STAR WARS EPISODE VII

Apparently after that sequence the force falls asleep, because on November 6th , 2014, Star Wars has announced their title to episode VII, “The Force Awakens”.

A tweet from @StarWars_VII said, “Star Wars: The Force Awakens has completed principal photography.” This news is exciting for most Star Wars fans because now the title can make us wonder on what this movie could be about.

Why was the force ever asleep to begin with? I think after Luke Skywalker overthrew the galactic emThe force was put into remission, not needed. What I think this simple title can tell us is that there is going to be

somebody wanting to take over the galaxy, somebody who is not a good person. We know Luke (Mark Hamill), Han Solo (Harrison Ford), will they play into the story? We can expect to see plenty of new faces as well. Inspired by a traditional Iñupiaq story called “Kunuuksaayuka”, this puzzle platform game is about a young girl and fox traveling to the top of the world to save her people from an endless blizzard. tell a story of indigenous people from ever indigenous video game company in the U.S., Upper One Games.

The stunning artwork, characters and environment featured in the game are inspired and based on traditional Alaska Native art such as paintings, drawings, sculptures, clothing, masks, and scrimshaws. Revisit a classic game this Thanksgiving break Mary Jones Staff Writer mej102@lhup.edu First released in 2007 by NaughtyDog for the PlayStation 3, “Uncharted” is an action-adventure, third-person shooter, platformer game about Nathan Drake, tor Sullivan, plucky reporter Elana Fisher and a whole cast of allies and enemies.

With the fourth game, “A Thief’s End” coming out in 2015 for the PlayStation 4, I why you should, too.

Humor Nate is a master at one-liners, and it is common to hear him complain about The cut scenes are also full of the witty characters making cracks and comments at each other and the enemies - even the stupidity of the enemies adds to the humor.

Graphics NaughtyDog really outdid themselves with the “Uncharted” games. Also, while all of the other PlayStation 3 and X-Box 360 games at the time had a dark, gritty look to them, NaughtyDog broke away from this. Soup’s to stop the chill of winter Spicy Tortilla

Winter is just around the corner, and what’s better than a bowl of hot soup to keep you warm?

Here are a few quick recipes that you can throw together in the morning before heading off to classes, that will be ready to eat when you get home. Foodnetwork.com has 5 easy recipes.

Basic Chicken soup

Puree 2 seeded, soaked ancho chiles, 1 onion, 2 tomatoes and 2 garlic cloves; fry in oil. Add 6 cups chicken broth, 4 torn corn tortillas, some shredded cooked chicken and 1/2 cup cilantro; simmer until thick. Add salt; garnish with crisp tortilla strips, Mexican cheese, avocado, cilantro and lime juice.

Potato Chowder

Chop 1 onion, 1 celery stalk, 2 carrots and 1 tablespoon thyme; sauté in butter until tender.

Season with salt and pepper. Add 6 cups chicken broth; simmer 20 minutes. Add 2 cups shredded cooked chicken, 1/3 cup mixed chopped dill and parsley and some lemon juice.

Saute 4 ounces chopped bacon; add 2 tablespoons butter, 2 sliced leeks and 2 teaspoons each sage and thyme. Add 4 cups chicken broth, 1 1/2 cups cream, a bay leaf and 3 chopped potatoes.

Simmer until tender; top with chives.

including what you burn while exercising. There are even challenges, both food and activity, that allow you to push and motivate yourself.

One of the best things about this app is that, while it has the database of food, including restaurants, brand names, and grocery stores, as well as activities, it also has to option to create food and exercise, just in case it doesn’t have what you’re looking for. You can even create recipes. The app will also remember which foods and exercises you select, foods and exercises.

All of this comes in the free download of Lose It, making it free, effective, watching calories, losing weight, and/or leading a more healthy lifestyle. Updating it to Premium adds features such as Meal and Exercise planning, custom goals like body fat, hydration, sleep, steps per day, and a multitude of others.

However, for $40 per year, the free version of Lose It is the best way to go while on a budget.

Split Pea

Simmer 1/2 pound split peas with 1 each chopped celery stalk, onion and carrot, a ham hock and a bundle of fresh herbs in 5 cups water until tender. Remove ham and bone; pull off the meat.

Puree the soup; stir in ham.

Black Bean

Soak 1/2 pound dried black beans overnight; drain. Sauté 1 each chopped celery stalk, onion and carrot and 2 smashed garlic cloves in oil. Add beans, thyme, a bay leaf, a ham hock and 5 cups water; simmer 40 minutes. Remove ham and bone; pull off the meat. Puree the soup; stir in the ham.

How many of us wish we knew what a person was thinking at a certain moment? I would wager most if not all of us have wanted this super power at one time or another. Thanks to a group of scientists at the University of California, Berkeley, we now can. That’s right, according to an article intrepid group of researchers have devised a way to know what a person is thinking.

How could this possibly work? It turns out it isn’t as complicated as you may think. When we speak to one another, our voices make sound waves and these waves trigger a multitude of

cells to activate and so on. That makes sense since we are hearing these words but what if we are reading them silently, to ourselves? It turns out triggered then as well.

The researchers were able to place small electrodes on the surface of the brain and then record the brains reactions to both spoken words and words thought. They were even able to decipher what type of music a person was listening to depending on the neuron reactions in the brain. The only a semblance of an idea. If a person is thinking of a food they could tell but the researchers couldn’t say the person wanted cheese pizza with pepperoni and bacon.

Although this isn’t an extremely accurate method of interpreting what we are thinking it is a huge step forward. This has many practical apmind reading mutants like pop culture would have us believe but it could lead to a better understanding of what people want and need that are unable to communicate with us. There are many people that have been either paralyzed or born unable to profoundly.

