Prepared or not prepared... ...that is the question Sky Carpenter Staff Writer scarpent@lhup.edu College: an institution of higher learning, especially one providing a general or liberal arts education, usually leading to a bachelor’s degree.

Students spend four plus years, thousands of dollars, hard work, energy, patience, blood, sweat and tears, all for that slim piece of paper sent to mailboxes several months after graduation, right?

While that seemed to have been the idea before, students all knew better, prior to sophomore year, it’s quite appropriate to say that the actual goal of college for most of us is career readiness; we want to leave Lock Haven University with just as job as the next Joe Shmoe graduating from another college roughly 30 miles down the road or any other college across the country for that matter.

While LHU may be considered a nancially blessed” as some surrounding universities, there are still some expectations held by our student body for this school, so that we will receive the preparation that we deserve.

I’ve needed to know in the real world that I’ll credit LHU for. But I had to take a quite a few classes that I haven’t used to date,” said Megan Dash, a communication major who graduated in 2013. “I wish that I would’ve been

able to take more classes that pertained to my degree instead of things like a physics seminar or geometry.”

Knowledge of any given major, along with the various aspects of this major, is typically at the top of the list when it comes to career preparation, but there are clearly other facets needed as well, including internships, networking and everyday workplace skills.

While some majors within the university require students to participate in an internship, thus giving ing an internship or job for students of these majors, some don’t require an internship at all. But with the competitive nature of “the job hunt,” it’s without one.

Every semester, LHU holds a career fair/career development day, giving students the opportunity to meet with prospective employers from job and even networking purposes.

Lock Haven University also boasts its own Center for Career and Professional Development, which is said to help students plan careers and assist with interview assets like resumes and cover letters. While it is unclear what part they play when it comes to internship placement, several students have mentioned that when it comes to constructing a resume, which is in fact one of the most important aspects of a job interview.

LHU does make an effort to

prepare students for future careers or endeavors.

“LHU is preparing me to be a professional. I have already been accepted into a Physician Assistant Program and I believe it is largely because of the reputation of the Health Science Department,” said Stephanie Walizer, a senior who is majoring in health science with a concentration in Pre-Physician Assistant Studies.

“I believe I will be well prepared for grad school because of my education here.”

The answer to whether or not this effort is enough remains unsolved, however, it’s up to students to prepare themselves for a future career.

Take advantage of everything that the university does offer, and build from there. Some students have done so and have their post graduation plans cemented.

“I believe being a student athlete made it hard to get a lot of external experience that is needed to land a job these days. I think the professors are willing to help you, one just has to ask for help,” said Kristen Capretti, an environmental biology major who graduated in 2014. “Preparing for the future is something no one can tell you what’s going to happen but being at Lock Haven for four years has taught me to overcome the fear of the future and also showed me that it is alright to ask for help. Sometimes, it may be hard, but it is totally worth it.”

Have you been thinking there’s nothing to do here on campus?

That’s not the case this October.

Several university groups are holding fundraisers this month to help others here on campus and throughout the community.

Alpha Sigma Tau will hold it’s 31st annual Rock-a-Thon on Friday, October 10 starting at 5 p.m. and going until 5 p.m. Saturday, October 11. They will rock for 24 hours to raise money for their national philanthropy, Pine Mountain Settlement School and for the Clinton County Women’s Center. Alpha Sigma Tau will be located near the carillon.

Sigma Kappa will be holding

H.O.P.E Center introduces Clothesline Project The HOPE Center is planning a Clothesline Project exhibit to be displayed a few days before and during this year’s Domestic Violence Awareness vigil.

Students are invited to design T-shirts Thursday, Oct. 9 in the PUB’s multipurpose room. All of the shirts will be included in the exhibit.

The Clothesline Project is a visual display of shirts, literally hung on a clothesline. Shirts can be decorated in memory of loved ones who were victims or survivors of violence, or to help raise awareness.

“The shirts are really a very moving and very personal form of storytelling,” said. “We all wear T-shirts. T-shirts are worn by everyday people, and it’s everyday people - regardless of backgrounds, income levels, race, ethnicity, age, sex, sexual orientation or religious faith – who can be victims of or witnesses of domestic abuse and sexual violence.”

