LHU hosts spring club fair Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm3662@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University Student Activities Council held their spring semester club fair from 3-6p.m. on Wednesday in the Student Recreation Center.

The club fair is held at the beginning of each fall and spring semester, featuring over 100 clubs available at Lock Haven University and t-shirt giveaways.

“I think that it is a good opportunity for people to come out and shop for different organizations, said Trent Van Dyke, a junior health science major. Van Dyke is a member of the Climbing and Love Your Melon clubs, as well as an officer in the Outing club.

Clubs vary from different majors, all from health science to communication, and also include different athletic, outdoors, and musical clubs, too.

The Lock Haven University Choir was one of the clubs represented at the fair.

“We usually have two concerts each semester, both on campus. “We really need more guys, we only have two guys in the choir,” said Wahl. “We also need more people in general. We are a very small club and we just need more people to sign up.”

This semester’s music will mostly cover classical and jazz.

An interesting club that is also available to students is the Outing club. The members partake in organized outdoor activities.

Miranda Nalisnick, a junior health science major, said, “Well, I like doing things outdoors,” when asked about her willingness to join the outing club.

“We go backpacking, hiking, camping, white water rafting, and all kinds of things outside,” said Nalisnick.

For more information on clubs offered at Lock Haven University, students are encouraged to visit the Student Activities office located in Parsons Union Building.

It’s time to glow and hit the books!

Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu As a welcome back to new and returning students, RHA, Student Activities and Center for Excellence and Inclusion sponsored a Glow Party on Jan. 23 in the REC center.

“This was a great way to start my semester here at LHU. Being able to get to know and meet new friends, and a free t-shirt!

What college student doesn’t like free stuff?”

Mentioned Shamaar Vancol a freshman majoring in Political Science. The first 300 students were given a t-shirt which read ‘Keep Calm and Glow On’.

The rec center was transformed into a black light party, full of games, prizes and food. The prizes that students had a chance to win were a TV, an iPad, some gift cards to Weis and more!

Sam Shirk, a Senior studying Communication, attended the glow party and said, “The LHU Glow Party was one of the most interesting experiences I’ve had in my college

career. It was pretty neat seeing the amount of work RHA can put into an event, between the lights, music and mini golf – I had a blast!”

Some activities there included mini golf, water pong, Mario Kart and a photo booth. There were black lights all over the golf course making the golf balls and the courses glow. Water pong was a crowd favorite with a line of students waiting to play almost the whole night.

Along with the activities there was a DJ playing songs like Cotton Eye Joe, Cha Cha Slide, Uptown Funk, Apple Bottom Jeans and more.

There was also a station set up for students to get glow paint painted on themselves, so they could glow as well. Students were also able to make glasses out of glow sticks, or just regular glow necklaces.

David Bowie: Extraordinary musician returns to the stars Sam Shirk A&E Editor sxs1090@lhup.edu Legendary musician David Bowie passed away on Jan. 10 after a long battle with cancer. Bowie was 69 when he passed away.

Bowie was considered an innovator by notable critics and musicians. He was well known for his quirky, unique personality as well as the characters he brought to life. Bowie fans knew him by many names, Ziggy Stardust, The Goblin King, Aladdin Sane and many more. There is no doubting the sheer creative genius behind each character or persona.

Bowie was one of the most inspiring musicians of our time and his inspiration paved the way for many musicians and bands we know and love today. Nirvana, Lady Gaga, Lorde, Patrick Stump from Fall Out Boy, Jay-Z, Billy Idol and many more. All of these musicians have been touched by David Bowie on some level, some more than others.

When commenting in “Classic Rock” magazine about Bowie, Joe Elliot from Def Leppard said “Bowie’s death is genuinely a tragedy for me, because his music has been in my life for more than forty years. That’s a long time.

I’ve recorded more than twenty of his songs over the years.”

Bowie was a true musician and during his time on Earth he tried many different forms of Rock N’ Roll, which led to the varied Bowie sound many of us know and love. In true musician form, Bowie left us with an amazing gift before he died, an album that is clearly one of his best, “Blackstar.”

Bowie’s “Blackstar” is a 7-track jazz phenomenon that will go down in my book as one of his greatest albums of all time. From the opening track of the same name as the album it’s clear Bowie has set us up for a wonderful treat that perfectly embodies Bowie’s heart, soul and legacy.

The song “Blackstar” is a long listen that captivates the listener from the very first sound. Strong electronic beats accompany Bowie’s hauntingly beautiful vocals. The track is almost 10 minutes of pure perfection, closer to 2 minutes in we’re treated to the beautiful sounds of Bowie’s saxophone, setting us up for what’s yet to come musically.

The whole album sounds like something out of the old but wonderful jazz years mixed with the futuristic edge we all know and love from rock’s most well-know time traveler. It seems to me that Bowie went back to his old “Space Oddity” roots for this album.

