LHU raises awareness for hunger in the community Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu To increase hunger awareness and food insecurity in the community, LHU’s MountainServe Center for Community Service held its annual Hunger Bowl where students and faculty teamed up to collect 4,334 nonperishable food items.

Different departments on campus helped promote the cause and collected donations with the Social Work Department leading the collection with more then 1,411 items this year. Along with the Recreation Management’s ‘Hunger wRECkers’, the Institute for International Studies held a ‘Bingo-for-Bellies’ game night to collect donations.

LHU’s Athletic Department continued their Reverse Trick-or-Treating event, which is when athletes go out and inform the community that if they put non-perishable cans in the bags provided by them, that they would be left with a goodie bag of candy in return.

Kelly Schlick, a senior studying sports administration and Sierra Pena, a junior also studying sports administration, were the leaders of the Hunger Bowl as well as the community engagement leaders of MountainServe. Pena said, “We were surprised that aside from clubs on campus, we did have a large number of individuals who contributed on their own.”

During last year’s hunger bowl, there were a total of 4,232 non-perishable donations and 25 clubs on campus participated. This year there were only 24 clubs that participated, but received 4,334 donations. The nonperishable items that were collected were donated to the Salvation Army, Blanchard Church, Women’s Center and Island Presbyterian.

Something new that was added to the competition this year was an educational component. Pena said,” Since the fundraiser is a competition, teams were awarded additional points if they educated themselves on hunger, whether that was making a poster, watching a video or writing a summary.”

Pena said, “Students can get involved by volunteering at the food pantries and churches and also get involved in the Hunger Bowl next year.” The hunger bowl is held every year from Oct. 1 to Nov. 2.

Valerie Page, a junior at LHU studying elementary education and special education said, “This year’s hunger bowl was a great experience. It was fun to compete for such a great cause and to support people in need.”

President Fiorentino answers students’ pressing questions COMM 290 Class Reporters President Michael Fiorentino recently visited a news reporting class to talk about what he does on a daily basis, the construction on campus, what he sees for LHU’s future and more.

Q: Are there any other renovation plans?

PF: “The next construction following Smith Hall will be the PUB. It is need of renovating. We are looking to improve the entrance of the PUB, update their computer systems, the game room and the bookstore. The side entrance facing the Student Recreation Center will be considered.

Q: How do you feel about the studying abroad opportunity students have?

PF: “The studying abroad options students can be apart of each semester is up to par. I like how faculty are allowed to travel with these students as well. People approach things differently when discovering a large city.”

Q:What does your work day consist of?

President Fiorentino: “I work with alumni and meet with vice presidents and faculty members. I deal with current responsibilities and future ones for the university.”

Q:Why did you apply to Lock Haven University?

PF: “When I was considering leaving the position I was in before, my wife and I wanted to be in a place where we felt comfortable and where we were able to engage on campus and in the community. I also appreciated that a high priority here at Lock Haven is the student’s education.”

Q: Were you able to design your new office?

PF: “No I wasn’t. I’m very pleased with the outcome; they did a nice job in using the space appropriately.

Now, we have a space which holds all the executives in one area making it more convenient. I didn’t plan this, but I probably have the best view on campus overlooking the river, it’s extremely beautiful.”

Q:Students have noticed Woolridge Hall being renovated now. What are your plans after that is complete?

PF: “Smith Hall will be renovated next. Ventilation needs improvement on all floors. The entrance will be more attractive and functional for students and their families. The bathrooms will be separated.”

Q: Explain to us your plans for Sullivan Hall next fall?

PF: “We plan on tearing down Sullivan Hall to make it an amphitheater.

The point of the amphitheater is to be used for orientation, club meetings, musical performance, marching band performance and any other recreational use.”

Q:Are you satisfied with the new renovation that replaces Russell Hall?

PF: “The tearing of Russell was very important. I like it. It provides a different feel for faculty and students.”

Q:What would be one thing you would like seen improved on campus in ten years?

PF: “I would focus more on the co-curricular activities campus offers. I want to improve classroom equipment as well as the academic programs we offer. Students need to master written, oral and partnership skills to be successful. The facilities on campus need to be improved. Recreation activities should have more leadership opportunities for students to apply for.”

Q: Lastly, What is your vision for the university down the road?

PF: “From an academic point of view, I want us to be in a position that we offer relevant and high quality programs that will lead our student to not only employment opportunities, but advancement opportunities. Secondly, I want an environment that supports the needs of students, that means the facilities have to be as current as they can be, for academic, socialization and recreational strength. My biggest aspiration is for Lock Haven University to be the number one university in the state system. 11/9/15 W Fourth Street Officer on mobile patrol initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle with a loud muffler. Driver found not to have a valid driver’s license and when driver opened glove box drug paraphernalia was inside. Individual charged with possession of drug paraphernalia.

11/7/15 Off Campus Request to assist LHPD. Report of a physical altercation with two males and a female. Officer responded and provided assistance until the LHPD gathered information. No further action was taken.

11/10/15 Sloan Officer observed a vehicle parked in loading zone with hazardous lights on with occupant inside of vehicle. Officer approached vehicle to speak to driver about parking in a no parking zone and detect a strong odor of marijuana. Driver admitted to smoking marijuana and drugs and paraphernalia turned over to officer. Individual charged with marijuana possession and paraphernalia.

11/7/15 Fairview Suites Medical emergency-female transported to LHER by ambulance.

11/8/15 North Hall Report of an intoxicated male in men’s restroom.

Officer responded and found a male on the floor passed out.

Ambulance requested and male transported to LHER for alcohol poisoning. Male will be charged with Underage Drinking.

11/10/15 Smith Hall Report of a theft. Female reported her bag was removed from her room over night. Female notified us and located her bag. Case closed.

