New club on campus aims to bring awareness to grieving college students Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu Actively Moving Forward is a new club here on campus to help support students who are grieving the illness or death of a loved one while going to classes.

AMF is not just a LHU feature, it is a national support network for college students living their daily lives, dealing with the death of a loved one.

Pre-PA Graduate, Emily Nehme who lost her grandfather and wanted a place where she didn’t feel alone started the club last year hoping in the near future it would get approved, which it did in May of 2015.

With the waiting list of students at the counseling services here on campus, Ashleigh Brass, a sophomore studying early childhood education, and Kaitlyn Keck, a senior studying pre-physician assistant, who are the current co-presidents of AMF, would like students to know that there is another place to go and talk.

“I wish I had something that showed me that you aren’t alone and here are 10 other people who know what you’re going through,” said Brass. “I want students here to know that we have that now and it’s new!”

During the meetings, grief isn’t the only thing that is talked about, they talk about triggers, balancing life after losing a loved one, stresses, milestones, holidays and much more. All of these become harder to deal with after losing a loved one and it helps to talk to other people and how they deal with them.

Keck said “We don’t give advice, we are there to support one another and listen” Their goal as a group is to not tell others what to do, but instead give them guidance so they can figure out what they need to do to grieve and to be there to listen.

One of the biggest topics that they talk about during their meetings is suicide; many students have either lost someone, or have thought about committing it. AMF is planning on having a suicide prevention walk to support the students and their members who are going through this.

Along with the prevention walk, they hope to have a memorial Christmas tree during the holidays so that anyone’s loved one can be remembered. They are also doing these as service projects to raise awareness of grieving college students.

Students want to feel safe when expressing such personal parts of their lives and that is what Ashleigh and Kaitlyn hope to bring to LHU. “We’re not a club where if you don’t show up to three meetings, you’re out of the club.

Every meeting is different and you can come and go as you please. “ said Keck “We didn’t choose to be grieving while going through college, so hopefully this club can give students an hour to just cry it out and then go back to writing their paper.” said Brass.

AMF meets every other Tuesday at 6:30 P.M. in Raub 206, be sure to go to their next meeting on October 20!

First democratic debate takes place Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu The first Democratic Debate took place in Las Vegas Tues. night and featured former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont, Governor Martin O’Malley of Maryland, former senator Jim Webb of Virginia and former governor Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island. The position of the five candidates on the stage at the CNN Facebook Democratic Debate was based on polls since Aug. 1 with Clinton in the center.

Hillary Clinton was strong on the debate stage asking the American people to help her succeed the man who took the presidential nomination away from her seven years ago. As an answer to whether she is a progressive or a moderate, Hillary responded with “I’m a progressive, but I’m a progressive that likes to get things done.”

Bernie Sanders, standing to her right, made emphatic calls for political revolution, citing the way that candidates raise money as a major contributor to misrepresentation in Washington. Required reports to the Federal Election Commission in July 2015 showed a total of $15.2 million in donations to the Sanders campaign with an average donation of $31.30. Sanders has called for an overturn of Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission which spawned the creation of Super PACS. Sanders promised to explain Democratic socialism to America, and attempted to do so using Nordic countries as an example. He was cut off by the moderator (Anderson Cooper) and Clinton who said “Stick to America.” On the issue of immigration, Bernie Sanders was prompted to explain some history.

Specifically, why he opposed the attempt at immigration reform in 2007. He made no secret about his opposition to the immigration effort in 2007.

Education was also discussed and Sanders and Clinton both stressed the importance of an affordable college degree, but disagreed on how much of a student’s tuition should be funded through taxes. Sanders added that Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton taxes on “Wall Street speculation” would fund those degrees.

Clinton supports tuition-free public colleges but her plan would require students with aid to work at least 10 hours a week to help fund their education.

Clinton’s plan would also allow all students with debt to refinance in order to lower interest rates. “My plan would enable anyone to go to a public college or university tuition-free,” she said.

The issue of regulating guns was also in the debate. Candidates talked about their National Rifle Association approval ratings (the higher the approval rating, the more cooperative they have been with legislation that would support the NRA). O’Malley, former mayor of Baltimore, had the most dialogue about gun control.

O’Malley also stated that he is the “only candidate who would move to a clean electric grid by 2050.” This would mean an electricity system Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders generated entirely by zero-carbon sources of power such as wind and solar. All of the candidates reiterated that reform to halt climate change is an important part of their campaign.

The debate was a civil affair with almost no mudslinging. “On this stage, you didn’t hear anyone denigrate women, you didn’t hear anyone make racist comments about new American immigrants, you didn’t hear anyone speak ill of another American because of their religious beliefs,”said O’Malley, acknowledging this point.

