Presented by ASA: LHU celebrates the Festival of Lights Josh Cenderelli Staff Writer jxc3298@lhup.edu The Asian Student Association (ASA) presented a celebration of the Festival of Lights in the PUB on Oct. 27. They invited the NYC Bhangra Dance Company, a group specializing in Southeast Asian dances, to perform many different styles of dance.

The Festival of Lights, which is also called Diwali, is a Hindu celebration of the triumph of good over evil. It is a five day celebration that dates back thousands of years. Anastasiia Iarygina, the secretary of ASA said, “This holiday is the biggest in India and also one of the most fun to celebrate.”

The NYC Bhangra Dance Company performed eight dances that mixed in classical, semi-classical, modern Bollywood, a Bollywood pop fusion hybrid, Gidda a traditional Punjab dance and bhangra. The largest event that this group hosts and organize is Holi in New York City, which is the Festival of Colors. To find out more about this event you can visit nycholi.com.

Megha Kalia, the lead choreographer for the company said, “I think every culture offers its own uniqueness, whether it’s the food, music or dances. When you immerse yourself in another culture you transform into somebody that

you did not know, and when you see yourself transformed in a manner that is absolutely enriching and enlightening life becomes more meaningful.” Indian dances are explosive and joyful because bhangra, which is Indian for celebration is meant to be happy. The NYC Bhangra Dance Company looks forward to coming back for Diwali next year.

ASA puts together many programs that are about exposing students to many different cultures which are not restricted to Asia. They work together with the International Student Association at Lock Haven to incorporate as many cultures as they can. They also work with Avenue 209 to celebrate diversity. They plan on having a Chinese Thanksgiving late this year. Students who wish to get involved or receive information about ASA can email Aminesh Chavan, the president of ASA, at ajc3349@lhup.edu. Chavan says, “ASA is a great program to meet people both from the US and from other countries. It is a great extracurricular to add to a resume, especially because a lot of the officers are seniors so they will be replacing positions at President, Vice President and Secretary.”

City councilwoman running for reelection Joanna Harlow Reporter ejh1498@lhup.edu Sara Stringfellow, an English secondary education major at Lock Haven, is running for City Council. I sat down with her this week to ask about her experience in politics, and her goals for the future.

Sara has been part of the City Council since last May and is running for reelection in the 2015 general election which will take place Nov. 3.

Students that have a permanent address in Clinton County are encouraged to vote.

Voting will take place from 7pm until 8pm. Students can visit clintoncountypa.com or call 570.893.4019 to find out where they can cast their ballots.

JH-Can you tell me a little about the title that you are running for?

What are the responsibilities of the City Council?

SS- “The council consists of 7 people including the mayor and functions as the voice for the city. They make the decisions for what happens and grant permission for events to take place. Council also votes on important matters such as how to spend money that we receive to fix things in the city.”

JH- How did you get involved in politics? What is important to you about this seat?

SS- “I have lived with my aunt and uncle, Marie and Rick Vilello, since I have been 8 years old. My uncle is the former Mayor of Lock Haven. He served the community for 16 years. My aunt is the current Clinton County Prothonotary. She has been serving the county for 4 years.

Politics is something I grew up with, it has always been a part of my life and it’s something that, like my family, I found an interest in as well. I’ve learned from my aunt and uncle that you have to be the change you want to see. So politics is something I’m getting into so that I have a voice in the changes for the future of our community.”

JH- What will you bring to the community if you win?

SS- “If I win, I really want to work on the relationship the city and the university have. Being a university student and serving on council at the same time gives me a different view than most people have. I see all the wonderful things that the city has to offer and I also see the great things that the university has to offer. By forming a closer working relationship between the city and the university I believe it would provide many more opportunities for every citizen in the community. I really want to see more college kids and just young people in general get more involved in the community. By forming a better relationship I think it will be easier to get them involved and give them a desire to be a part of the community that they are living in.”

JH-What is the importance of having young people involved in local government?

SS- “It is so important for young people to be involved in local government. Young people are the voices of tomorrow. The decisions that the city make today are going to affect all the young people that are growing up in this community in the future. The average citizen of Lock Haven is a single female, age about 22. That includes most of the college kids living in Lock Haven. When you live in a community that has those kinds of statistics, those young people should be voicing their opinions on what happens in their community. Young people have different ideas and perspectives on issues than older people do. However, if young people do not step up and let their ideas be heard then they are never recognized. Young people need to make more of an initiative to become involved in their local government because as young people we are the future of our community and the future should reflect our ideas.”

JH- What is the campaigning process like?

SS- “The campaigning process is definitely an interesting journey. My campaign process has consisted of buying signs and buttons to promote my candidacy. Besides promoting myself through signs and buttons, I have also had to attend many events where I have been asked to speak about myself and why I want to be on city council. It has been a true learning experience.”

