NCAA Tournament full of upsets this season.

This year’s NCAA March Madness Tournament was full of upsets and did not yield on the excitement. With the Final Four containing only one number one seed, many brackets were busted. The University of North Carolina (UNC) has remained strong throughout the tournament winning by double digits in every victory. The Tar Heels will be playing Syracuse, a tenth seed, who has shocked its way into the final four with victory after victory. The other games will be the two seed Villanova led by Ryan Arcdiacano taking on the two seed Oklahoma led by Buddy Hield, one of the best performers this March Madness Tournament.

Oklahoma are slight favorites over Villanova, and North Carolina are heavy favorites over Syracuse, but it is March Madness, crazier things have happened.

Presidential Primaries continue in America.

The Primaries are still raging on in America to see who the next president might be. With the Democratic candidates still being Clinton and Sanders and the Republican candidates being Trump, Cruz and Kasich. With the Wisconsin primary coming up, all the candidates are pulling to win there, being one of the most crucial GOP primaries. Cruz is currently leading Trump, and Kasich is just hanging on to remain relevant. The hot topic this time around is immigration. 70 percent of voters support “a pathway” for illegal immigrants to be granted citizenship. With a deep analysis of the republican voters, it seems that Kasich is siphoning Cruz voters with his supporters finding Trump more favorable. Clinton leads Sanders in Wisconsin by five percent.

A planet in our solar system was hit with an unidentified object.

The largest planet in our solar system has been struck by an unidentified object. Videos emerged of something hitting Jupiter with a quick flash, making an impact. Amateur astronomer, Gerrit Kernbauer of Austria documented the incident.

Jupiter sits on the edge of an asteroid belt, and its high gravity can pull things towards it over time.

Though the object is miniscule in comparison to Jupiter the impact was very powerful. With Juno, NASA’s spacecraft, set to enter Jupiter’s orbit in a few short months, it will be the first probe to see below the planet’s dense cloud cover.

San Bernardino shooters phone unlocked without help of Apple.

The FBI was able to get into San Bernadino shooters iphone without the help of Apple earlier this week. As a result, the FBI also dropped their lawsuit against Apple as they refused to unlock the terrorists phone. The government has not released any information of what was or was not found on the phone and will not name the third party that helped unlock the phone. The unlocking of the shooters phone does pose a problem, the FBI must report back to the National Security Council because their worry is that other countries may use this method to unlock American Government officials phones.

The first liver transplant between an HIV-positive donor and recipient takes place.

Doctors performed the first liver transplant between an HIV-positive donor and recipient at Johns Hopkins University. Morris Murray was diagnosed with HIV in 1987 and is still living today. An estimated 1,000 transplants between HIV-positive donors and recipients could take place per year, according to Dr. Dorry Segev.

During spring break, a group of students from LHU took a trip down to North Carolina through MountainServe to build a house for a single mother and her five children.

Thirteen students gathered together and took an eight hour drive down to Newport, North Carolina at 4:30 in the morning. On the ride down, they had no idea where they were sleeping, they were all expecting to be staying on the floor of a church. “We didn’t know where we were staying on the drive down, we had no idea what to expect until they gave us the

keys to our house on the beach and drove us there and it’s not always like that so we are very lucky.” said Hailey Vaka, a freshman majoring in Health Science.

On their first night, they were able to meet the family that they building the house for.

They got to know the mother and five children who ranged from ages 7-17.

Vaka said, “Something that helped make the trip better was that we all got along and had a common goal of wanting to do community service and to give back to the community.”

Habitat for Humanity’s national alternative spring break program, Collegiate Challenge, works with college students in hopes to engage the next generation of leaders.

“I liked how I felt like we helped a town that really needed it because we were on the TV, radio and on the front page of their newspaper, so I felt like we were really

helping the community. “ said Morgan Capobianco, a freshman majoring in Health Science.

Most of the costs were covered by SAS, Habitat for Humanity also provided dinners and lunches. There were also free activities to do as part of service learning trips. “We took a ferry over to Carrot Island, visited Fort Macon and went kayaking,” Vaka mentioned.

One of the volunteers there, also helping with the building process, told the group of students that seeing them give up their spring break and giving back to a community makes him feel good about the future.

“I think the greatest thing was that I was going with a group of people from the university that all have similar interests and it was nice to go with a group of people who wanted to give back to the community,” Vaka said.

This isn’t the first year Lock Haven has done this. Last year, students went down to Georgetown, North Carolina and put together door frames and windows for a few different houses.

“I did a lot of community service in high school and wanted to continue once I got to college. I’ve also always wanted to get involved with Habitat for Humanity and was glad this opportunity came up.” Said Chloe Farrell a freshman and health science major studying pre-physical therapy.