One of the more entertaining moments came when Sanders stepped in after Clinton and was asked a question about the email controversy that has been a hindrance to her campaign. She stated that the controversy was designed to be just that by the far-right committee investigating it. Sanders backed her up saying: “The American people are sick and tired of hearing about your damn emails.”

Clinton is to the right of her party on foreign policy and Chafee suggested that her vote to move ahead with the Iraq war in 2008 disqualified her from the White House. She responded saying: “Well, I recall very well being on a debate stage, I think, about 25 times with then Senator Obama, debating this very issue.

After the election, he asked me to become Secretary of State. He valued my judgment, and I spent a lot of time with him.” Sanders called the Iraq war, “the worst foreign policy blunder in the history of this country.” And he said he doesn’t want a repeat in Syria, where “you’re talking about a quagmire in a quagmire.”

Sanders and O’Malley both hit Clinton for advocating a no-fly zone in during the refugee crisis. O’Malley said it was a “military tool he wouldn’t use.”

Clinton countered by saying that she advocates the U.S. taking a stronger role in ending the civil war in Syria, and specifically to stop Russia and Vladimir Putin’s influence.

“I think it’s important too that the United States make it very clear to Putin that it’s not acceptable for him to be in Syria creating more chaos, bombing people on behalf of Assad, and we can’t do that if we don’t take more of a leadership position, which is what I’m advocating,” she said.

Janet Jackson’s new album is ‘Unbreakable’ Sam Shirk A&E Editor sxs1090@lhup.edu

voice with lots of instruments that give her voice the illusion of being much bigger. They really show the listener just what a small but beautiful voice can do.

On Oct. 2nd, Janet Jackson released her long awaited eleventh studio album “Unbreakable” and it did not disappoint.

Jackson delivers a lengthy and steamy adult R&B album that really shows off her virtue as a singer. No track was really like the other and each song smoothly transitioned into the next one, giving us a pleasurable journey all throughout.

There are quite a few gems on this 17-track album to look forward to. The title track “Unbreakable”, “The Great Forever” , “Shoulda Known Better,” “After You Fall” , “Broken Hearts Heal”, “Night,”2 B Loved” and, of course, the popular single “No Sleeep.”

“Unbreakable” is a soothing R&B tune that slowly picks up in pace and include a high-chorus.

A beautiful showcase of Jackson’s amazing but soft voice. This is only one point where Jackson shows us what her voice can do.

“The Great Forever” has a very strong Michael Jackson vibe throughout it, in fact, MJ’s soul is felt throughout various tracks on the album. During “The Great Forever” Jackson bends and chokes notes as her brother often did. “The Great Forever” is a wonderful pop track with soothing verses and a high energy chorus. It’s so well put together that the song just sucks you in immediately.

“Shoulda Known Better” and “After you Fall” are of the slower range that accent Jackson’s soft

There are a few small differences between these two slower tracks though. “Shoulda Known Better” holds a more uplifting and inspirational edge that varies between slow and fast whereas “After You Fall” is consistently slower. It holds a very faint edge of pain that will cause Jackson to masterfully bring you to tears with her lyrics.

“After You Fall” is brilliantly followed up by

“Broken Hearts Heal” which is a sad but happy tune that’s clearly a tribute to MJ. Some of the lyrics include “It was in summer that you left me/ The fall and winter never felt so cold” and “We can’t laugh together till we cry/But our love’s ain’t no material thing.” Despite it being a tribute song, it still includes a positive and uplifting tone to it.

A staple that seems to be the theme of the entire album.

“Night” and “2 B Loved” are fantastic dance numbers that will have you definitely hoping out of your seat and dancing like nobody’s watching. The music throughout “Night” really accents the dancevibe and “2 B Loved” is similar to how today’s popular tracks sound. These two tracks alone are assured pieces of ear-candy.

“No Sleeep” is similar to some of Jackson’s old music, especially after “The Velvet Rope,” in the sense that it includes a positive-sex message throughout it. The track strongly reminds me of “Any Time, Any Place” and “Go Deep.” It’s a very sensual song through and through. While J-Cole’s lyrics to me felt out of place at first, I felt like they really added to it towards the end of the song.

“Unbreakable” is Jackson’s first new album in seven years, and, after listening to it, I know Ms. Jackson was seriously missing from our music nowadays. I highly recommend this one as it is a fantastic and mature Janet Jackson album.

Jackson is currently on her “Unbreakable” tour for the album and you can purchase this album on iTunes and Amazon or you can get it from your local Wal-Mart or Target.