Public Safety announcement on bicycle laws and safety tips The following is an announcement from public safety regarding laws and safety tips for motorists regarding bicycle riders.

Bicycle Laws 1. Before passing, you must first assess if you can maneuver around the bicyclist. Be sure to check for oncoming traffic. Important! When passing, you must allow at least four feet between your vehicle and a bicycle for the vehicle to safely pass the bicycle. When safe to do so, it is legal to cross the center double yellow line if necessary to provide the required four feet when passing a bicycle.

2. Unless making a Left turn, bicyclists traveling at less than normal speed must keep to the right side of the roadway when there is more than one lane marked for travel in that direction, and must travel in the same direction as the rest of traffic. Bicyclists may keep to the left on ONE WAY roadways.

3. When there is only one travel lane, bicyclists may use any portion of the lane to avoid hazards on the roadway, including a safe distance from stopped and parked cars.

4. No turn by the driver of a motor vehicle shall interfere with a bicyclist proceeding straight on a roadway or shoulder.

5. It is illegal to force a bicyclist off of the road. If you do this, you may face criminal charges.

6. While bicyclists are vehicle operators and are expected to obey all traffic laws, they may travel at less than the posted minimum speed and may not be cited for impeding traffic. Bicyclists may operate on a shoulder or berm, but are not required to do so.

Safety Tips 1. When approaching or passing a bicycle, slow down to a safe and prudent speed.

2. After you have passed a bicyclist, do not slow down or stop quickly.

Vehicle brakes are more powerful than a bicycle’s, and you could be responsible for causing a crash.

3. Do not sound your horn close to bicyclists, unless you must do so to avoid a crash.

Michael Moshe Dahan showcases ‘Two Points of Failure’ Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu This month students and faculty are invited to stop by Sloan Gallery to see the work of Michael Moshe Dahan’s in the exhibit “Two Points of Failure”. The show consists of print work and video and will be on display until Nov. 20.

Dahan is based out of LA and has a notable film career as a producer on big-budget films including the Mel Gibson film “The Patriot”. He is currently an MFA candidate at the University of California/ Irvine.

Upon entering the gallery, you will hear ambient noise, perhaps hard to place until you realize it is emanating from a screen at the far end of the room. The video is the centerpiece of the exhibit. At 13 minutes, the film is short enough for the casual viewer, offering a more temporal vision of Dahan’s physical pieces. It appeared at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and the Tribeca Film Festival in 2014.

The film begins with a photo-negative of director Jean-Luc Godard, pioneer of the French New Wave of cinema, staring through a film camera prototype. The fixed camera shows the negative moving within the bath, the image dissolving slowly. The film transitions between the dissolving negative and an inversion of the footage which shows its reconstruction.

In the beginning, there is the blinding whiteness of the light table, then the negative is slapped garishly into the corrosive solution. After a few minutes, the medium becomes more apparent,

the grain of the negative shows through and the subject loses its power. The maroon residue has the viscosity and movement of blood in water and the experience of watching the entire film is threatening. The viewer is reminded of the natural processes, and perhaps their own discomfort with decay. The image gives way to its reverse and teals and purples mix with the reds in engaging patterns, making for an entertaining viewing experience if the viewer is a trained eye.

Dahan’s film reflects the Structuralist films of the 1960s with a fixed camera and sound taken directly from the filming process. When asked whether he considered the film a structuralist piece, the Dahan said that the movement was certainly an inspiration for the work, but that it is not derivative. The film takes on the tradition of Hollis Frampton’s “(nostalgia)” in which the filmmaker talks about personal photos while burning them on a hot-plate.

Dahan says that the work is a performance of cinema death, quite literally commemorating the switch from film to digital in the movie industry.

The works on paper are subtle, and it was surprising to learn that they were not deliberate.

They are in fact the residue left over from the dissolution process. Though they were not planned, many have striking compositions and fine use of blank space. The soft contrast of gray against white gives the works a less aggressive tone, but effectively evokes age and memory. The chemical splashes again resemble a natural process, and indicate mold growth and other signs of age in nature, though they were created in a highly curated environment.

Dahan also have several drawings in ink on several layers of transparent material. The effect of the layers is indirect, but adds depth to the works, which are mainly of small film cameras. The red and blue palette connote technical drafts, but the cameras are loosely drawn upon closer inspection, and the mark making is expressive. Dahan says he is touching on the same concepts as Freud’s short essay “The Mystic Writing Pad” which purports that the mind has an unconscious and a protective layer. Freud describes a sheet of celluloid, a sheet of translucent wax paper and a wax slab. When one writes upon the pad, an inscription is left on the celluloid, made possible by its contact with the wax paper. To remove the inscription, one merely needs to lift the sheets. This metaphor for the mind’s way of capturing memory is tied to artist’s use of layering, and the idea of decay.