Following the album’s title track is a more upbeat tune “’Tis A Pity She Was A Whore.” Featuring rich musical sounds alongside Bowie’s low vocals, this track is a nice break to prep the listener for the tragic “Lazarus.” Witty lyrics and humor are laced throughout this number and it makes the listener feel like he or she is having a fun drunken chat with Bowie about a past event.

“Lazarus” was the album’s single, and it can only be described as Bowie’s final goodbye message. He knew his tragic end was drawing closer by the minute and to many this seems to be the way he wanted to tell the fans.

Featuring lyrics like “I’ve got scars that can’t be seen/I’ve got drama, can’t be stolen” and “This way or no way/You know I’ll be free,” it’s hard not to almost cry when listening. Especially after watching the single’s accompanying music video which features Bowie lying in a bed with wraps on his eyes, before rising and moving almost as if he’s in a

trance or possessed. Later his movements are jerky as he stands, continuing to look like some supernatural being is forcing him to move.

Like anything, all good things must come to an end, and Bowie’s final track does not disappoint. Providing us with a beautiful and strong ending, “I Can’t Give Everything Away” is the perfect jazzy tune to end on and Bowie’s powerful vocals leaves us with a slightly sad but satisfied feeling.

With an array of amazing talent and breathtaking sounds accompanying it, “Blackstar” is a gem the ear will want to hear over and over. A strong finale from Ziggy Stardust himself can only lead to one word: extraordinary.

This week in Lock Haven Mary Jones A&E Editor mej102@lhup.edu Every week, a lot of different events organized for the benefit of the students happen on campus and around town. They are run by different campus groups, such as Haven Activities Council (HAC), the Resident Hall Association (RHA) or one of the many different clubs on campus!

Here’s what’s happening this week on campus!

Friday, Jan. 29 6pm - 9pm: Art Gallery! The Fine Arts Society and other works from the University art collections and local artists will be on display at the Train Station Gallery in Lock Haven from Jan. 29 to Feb. 20.

The Station Gallery is located at 2 E. Bald Eagle Street.

7pm: HAC Comedy Night! Come out for some laughs and see Langston Kerman and Jenny Zigrino on stage at the Price Auditorium!

Langston Kerman is a stand up comedian and actor that has appeared on HBO and the Oxygen Network and has recently been selected as a new face in the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal, QC, Canada.

Jenny Zigrino is also a stand up comedian and actress, she has appeared on “Conan O’Brien” and was a finalist in Comedy Central’s “Up Next” and TBS’s “Funniest Wins.”

She has also appeared in many other comedies and performs at numerous Comedy Festivals.

Kathleen Ellison Editor-in-Chief kae742@lhup.edu The recent weather aside, this time of year Lock Haven is usually a wintry mess of sky dandruff we call snow. Everywhere else seems to be getting hammered with the stuff, so you should all be prepared for when we inevitably get hit with a blizzard.

For you freshmen (and other dear readers), here are five movies you should watch on a snow day.

“Frozen” (2013) I’m absolutely sick of this movie, but I feel like nothing is more appropriate to watch, especially with this crazy weather we’ve been having.

Besides, with a snow day you can stay home, embrace your inner child and sing along with Idina Menzel because that song is as catchy as the plague.

“Fargo” (1996) After watching a Disney movie, you can make your movie day a little more sophisticated with a critically acclaimed Coen brothers movie. This dark comedy has suspense, humor, murder and of course: snow (it does take place in North Dakota). This artistically beautiful film is a mustsee for any movie aficionado, but even a regular moviegoer can appreciate it.

“Mad Max: Fury Road” (2015) Of course, now the weak moviegoers will start to be waning after that good comedy, so we got to get the blood pumping with this fast paced action flick. At this point, you’re probably sick of the snow, so take a trip to the down under into a post-apocalyptic desert wasteland.

You’ll be ready to ride into Valhalla shiny and chrome before you know it!

“Spaceballs” (1987) Okay, “Fargo” is kind of grim (it is a dark comedy), so following up with a Mel Brooks classic will definitely lighten up the atmosphere. Nothing is more appropriate right now than this “Star Wars” spoof given the new movie, “The Force Awakens.”

Probably one of his most quotable and iconic films, it’s definitely perfect to relax with after watching someone get put through a woodchipper.

“The Princess Bride” (1987) What better way to finish off a movie marathon than with the masterpiece, “The Princess Bride”?

This movie has everything for everyone: action, romance, comedy, sword fights, pirates, miracles and R.O.U.S.’s. It’s sweet storybook tone will be perfect for the quiet evening in.

“Star Wars”: The force might not be strong in this one Mike Eubanks Staff Writer mae7020@lhup.edu “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” returns the storied space opera franchise to its roots.

