Commissioner Joel Long came in fourth and lost his place as third-term commissioner.

Unofficial results show that Bill Baney will most likely be the next mayor of Lock Haven. Rick Conklin came in a close second and the unofficial tally shows that Baney and Conklin were separated by only 14 votes. The unofficial results for City Council show Democrat and LHU student, Sara Stringfellow, Republican Douglas T. Byerly and Bill Baney as probable winners. Baney defended his council seat while running for mayor.

Democrat Kerry Stover won against his opponent Ed Higgins yesterday for the seat of Clinton County Sheriff and Jennifer Hoy (R), who faced strong competition from her opponent Democrat Jason Walker, was elected to her first four-year term as Clinton County register and recorder.

Democrat Dave Strouse, a local attorney, defeated his Republican opponent, Frederick Lingle, in the race for district attorney. According to The Lock Haven Express,

the unofficial vote count showed Strouse with 4,334 votes and Lingle with 2,978.

Three Supreme Court positions were also up for grabs Tuesday night. Voters have elected Democrats to all three state Supreme Court positions, giving Democrats the majority of 5 to 2. The Washington Post called the results “one of the biggest court shake-ups in recent history.” The justices elected, Philadelphia Judge Kevin Dougherty and Superior Court judges, David Wecht and Christine Donohue, will not be up for re-election for 10 years.

Republicans control both chambers of the Pennsylvania General Assembly as well as 13 of the state’s 18 congressional seats. According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Tuesday’s election might indicate that Democrats will take back the majority of U.S. congressional seats in next year’s elections.

Gov. Tom Wolf, in a written statement Tuesday, said the judicial results sent a clear message: “For the second time in the last year, the people of Pennsylvania have spoken at the ballot box and sent Harrisburg a message that they want fairness and change,” he said. “I hope those serving in state government have heard the message and will join me in fighting for change that benefits every Pennsylvanian.”

According to the US Census Bureau, young adult voters between the ages of 18 through 24 have voted at consistently lower rates than other age groups in every presidential election since 1962. The US Census Bureau’s voting data also shows that, on average, less than half of eligible young adult voters will actually make it to the polls for a national presidential election.

If they can find a way to connect, the student demographic presents an opportunity for politicians. Millennials are the largest and most racially diverse generation in the country’s history, making their vote valuable. By 2016, millennials will make up a third of the electorate according to Pew Research Center. Students are highly encouraged to register before the presidential primaries. The Democratic primary has been approved to take place on Feb. 1. The Republican primary will take place on April 26.

Sigma Kappa raises awareness for Alzheimer’s research Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu During the whole month of November, it is Alzheimer’s awareness month and Sigma Kappa, one of the sororities on campus, is bringing awareness to it by holding a few events this month.

According to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, it is estimated that about 5.1 million Americans may have Alzheimer’s. Also about half a million Americans whom are younger than 65 years old develop some form of dementia, including Alzheimer’s which is referred to as early onset.

Back in 1954, Sigma Kappa became the first sorority to recognize that Alzheimer’s is a growing epidemic and needs continued comprehensive

work and realization of the needs of the elderly population. In realizing this, Sigma Kappa added emphasis to Alzheimer’s disease to their gerontology program. The Sigma Kappa Foundation has raised more than $1 million in research and psychosocial grants to practitioners who have been working hard to fight this disease.

Some of Sigma Kappa’s philanthropic projects include Inherit the Earth, which is a national service project that provides collegians, alumnae and citizens the opportunity to work together to improve their local environments. Maine Sea Coast Mission which was the first national philanthropy to provide the mission with funds to support their Christmas program, emergency relief program and scholarships.

Holly Symoksky, a senior studying psychology and the Vice President of Membership and PR Chairman for Sigma Kappa, said “The Ultra Violet Campaign is a fund raising event that provides Sigma Kappa’s chapters with opportunities to raise funds and awareness for Sigma Kappa’s philanthropic priorities.”

Sigma Kappa’s Ultra Violet event is Turkey Bingo, on Wednesday Nov. 18 at 7 P.M. in Rogers Gym. Admission will be $3 and all of the proceeds will be donated to the Sigma Kappa foundation to help with Alzheimer’s Disease research. Next phase in construction are renovations to the PUB Sean Dougherty Guest Writer sxd1498@lhup.edu The Parson Union Building is the next phase in the construction on campus, including a new entrance, more rooms being added, new furniture, flooring and more.

There have been many changes on campus during the 2015/2016 school year: Russell Hall being torn down, Ulmer Hall being updated, new pavilions in place of Russell hall, the food business, Chick-fil-A in Lower Bentley and closing down the Eagle Wing Cafe.