Dahan talked during his lecture about the theoretical role of the camera and explores this idea with the works which could almost be called portraits. The importance of the character of the camera is apparent in the film as well.

The narrative that the work is built around is about Jean-Luc Godard and his need for a smaller camera. In the 1960s, when Godard was at his height, film cameras were gigantic and Godard felt removed from the action. The negative dissolving in the video depicts Godard and a prototype of the 35 mm camera he commissioned. Unfortunately, the camera never worked. Dahan is playing with the idea of seeing and the mechanics of looking, something Godard was reimagining at the time the photo was taken.

Did You Know? New crime show is wickedly good In Friday the 13th, the scene with the snake was not in the script and was an idea from Tom Savini after an experience in his own cabin during filming.

Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu “Wicked City”, a new drama based in 1980’s Los Angeles begins the saga of the next Bonnie and Clyde.

Starring former “Gossip Girl” star, Ed Westwick, and, former “Parenthood” star, Erika Christensen it invites viewers into an insatiable world of sex, drugs and murder.

“Wicked City” is about a LAPD homicide detective, Jack Roth, (played by Jeremy Sisto) who is determined to bring down the two Bonnie and Clyde like serial killers, Kent Grainger (played by Ed Westwick) and Betty Beaumontaine (played by Erika Christensen). You find out early on in the show that Kent is a necrophiliac and an attention seeker, but also has a genuine gift in caring for children. Betty, a nurse and mother of two, almost becomes one of Kent’s victims until he finds out she has kids and is also has sociopathic tendencies.

First of all, it is great to see Westwick back on TV! His character on “Gossip Girl”, Chuck Bass, was the typical bad boy, but now Westwick is bringing his bad boy act to an all new high. Westwick does a great job of showing two

different sides to his character, the homicidal side and the caretaker side.

Christensen did a great job in a different kind of scene than what she is used to. She was still a mother, like back in “Parenthood,” but darker. You can tell she isn’t too sure about Kent, but knows being with him is going to be interesting.

The other half of the show dealt with the police department’s point of view, which in my opinion was kind of bland. It was very similar to “Law and Order,” which is a great show, but I was hoping for something more from this perspective of the show.

Another good feature of this show is the production’s soundtrack. It includes many 80s hits like “Dancing With Myself” by Billy Idol and Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love”. The songs really add to the plot, and every time Kent finds a new victim it is almost as if the songs are helping tell the story and giving clues to his next attack.

I definitely recommend “Wicked City” for those of you interested in a crime drama and also for those of you who have missed seeing Ed Westwick on TV. The show definitely has its dry spots, but I am willing to look past them and hope that further into the season it picks up.

“Wicked City” is on Tuesdays at 10 P.M. on ABC.

Guess the CBS’s new show ‘Supergirl’ is a super success Movie Quote!

CBS premiered their most highly anticipated new show of the season, “Supergirl”. It aired on Monday night to soaring ratings. With superheroes being the new norm at the box office, it’s no surprise that audiences, and myself, couldn’t wait to watch the Girl of Steel take flight.

Based off the DC Comics superhero, “Supergirl” follows Kara Danvers, played by Melissa Benoist. Kara is from the planet Krypton and just happens to be Superman’s cousin. Her parents sent a 13-year-old Kara to earth to protect the infant Kal-El. There was an issue with her escape pod and she arrived more than two decades too late to carry out her mission. Kal-El had already grown into Superman.

Years later, Kara is living as a typical 24-year-old.

She’s the assistant to Cat Grant, the founder of the media company CatCo. While Kara is happy with her normal life, she’s always wondered if she could do amazing things just like her heroic cousin. As she publicly becomes Supergirl, Kara must now deal with all the good and bad that comes with it.

Benoist shines as the Girl of Steel. Her down-to-earth portrayal sets the tone for the entire show. “Supergirl”’s Kara is extremely relatable. She has a thankless job with

a demanding boss and she doesn’t want to disappoint her family. It’s pretty normal stuff until she whooshes off into the air or brushes off bullets. As fantastic as Benoist was, Calista Flockhart stole every scene she was in as Cat Grant. The rest of the cast was also entertaining, including a cameo by Dean Cain.

For the first episode of a new show, the special effects were surprisingly awesome. The first look at Supergirl flying through the air is simply breathtaking. The show takes advantage of Superman’s iconic imagery such as Supergirl saving a plane from crashing.

Speaking of good ol’ Supes, the show makes a deliberate attempt to rarely call him by name. The characters constantly refer to him as Kara’s cousin. This demonstrates that “Supergirl” doesn’t want to simply rely on his fame to drive the series forward.

The dialogue was clunky at points and full of exposition. Hopefully, that will be smoothed out as the series progresses.