A ‘Walk in the Woods’ is not your average Appalachian adventure Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu “A Walk in the Woods,” directed by Ken Kwapis, is a Drama film that features two guys wanting to walk the entire Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine. Robert Redford, who plays the role of Bill Bryson, takes his old friend Katz, a role by Nick Nolte, on an incredible journey to possibly being the oldest guys ever to walk the Appalachian Trail in its entirety. The film came out to theaters nationwide in Labor Day. The comedy in this movie will definitely give you a good laugh, but it’s really predictable. This movie is definitely fast-paced because we don’t see a whole lot of the trail. There were some parts in the movie where I could see some great views from the trail. The best part of the movie

was during the end credits when it showed some beautiful sights of the trail. I don’t think the movie shouldn’t have casted a British actor in a movie is based in America. Nick Nolte, however, had a perfect role in the movie because all he wanted to do was to have fun in this movie.

The music in the movie made sense in most of the movie. Whenever there was a time for laughter, there was funny music playing, even when the bears came to play. Then there were some relaxing moments in the movie with peaceful music playing. The costumes in this movie weren’t that accurate because nobody would walk the entire Appalachian Trail with jeans and a sweatshirt, unless if it got cold.

Overall, I would give this movie three out of four stars. It was nice to see the trail and the movie was very funny at times. If you are a fan of traveling or comedy, I strongly urge you to see this movie.

Mary Jones A&E Editor mej102@lhup.edu With midterms upon us, some college students look forward to kicking back and watching television once this week is over. Luckily, fall is the time of the year that TV series and seasons premiere, and October is no exception.

Here are three shows premiering this month, just in time for the end of midterms.

“Da Vinci’s Demons” Airing Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8:00 pm on Starz, the third, and last, season of “Da Vinci’s Demons”. For those who don’t know, “Da Vinci’s Demons”, starring Tom Riley as Leonardo Da Vinci, follows the untold story the artist, in his early years in Renaissance Florence. At age 25, his genius is barely contained and looked down upon by the church. Because of this, he struggles to live within the confines of his own reality turning instead to inventing the future.

If you need to catch up with “Da Vinci’s Demons,” you can find this series on Netflix and Amazon Instant Video.

“Supergirl” In the era of superhero television shows, this new series airs Monday, Oct. 26 at 8:30 on CBS, starring Melissa Benoist as Supergirl. 24 year old Kara Zor-El is the cousin of Superman. After being sent away from Krypton at the age of 12, she was taken in by the Danvers and took the name Kara Danvers. Kara spent years hiding her powers but now she must now learn to embrace them.

“Grimm” Return to the world of the Grimm brothers and fairy tales with the premier of the fifth season of “Grimm” on Friday, Oct. 30 at 9:00 on NBC. For those of you who are new to the series, this show centers around homicide investigator Nick Burkhardt of the Portland Police department as he learns that he is descended from a line of monster hunters known as Grimm’s. He faces wolf-men who prey on women in red, bears who punish home invaders and other creatures, both from fairytales and other myths.

Steam was originally developed

by Valve Corporation as a digital rights management platform for the company’s games. The platform benefits consumers by facilitating efficient and automatic product updates. Another benefit of such online services is that the consumer has access to purchased products without the need to maintain a collection of physical media.

Valve has continued to expand the service by offering a wide variety of third party games. Steam has a few competitors, but at 75 million registered users, it is the industry leader for digitally marketed media for the PC gaming industry. As many retailers no longer dedicate shelf space to boxed PC games, Steam is quickly approaching near monopoly status with its dominant position.

The advantages of digital delivery are realized by the industry as well.

There is no need for publishers to risk

the front-loaded cost of producing physical media that may not sell.

However, not all current trends are beneficial to the consumer. When retail boxes were the norm, games needed to be released in a well tested and bug-free state, because patching was rarely an option. The bad press from the release of poorly optimized software could dampen sales. In the digital era, the rushed release of bugplagued, poorly optimized product has become the industry standard rather than the rare exception.

Steam’s decision to broadly market pre-release product has exacerbated this trend.

Micro-transactions have also become common throughout the industry. In the era of the retail box, a popular title would probably get an expansion pack, which added a substantial amount of new content for a one-time expense. The new trend is to give the consumer a less than complete experience in the release product only to nickel and dime them with a constant stream of small content updates. The cost

of purchasing a complete experience has increased dramatically in many cases. This marketing approach would not have been viable in the pre-digital age.

Digital marketing has also become more prevalent and intrusive, and Steam is also a leader in this trend. Like many online retailers, Steam uses past purchases to make product recommendations. However, the system they employ is not particularly accurate, and there are few options for the consumer to turn off or fine tune the recommendations.

The digital age has brought many advantages to the PC gaming industry, but it has also brought the decline of the relationship between the publisher and the consumer. PC gamers have almost come to expect products to be released unfinished, and with content hidden behind paywalls. Steam is not the only platform responsible for this trend, but they are notable facilitators of it.

The rise of digital content delivery has brought with it the need for a more savvy and demanding consumer.