Back in September, a firm hired by LHU conducted a face-to-face survey with students asking them what different changes they would

like to see in the PUB. The survey was conducted in one day and about 700 students responded.

Dr. Dwayne Allison, the associate provost for student affairs, said, “The information gathered from the survey was then given to the director of student activities, Jodi Smith, and myself, to judge whether the improvement would be applied to the building.”

During a recent interview in a communication class with the President of LHU, Dr. Fiorentino said “We will be doing renovations to the PUB because it is long over-due and my opinion is that students deserve a better facility than what we have now.”

There were many different options presented by students and these are the major ones to look forward too:

· The entrance to the PUB behind Ulmer will be updated and have a more appealing look. · The information center will be expanded and feature more food options for students to purchase. · The bookstore entrance will also be updated to make access from the parking lot easier on guest and students · More rooms will be added with the option for students to rent out for events and for a quiet place for them or a group to study in. · New furniture and flooring on both the upstairs and downstairs sections of the building will be in place.

The renovations to the pub are expected to begin in the summer of 2016.

Employee informed female that she could not refill the cup since it was not purchased with the meal.

10/28/15 McEntire Hall Officer was performing a followup on a previous incident and found individuals within room vaping/smoking. Officer informed student this in not permitted and this incident would be referred to Student Life.

10/28/15 N Fairview Street Officer observed a vehicle without headlamps or tail lamps illuminating. Officer stopped vehicle and gave driver a verbal warning.

5 10/28/15 North Hall Officer observed a motor bike parked at the rear of the building at the bike rack. Officer made contact with owner and instructed him the motorbike needed to be registered with Public Safety. Upon entering the student’s room officer observed a huge cloud of smoke filling the room.

10/28/15 Thomas Field House Officer observed a male riding a two wheeled electric scooter on the gray floor inside building. Officer made contact with male and instructed him scooters are prohibited on campus property.

10/28/15 Off-Campus Assist LHPD with securing the scene. This officer along with Woodward Township officer taped off the property with Police tape.

Remained on scene until additional LH police units arrived.

10/29/15 Student Rec Center Employee overheard student state he was “packing” employee took this to mean student was carrying a weapon on campus. Officer made contact with student. Student does have a permitted to carry a concealed weapon and stated he does not carry the weapon on campus.

10/29/15 East Campus Report of a possible theft of a bike.

Individuals located by post office and officer made contact with one male in front of Beiters. Male stated the bike belonged to friend who was in Dollar store. Male exited Family Dollar and stated the bike did belong to him. Males were released.

10/30/15 McEntire Hall Report of an odor of marijuana.

Officers dispatched and could not detect any odor of marijuana.

Celebrating culture:

International student photography showcased in Bentley Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu Students opened a photography show with an international theme in the Lower Bentley Gallery on Monday Nov. 2.. The show will be open until Nov. 20. The exhibit is part of International Education Week sponsored by the Institute for International Studies, Phi Beta Delta International Honors Society and the Fine Arts Society.

There are over twenty submissions which features landscapes, city scenes, portraits and more. The show was juried by LHU alumni Kurt Herrmann.

Herrmann studied abroad in Russia and Spain during his time at LHU. Students will be familiar with Herrmann’s mural on the front of the Raub Building.

Students who came to the opening were encouraged to vote for “Viewer’s Choice”. The plentiful votes were counted and Yuqi Zhao, an art student, won with her photo “Feng Huang 2”. The photo shows a tight city street and the colorful glare of the lights that line it. The photo has an atmosphere of fantasy and mystery and was taken in low light.

The winner of first place was Jess Streeter, who showed the photograph “Bumps and Curves”. The photo shows an abstracted shape in black and white.

small imperfections which lend the object character and make the viewer feel they have been let in on a secret. The dark space looks from a distance to be a shadow but as the viewer moves closer it is revealed to be indented curves of the object.

The second place winner was Kristi Replogle. Her photo “BeeHive” shows a honeycombed, mirror-like structure reflecting green space. It is a compositionally interesting piece. The greens and blues allude to an open outdoor space though the sky can only be seen in the reflection. Like the first place submission, Replogle’s work shows an object that has been abstracted through the composition.

Emily Appolonia won third place for her portrait photo “Hidden 1”. The model is painted with bright hues and a direct light is cast over her face. Her confrontational gaze is engaging as she peers through her parted fingers.

Providing contrast, the dark background makes the subject more captivating.

‘Focus’ on Ariana Grande’s new single Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu It has been a little over a year since Ariana Grande released a new album but it stayed in the public’s eye with different projects, but last Friday she released her new single, “Focus.”

Grande has been teasing her fans since Sept. 15 when she announced the release date of her new single.

When it got closer to the release date, she started sharing snippets of the song and music video on her Instagram.