The organization got its start in the 1990s, formed by a coalition of women’s groups in Massachusetts. One of the women came up with the idea of the clothesline. Those interested in learning more about the project can visit www.clotheslineproject.com.

“It’s such a powerful image, and so evocative of women’s work – of hanging laundry up on the line,” Schillig said.

“I hope many people can make some time… to participate in this powerful way.”

The Domestic Violence Awareness vigil is an annual event held every October to raise awareness for domestic and sexual violence as well as to help victims and survivors through their healing process.

This year’s guest speakers will be Jo Sterner, an educator and activist for the Pennsylvania Coalition Against Domestic Violence (PCADV); Christina Williams, outreach coordinator for the Clinton County Women’s Center; and justice department. Schillig will also be making a few opening remarks as director of the HOPE Center.

Along with multiple speakers, the vigil provides a chance for attendees who may have witnessed or suffered domestic or sexual violence themselves to talk about their experiences.

“The open mic portion is always a powerful, moving and very personal part of our annual vigil,” Schillig said.

“We will always include it.”

Registration runs from 7 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. and the event begins at 8 p.m. Adult registration is $10 and kids, ages people at the event will receive a Sigma Kappa Foundation to support their philanthropies, including Alzheimer’s research and the Maine Sea Coast Mission.

A volleyball tournament to raise funds for Tim Dobos will be held on Saturday, October 18 from 8 p.m. until midnight at the REC center.

Teams are six to eight people and must include at least one female.

The cost is $5 per person. Forms are available in the REC center and are due back with money for each team member by Monday, Oct. 13.

You may remember faculty almost going on strike two years ago. You may remember rallies, buttons and what APSCUF is and what we do for you?

APSCUF stands for Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties. It is a union of faculty members and coaches of the 14 state universities (Lock Haven Unity, etc.). APSCUF has over 6,000 members around the state who teach and coach nearly 120,000 students like you. to “…work on behalf of student and faculty interests to provide the highest quality education at the most reasonable cost by ensuring that a diversity of programs are available, taught by for the pursuit of educational excellence.”

Fancy words, but what do we

do for YOU? First, we work to keep your classes small, so you can get the attention you need from your professors. We know that many students choose LHU because they want to build relationships with peers and professors.

Second, we meet with the legislators who make decisions about funding for public higher education. In many cases, your faculty members meet face-to-face with representatives in Harrisburg to convince them to restore the funding that has been cut in recent years. Such funding will keep your tuition costs down.

Third, APSCUF functions as a government for faculty and coaches, ensuring that we are treated fairly and that the state of Pennsylvania (our employer) holds up its end of the contract they negotiate with us every four years. Fair treatment is essential for attracting the very best faculty members to the university – the faculty members with whom you will build relationships.

In the coming year, APSCUF will be entering into contract negotiation with the state. We know from past negotiation that STUDENT SUPPORT WORKS, so don’t be surprised if we call on you to send emails, attend rallies and support your professors and coaches in our effort to give you the best possible education.

Allison Boehler anb5099@lhup.edu Guests Writers Lock Haven University’s International exchange program has decreased in popularity since its high point in 2003.

There were 66 students participating in the study abroad program in 2002-2003. The numbers after the 2002-2003 school year show huge drops, going from 66 down to 39.

Although the number of students studying abroad years, we still see a very downward trend. Why do these numbers continue to drop, and what can be done about it?

Rosana Campbell, director of the Institute for International Studies, explained what she perceives is the reason for the drop in students studying abroad.

“Students are now more interested in getting the courses they need than having an international experience,” she said.

Campbell also noted that current society has put much more emphasis on graduating quickly with the classes you need than having other outside experiences. She also pointed out that the economy has a huge role to play in students choosing

to study abroad. Campbell noted our current dollar is not worth much in many other countries, so the exchange rate makes it hard for students to come up with enough money to live comfortably in another country.

Shawn O’Dell, the secretary of the Institute for International Studies, has had to help hundreds of students work their way through the study abroad -

hand experience of how money can affect students studying abroad.

