Meghan Mausteller Guest Writer mlm6713@lhup.edu Increasing college access for Pennsylvania students has become a hot topic between Gov. Tom Corbett and his opposing candidate, Tom Wolf, for the upcoming gubernatorial election.

Both candidates have distinct plans to help more Pennsylvanians attend college.

In his most recent budget, Corbett has set aside $5 million for his Ready to Succeed Scholarship Initiative. This program can provide up to $2,000 for middle-class students whose parents earn less than $110,000 a year.

In order to qualify for this scholarship for their subsequent sophomore, junior and senior years, students must demonstrate post-secondary merit by achieving a minimum 3.25 grade point average.

This scholarship is an attempt to give students who do not qualify for state grants an opportunity to decrease their need for college loans.

According to the Pennsylvania bett said, “This scholarship program will help to reduce the debt burden that many post-secondary education students across the commonwealth have upon graduation.”

Wolf also has plans to make college more affordable for students.

According to his website, Tom Wolf for Governor, Wolf has planned a Deserving Scholar Program, which top twenty percent of SAT test-takers with at least a 3.75 GPA in high school.

Eligible students must also be in the bottom quartile of income distribution. would receive extra help during the college application process. They would receive information on state schools, as well as how to apply for cation process. This would include 6 waivers to allow students apply to state owned and state regulated colleges and universities for free.

secondary education history major, is a member of the Lock Haven College Republicans. “I appreciate the necessary requirements to receive Corbett’s Ready to Succeed Scholarship,” said Protsko.

“The GPA requirement ensures that the money is going to people who achieve academically and the maximum family income requirement makes sure that people who need the money are getting it.”

Hannah Wilkinson, a junior economics and Spanish major, disagrees. “Although Corbett’s scholarship gives money to students, the information students would receive under Wolf’s Deserving Scholar Proly the waiver system.

Applying to college can be expensive and the waivers make sure that need have the opportunity to apply to the best schools for them.”

With elections just around the corner, voting students like Protsko and Wilkinson are making decisions that will affect not only themselves, but future college students as well.

Students had a memorable homecoming week this year, featuring fun events and triumphs for the football team, but it will be especially unforgettable for two students who were crowned during Saturday’s game.

Rebecca Shortes and Godfred Anyang were just two of several hopefuls for the 2014 Homecoming King and Queen positions. Though Shortes and Anyang were crowned together, they were not running mates and didn’t know each other prior to homecoming week. Anyang was unavailable for comment at the time of the interview.

Originally, Shortes was running with her friend Joe Eveland. The pair used candy to campaign, using phrases like “Be a ‘Smarties’ Pants” while handing out lollipops and smarties.

For Shortes, a senior majoring in health and physical education, being crowned homecoming queen was made sweeter by previous experience.

“I was runner up for Homecoming Queen in high school and I enjoyed all of the events and activities that were involved and wanted to get involved with Homecoming in college,” said Shortes.

Shortes was crowned during halftime, after surviving several rounds of voting by her classmates and peers. Her family, which included her parents, siblings, grandparents and others, were present to witness the exciting moment.

After the coronation, LHU went on to win the game, making it their second consecutive win of the season.

“It felt like a double win when the football team won. It was a well deserved win over Millersville University, which is from my hometown of Lancaster,” said Shortes.

Over the course of the week, Shortes had many opportunities to interact with both the student body and her running mates through the activities organized by the Haven Activities Council.

I had a chance to meet with other students that I didn’t know before and form a stronger friendship with others on the court.”

Freshman PASSHE students may not have as much to worry about when it comes to standardized test scores on application essays in the upcoming years.

High school students study for standardized tests as if it is the only factor that colleges look at on student applications. Most of these students try to shoot for at least a 1500 on their SAT’s or a 20 to 21 on their ACT’s, scores that Princeton Review has determined to be the national average.

Princeton Review says, “Scores below an 1100 on the SAT or a 15 on ACT are considered low at just about any fouryear college. You can overcome low scores with good grades or an outstanding application. But even if you’re accepted by a fouryear college, the school may advise or require you to take some remedial courses as a freshman.”