11/9/15 Off-Campus Request to assist LHPD with a strong armed robbery.

Involved individuals detained while LHPD investigated the incident. One individual was taken into custody for a state parole violation.

Officer returned to campus.

11/11/15 Bentley Report of retail theft. Employee observed male remove juice and salad from the cooler. Male was attempting to pay for juice only and realized employees were watching him and paid for salad and juice. Management requested a trespass letter be issued to male. Male issued trespass letter from Public Safety.

11/9/15 Off-Campus Request to assist LHPD with a 302 who walked away from the hospital. Search ended in negative results.

11/11/15 North Fairview Street Officer on mobile patrol initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle with only one headlight operational. Officer detected a very heavy presence of burnt marijuana

5 and in plain view observed a marijuana bowl that was actively ignited. Driver admitted to smoking marijuana prior to the traffic stop. Male had bloodshot, glassy eyes and distant gaze. Passenger in vehicle was girlfriend and a minor child. Male taken into custody and transported to Lock Haven Hospital for chemical testing. Drug paraphernalia confiscated. Charges for DUI, marijuana possession and paraphernalia filed.

11/12/15 Fairview Suites Report of harassment. No contact letters issued to involved individuals by RD. Individuals advised of the charges that would be filed if harassment continues.

11/12/15 Fairview Suites Report of theft of personal items missing. Under investigation.

11/12/15 Susquehanna Ave Traffic stop on a vehicle with a headlight out and no inspection. Verbal warning.

11/12/15 North Hall Report of a missing person. Officer attempted to located person through class schedule, University cameras, etc. RD notified officer stating missing student’s father contacted and female is living at home. Case closed.

11/12/15 Fairview Suites Report of screams coming from a room. Officer made contact with RD, RA and went to room making contact with female resident. Female resident received personnel information through video chat and was shocked by the information. Female was provided professional contact information if emotional support is needed.

11/12/15 Susquehanna Ave Traffic stop initiated on a vehicle traveling at a high rate of speed. Verbal warning to slow down.

‘Fallout 4’: An apocalypyical blast Jordan Kruise Guest Writer jtk6505@lhup.edu When you’re walking down the electronics aisles and can’t decide what movie or video game to purchase, you’ll probably notice the shortage of one game in particular this year. That game would happen to be “Fallout 4” of Bethesda studios, another sequel straight from their massively loved “Fallout” series.

What’s so great about this game you ask? Well this game includes the following: action, violence, danger, risks, comic relief, exploration and the most important for any bored gamer which is an adventure worth taking on. “Fallout 4” is similar to the previous two games: “Fallout 3” and “Vegas.”

In many ways, however, it is a completely different game, where after being let out of the Vault-Tec vault, you plunge into a whole new route filled with unique towns that have been salvaged and still held together after all the nuclear bombing.

Inside these ruined areas, once heavily populated and filled with laughter and friendly faces, are now the broken remnants and toppled over power lines. One thing that hasn’t changed is that these areas aren’t empty and

unpopulated. However, the residents of these towns are either rabid, flesheating, feral ghouls or killer mutants that want any vault dweller dead in a heartbeat.

The game mechanics are very similar to the previous titles for the Xbox 360, PS3 and PC; the only difference is that the graphics are way better and have more realism to them than its predecessors. The Scenic roads and gloomy surroundings almost seem like you’re traveling in a real place, especially when you see the foggy power stations and brick buildings that were once used by the residents.

The only con is that the game’s current version happens to glitch every once in awhile, but don’t fret; it happens in any game. I’d advise anyone playing for the first time to take it extremely carefully and stick to the game’s main storyline instead of wondering off on your own at first because it will end in certain death.

I’d also advise anyone with free time on their hands to buy this game and play it to its fullest. Bethesda games did a great job on this addition to the “Fallout” franchise. Thank you for reading and push on fellow adventure seekers.

Coming soon in November Mary Jones A&E Editor mej102@lhup.edu Looking for a movie to watch over the Thanksgiving break this year? Well, even though these three have nothing to do with the holiday, here are some movies coming out in the next two weeks!

1. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2” Picking up right where the previous “Mockingjay” left off, this movie will be the exciting conclusion to “The Hunger Games” series.

Based off of the 2010 young adult novel by Suzanne Collins and directed by Francis Lawrence, this movie returns to the nation of Panem, a futuristic dystopian United States, as the districts are starting to be destroyed by the Capitol.

The reluctant leader of the

rebellion, Katniss Everdeen, played

by Jennifer Lawrence, must lead an army against the leader of the nation, President Snow, while trying to keep everything she holds dear safe as well.

This movie hits theaters tomorrow, Nov. 20.

2. “The Good Dinosaur” From the amazing studio of Disney Pixar and directed by Peter Sohn, “The Good Dinosaur” is set in an alternate timeline in which the asteroid never hit Earth. As a result, the dinosaurs never went extinct.

The story centers around a young Apatosaurus (long-neck) named Arlo (voiced by Raymond Ochoa) who loses his father in a tragic accident (thank you, Disney).

As an orphan, he grows up in the Clawed-Tooth Mountains, where he accidently falls into a river and gets knocked out by a rock. Having drifted

far downstream, he awakes to find himself far from home. While trying to find his way back, he befriends a human cave boy he names Spot, and the two travel together.

This movie finds its way into theaters Wednesday, Nov. 25.

3.“Victor Frankenstein” Yet another take on the old “Frankenstein” tale, directed by Paul McGuigan, this movie is told from the perspective of Igor (played

by Daniel Radcliffe), the assistant of Frankenstein.

In this movie, we see more into the troubled past of Igor and his redemptive friendship with the medical student, Viktor Von Frankenstein, and how Igor became the eyewitness to the emergence of how Frankenstein became the legend that we know today.

