SpaceX successfully lands rocket.

SpaceX has been repeatedly trying to land a rocket successfully on a platform in the ocean and on Friday they finally did. The rocket’s engines will be tested 10 times to ensure accuracy.

The next goal of SpaceX is to get the rocket to return in a short amount of time and at a low cost.

Monday night elimination on Dancing with the Stars.

Monday night, Donald Trump’s ex wife Marla Maples was eliminated from season 22 of Dancing with the Stars. Maples and her partner Tony Dovolani had a total score of 28 with their waltz to “Part of Your World” from “The Little Mermaid” as a part of Disney night. The elimination of Maples and Dovolani gave relief to “Fuller House” star Jodie Sweetin, who was also unsafe on Monday’s episode.

First Marine Corps dog awarded the Dikin Medal.

Lucca, a German Shepherd, was awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal for animal bravery after losing her leg to an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) in Afghanistan. Lucca is the first dog in the United States Marine Corps to receive this honor. Back in 2012, she found a 30 pound IED and while looking for more a second explosive detonated. Lucca received the medal Tuesday, alongside of her owner, Gunnery Sgt. Christopher Willingham.

Paralyzed man able to move arm thanks to brain implant.

A man paralyzed from the chest down can move his arm just by thinking about it. Ian Burkhart had a implant put in his brain that is able to use his thoughts to pick something up.

The implant in his brain sends a signal down his arm that puts his hand in action. The new advancement is still in its beginning stages.

Burkhart still has to be plugged in for this to be able to work. In the near future they will be able to use this implant without being hooked up to anything thanks to wireless technology.

The Government Development Bank in Puerto Rico was put under a state of emergency.

NEWS 3 Students gather in solidarity against sexual assault Kathleen Ellison Editor-in-Chief kae742@lhup.edu

The HOPE Center hosted it’s annual Take Back the Night rally on Wednesday April 12 on the steps of Price Auditorium.

The event started with a speech from Professor Lisette Schillig, the HOPE Center Director and Advisory Board Chair.

Amanda Freya from Sports Information Center spoke about sports and sexual assault. She said that 1 in 3 assaults are committed by athletes, and how so often schools seem more concerned with win-loss records than the safety of students. She described how athletes can be good role models, but they are public figures who must face accountability.

Amy Downes from the Social Work and Clinical Mental Health Counseling department spoke of the survivors she helped and how sexual assault “permeates our culture, nobody is immune.”

Some students shared there own experiences with sexual assault. One student explained the extra hardships for members of the LGBTQIA community. They explained that many will often be targeted for their lifestyles or not come forward for fear of being outed.

Meghan Mausteller spoke of the new “Yes Means Yes” policy and asked the chilling question “What are we doing?

We need to make sure those words mean something.”

There are the occasional incidents of cheating in high school where if a student gets caught, they will either get a warning or detention. College, though, is a different story.

It is much more serious.

According to standford.edu, “Academic cheating is defined as representing someone else’s work as your own. It can take many forms, including sharing another’s work, purchasing a term paper or test questions in advance, or paying another to do the work for you.”

College is where one prepares him or herself for the real world. Everything a student does during this time will be reflective of their work ethic.

According to LHU’s student handbook, “An act of academic dishonesty involves fraud, deceit, or misrepresentation in attempting to obtain academic credit or influence the grading process by means unauthorized by the course instructor or inconsistent with university policy.“ The university has six different sanctions for a student who is caught cheating: grade penalty, grade reduction, imposition of a failing ‘E’ grade, official reprimand, suspension and dismissal. LHU takes academic dishonesty seriously.

There is a lot more pressure that goes into getting good grades in college than in high school. During high school, the only pressures students have are their parents and peers.

Once college starts, they have their future weighing on them.

Greg Keller, a junior studying communication, said “People resort to cheating because college is a high pressure situation and they want to get the good grades so they can get into graduate school or get the job they want.

I don’t condone cheating, but I see where the pressure comes from.”