The newest entry sees the return of characters and cast members from the original film trilogy while introducing some new protagonists for the obviously planned continuation of the new storyline. While the film tweaks the nostalgic impulses of long time fans of the series, it fails in some respects to recapture the charm that has driven the franchise’s popularity.

This review attempts to avoid any major spoilers, so it won’t include a detailed synopsis of the movie’s plot.

The film blatantly recycles virtually all of its major plot components from earlier episodes. If you’ve seen it in a “Star Wars” movie in the past, you will likely see it in this one. Some continuity

is necessary and desirable, but “The Force Awakens” gives the impression of a setting that has aged a few decades but not moved at all. Many old characters and cast members return only to reprise roles that seem to have diminished importance.

The script is rife with glaring plot holes, broken continuity, inconsistent characterizations and “deus ex machina” plot devices. The First Order, the film’s reconstituted and generically named version of the Empire, is probably among the most ineptly managed evil galactic empires in space opera history. The story often feels formulaic and predictable.

In spite of the film’s flaws, it is still worth seeing for fans of the franchise. While the writing is not the strongest, “The Force Awakens” is still entertaining.

The action itself might be cliché and predictable, but the ties to the past also restore a sense of continuity to the series, albeit imperfectly. “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will not completely satisfy many of its fans, but it won’t completely disappoint either.

In the absence of a better alternative, this film gets a recommendation.

Student of the Week: You’re talking to an astronaut Amanda Thomas act6730@lhup.edu Lifestyle Editor Name: Kelly Gerrity Year: Freshmen Major: Dual in Physics and Engineering When you see this freshman’s majors, you think, “Overworked nerd that gets no sleep.”

And when you see this freshman on the LHU Swim team, you think, “Athlete with a chlorinedamaged brain.” It’s hard to combine the two but once you meet Kelly, you know that it’s somehow possible.

Kelly is admittedly a nerd but somehow she finds a way to be an exemplary student athlete who succeeds in her endeavors. Not only has she made it through a long swim season with 5:30am practices, but she has also managed to pass all of her classes and retain her nerd status while also being a fun person to be around.

Along with her cringe-worthy class schedule and tiring swim schedule, Kelly also finds time to be a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and is planning on joining the Physics Club. How she finds time to

do all this is a miracle even to me.

You’ll soon see Kelly writing for the “Nerding Out” column because her interests are of the nerdiest kind. Listening to her talk about space, the ocean and the depths of each is truly an interesting experience because her passion for both is spectacular. Kelly also loves to listen to music and color along with her love of swimming, sleeping and eating. Kelly is intelligent, athletic, insightful, creative and still somehow finds the energy (or lack thereof) to be a typical college student.

Because of Kelly’s interests in space and her degrees, she has lofty goals of working for NASA and one day going into space. Even if this goal doesn’t become a reality (even though I firmly believe that she is capable), Kelly has other goals of traveling for work (space is considered traveling right?) and making a genuine impact on people.

Kelly’s favorite poem is Do Not Go Gentle Into That Good Night by Dylan Thomas because she finds inspiration from it to not go down without a fight and this inspiring freshman with outstanding goals is definitely going to fight to achieve her dreams.

In the four years I have attended Lock Haven University, I have been asked the same question many times: what is like is to work and go to school at the same time? This is something people tend to ask when they are looking for a job and are nervous it will hurt their grades and work ethic.

Working while going to school is a challenge at times. When you first start college and work, it can be overwhelming because you don’t know how to balance school work and outside work.

Eventually, you’ll find a balance, though, so don’t worry too much. But right when you think you have the desired balance something changes, but hey that’s life.

Most jobs have normal hours which makes it nice. My job, a waitress at Haywood’s, on the other hand has a set time to go in but I’m never really certain when I will be done for the day. These unpredictable work hours can make waitressing stressful at times but you get used to it and find a way to work through it.

I start work between 4 and 4:30 and my shift ends usually late into the evening. Some days I can be done at 8 pm and some days not until midnight.

It all depends on business in the restaurant. While

working, I have to focus on my job and not school assignments which can be challenging at times.

When I know I have homework due by midnight, I hope to get off in timely manner because of my procrastination or when I’m focused on my 8 am tomorrow and have no idea how I will get all the reading done in time. We all procrastinate and even with my bad habits, I still manage to get it all done and be a good student. If you want to work and go to school, maybe don’t procrastinate as much as me.

The advantage of working while going to college is that you have money to spend. This way if your friends ask you to do something you can.

The disadvantages are that is makes it hard to meet with a group for a project or to have a social life during stressful weeks of the semester. During midterms and finals, it can be overwhelming. Even with the disadvantages, I believe that having a job through college has helped me become more organized as a person. I have to be able to prioritize what is most important like when the next assignment is due. Working has also given me a sense of independence. I honestly don’t know how I would have made it through college without a job and having something to take my mind off of school for a few hours a day a couple days a week.