‘The Martian’: Just another space movie?

Joanna Harlow Online Editor ejh1498@lhup.edu “The Martian” is about a man accidentally stranded on Mars left his own devices which he has quite the inventory. Played by Matt Damon, Mark Watty is a clever botanist, who must “science the shit” out of his situation to survive. He has been abandoned by his shipmates after a space-storm which prompted NASA to call them home.

The movie is typical of its director, Ridley Scott (“Blade Runner”, “Alien”), with sweeping overhead shots of Mars and a mixture of humor and action.

The humor often seems forced or misplaced. The inserts of comic relief stop the film from ever reaching a peak of suspense the viewer needs in order to appreciate the resolution.

Kristin Wiig and Donald Glover inhabit serious roles, but there are scattered one-liners throughout the film. The film’s cast is familiar and you could construct a web of films and shows they have starred in which have adjacent themes. Kate Mara as a spunky, empathetic astronaut, Jeff Daniels as a conflicted but moralistic NASA director and Sean Bean as a passionate and blunt right hand man, all feel played but comfortable choices for the viewer.

Jessica Chastain seems like an especially obvious choice as an astronaut given her recent role in “Interstellar”. Mackenzie Davis has almost the same

role in the movie as she does in the popular AMC show “Halt and Catch Fire” as a rebellious tech-person. But Chiwetel Ejiofor is refreshing as a young and enterprising NASA director.

Like most space films, the movie is a sort of maritime adventure, the connection between the ship-mates provides the main pathos, and the trope of being deserted is the main plot-point. The one difference is the NASA team on Earth, working in conjunction to help Mark back home. Their moral dilemmas (to send the crew back to rescue Mark, to spend all of their money to save one man), at times, resonate more than Mark’s trials which he plows through with the ease of a mythic hero. The movie makes sure the audience is aware of the science Mark is doing by having him keep a video log. It made the acting a little flatter than it would have been if Mark had been nearly silent, like the protagonist in “Cast Away”.

“The Martian” is set just a few decades from now but the attention to future architecture in scenes taking place on Earth is very detailed and not heavy-handed. Where the film falls flat in terms of aesthetics is on Mars.

Besides the birds’-eye shots of the surface of the planet and the detail inside of the man-made station, the environment is neither celebrated as nature and free wilderness nor characterized as an enemy. In fact, Mark interacts very little with his surroundings when he is not doing something technical.

At it’s core, the film is a celebration of human ability. Like “Apollo 13”, “Gravity” and a string of other space films, it’s message is inspirational: that those that persevere against the void will be victorious.

Where In The World: Munich, Germany Raymond Stellhorn Columnist rjs2091@lhup.edu This week, we visit a magnificent city in southern Germany called München or, as we know it, Munich. The largest and capital city in the state of Bavaria features a clash of German tradition in a modernly growing society. With so many different historic sights, beautiful buildings, museums, churches, restaurants, sports, arts and festivals to see and do; one will not get bored in Munich.

What one would imagine as typical traditional German architecture of colorful medieval looking buildings can be found in the city center. Most notably mustsees include the Neus Rathaus (New City Hall), Feldherrenhalle, the Residenz (former residence of the Bavarian kings), Frauenkirche (Famous Church) and the world’s most famous beer hall, the Hofbräuhaus am Platzl. Historically, Munich has been a very powerful and important city over time. Today that influence and reputation is preserved at the City Museum of Munich as well as the National Bavarian Museum.

Munich is also well known for its passion in sport. Located on the outskirts of the City is the Allianz Arena home to world soccer super-power Bayern Munich as well as city rivals 1860 Munich and occasional hosts matches of the World Cup winners, Die Mannschaft (The German National Team). The Olympic games were hosted by the city in 1972, you can re-visit those games today by taking a tour of the Olympic Park which hosts numerous venues from the games in a beautifully maintained green area surrounding a lake overlooked by the OlypmiaTurm, a 955 foot tall observation tower.

The best time of year to visit Bavaria is during Oktoberfest which takes places from the middle of September to the first Sunday of October. Here you find a massive

celebration including traditional music, rides, games and an abundant amount of beer. However, the locals call it Wiesn, the inaugural festival, which was held in 1810 to celebrate the marriage of Prince Ludwig and Princess Therese and then it was repeated at the same time the following year and years to come. About 5.9 million guests from all over

the globe visited this largest fair in the world in 2015. Fun Fact: Over 600 passports were left in the lost and found in during the festival.

Einfach München means Simply Munich, the motto of the city suits itself very well. This extraordinary Bavarian city brings together German tradition and beauty with a vibrant rapidly growing culture that welcomes people from all over the world.