This story comes to theaters Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Mike Eubanks Staff Writer mae7020@lhup.edu Most electronic games seem to follow a fairly predictable arc from announcement to release.

The industry has had its fair share of over-hyped failures and disappointing cancellations though. A long list of products have over promised but still managed to under deliver after a lengthy and costly development cycle.

Other ambitious titles have been so ahead of the available technology that the developers are either not able to complete them, or they disappoint when they finally hit the market. Titles like “Duke Nukem Forever” seem to languish so long in the development cycle that the industry outpaces them.

Studio closures and lack of funding also have a history of killing nascent projects before they reach completion. Perhaps the most frustrating category for eager fans is Vaporware. Vaporware is a project that has been officially announced, but languishes in development limbo.

These titles are never officially canceled, but they are also never completed. Original release dates pass without further news on the project. Sometimes a “leaked” piece

of concept art or an early screenshot will surface, but eventually the official buzz dies down.

There is no concrete standard for when a late title becomes Vaporware. Sometimes a title takes longer than expected to produce, but the developer continues to remind their potential customers that it exists. Then there are titles like “Half-Life 3.” The “Half-Life” series is a fan favorite, going back to the release of the original title in 1998.

“Half-Life 2” appeared in 2004 to wider acclaim than the original. In lieu of a traditional expansion, the developers released an episodic content extension.

Episodes 1 and 2 followed fairly quickly, with the 2nd episode ending in a cliffhanger.

Episode 3 never came. It was eventually revealed the episodic approach had been abandoned, and that a full sequel to the series would be produced in order to take advantage of technological advances. For those still waiting for news on the long awaited sequel, the silence is deafening.

“Half-Life 3” is perhaps one of the more famous examples of Vaporware, but the industry is littered with examples. Sometimes they quietly emerge into the marketplace, but often they become the industry equivalent of Elvis sightings. Fans want to believe but the release date simply fades into the past.

Jo’s notable albums of 2015 Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu This year has been great for music. Here are my picks. Yes, I left out Tame Impala, so sorry.

Joanna Newsom- “Divers” Released only this month, “Divers” is a return to Newsom’s ethereal, heavily lyrical tales set to music. If you are not familiar with Newsom’s music then you had best start with one of her earlier albums: there’s a lot to take in here.

With lush layers of production, Newsom’s childlike voice, and lengthy, densely symbolic lyrics combine masterfully, but to an overwhelming effect for the virgin listener. The space in these stories is vast, as reflected in the album art, and the words and harp are a bewitching combination. If you’re not there for the words, you’re missing out, but the atmosphere will capture you anyway. For those that would call Newsom’s lyrics dense for the sake of denseness, you are ruining this party, sir, please leave while you have the chance.

Sufjan Stevens- “Carrie and Lowell” If you’re not moved to tears by this album then you are a monster. Like salt to a wound, this album will find you, and you will sting with sentimentality.

Steven’s soft voice and folky guitar combine to create a safe space which you quickly learn is full of death, nightmares and sentiments so sweet they start corroding your flesh.

The album is dedicated to Stevens’ mother who recently passed away.

It’s a meditation on letting go and accepting death as a friend. The intimate portraits Stevens paints of people in his music have become fully formed characters in my mind who I recall fondly. If you like melancholy without melodrama, you’ll love this.

Kendrick Lamar- “To Pimp a Butterfly” Produced by one of music’s weirdest and most unique producers, George Clinton, and featuring the shiver-inducing saxophone skills of Kamasi Washington, I’d call it the biggest album of the year. When I’m middleaged, every high schooler will still be listening to this album. It’s a sweeping introspective concept album that creates and riffs on fresh metaphors for ongoing issues. There’s half a jazz band present at all times.

The narrative follows a lost soul, tormented by the devil, in this case, a wily woman named “Lucy”. Lamar takes on a messianic role and invents characters with which to converse about the darkness of society, the beauty of the human soul and what it means to be famous. I frequently get overly excited at parties while talking about this album.

Father John Misty- “I Love You, Honeybear” This is the least objective pick on the list. I say that because it breaks no major boundaries and didn’t cause a great stir, playing on cliched principles of masculinity. J. Tillman (Misty) is an assemblage of the “rockstar” image.

That being said, I listen to this album on the daily, identifying with Misty’s achey Johnny Cash meets Jim Morrison voice and reveling in his larger than life image.

The album consists of narratives ranging from “let’s get married even though we don’t believe in marriage” to “I’m going to stop sleeping around this is getting dangerous” to “America is sucking the life out of me while I suck its tit”, all told in beautiful cadence with a life-affirmingly entitled attitude. Sex appeal goes a long way with me.

How to survive Thanksgiving with your stomach intact Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu

feel like you’re going to explode this break, make sure to eat something in the morning. A yogurt or piece of fruit will do.

We all know that with Thanksgiving comes a plethora of food babies. For some of us, this is a good thing and you don’t mind it. For others, Thanksgiving is a guilty pleasure. We love eating all of the amazing food but later we feel so guilty about it. Either way, eating so much food is tough on our bodies so here are a few tips on how to make it through Thanksgiving without going into a food coma.

I know the food looks and smells delicious but, unless you live with a pack of wolves, the food will most likely still be there by the time you finish bits of it. It takes your brain twenty minutes to register fullness so take your time eating, enjoy it, savor it, don’t just choke it down. Try just putting your fork down between bites and talking to the people around you.

This will help you slow down the shoveling process.

Start the day with physical activity.

In my family, the men go play football while the women clean and cook (stereotypical, I know) but the guys had the right idea. Physical activity regulates your appetite and jump starts your metabolism. Great for a day of eating right? Go for a light jog around the block or make a stop at the gym. If you’re my mom and I, do a couple laps up and down the stairs because we get our own workout running around the house like we do.