Terren Lesher, a Sophomore majoring in Secondary English Education and Special Education said, “It’s wonderful to see the progress you can make by just using your hands in just five days and how much you just changed a family’s life.”

“Even though we were able to stay on the beach, I would still go down just for the people even if it meant sleeping on the floor in a sleeping bag. It’s a great feeling to give back not just to one person but to an entire community,” said Capobianco.

LHU’s President’s Commission on LGBTQ Affairs and Student Activities Office is hosting speaker Mr. Sinclair Sexsmith in “Identities in a Label Free World” on Wednesday Apr. 6 from 6:30-8:00 in PUB #2. Sexsmith will be discussing the difference between labels and identities and the liberation that can come from words.

Sexsmith specializes in queer sexualities, genders and relationships. They have also produced the award-winning website “Sugarbutch: Queer Sex, Kink, Gender, Relationships.” The writer and spoken-word performer leads workshops online and across country at colleges about how to use identity as a tool for liberation.

“That’s a fancy way of saying that I write and study ways of becoming more myself,” says Sinclair on their website sugarbutch. net. “I study myself and the places where I interact with the world.”

Erin Kennedy, Associate Professor of the Psychology Department and chair of the Promotion, Education, and Visibility

subcommittee, said that they chose Sinclair for his variety of topics and charisma.

“We were excited that Sinclair is a nationally known entertainer who has much to offer,” said Kennedy. “Many LHU students, staff, and faculty believe they have little or no interaction with people who do not fit the traditional male-female gender binary.

However, this is unlikely. An event like this will hopefully make people at LHU more aware of a variety of gender identities and help everyone understand that regardless of what label a person chooses (if any label at all), we are all human beings and citizens of this university. It is important that we understand each other and get along.”

Sinclair’s event is just one way the President’s Commission on LGBTQ Affairs is meeting its goal of encouraging diversity and creating a more supportive campus environment for all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. They have also been advocating for gender neutral bathrooms all over campus.

“I also hope that a frank discussion of labels will help us understand the importance of avoiding other types of labels in other areas, especially derogatory ones, of course,” said Kennedy.

‘Batman v. Superman’ brilliant but empty Sam Shirk

A&E Editor sxs1090@lhup.edu Whether you’re Team Wayne or Team Kent, it’s time to head over to the movies and show your support for “Dawn of Justice.”

The prologue chapter to the Justice League hit theaters on Mar. 25 which led to some very mixed reactions from critics and fans. Critics haven’t really enjoyed the first installment to the famous Superfriends team but a good chunk of fans have.

Your enjoyment of the movie depends on what your interests are as a viewer. Don’t go into “Dawn of Justice” expecting it to be nothing but the greatest battle ever, because it’s not that type of film.

The story has a more philosophical feel throughout it and explores issues that we see in spurts in every vigilante movie.

“Batman v. Superman” takes place 18 months after the events of “Man of Steel,” where Superman battled General Zod and destroyed a majority of Metropolis in the battle. Batman, witnessing some of the destruction, feels Superman’s actions have been left unchecked and decides to take on the Man of Steel himself. Meanwhile, the world wrestles over what kind of hero it really needs.

Manipulating each hero in the palm of his hand, the crazy Lex Luthor creates a new threat, Doomsday, which results in Batman and Superman need-

ing to put their differences aside and work with Wonder Woman to take down the threat and save Metropolis.

“Batman vs. Superman” had a lot of pros and cons, but it’s definitely one true comic book fans are going to like. It includes plenty of Easter-eggs and geek-out moments, but it can confuse noncomic book fans. There are quite a few plot holes strewn throughout but I felt it had strong points to it.

One big strong point are all the characters.

Each actor portrayed their roles well and even brought their own edge to it, as seen in Jesse Eisenberg’s Lex Luthor. He nailed the charismatic, arrogant, rich genius that many actors have portrayed before and even added a more sinister edge to the character. There’s a psychopathic edge to Lex in “Batman v. Superman” that explores deeper psychological aspects not normally associated with Lex (or at least not obviously associated with him). I really enjoyed that aspect and I’m looking forward to seeing him in future movies.

One of my favorite aspects was Ben Affleck’s Batman. I felt he really nailed Bruce Wayne and made him into a far more darker, intimidating character. Batman is absolutely terrifying in the new film and he goes to different extremes than previous versions of the Dark Knight. I felt he was a definitely a worthy successor to Christian Bale.

I loved Henry Cavill’s Superman in “Man of Steel,” so I continued to love him in this film. Su-

perman definitely kept the heart of the film, as he tends to do, and I felt Cavill portrayed him well. I definitely didn’t get a wooden feel from him.