Let me say, it was worth the wait!

I feel that Grande’s songs, for the most part, are very different than what you normally hear on the radio. It is a very ‘groovy’ number with the same attitude that is portrayed in her song “Problem” that was released last year.

Personally, I love the song! It is very upbeat and a good song to dance to which gives me a little bit of confidence. The trumpet solo halfway through the song is a great touch and gives the song an older vibe, but doesn’t take away from its modern aspect.

The music video on the other hand to me was somewhat similar to her “Problem” music video. Not that

I didn’t enjoy it, I just wish she did something a little different and more creative. During the chorus, she and six of her backup dancers dance on a platform, similar to “Problem.” Hey, if that’s what she likes then keep doing what you’re doing! On the creative side, Grande did change her hair color for the video to a lavender/ platinum color which she pulled off really well. If the dying process weren’t so difficult, I would definitely be trying it out.

Being a dancer, I’ve always watched singers closely who dance in their videos and Ariana Grande is no exception. I have always been so impressed with the choreography in her videos and how awesome she does!

You can clearly tell she puts a lot of work into perfecting it.

There is one male on the track and fans were anxious to know who it was. On Oct. 30, Grande performed at the iHeartRadio Theater in Los Angeles and let everyone know that Jamie Foxx is the mystery vocals on her new track.

Overall, I really enjoyed her new single “Focus” and have not been let down by her yet. I look forward to her new album that is reportedly coming out early next year!

Revisit the beginning of the end

Michael Eubanks Staff Writer mae7020@lhup.edu The impending release of “Fallout 4” on Nov. 10 will likely provide fans of the series with many hours of postapocalyptic entertainment.

Modern PC and console gamers are likely familiar with the Bethesda software series and are based on the same engine that produced “Oblivion” on “Skyrim” from the “Elder Scrolls” series.

If the marketing releases are to be believed, “Fallout 4” is the developer’s most ambitious title yet. As the company is known for its large scale, open world games, this is an exciting prospect for “Fallout” fans.

Those who are looking for a diversion while awaiting the release may want to check out the first two titles in the series. While not originally developed by Bethesda, they currently hold the rights, and have once again released the titles.

This recommendation comes with a few caveats.

“Fallout” 1 and 2 are old games, and there age shows in

various aspects of their game play. The games were not cutting edge graphically, even upon original release, and the archaic UI can feel clunky at first. The original titles were also produced in the turn based in an isometric perspective that original developer Black Isle Studios was known for.

Adventurous gamers with a tolerance for the older style game will find a lot to like if they are willing to give it a chance, though. The original titles had a dark, campy humor that wasn’t afraid to take shots at the tropes within its own genre. They also had flexibility in both character development and gameplay that allowed for replay value.

Many challenges within the game could be overcome in multiple ways. The early titles boasted an engaging story and memorable characters in some ways, but the Bethesda titles have failed to replicate.

“Fallout 1” and “Fallout 2” are not for everyone. The control schemes are archaic and not always intuitive. The graphics have not aged well, and many of the systems, while similar on the surface, work differently than they do in the modern titles. But for those with a taste for nostalgia the titles are still worth checking out.

During the day, stop by and make a donation to an organization for Veterans or their families, and then, at night, sit and enjoy one of these five veteran films!

5. “American Sniper” Released this year, this film follows Navy S.E.A.L. sniper, Chris Kyle, as he uses his pinpoint accuracy to save countless lives on the battlefield, turning him into a legend. However after four services of duty what happens when he can’t seem to leave the war behind him?

This film is an in-depth tale of what soldiers can experience when they return home and how normal life is often difficult to return to. If you wanted to fully understand what our soldiers go through, this is the perfect film to watch for November.

4. “Black Hawk Down” Released in 2001, this film is about 123 elite U.S. soldiers who are dropped into Somalia to capture two top lieutenants of renegade warlord but end up in a desperate battle with a large force of heavily-armed Somalis.

This film is great for Veteran’s month because we get a clear depiction of the kinds of enemies our Veterans can face while they’re out on the battlefield.

Also, we get to see how a group of soldiers can try and figure a way out of an unexpected situation.

3. “We Were Soldiers” Released in 2002, Mel Gibson stars in this dramatic tale about the first major battle of the Vietnam War for the American Phase. We also get to see the story of the soldiers on both sides that fought it.

This film gives us a chance to go back in time to a war that had a major affect on all of us allowing us to understand the two different sides. It really gives us a deeper perspective on the horror that war can bring.

2. “Born on the Fourth of July” This film focuses on life of Ron Kovic, a Vietnam vet, who ended up paralyzed from the waist down.

Feeling betrayed by the country he fought for, he becomes a anti-war activist and a pro-human rights activist.