The standard Jack-o-Lantern or ghosts are classics but why not try something new? Carve out something significant to you! Danielle Parowski, a senior Early Education major and a member of the women’s swim team, got creative with her pumpkin this fall. How often do you see someone swimming across a pumpkin?

If you don’t want to carve, there’s always paint. Make your pumpkin into something totally unexpected! With paint, there are no limits!

Once you have your pumpkin, it’s time for a corn maze! When was the last time you got lost in one of these? They’re always a fun time to be had with friends. Here is a maze that is less than and hour away so take a day and explore the maze!

Habitica helping you to ‘gamify your life’ Kathleen Ellison kae742@lhup.edu Editor-in-Chief Are you unorganized? Do you constantly fill notebooks with to-do lists? Do you often daydream that instead of working on homework you’re fighting monsters? Do you like games?

I have the app for you! Habitica is a free productivity app that takes your life and turns it into game while also helping you to better organize your life. This app seriously changed my life.

Habitica does more than just provide you with a place to make a to-do list to check off, in this app, you create a character, fight monsters, raise pets and get gold! Every time you check off an item from your to do list you gain gold, experience and sometimes get drops like quests or eggs which can be hatched into pets to be raised.

What I found really interesting about Habitica is that you don’t just create to-do lists, you can also create “dailies” which are tasks you do everyday. So every time you remember to make your bed you get to go further in the game. You can also create good or bad habits, so if you’re trying to quit drinking soda you can gain gold for every day you go without drinking soda.

If you do a bad habit or miss a daily, you lose health and can even die! But if your productive you can continue to level up and become a wizard, warrior, rogue, healer or mage! They also have cool seasonal outfits to buy for your character, and I am dying to try to get my hands on some bat wings for Halloween.

You can buy weapons, take on challenges, create quest parties with friends or even join guilds if you have specific interest. What I really love about this app though is its gamifying aspect.

You can name tasks whatever you want, so instead of just cleaning my room I’m fighting dirt monsters.

Not only has this app made me more organized and productive, it gets me excited to do tasks that I would normally put off, because hey if I do this I can buy that cool battle axe I’ve been saving up for. Or I can create my own rewards to buy a new movie or a night off.

Study Abroad: Dominican Republic

The people were always so nice and offered to help us in any way they could.

While in Santo Domingo, we stayed at Mamá tingo’s which was a used dorm for the groups that went. If you didn’t know someone, this forced you get to know them quick. We rode a bus to travel. Driving is crazy because it’s a content merge and beeping of your horn.

While abroad, we also got to travel to Las Terrenas which was beautiful.

It had amazing beaches which looked like the pictures on postcards. We were abroad in January which meant we were thrilled to be in the ocean in eighty degree weather while it was negative degrees back in Pennsylvania.

While in Las Terrenas, we were taught how to dance like a true Dominican.

This trip was something most of us thought we would never get the opportunity to do but got the chance because of it being shortterm. Short-term study abroad is an opportunity that changed my life.

When someone mentions studying abroad, you think they spent a semester to a year abroad. We always hear about how amazing the opportunity was and think man I wish I could go. Then we think it costs too much or I won’t graduate on time and decide that we don’t have time and just forget about it. Then we regret never studying abroad because of the excuses we gave ourselves. I know I regretted it because I had heard so much about it. But then I got the opportunity to short term study abroad.

Deciding to do this was one of the best decisions of my life. In 2014 over winter break, me and sixteen other people got our chance to study abroad in the Dominican Republic for ten days. Before going to the DR, I knew maybe three people going, but while there, we made friendships that would last forever.

While there, we were in Santo Domingo where we got to teach students who did not have the best opportunities. The community was nothing like we had ever seen before and had stray dogs running around the community. At night, you would hear our neighbors having parties to celebrate whatever they felt like celebrating.

Hang-gliders, happiness and Hyner Point Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu Many people have posted amazing views from Hyner Point but what is the experience really like? Everyone says that Hyner point is best to visit during the fall because of the many changing leaves that make the view even more spectacular. This I truly believe because even just seeing the mountainsides from campus is a sight to see.

I myself have never been to Hyner Point but Carly Heider, a senior Secondary Education English major, has been there multiple times. Every weekend the weather is nice, Carly

encourages us to go to Hyner Point but homework keeps us in. But one weekend, before the leaves fall, we will definitely put our books down and venture out into nature for some fresh air as should you.

I thought it was a long hike up but Carly assures me that it’s a 30-40 minute drive before you park and make your way over to the lookout. So even if you are tired and lazy like me, you can still enjoy the beautiful mountainous sight.

Why not make a day-trip about it? There are picnic tables and grills there for your use. Why not spend a day outside enjoying a beautiful sight? Even if you’re swamped with homework, bring it, do it outside. Why do you need

to be cooped up inside when sights like this are nearby?

Hyner point is also a popular take-off spot for hang-gliders.