For this reason, high school students attempt higher scores, hoping for an acceptance to the college of their choice. What most students don’t know is that colleges don’t judge applicants solely based on standardized testing scores, but instead on grades, participation in extracurricular activities and occasionally, admission essays.

Lock Haven University releases its average acceptance rate in SAT scores each year.

In 2002, the average SAT score for an accepted students was a mean of 481 in Verbal and Critical Reasoning and 482 in math, averaging to 963. This is over 500 points below what the Princeton Review determines an average score.

By 2013, Lock Haven’s SAT acceptance scores were even

lower, with a mean of 472 in Verbal and Critical Reasoning and 480 in math. While the 11% difference, may seem small, Lock Haven isn’t the only school who is transitioning to relaxed SAT scores.

Clarion University, another PASSHE school, also released their SAT scores for 2013, with a Verbal and Critical Reasoning score of 466.93 and a Math score of 472, even lower than the average scores for Lock Haven.

In 2005, Clarion accepted a 494 average in Verbal and Critical Reasoning and a 487 average in math, a much larger decrease in scores than Lock Haven.

The number of test optional colleges began to grow after the most recent rendition of the SAT’s in 2005.

What does this mean for high school students trying to achieve acceptance to institutions like Lock Haven University? Campuses may become more diverse, offering new opportunities for students who may not have done well on the SAT’s, or perhaps, nothing will change.

Only time will tell.

Kathleen Ellison Online Edition kae742@lhup.edu I’ve already written about the “Book of Life” and all the amazing things in it that I was really excited about, and let me tell you, this movie did not disappoint.

In this Hispanic movie about the Day of the Dead, Manolo (played by friend Joaquin (played by Channing Tatum) for the hand of the beautiful Maria (played by Zoe Saldana). But when family duties and destiny get in the way, he ends up traveling on a wild adventure through the afterlife.

This movie was perfection! The artwork was incredible, and the trailer simply did not do it justice. The unique puppetry art style and vibrant colors created a world

but it was so good in it’s theatrical entirety that it really must be restated. The music was so uplifting and conveyed the themes and characters in a way that didn’t detract from the movie or seem too strange in its suddenness -- like so many Disney movies sometimes do.

The characters were incredibly well written and I have to say this movie really took some hits at gender roles and stereotypes. Not only was Maria feisty and independent, but never once did she become a damsel in distress.

Manolo and Joaquin both demolished the ideals of being manly man, in a heart wrenching plot that explored following your heart.

Speaking of plot, this movie’s plot was non stop action that explored themes of humanity in a simplistic and artful way.

The darker or more intense moments were easily alleviated by humor. And the humor was abundant, but it never got to the point where it was too slapstick or over the top.

University Players prepare for Ken Ludwig’s “Lend Me A Tenor” Kyra Smith-Cullen Editor in Chief ksmithcu@lhup.edu For their mainstage production this semester, the University Players will be performing Ken Ludwig’s acclaimed play ‘Lend Me A Tenor’.

Shows will start on Thursday, Nov. 6 in Sloan.

‘Lend Me A Tenor’ is a farce that follows the madcap night of Saunders, the general manager of an opera company, as he prepares to welcome Tito Merelli, the greatest tenor of his generation. Through an unusual series of events, Saunders is forced to replace Merelli and hilarity ensues when the real opera star arrives.

Farces require a faster pace with more physicality and that requires the cast to be quick with the delivery of their lines and actions. The entire play takes place on one set that is separated into two sections.

“I actually came into this semester not intending to direct the play. I had wanted to be in it,” said Christopher Rex, who is a senior majoring in English and the director. “When students returned in the fall, we found out that

no full time or part time theatre faculty member had been hired to direct.

Ramona Broomer, who makes up the entirety of LHU’s theatre faculty, approached me about co-directing the play due to my previous directing experience.”