This is an emotional but truthful tale about how overlooked our veterans are. It shows the story from such a personal angle that it allows us to connect more to the character and his situation. It gets us thinking about other soldiers who might be in his shoes, and is perfect for November.

1. “Saving Private Ryan” This films follows a group U.S. soldiers after the Normandy Landings who go behind enemy lines to retrieve a paratrooper whose brothers were killed in action.

This is a moving tale about the importance of brotherhood and the extremes our soldiers will go to help each other out and really enhances the “No man left behind” policy. It also provides us with crystal clear battle scenes which help us feel as the character do.

Don’t worry, be happy: Stay positive for a positive life Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu Life gets the better of us sometimes and it feels like the world might crumble around us, but I can promise you it isn’t. Even when times are hard, there’s always a way to turn things around and find something positive to focus on. Never tell yourself that there’s nothing in this world for you because there is. You just have little blinders on that keep you from seeing the positive side and all the good things around you.

You just need to start some positive and healthy habits for a better outlook on life. These will relieve your mind of all the stress that’s weighing you down and making everything so hard to deal with.

Find an optimistic viewpoint When things are looking awful we tend to cling to the awful and ignore everything else. We’re natural drama queens like that. So try to find the positives in a situation. Is it a really hard practice? Then you’re going to get improve even more. Is it raining and you’re cold?

Rain is a beautiful form of nature. You can splash in puddles and there’s comfy clothes waiting for you in your warm room.

Create and live in a positive environment Make everyday a good day for you. Don’t surround yourself with negative people or negative situations. If the influences around you are negative, you will feel negative as well and ultimately you will not be happy. Letting go of negative friends is hard, especially if you’ve been friends for a long time but sometimes it’s necessary for your own mental health and well-being.

Take your time Don’t stress yourself out by trying to get too much done too quickly. It never ends well. You get stressed out and negativity builds up and once again, and you become unhappy. By going slow, you’re calming yourself down and your brain can catch up Don’t make a big deal out of something small Especially, as students, we feel overwhelmed with all of the work we have to do and then we start freaking out. Just stop for a minute. Take a breath and calm down. Make a list of everything you need to do and separate it according to what you will get done on each day. It’s okay. Most of the time what we have to do is a lot less than what we feel like we have to do. We just need to calm down long enough to reevaluate what’s going on and figure out how to get through it calmly. This goes for everything else in our life too. Just stop. Breath. Then refocus.

Don’t let fears control you Feel the fear and do it anyway. Don’t let anything control you or hold you back. If you let it, you’ll not only be filled with the negative emotion of fear and nightmare scenarios, but you’ll feel sad and regretful that you let it stop you from doing what you really want. Take control and push past the problem and fear.

Add value and positivity to someone else’s life Help other people by lending a hand or giving a ride. It’s the little things that matter the most in the end. You could also just be a listening ear to someone who needs it. In the end, you’re just trying to make other people happy because by making them happy, you tend to feel better about yourself and feel happy in return. Just give someone a smile. You don’t know who needs one.

Exercise regularly and sleep well Take care of your body and your body will feel one hundred percent better. If your body feels good, so will your mind. Even just drinking water regularly makes you feel better.

Learn to take criticism in a positive way We all get criticism and sometimes it really hurts but, if it’s honest criticism, it may be something you could benefit from. Honestly, listen to what the person said.

Don’t reply right away so you can take it in and think on it. Stay open minded instead of immediately being hurt by it. Once you’ve thought on it, you can either reply to it or let it go. Just keep a level mind about doing either one.

If something does hurt you, learn how to deal with it We all get hurt sometimes. We all feel down and sad. But we need to learn how to deal with the things that make us feel this way. Figure out a way to let it out, be it through exercise or writing or something else. Some of us just need to talk it out with a good friend.

Whatever you need to do to feel better.

Don’t let these feelings fester or they will hurt you even more in the long run.

Build your self esteem If you learn to love yourself, negativity will bounce off of you more often. Less will drag you down because you feel better about yourself and who you are. I can promise that you’re amazing in more ways than you give yourself credit for.

Go through your day in a mindful way Start your day calmly and with a plan so you don’t get lost and overwhelmed. Don’t dwell on the future or the past; focus on the now and the present. The past is over and the future isn’t here yet so go through life one day at a time and try to make every moment count. That line is used a lot but it’s true. Just look for good things all around you. Do you have a long walk home? Enjoy the fresh air and the crunchy fall leaves.

Focus on what’s around you rather than whatever is going on in your head.

Sometimes it’s hard to get through the days but if you let yourself dwell on the negatives then it will be really hard to be happy and you’ll always be bringing yourself down. These few things are hard at first, especially if you feel down all the time, but if you take them on one at a time and really try to make habits of them, you’ll be off to a healthy and positive start. Take everything one day at a time and always remember that you’re important.