First semester was fun, now it’s time to work Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu Finals week last semester might have been a wake-up call to most freshmen. College isn’t easy. You should realize that now. This isn’t high school where you can put minimum effort in and still pass your classes with flying colors. College is a job in itself. You need to put effort into your classes, you need to go to your classes, you need to do the work and you need to study. Some people, like myself, never studied in high school. But now, in college, I’ve studied longer and in more ways than I ever thought possible.

You may have spent your first semester having fun, going to parties, hanging with friends and doing anything else not school related, but now it’s time to buckle down because you have three and half more years of classes that you need to mentally prepare for. It’s only going to get harder from here but don’t worry too much; it’s doable.

You need to mentally accept that this is a job and you need to take it very seriously. You can’t goof off and expect good results. There are consequences to messing up. You can have fun, but you need to budget your time to fit in more schoolwork than fun time. If you need to skip going out with friends or hanging out with them, then suck it up and deal with it because they’ll

still be there but you only get so many chances with your classes.

Understand that you need to make sacrifices in order to do well.

If you can’t focus and get things done in your room, find a place on campus where you can. Go to the library, find a tutor or find a friend who realizes the need to study as well. If you get your other friends on board, make a study group in the library.

Just find a way or a group of people that will help you be a better student. Now is the time to find these people but even throughout your college career, you’ll find people who are willing to work with you.

Also, get involved on campus. Everything you do during college reflects on you and your future job search. Fill your resume with accomplishments and activities you’ve done throughout your years in college. As a senior, I know that this really pays off in the long run. These activities can be something fun and random or they can help you achieve your future goals. Even if campus activities aren’t your thing, do them with your friends. You’re killing two birds with one stone: getting involved on campus which helps enhance your college career and you get to hang out with friends while still accomplishing something.

College can still be fun while you do well in your classes.

Don’t think you’re sacrificing one for the other. You just need to find a balance but always stay focused on your classes. They’re what matter most right now.

Buying textbooks is perhaps one of the greatest struggles of the modern college kid. But in my experience at LHU, I’ve learned a few tricks. As I press on toward graduation, I want you, gentle reader, to have my tips and tricks for buying books cheaply.

1. Plan ahead. If you know your book list 2ish weeks before school starts, you can order books online at the cheapest shipping rates. The LHU bookstore website has a program where you can look up your books by class.

2. Use the ISBN. The ISBN is the code for the SPECIFIC VERSION of the book you need. When you look for books online, enter the ISBN number instead of the title. Check with your professor if you find a cheaper edition/

version of your text- often you need a specific edition for class.

3. Get Amazon Student. If you go to Amazon.com and enter your LHU email address, you qualify for Amazon Student. You get 6 months of free Amazon Prime- free 2-day shipping, Prime Video and more! After the trial period is over, you can get Prime at 50% off- $49/year.

4. Use the Bookstore. Our bookstore is awesome. But it won’t keep being awesome if we don’t support it.

While the textbooks are pretty much the same price (or even cheaper!) at the bookstore versus online, make sure you support the bookstore. They employ students, provide convenience and are always there to help.

5. Rent or Buy? If you can see yourself using this book as a reference in your future career/life, BUY IT. If you rent it, make sure to write down the due date. If your book is classic literature (like for an English class),

see if you can rent it at a local library or download an ebook (for much cheaper).

6. About online codes. Textbooks with online codes are becoming a highly expensive thing, especially in the Science and Language departments at LHU. Before you despair, check outside vendors for the book. Sometimes you can get the book itself for super-cheap, and buy the access code separately on the website for the course. Always check with your professor to see if you’ll need the access code for the class.

Buying books doesn’t have to be painful as long as you plan ahead, know where and when to buy, and come up with creative solutions.

Deep breaths. Graduation is coming…

Nerding Out: Sociology is everywhere, in words and actions Kiersten Beecher klb8371@lhup.edu Guest Writer In fancy terms, Sociology is the systematic study of the relationship between people and society.

Sociology also studies the origins of societies and how they develop. In everyday English, it is how society functions or, in most cases, does not function. For me, it is hard not to nerd out about sociology because taking sociology classes changes the way that you see the world around you and people watching gets taken to a whole new level.

Intro to Sociology is a general education that a lot of people don’t pay attention to because they are just taking it to fill a GenEd but when you actually listen to the theories or take a higher level course, that’s when everything changes.

Things as simple as overhearing a conversation in Bentley is drastically different when you can relate it to what you learned in class and you can point out the ideas behind what they said. Even when your friends say something and you have to hold back from telling them that they are only saying that because they don’t understand the larger picture and how the layers of different subcultures and paradigms, a social structure that affect the way we see things, play into the way people interact with the world around them.