There’s an important and pretty obvious feminist undertone to the show. Even a waitress makes some meta remarks that there’s finally a female hero her daughter can look up to. Cat Grant summed it up the best after Kara questions using the name “Supergirl” instead of “Superwoman.” “And what do you think is so bad about “girl”? I’m a girl, and your boss, and powerful, and rich, and hot, and smart. So if you perceive “Supergirl” as anything less than excellent, isn’t the real problem you?”

Zombie herd: A fate worse than Jon Snow Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu

Spoilers! The Walking Dead started season six with three entirely action packed episodes that keep you so absorbed in what’s happening that the hours feels like mere minutes. The first two episodes showed the points of view of those in Alexandria fighting the Wolves and those leading the herd of zombies away from the town. With the blaring of a horn in Alexandria, the viewers’ emotions are shot, hacked, stabbed and utterly destroyed, like multiple walkers, Alexandrians and Wolves until every viewer is sitting there at the end of episode three with empty eyes and hearts more dead than the walkers that destroyed us body and soul.

The Talking Dead spoke about episode two and said it was such a great episode because so many people died but it wasn’t anyone we cared about.

But it was spoken too soon. In episode three, one of our un-killables was killed and Nicolas’s suicide broke America’s heart as The Talking Dead said.

Not because he’s dead, because everyone wanted him to die, but because when he died, his body pushed Glen off of the dumpster they were barely receiving refuge from and they fell into the arms of the herd of walkers. Glen is dead.

But this is where viewer denial comes in. Were the entrails being eaten Nicolas’s or Glen’s? Nicolas fell on top of Glen so maybe what the camera was showing was a trick to make us believe Glen was dying. The same thing happened during the season finale of season 5 when we thought Nicolas

had left Glen for dead to be eaten by the walker on top of him. But Glen is an unkillable character so he survived. The same thing will happen again right? It has to.

The Talking Dead this Sunday was entirely about helping the audience recover emotionally from this blow but there was enough there to give us hope that maybe Glen isn’t dead. He didn’t show up in the “In Memoria” and the director left a comment saying that parts of Glen would show up either in flashbacks or in the current timeline to “help complete the story.” But what does that mean? Is he really dead? Or will he come back as a walker?

Can we viewers handle that? But how could he have made it out of that situation uneaten or at least unbitten? And then there was the shot to the heart when Rick was calling for Glen over the walkie with no response.

Then the thought that Glen won’t ever go home to Maggie hits you.

Michonne offered to take over the job Glen and Nicolas set out to do because he had his wife back home. Glen said that’s the reason he was going out to do this. Boom. Boom. More shots to the chests of the viewers. He died without ever completing the task he set out to do in order to save his wife, friends and town. But maybe he’s not dead. Maybe.

With Glen’s death smacking us in the face, what everyone else went through was pushed to the side but the deaths were no less impactful. No group made it out of this unscathed and the end of this three-episode-event is still too far away to see. Michonne had on her arm a message saying “You will make it home” but so many did not and will not.

Episode three was so emotionally packed that the audience will have trouble recovering, if they do at all. The title of this episode was very misleading. “Thank you.” Thank you for breaking me inside.

Where in the World: Transylvania, Romania Raymond Stellhorn Columnist rjs2091@lhup.edu We know Transylvania as being the land of vampires and the reason many tourists visit the region, but there is more to the center of Romania than legends of Vlad the Impaler, the man who was the inspiration of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. Some may ask, Pennsylvania and Transylvania sound similar, why is that? Well as you may know Pennsylvania means “Penn’s Forest” in Latin therefore Transylvania roughly means “Land Beyond the Forest”.

During this time of year, Transylvania is a hotbed for local legends and stories dating back to the darker times of the 15th century. Here you can visit “Dracula’s Castle” which is called Bran near the city of Brasov; it is open to tourists daily.

This is the ideal location for pictures not only of the castle but also of the magnificent Romanian landscape.

Elsewhere in Transylvania there are many other churches, castles, fortresses and beautifully preserved medieval settlements.

Among them are the towns of Sibiu and Sighisoara dating back to the 12th century and Rasnov Fortress which was built in the 1300s. The fortified

churches of Biertran, Calnic, Harman, Darjiu, Prejmer, Saschiz, Valea Viilor and Viscri are all classified as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Other UNESCO sites in Romania include the six Dacian fortresses of the Orastie Mountains which date back to 1st centuries BC and AD. Another noteworthy attraction one cannot miss when visiting Transylvania is Salina Turda, a salt mine located in the city of Turda.

Closet costumes for the lazy, late and uncaring Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu Some people just don’t care about Halloween; they just don’t get caught up on the dressing up and looking ridiculous for candy or even just to hang out. I’m one of these people who just can’t bring themselves to care about this holiday the way others do. But we get pressured and guilted into going out with our candy corn eating, candy hogging, Halloween loving friends and we have to come up with a costume.