Where in the World: Republic of Azerbaijan Raymond Stellhorn Columnist rjs2091@lhup.edu With International Education Week upon the United States, it is time to take a look at a region of the world that many Americans are not so familiar with. The Republic of Azerbaijan is a country located in the Caucasus region, essentially the gateway between Europe and Asia. The official language is Azerbaijani, though, English and Russian are commonly spoken.

This former member of the Soviet Union has rose out of the red ashes behind the iron curtain into a great new era. Azerbaijan has a strong western influence nowadays. However, it has always been ahead of the times for change compared to its neighboring countries in the region.

In 1918, it was the first Islamic democratic

state to become secular separating religion from government. Baku is the largest city and capital where 25 percent of approximately 10 million of all Azerbaijans live. Azerbaijan is currently in the midst of a renaissance as it was during the beginning of the twentieth century.

Most recently in June of this year, Baku hosted the Inaugural European Games, an international event similar to the Pan-American Games which only contested between countries within the European Olympic Committees.

Baku will also be hosting the 2016 European Grand Prix Race of the Formula 1 World Championship, the highest level of motorsport in the world.

Baku is known as the City of Winds for its location on the Caspian Sea. The city has become industrialized and has a modern skyline of tall glass skyscrapers.

Conversely, though, Baku has many historically preserved buildings including an

Opera and Palaces as well as “Icheri Sherher�, the old Baku. Azerbaijan, the Land of Fire as it is known through travel advertising is a beautiful country with a rich history that is on the rise to be a destination for those from all over the world.

Study Abroad Stories: Amsterdam, Holland Kayla Borges Guest Writer ksb6501@lhup.edu The city of Amsterdam is a place guaranteed to leave you with an experience of a lifetime. I made memories there that I will never forget. From the moment I arrived at the Schiphol Airport, I knew my time there would be amazing. It was the first airport where the customs officers were kind and welcoming. Rather than treating us as if we were annoying tourists, the Dutch officers wished my friend and I well and told us to have a great time.

At one point in time, the city was one of Europe’s most important trade ports. They are used to people of different cultures coming in and out of the city. Tourists and visitors are welcome in the city without hesitation, making the atmosphere a friendly, comfortable place to be.

Amsterdam is a breathtakingly beautiful city. Canals line the streets and bridges cross every canal. Boats provide transportation throughout the winding city. Bicycles also provide transportation around the city, in fact, they are the main mode of transport for the locals.

Everywhere you look there is a bike locked to a fence or a pole. These simple modes of transportation allow the air in Amsterdam to seem so fresh and so clean. The city lacks the great amounts of pollution that the excessive use of cars creates.

In contrast to the beauty, there is a section of the city that is dark. In De Wallen, the streets are not only lined by canals but by windows as well. Beyond the glass of the windows are beautiful women selling themselves. The act of prostitution is legal within the city. As I walked along the Red-light District, I could not help but feel sad wondering how or why each woman was behind those windows. Did they choose to be there? Do they have no other options?

Have they been forced to be there?

The combination of beauty and darkness left me with an unforgettable weekend in the Netherlands. I explored the entire city. I shopped for hours on street after street in store after store. I appreciated history and art by visiting the home of Anne Frank and the Vincent Van Gogh museum. If you get the opportunity to visit Amsterdam, definitely do so for the city provides plenty of diverse and cultural experiences.

The reality of a professional sports beat

Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu For my entire life, ever since I was a kid, I have wanted to be a journalist. In the past six months and change, I have been able to experience what my dream job of covering the Philadelphia Flyers is all about.

I shadowed the Flyers’ beat writer for the Philadelphia Inquirer for a game last month and a game in October, and having full press access to a professional sporting event as a college student was one of the coolest experiences a college student can have.

After doing this twice, I came away feeling that covering a professional sports team, like the Flyers, was much better than I thought it would be from an outside perspective.

The perks of this job are great. You get to go to every game. You make very cool relationships with players, coaches, executives, and other writers all across the league. If you like to travel, it is perfect for you. And you get to be around a professional sports team all year.

However, after experiencing this twice, I have

found out that covering a professional sports beat is a very stressful, demanding, and time-consuming job.

One of the hardest parts about this job is that it is very difficult to have a family while being at games late at night and traveling for a good part of the year. It seems obvious, but it is something that is a big factor in this type of job.

The journalist I shadowed has been at the Inquirer since the 1980’s, and he started out covering high school sports. It wasn’t until his kids were out on their own that he decided to take a beat job.

As a parent and being on the road for a lot of the year, you miss a lot of events that your kids partake in. There is a lot a writer can miss while being on 10 day road trips and flying from city to city.