Eat breakfast.

Skipping a meal slows down your metabolism and encourages overeating. If you don’t want to

Eat slowly.

Eat more vegetables.

The turkey, mashed potatoes and stuffing are great but they’re also very filling. If you put more vegetables on your plate, you can eat more of those for less calories and you won’t feel as grossly full in an hour.

Try not to eat seconds.

I know it’s good. I know you want to eat more of it but try to resist. There will definitely be leftovers if your family cooks as much as mine.

You’ll be able to experience the wonderful flavors of Thanksgiving the next day for lunch or dinner.

Stay hydrated.

Drink water throughout the day. Most of the time when we feel hungry, we’re actually thirsty because we’re dehydrated. Keep drinking water and that will help regulate your body and you can process everything you eat better.

Plus you should drink water regularly throughout the day anyway.

Take precautions.

If you wear a tight pair of jeans, you’ll know when you’ve hit your max. Your pants will be tight and uncomfortable so you know to take it easy. If you don’t care about eating too much then unbutton your pants and take a deep breath before digging back in.

Don’t worry about a diet.

It takes a long time of overeating to gain weight so one day of an increased diet won’t be so detrimental. Just be smart about the day. But it’s Thanksgiving. Eat! Photos from freedigitalphotos.net

Be the Ripple: Advocacy group educating on mental illness Taylor Smela Staff Writer tgs8726@lhup.edu Mental illness is a topic in society that is often brushed aside because people either do not feel comfortable speaking about it, or feel they are not knowledgeable enough about the subject to discuss it.

Brittany Caufman, a senior majoring in Psychology at Lock Haven University, and myself, noticed this stigma behind the silence of mental illness and decided to establish Be The Ripple in order to change it. Be The Ripple is a non-profit advocacy group that strives to educate the public about psychiatric illness, particularly eating disorders. Be The Ripple promotes positive body image and self-acceptance, especially among young collegiate women.

Co-Founder of Be The Ripple, Brittany Caufman, said, “It’s important to inform the public about mental illness, especially eating disorders because they have the highest mortality rate of

any mental illness.” According to the National Alliance of Mental Health, one in four adults suffer from mental illness, and out of those affected, more than half received no medical treatment for their illness.

Many people, especially young adults, are afraid to reach out for medical attention for their mental illness because they are afraid of being seen as a freak. Many are afraid of their illness and believe it will go away on it’s own. Be The Ripple acts as a support system for those affected by mental illness. We encourage those affected to seek treatment and not be ashamed of their illness and to talk about it. Be The Ripple showcases stories of treatment to show others that recovery is possible.

By starting a ripple, we hope to begin a wave of awareness and education for those affected by mental illness and end the stigma of silence behind psychiatric illness.

You’re addicted to the snooze button, aren’t you?

Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu Believe it or not, when the snooze alarm first came out, it was a luxury. Now it’s an addiction.

Many of us hit snooze a ridiculous amount of times, myself included, and we know it’s bad for us, but we just want five more minutes in our cozy beds before we have to face the world.

Lately, the snooze button has been getting me into trouble. I’ve become so used to habitually hitting the snooze that I don’t even remember hitting it most days anymore. I snooze so many times that I’m dangerously close to being late to everything. I usually wake up just in time to rush through getting ready and sometimes I have to forgo certain steps in getting out the door. If you’re like me, here are some tips we should probably start following: Don’t set your alarm clock so early.

I set my alarm clock so that I can have 45 minutes of snooze time most days. This isn’t good. It’s depriving us of much needed NREM

and REM sleep. The snoozing disturbs our REM sleeps and doesn’t let us have a full NREM and REM cycle. Disturbing our sleep cycles like this is impairing our mental functioning throughout the day.

Figure out your own internal clock One of the reasons we hit snooze all the time is lack of sleep. So we need to evaluate what our body needs in terms of sleep. Are you a night owl or a morning person? Do you need eight hours of sleep or do you get by on six? You need to evaluate your sleep habits and figure out a schedule that works for you, rather than fighting your body’s natural instincts. Once you’ve done that, set your internal clock by going to bed and, most importantly, waking up at the same time every day. Waking up at the same time everyday tells your biological system when to get up everyday.

Set your alarm clock out of reach in the morning This forces you to get out of bed. It also helps you fall asleep without the distraction of texting and late night social media browsing. Forcing it away from us before bed will help us get to bed at a reasonable time. When you do get up to turn off

your alarm, don’t get back in bed. Make your bed or drink a glass of water instead. This will help wake you up and get rid of the temptation.

Reward yourself Give yourself an incentive to wake up. Once you’re awake, do something enjoyable to help give your brain a boost for waking up. I love to read, so my enjoyable act would be to read a chapter before starting my day.

We all know how hard it is to wake up, especially when you have to wake up early and it’s still dark and cold out. No one wants leave their cozy bed for that but we have to. Just start with these simple tricks and maybe it’ll get easier.

Just force yourself out of bed every morning when your alarm goes off and eventually it will become a habit.

Good luck waking up, we’ll all need it.

Where in the World: United Arab Emirates Raymond Stellhorn Columnist rjs2091@lhup.edu The United Arab Emirates or UAE, as it is abbreviated most modern, westerly influenced and wealthy countries in the Middle-East. It is located on the southeast side of the Arabian Peninsula along the Persian Gulf between Oman and Saudi Arabia. The UAE is divided into seven emirates, the two largest being Abu Dhabi and Dubai, which are each ruled by an absolute monarch. Out of those monarchs, one is chosen to be President of the entire nation. The overwhelming majority of the population is made up of expatriates, people temporarily or permanently residing in a country other than their own.