Gal Gadot was also the perfect Wonder Woman. A lot of people didn’t like her in the trailer but I did. Sure, she was skinnier than the original Wonder Woman, but I felt she held herself in a pretty intimidating way, especially during the trio’s ultimate fight with Doomsday. She was strong, fast and powerful. Doomsday definitely felt those hits from her!

Action scenes were not an issue in this film.

They were intense and the special effects behind them were a very nice addition, not to mention some of the dialogue and emotional plot points this film discovered. Seeing two of the most iconic heroes bond over something so normal really stood out to me. What’s the best way to forge a close friendship with someone? Save someone important to them.

With a stronger story and less gaps, this film could have been amazing. I was a little upset the big battle wasn’t longer but I liked the way they went about it. Batman and his gadgets--I feel bad for Superman! I felt this was a good setup to the Justice League films; I’m excited for them. Even if you don’t see this superhero flick in theaters, I do recommend you watch it at least once at home.

There were plenty of dazzling moments that made up for the really bad ones. I’d rate it a 3.5 out of 5 Eagles.

When starting a new year, it is ideal to greet it with a fresh perspective, but keeping traditions helps us appreciate the many things that we have accomplished.

The Fine Arts Society (FAS) holds true to traditions in celebration of the upcoming Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition.

The Annual Juried Student Art Exhibition is “an art show with artwork by students,” Jason Bronner, a professor in the Visual and Performing Arts Department and the advisor of the FAS, said. The exhibition begins Apr. 4 and ends Apr. 22. Art pieces will be displayed in the Sloan Gallery.

The exhibition is open to any student that would like to participate and the participating student must submit their art by Apr. 1. Any type of artwork can be submitted with the stipulation that the art pieces were created during their college career. From there, the selected judge will pick what pieces will be displayed in the show unknown by that artist until the Sunday before the exhibition. The winning pieces will receive ribbons as prizes.

Having received a professional outlook on the exhibition, I then went to go seek a student’s. The student I interviewed was a contestant in last year’s exhibition. The student chose to remain anonymous.

When asked if he knew any history on the art exhibition, he said that the exhibitions have been around for as long as FAS has been. “FAS has been around for twentyplus years,” he added.

I asked the previous contestant if there are additional prizes and the places for each prize. “Yes, outside of the ribbons there are monetary awards given for the first prize in each category as well as the best in show,” the student explained. “The amount is dependent on the number of entries.”

Having a better understanding of the inner and outer workings of the exhibition, I asked the student if there were anyway other students on campus can get involved.

“Anytime during the length of the exhibit, anyone can view all submitted works during the open hours of Sloan, and they can also attend the opening reception to meet the artist,” he said.

I encourage all students to stop by Sloan between Apr. 4 and Apr. 22, not only to see the winning pieces of art, but also to support all of our fellow students who entered the exhibit. The Sloan Exhibit is open between 8am to 9pm every day.

Lucifer

old on to your souls, because there ain’t no rest for the wicked and the wicked have made their way onto Fox in a show called “Lucifer.” This procedural crime drama has a hellish twist that is pushing it up on my watch list. Of course, the devil’s in the details and this show has it with its unique writing style paired with beautiful characters and excellent acting.

In the show “Lucifer,” the devil himself (played by Tom Ellis) decides to take a vacation from hell. Instead of torturing poor souls in the underworld he opts to open a piano bar in Los Angeles where he frequently makes sordid deals with humans. One such human ends up being shot and killed in front of Lucifer – who is genuinely upset since he was close to her. Thus begins Lucifer’s descent into crime fighting with the beautiful detective Chloe Decker (played by Lauren German), who is investigating the murder. From then on, all Lucifer wants to do is help Chloe fight bad guys and bring justice, especially since Chloe is mysteriously immune to his powers, and he seems to be slowly turning mortal for unknown reasons, which makes all the danger more thrilling for him.

The show is set up very much like your typical crime drama, á la “CSI” or “NCIS.” I know what you’re thinking, “heaven help us another crime drama,” but the saving grace of the show is in fact the devil himself. The show is set up more like “Person of Interest” or the new NBC show “Blindspot,” in that the procedural element is mixed quite heavily with serious mysteries and overarching plots that go beyond each episode, promising beautiful world-building. An example of this is Lucifer’s continued refusal to go back to hell and possible threat of a war with the angels. It brings up the question, what happens to souls in hell without the devil? The combination is a plot that is not too heavy to digest and yet always enticingly engaging. The supernatural element reminds me a great deal of the short-lived NBC “Constantine” with its sassy British lead, demons and a lurking angelic war in common. Unlike “Constantine,” the show maintains a heavy foot in the human realm with Chloe.