Go out and see the sights while watching people jump out into nothing. Not as terrifying as skydiving but it’s still a cool experience to have or watch people do.

Spend a nice day outside while the leaves are still beautiful and the weather isn’t trying to freeze us solid!

Becoming the fourth wave

I would like to take this moment to formally welcome you to fourth wave feminism.

Like many young people, my introduction to feminism came from the internet. The zines of the 90s transformed into the blogs of the 21st century and, by doing so, feminism expanded its reach to a larger audience than ever before.

The internet allows us to interact with feminists across the world. Before the internet, we may have only talked with other feminists in our city, but now I can reach out to feminists on the other side of the globe.

With this new technology, we have gained new knowledge. We are able to hear other points of view and understand where feminism failed many in the past.

Today’s feminism more readily addresses intersectionality. As a white, cisgender, heterosexual, able-bodied, middle class woman, I understand that I have privileges many people do not. I also know that society tries to hide this information. My experiences and the experiences of most people like me are so normalized that we forget they even exist.

I’m just as guilty as the next white person

of forgetting the ways my race positively influences my life. I’m as guilty as the next able-bodied person of forgetting how difficult it must be to navigate campus in a wheelchair.

As participants in society, we all exist within circles of privilege. On some level, most of us are oppressors and most of us are oppressed.

Fourth wave feminism is more transinclusive than any other wave. “Support your sisters, not just cisters” is a common cry of action. Fourth-wavers recognize that not all women have vaginas. I know that as a woman, I have less privilege than a man, but as a cisgender woman, I have more privilege than a transgender woman.

Although I encounter sexism, I do not face anywhere near the same level of oppression as a transgender woman. Fourth wave feminism forces me to recognize that.

Even though the fourth wave shows us our privilege, it does not want us to be someone else’s knight. It is not my place to save you from society, but I can empower you to save yourself.

Our intersectionalities cause us to experience life differently, but we are all people who deserve to live without oppression and prejudice.

The F word: feminism

Even though it’s technically a societal taboo, most college students curse. We use curse words as adjectives, we use them as exclamations; we use them in almost every single sentence we utter.

Words that are considered “dirty” have become almost ingrained into our language. You can’t walk across campus without hearing someone say f**k or sh** or any other curse word you can think of. It has literally become second nature to most of us, myself included.

So why is it other “dirty” words, other societal taboos, are barely uttered? And if they are uttered, they are either whispered as though the skies will open and strike down the person who said it, or

they are shouted out loud from the highest peaks so as to make sure that it is heard!

Let’s take one of these other “dirty” words and discuss it, shall we? Why don’t we start with feminism. Ooooo! It’s such a scary word, isn’t it?

But it doesn’t have to be.

Society has instilled in us a certain revulsion whenever we hear that word, a certain disgust that we can’t exactly pinpoint.

Many of us have been brought up to understand that the word, feminism, is equivalent to the word man-hater or that it means being sexist towards men (which technically isn’t something that could feasibly happen in our current society but that’s a topic to discuss later), or even that it is equivalent to bra burning women who don’t shave their arm or leg hair because “f**k the man!” But that’s not the case.

Feminism isn’t about hate or hair but sexism,

though, it’s much more than that. It’s about acceptance and tolerance.

It’s about understanding where other people are coming from and acknowledging their experiences. It’s about recognizing that maybe you didn’t get to where you are today just by yourself, that maybe societal expectations and biases had an effect on your life, that maybe you have to work harder than other people to overcome obstacles in your way or that maybe you are privileged.

Feminism is not a dirty word. But instead of simply taking my word for it, research it.

Look into what feminism really means and what the movement stands for instead of letting society and the way we were raised dictate our opinion on something.

My suggestion? Start with “Feminism is for Everybody by Bell Hooks.” It’ll change your life.

Waiting on the world to change Connor Poorman Staff Writer cmp7673@lhup.edu Ted Talks tend to address issues that not many other sources wish to report.

The United Nations met back in September where social progress expert, Michael Green asked: “Can we can end hunger and poverty, halt climate change and achieve gender equality in 15 years? The governments of the world think we can.”

A plan and goal was set up by the U.N. to address all issues in our world today but within a matter of 15 years. A very good and ideological idea, but can we do it?

As Green said: “Shockingly...we maybe actually can. But not with business as usual.”

Green uses the phrase “not with business as usual” quite a lot, but what does he mean by that?

He is emphasizing that we can no longer look at these issues, set up goals and just hope we meet those goals.

In order to meet these goals, the U.N. must advocate the progress of the global goals and then attempt to meet them.

So what are the global goals? There are 17 goals to be met in the next 15 years such as a few of the following: no poverty, zero hunger, good health and well-being, quality education, gender equality, climate action and peace and justice.