Abu Dhabi, the capital city of the UAE and the second largest population, has become a playground for the world’s entrepreneurs and rich. In the streets, one will find all types of exotic sports cars such as Ferraris and Lamborghinis as one would see pick-up trucks in Lock Haven. It is considered the fourth most expensive city in the region for

expatriates. However, there also family attractions on offer such as Ferrari World, an amusement park themed around the Ferrari brand. Also there are countless concerts and events taking place, for example, the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Racing Grand Prix. The most iconic sights are the Etihad Towers and Emirates Palace.

Dubai is the largest populated city in the UAE and is very similar to its counterpart Abu Dhabi. Both cities are very luxurious, have loads of attractions and events on offer, and both have massive towering skylines. In particular, the tallest building in the world is located in Dubai, called Burj Khalifa, standing at 2,722 feet tall, approximately twice the height of the Empire State Building. Also the Burj Al Arab is one of the most iconic buildings of the Middle East, shaped like a sail of a ship. Not all of the UAE is modern; there are numerous historic mosques and forts.

The United Arab Emirates features future architectural designs today with a luxurious lifestyle on offer for the rich and home for Westerners in the Middle East, while also still holding onto its Arab routes.

Study Abroad Stories: London, England & Paris, France Aindrea Williams Guest Writer alw1476@lhup.edu This past summer, I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Europe for ten days. I spent 5 days in London and 5 days in France. Before I left for Europe, I had a preconceived notion that everyone in France would be stuck up and constantly wearing berets and striped shirts, but I was quickly set straight on this notion upon my arrival in Paris.

During my time in Paris, France, I was truly able to immerse myself in European culture.

The food was amazing; I was able to get a taste of crepes, tiramisu and escargot. I was able to visit amazing places such as Musée Louvre, the Eiffel Tower and the Palace of Versailles. The view from the Eiffel Tower was honestly the most breathtaking thing I’ve ever seen.

On my fifth day abroad, we boarded a train to our next destination, London, England. I had an amazing time there and was able to see Buckingham Palace, Big Ben and the Covent Garden. The other students and I also got to go to the Tomorrowland premiere and saw the play, Wicked, while we were in London.

My favorite thing about London was visiting the beautiful parks such as Finsbury Park and Green Park. They had beautiful scenery; I felt like I was in a magical garden.

The culture in Europe is slightly different than in the United States. Everyone there has a smartphone, but does not seem to be as engulfed in their phones as Americans are. They are more present in conversations and truly listen when you speak to them. The people in Europe, especially London, were also more polite and used manner much more frequently than Americans do.

I was also astonished to learn that there is virtually no crime in many parts of Europe. The police officers I came across didn’t carry guns or any type of weapon.

Overall, I had an amazing time in Europe.

I became so much closer to the other student on the trip and learned a lot about cultures different than my own. This was my first time overseas and it was a fantastic experience. I cannot wait to travel more in the future.

Redirect the traces of secondhand smoke Joshua Cenderelli Staff Writer jxc3298@lhup.edu It always seems as though I get stuck behind someone who is smoking a cigarette wherever I walk every day. Smoking should not be something that is allowed in public because of the adverse health effects it has on non-smokers.

Pennsylvania has one of the highest youth smoking rates with Pennsylvanian youths making up about 18.4 percent. Smoking is a behavioral dependence caused by a nicotine addiction.

Nicotine is a powerful psychoactive drug, which is the most physically addictive of all psychoactive drugs. Nicotine essentially “tricks” the brain into creating pleasant associations with sensory stimuli or environmental cues that trigger the urge for a cigarette.

Smoking sends over 7,000 chemicals to the brain, which get there in seconds via the bloodstream, including 70 known carcinogens. There are 480,000 deaths attributed to smoking each year, 10 percent of which are related to secondhand smoke.

Secondhand smoke is often more harmful because there is no filter. Not only do non-smokers receive the smoke that a smoker exhales or blows out, but we also get the smoke coming out of the non-filtered end of the cigarette.

E-cigarettes are also not as safe as they seem, the FDA has found varying levels of toxic chemicals and carcinogens in leading brands.

LHU’s “Smoking and Tobacco Policy Statement” does little to go in depth on smoking and just highlights where students are not allowed to smoke. To save you from reading the page-long document, don’t smoke in smoke-free buildings, which is all of them.

However, the U.S. is seeing a trend that more and more deaths are being attributed to secondhand smoke every year. Secondhand smoke exposure contains two times more tar, five times the carbon monoxide and fifty times more ammonia than that which a smoker inhales.

I firmly believe that LHU should implement a smoking policy that restricts smoking to designated areas, these areas would be low foot-traffic areas where students would not be exposed to it nearly as much. This would be a step in the right direction

in which I believe LHU should completely ban smoking. This would benefit both smokers and nonsmokers as well as the community as a whole.

With these designated smoking areas, LHU would experience cleaner air in certain areas, and other areas, those designated as smoking areas, would not.

However, implementation would allow areas that are heavily trafficked such as those between Bentley and Akeley as well as the area from the Rec Center to East Campus to be much cleaner and furthermore better to walk through. These designated areas could be done in the same way that amusement parks, and other universities have done it, oftentimes creating gazebos with built-in receptacles.

The question of the placement of these is another question, one in which can be answered depending on the foot traffic of the areas. However, these would again be steps in the right direction to ban smoking to promote the health of the community.

A complete ban would allow for a much healthier environment and aid in preventing diseases such as cancer and coronary diseases.

The never ending story of “coming out” Diosanny Rivera Staff Writer dkr6862@lhup.edu I’ve been out as a member of the LGBTQ+ community since my freshman year of high school 7 years ago. I thought that once I came out, that was it; I wouldn’t have to keep telling people I was bisexual, but boy was I wrong.

I have to “come out” in some way, shape, or form on almost a weekly basis. It is not a one-time deal. It’s a constant cycle of telling people that you don’t conform to the heteronormative idea.