If it seems like the supernatural moments are too overbearing, Chloe appears with her practical personality to put it to rest. She definitely adds a unique touch to the show with her refusal to believe that Lucifer is actually the devil and her personal life which often acts as a side story. Seeing Chloe struggle to raise her young daughter, while being separated from her husband, brings a softer and more emotional touch to the show. Not to mention, Lauren German’s portrayal of Chloe is fantastic. She truly delivers a wellrounded character between adorable scenes where she accuses her daughter of stealing cake, to serious scenes where she reveals her tough past in Hollywood as an actress. It’s interesting to see such a complex character interact with the superficial Lucifer.

I really love the character Lucifer despite the cliché villainy and sassiness all British characters seem to have in movies and TV. What wins me over is the seriousness glimpsed throughout the show. Ellis manages to really convey through his acting how the vain, one-dimensional personality is really just a mask for rage and despair. This hidden despair is best seen in the newest episode “Favorite Son” when (spoilers) it’s revealed his wings have been stolen. To see him break down in the therapist office and punch through the wall gave me shivers. I’m especially excited to see how this character develops when there’s so much promise in these small glimpses.

If the unique writing doesn’t make you think about selling your soul to this show, then the amazing portrayal of complex characters should. Like Lucifer himself the show has an easy-going and sometimes humorous exterior with an underbelly of drama, mystery and tragedy. Lucifer is definitely a devilishly good treat that deserves a chance. You can watch “Lucifer” Fridays on Fox at 9 PM.

Name: Carter Kaufman Year: Freshman Major: Health and Phys Ed Every year, we get a new batch of freshmen and we don’t know what we’re going to get. We can get future astronauts, engineers, marketers, policemen, teachers and, when Carter came Lock Haven, he added future athletic director to the list.

This freshman on the Lock Haven Men’s Soccer team plays outside midfield and although they’re in the off-season right now, they still practice everyday. But if he could travel, he would go to Manchester to watch a Manchester City game.

When he’s not on the field, Carter spends his time playing video games and hanging out with his friends. He also spends a lot of time home visiting family, as that’s something he really enjoys doing.

But if he had tomorrow off and was responsibility-free, he would spend all day doing absolutely nothing, spending his time in bed and watching Netflix. But let’s be honest, who wouldn’t? He’s already caught on to the college student life and this is only his second semester.

So far in his college career, Carter’s favorite class has been Teaching Lifetime Activities, which is a physical education class. He really likes the professor, Ms. Eaton, who is also his advisor, because he thinks she is really cool. He likes the class because it’s filled with a lot of other phys-ed kids and hey have a lot of fun together.

Carter has worked on a corn farm for along time and says it really isn’t a fun job. ‘Nuff said.

That’s why, if he had a million dollars, he would save it and invest it so it’ll become even more and he never has to work on a corn farm again.

He would even be able to catch a Manchester City game.

Our freshmen bring new life to our university and as upperclassmen, it’s important for us to guide them in the first year of their college career and help them achieve the goals they come in with.

The saying “Houston, we have a problem” is very recognizable in almost any space movie that has something go wrong. Why was Texas’s Johnson Space Center picked over all the other NASA’s bases as the command center (for human space flight) even though most (nearly all) launches are from Cape Canaveral in Florida?

First, let’s discuss why Florida is a great launch location. If you recall from middle school geography, Florida is closest to the equator than any other place in the continent of the United States. This is great for many reasons. First, it helps in maintaining a relatively warm climate. Second, the farther you move away from the equator, the more energy would be needed to get to space. So it is more “economical” to launch near the equator.

Finally, since all launches travel east to gain momentum, Florida, being on the east coast, provides a safety net if anything were to go wrong; it would be over water rather than land. That is why Texas and California were ruled out.

Getting back to Texas, when President Kennedy (JFK) set the goal of putting a man on the moon, NASA set out to build a central command center that could handle the work needed to accomplish that goal.

NASA determined some requirements that they would want the new center to have: mild climate, all weather commercial flight services, a Department of Defense base, a university nearby and 1,000 acres of land. Florida was the first choice but the plans for the center fell through so Houston, Texas, being the runner up, won the bid and the construction on the Johnson space center was started.

On a side note, the saying came about when astronaut Jack Swigert, who was the command module pilot on Apollo 13, saw a warning light that accompanied the bang the crippled the ship and said, “Houston, we’ve had a problem here.”

Save the date!

You’ll graduate on time with summer classes Kristi Bechdel

Staff Writer knb3859@lhup.edu Summer is a time when people have free time. It’s a time to go on vacations, adventures or work to save up money for the semester. Sometimes classes can be a little larger than we would like them and sometimes all the classes you need are not offered at a time that works with your schedule. This can make scheduling a nightmare. Every semester you plan out what classes you want and need and sometimes it doesn’t all work out. When classes don’t fit into your schedule you can look into taking them over the summer.