It may sound farfetched but this study into reading and interpreting our inner thoughts could lead to a great breakthrough for those who have no other way of telling us what they want to say.

Students discuss staying warm this winter Jennie Slota Staff Writer jslota@lhup.edu It’s that time of the year again Lock Haven University students, where the temperatures are dropping drastically. Winter is approaching fast and not only will you need to prepare for cold temperatures, but also wind chills, snow, ice and even freezing rain.

Chantelle Heggenstaller, a junior communications major, said she lived in the area all her life and each year the winters appear to be worse than the last.

“It’s so cold here in the winter. When it snows, it’s a mess and the roads get very bad. Last year it snowed so bad they you could not even clear the sidewalks properly. Students who walk to class, had to walk in a mess of snow and ice or use the roads a alternative,” said Heggenstaller.

So how will students handle traveling or walking back and forth to their classes this winter season?

The trolley system is available for students during winter months as well. If you were not already taking advantage of the trolley, during the cold months would be the perfect time. If you’re not interested in some female reproductive issues, turn away now. This is a little lesson in the horrors of “the pill.”

If you’ve ever considered going on the pill (oral contraception) then you’ve heard the standard lecture about what can happen when you start taking it. Some of it is pretty groovy, like the possibility of shorter, lighter periods and some of it sucks, like the possibility of gaining a bunch of weight. You’ve also heard that you shouldn’t smoke because of the increased risk for a heart attack and you’ve heard that the pill is roughly 99% effective at preventing pregnancy when taken properly (score for those of us who think babies are cute, but only when they belong to someone else).

What you probably haven’t been told is that going off of the pill can be a complete and utter nightmare.

At the beginning of October, I called my phar-

What happened was a communication catastrophe that led to me not getting my pills for nearly two weeks, too far into my cycle for me to just start my new pack. So I did what any doctor would have instructed me to do: I didn’t start my pack and instead patiently awaited my next period. Inconvenient, but not a problem, I thought.

Now good readers, I’m not ashamed to admit that my sex life lately does not have me fearing that a missed period might mean pregnancy. So while I wasn’t worried about some creepy little thing forming in the primordial ooze of my uterus, I was a little concerned about my lack of period (and knowing when I could and should start taking my pill again, in hopes of reviving my sad and strangled sex life).

I took to Google in search of answers and what I found amazed me.

It turns out that while some women can go off of the pill and be pregnable again mere days; that’s why taking your pill properly is so crucial to preventing pregnancy), others take months to ovulate again, some get stuck in a nonovulating cycle due to hormonal changes taking the pill has made and still others are rendered infertile for life (I’m not sure how rare or common infertility caused by the pill is, but if you ever want to have kids, it’s probably worth looking into).

On top of all that fertility/menstruation nonsense, going off of the pill can produce other

radical changes. If you’re someone like me, going off of the pill means that your skin decides to rebel, for one. I broke out worse than I ever did and monstrous facial craters. As if having my face deformed weren’t bad enough, going off the pill also affected how well I slept (not well, in case you were wondering). My appetite and my body’s ability to handle food suffered. Nearly everything I ate made me nauseous for an entire month (which really would have freaked me out if I was gettin’ some booty on the regular). My stress levels shot through the roof (welcome back panic attacks, my old friend). And, as I it made my body store water like a camel in an uncomfortable, bloated tire around my midsection.

Needless to say, I started taking my pill again and am happy to report that most of my problems subsided within a week.

They don’t tell you the struggle it can be to quit taking an oral contraceptive after years and years. Had I known when I was 16-years-old what I know now, I would’ve rejected taking the pill as a means to regulate my periods, because now my body is enslaved to those demon hormone pills.

Hormone-free might be the way to go for some women, but for me, organically functioning ovaries only amount to trouble these days.

The team also hosts a tournament here at Lock Haven. The club also keeps in contact with alumni and ask them to come back to play on the alumni team. The club considers themselves competitive, but not too aggressive.

of 1924 and it was 1965 when the Voting Rights Act was passed before individual states could no longer deny Native peoples the right to vote and partici pate in politics.

As some people may know it is Native American Heritage month. I have found that there are many people that don’t know this or even that they had never even heard of it. It has a long history that started as a day and turned into a month.

Indian Day was declared as the second Saturday changed from state to state until 1990 when George H.W. Bush approved a resolution that would desig nate the month of November as Native American Heritage month. many attempts since then by a number of different states to have Columbus Day renamed and recog across the country.

Although it is a sad reality that such a thing took 75 years to enact, it is a pattern one can see throughout American history. Natives weren’t

to mind, Native American. Do you automatically go warrior in full headdress? Maybe instead you see the image of a weeping brave beside a polluted river that has been so popular throughout the decades.

I would say all of these things are stereotypes but—here’s the kicker—also accurate and perfectly okay to associate with the Native Americans and other tribal people. it very simply. Natives wore headdresses, they are extremely tied to the earth and its destruction is painful on a soulful level and yes, many of us use drums or participate in drumming circles. It is a strong connection with the planet and represents the heartbeat of all people as a single interconnect

We are also so much more. We are a culture that is struggling to withstand the spreading dis ease of modern consumerism and hoping to survive a deep yearning to tell the stories of a people that are quickly being forgotten.

Men’s Basketball looking to build on last season

A different vibe was felt at Thomas Fieldhouse last season during Lock Haven University men’s basketball games.

Things were different, and what was the most different was the amount of wins.

Lock Haven went 17-10 last season, including 10-6 in the PSAC East, and Haven’s 17 wins were the most wins it had since 1990 when that Lock Haven Mike Nestor will be beginning his fourth year as head coach of the Bald Eagles. Nestor is fresh off being named PSAC East Coach of the Year last season.

The Bald Eagles return four starters this year, most notably is senior, Wali Hepburn.