The University Player’s production of it features the talents of campus thespians. The cast includes students

Gavin D’Ulisse, Kailyn Mayshock, Austin Miller, Melanie Geer, Blair Allen, Angelica Emel, Cassandra Irvin and Matthew McLaughlin. The direc-

tors are Rex and Professor Ramona Broomer.

Rehearsals for the show started in the middle of September, following two nights of auditions.

“The production in general has been great, since I’ve never gotten to do a farce before, and getting to work with my cast mates and director,” said Mayshock, a senior majoring in interdisciplinary studies with concentrations in theatre and dance. There is an easy way to make these eyes come to life for Halloween.

When your paper towel and toilet paper rolls are empty, save them. Using just a paper towel or toilet paper roll, cut shapes that look like eyes into the rolls. Then you take glow sticks and lay them inside the cut-up rolls.

That’s how easy it is. You can then place them in your roommate’s room when they are not home and scare them!

Jennie Slota Staff Writer jslota@lhup.edu Students at Lock Haven University share how they remember Halloween as a child and how they never grew out of some of the traditional routines the holiday brought as they grow older.

On October 31st, the eve of All Saints Day, Halloween is celebrated all over the world by dressing up and soliciting candy and treats to neighborhood children . Children princess, or vampires. Other traditions include bobbing for apples with their friends and family, trick-or treating, and eating so much candy that your stomach hurts.

“When I was younger we would trick or treat with friends and it was exciting because i’d have enough candy to last for months,” said Tommi Narunsky a junior recreation management major.

Although people get older and their lives get busier, the holidays tradition is certainly still alive among students at LHU. Senior Wali Hepburn a communication major said as a he got to college he see’s that the students still dress up and have a good time with their friends.

“College students still look forward to dressing up and having a good time on Halloween. Over time the traditions are still pretty much the same. Trick or treating is not a huge deal anymore to the students, but they like to

get more and more creative with their costume ideas and celebrate with friends,” Hepburn said.

Even though students grew out of the trick or treating aspect of Halloween, they still certainly remember the fun times they had in their younger years.

“I’ll always remember when I was six we went trick or treating in our local neighborhood. One of my neighbors had a haunted house for the community, i was too scared to go in but my sister did and she lost her shoe somewhere in the madness. We couldn’t stop laughing when she came out,” said junior Amanda Le a Pre PA major. “my best memory from Halloween when i was younger was dressing up and running around town with friends and visiting my grandmother. Now that I am older i like to stay in make popcorn and watch scary movies with my friends.” said Brianna Fida a senior psychology major. “ I’ll always remember the hospitality Halloween brought as a child. My mom would dress me up like Scooby Doo and take me all over. People always would greet us and talk to us. We would go from door to door collecting candy,” said sophomore Martin Valle a criminal justice major.

Halloween superstitions explained Kate Hibbard Managing Editor khibbard@lhup.edu All Hallow’s Eve, or Halloween, was gradually integrated into American culture through Irish and Scottish immigrants’ celebrations in the 1800s. Over the past 200 years, Halloween has evolved into the costume-covered, candygrabbin’ holiday we’ve come to know and love today.

Though the holiday is ever-changing, some common superstitions have withstood the test of time and are still held by many today.

Here are some popular superstitions accordBlack Cats – Black cats bring bad luck when they cross someone’s path. If one were to hurt a black cat on Halloween, he/she could have seven years of bad luck. Also, if a black

cat meows on your porch or near your window, it could signify an upcoming death in your family.

Cemeteries – It’s said that, if you hold your breath while driving by a cemetery, evil spirits won’t be able to enter your body. Some also believe that turning your pockets old when you pass a graveyard will ensure you don’t bring home a ghost in your pocket.

Jack-o-Lanterns – Burning a candle inside a jack-o-lantern on Halloween is supposed to keep evil spirits and demons at bay. This comes from the legend of Jack who ran into the devil one night and tricked him into trapping himself in a tree. The devil threw an ember from the depths of Hell at Jack in anger and Jack stored the ember in a carved-out turnip.