Obviously I want to have kids and a family someday, but a professional beat job is ideal for a single person.

It is also difficult writing on deadlines, as it is for all journalists. For instance, the game I had press access to in October didn’t end until 10:05ish.

The writer I shadowed had a 10:30p.m. deadline for print, and he had 25 minutes to run downstairs

to the locker room, get quotes, and finish his story.

The good part is that most writers write their game-story during the game. Also, most gamestories must be submitted at the buzzer without quotes. We did not leave the Wells Fargo Center until around midnight.

So for hockey writers, they are at the arena in the morning for the morning skate, have a break in between that and maybe 3p.m., and are right back to work. It is anything but normal banker hours.

Probably the most harsh part about this job is that you deal with a lot of idiots, especially on social media. It seems dumb, but it’s true. You have to be able to deal with people having an issue with everything you tweet, everything you write, and basically everything you say.

Covering a professional sports team is a job that takes a tremendous amount of focus and poise.

And there are only a select few that make it to this level. The key is to separate yourself from the rest.

To separate yourself, networking is key. To make it this high in the field, a huge work ethic is required.

But let’s remember: being a journalist is not about doing it for the money per-say, it’s about doing something that you love to do.

This is not your mama’s birth control Meghan Mausteller Staff Writer mlm6713@lhup.edu The IUD is a safe and effective form of birth control that is underutilized by young women in the United States.

IUD stands for intrauterine device and it is a tiny T-shaped device that is inserted directly into the uterus. It is a long-term birth control that can last from three to ten years. There are two types of IUDs available in the United States, hormonal and copper.

I use Skyla, a hormonal IUD. It is produced by the same company as Mirena, but is several millimeters smaller, making it a better fit for women who have never been pregnant.

Before switching to Skyla, I used “the pill” for five years. It worked when I was in high school, but after starting college it became harder to manage.

When my mom casually mentioned switching to a different birth control method, I was more than a little resistant to the change. I heard all the horror stories about IUDs going through a woman’s uterus and making her infertile, or slipping and causing pregnancy. I also knew that the insertion process

caused mild to strong discomfort.

But rather than refusing my mom’s advice, I did some research of my own. After looking at both NuvaRing and Depo-Provera, I went back to the IUD, but while my mom recommended Mirena, I looked at Skyla because it was designed for women my age.

The more I researched, the more I loved it. The IUD is one of the most effective forms of birth control available. Between 0.2 and 0.8 percent of women become pregnant while using an IUD. They are also incredibly safe, with less than one percent of users developing complications.

IUDs also come highly recommended by gynecologists. Female ob-gyn usage of IUDs is three times higher than that of the general public.

Benefits of IUDs can include reduced period cramps and flow. For most users, menstruation flow is reduced by 90 percent and for many women it ceases entirely. It is also easily reversible and a woman can become pregnant soon after it is removed.

Like any form of birth control, it has side effects and it’s not for everyone; however, I encourage all women to wade through the mountains of misinformation and look into more effective forms of birth control. It’s time to open our eyes to birth control in the 21st century.

Be the voice of improvement Josh Cenderelli Staff Writer jxc3298@lhup.edu There are a little over 20 million college students in the United States right now, which makes up about 6.5 percent of the US population.

This would make us one of the top special interest groups in the country.

Most of us are the age to vote, and we should.

It is important to select people who can operate in the interest of college students and those repaying student loans. We need a special interest group so we can be heard.

Let’s face it, those ranging in ages from 14-30 are the future of this country. With that in mind, we have a lot on our plates when we tackle national issues and global issues. What we need is for the US government to hear us.

With student loans at an all-time high in terms of amount, and with college tuition at an all-time high, many of us are weary about graduating and paying it off. There is more than 1 trillion dollars of

college debt, and it is crippling students.

The staggering amount of debt is making it tough for students to pay it back. That being said, the average student is graduating with $26,600 in debt. This is a negative sum game for borrowers, taxpayers, and the economy.

With taxpayers dollars going to fund the federal debt, if students default, then it becomes the burden of the taxpayers, which is anyone working, to carry the debt. For students, accruing this debt, along with being thrown into the market to find a job, place to live, and maybe buying a car, the expenses add up quickly.

The economy might be taking a hit as well.

With graduates having less buying power, the market may experience shorter growth periods and longer recessionary periods.

The most important questions to tackle are, what needs to happen, and how can we achieve this.

Now there needs to be major changes to federal student aid, like Pell Grants, and student loans.

There also needs to be tax benefits, and all of this would focus on increasing college completion and

aiding in affordability. There are many different solutions, all which can coincide to help meet the goals of college students.

