopping and dining options. Also, visit Aberdeen Harbour, The Maritime Museum and the boardwalk along Aberdeen Beach. The Granite City offers many recreational activities including numerous world class golf links as well as a Leisure Park similar to what one would find on a pier at American beach resort.

Aberdeen City and Shire may not be as famous as the cities of Edinburgh and Glasgow or the Scottish Highlands but there is so much to see and do in the historic medieval lands of Northeast Scotland.

Federal funding failure Aaron Fleegle Opinion Editor ajf2892@lhup.edu By now, everyone has surely heard about the budget impasse. An unspecified number of college students are still waiting for their PA State Grant, myself included. It has been a quarter of the year thus far and the feud between Governor Tom Wolf and the Republican legislature is no closer to ending than it was three months ago.

Eschewing a political discussion in favor of humanity-based one, why are the residents of Pennsylvania being forced to suffer? College students not getting their refunds is one of the more mild and less important side effects of this debate.

Schools across the state are being forced to take out loans to continue teacher payrolls and provide their necessary services.

Most, if not all businesses that provide services to the elderly and disabled, are being denied access

to the money they normally receive. As a result, the people most in need of assistance are refused.

The most recent update involves a potential stop-gap bill that would have provided a third of the available funds to the aforementioned entities who need it. It would have essentially allowed for four months of spending just to assist crucial services.

Wolf’s immediate response was to declare that he would veto the budget. Clever scare tactic, right?

Unfortunately, he was serious and his reasoning essentially amounted to him not getting his own way. Acting like a spoiled child, he claimed that the legislature was “poking him in the eye” and not really doing much to achieve a final budget plan.

While the latter is certainly a valid point, his reasoning is largely self-motivated. Apparently, Wolf has this absurd notion that representing the people means that the people automatically side with him.

Democracy or dictatorship? Regardless, he finds himself against 82% of the state’s business

owners who are dissatisfied with the job he’s doing.

Despite conflicting ideas of the state budget, there is absolutely no reason for it to be three months late, especially with little to no updates for the average Pennsylvania citizen.

At the very least, Wolf could have demonstrated true leadership by at least approving a temporary stop-gap budget to ensure that those who rely on the government for assistance are actually capable of receiving said assistance.

It wouldn’t be fair to blame this entirely on Wolf as the legislature is still responsible for the other side of the argument, but for being the one who holds arguably the most power, Wolf’s decisions come across as childish and selfish.

Perhaps next year, discussing the budget can happen sooner rather than later and state businesses won’t find themselves devoid of necessary money. This is strictly a humanitarian issue and for once, it would be nice to see politicians actually work for the people they govern. After all, is that not the dictionary definition of the word?

Oh, the hours you’ll work and the internships you’ll have Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu Imagine you are a first semester senior and your parents are telling you to start looking for jobs, your professors are giving out work left and right and you are caught right in the middle. To be honest, this person is me.

I hear from other seniors the jobs they want require years of experience they do not have.

Now that I have been job searching, I have found the same results. It is funny, you go to college in order to get better jobs and better pay but then, once you graduate, you do not have the experience to get the positions you went to college for.

Some companies claim to require years of experience to scare applicants away from applying, while others actually do require the three to six years’ experience in a certain field. So the question is: how do we acquire the experience needed to attain the job we want?

In my opinion, the answer can be many things: internships, apprenticeships or temporary work. Internships are an opportunity to get inside of a company and learn how the

company runs in a certain department as well as learning different things in that department.

Apprenticeships are somewhat like internships except you work more closely with a single person or a couple people to learn a single trade. Lastly, there is temporary work.

Temp work is when you work for a company as a temporary employee, usually during a company’s busy times to do the work that the other employees are doing.

There are probably more than these three opportunities but I hear about these the most as a business major. As for which one is the best, it is truly up to the person doing the work and it depends on your field.

Among many universities, an internship is usually required or highly recommended for most majors. Take an internship or apprenticeship and you will get a few months of experience to put on your resume. If you can not find a job right after college, try applying for temporary work.

No matter which option you choose, you will be gaining experience, networking, opening new doors and learning new skills to take with you down the road.

Yogi Berra: a true baseball icon Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu One of the greatest baseball players of all-time passed away last week. Yogi Berra wasn’t just a player, a friend or an all-star; he was, and always will be, a baseball legend. He was 90 years old.