Is it possible to accomplish these goals in 15 years? The U.N. completed a goal from back in 1990 which was expected to decrease poverty from 36% in 1990 to 18% in 2015.

We not only met that goal, but we did even better. Poverty is expected to be at its lowest percentage of 12% this year. We may not have

been able to completely get rid of poverty globally, but we’ve made great strides in trying to reduce it.

Perhaps meeting a few of those goals is actually possible and, perhaps, a few of them aren’t able to be met. These are big issues that require a large amount of time to complete. I am skeptical that we can meet them in the allotted time, but I would of course love to see them succeed.

This is a step in the right direction for the world. Knowing that world leaders are attempting to reach these goals is fantastic. A lot of the time, all we see is the world going backwards, never forward.

I encourage you to use Ted Talks as a resource to educate yourself on important news that is not always discussed in mainstream media. Ted Talks often focuses on news in a brighter light which allows us to see the positive progression we are making as a whole.

Halloween—the time of the year when you can dress up as anything you want. The holiday is right around the corner and those of you who still dress up are probably thinking about the costume you want to wear this year.

Unfortunately, it has become a holiday where a lot of women decide they should dress in fewer clothes than they go to bed in.

I’m all for dressing ‘sexy’ to feel good about yourself, but taking a powerful, authoritative figure like a police officer or firefighter and turning those occupations into a ‘sexy’ occupation makes the media right about women.

What I mean is that the media tries to portray women as weak and that women have to dress in a way men find attractive. Men tend to enjoy women in fewer clothing and, when women wear these ‘sexy’ costumes, it feeds into the media portrayal.

Let’s think about this: you can either walk around freezing your butt off and getting negative second glances for dressing as what some would call ‘slutty’ or you can walk around comfortable and getting positive second glances because you look like a strong woman.

I don’t know about you but I would rather walk around in a full police officer costume and make people double-take when I walk by because I portray power not because I’m showing a lot of

skin. I think it is more ‘sexy’ to be seen as powerful than it is to be seen in very little fabric.

Women have it ingrained in their minds that they have to show skin to get attention all because the media has taught us this from a young age.

Media has taught women that the only way to look ‘sexy’ is to dress in less clothing.

Halloween costumes have followed suit and each year less fabric seems to be added to the costumes. Like I stated above, if you want to dress as a ‘sexy’ cop or a ‘sexy’ firefighter by all means do so!

Halloween is all about having fun and being something you aren’t for a day. It is just sad that many girls choose sexiness or ‘sluttiness’ instead of being something that shows them off as important and powerful.

Personally, my birthday is a few days before Halloween so the whole Halloween theme has been done too many times and is getting old. However, on occasion, I still like to dress up and go out with my friends or have a small party to celebrate the holiday.

The moral of my story here is to say to all the girls reading this: you can dress ‘sexy’ whenever you want, any day of the year.

Make Halloween more fun this year by going as something fun or something that makes you feel powerful. I will be dressing up in a Jack Skellington onesie so if you see me, don’t be afraid to say hi!

The Lock Haven University football squad (0-6, 0-3 PSAC) traveled to Shippensburg to take on the always-tough Red Raiders (4-2 overall, 2-1 PSAC) last Saturday. Shippensburg went on to win its 12th straight over Lock Haven with a score 44-34.

The win is Shippensburg’s 50th over the Bald Eagles, which is the most wins for them over any other opponent.

Quarterback Caleb Walton once again had a historic day on the gridiron.

Walton threw for a career-high 370 yards and tied his own record of four touchdown passes.

On the other side of the ball, defensive back Rahjeir Miles-Eubanks finished the game with an astonishing 18 tackles with 14 of them being solo stops. His 18 tackles are the fourth-most ever recorded by a Lock Haven player in a single game. Miles-Eubanks received the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Defensive Player of the Week award for his performance.

It was a busy first quarter for both teams. Shippensburg got on board first with Andrew Smith running the ball for an eight yard touchdown. Lock

Haven came right back two minutes later with a touchdown pass from Walton to Dan Krupko to tie the game. The Red Raiders came back with four minutes left in the first quarter with a 29-yard pass from Ryan Zapoticky which made the score 14-7 after one quarter.

It definitely didn’t seem that way after the second quarter. The Red Raiders exploded with 20 points, making the score 34-14 after the first half.

Walton threw another touchdown pass to Caleb Kephart with 19 seconds left.

The third quarter was rather uneventful much like the East Stroudsburg game. Lock Haven inched closer with a 64-yard touchdown pass to Krupko.

The score was 37-21 in favor of Shippensburg after three quarters.

Shippensburg’s Justin Pyle ran for three yards to increase the lead.