Sometimes students don’t even know they are cheating. Academic dishonesty comes in different forms. These are some of the more common ones.

Scantron sheet during a test (wandering eyes) Having notes written on your hand, on the desk or anywhere someone wouldn’t think to look Using your phone during an exam to surf the web, text, use an app, etc.

The list goes on and on.

On top of five or six classes, students have a lot on their plates; staying involved in clubs, maintaining friendships or relationships, possibly having a job and making sure everything back home is okay. It is understandable that a homework assignment or preparing for a test might slip through the cracks. However, it is better to get a zero, or at least try, rather than cheat and risk getting kicked out of school.

Concert Conundrums: Fetty Wap or Zoo Gang?

A&E Editor mej102@lhup.edu Lock Haven University held its annual Spring Concert on Sunday, April 10. The headliner of the show, Fetty Wap, made sure the tickets sold out in the same week they went on sale. But did he live up to Lock Haven’s expectations?

Despite not being my kind of music, I decided to attend my last Lock Haven Spring Concert before I graduated. After waiting in the cold, security let us in half an hour early. Of course, everyone excitedly rushed up to the front. I was one of the lucky concert goers who got to be right against the barrier.

At 7 p.m, the opening act, Zoo Gang, started their performance. They experienced some technical issues at first and the stage hands were still setting everything up, but only five minutes into the performance, everything was fixed and it took off. The lead of the group was full of energy. He was all over the stage, dancing and entertaining the crowd.

Especially when he started performing covers and getting the crowd to sing along to a small part of Adele’s “Hello.”

The cons of the performance centered mainly around cell phones. The group had two or three people on stage the entire time, using their phones to record the performance for SnapChat.

Another con was their female performer. She sounded strange, almost like she was 12 years old and trying to sing too high.

After their hour long performance, they continued performing for the half hour it took to set up the stage for Fetty Wap. Finally, he stepped up and began his performance.

And then . . . it was over. Don’t get me wrong, Wap’s set was interesting.

He told us he injured his leg, but he was still going to give us a show, and he did.

He didn’t dance quite like Zoo Gang, but he was still all over the stage. However, it was hard to understand his lyrics and, compared to Zoo Gang’s hour, he only performed for half an hour.

Not only that, but Zoo Gang’s two main members were on stage performing with him, and they gave out CDs for Zoo Group’s newest album! Sure, most of the songs featured Fetty Wap, but still! During his set? Really?

Around 9:05 p.m., Fetty Wap left the stage at the end of his set. However, Zoo Gang didn’t. Their DJ took the booth back over, and the lead members came to the space between the stage and the barrier to talk to the audience. They even performed more as we were leaving!

Overall, the sound and showmanship were good for Zoo Gang, despite having their cell phones out the entire time. I’d give them a 4 out of 5 eagles.

The sound and showmanship were just mediocre for Fetty Wap. I’d give him a 3 out of 5 eagles. Zoo Gang outshined and outplayed the main act, and I couldn’t help but wonder – who did I really just see in concert?

Lock Haven University brought to us one of the fiercest days of the year with its annual Drag Show, Friday, April 8. The show was put on by the Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club.

Hosted by Carrie Oakey (get it?), The Drag Show featured some of the most divine divas I have ever encountered. Hailing from State College, PA; their performances included lip syncing and dance Lock Haven University brought to us one of the fiercest days of the year with its annual Drag Show, Friday, April 8. The show was put on by the Gender and Sexuality Alliance Club.

Hosted by Carrie Oakey (get it?), The Drag Show featured some of the most divine divas I have ever encountered. Hailing from State College, PA; their performances included lip syncing and dance step routines to the hit singles such as “Burnin’ Up” by Jessie J, performed by Illana Van Peters.

The contestants twirled, cat walked, and even death dropped for the title of Miss Lock Haven, but unfortunately only one could bring home the title. After the last act “Bang Bang,” performed by C.I.A, Carrie Oakey was crowned the victor.