So if you haven’t gotten a costume yet, or are one of the people who need to find one to appease your friends, here are some costumes you can quickly put together with things you can find in your closet or apartment, or with a quick and cheap run to Walmart.

Identity Theft Get a bunch of “My Name Is” stickers and write a bunch of names on them before sticking them all over your regular clothes. You can be warm, punny and funny.

Out of season Dress up in whatever you have from another holiday. Wear a Santa hat, a St. Patrick’s Day shirt, anything from another holiday and when people ask what you are, just say you’re “Out of season.”

Classic Cowboy/Cowgirl Have jeans, a plaid shirt, some boots, (maybe) a hat? There you go. Girls braid your hair and you’re a stereotypical cowgirl or cowboy and no one can do anything about it because at least you dressed up.

Cereal Killer Grab a box of cereal, stab a plastic knife through it, and use some red marker to scribble over it to make it look like blood.

You, sir, have just murdered that box of cereal.

Walk of Shame We all know what this looks like in the daytime but to dress up as one at night, wear a skirt, borrow a guy’s shirt, wear some heels and one big earring. Mess up your hair a bit and smudge your eyeliner. Shame on you.

A crazy cat lady If you have a bathrobe, wear it. Have some curlers by any chance, put those in your hair. Grab a stuffed cat toy and you are single with twelve more cats waiting for you at home.

Doll It might be too cold but you could wear a floral dress and some matching shoes. Braid your hair in pigtails and put too much blush on your cheeks.

Stare at people with wide eyes all night to freak them out.

James Bond Dress up in a suit and tie and you can be anyone, including James Bond.

Superhero Do you have a tshirt with any superhero label on it? Great, wear it and throw a towel over your shoulders because there’s no better cape than a towel cape. .

Singin’ in the rain I don’t know if it’s going to rain on Halloween but if it does, wear a raincoat and bring an umbrella. When people ask what you are, start singing the famous song, “Singin’ in the Rain.”

Onesie If you have a onesie, wear it. Doesn’t matter what it is, but if it turns you into something all the better. Just wear your onesie and don’t let anyone tell you that you aren’t dressed up. You look fabulous. And you’re comfy and warm.

Cat Draw whiskers on your face. You’re a cat.

Done.

GPA Use duct take to make an upsidedown arrow on your chest. Use any tshirt you want. Now you’re your own GPA. Hopefully you’ll graduate.

Identity Don’t do anything. You’re your own identity.

You do you. Don’t change a thing. You’re beautiful.

Harry Potter Draw a lighting bolt on your forehead. Boom.

You’re Harry Potter. You don’t even have to wear anything Hogwarts. Harry wears casual clothes sometimes. And just say you lost your glasses. Throw your hands around as if you’re looking for them when someone asks. If you hit them in the face, it’s their fault for questioning your costume.

With these lazy costumes, no one can complain that you didn’t dress up. Now go out and put yourself in a candy coma so you can forget about how ridiculous you look.

Abortion: erasing the stigma Meghan Mausteller Staff Writer mlm6713@lhup.edu In college, we talk about sex a lot. We host SexEd Bootcamp and Condom Bingo and we hand out condoms like they’re free candy. Glennon offers free STD testing several times a year. No, we’re not afraid to talk about sex, but we are afraid to talk about pregnancy.

More importantly, we are afraid to talk about abortion.

Statistically, one in three women will have an abortion by the time she is 45. Every day we interact with professors and fellow students who have probably had abortions, so why are we so unwilling to talk about it? What, exactly, are we so afraid of?

I know abortion is a touchy subject. I know it’s not an option every woman is willing to entertain, but the fact remains that there are women who want that door to stay open.

The legality of abortion was never about morals and it has nothing to do with killing babies. Instead, abortion allows women to make informed decisions about their own bodies. It is a constitutionally supported right that all women should have the freedom to exercise.

However, most Lock Haven students would probably not know where to go if they required an abortion. The Planned Parenthood in Lock Haven was closed down, as was the one in State College.

In fact, the closest abortion clinic to LHU is over 100 miles away, an almost unreachable distance.

LHU has students on campus who might consider having abortions, but without proper knowledge and resources, they could have a

difficult time exercising this option.

We have locations on campus for students to go to if they are abused or raped, but these places could provide other services as well. Women’s centers in larger cities provide information on abusive relationships as well as contraceptives and birth control. But more importantly, they give women options on what they can do if their preventative measures fail. Even something as simple as a few informational brochures could take a step toward providing our students with proper knowledge about their reproductive health.

Abortion is a real issue that we oftentimes brush aside until it affects us directly. I’m not saying that our campus should take a stance on abortion, but I do believe that we need to remember that abortion is something our students might need information on. We need to be able to help them when that time comes.