It’s impossible to completely understand what it’s like to be in another person’s shoes but sociology helps to at least understand the trends in society and how they affect people’s perceptions and stereotypes. Even so much as identifying a concept when you see a bumper sticker on a car is sociology on a micro level. In class, it is called Symbolic interactionalism but that’s just a big theory name for the connection you make when you see that sticker.

There are macro concepts that look at societies as whole and not just individual interactions.

Structural Functionalism looks at the different components of society and how they work together to and function as a whole. This is like how education and laws and other parts of society work together to make our society function and that those concepts are in place because they function.

There is another macro theory called Conflict Theory which says that the unequal distribution of resources is what makes society work and that relationships are power struggles for these resources. Even though it’s called conflict theory it’s not negative, conflict is seen as a natural human interaction and that it is good for the development of society. Learning and understanding how these theories impact everyday life makes it hard not to nerd out about when you see examples in everyday life.

Choose to love yourself in the new year

As people across the world greet Baby New Year, advertisements for gyms and diets appear almost by magic.

Magazines and billboards, radio and television all scream “New Year, New You!” and insist that we need to alter some fundamentally incorrect aspect of our bodies. Every single year, I disagree.

In my 20 years, I’ve had my fair share of selfloathing and insecurities. I’ve lost 25 pounds just to gain it right back. I’ve hated my butt, my thighs, my stomach and my arms. I’ve pinched and prodded the skin, praying for the power to pull it right off my skeleton. And I’m tired of it.

For the past three years, I’ve discarded those

trite lose-those-last-15-pounds-and-look-hot-ina-bikini resolutions. Instead, my New Year’s resolution is to accept and love my body for what it is.

When you think about it, our bodies are capable of incredible feats.

They constantly inhale oxygen and pump blood through our veins. They fight off viruses and bad bacteria. Some of our bodies have or will create a new person. And they do all of this despite the abuse we put them through on a daily basis.

After all that our bodies do for us, why should we spend our next 60 years hating them? No one should waste their life lamenting the body they wish they possessed.

Love it or hate it, your body is the only one you will ever have; why waste it?

Does this mean that if you want to lose 10 or 15

pounds that you shouldn’t? Of course not!

However, I do want you to examine the reasons why weight loss is important to you. Who are you losing the weight for; will losing that weight help you love yourself?

People should exercise and eat healthy because it makes them feel good, not because they desire another body type.

Dance, lift weights, or swim because it makes you happy and ignore what everyone else says.

Self-love and body acceptance can happen at any weight, and a person who weighs 105 pounds can be just as unhealthy and unhappy as a person who weighs 205.

This year, reconsider your resolutions and make life changes that make you happy. The positive effects of practicing self-love will last much longer than that bikini will be in style.

Commuting conundrums cause cars chaos Kathleen Ellison Editor-in-Chief kae742@lhup.edu This winter so far has been truly a miracle beyond belief, especially for people like me who commute. I know for many commuting can be awful, especially for freshmen. It's also particularly awful for me in the winter.

I live out in the country on a beautifully scenic hill. My rocky driveway snakes about said hill for almost a third of a mile. My driveway and hill have been described in many ways such as: a glorified logging trail, Grinch hill, terrifying, a death trap and my personal favorite "that place in 'Criminal Minds' where the serial killer always takes his victims to."

When I was younger, even my friend's mother refused to drive up it in the summer, I would have to walk down to meet them.

Consequently, when winter hits, my normally intimidating driveway turns into an icy slide that not even a friendly Jamaican bobsled team would try going down (plus 100 points if you got that obscure reference).

The edges of my driveway don't really have guard rails so it's just this steep drop off to some trees and pond that ice and snow seem determined to send you to. Surprisingly, many don't like the idea of sliding off the edge of my driveway to go tumbling down to their death.

Normally this isn't a problem, I've gotten so good at sliding up and down my driveway

in my Taurus, I could probably star in "Fast and Furious: The Ice Age." I've also nailed down exactly how early I need to leave to make sure my car doors won't freeze open and suddenly fly open on the highway (for real that actually happened to me). Also, yes I said freeze open not close.

Despite my winter prowess, time and time again I found myself stuck in icy or snowy conditions unable to get to school (at least not in timely manner). I even missed a final once it was so bad.

It frustrates me to no end, especially since Lock Haven is not the best when it comes to delays or cancellations. Luckily, I've had so many wonderful professors who know how difficult it can be to commute, but every now and then I've had one that just doesn't care because if they can make it so can you.

So, often times my fear of uncaring professors will make me borrow a car that can handle the driveway and roads, but that leads to another problem. If I borrow a car that can handle the weather I can't park on campus because it doesn't have my decal.