Berra spent most of his career as the catcher of the New York Yankees. He made his major-league debut in 1946. Despite his small stature, he was a power hitter and a great defensive catcher.

Berra retired after the 1963 season after playing 18 seasons with the boys from the Bronx.

Berra then decided to coach for the Subway Series rival, the New York Mets. After coaching and also playing with the Mets for nearly a decade, Berra returned to Yankee Stadium to coach the Yanks.

After eight seasons managing the Yankees, Berra coached the Houston Astros of the National League. Berra is one of very few managers to lead an American League and National League team to the World Series.

As a player, coach or manager, Berra made 21 World Series appearances and won 13 of them.

In 1972, the Yankees retired his uniform number 8 and honored him with a plaque in Monument Park in 1988, which can still be found today at the New Yankee Stadium.

Yogi Berra was an 18-time All-Star, a 13-time world champion and a 3-time American League Most Valuable Player. Berra is also a dedicated member of the Baseball Hall of Fame class of 1972.

One thing that everyone in Major League Baseball liked about Yogi was his “Yogi-isms.” One of his most famous “Yogi-isms” was “It ain’t over

till it’s over.” Berra said this after an incredible comeback from his New York Mets team in 1973.

In the last month of the season, the Mets trailed the Chicago Cubs by 9.5 games in the National League East division. The Mets rallied to clinch the division title in their second-to-last game of the regular season which sent the Mets to the playoffs, making it one of the greatest comebacks in Major League Baseball History.

Yogi Berra will always be in the minds of Yankees players and fans everywhere. When I think about baseball legends, I think of Babe Ruth, Derek Jeter, Willie Mays, Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio--I also think of Yogi Berra.

He will truly be missed, but never forgotten in the baseball world. On the day of his death, I knew right away what I had to do; I wore my Yogi Berra socks. Rest in peace, Yogi.

Pressing problems with politics

Connor Poorman Staff Writer cmp7673@lhup.edu Why can’t we seem to fix things in America these days? I feel like every time we’ve elected someone to presidency, no matter who they were, things have gotten worse. I’m an Obama supporter, but we still have problems that seem to never disappear.

Poverty and homelessness seem to be an issue and nothing appears to really be solving it. Poverty, however, is not the only issue that America faces today: a number of foreign and domestic policies that will be determined in this coming election, faced by the next President and will probably still not be solved.

I’ll reiterate with a more focused question: why can’t we seem to fix things in American politics these days?

American politics have always been complicated. Perhaps today’s issues seem to be more hard pressed than they used to be.

Introductions to media and internet outlets have informed Americans more so than ever before. Could it be that in the past, because of how slow information was passed to people, that our ignorance might have been more uniting? Or is it that our Democracy is starting to rip at the seams and come undone?

In any case, I believe our trust in our government’s ability to govern and our political system will be far more tested than ever before, especially in this coming election.

I cannot stress, more than ever before, the importance of voting and how it is essential to how our nation will be shaped for our future.

Voting is essential, and because of this election, or so I’ve heard, many people may choose not to vote. Can we really blame those who don’t though?

The system has been proven to fail, mainly because our votes go to someone who votes for us. So why as a college student should I vote when my vote doesn’t feel like it matters at all?

I’m not an expert on the matter or an expert on the behind the scene facts about our political system, and that’s why we have Political Science majors (which I am not) and professors who teach those courses.

Personally though, no matter how much I feel as though the voting system has failed me, I will still vote. Because of the questions I have stated above, because of the issues we have in America and because I would rather say I tried to do something instead of stand back and watch. Changes, however, will need to be made to our voting and political system.

I am hoping eventually our elected officials will see that college students such as ourselves are concerned with how America is still using old policies.

By old policies I can’t possibly mean senate members with no term limitation or an Electoral College of people we don’t even know, or could I? Just remember to pay attention to this coming election and hope that American politics don’t fail, again. Hopefully whoever is elected will recognize that things need to be changed and that our elected officials will stop living in a dream world.

October 1, 2015 Sports Walton and Swales impress, but Bald Eagles fall, 37-34 14

Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu On a day when redshirt junior quarterback, Caleb Walton, and senior running back, Beau Swales set career highs, the team was unable to pull out a win against East Stroudsburg in a 37-34 defeat at Hubert Jack Stadium.

Walton passed for four touchdowns and also added a rushing touchdown.