Genetic reconstruction: are we ready?

Connor Poorman Staff Writer cmp7673@lhup.edu It’s crazy sometimes how fast the world moves around you and you don’t know about it. Geneticist Jennifer Doudna co-invented the technology of many ethical movies and sometimes horror movies: DNA editing technology or CRISPR-Cas9. Cas9 will allow scientists to precisely edit DNA strands, cut away genetic diseases and replace them with new healthy strands. It can edit embryotic DNA and even adult DNA. Just as the movies predict however, this tool may also be used to create “designer babies” or babies that are completely designed by their parents on the genetic level. Doudna also recognizes this as a major ethical question: should we allow the use of genetic altering technology?

Before getting to the ethical changes, we should approach the medical upside of this technology. CRISPR is a tool that can enable the cutting and removal of genetic diseaseshow far that range goes, however, is still in trials.

This is still a relatively new technology and scientists are still testing it, however the trials already conducted reveal that it does work. As Doudna points out, this technology is

still far into the trial stages, however it is no longer the work of science fiction.

Genetically altered plants and animals are a usual, and eventually maybe humans will be as well. As of now, it is still far off. For those reasons, Doudna has called for a “global pause in any clinical applications in embryos to give us more time to study the implications of doing so” but it wasn’t just for that reason alone: scientists recognize this is a topic that must be discussed.

As far as I was able to gather from the TED talk, there are no downsides to CRISPR yet, however as I’ve said before: this is still in very early stages and it needs to be studied a little bit more.

That being said, the main reason this is not in clinical use is because of Doudna and her colleagues’ call for a global pause. Those movies or books with genetic science involved always turn out stale, maybe not physically, but for the society that it is presented in.

So the question I would present to everyone is: should we use this technology at all? Or for those of you who are more religious: should we fix God’s work even if it means that person will die?

Disney’s diversity dilemma

The other day I read that Disney was going to make a TV show starring a Hispanic princess named Elena. Needless to say, I got ridiculously excited.

While I realize that I can relate to the struggles and morals of every other princess in shows and movies, or just shows and movies in general, seeing a character on screen that shares some of my culture and heritage is something that I never thought would happen, especially with Disney.

I can’t help but be excited for all the young children who will grow up seeing a princess who looks like them and shares their history on the screen. I’m excited for little children to dress up as this princess for Halloween in the future.

I’m excited for birthday parties, streamers, cakes, bags, clothes, crowns- all decorated with this Hispanic princess. The only thing I’m sad about is the fact that it’s taken this long for a princess to be Hispanic.

The United States is incredibly diverse and yet it will take until 2016

for Disney to include a Hispanic princess in its character base. Of all of the animated Disney princess movies, I can count 6 off the top of my head that are not white; Mulan, Pocahontas, Tiana, Esmerelda, and Jasmin.

And yet, I can count 12 that are white without even looking it up; Merida, Anna, Elsa, Jane, Snow White, Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Ariel, Rapunzel, Meg, Wendy, and Belle. That’s twice as many white vs. non-white.

But Disney isn’t the only company that has this imbalance of representation. Almost every single TV show and movie is predominately white. Maybe a show or movie has their “token” minority but other than that the rest of the characters are most likely white.

For a country that is said to be a “melting pot” and prides itself on its diversity, our media doesn’t really reflect that.

This lack of diversity applies to aspects other than race as well. It applies to sexual orientation, gender identity, autism, intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, personality types, etc.

While I recognize and understand that including people of all these different backgrounds in every piece of media is virtually impossible, I think that we can do better than what we have been doing.

Letter to the editor Local property owner blames LHU fraternity for theft I'm writing to set the record straight regarding some defamatory comments that have recently been made on Facebook by a local gentleman and subsequently shared by an increasing number of people to their own Facebook pages.

This gentleman made criminal accusations towards the Kappa Delta Rho fraternity and its alumni. Typically, I would not write to the newspaper about a Facebook post, but I am in this case, because this man’s libelous comments have been seen by thousands of people.

His comments regard an alleged theft at his property on Main Street during this past Homecoming weekend. Security cameras captured individuals in their 20s or early 30s, walking around the house when the theft is alleged to have occurred.

These individuals told residents of the property that they were former fraternity brothers and it was their chapter house. They laughingly mentioned Kappa Delta Rho, right before this gentleman claims they stole property, waved to the camera, and left.

Apparently, this identification didn't appear suspicious to the property owner, who proceeded to immediately make public accusations of theft against Kappa Delta Rho members and alumni.

When contacted by our fraternity's alumni advisor, who has held the post for several decades and is a decorated law enforcement official, the gentleman not only refused to acknowledge his mistake, he actually accused our advisor of committing a crime too.

The simple fact is this: the house hasn't been the Kappa Delta Rho chapter house for 31 years.