O’Dell explained that several students must drop the study abroad program each semester because of nancial aid does help with studying abroad, there are still many expenses that must be paid exclusively by the student.

The university’s tuition increases could have a direct correlation with students who are studying abroad. The tuition here at Lock Haven has increased 30 percent since

2003. Students must also pay for housing, food and transportation in their chosen countries. These additional costs often dispel any thoughts of studying abroad.

Senior business major Josh Hornig gave different insight on why students are not participating in study abroad. They simply don’t know about it.

Hornig explained that although he knew Lock Haven had a study abroad program, he knew very little about it. There was never a presentation about the study abroad program in any of his classes.

“One of the only reasons I knew it existed was because I lived in Woolridge which is where they put all the exchange students,” Hornig said.

Money is the main deterrent to students not studying abroad. The other problem occurring is a lack of advertising and outreach to the general campus. However, the Institute for International Studies hosts several events throughout the semester to give students the opportunity to learn about the different programs that are offered at Lock Haven University.

Campbell has mentioned her willingness and overall excitement about speaking to classes about study abroad. Students may also attend the Institute for International Studies’ information sessions, held every Thursday at 4 p.m. in Ulmer 212.

Artist brings in a full house with beautiful works Megan Zick Staff Writer Maz242@lhup.edu

The opening reception of the new art show was on Monday at the Sloan Fine Arts building in the art gallery.

Joshua Willis, from Brooklyn, N.Y. displayed his paintings throughout the main foyer area. So far he has been featured in over 80 art exhibitions in both New York and in Europe.

There were a lot of Lock Haven students that came to the opening of the new art gallery on Monday. Willis said, “this was the largest group of people that he had spoken to.”

Willis spoke to the students about the inspiration behind the different paintings and the techniques that he used for the paintings he had on display.

Willis had paintings from three different series located throughout the gallery; ‘Oblivion’ (2012), ‘Forever Overhead’ (2013) and ‘In the Shadow of the Machine’ (2014).

However, this art show is centered around series ‘In the Shadow of the Machine’.

These painting were based on photographs that Willis took of old paintings.

Thus emphasizing the landscapes that were depicted at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria. This is also where the ‘Tower of Babel’ (1563), by Peter Bruegel the Elder, is housed.

“The old paintings I photographed hang in galleries around the ‘Tower’ so I imagined the landscapes I painted to be the spaces surrounding the mythical tower,” Willis said.

All of Willis’s paintings on display in the art gallery are oil based on wood panel.

Willis painted layer upon layer of paint with a color variation on each of those layers. Willis then took sandpaper and ground down the painting exposing each of the layers, creating an elegant touch to the painting.

If you didn’t go to the opening reception on Monday and still want to see Willis’s paintings, they will be on display at the Sloan Fine Arts building in the art gallery until Thursday, Oct. 23. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8am to 9pm.

Storybrooke’s favorite fairytale characters have ‘frozen’ over freezing Storybrooke.

Kayla Marsh A&E Editor kmarsh2@lhup.edu Season four of “Once Upon a Time” premiered on Sunday Sept. 28. It seems like our favorite fairytale characters can’t catch a break.

Last season as soon as our heroes got back from saving Henry in Neverland, they were faced with Regina’s vindictive, jealous sister the Wicked Witch of the West.

Season four started with, of course, another crisis. After Emma (Jennifer Morrison) and Captain Hook (Colin O’Donoghue) traveled back in time, they brought a couple things back with them.

Not only did they bring back Robin Hood’s wife, thus ruining The Evil Queen’s relationship, they also brought Elsa The Snow Queen, thus

episode, we’re in for a bumpy season but in the best way. After the disaster of season two part B, the writers started realizing that the strength of their show laid with the core actors.

Their chemistry is undisputable. The scenes between Jennifer Morrison’s Emma Swan and Lana Parrilla’s Evil Queen Regina are where the magic truly happens (excuse the pun).

The two women have incredible grasps on their respective characters and it’s clear when they share the screen.

Chemistry is the key to this show, and when the casting department gets it right they hit it out of the park.