Spiders – Apparently, if you see a spider on Halloween night, it means that the spirit of a dead loved one is watching over you.

The next meeting will be held on Nov. 5th About Actively Moving Forward: Actively Moving Forward (AMF) provides peer-led grief support for students on campus who have suffered the loss or illness of a loved one. The group meets every other week for peer-led support group meetings, as a safe environment for students to talk to each other, get their feelings out and cry in a non-judgmental and About 1 in 3 college-aged students suffer from some sort of loss. Losses, whether of a family member or friend, can have an impact on a student physically, emotionally and on their grades and social lives. Everyone handles grief differently, and this led Emily Nehme to start a chapter for AMF on campus.

Tolling Bells – If you ring bells on Halloween, they will chase away evil spirits.

Witches – According to myth, putting your clothes on inside out and walking backwards on Halloween night will allow you to meet a witch.

Some superstitions are not so widely held, but are interesting nonetheless.

One belief says that person born on Halloween is completely protected from evil spirits, and may even have the ability to see and converse with ghosts.

Another says that putting a silver sixpence and a sprig of rosemary under your pillow on Halloween night will allow you to dream of your future significant other.

After suffering a loss last semester, Nehme felt alone and as if no one close to her knew how to console her. In the months following, she started to look into starting a chapter of AMF at Lock Haven to help bring together students also suffering loss so they could support each other. AMF is currently in the process of becoming By national standards, the group is also required to hold one service event per semester. This event can be nearly anything, as long something to the members. These events are also a great way for friends to help support members of AMF even if they are not dealing with a loss. This semester, AMF will be taking part in the AIDS Walk hosted by Phi Sigma Pi on Saturday November 22nd.

Students are not required to talk at support meetings, but just sitting and listening can be a form of support for other students. It’s not uncommon to see a woman stripped down in advertisements regardless of what they’re selling—everything from fast food to perfumes seem to warrant a half-naked woman. This kind of sexualization is demeaning because it’s not a woman owning her own body. It’s male executives selling to the male gaze and it is practiced frequently throughout Hollywood.

In the fashion industry, it has become harder to get modeling jobs without succumbing to these degrading practices. If you watch any seayoung girls that they have to do whatever they’re told if they want to make it. They’re taught that the creepy photographer is always right

and if you want to model then you’ll just have to be a puppet for these corporations.

Famous celebrity photographer Terry Richardson has recently come has acted behind the camera. One model, Jamie Peck stated when she went to do a shoot for him, Richardson requested she call him “Uncle Terry.” He then proceeded to get naked while photographing her, which later turned into a sexual request on the grounds that he would help move her career forward.

What up-and-coming women in the fashion industry and Hollywood have to deal with that men don’t is the idea that if they don’t do what these powerful male executives say then it will destroy their careers.

Singer Kesha also recently came forward about her harmful relationship with popular music producer Lukasz Gottwald (more commonly known as Dr. Luke). According to Kesha, Gottwald raped her on multiple occasions and threatened that if she said anything, he would destroy her career.

This type of behavior throughout this industry leads to the detrimental stereotype that women have to sleep their way to the top. When a woman is in a place of power, you’ll often hear it asked who she had to have sex with to get to that point. The more realistic question is who she silently suffered to please so she could have a chance at a career.

Professors have one job to do and that is to teach their students the material in the course for which they signed up for.

However, some professors cancel class, end class early or even start late. Ending class early isn’t a bad thing; in fact most students love being able to leave class early. The problem lies with canceling classes and starting class late.

When it comes down to it, students pay tuition which can be broken down into an amount a student pays for each class they attend throughout the semester. If a professor starts a class late, they come off as unprepared and even that they don’t want to be there. Those few minutes when a professor is setting up or walking in late is time that we as students have already paid for.

The same can be said for canceled classes that we don’t make up. We already paid for that class to happen and when a professor cancels class for a day they are taking away from our education.