Usually gen-ed classes are the main kind of classes offered, but why not take them and get them out of the way?

Use your time on campus during the semester to work on your core classes and if a core class is offered over the summer, try to take it as well. You never know if there will be a scheduling conflict during the semesters coming and you won’t be able to take it. Better to get the classes you can out of the way so there’s less to worry about later.

Summer classes are something that people often dread because no one wants to be in class when the weather is beautiful. It may seem like you will hate those three to five weeks, but the time flies. Summer classes are generally smaller than classes throughout the year. This is a generally a benefit because the smaller the class the more one-on-one you can have with the teacher.

According to USAToday.com, the three greatest benefits of summer classes are smaller class size, the ability to move

ahead in class work and fewer distractions. Summer classes allow you to get ahead in your curriculum. Summer classes offer fewer distractions because of the fewer people in the class and aren’t fifteen weeks long, they only last three to five weeks. While some believe having shorter classes is a benefit others see having shorter classes as a disadvantage because the class is taught at a fast pace when some students need the slower pace to understand and truly learn the material.

Another benefit of summer classes would be that some classes are offered online. When you sign up for online classes, you don’t even have to leave the comfort of your own bed that day if you don’t want to, and if you live far away, you can still get your classes in while home for your summer break.

Online classes may be a benefit to some students because you don’t have to physically go to class, but they can also be a detriment because some students may slack off more when they don’t have to go daily and or they may struggle without a professor to explain things and guide them in person.

According to Study.com, some disadvantages of taking summer classes would be that a person has less downtime to enjoy summer. While taking classes to get ahead in college is a good idea, it can make it harder to get a summer job. Another disadvantage is there are normally less classes offered in the summer. This makes it challenging to move ahead in your major.

Altogether summer classes can be seen as beneficial or detrimental. Summer may be the time to live by a no-class schedule, but it can be the time to improve your school rankings. Classes in the summer may not be the best for your social life but in the end they are worth it. It’s your decision whether or not summer classes are for you or not.

We’re all addicted but it’s time to Break Free Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor act6730@lhup.edu

We are addicted to our technology. We depend on it for almost everything, especially our phones. Do you think you’re capable of spending a day technology free? We can jokingly say yes, one day won’t kill us and it’s totally possible. But really think about it. How many times a day do you use technology? TV? Phones?

Computers? Tablets? Nooks? Kindles? They’re everywhere. How about we try to cut back just a little so we can actually see the world around us and enjoy it a little bit more?

The Break Free App monitors your phone use during the day; how many times you unlock your screen and how long you actually use your phone. So far today, I’ve unlocked my phone 27 times and I’ve been on it for an hour and 39 minutes. The little dude in the app congratulated me because my addiction score was less than 100+ for the first time yesterday. I have a problem, and you probably do too.

My goal, upon seeing how addicted to my phone I was, is to not have my addiction score be 100+ for a week straight like it was last week.

This app really makes you feel guilty for using your phone so much. The little dude in the app makes scary faces when you have a high score.

To help us break free from our phones and technology in general, we should just go outside. Your phone battery will die faster anyway because you have to turn your brightness up higher, so just put it away. And if you can’t put your phone away, you can set up a time for the Break Free app to disable internet, stop notifications, auto reject calls and send auto texts so you’ll be less distracted.

We don’t need it to go for a walk on the dike with friends, or even go for a run. We can go swimming in the river (even though it might be too cold right now but we can plan for the warmer days) or sunbathe on the dike.

What about lounging on the new grass we have on the Russell lawn?

We didn’t get to enjoy it before it got too cold because the fences were still up but now we can lay a blanket down and hang out with friends or play a game there. Frisbee? Soccer?

Quidditch? Or even just a game of catch. Take your lunch from Bentley and eat it on the grass or on one of the many benches we now have. How about we find a use for these new pavilions and actually use them?

Get some chalk and draw on the sidewalks. We might get in trouble for it but it’ll definitely brighten up my day! Play some hop-scotch or four square. Take your hobbies outside and if you don’t have a hobby that doesn’t involve technology it is definitely time to find a new one.

Don’t you miss running around outside with all of the neighborhood kids? We may be “adults” but I’m still a child inside, are you? Let’s play kick-the-can, running bases, red rover, plain old tag or any other game you played as a kid. You don’t need to take pictures of everything, just have a good time and don’t worry about recording your life’s history. Write a memoir if you want to do that. Just enjoy the sun! Enjoy the warmer weather! Enjoy being outside! That’s what I’m going to do.