Every time I meet someone new I have to come out all over again. Every time someone asks me if I’m dating someone, I have to come out all over again. And each of those times, I have to gage whether or not they are accepting of queer individuals before deciding to tell them I am one.

If I tell someone I have a girlfriend, I have to be aware of their reaction so I know if it’s safe to keep talking about her or not. I always have to be on guard because you never know when someone is

going to be against who you are or hate you for who you love.

I find that it’s a lot easier to be queer on a college campus than it is to be queer in the “real world”. Most people on college campuses tend to be accepting (or at least tolerating) of LGBTQ+ individuals.

I’m not saying that everyone is, but the majority are.

If I talk about my experiences in a classroom, I don’t worry as much about people’s reactions as I do when I leave this campus. Coming out over and over again at LHU isn’t as stressful as coming out over and over again in the real world.

Everyone assumes that every single person they meet is straight and so those who aren’t have to constantly break that assumption. It happens to every single LGBTQ+ individual and it will continue to happen until being straight isn’t the automatic assumption for everyone.

Campus protests and the bloated reaction to PC Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu

Political correctness is changing its face. When talking about the “safe-speech” movements occurring on college campuses over the last month, we must recognize that “p.c.” is a misnomer. I think of the term as a conservative buzzword, used to chastise a threatening left. The term is so broad reaching that it has lost most of its value.

If you do a broad sweep of social media, you will see students standing up for each other and against the detrimental attitudes of major institutions that have been left unchecked for decades.

These students are asking to have some democratic say in the ethical leanings of an institution they are giving their money to.

Students have little power in the university system, where schools are not run by student officials or educators, but by untouchable administrators. When we talk about this issue, we must acknowledge that protest can be unreasonable, while the oppressing force is also unreasonable. Institutional racism is the preeminent example of this idea.

Ultimately, the response to the “safe-space” idea has been blown out of proportion by the paranoid members of the Baby Boomer generation.

Scale is an important component of this discussion. Politically correct zealotry may be a threat to certain individuals expressing their opinions on the internet, but it is not really a threat to democracy. Obviously, within the rule of American law, the p.c. left has limited power. It can shut down or intimidate critics on some campuses in troubling ways, but since it is operating on American soil, it can’t threaten the framework of the Constitution.

In an interview last week, President Obama told George Stenfanopoulos of New York Magazine that students attempting to ban speakers or works they do not agree with is a “recipe for dogmatism”.

So why are college students responding this way? Perhaps logic

and reasoning, though it checks out in theory, has not worked.

As a college student, I know and understand political protest of the past. I think of the Free Speech Movement, which took place in 1964 on the Campus of the University of California, Berkeley. Nearly 800 students, who were protesting the censure of civil rights activism on campus, were arrested from the sitin. Protests like these are part of American mythos at this point, and students do understand the methods they employ. The strategies they are employing now, however ineffectual, indicate exacerbation. What is being called “the Anti-Free Speech Movement” is a writhing mass of chaos happening on college campuses around the country. There are many different factions of people involved.

Some seem to believe in censure, but most are lobbying for control.

Lumping these individual movements together and dismissing them as “obnoxious” is not the correct approach. Not all of these movements are equal. A good example of the difference between these movements can be observed in the protests at the University of Missouri and Yale.

In October, students at Yale began protesting for the resignation of a college official who sent an email “asking” students to be sensitive to racial issues when choosing Halloween costumes. A student quickly took on the International Affairs Committee which sent out the email. Under the traditional definition of political correctness, the suggestion in the email would be valued. The tension on Yale’s campus over race and the fight against bureaucratic control has reached a peak, but, without a focused nucleus of power to bring down, students are under backlash from the media, and criticism from academic communities around the country. But other movements, like the one at the University of Missouri, deserve more credit.

At the University of Missouri, Payton Head, student government president, first raised concerns about bigotry on campus on Sept.

12. In October, "Concerned Student 1950" was created, referring to the

first year the University of Missouri admitted black students. Since then , student Jonathan Butler launched a hunger strike, vowing not to eat until the president resigned and black football players announced they would not practice or play until their president resigns, possibly costing the university a fine of $1 million.

Jesse Ballenger, a secondary education major here at Lock Haven, helped organize a “Stand with Missouri” event which took place Nov. 18. near the fountain on Ivy Lane. Ballenger says that “Instead of an affront to free speech, this is the epitome of free speech. This is the application of free speech with its original intentions in mind. We may choose to let this movement fall on deaf ears or to ignore the implications of their demands, however these issues are becoming significantly harder to simply ignore.”

What these movements have shown is that there is a large number of students who are discontent with the university system. Those which capture media attention are either the largest or most extreme.

One way in which the protests are limiting themselves is their war with the media. In the past, the media has been key to publicizing protests and gaining support. At the protest on Missouri’s campus yesterday, protesters barred journalists from covering the demonstrations.

Although it is not clear why they are doing this, I expect it is to limit sensationalism and keep the message centered on campus relations.

Despite their differences, these protests bring to light disagreements with the way authority is imposed on college campuses. When a large majority of the student population disagrees with the tacit rules of the institution they are paying for, it should be hard to dismiss. The opposition often cites “helicopter parenting” as the real culprit of these controversies. The idea that students are not self-sufficient, that we lack work ethic, that we do not understand the pace of the world we will step into when we graduate, is a fallacy. When an authority speaks down to students, patronizing them collectively for a perceived societal

flaw they cannot control, they are in fact taking away the power of critical thought and individual opinion that they are condemning the lack of.

Can this movement be taken to an unhealthy level? As far as it is a movement, of course! Attempting to apply p.c. universally, disregarding cultural boundaries and educational purposes, can go too far. But that does not make it illegitimate. The same slippery slope ideology is common among gun-rights activists who claim that some regulation always leads to too much.