However, that was not the only victory won that night. With the help of the members form G.S.A, Lock Haven was able to raise $480 to donate to the LGBTQ Youth Center in Philadelphia.

Before the divas could pack up and leave for another year, I decided to ask them a few questions about their experiences in the life of drag. The first diva I questioned was Ivanna Coxxx, and she described what drag meant to her. “Drag is whatever you want it to be,” she said. Coxxx also recommended that drag be used as a tool to get things off of your chest.

After Coxxx’s insightful response, I was able to chase down Anja Dixon for a quote as well. She told me the reason she participates in drag is because of her “Drag Mother.” Dixon also really enjoys participating because

the energy from the crowd makes her feel good.

20 photos and 15 minutes later, I was finally able to get a quote from Miss Lock Haven herself, Carey Oakey. For anyone wanting to channel their inner diva, or even participate in drag, Oakey recommended that you “just do whatever makes you happy.”

Oakey believes that drag is an expression and should be expressed however a person wants.

These were really inspirational quotes from such exceptional individuals. This only proves that these ladies not only have the looks and the talents, but the brains as well. The show was nothing short of amazing, and I couldn’t have asked for better entertainment.

It also warms my heart that Lock haven University donated money to the Attic, a place of great significance to me, since many years ago I used to attend meetings there. I encourage all students and even staff members to go to the next show and see these divas in action. I rate this experience a five out of five eagles.

University Players put on a performance of Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” a comedy written in 1786 about the events around the adventures of four lovers.

The LHU students who performed in the play were Julia Jackson, Alex Jones, Melanie Pratt, Shaun Donohue, Grace Monroe, Maxi Estrada, Karlita McCarty, Stuart Harsch, Rachel Marra, Mia Mormando, Ronerlie Noel, Mary Beth Ruggiero, Judeaa Wright and Tyler Shertzer.

A huge congratulation goes out to the entire cast for putting together the play because as we know Shakespeare is not that easy to understand, let alone to perform.

Personally though, the show was a bit confusing and a little bit of a let down. This isn’t my first time at the “Midsummer’s” rodeo, but there were a few details added in the show that threw me off.

The first one being the costumes of Demetrius (Donohue), Lysander (Estrada), Hermia (McCarty) and Helena (Monroe). They were wearing almost “preppy” school kid clothing. In the past, the shows I have seen have always had ancient Greece costumes, like togas, since the play is set in Athens, Greece.

More specifically, Helena’s skirt was way too short and it was almost distracting for the audience. One thing you need to remember is that the audience is not seeing everything from the level you are standing; we are looking up at you.

Something else that really threw me for a loop was the iPad that Lysander used. I wasn’t really sure if the iPad was being used as a map or what, but I wasn’t very fond of it.

I don’t know if the way they approached the play was more modern, but I felt like during the whole show they jumped from modern to something else that I can’t put my finger on.

As for the set, I felt that it was very wellconstructed. The trees and the bushes for the forest scenes looked very realistic and added a different dimension to the scene. I thought the light-up moon was a nice touch as well!

Due to having a small cast and crew, everyone had to pitch in with transitioning scenes as long transitions are expected. I felt like the entire cast and crew did a great job at keeping a

nice flow throughout the entire show with lighting and props.

Now for the acting. I always look forward to a show here at LHU that has Stuart Harsch in it. He really puts his all into every part that he plays and he doesn’t disappoint.

The scene where Bottom and his crew of craftsmen -- Peter Quince, Francis Flute, Robin Starveling and Snug -- perform a small play for Hippolyta and Theseus was absolutely hilarious. Harsch did a wonderful job at stabbing himself and “dying.” It had me in tears!

As I stated before, the University Players did a good job at performing this play as any Shakespeare play is a challenge. There were just some things that really confused me and threw the play off the tracks. Maybe there was something that they were trying to portray and hoped the audience would understand it. Either way, the cast put their all into it and seemed very dedicated to their roles. Being generous due to the difficulty of the play, I give it a 3 out of 5 eagles.