Adaptation of libraries to this ‘brave new world’ John Sosnowski

Guest Writer jsosnows@lhup.edu Since the advent of writing, libraries have served as a repository and commons of knowledge, providing information access to those who could not afford vast personal collections and hard-to-find archival materials to those who would use them for research and scholarship. Whereas library access was restricted to exclusive groups of elites and intellectuals for much of history, Enlightenment thought, along with the rise of the democratic spirit in America, begat the rise of public libraries operating for the benefit of the many; a concept now ubiquitous throughout much of the world.

Many readers probably have fond memories of a public or elementary school library which helped to foster a love of reading or learning from a young age. However, many may also question why we need libraries when hardbound books are increasingly being passed up in favor of e-readers and Google will tell us almost anything we want to know with a few keystrokes. But the Information Age in which we currently live makes libraries more valuable and important than ever.

In their most fundamental capacity, librarians curate and foster access to - and effective use of - information resources. Historically, this has primarily entailed a focus on physical books, hence, the prominent pop cultural image of libraries as sprawling aisles upon aisles of bookshelves. However, this idea is an oversimplification of library resources even before we consider the cornucopia of content brought forth by the age of the Internet. Twentieth Century libraries carried newspapers, magazines, movies, music, manuscripts and more in addition to the books for which they’re most famous; Twenty-first Century libraries continue to uphold this legacy and add digital content and technological resources like never before.

Many readers have probably checked out a laptop or iPad from the Media Services desk of our very own Stevenson Library. We are living in an unprecedented time of information, and libraries are keeping pace while responsively serving their communities’ needs.

The adaptation of libraries to this brave new world of digital resources merely represents a new phase of a core function libraries have served all along, facilitating access to shared resources for the benefit of all library patrons. We’re increasingly living in an access and sharing economy more so than ownership economy in which we get a ride from Uber, tunes from Spotify, a room from Airbnb and maybe even a hammer from a neighborhood tool share. Lending libraries are over a century ahead of the curve on this economic paradigm and don’t even charge for most of their basic services. Furthermore, a service like Infobase’s

Films on Demand (which is offered through our library) likely offers more in the way of truly informative and educational content than Netflix.

The overwhelming volume of information content now available and circulating makes the work of librarians even more crucial; with this informational overload, individuals who can help make sense of it all for the rest of us are priceless. Thankfully, librarians typically do it at no charge and are equipped with a master’s degree education in all things information science.

Though Google can readily answer the simplest of queries, the nuanced talents of a trained librarian at the reference desk take it to the next level while adding a human touch. For tougher queries, most librarians will be happy to sit down with their patrons, whether to transition them from Wikipedia to peer-reviewed scholarly sources or help unearth genealogical history. Good luck getting that kind of treatment from Siri or Cortana.

In addition to materials and help with their use, libraries provide safe spaces and organized events for the benefit of their patrons. Most readers have used their campus library for homework and studying and are especially aware of its value if they’ve burned the midnight oil before an exam in the 24 hour study lounge. Public libraries regularly offer programming meant to engage members of the communities they serve, young and old alike, with the arts and humanities. Despite the ubiquity of internet search and doomsayers claiming the obsolescence of the print book, libraries have a pivotal role to play in cultivating an informed society.

OPINION 13 North Carolina legislature discriminates against LGBT Meghan Mausteller Staff Writer mlm6713@lhup.edu

On Wednesday, Mar. 23, the North Carolina governor signed a bill that will prevent transgender individuals from using bathrooms and changing rooms that align with their gender identity.

House Bill 2, The Public Facilities and Security Act, states that it will “provide for single-sex multiple occupancy bathroom and changing facilities in schools and public agencies and to create statewide consistency in regulation of employment and public accommodations.”

The bill goes on to say that it protects the rights of individuals based on “race, religion, color, national origin, or biological sex;” however, this wording deliberately leaves out discrimination based on sexuality and gender identity.

The North Carolina General Assembly was going to address the bill in late April, but a recently approved ordinance in Charlotte convinced Republican legislators to push the bill forward. The Charlotte ordinance would have prohibited discrimination in housing and public accommodations based on sexual orientation and gender identity. It would have taken effect on April 1.

that 700,000 people 18 or older identify as transgender, it is highly probable that many people have already unknowingly shared a public bathroom with a transgender individual.

As a country that prides itself on its ability to be forward thinking and a leader among the nations, we are making very little to progress when it comes to the civil rights of minority groups. North Carolina’s legislation shows how much work we still have in the area of LGBT rights. It is difficult to guarantee basic human rights to all United States citizens when people are unwilling to accept individuals whose lifestyle choices they refuse to understand.