The complexity of these issues is stretching further and further. At the University of California, attempts are being made to ban anti-Israel speech.

Under the most stringent regulations, students found to be in violation of these codes would face suspension or expulsion. One of the school’s Regents most vocally advocating for the more stringent version of the speech code is Richard Blum, the multi-millionaire defense contractor who is married to Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California.

As events unfold, it is important to remember that every campus movement is separate, just as every university has its own institutional values. To dismiss the protests, you are both taking agency away from students, and ignoring important racial and social tensions...

Men’s basketball starts season 2-0

The Lock Haven University men’s basketball team got off to a quick 2-0 start to the season by winning both games in the Wolf’s Bus Line Classic at Shippensburg University over the weekend.

In the season opener against Nyack on Friday afternoon, junior guard Bootsie Walker nailed a game-winning jumper with 12 seconds to play to lift Lock Haven to a 7571 victory.

Walker, a preseason All-Conference selection, had 16 points on 5-10 shooting while going 6-6 from the free throw line.

Lock Haven (2-0) trailed by 11 about midway through the first half before making a small spurt in which Al Blount hit a three to put the Bald Eagles up 27-25, their first lead of the game. Blount nailed another three on Lock Haven’s next possession to give the Eagles a 32-29 lead.

The redshirt-senior guard had 15 points while shooting 4-7 from three point range.

Nyack eventually took a 36-35 lead into halftime.

Trailing 69-68 with two minutes left in a back and forth second half, Brahieme Jackson made a layup, got the foul and knocked down the free throw to give Lock Haven a 71-69 lead.

Robert Tyler tied the game at 71 for Nyack with 33 seconds left, and then Walker took over.

Walker put the Bald Eagles up 73-71 with a jumper with 12 seconds to play. Walker nailed two free throws with three seconds left, ultimately giving Lock Haven a 75-71 victory.

Jackson chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Bald Eagles and Ra’eese Hunt had seven points and four rebounds off the bench.

The men’s basketball team followed up Friday’s win with an 88-62 victory over Penn State Lehigh Valley on Saturday afternoon.

In all, 12 different players scored for Lock Haven led by junior guard Shawn Church. Church shot 5-10 from the field while grabbing two rebounds and dishing out three assists.

Hunt and Blount each chipped in ten points in the balanced scoring attack for Lock Haven.

Junior Craig Slade had nine points and seven rebounds in 18 minutes and Jackson had nine points and five rebounds in ten minutes of action. Senior Elijah Cooper had a solid outing, scoring four points, grabbing five rebounds and dishing out seven assists in 20 minutes.

Overall, Lock Haven shot 50 percent from the floor, including 81 percent from the free throw line. The Bald Eagles also assisted on 15 of their 29 field goals.

Both Jackson and Walker were named to the 2015 Wolf’s Bus Line Classic All-Tournament Team for their roles in leading Lock Haven to a 2-0 start to the season.

Lock Haven will travel to California (Pa.) on Saturday for their second PSAC game, with tipoff being set for 3p.m.

Mountain named USTFCCCA Atlantic Region Athlete of the Year Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lhup.edu Senior Dylan Mountain (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) of the Lock Haven University men’s cross country team has been named the 2015 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Atlantic Region Men’s Athlete of the Year.

LHU was one of just three teams that saw their entire top-seven earn USTFCCA All-Region status. To earn All-Region honors, one must finish among the top-25 finishers at the regional championship meet.

Mountain cruised to the individual title at the 2015 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships, held last Saturday at Lock Haven. LHU was second overall at the championships, earning a spot in the upcoming national meet.

Matt Guiod (Lincoln, Maine/Mattanawcook Academy), Addison Monroe (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County), Ben Robinson (Tunkhannock, Pa./High Point Univ.), Jacob Fetterman (Sugarloaf, Pa./Hazleton), Alex Diltz (Mertztown, Pa./Kutztown) and Jereamy Hall (Waldorf, Md./Westlake) all earned All-Region honors by way of top-25 finishes.

The Bald Eagles were also ranked No. 11 in the final men’s NCAA DII National Coaches’ Poll, released on Wednesday, Nov. 11.

9th annual play for Brian to be held Friday Alex Sklar Guest Writer aws150@lhup.edu

The ninth annual Play For Brian will be held on Friday, Nov. 20 at 7:45p.m. in the Student Rec center.

Each team can have six to eight players and can participate in a dodgeball tournament, walleyball tournament, wheelchair races, rock climbing and silent auctions where you can win tickets to sporting events and win sporting memorabilia. The winner of each event will receive a Play For Brian T-shirt.

The cost is only $10 per person! You can get forms located in the Rec Center or talk to Professor Bridget Roun in her office in 113 Zimmerli. Free food and beverages will be provided at the Rec Center for the duration of the night.

The event is a benefit for Lock Haven graduate, Brian Keefer, and this year the event will benefit Justin Kline, too. All proceeds from Play For Brian will be split between Justin and Brian.

On July 1, 2008 Brian Keefer was involved in a life altering gymnastic accident. Brian attempted to do a triple flip. When landing, his head went through the foam landing area and hit the bottom of the pit.

The impact forced his C-4 vertebra to slip slightly over the C-5 vertebra.

While his spinal cord is intact, the accident has left him a quadriplegic.

Brian has achieved incredible progress through therapy and rehabilitation and remains hopeful that improvement will continue.

Unfortunately, medical expenses are overwhelming and a long road still awaits him and his family. Brian returned to Lock Haven where he continued his education and graduated on May, 2012 with a BS in Therapeutic Recreation.

On Sun., June 28, 2015, Justin Kline was flown by LifeFlight to Geisinger Medical Center. The following morning, the medical staff informed Justin that his spleen had ruptured due to an extremely high level of leukocytes most likely caused by Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL).