Helping your friend with anxiety: Some helpful tips Kiersten Beecher Staff Writer klb8371@lhup.edu

People can argue day in and day out about whether anxiety is a real disorder or not, but for someone suffering from anxiety, there is no question of it being real. It can be hard to understand anxiety if you aren’t going through it yourself. It is also hard to see a friend going through anxiety and not know how you can help them. Anxiety is more than just getting nervous before you have to get up and give a presentation in front of the class--that’s a part of life and it affects almost everyone.

The Mayo Clinic defines anxiety as persistent and excessive anxiety and worry about everyday activities and events. The worry is out of proportion to the actual circumstance and is difficult to control. The anxiety can even affect how you feel physically. There are several different types of anxiety all with different symptoms and they all come with their own varying level of intensity. Keeping that in mind, there are some things you can do to help your friend no matter what form of anxiety they have 1) Do not tell them that it’s all in their head. Even if it is in their head, it is not going to help them; it might even be the worst thing you could do. It can be almost impossible to calm down based on this logic alone.

Their reaction can be caused by chemicals in their brain, and just telling them that it’s in their head will not help.

2) Don’t push your friend to do something they tell you they aren’t comfortable with. It can be easy to tell your friend “Just step outside of their comfort zone,” maybe it is that simple for you but for someone with anxiety, stepping outside their comfort zone is like jumping off a cliff. If they feel like

they can’t handle something, the best thing you can do is be supportive and try to come up with another option.

3) It can also be helpful to find out what triggers your friend’s anxiety. They might not be able to tell you what their triggers are but if you watch them, you should be able to notice what causes their anxiety attacks.

Recognizing your friend’s triggers and getting them out of a situation that could be a potential disaster is something your friend will be eternally grateful for.

4) Try to be as patient as you can with them. It can be easy to get frustrated with your friend because you don’t see the situation the same as they do. To you, the situation that caused your friend’s anxiety attack may be cut and dry and easy to figure out a solution to, but when you have anxiety it’s not that simple.

5) One of the best things you can do is to reassure them that you care about them.

When you have anxiety, it can be easy to feel like you are being a burden to your friends and that you aren’t normal. Your friend needs to hear that you are there for them, that they aren’t annoying you and that you are still your friend. You should probably say that to all your friends, but your friends with anxiety will really appreciate it.

Sometimes being a good friend is all you can do. Being caring and supportive is what your friend needs; it will mean the world to them.

Have you ever been in the mood for a particular type of food or entertainment, but were in an unfamiliar area? Do you ever get tired of the same routine and want to try new experiences, but don’t know where to start? If this sounds anything like you, you may want to try out Foursquare, an app that recommends places that fit your personal interests.

After installing the app, a survey is taken to see what things may interest you. Once it has your interests as well as location, the app can find local establishments that best match your preferences.

With the app installed and time on my hands, I wanted to try out Foursquare and see if it were as helpful as it had appeared.

One of the things I searched for was “espresso,” and the first of locations to appear was Avenue 209. It gave me a proximity of the stores location, an estimate for expenses and it even gave the store a rating out of ten; the store’s rating is an 8.9 if you were wondering.

Among the cool functions that Foursquare displays, there are others that the app contains such as having a comment section where fellow Foursquare users share their opinions and recommendations as well as experiences at any of the local businesses that you may be interested in. The app also has an optional notification system where it notifies you of spots that fit other preferences that you have yet to search for. This function is perfect for anyone who travels around and is constantly looking for places that can give them a little comfort.

This app is a must-have, especially for those who love to try new things and explore new places while staying on budget.

Name: Shane Salinas Year: Freshman Major: Undeclared This week on “Amanda awkwardly interrupts someone’s lunch,” I got to know Shane, a freshman who is still unsure about the future, like we all were in our freshman year. Even though he hasn’t declared a major yet, Shane is thinking about getting a degree in criminal justice and one day hopes to become an officer for the Pennsylvania State Police.