The goals would be a lower interest rates while in school, a cap on interest rates, preventing unnecessary and risky private borrowing, stopping the taxation of Pell grants as income, and to increase higher education tax benefits. This will provide much assistance to lower income college students, and assist students who receive help from parents and grandparents by providing more financially viable options for them while in school.

How would we tackle this? This would come by targeting other special interest groups that are able to give up something, such as tackling fraud in welfare and removing poor policies from the Social Security Act. We are millennials; we are going to have the most important job in the future, and we are trapped by a government that makes us feel unsure of whether they are there to hurt us or help us. We need to be heard, and we need to be heard in force.

Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu I recently walked into Walmart looking for a few items; nothing abnormal, just your average necessities. I walked through the doors, turned left toward the pharmacy and BAM! To my surprise, I walked into a freaking Christmas wonderland.

People, this has gone on long enough!

We are just a few short days into November and Christmas has already taken over. When are businesses going to see that Thanksgiving comes before Christmas, and Christmas decorations shouldn’t be hung up around Halloween decorations?

I mean seriously, Walmart is a prime suspect.

Halloween is now over and everything Halloween related is on clearance, but right next to a shrunken head and fake blood is Santa’s smiling face. Kids are going to be horrified finding Santa in cahoots with such things!

Walmart isn’t the only store that does this; many stores across the United States are to blame. Christmas decorations are up and ready to be sold a week before Halloween. As soon as Halloween is over, Christmas trees and blow up Rudolph’s are on display- everywhere.

Don’t get me wrong, I celebrate Christmas and I love the holiday, but when did Christmas become such a commercialized celebration? The holiday season is supposed to be about family and getting together to enjoy one another’s company. Rather,

Christmas has become all about who has the more expensive gift and whose house is decorated the best.

Instead of enjoying Thanksgiving and all the amazing food that comes with it, people would rather go out on Black Friday and get trampled on for items that probably aren’t much cheaper then than they are any other time of year. This is one thing I will personally never understand.

Christmas has always been a fun holiday for me but as of lately it is becoming a hassle. I start worrying that my gifts aren’t good enough and that my house isn’t as festive as the neighbor’s next door. None of those things are what the true spirit of Christmas is about.

I should probably stop sounding like an old classic Christmas movie, but aren’t those sappy, terribly made films what make the holidays so special? Sitting around drinking hot chocolate with the family while watching the Snow and Heat Misers battle it out?

Christmas is a fun and great holiday.

Let me rephrase that.

Christmas in December is a fun and great holiday. Christmas any other month is just annoying and intrudes on the importance of the family holidays that precede it.

Men’s soccer eliminated in first round of PSAC playoffs Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Four years and one day after being eliminated by Bloomsburg in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC), the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team had a chance to avenge that defeat.

Bloomsburg, however, had different plans as they defeated LHU 2-1 in double-overtime.

Austin Transue of Bloomsburg got the scoring started in the 18th minute with his 12th goal of the season. A shot from 20 yards out slipped into the lower left corner of the net. The Bald Eagle defense tightened up the rest of the first half and kept the deficit at one heading into halftime.

Out of the half, the Bloomsburg offense continued to pepper LHU goalie, Troy Teresak with shots.

Lock Haven, however, began to gain momentum in the 71st minute.

Thirteen minutes later, junior Troy Amspacher netted the equalizer off a pass from senior Jacob Oldaker. The goal was Amspacher’s ninth of the

season.

The first of two overtime periods came and went without either side conceding a goal. Then, four minutes into the second overtime, Transue scored the game-winner for the Huskies of Bloomsburg. The dynamic playmaker came into the contest second in the PSAC in points, goals and game-winning goals.

The Lock Haven defense was anchored all game by the play of Teresak. Bloomsburg finished with 21 shots; 11 of which were on goal.

The sophomore ended with eight saves which was his second most in a game all season. He previously had nine against Roberts Wesleyan and California (Pa.).

In the defeat, Tyler Weikert was one of nine Bald Eagles to play all 104 minutes who the junior midfielder was the team’s ironman all season long. He played 1,728 minutes out of a possible 1,755 minutes, or 99 percent.

Head coach Doug Moore and his team finish the season with a 7-11-1 overall record.

Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University volleyball team (17-11, 9-8 PSAC) picked up a huge win in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East match at home against Pitt-Johnstown (24-4, 15-2 PSAC), 3-1 (20-25, 21-25, 25-17, 25-23, & 15-12) Lock Haven dropped the first two sets, but came back and won the next three to complete the come back and beat UPJ. Sarah Gomish (Ebensburg, Pa./Bishop Carroll) led LHU with 19 kills. In a 25-23 fourth set, Gomish had seven of her 19 kills and provided a huge spark for the Bald Eagle offense.