We sold it in 1984, and it was subsequently used by two other fraternities.

Doing the math, that puts the minimum age of KDR alumni from that house at 50+ years old. This current property owner attempted to claim that we owned the property in 2000, which I imagine would come as a surprise to the Alpha Chi Rho brothers who owned it and called it their chapter house at that time.

Further, those video stills were reviewed by our advisor, our Alumni Board and our very active

Alumni Association. It's never been a secret that our Alumni Association is among the largest and most active of any LHU fraternity.

We also keep composite pictures of every Kappa Delta Rho brother, from every year. Not only were the alleged thieves not in the pictures, none of them were recognized by any member of our organization, past or present.

I don't know who the people in the property owner’s video are, but I do know who they aren't.

They're not Kappa Delta Rho members.

This man owes us an apology that is equally as conspicuous as his baseless allegations.

Kappa Delta Rho alumni are not thieves, they are business leaders, Olympic gold medalists, bestselling authors, a Medal of Honor recipient, a past Pennsylvania Governor and even the White House Press Secretary on September 11, 2001.

Benjamin Miller graduated from Lock Haven University in 2001 and is a Kappa Delta Rho alumnus.

LHU wrestling looks to improve on last season Josh Cenderelli Staff Writer jxc3298@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University wrestling team is looking to improve from last year and is gearing up for the beginning of the season.

The first matches of the year will take place at the Clarion Open Tournament this Sunday November 1.

They will be facing four Big 10 Teams this year; they will be at Penn State Friday November 13, Nebraska at the Northeast Duals Sunday November 15, Purdue on Saturday November 21 and will be wrestling Michigan State February 12. Lock Haven will also be hosting three wrestling tournaments this season.

Head Coach Scott Moore will be sending six guys to the Clarion Open on Sunday, they include; Jake Field (125), Bobby Rehm (133), Aaron McKinney (157), Tristan Sponseller (184), Phil Sprenkle (197) and Brad Emerick (285). They will be attached wrestlers for the university, nine other LHU wrestling will be wrestling there unattached.

Dan Neff will be returning as a redshirtsenior and will be leading the Bald Eagles this season. Last year Neff earned All-American status, finishing eighth at the 149 pound

weight class in the NCAA Championships, becoming Lock Haven’s first All-American since 2007. Neff will be down at the 141-pound weight class, and will be looking to make his fourth straight appearance at the NCAA championships.

Three wrestlers look to expand the 100win club this season after Fred Garcia won his 100th match last year. Dan Neff enters the season with 83 wins, Bobby Rehm with 80 wins, and Aaron McKinney with 71.

In the 2014-15 season, LHU went 7-12 overall and 3-3 in the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL), finishing third overall with 101.5 points, this also marks the most EWL wins since the 2004-05 season. Ten wrestlers finished in the top five, and nine finished fourth or better. It marks the second straight season that Lock Haven finished third in the EWL. The team looks to solidify its team, adding redshirt-freshman, Tristan Sponseller, to the lineup at the 184 pound weight class. This spot was left vacant by three-time NCAA qualifier Fred Garcia. Sponseller went 26-13 last year while competing unattached, a remarkable feat for a true Freshman. In Sponseller’s senior season at his high school, Bermudian Springs, he went undefeated to his PIAA championship victory. Before winning the tournament his senior year, he placed second as a junior and placed third his sophomore year.

The Lock Haven University Men’s soccer team (7-9-1, 6-4 PSAC) took a tough loss to Slippery Rock University (10-6, 6-4 PSAC) on Saturday, Oct. 24, 2015. Slippery Rock cruised to a 5-0 victory despite LHU leading the game in shot attempts.

Slippery Rock’s Kenton Keeslar opened the scoring with a goal just over eight minutes into the game. Peter Boylan added a second goal 22 minutes into the first half to give SRU a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.

Slippery Rock would go on to add three more goals in the second half to run away with the win. Lock Haven took 14 shots in the game, but failed to get one past the SRU goalkeeper.

LHU honored its seniors before the game and, despite the loss, they secured their place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) playoffs.

Prior to the start season, the Bald Eagles were picked to finish No. 10 in the PSAC Preseason Coaches Poll. As it currently stands before their Halloween matchup at California (Pa.), they are fifth in the conference.

The PSAC playoff berth is their first since 2011 when they fell to Bloomsburg on penalty kicks, 7-6.

Mountain cruises to title, Bald Eagles soar to 3-peat Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lhup.edu On top of Dylan Mountain’s individual title and seven All-Conference performers, the No. 9 Lock Haven University men’s cross country team cruised to its third straight Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship.

The Bald Eagles had six runners finish among the race’s top-12 and Lock Haven’s entire top-seven earned All-PSAC status by way of finishing among the top-30 today.

LHU’s eighth and ninth runners’ finished 31st and 32nd as The Haven flexed its muscle and dominated the field.