The four touchdown passes tied a career-high. The four scores also pushed his career total to 32, which is good enough for third most in school history (Three away from second all-time). Eleven of his 32 passing touchdowns have come against ESU. Additionally, he threw for 280 yards to move his career total to 4,169 which puts him fourth on the all-time passing list.

As for Swales, he rushed for 193 yards on 27 carries. That total was eleventh most rushing yards in a single game by a Bald Eagle.

Lock Haven struck first when Walton found Jeremy Cornelius in the back of the end zone for a 22-yard touchdown pass.

After an impressive goal-line stand, the offense went back to work, but a holding penalty in the end zone resulted in a safety and two points for ESU, their first of the day. The momentum was building for ESU after that play as they scored their first touchdown of the day just 58 seconds later.

Lock Haven showed some resiliency to battle back after being down 23-7 with 7:50 left in the second quarter. However, the final 3:51 of that quarter saw LHU score three touchdowns to send them into the locker room with a 2823 lead. After the frantic finish to the half, the third quarter was much more tame as neither team could put points on the scoreboard.

After ESU blocked a Lock Haven field goal attempt, they drove down to

recapture the lead 37-34 with 1:32 left.

Walton and his offense took the field with two timeouts trying to mount a game-tying drive. He led the team into field goal range, but a 44-yard field goal attempt, that had plenty of leg behind it, was missed wide left.

Walton went 20-38 on the day and a majority of his targets went to the trio of Dan Krupko, Shawn Seif and David Cook.

Krupko was targeted 13 times and only hauled in five of those targets for 67 yards. Seif, meanwhile, was much more efficient. Walton looked his way nine times and Seif caught seven passes for 72 yards and a touchdown. David Cook finished his day with five receptions on seven targets for 59 yards and a touchdown.

Walton enjoyed most of his success when he worked in the middle of the field. He was 7-8 over the middle, 7-13 when passing to his left and an underwhelming 5-16 when passing to his right.

When looking at the distance that his passes traveled in the air, Walton completed 64 percent (14-22) of his passes that traveled less than 10 yards. His completion percentage dropped to 38 percent (6-16) when throwing the ball more than 10 yards.

Defensively, the Warriors of East Stroudsburg targeted junior defensive back, Daniel Strawbridge, an astounding 21 times. Eleven of those 21 passes (52 percent) found their intended man.

Spencer Snyder and Carlos Balkcom had nice days in coverage for LHU. Snyder was targeted six times and allowed two receptions. ESU was 1-4 when targeting Balkcom and he came down Lock Haven’s lone interception.

Dave Taynor and his team will be looking for their first win of the season next Saturday when they take on the Golden Rams of West Chester (2-2). The game is scheduled to start at noon at Hubert Jack Stadium.

Field hockey defeats Bucknell, moves to 9-2 Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu

Junior Paige Stuppy had five saves for Lock Haven as she improved to a perfect 7-0 on the season.

Lock Haven had four shots on goal with the other two shots coming from Smith senior, Rachel Valentine.

Valentine has nine goals and one assist on the season, including 23 shots on goal.

Also in the statbook, Lydia George has two goals and two assists on the season, Colleen McCabe has scored two goals and has one assist, Stephanie Whiteman has a goal and three assists, and Noelle Kephart and Danalee Degannes each have one goal a piece.

This week, Smith was named Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Week for the second time this season. She scored the only goal in the 48th minute of Lock Haven’s 1-0 over LaSalle on Friday.

The field hockey team will look to move to 9-0 in nonconference action as they continue their five game homestand on Friday against Rider at 7p.m. at Charlotte Smith Field.

The Lock Haven University Field Hockey team defeated Bucknell 2-1 Tuesday night at Charlotte Smith Field, improving to 9-2 on the season.

After taking a mid-week trip to Philadelphia last week and splitting games with St. Joe’s and LaSalle, Lock Haven won their fourth home game in five tries this season at home by beating Bucknell.

Tamia Roach put Lock Haven up 1-0 early only 1:27 in with an assist from fellow freshman, Alyscia Smith. Smith now has three goals and four assists in 11 games this season as a freshman.

Roach is right behind Smith with three goals and three assists.

It was over 30 minutes before the next goal was scored when Kiersten Sydnor tied the game up for Bucknell at 35:43. Sydnor tapped in a rebound.

Only 1:07 went by before Lock Haven retook the lead on junior Kiersten Cepeda’s third goal of the season as Lock Haven went up 2-1. That’s how it would stay for the remainder of the game.