Freshman Brittany Moyer (Orwigsburg, Pa./Blue Mountain) finished with 15 kills and senior Megan Flick (Howard, Pa./Bald Eagle) added 13 kills and three service aces.

Jessica Brown (Fawn Grove, Pa./Kennard-Dale) led the Bald Eagles with 39 assists and also added three service aces. Sydney Belcastro (Aliquippa, Pa./Hopewell) had 34 digs and one service ace.

Lock Haven will be back in action Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. when it hosts East Stroudsburg.

Sponseller claims 184-pound title at Clarion Open Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu

Upcoming Wrestling Schedule Sunday, November 8: Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open (9a.m.)

Redshirt-freshman Tristan Sponseller won all four of his matches en route to winning the 184-pound title at the Clarion Open on Sunday, Nov. 1.

Sponseller admirably stepped in to fill the void created by the departure of three-time NCAA qualifier, Fred Garcia. The East Berlin native went undefeated his senior season at Bermudian Springs and claimed a PIAA State Championship.

He went 23-16 last year while competing unattached.

The trio of Bobby Rehm, Aaron McKinney and Phil Sprenkle all finished second for the Bald Eagles. Rehm (133) and McKinney (157) both dropped a weight-class to strengthen the lineup for third year coach, Scott Moore.

Rehm, who has 83 career victories, went 3-1 before losing to No. 9 George DiCamillo from Virginia.

As for McKinney, he went 4-1 on the day before falling to Andrew Atkinson, who is also from Virginia.

Sprenkle, the returning 187-pound redshirt-senior, also fell to a Virginia Cavalier in the finals. This time was No. 9 Zach Nye who edged Sprenkle 2-1 (SV).

On the day, Moore saw his wrestlers post a .694 winning percentage (50-22) with 10 major decisions, seven tech falls and seven pins.

The Lock Haven Bald Eagles return to action next Sunday, Nov. 8 at the Jonathan Kaloust Bearcat Open in Vestal, New York. The tournament is hosted

by Binghamton University. LHU will begin dual action on Friday, Nov. 13 at 7p.m. when they will travel to University Park to wrestle No. 2 Penn State Nittany Lions.

Football denied first three-game winning streak since 1981 Josh Kutchner Guest Writer jmk9834@lhup.edu Lock Haven football lost a hard fought game to Kutztown over the weekend, 34-20. It was perfect football weather as the sun was shining and the temperature was a cool 48 degrees. Lock Haven had a lot on the line Saturday as a win would have given the team their first three-game winning streak since 1981. QB Caleb Walton played well in his return to action, throwing for 214 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions. Walton’s touchdown tied him with Bob McLaughlin for the most passing touchdowns in a single season in school history (18).

RB Malyk Harris (No. 23 below, left) impressed again this weekend, rushing for over 200 yards for the second straight week. Harris averaged an astonishing 9.7 yards per carry against Kutztown on his way to 224 total rushing

yards. Harris also managed to run one in for a score in the second quarter. WR Shawn Seif (No. 13 below, right) also impressed in his return to action. Seif played with what appeared to be a hand injury, but still managed to lead the team in receiving. The redshirt junior had a busy day, compiling 10 catches for 108 yards. Junior receiver, Dan Krupko caught QB Walton’s only passing touchdown of the game. Krupko finished with 5 catches for 57 yards.

Defensively, Lock Haven had five players rack up double-digit tackles. Senior LB, Tony Ballon lead the way, totaling 11 stops on the day. Sophomore DB, Carlos Balkcom managed two pass breakups for the Bald Eagles, the only player to record such a statistic. Junior LB, Aaron Hepburn led the team in tackles for a loss with two.

Kutztown outgained Lock Haven 524 total yards to 433 total yards. The Golden Bears also outgained Lock Haven in time of possession 36:54-23:06. Each team was close to even in third

down conversions with Kutztown going 6-11 as Lock Haven went 6-12. The Bald Eagles suffered 43 penalty yards on 6 penalties, but they played a cleaner game than their opponent, who had 9 penalties for 73 yards. The game featured just one turnover. Unfortunately, that turnover was a fumble by the Bald Eagles that was recovered by the Golden Bears.

The game itself was an entertaining one with each team going back and forth. Kutztown scored first with Lock Haven eventually answering in the second quarter. Kutztown came right back and scored again just a little more than three minutes later. Lock Haven then scored less than four minutes into the second half on a Caleb Walton TD run. That score tied the game at 13.

Kutztown then went on a fierce run that Lock Haven couldn’t recover from. The Golden Bears put up 21 unanswered points between the third and fourth quarters until the Bald Eagles finally scored late in the game, leaving fans disappointed in a 34-20 defeat.