The chemistry between sisters Elsa (Georgina Haig) and Anna (Elizabeth Lail) is undeniable. The two actresses truly embody the characters they were cast as.

Lail’s Anna is as spritely and enthusiastic as her Disney counterpart. Haig’s Queen Elsa is as regal as her title entails. After just one episode of

seeing their interactions, the audience can’t wait for more.

“Once Upon a Time” has done a great job of weeding out the non-essential characters only keeping ones of substance.

Also, they are centering their stories around their strongest characters. If Once Upon a Time keeps this going we should be in store for an incredible season.

While Prince may have been very busy since “Planet Earth” came out 7 years ago, this is the first time we get to hear his original sound on some new tracks.

I was never a huge fan of Prince and haven’t listened to a lot of his music. What I do know is his popularity back in the 80’s never went away. Prince doesn’t let fans down with the release of “ART OFFICIAL AGE.” Not only is he still the funky, groovy musician from the 80’s but also he made a statement with this album.

One of the first things you notice with “ART OFFICIAL AGE” is that it’s in all capital letters. Everything. I think its kind of a cool statement Prince is trying to make. It’s almost like as if he is saying, “I’m back!

And this new music will wow you.”

While Prince is definitely not my first choice for

music, I could definitely see myself jamming to him. His style is pretty unique and his R&B roots are extremely noticeable in “ART OFFICIAL AGE.” I really enjoyed this cool and unique album. “ART OFFICIAL AGE” definitely sets itself apart from not only most of Prince’s work, but a lot of artists these days.

I could only find a few downsides to the album, one is that some of the songs got a little too heavy techno and lost some of the base music to the song. Another issue I had was that a majority of the tracks seemed like they were perfect for the bedroom and not my ear plugs.

It was a little awkward for me but then again thats also Prince’s style and I respect him for being such a crazy musician.

Overall I really enjoyed this album and would recommend it to anyone who wants to try something new, is already a Prince fan or is an R&B lover.

Kyra Smith-Cullen Editor-In-Chief ksmithcu@lhup.edu Long ago, there was a cartoon that appealed to all generations. “Avatar the Last Airbender” enthralled viewers with beautiful animation and wellwritten storylines.

Alas, the creators decided that the show would end after its third season and the fandom mourned. Years later, they announced a new show – “The Legend of Korra”. It may not be the original, but I believe it is just as good as The Last Airbender.

First, there is the fact that the protagonist is a female person of color who isn’t a victim or a stereotype. Instead, Korra is a girl who is struggling to be what is expected of her.

She’s the Avatar, responsible for maintaining balance and harmony.

Throughout the course of the seasons, she has to deal with people criticizing her decisions and she comes to realize that she can’t always be perfect or

have all the answers.

She’s feisty, strong and independent and, to put it in her words, the viewers “Gotta deal with it.”

Another female main character, Asami, breaks stereotypes. She’s a rich, pretty girl, but she’s also a business leader who proves that she can hold her own among her bending friends. In a world where half the population has the power to control the elements, Asami proves that being ordinary is nothing to be ashamed of.

Next, the story arcs are well thought out and they allow the viewers to watch the characters develop.

People grow and learn, either through mistakes or positive experiences.

Plus, the show incorporates characters from the original series; so old fans have a chance to relive the cartoon. We get to see a familiar world that has aged with us.

In conclusion, anybody that watched the original show or wants

2014 Wildcat Comic Con Kathleen Ellison Online Editor kae742@lhup.edu The Pennsylvania College of Technology held their third annual Wildcat Comic Con Saturday, Sept. 28.

The event was attended by vendors and artists selling merchandise ranging from old Nintendo 64 games to hand drawn prints. In addition there was video game testing, face painting, and caricature drawings.

There was also a cosplay contest judged by Project Runway star Pamela Patk and voice actor Eric Stuart.

Over forty contestants participated in the event. Each contestant walked across a stage with the chance to act like his or her character. Contestants were judged on there acting, quality of costume and other factors.