Like many freshmen, he hasn’t found the group or club yet where you can do something you love with other students like you.

Shane’s a commuter, so it’s understandable that it’s more of a nuisance to join a club because you have to stay on campus longer.

But because Shane isn’t in a club yet, he spends a lot of his time at the library or at the PUB playing pool.

When he’s not on campus, Shane spends his time detailing, washing and waxing cars. It’s his job and he’s good at it. He also says it pays well. Finding a car to detail

is what he would do on a day off so he could make a few extra bucks.

Shane spends his free time riding ATVs and spending his time outside. He goes to camp in a log cabin a lot where there are a lot of ATV trails and places for him to mountain bike. Shane can relax at the cabin and he likes spending time there.

If Shane had a million dollars, he would be sensible with it and not go on a crazy spending spree.

He would help pay off any debt his family has, pay through college and invest the rest to collect on interest. This is a shining example of his nice, trustworthy, honest and dependable personality.

His ideal vacation would be to go to a beach in a different country, maybe even visit as many of the most interesting beaches around the world that he can.

Here, his unusual hair can shine.

His hair is actually two different colors split down the middle. Half of it is blonde and the other half is brunette. It’s more visible in the sunlight so the beach is the perfect place to show off this cool.

As a freshman, Shane might not have it all planned out, but he does know that he wants a future in which he graduates on time, gets a job and has a successful, good life.

‘Vagina’ is not a dirty word Meghan Mausteller Staff Writer mlm6713@lhup.edu

I vaguely remember sex education class in middle and high school. I recall filling out diagrams of male and female reproductive organs. We labeled the vas deferens, scrotum, epididymis, testicles and penis for males. On females, we labeled the vaginal canal, cervix, uterus, ovaries and fallopian tubes.

But I do not remember much more than that.

I can understand why. On male bodies, it’s easy to find the penis and scrotum. By the time they have sex-ed in at twelve, thirteen, or fourteen years old, male students are already well acquainted with what the penis is, but I do not think the same rule applies to female students.

Even though I passed sex-ed with an “A”, I still had no idea what my own body looked like. I was never even told to fill out a diagram of external female genitals. Instead, I ambiguously labeled everything between my legs as my “vagina” and left it at that.

At 13, if I had been asked to label my clitoris, urethral opening, labium majus, labium minus and vaginal opening, I could not have done so.

In fact, I probably could not have labeled anything until I started college and I would not be surprised if students graduate college still oblivious about their own anatomy.

So when we leave room for this much mystery to surround the female body, is it truly surprising that people feel uncomfortable discussing female anatomy?

Should we be surprised when people use cutesy pet names like “peach,” “girly

bits” and “lady garden” to describe the vulva?

Is it far-fetched to believe that women are embarrassed to openly carry tampons and pads to the bathroom during menstruation, or even that women are too embarrassed to say the words “tampon” and “pad”?

Is it shocking that a female student cannot say “vagina” in class without dissolving into a fit of giggles, or that

their body parts, but they should also know what their bodies look like. Although it seems like something out of a Judy Bloom novel, young women could benefit from putting a mirror between their knees and finally looking at their own bodies.

College is a time when students experiment with and learn about sex and sexuality, but how can a person expect to experience sexual pleasure without

We should not be surprised that young women shy away from masturbation, or that a significant portion of women report never experiencing an orgasm.

As a culture, we must work to remove the stigma surrounding female reproductive organs and we can start by taking the time to educate ourselves and learn about our own bodies. Women should not only learn the names of

knowing what their bodies even look like? Shouldn’t we consider it strange that, for many women, they know less about what their vagina looks like than their partner does?

There is no reason for a woman to be disgusted or embarrassed by her own body, and we cannot claim to love ourselves until we love every part of it.

“Vagina” is not a dirty word, and the vagina is not a dirty body part. As a young, sex-positive generation, we have the power to remove the stigma that surrounds female reproductive organs, but before we can change the culture, we must change our own mindset.