In the words of North Carolina Senator Dan Blue, this bill “reverses 40 plus years of progress.” Hopefully North Carolina legislators will recognize the damage this bill has caused and work toward eliminating the bill.

“As a country that prides itself on its ability to be forward thinking and a leader among the nations, we are making very little to progress when it comes to the civil rights of minority groups.”

Governor Pat McCrory (R) tweeted, “Ordinance defied common sense, allowing men to use women’s bathroom/locker room for instance. That’s why I signed bipartisan bill to stop it.”

Like many of the bill’s supporters, McCrory felt that passing the Public Facilities and Security Act would protect women and children from sexual predators in changing rooms, locker rooms, and bathrooms, a logic that has little to no actual support behind it.

However, this legislature blatantly overlooks the wellbeing of North Carolina’s transgender community. Bathrooms are often a place of harassment for transgender individuals and choosing the “best” bathroom is often an important part of the transitioning process.

According to Lara Nazario, a transwoman and Charlotte resident, the real danger occurs when the government forces its transgender residents to use bathrooms according to their biological sex.

Said Nazario, “If I were to walk into a men’s bathroom, I would either be told that I’m in the wrong bathroom or I’d be outed as a transgender woman.

This can often lead to violence or harassment, especially when there’s no protection in place for people like me.”

This legislature is an example of cisgender privilege in its finest form. It accepts the faulty logic that people can tell who is and who is not transgender based solely on physical appearance. But with a 2011 report estimating

Bald Eagles split four-game split with Ship Alex Wahl

Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University baseball team took one of two games last Saturday at Foundation Fields against rival Shippensburg.

After splitting two games the day before at Shippensburg, the fourgame series concluded with another two-game split at the Haven.

Lock Haven took a 3-2 series lead with a 3-1 victory. LHU pitcher Jacob Belinda threw a complete game and only gave up two hits. Shippensburg’s one run was unearned because of an error by catcher Evan McFarland in the top of the seventh inning. For his efforts, he was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Pitcher of the Week.

Belinda has continued his growth this season, lowering his ERA to 2.08 in 21.2 innings pitched. He recorded a 5.48 ERA his freshman year and a 3.90 ERA in his sophomore campaign.

First baseman Matt Lahn gave LHU all three runs thanks to a bases loaded 3-RBI double in the top of the third. Lock Haven had seven hits in the game thanks to McFarland (1 hit), Lahn (2 hits), designated hitter Justin Sleigh (2 hits) and right fielder Nick Stotler (2 hits).

Lahn, a 6-0 junior, is currently tied for second on the team in RBI’s with 17, trailing 24 from Hunter Szaflarski. He has also played well defensively with a perfect fielding percentage on 83 putouts, which are second on the team.

In game two, the Raiders came back to even the series with the Bald Eagles with a 3-1 win. Shippensburg got on the scoreboard first in the very first inning thanks to an RBI single by designated hitter Tommy Baggett.

Lock Haven came back to tie the game in the third inning with an inside-the-park home run by left fielder Sam Kysor, which turned out to be his only hit of the game.

Shippensburg’s starting pitcher Gabe Mosser had an outstanding performance on the mound only giving up three hits and one run in a completegame effort. Mosser also struck out five Bald Eagles in the game. Mosser earned his first win of the season in the game.

LHU starting pitcher Zach Manuppelli gave up eight hits and two earned runs in 3.2 innings of work. Manuppelli’s record drops to 2-1.

Lock Haven University baseball returns to action tomorrow (Apr. 1) against local rival Bloomsburg in a doubleheader at Foundation Fields.

First pitch for game one is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Slattery impresses coaches, teammates Eli Cooper

Staff Writer ejc8874@lhup.edu This year, the Lock Haven University softball team has gotten off to a hot start, posting a 19-9 record so far. A big reason for that is because of the excellent play from freshman pitcher Bekah Slattery.

Slattery is leading the team in ERA, with wins and strikeouts, and has been a major reason behind the team’s success this season. Her stellar play has earned her honors such as Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division II Pitcher of the Week along with Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Pitcher of the Week.

Many people have taken notice of Slattery’s strong play, including her own teammates. Senior outfielder Katie Diehl had some very high praise for the freshman. “Bekah has become a lot more confident. She knows what she is capable of and has a don’t-back-down attitude. She trusts herself and her abilities,” said Diehl.

Even head coach Kelly Shannon has been impressed by what Slattery has been able to accomplish so early in her career. “She’s had a great start and we are pleased with it. She is the consummate athlete, so she knows that she still has room to grow and improve and I think that’s the most impressive thing about her play so far,” said Shannon.

great of a teammate Slattery is outside of softball. “Bekah is an incredible teammate on and off the field,” she said. “She has such a bubbly personality and she just knows how to brighten up anyone’s day no matter the aspect,” Although a freshman performing this well probably caught most people off guard, Slattery has been ready to step up for her team since the beginning.