They are supposed to teach us—that is their obligation during the school year— but some still take that business trip or out-of-town meeting during our paid class time, forcing us to have class canceled.

Things happen. Things come up and

sometimes professors have no choice but to cancel class. What bothers me the most is that professors will take attendance or say you need an excused absence note if you as the student miss class. This makes no sense to me. As students paying for the classes, we still need to give the professor a doctor’s note. That’s nuts! Students pay for their classes and if they don’t show up to class they are ripping themselves off, cheating themselves out of money and that is their own problem. Professors can cancel class and we are stuck paying for a class period that never happened.

It would be fair to hold professors and students on the same level. Professors are getting paid so they should have to teach the classes in which they are assigned and if they need to miss a class for an emergency so be it, but if they need to miss for an out-of-town meeting or something other than an emergency they should have to come to class and teach still; it’s only fair to us students.

Students shouldn’t be penalized for missing a class they already paid for, but instead should be reimbursed for the class time that professors took away from them. Professors often say come to class because it will help you to be here. If it helps us then why do professors get to cancel classes? It doesn’t help students if there is no class.

Football wins second straight

Caleb Walton gashed the Millersville defense on a 37 yard run on Lock Haven’s third play from scrimmage.

Things were looking good then. Things were looking bright.

Lock Haven (2-6, 2-5 PSAC) took the ball down as far as the Millersville (08, 0-7 PSAC) 27 yard line, before being moved back 10 yards due to a holding penalty, and then Lock Haven was forced to punt.

Haven got the ball back and ran a questionable reverse call on third down and lost ten yards, and so Lock Haven had to punt.

Thankfully, the Lock Haven defense turned in its second straight stellar performance, as they held Millersville again, and the Eagles went onto win 17-10.

Lady Eagles fall to Pitts-Johnstown, 3-1 Men’s Soccer downed by #8 Mercyhurst Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University volleyball team (16-10, 10-8 PSAC) fell to the University of Pitt-Johnstown (1411, 10-8 PSAC), 3-1 (25-23, 14-25, 2125, & 16-25) on the road in conference action.

The Lady Eagles battled to win were unable to halt the Mountain Cats attack as UPJ won the next three sets to seal an, 3-1 (25-23, 14-25, 21-25, & 16-25) win.

Cody Anderson (Johnsonburg, Pa./ Johnsonburg) led The Haven attack with a match-high 14 kills and added four digs.

Toryn Quivers (Mercersburg, Pa./ James Buchanan) and freshman Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll) delivered a strong outing with eight kills, respectively. Quivers recorded a .429 hitting-percentage off 14 total attacks.

Gomish added eight digs and two

aces in the loss.

Jessica Brown (Fawn Grove, Pa./ Kennard-Dale) continued to have a consistent junior campaign dishingout a match-high 31 assists and a team-high 25 digs.

Sydney Belcastro (Pittsburgh, Pa./ Hopewell) was right behind Brown with 22 digs.

LHU served up six aces against the Mountain Cats.

Kendall Mahony led UPJ with 13 kills and Devan Orr recorded 34 digs.

The Lady Eagles return to action Friday, Oct. 31 when LHU hosts West Chester in conference action on the PSECU court (7 pm).

It was his seventh goal of the season and came off an assist from Tyler Sablyak (Doylestown, Pa./Central Bucks West).

Jonathan Howitt (Painted Post, N.Y./Corning Painted Post East) made three saves in the loss.

Vanhorne put Mercyhurst up 1-0 just 2:46 into the match and he scored again in the 20th and 22nd minute to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Amspacher’s goal made it 3-1 at the break.

The Lakers scored twice in the second half.

Hepburn gives Lock Haven new life

When somebody enters Thomas Fieldhouse on the evening of a basketball game, the initial feeling is something different than it was ten years ago.

There are plenty of reasons for the new feeling, including a winning program, a motivated fan base and attention from across the country. Of course, none of that happens without the 12th-leading scorer in the NCAA. Wali Hepburn, a 6-foot-4 senior guard out of Neumann Goretti high school, has been a dominant force on the Bald Eagle squad and last year averaged 21.9 points per game, putting him at No. 12 in at least 10 years that Lock Haven University has had a top-20 scorer on the roster and it has revitalized the program on several levels.