You want to know something worse than tax season? Periods.

I will never understand why some people think that those who have vaginas are lying about their periods. Why would we lie about blood and pain? Why would we lie about something that almost every single person with a vagina is going to experience or is experiencing? Do they think it’s just a fun game and that we just pretend it sucks? Or maybe they think we’re all just exaggerating because “women love drama.” Either way, let’s make one thing explicitly clear: periods suck!

There is nothing better than waking up in the morning and finding out that while you were sleeping, your body was bleeding. And there is nothing better than having to pretend that everything is fine and normal, when your uterus is practicing for giving birth. And there is definitely nothing better than when you’re feeling miserable and in pain, and someone comes up to you and tells you to “quit exaggerating.”

Women are strong as hell because they go about their days charging through a sea of red, and still get all of their work done. But you know what, they shouldn’t have to. I’m not saying that for a week every month women should just sit and do nothing, but getting your period isn’t considered a “valid excuse” to miss class or miss work, and unless you have an understanding professor or boss, good luck trying to go home.

(Shout out to all of the wonderful humans out there that understand

what women go through don’t expect them to “suck it up and deal with it.”)

What I don’t understand is how being sick is a valid excuse but getting your period isn’t.

When someone gets their period, they can feel a multitude of ways. They can experience painful cramps, bloating, headaches, aches and pains throughout their body, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, etc. Each of those symptoms individually would be reason enough for someone to call off of work or email their professor saying they’ll be missing class, but because they’re associated with one’s period, suddenly those reasons are no longer plausible.

I say “bull”. I know people who experience such painful cramps that they are literally rendered immobile. I know people who throw up for hours when their period starts. I know people who get migraines that are so intense they become dizzy and have to lay down or else they’ll pass out.

And yet they are still expected to “shake it off” and keep going.

Of course, not everyone’s periods are this bad, but some months may be worse than others and we should all be aware of that. And no, not every person is going to know exactly when their period is going to start. Our bodies are temperamental and like to change things up on us. Twentyeight days might not be exact for every person and it can vary month by month.

Essentially, what I’m getting at is that if someone needs time off because of their period, it’s a valid excuse and they don’t need to explain themselves to you or anyone.

Softball sweeps DH with Clarion Jayson Moyer

The Lock Haven University softball team kept their winning ways rolling with a sweep of Clarion on Saturday at Lawrence Field.

The Bald Eagles won both games 8-0, each in five innings, behind strong offensive

In game one, Lock haven scored six runs in the bottom of the second inning that started with a triple from Jodi Weaknecht, who would score on a wild pitch to put Lock Haven up 1-0. Back to back singles, a fly out and a walk loaded the bases for freshman Jessica Strouse, who singled to make it 2-0.

Strouse’s fellow freshman Faith Ceely followed with a groundout, scoring Becca Caputo. McKenna Garlock singled to score Paige Stuppy, advancing to second on an er-

ror, which also allowed Strouse to score.

For good measure in the bottom of the second, Michelle Holweger doubled to center to cap off the scoring in the second with Lock Haven leading 6-0.

Freshman Bekah Slattery cruised on the mound, picking up her 12th win of the season, throwing all five innings, allowing three hits, striking out eight and walking none. It was Slattery’s fifth start without allowing a walk this season, and also her fourth shutout.

The Bald Eagles ended the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run single from Stuppy as they went onto win 8-0 in game one, having a total of 11 hits.

Game two saw the same result, but Lock Haven went out and scored all of their runs in the first three innings.

Strouse led off the bottom of the first with a single, Ceely reached on an error and then Holweger hit another two-run double, this time to right field, putting the Bald Eagles up 2-0. Weaknecht drew a walk, Holweger and Weaknecht advanced on passed balls and Gabrielle Henson capped off the threerun inning with an RBI single.

Lock Haven tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the second, led off by a single from Strouse who then advanced to second on a fielder’s choice and later stole third.