The winners of the adult cosplay contestant were Cody Emery, dressed as The Oracle from “Atomic Highway” in third place; Zac Lehr, as an Awoken Titan from the “Destiny” game in second place; and Daniel Delgado, as Ezio Auditore from “Assassin’s and more.

Viola Davis teaches “How to Get Away With Murder” Quanya Myers Staff Writer qmyers@lhup.edu

Rhimes is the supreme wordsmith ruler of all the CHEAL JACKSON of television writers.

In short, How To Get Away with Murder is a legal drama series. A group of overzealous law students and their brilliant audacious cut-throat criminal defense professor, played to perfection by Viola Davis, become involved in a dark contorted murder plot.

Viola Davis ruthless attitude and her prominent stern face gave me Gregory House tease.

The show opens up with in an ominously gloomy scene with four people in the woods whom we later learn are Wes Gibbins played by gorgeous Harry Potter alum Alfred Enoch. Connor Walsh, played by equally gorgeous Jack Falahee, Michaela Pratt (Aja Naomi King) and Laurel Castillo (Karla Souza).

The scene switches to 3 months before where they’re in the incomparable Viola…I mean Professor Keating’s Criminal Law class. As she spewed her

legal rhetoric, I sat there beyond dumbfounded. My knowledge of the law doesn’t surpass Law & Order SVU. Almost automatically, the students are thrust into an attempted murder case. They’re given the daunting task of preparing a good defense and presenting it to her and her associates in one minute. ONE DAMN MINUTE. (Clearly, I am not law material).

The top four students with the best defense get a chance to work with her in this upcoming case.

The top presentation gets a trophy, which they can turn in at any given time to get out of an exam. intricate twist and turns, mysteries and shocking surprises. The narrative layers in this show require you to be of some intelligence and forces you to keep up.

To answer the burning question how to get away with murder, Viola outlines the new suspect and bury the evidence.

This show has everything going for it. A strong African American female lead character in Viola Davis’s Professor Keating, a striking LGBT lead in Jack Falahee’s Connor, a gritty dark and twisty plot and a strong presence of people of color.

If this show does as well as Rhimes’s other shows we are sure to see a lot more from Professor Keating and murderous students.

Students at Lock Haven University were hyped when Apple recently released their new software to users and released its new line of phones. Many consumers, even some android users, were raving with excitement, just to be disappointed and left with a bitter taste in their mouths.

“The new iPhone and its features, make me tempted to switch from my android. I like the bigger screens and iPhone usually never disappoints,” said Gerard Cobb, a senior sports administration major.

The same day iOS 8.0.1 was released it was recalled and pulled off the market. IPhone users were calling in with many complaints, especially with the new phone, iPhone 6. The majority of the complaints were of calls being dropped, broken connection and touch ID was failing to any calls, leaving their brand new expensive device as useful as an iPod touch. These are only a few of the long list of complaints users had.

“The new features were nice. The six offers faster internet, bigger screen, better camera and you can use it as a debit or credit card,” said Rashawn Cunningham, a my camera was upside down on Face Time calls, so I would

Gravesange is only one of the many students with the iPhone on campus who is not completely enthused with Apple and its new products. Some might do to their inexpensive device. Students thoroughly depend on their phones as a lifeline to get through their busy days. They need email, phone, text and many other accessible applications to make due and get by with their hectic days.

Apple released the 8.0.2 update shortly after all the complaints and issues. IPhone 6 users problems have seemed to be answered however, older models have some minor issues still with their device. Apple customers at LHU still have mixed feelings about the update.

Scientists have learned a great deal about the center of our galaxy in recent months. They know that it consists of billions of gallons of alcohol that taste of rum and that it also smells like raspberries.

Sounds like a very pleasant place to call home, but it gets even better.

At the center of the Milky Way there is a dust cloud that not only smells like raspberries and tastes like rum but it also contains an organic carbon based molecule. That’s right, those things responsible for life as we know it.

This molecule is called iso-propyl cyanide and is, to date, the most complex carbon based molecule to have been found in a star forming dust cloud like Sagittarius B2. This cloud has been studied before and other carbon based molecules have been found but iso-propyl cyanide is different in a very important way, it branches out. All the other molecules have been single lines of carbon bases but not the newest one. It branches and it is these off shoots that link it closely to the same amino acids that are the basis for life on Earth.