Which brings me to the decal, I honestly don't understand why we can't use permits that can be hung from a mirror, so that if we need to use a different car we can just move it.

So Lock Haven University, when the snow hits (as I feel it eventually will), remember your commuters.

But why is the snow gone?

It is typical for people to complain during winter about how they want it to be summer already and vice versa. Usually I’m the one not complaining because seasons come and go and we have no control over it, but this winter I don’t care who complains because I’ll complain right along with you!

I thought last winter was bad, but last winter is nothing compared to this winter. Last winter we had a few snow falls, a couple of two-hour delays, and a day or two off from school. I didn’t mind the negative degree weather because after all, it was winter.

However, this winter there are some days when it feels like negative ten degrees and other days when it feels like sixty degrees. I can’t take the back and forth changes anymore!

Also, was Lock Haven the only place to not get hit with that huge blizzard?

My hometown is right outside of Philly and my parents sent me pictures of the three feet of snow they received, yet here we are with less than an inch and it is all melted.

If it is winter, I expect freezing temperatures, snow falling from the sky, and frost on my windshield. What I got this winter is the Snow Miser and Heat Miser fighting for control over Lock Haven’s weather.

We may not be able to control the weather but I don’t think the weather even knows what it wants anymore! If this is what winter is like, is summer going to be the same way?

I remember last year when it felt like winter was going to take over summer, but then summer crept its way back into the spotlight. I hope this year summer creeps up a little faster.

The one thing you can always count on when living in Lock Haven is strange weather. I have been here for four years and am still confused by it.

For now, stay warm during the cold days and watch out, because the snow can’t skip over Lock Haven forever.

Work part time, learn full time

If you're a college student, chances are that you've held a parttime job simultaneously. Maybe you worked as a bartender or server at a downtown restaurant.

Perhaps you've worked retail and spent more than a few hours standing on a padded mat behind a cash register, repeating the same greeting to a new customer every five minutes.

Whether or not you like your job, it's probably safe to assume that it's mostly a temporary gig to help you get by until you graduate.

I've personally worked at Walmart for approximately four years. In the grand scheme of things, that's not really a significant number. However, it has proven itself to be plenty of time to learn and develop skills for both the workplace and everyday life.

In those four years, I worked primarily in the backroom, shielding myself from customers and sticking with the position that allowed me to work comfortably with my assigned team, or sometimes by myself.

My job eventually required me to work outside of my comfort zone and while on the sales-floor, I managed to pick up a lot of social skills and gain a better grasp of customer service.

That being said, while I did learn a lot, I found myself growing less fond of my job. I like order and a decent routine, but every day at Walmart blended into the next.

Even considering that I only worked Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the school semesters, every day seemed the same, barring which of my fellow associates worked on any particular day.

I grew tired of my corporate life. I wanted something on a much smaller scale, yet with a wider variety of responsibilities and tasks.

It is now that I can officially say that I am done with Walmart.

Finding a non-corporate job that aligns with your preferred interests is a very taxing task, as I can now attest.

However, even with my official start date being two weeks away, I already feel as though I'm part of a tightly-knit family. What's more is that I have been told that opportunities within the field of my

major will actually be presented to me.

To be clear, this is not an article dedicated to lambasting Walmart and other major corporations.

After all, I have gained experience and learned skills there that I probably would have never had the opportunity to gather elsewhere.

Perhaps one of the greatest things I have gained experience in from balancing school with work is proper time management, especially considering that my shifts at Walmart lasted until one in the morning, or more recently, eleven at night.

If nothing else, anyone reading this should be able to understand, appreciate, or respect the ability to work while also being a full-time student.

In fact, I would implore that most, if not all college students consider picking up a job while they work towards their degree(s).

Yes, the added stress is a frightening thought. However, it's clearly manageable as evidenced by a majority of students on campus, and the abilities learned will make themselves apparent almost immediately.

Overcoming hardships and becoming a hero Nathan Davis Guest Writer When Comanche Garcia was a small boy, he watched as his mother and 15-year old brother were shot in cold blood before his very eyes. He was then the main witness at a double murder trial that convicted the two men responsible for the murders and put them in jail for 15 years.

Growing up in the Bronx, NY, in the 1980s, Comanche’s story wasn’t uncommon.

The story of how he went from orphan to military hero is.

“He definitely had some tough younger years,” Bellwood-Antis middle school teacher, Tom Partner, a lifelong friend of Comanche, recalled. “He saw two of his family members killed, which was obviously traumatic, as it would be for anyone.”

“I moved around the New York area a lot when I was young,” Comanche said. “The incident when I was a kid was definitely hard on me, but over the years I’ve come to terms with it and I think it’s made me stronger as a person.”

Through his connection to Bellwood-Antis, Comanche was able to rise above the tragedy of his early life.