Garlock also reached on a fielder’s choice and stole second. Holweger followed with an two-run single up the middle, giving her four RBI’s in the first two innings.

Weaknecht doubled to center, Holweger

advanced to third and Rachel Mouillesseaux hit a single to center scoring both Holweger and Weaknecht.

The Bald Eagles led 7-0 after two innings.

In the bottom of the third, Holweger struck again, singling to left, scoring Ceely and giving her five RBI’s on the day. Holweger’s five RBI’s are a season high.

Mouillesseaux matched Slattery’s performance in game one on the mound, throwing a one-hit, five-inning shutout while fanning three for her 11th win of the season.

Lock Haven is on the road for the next week with PSAC doubleheaders at PittJohnstown and Mansfield. They will play a non-conference doubleheader at Shepherd in Sherpherdstown, WV on April 18 before returning to Lawrence Field to host a doubleheader against Bloomsburg on April 22.

Thank you to the man who brought Philly hockey Jayson Moyer

Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu Waking up to a string of text messages and alerts of someone dying is not the best way to wake up. Flyers founder and owner Ed Snider died early Monday morning at age 83 after a two-year battle with cancer.

Reading those texts and alerts of Snider’s passing put my day in a depressed state before I even stepped one foot out of my bed. I knew Snider had been battling cancer, but I didn’t realize it had been this bad.

I spent a good chunk of Monday reflecting on the Flyers in my lifetime and reading stories about Snider and hearing current and former players spill out kind word after kind word about a man they called, “Mr. Snider.”

With Snider passing away, it spun my mind into a whole cognitive swirl about my emotional connection to the sports teams I love. The emotional passion I have for my favorite teams, especially Duke, the Eagles, and the Flyers goes beyond just wanting them to win. It is what keeps me sane and motivated. It is what gives me joy that goes through the roof, and it is what brings me to tears. And all of it is totally justified.

When you look at the Philadelphia sports landscape, one thing that drives me more nuts than anything is poor ownership. It is exhibited in arguably all four professional teams in Philadelphia, and that can’t happen in a major market. But Snider stands above all of them.

First and foremost, I believe the top priority of an owner of a sports franchise is to care about what the fans think. Snider did just that. The urgency to win was always there as well, and while I did not agree at all with the way he went about it, Snider always had a hunger and thirst for winning.

Jeffrey Lurie does not have that same thirst.

The urgency to win has never been there. He does not connect with the fans. Frankly, I think he is a weak owner who doesn’t know what he is doing. Example: Chip. Howie. “Holding people accountable for moves.” Its childish the way the Eagles can be run at times.

Josh Harris treats the Sixers like a novelty and it drives me nuts. Additionally, he clearly has never taken a public speaking class in his life. And with the Phillies, I have no idea.

While Snider wasn’t out in the public shaking hands with fans, his presence was always felt. He has created an emotional attachment with me far greater than I have with the Eagles, Phillies, and the Sixers – and I am insanely emotional with the Eagles.

It was simply the fact that he was trying to win. Doing it in a way that hurts the franchise is out of the question when it comes to looking back on Snider’s legacy. He wanted to win, and he cared more than anyone.

It really hit me laying here in my bed Monday night that if not for Snider, the Flyers that we know and love today would not be here. That thought is what prompted me to write this article. Days like Monday take the emotional attachment to a sports team to the next level.

I rehashed every single Flyers memory I have in my lifetime. The run to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2003-04 against the Lightning was so exciting, even as a third or fourth grader. Keith Primeau’s goal in the third period to tie the game in game six followed by Simon Gagne’s overtime winner to send it to game seven. Jeremy Roenick’s game winner in triple overtime against the Leafs in the playoffs. The run to the Cup in 2010. The come from behind series against the Bruins. Claude Giroux’s game winner in game three of the Finals. I remember watching all of it and more. And it’s obvious that a big part of my love for the Flyers has been generated from Snider.

So I want to thank Ed Snider for making the organization that I love and deeply care about for making it what it is today. Ed Snider is the man who brought me and thousands of others hockey.