Led by Mountain’s individual victory, the top-seven Bald Eagle runners finished first, third, eighth, 10th, 11th, 12th and 26th (scoring place; 28th overall) to score 33 team points. LHU beat second-place Shippensburg (46 points) by 13 points.

Today’s title marks Lock Haven’s eighth conference crown and third straight. LHU’s first PSAC team championship came in 2003.

Mountain, who finished fourth at the PSAC Championships in each of the last two seasons, left little doubt today, making it a one-man race early, as he broke from the pack and cruised to the win. Mountain covered the 8K course in 24:57, beating the second-place finishing by over 13 seconds.

Addison Monroe, Matt Guiod, Alex Diltz, Ben Robinson and Jacob Fetterman all finished among the top12 and Jereamy Hall also earned AllPSAC status by finishing 28th overall (26th scoring).

Monroe turned in a tough race, finishing third overall with a time of 25:12.5.

Guiod was eighth with a time of 25:38.1.

Diltz, Robinson and Fetterman placed 10th (25:47.3), 11th (25:48.1) and 12th (25:49.8).

Hall clocked a time of 26:23.3.

LHU is set to host the Go Fast River Run on Saturday, Oct. 31.

LHU will also play host to the 2015 NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Championships on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Tobias, Dennis combine to stun Millersville, 36-28 Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Third-string quarterback, Cameron Tobias attempted to connect with redshirt-senior David Cook on a fade in the corner of the end zone, but it was sophomore tight end Del’Vaughn Dennis who came down with the gamewinning touchdown pass with two seconds left in a thrilling victory over Millersville, 36-28.

Shaun Jones, a redshirt-senior, started his first career game at quarterback for the Bald Eagles with Caleb Walton sidelines with an injury. Walton’s injury snapped his streak of 23 consecutive games started for LHU. The Jones-led offense took the field for the first time and orchestrated a 13 play, 81-yard touchdown drive that culminated with a 15-yard touchdown reception by Dennis. The Bald Eagles took a 7-0 lead into the second quarter.

Following a 56-yard touchdown pass from Millersville to even the scoring, junior Malyk Harris scampered for a 24-yard touchdown run to put Lock Haven up, 14-7. Harris received 28 carries on the day as he was filling in for the injured Beau Swales. Like Jones, this was Harris’ first career start at running back and he took advantage of the opportunity that was presented to him. His 28 carries led to 200 yards (7.1 average) and two touchdowns. The 200 yards was the most for a Bald Eagle running back since 2005 and the ninth-most all-time.

Millersville answered right back with a score of their own with 2:37 left in the first half, but 46 seconds later, Harris found the end zone with a 48-yard touchdown run to send LHU to the half with a 21-14 lead For the fourth time this season, the Lock Haven offense was shut out in the third quarter. The third quarter has been a season-long problem for LHU as they average a mere 3.75 points in the quarter. For context, the offense averages 6.75 points in the first quarter, 8.25 points in the second quarter and 6.88 points in the fourth quarter.

The Marauders connected on a 17-yard touchdown pass to know the game up at 21 which set up a decisive fourth quarter.

Following an Alex Boumerhi field goal, Millersville struck through the air to take their first lead of the game, 28-24. Millersville sophomore, Kevin Wiggins tormented the LHU defense all day as he hauled in 12 passes for 150 yards and four touchdowns. Wiggins’ four touchdown receptions set a Millersville school-record.

With 2:34 on the clock, the LHU offense went back to work looking for their second consecutive win.

Facing a 3rd-and-10 from the Millersville 11-yard line, Tobias looked in Cook’s direction with the game on the line. The Millersville defensive back was in position to make a play, but failed to get his head around and as Cook attempted to bring the ball in, it hit the defensive backs helmet and popped into the air. Enter Del’Vaughn Dennis. Dennis was paired with Cook to Tobias’ left and was running a 9-route combination. As the Millersville DB was signaling incomplete to the referee, Dennis and Cook were celebrating with their teammates.

Dennis ended the game as the team’s leading receiver with seven receptions for 86 yards and two touchdowns.

On the ensuing kickoff, Millersville attempted to lateral the ball but fumbled and Connor Marisco scooped and scored to end the game at 36-28.

Defensively, senior linebacker, Tony Ballon continued to anchor the unit.

He recorded 13 more tackles which pushed his team-high total to 77 on the season.

The victory marked the second straight season that Lock Haven completed the Cheyney/Millersville sweep.

Head coach Dave Taynor and his team will return to Hubert Jack Stadium on Halloween to play the Golden Bears of Kutztown at 1 p.m. The all-time series between these institutions is deadlocked at 14-14-1, but Kutztown has won the last seven meetings.

Lock Haven will be seeking their third consecutive victory which has not happened since 1981.