Comanche was part of the Fresh Air Fund starting around the age of six, and spent summers in Bellwood with Charlie Boyer and his family. The Boyers adopted him when he was 10.

“I loved the town from the start,” Comanche said. “I think it was because I was here at such a young age, but everybody was so nice.”

Partner described him as a great student and friend.

“Comanche was athletic, compassionate, humorous, respectful and very hardworking,” Mr. Partner said. “He was the type of kid who would give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it.”

After settling in at Bellwood, it didn’t take Comanche long to fully immerse himself in the school and student life. A member of the varsity track, wrestling and football teams, he rushed for more than 1,300 yards as a senior. He was also a part of the school plays.

“He always had a positive attitude and he always went above and beyond, whether it was in the classroom or in his participation in sports,” said his high school Spanish teacher, Mrs. Christine Claar. “He was an inspiration to me and anyone else he came in contact with.”

After graduating in 1994, Comanche enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and later enrolled at Lock Haven University. He joined ROTC before going active into the United States Army National Guard. He served two tours of duty in the Middle East from 2005-2006 and 2008-2009.

He received the Bronze Star Medal in Iraq for exceptionally meritorious service while assigned as a combat logistic patrol leader during Operation Iraqi Freedom.

“Being part of the National Guard taught me discipline,” Comanche said.

“It also taught me to follow orders from my superiors no matter what; it was life or death.”

Lock Haven provided a positive experience as well.

“He started playing football there, but I could tell it wasn’t working for him, so I convinced him to try out boxing with me,” said Partner.

And try it out he did. Garcia was a national champion two out of his four years at LHU under coaches Kenneth Cox and Ken Cooper. He was also nationally ranked No. 1 in his weight class in both 2000 and 2002.

“I just fell in love with [boxing],” he recalled. “I loved the competitiveness of the sport.”

“His senior year, he beat the defending national champion from the Naval Academy, and he was a big dude,” Partner remembered with a grin.

Comanche now works at Rockview State Prison near State College.

“I really like my job,” he said. “I don’t feel sympathy for the inmates, but I do understand where they’ve come from.”

Comanche said that he hopes he can serve as an example for youth who

have faced hardships in their life.

“Hopefully I can be somebody who kids look up to and say, ‘Wow, I can do this too,’” he said.

Patrick Long tabbed as men’s soccer coach Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Tom Gioglio and the athletic department announced that Patrick Long has been named the 13th head coach in Lock Haven men’s soccer history.

Long, a 2008 graduate of Lock Haven University, beat out Dawson Driscoll (head coach at Marywood University) and Jesse Miech (head coach at University of Illinois Springfield) for the position.

While playing at LHU, Long was a two-time PSAC First Team selection, Third Team Academic All-American and a twotime team captain. Long graduated from Lock Haven with a Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education/Social Studies.

Post-graduation, Long joined the East Stroudsburg coaching staff for two seasons as a graduate assistant and assistant coach.

His next six seasons were then spent as the assistant coach operating under Brendan Nash, the head coach at Bucknell University. Nash saw growth from Long throughout the time they worked together.

“Patrick grew more comfortable each year in his communication with the student athletes,” said Nash. “He has a brilliant soccer mind, but it is always tough to enter an established program. Over the years he became more comfortable giving the feedback whether it was good or bad. In return, the student athletes became more comfortable approaching him for feedback.”

Long was immersed in the program and was afforded the opportunity to operate in nearly every facet of Nash’s program.

“Over six years he went from learning all the aspects of the program to now being able to handle any aspects of the program. Patrick was involved with coaching, recruiting, fundraising, offseason training and community relations,” Nash said. “I have no reservations that he will be able to hit the ground running at LHU. He was involved with all decisions and now he has the chance to cater it to his personality as well as the LHU student-athlete.”

Nash was effusive in his praise for Long as a person, not just as a coach. “[Lock Haven is] getting a very good coach, but an even better person. I would say he is hard working, loyal, knowledgeable, organized and has a passion for LHU. He has been ready to run his own program for years and LHU has found a gem. The student-athletes, the athletic department and the community will figure this out about Patrick and his family very quickly,” said Nash.

Nash, who has been the head coach at Bucknell for the past 17 seasons, believes that Long is the right coach for the Lock Haven program.

“I can say with certainty that the search commit picked the perfect coach for the job,” said Nash. “I expect nothing but future success for the program and I know the team and alumni will be ecstatic with the hire.”

Four swimmers set for PSAC Championships Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu The regular season for the Lock Haven University swimming team has come to an end, but fourth year head coach Joel Blesh has several swimmers set to participate in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships.

Danielle Parowski, Janel Llewellyn, Jackie Bingham and Nicole Martellotti will compete in a total of nine events at the Graham Aquatic Center in York, Pa. Parowski, a senior from Altoona Pa., has qualified for five of those nine events. The 100-yard freestyle (53.15), 200-yard freestyle (1:54.30), 500yard freestyle (5:08.59), 1,000-yard freestyle (10:50.53) and the 1,650-yard freestyle (18:12.14).