Here is why this is so important even if it appears to be a bit of a leap.

Iso-propyl cyanide is closely related to the molecules that make up amino acids.

Amino acids make up proteins and the proteins are part of what is necessary ids are spread throughout the Milky Way whether in dust clouds or meteorites, then it is possible that life may also be somewhere other than Earth.

Here we all are in a galaxy that may indeed support other life forms than the ones here on our little blue sphere and it all smells like raspberries and tastes like rum.

The opening night is this Friday at 7:00 p.m. Tickets stop being sold at 10:00 p.m.

Tickets range from 12 to 17 dollars. This attraction is going on every weekend through the rest of the month.

Haner Farms- Picking your own pumpkins is always a fun fall activity. This farm is located at 2191 W. Whitehall Rd. In addition to the pumpkin picking, they have corn mazes as well. It is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. It is also open Sunday at 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Knoebels- Elysburg’s amusement park has several rides available for patrons to go on, including a ride on the Phoenix in the dark and a haunted Antique Cars. The park is only open on Friday and Saturdays though, but it is a fun night trip if you’re willing to drive approximately an hour.

Foster said, “What is wonderful about great literature is that it transforms the man who reads it towards the condition of the man who wrote.” Literature, language, poetry, and writing are the essence of what students in the English Club study, debate, and create. The purpose of this club is to organize and promote activities related to literature, language, poetry, and writing.

About the English Club: Students in the English Club submit their own writings, including poetry, prose, short stories, song lyrics and more to be discussed by the club. The club discusses improvements that can be made and what the strong points of the piece were.

English Club is open to students outside of the English major. Students are invited to come discuss their peers work and hang out with other students interested in creative writing.

Member Lauren Waters spoke about being a member in the English Club.

“I always love going to English Club. There are so many talented writers and I enjoy reading their works. Every year, I look forward to the trips such as going to New York or to see Poe Evermore in Lancaster. The club gives good advice for things that I write and helps me to revise my work. I always have a good time in the meetings and highly recommend that people come experience the fun of creative writing and this amazing club.”

The day that Saturday morning cartoons died Sarah Eckrich Opinion Editor seckrich@lhup.edu My 55-year-old mother (who will soon disown me for publicly disclosing her age) believes in Saturday morning cartoons.

She grew up with “H. R. Pufnstuf” (if you’re into weird, old psychedelic cartoons, you’ve got to check that one out), Bugs Bunny and Elmer Fudd.

Live-action television heroes included Curly, Larry and Moe Howard (“The Three Stooges”—and not to leave out Shemp, but come on…).

Mom will argue that Saturday morning cartoons are rich with literary allusions and classical music—she’ll sing you “Kill the Wabbit” and explain how long she thought that those were the real words to Ride of the Valkyrie. She points out the limits of live-action programs and all the opportunities that cartoons have to engage and ignite the imagination and how important it is to build those frameworks in children so that they can be taught to critically think and innovate later in life.

And she’s right, which makes the death of Sat-

urday morning cartoons all the more sad.

Saturday, Sept. 27 marked the last airing of Saturday morning cartoons. It was the last time that kids and 20-somethings could sit down, sugary cereal in lap and consume a few hours of cartoons on network television (its appearance on network tional Saturday morning cartoons).

It assaults our well-developed collective sense Buzzfeed lists—as we millennial types lose another icon of “our” generation and childhoods.

But I’m not so sure that kids these days have a place built into their lives for Saturday morning cartoons. If they have, with a range of programming exploding beyond network television it seems far more likely they’d be watching whatever Cartoon Network is showing. With cable and streaming proday morning can also easily be replaced by Sunday mid-afternoons or Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

I don’t want to downplay the death of a culturbeing mobbed by angry cartoon enthusiasts—with

whom I empathize—I am suggesting that our feeling wistful is the worst that’s going to come of it.