“It feels pretty good because coach Nestor and Lock Haven gave me a second chance to play college basketball and for me to be able to succeed and give some exposure to a program who has been struggling for a long time really makes it pretty cool,” Hepburn said of his experience as the face of the Bald Eagle team, “I feel like I owe it to my coach and school.”

Lock Haven University men’s basketball coach, Michael Nestor stated via e-mail, “Wali has been instrumental in changing the culture of this program.

He has proven with hard work and a great attitude you can accomplish great things.”

Hepburn led the Bald Eagles to a 17-10 record last season with notable wins against the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown and then 3rd-ranked East Stroudsburg University. Lock Haven’s performance during the regular season was good enough to push the Bald Eagles into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs, where they were unfortunately knocked-off by Millersville Uni-

Along with leading his team to considerable success last season, Hepburn has also been racking up some accolades of his own including First Team All-Region honors, NABC First Team All-District, All-American honors, and a spot on this year’s Preseason Super 16 Selection.

Bo Wallace certainly did not perform at his highest level going 14/33 on pass attempts with a touchdown and interception. On the opposing sideline, LSU QB, Anthony Jennings was asked to be a game manager and did just that.

Jennings was 8/16 with a touchdown and two interceptions. Les Miles instead rode the consensus number one recruit heading into this season, Leonard Fournette. Fournette ended his day rushing at 4.9 yards/carry clip on 23 attempts days as the Tigers rushed for 264 yards on 55 attempts (4.8 yards/carry average).

The unranked Nittany Lions of Penn State nearly took down their bitter rival in No. 13 Ohio State in another heart-pounding game that took two overtimes to decide a winner. In the end, Ohio State pulled out the victory 31-24. tion to tie the game at 17.

Ohio State also scored a touchdown in the second overtime. Penn State’s possession and the game ended on a fourth down sack. OSU QB J.T, Barrett passed 19 times while running 20 times and accounted 75 yards rushing and 74 yards passing. The achilles heel proved to be the running game for Penn State again as the team rushed 31 times for a mere 16 yards.

In the most absurd game of the week, No. 10 TCU utterly destroyed Texas Tech with their 82-27 victory. The Horned Frogs scored 31 alone in the third quarter which would have been enough to earn the victory. Trevone Boykin threw for 433 yards and seven touchdowns for TCU in the domination. TCU

amassed 785 yards of offense and 13 players hauled in a reception from Boykin.

Elsewhere in the college football landscape, No. 6 Oregon handled sliding downs and a QBR of 89.1 (with 100 being the best possible rating). Mariota’s season statistics through eight games are as follows: 2,283 yards, 24 touchdowns, 1 interception and a 68.8 completion percentage. It’s easy to see why this guy is at the top of many Heisman trophy lists.

No. 1 Mississippi State and No. 4 Alabama each won their contests by 14 points to keep their hopes of getting into the college football playoff alive. Mississippi State is now 7-0 while Alabama is 7-1.

No. 19 Utah continues to have a silent, but very solid season as they pushed their record to 6-1 with their 24-21 victory over No. 20 USC who slipped to 5-3.

Utah has an opportunity to make their case to be in the college football playoff conversation. They have already defeated two ranked teams and still have No. 14 Arizona State, No. 5 Oregon and No. 12 Arizona still on their schedule. Utah is a sleeper team to keep an eye on the rest of this season.

The biggest matchup for this upcoming Saturday is easily No. 4 Auburn traveling to No. 3 Ole Miss. Each program has one loss this season and this game could make or break their season.

Oregon welcomes unranked Stanford to Autzen stadium and despite Stanford’s ranking, the Cardinal will undoubtedly play Oregon tough. Stanford is a very physical team that presents problems for the speed oriented Oregon.

Stanford also won the last two meetings between the two.