Philadelphia has lost one incredible person.

“The emotional passion I have for my favorite teams goes beyond just wanting them to win. It is what keeps me sane and motivated. It is what gives me joy and what brings me to tears. And it is totally justified.” with a better boss in his two years as general manager of the Flyers. Hundreds of tweets and statements poured out offering condolences to Snider. Philadelphia mourned the loss of Snider today in a way that he would have despised.

Do you think that this same thing happens when Jeffrey Lurie passes away? I certainly don’t. That’s not a knock on Lurie’ it’s the sheer fact that he doesn’t connect with the fans of the most popular team in Philadelphia.

I look at the Flyers fanbase more like a club.

It is a tightly knit unit with an orange band around it. The support for the team during bad times will always be there. 19,000 plus people will be at each game.

And most Flyers fans will be on board with every move the organization makes. They will be on board because the Flyers really have not had a long period bad hockey in their entire existence.

And that’s why we are so happy they are in the playoffs. One year without playoff hockey is horrible.

Snider brought hockey to Philadelphia in 1967. He shook each player’s hands after each game he was at, win or loss.

Lacrosse slips by Bloom Jayson Moyer

Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu Heading into Tuesday’s PSAC lacrosse game against Bloomsburg, Lock Haven was down 12 players. Five of those 12 have had their names regularly penciled into the starting lineup.

Lock Haven had other ideas as they defeated Bloomsburg 10-9, moving to 11-2 overall on the season and 7-2 in the PSAC, Jenna Dingler put Lock Haven on the board first, scoring her ninth goal of the year seven minutes into the first half. Hope Thomas picked up her first assist of the year on Dingler’s goal.

“Everyone was well prepared,” Dingler said.

“People were put in positions that they don’t normally play but were studying the roles of those players and still gave it their all.”

Rachel Engler followed up Dingler’s goal with her 40th of the season two minutes later.

Lock Haven’s defense was the story for over 15 minutes in the first half. After a turnover by goalkeeper Hannah Houde, Nikki Fisher tied the game at one with 11:22 to go in the first half following an extended offensive possession for Bloom.

“I think they played a huge role,” Shannon Bissnette said of the defense. “In the end, we weren’t really getting the draws, so it was a lot

of defense. They held them and really worked together even though they all aren’t use to being on the field together.”

Hope Thomas came right back three minutes later, scoring on a free possession and pushing Lock Haven’s lead back to two, and Emily Brunie scored her second of the year less than a minute later to make it 4-1 Bald Eagles.

Engler scored her second of the game on a perfect setup from Shannon Bissnette, as it was

Freshman Kate Hooper, making her first career start, set Thomas up beautifully for her second of the game with near two minutes left in the first half, putting Lock Haven up 6-1.

On a beautiful crease roll, Bissnette scored her ninth of the season, extending Lock Haven’s lead to 7-1 with 38 seconds to go in the first half.

Hannah Jaskuta scored her 16th of the season with three seconds to go in the first half, cutting their deficit to five going into halftime of a first half that Lock Haven dominated.

Lock Haven started off the second half quickly, as Dingler scored her second of the game on another brilliant feed from Bissnette.

The Bald Eagles had given up a combined 21 goals in the second half of their previous four games. After Dingler scored early in the second half, Bloomsburg struck for three quick goals to cut Lock Haven’s lead to three with just under 23 minutes to play.

Dingler scored her second of the half, the third of the game, making it 9-6 Bald Eagles. It was Dingler’s second hat trick of the season, and Bissnette had yet another assist.

Bloomsburg scored three goals in the final minutes, including two in the last minute, but they weren’t enough as Lock Haven pulled out win.

Lock Haven will return to action on Saturday when they host Gannon at 12p.m. at Charlotte Smith Field.

“We had zero subs and we weren’t used to that,” said Engler. “We had people playing midfield, people coming down on attack that weren’t used to that. The chemistry still was there, but in a different way. We all worked together as a team.”