Since June 28, Justin has remained in the care of Geisinger Medical Center in Danville. Recently, he was life-flighted to Geisinger due to blood clots in his lungs.

Although he has made tremendous progress, this is a reminder of the severity of his disease and the long battle ahead of him.

Justin has spent the last decade of his life dedicated to volunteer work.

He has played an integral role in the recent success of Keystone Little League as well as serving as a volunteer coach for the Central Mountain High School Legion Baseball teams.

Many of you also know Justin as “Mayor� as he has served in that capacity for the borough of Beech Creek for the last few years. Justin also recently joined the Grange Fair Board, again in a volunteer role.

Vulcan victory: Football closes season with loss to Cal (Pa.) Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu First year head coach Dave Taynor lead an offensive resurgence in his first season at the helm of the Lock Haven football team, but, for the second consecutive season, the team finished with a record of 2-9.

The Bald Eagles welcomed the California (Pa.) Vulcans to a chilly Hubert Jack Stadium on this past Saturday, Nov. 14. The Vulcans returned home with a sound 56-24 victory over LHU. After winning the coin toss and electing to receive, redshirt-junior quarterback Caleb Walton lead Lock Haven into the redzone and the offense ended up settling for a 22-yard field goal from senior Alex Boumerhi. The score marked the sixth time this season that Lock Haven got points from their opening offensive possession.

Cal (Pa.) answered with a 10-play, 60-yard touchdown drive that was capped by a 5-yard TD run. The following possession for each team ended in a touchdown to concluded the first quarter scoring with Cal (Pa.) ahead, 14-10.

Cal (Pa.) quarterback James Harris connected with WR Garry Brown for one of his five touchdown passes to open the scoring in the second quarter.

Following another Vulcan touchdown, Walton and receiver Shawn Seif found paydirt to draw Lock Haven within 11 with 1:40 left to go in the first half. However, Cal (Pa.) marched right down the field in six plays for 86 yards to go up 35-17 at the half.

That score, paired with their 87-yard touchdown to begin the second half, produced an insurmountable gap for the Bald Eagles. Cal (Pa.) managed to push a 28-17 game to 42-17 without Lock Haven gaining a full possession.

The Vulcans ended up finding the endzone twice more while Lock Haven also scored an additional touchdown which gave the Vulcans the 56-24 victory over LHU. Walton, on the season, passed for 2,541 yards which is good enough

for fourth-most in a single season. He also became the second Lock Haven quarterback to pass for 2,000 yards in two different seasons. The Walton-lead offense also finished set a single-season record for total yards (4,603).

His battery-mate Luke Erdman, who was one of 15 seniors honored before the game, started his 41st consecutive game. Erdman started every game since week four of the 2012 season and been nominated for the 2015 Gene Upshaw Division II Lineman of the Year Award.

Fellow senior Tony Ballon had a team-high 10 tackles and finished with the season with 109 tackles, the most for a Lock Haven defender in a singleseason since 2002.

The offense is set to return several key pieces on offense next season in the form of their leading rusher and four of their top five receivers. On defense, three of the top four tacklers from the 2015 season are due to return.

Wrestling defeats Hofstra, begins season 1-3 Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University Division I wrestling team officially started the 2015-16 dual season with four matches in a three-day span.

The Bald Eagles traveled to play the always tough Nittany Lions of Penn State University. Penn State, who is currently ranked No. 1 in the NCAA rankings, cruised to a season opening victory with a 50-0 shutout against the Bald Eagles.

Redshirt-senior Dan Neff and junior Brad Emerick had solid performances at Penn State’s Rec Hall. Neff, a returning All-American, fell 3-1 to No. 2 Jimmy Gulibon, who is also a returning All-American. Brad Emerick came close in a 3-2 decision to Penn State football star Dan Johnson, who received the biggest ovation of the night.

The Bald Eagles later traveled to Troy, N.Y. for the Northeast Duals at Hudson Valley Community College. Lock Haven had three matches that day against No. 10 Nebraska, Hofstra and Buffalo University. The Division I squad started against the NCAA powerhouse Nebraska Cornhuskers, who are currently ranked No. 10 in the NCAA pole. The Bald Eagles got shutout for the second straight match, 41-0. Later, Lock Haven rebounded in an impressive 24-12 victory against Hofstra University. Lock Haven won six of 10 bouts in the victory. Lock Haven ended the weekend with a tough loss to Buffalo University, 17-16. Both Buffalo and Lock Haven won five bouts, but two major decision victories proved to be the difference.

In the Northeast Duals, 197-pounder Phil Sprenkle went 2-1 for the day, only losing to No. 9 Aaron Studebaker of Nebraska. Lock Haven also got victories from No. 12 Neff, Aaron McKinney and Tyler Wood. Neff suffered two tough losses to No.

7 Anthony Abidin of Nebraska and No. 15 Jamel Hudson of Hofstra. McKinney also lost two bouts to Tyler Berger of Nebraska and Jahlanie Callender of Hofstra. Wood lost to Frank Affronti of Hofstra.

Jake Field went 2-0 on Sunday with wins against Bryan Damon of Hofstra and Kyle Akins of Buffalo.

The Lock Haven University wrestling team will hit the home mat for the first time this weekend.

The Bald Eagles will host a tri-match with Division II Shippensburg and the Boilermakers of Purdue University. Purdue and Shippensburg will face each other for the first time ever at 11 a.m. at the Thomas Fieldhouse.

The Haven will square off with Purdue at 12:30p.m. and Shippensburg at 2:00p.m. The wrestling team will also host the Mat Town Open Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Thomas Fieldhouse.

The tournament is open to all collegiate wrestlers and non-collegiate wrestlers.