Not only do kids still have multiple access points to regular cartoon programming, but the better than the last block of trash the CW aired this past Saturday. I’d call our love of shows like “Doug” and “Hey Arnold” more of our generational narcissism, but in my experience, most parents— who were adults when introduced to these shows— did and still do enjoy watching these shows. They demonstrated a level of complexity and an ability to speak across the ages that we haven’t really seen since in cartoons.

So it isn’t that losing Saturday morning cartoons doesn’t matter—just that the reason is purely ing its last few hours of cartoon programming on one morning one day a week means the death of all nally died, we can take solace in realizing that they retired years ago.

Wawa vs. Sheetz debate is over Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu

Around campus I always hear people talk about both Wawa and Sheetz and arguing about which one is better, like people do with Coke and Pepsi.

However, I don’t understand the argument.

I grew up with Wawa. Wawa is located in eastern Pennsylvania near Philwant fast service and don’t want to look through a big menu (as I know from experience living around Philadelphia).

As for Sheetz, they are located more toward central and western Pennsylvania. People from these parts seem to be more on the relaxed side and less fast paced. Both Wawa and Sheetz have to please their own customers based on the preferences in those areas.

Coming to Lock Haven and only having Sheetz after growing up with Wawa made me hesitant to see what Sheetz was all about. After going though, I realized that Wawa and Sheetz, although similar in some senses are actually very different.

First of all, very few Wawa locations offer a gas station whereas most, if not all Sheetz locations have them. So Sheetz is like a two-stop shop.

Second, the food selection is completely different. Sheetz has a lot more

fried food and Wawa focuses on their sandwiches and even has a “Hoagie Fest.”

Third, the atmosphere is different. Wawa is more of a general store—in and out. It’s more for business type people who need a quick lunch. On the other hand Sheetz feels like it can be a hangout spot to sit outside and talk with friends.

These aren’t the only keys to the never-ending argument. You also have to look at which a person knows better.

Growing up with Wawa and not having anything else like it and then bringing Sheetz into the mix really makes a person freak out. They have known Wawa their whole life and now there is a store like it and so it has to be worse because it’s not Wawa.

The same goes for people who grew up with Sheetz; if they go to a place where Wawa is the only thing around, they are biased as well because Sheetz is all they know.

Ultimately, it should be understood that Wawa and Sheetz aren’t exactly the same so comparing them is like comparing apples and oranges. I prefer Wawa. Does that mean I hate Sheetz? Absolutely not! I’m eating tater tots from Sheetz as I write this! (I just really enjoy hoagies which is why I prefer Wawa.)

So before you debate that Sheetz or Wawa lover and go to tear their argument to shreds remember this: Wawa and Sheetz are not the same. They are similar, but ultimately not the same.

The Legacy of Derek Jeter

Many words come to mind when one would think about Derek Jeter: effort, class, dignity and heart are a few that come to mind.

However, there is one that stands out above all else: winner.

The legacy of Derek Jeter is one that will never be questioned and is one that will never be touched.

Here’s one astounding number for you: 2,743.

2,743 is the number of games Derek Jeter has played in his career. What is even more astounding about that number is he has played every single one of his games in the pinstripes of the New York Yankees.

Derek Jeter made his debut at the reer as a Yankee at age 40.

Jeter is one of six players who have started playing with one team at team after turning 40: Ted Williams,

Stan Musial, George Brett, Brooks Robinson and Cal Ripken Jr. Here is one word to describe that list: legendary.

Let us throw another number at you: 3,461.

3,461 is the number of hits Jeter ers in Major League Baseball history have more hits than Jeter: Pete Rose, Ty Cobb, Musial, Hank Aaron and Tris Speaker. Jeter’s last hit: an inHere is a word for that list: iconic.

And here is one more astounding number: 2,673.

2,673 is the number of games Jeter has played at shortstop in his career. Throughout his entire career, Jeter did not play one other defensive position other than shortstop -- not even in the 17th inning when the games by any player in history at one defensive position, while never playing anywhere else.

Okay, let’s just throw another number out there: 14.

14 is the amount of all-star games Derek Jeter has played in. And remember, he played 20 seasons.