Lock Haven Head Coach, Dave Taynor got his Bald Eagles to rally in the fourth. With 9:43 left in the game, backup quarterback Shaun Jones threw a touchdown pass to David Cook from the 8-yard line. Later, with only 3:44 left, Walton threw his fourth touchdown pass to Krupko. Walton failed on a twopoint conversion attempt which eventually settled the score for Shippensburg.

Lock Haven will play host to Cheyney University this Saturday at the 2015 Homecoming game. Cheyney is currently on a 38-game losing streak.

The game, which kicks off at 2:07 p.m. will be produced by FOX56 Sports Productions and aired live on MYTV WQMY.

Haley Predix (27), the Lewistown, Pa. native, netted her first collegiate goal in the victory over Mansfield.

Three different players scored their first career goal and the Lock Haven University women’s soccer team (3-9-1, 3-8-1 PSAC) shutout visiting Mansfield University (3-8-1, 2-8-1 PSAC), 3-0.

The Bald Eagles offense was sparked by three freshmen, all of whom scored their first career goals for The Haven.

Haley Predix (Lewistown, Pa./Mifflin County), Kara Waskewicz (Harleysville, Pa./Souderton) and Gabby Kishbaugh (Berwick, Pa./ Berwick) netted goals for Lock Haven.

Predix put LHU up 1-0 in the 23rd minute and Waskewicz struck just before minutes before halftime.

LHU dominated Mansfield in the opening 45 minutes and it showed with the 2-0 lead at the break.

Kishbaugh rounded out the scoring in the 88th minute.

Katie Gable (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest), who made just her second start, finished with four saves. The Bald Eagles got a strong defensive effort from a number of players including Alexa Ream (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) and Danielle Mauro (Toms River, N.J./Toms River North).

Lock Haven returns to action on Wednesday, October 21 at noon when the Bald Eagles travel to West Chester.

Family ties bring Whiteman to Lock Haven Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Stephanie Whiteman’s journey to Lock Haven and her field hockey career could have been vastly different if not for one Lock Haven alumna.

That alumna happened to be her cousin who introduced her to the university. “She’s the one that suggested it [Lock Haven] to me and told me to look to play over here since she had a really great experience. That’s how I really found out,” said Whiteman.

Her familial ties have a distinct imprint on her and her career.

The Trinidad and Tobago native, who’s earned the nickname Trini from her friends and teammates, attributed her love for field hockey to both of her parents. “Both my parents play field hockey and since then I was always around the sport. I think it’s kind of in my genes. My dad was actually the first one to show me how to hold a hockey stick. I began playing around my family and then I joined my parents hockey club and I began playing there when I was seven years old,” said Whiteman.

While her father was the one that taught her how to hold a field hockey stick, it was her mother that provided her with an adage to live and play by.

“Play as if it’s your last time because you never know when it’s going to be your last time to play,” said Whiteman.

The passion and knowledge that she has received from her parents has enabled her to have a distinguished field hockey career. In the summer of 2010, she was scouted to play for the Trinidad and Tobago women’s national team and promptly began training. Unfortunately, she was unable to make the team that year, but that would not deter her. She achieved her goal the following summer when she made the team. After three additional years of training, Trinidad and Tobago participated in the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Scotland. “We finished 8th overall, but the fact that we made it to the Commonwealth Games was a big accomplishment for my country being so small,” said Whiteman.

While she undoubtedly enjoys her time with her home country’s national team, she is also very fond of Lock Haven University.

Head coach, Pat Rudy is a very large part of that happiness.

Whiteman had no shortage of kind words for her head coach. “I love coach Rudy.

She is, undeniably, a great coach. She helps inspire us.

Although she can be a little crazy sometimes, she knows what she’s doing and there is always a plan behind her madness.

She always lets us know what to do.

Whenever we have a question she’s always open to hear it and to answer. She’s open to our opinions and suggestions we have about the team and I really like that about her. She’s very approachable,” said Whiteman.

On the field, Whiteman has been a steady defensive presence for her head coach. She is one of four players to play every minute this season. The defense that she is a part of has recorded six shutouts through 15 games this season. The six shutouts is good enough to be sixth among Division I teams.

Their goals-against-average is a mere 0.76 which is second in the nation.

Her play has not gone unnoticed as she was named Atlantic-10 Player of the Week earlier this season. Trini also leads the team with eight of the team’s 10 defensive stops.

Whiteman will undoubtedly have quite a lot to tell her parents, both of which still play in Trinidad and Tobago, that she does not get to see very often. “I go home every break as often as I can; so summer break and winter break. Besides that, we Skype probably once a week,” said Whiteman.

The national motto of Trinidad and Tobago is, “Together we aspire, together we achieve.” Trini has brought some of that culture with her and she is a prime reason why the Lock Haven field hockey team is ranked No. 24 in the nation.