She currently owns the all-time Lock Haven record in the 200-yard freestyle, 500-yard freestyle, 1,000-yard freestyle and the 1,650-yard freestyle. Her all-time marks in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle were set at last year’s PSAC Championships.

Llewellyn was the lone freshman to qualify for Lock Haven and she did so in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:35.50) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:56.15).

Bingham qualified with a time of 2:16.59 in the 200-yard backstroke.

Martellotti earned her opportunity in the 100-yard backstroke with a time of 1:00.59.

Coach Blesh will have time to prepare his student-athletes as the PSAC Championships will be held from Feb. 18-21.

LHU Wrestling solid during winter break Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University wrestling team (6-7 Overall, 1-1 EWL) had a successful time while the students were away.

The Bald Eagles started the winter session at Morgantown, W.Va. to take on the West Virginia Mountaineers, who were ranked No. 25 in the nation at the time. Redshirt Senior Bobby Rehm earned the only win for the team as they lost 303. Rehm earned a decisive victory over Keegan Moore, 5-1.

Later that week, on the Dec. 17, Lock Haven hosted the only two home duals during the break against Messiah and Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) rival Bloomsburg. Messiah was ranked in the top five in Division III at the time. Bloomsburg was still looking for its first win. The wrestler with the biggest impact that night was Dan Neff (below), who returned to the 149-pound weight class after starting at 141 pounds. Neff was an All-American at 149 last year. Neff picked up wins against Messiah’s Adam Peris with a 24-9 technical fall and Bloomsburg’s Ryan Snow with another 20-4 technical fall.

Lock Haven later hosted the Lock Haven Classic Tournament at the Thomas Field House on Dec. 29. LHU finished third as team, falling behind second place Indiana University of the Big Ten

Conference and first place Pittsburgh University of the Atlantic Coast Conference. Other teams in the tournament included Bucknell (No. 4), Kent State (No. 5), Hofstra (No. 6), George Mason (No. 7), Binghamton (No. 8), Clarion (No. 9) and Messiah (No. 10). Dan Neff won the 149-pound tournament for Lock Haven.

Lock Haven started the New Year with a long trip to Phoenix, AZ for two matches against EmbryRiddle and Grand Canyon University. LHU won two huge matches with a final score of 40-9 against Embry-Riddle and 16-15 against Grand Canyon.

Aaron McKinney, Tyler Wood, Tristan Sponseller (right), Neff and Rehm all went 2-0 that night.

The two wins gave Lock Haven a season high fourmatch winning streak.

Ronnie Perry, who is redshirting this season, finished No. 6 at the prestigious Midland Championships at Northwestern University. Perry finished day one with a 4-0 record. Perry defeated the No. 8 and No. 1 seeds in day one, earning a trip to the tournament semifinals. Perry defeated Chris Mecate in the quarterfinals. Mecate was ranked third in the nation at the time. Perry lost all three of his matches in day 2 to finish sixth overall.

Ronnie became the first Bald Eagle to place in the Midland Tournament since Morgan Horner and Mike Maney in 2003.

Lock Haven ended the winter session of the season at Lawrenceville, NJ to take on Rider University. History was made when Dan Neff earned career victory No. 100. Despite losing to

Rider 27-6, Neff became the 17th member in the 100-win club for LHU. Neff earned the honor with a 10-3 decision over Jesse Rodgers.

An announcement was also made regarding two recruits for next season. Thomas Haines is set to transfer into the Lock Haven program. Haines is currently a freshman at Ohio State University.

Haines was a four-time Pennsylvania State champion from Solanco High School. Haines had a perfect 42-0 record his senior year. His overall high school record was 174-5.

Patrick Duggan, who is currently at West Virginia University, announced that he is also transferring to LHU. Duggan will have four years of eligibility remaining. Duggan was a fourtime Pennsylvania state placer and two-time state finalist. Duggan posted a 160-11 record at Cumberland Valley High School. He was also ranked No. 36 overall by Intermat in high school.

The Lock Haven University Wrestling team has a tough schedule to finish the season. Lock Haven hosts Cleveland State this Sunday, Jan. 31 at 1:00 p.m. and Edinboro next Thursday, Feb. 4 at 7:00 p.m. Lock Haven will also host Big Ten’s Michigan State for senior night at the Thomas Field House on Friday, Feb. 12 at 7:00 p.m. LHU wrestling also has the honor of hosting the EWL Conference Championships at the Thomas Field House on Saturday, March 5, where all EWL teams will be fighting for a spot the NCAA Division I National Championships at Madison Square Garden in New York City from March 17-19.