A career .310 hitter, Jeter played

in 16 postseasons. His postseason batting average: .308 -- including a lifetime .343 hitter in the American League Divisional Series and a .321 hitter in the World Series. Not too bad, if we do say so ourselves.

Speaking of the World Series, Mr. championships in his career: 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2009.

Here’s another statistic: Jeter played in the biggest baseball market in the United States. He played for perhaps the most historic franchise in American sports history. He played in the bright lights of New York City for 20 seasons!

Of all of those logistics, Jeter was never thrown out of one game -- not

forever.

We all have great memories of are just a few.

The sports world has watched the all of the memories he has provided us with, now is the time to cherish them because there will never be another player like Number Two.

Football downed at ESU Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University football team (0-4, 0-3 PSAC East) opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East action today with a 48-21 loss at East Stroudsburg University (3-1, 2-1 PSAC East).

The Bald Eagles defense once again came up big and Lock Haven struck early, but it wasn’t enough to steal the win on the road.

On just the third play from scrimmage, LHU defensive back George Christas (Dallastown, Pa./ Dallastown) intercepted Matt Soltes’s pass and returned in 36 yards to the ESU 10-yard line, setting up the Bald Eagles offense in the red zone.

Men’s soccer slips late to Shepherd Bret Pallotto Co-sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu The Lock Haven men’s soccer team (4-3-1) was defeated in non-conference action by the visiting Rams of Shepherd University (5-3-1) in overtime by a score of 3-2.

Junior forward Jacob Oldaker (Elliottsburg, Pa./West Perry) started the scoring when ran onto a through ball from fellow junior Colt Brackbill (Juniata, Pa./Juniata). Oldaker has now scored in half of LHU’s games this season and has proven to be extremely durable. The former PSAC Freshman of the Year has played at least 85 minutes in every game -- including a 110 minute performance against Cedarville.

Shepherd then evened the scoring in the 35th minute to send the two teams to halftime with a score of 1-1. Oldaker was involved in Lock Haven’s second goal as well when he sent a cross into the box that sophomore Jesse Smith (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) put into the back of the net. Smith has now herd battled back to score in the 74th minute to again level the score, 2-2.

Shepherd was called for the penalty and Lock Haven was awarded a penalty kick with 9:17 left on the clock. Oldaker was called upon to take the kick, but it was eventually saved by Shepherd’s junior goalkeeper. After the save was made, the ball squirted away from the goalie and was ruled out of bounds, which gave Lock Haven another corner kick. Shepherd’s goalie was not pleased with the call and made his feelings known to the referee, who promptly gave him a yellow card. After a series of chances for both teams, the game went into overtime 2-2.

After a slow start to the extra time, sophomore Troy Amspacher (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) exploded down the sideline in an attempt to create a goal scoring opportunity. However, Shepherd gained possession of the ball and herd capitalized on the mistake and ended the game just 2:50 into the overtime for the 3-2 victory.

The team will look to bounce back this Saturday, Oct. 4 when they take on the New York Institute of Technology Bears at 2 p.m. at Hubert Jack Stadium.

Gomish named PSAC Volleyball Athlete of the Week Bret Pallotto Co-Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu Lock Haven Lady Eagles volleyball freshman Sarah Gomish was named PSAC Volleyball Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 29.

Gomish is the first Lock Haven women’s volleyball player this season to be named to the award this season.

On Friday, Gomish recorded 10 kills and eight digs to lead Lock Haven to a 3-1 win over East Stroudsburg.

On Saturday against Kutztown, Gomish recorded 22 kills, had four assists, and also recorded nine digs as she led Lock Haven to another victory.

In her most recent contest against Pitt-Johnstown, she added 10 digs along with four kills and four blocks.

Gomish, a graduate of Bishop Carroll high school, committed to Lock Haven over both D-III powerhouse Juniata College and the aforementioned Pitt-Johnstown.

While at Bishop Carroll, she lead the team to their first ever District 6 title.

In a previous interview with LHU volleyball’s blog, Gomish outlined her goals that she would like to achieve before leaving the university. “I would like to see our team win the PSAC and an NCAA title,” Gomish said.