“I knew that when my opportunity came I would have big shoes to fill, but I was ready for it,” Slattery said. “So when our season began, I felt confident that I would do well and we would collect some great wins.”

Clearly Slattery is very confident in her abilities, but she gives a lot of credit for that confidence to her junior teammate Rachel Mouillesseaux, who is the other starting pitcher in the LHU rotation.

“She is lights out. She has been a great role model for me and she has really helped me adjust to the college level of play,” Slattery said.

Mouillesseaux’s veteran leadership has clearly had a major impact on Slattery so far.

With still so much of the season left to go, Slattery realizes she still has improvements she can make.

“Softball is a game of adjustments, so there is always room for improvement,” Slattery said. “I would say the areas of my game that need improvement still would be my bat and continuing to establish my zones on the mound.”

Slattery knows she can still get better, but that doesn’t take away from her excellent freshman season. As long as Slattery continues this level of play, we can expect her to have a great career for the LHU softball team.

Lock Haven a ‘home away from home’ for Engler Jayson Moyer

Managing Editor jpm362@lhup.edu Transferring from a Division-I school to a Division-II school obviously comes with its differences-especially when it’s from Rutgers to Lock Haven.

Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. is home to 40,000plus students. Lock Haven is home to a mere 5,000. Rutgers in New Brunswick has a train station.

People in Lock Haven may be hardpressed to know what an electric train is.

Lock Haven junior lacrosse player Rachel Engler made that transition from Rutgers to Lock Haven after her sophomore season at Rutgers, a season in which Rutgers finished 2-16 overall. Lock Haven may be small, but it is the right fit for Engler.

“I think it has been such a positive experience so far,” said Engler.

“It was a big transition going to a big school with over 40,000 kids and then coming here to a tight-knit university.”

On the field, Engler has fit the

mold perfectly of a team looking to get over the hump after falling in the Division-II National Championship Game in each of the past two years.

Engler has scored 32 goals through nine games this season, putting her first on the team in goals and points. Her 32 goals are currently second in the PSAC, trailing Emily Fagan from Shippensburg by only one goal.

She has scored four or more goals in five games already this season, including four games with five goals.

“I fit better here both academically and socially” Engler said. “I like the ability to have smaller friend groups and having my best friends as teammates.”

While moving through the transferring process, Lock Haven would have perhaps been out of the question had it not been for Engler’s high school coach at Boyertown, who is friends with former Lock Haven lacrosse coach Kristen Selvage.

“I was looking to transfer to a Division-I school, but it’s hard to transfer D-I to D-I if you don’t have a lot of film or playing time,” said Engler. “So my high school coach

said ‘why don’t you check out D-II’ and suggested Lock Haven, and everything truly fell into place so perfectly.”

However, some advice from a former high school coach wasn’t the only selling point with Lock Haven.

“I really enjoy the outdoors, and my hometown is really small like Lock Haven. This helped me in the transition because I am one of the biggest homebodies you will ever meet and it’s truly a home away from home for me.”

Lock Haven has gotten out to an early 8-1 start to the 2016 season with a relatively young team. Each season, for any team, brings a new challenge of how a team will mesh together and perform as a unit. Fortunately for Engler, especially as a transfer, she was able to click with her teammates right off the bat.

Junior Shannon Bissnette and sophomore Hayley Kilian lead Lock Haven in assists with 21 and 19, respectively.

“The team knows me as a cutter, and they have been looking for me inside,” said Engler. “It’s actually so incredible how fast I clicked with the feeders and how fast they clicked with me and the rest of the

team. Bizz and Killa are such talented feeders and everyday at practice they are constantly making me a better player with their lacrosse IQ.” Lock Haven is coming off their first loss of the season, an 8-7 defeat at East Stroudsburg on Tuesday.

However, there is always room for improvement.

“There is always room to improve, and we took our practices and executed what Coach wanted, and she wanted us to play a full 60 minute game of lacrosse,” said Engler after Lock Haven’s 18-7 win over Shippensburg last week. “We executed what she wanted and it showed by the score.”

While Lock Haven may not have an Amtrak station, a 52,000 seat football stadium or a Grill Shop like in Engler’s hometown of Boyertown, the lacrosse playing level remains high.

With only eight games left to play in the regular season, making it to Denver for the Final Four remains the ultimate goal for this year’s team.

Lock Haven will host Indiana (Pa.) on Saturday at 1p.m. at Charlotte Smith Field.
