November 20, 2014 News PASSHE tuition goes up with presidents’ salaries Kate Hibbard Managing Editor khibbard@lhup.edu The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, or PASSHE, serves more than 110,000 students and employs more than 12,000 faculty and staff, making it a powerhouse in the world of higher education providers.

Over the past few months, PASSHE has made several announcements concerning changes within the system. Here’s what you should pay attention to: Tuition may keep going up meaning the budget for higher education neither increased nor decreased tuition for the 2014-’15 school year to state-wide average of $6,820 for Pennsylvania undergraduates.

If the state’s education budget remains at $412.7 million for a fourth year, faculty and staff cuts as well as tuition increases may continue.

by Charles Thompson (cthompson@ pennlive.com), PASSHE Finance Committee Chairman Ronald Henry a way to help the schools cover “ the uncontrollable that our institutions have to deal with: pension, health care and energy costs.”

However, Henry pointed out that to continue to increase tuition might

discourage incoming students.

“There’s a point where, if you raise tuition too much, you will chase people away…” he stated.

President of the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties Ken Mash added, “We now have to do less with less, to the detriment of our students.”

Black and White Ball 2014 Students of the Black Student Union hosted their annual Black and White Ball in the PUB MPR room this past Saturday. Ladies and gentlemen had a chance to get in their formal attire and show up for a great time.

With the semester quickly coming to a close, December is fast approaching. This means winter break and many holidays. But for us hard core fans of ”Kingdom Hearts”, it also means the release of a new game on December 2. “Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix”.

“Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix+,” originally released only in Japan in 2007 for the PlayStation 2. The second game is “Kingdom Hearts Birth By Sleep Final Mix”, originally released only in Japan in 2011 for the PlayStation Portable. The cut-scenes are from “Kingdom Hearts RE:Coded”, and were fully redone in full HD, with voice actors. released outside of Japan, but there are many additions to the games that add not only to the gamers’ experience, but also to the widespread story of “Kingdom Hearts”.

Boss Battles Most of the new boss battles are optional and are not required to continue the story. However, there is one required, in “Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix”. Roxas, in the World That Never Was, was originally a cut-scene. However, in the “Final Mix”, you take control of Sora for this battle, rather than watching. This is no easy battle though! Besides preparing for the arrival of Santa and his reindeer crew, ABC is also ready to release two new series to tide over the absence of their beloved shows “Once Upon a Time” and “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” which will disappear for a long mid-season break.

“Galavant” -- described as a “comedy extravaganza” -- is a musical television series from the amazing Disney veterans Alan Menken and Glenn Slater. This fairy tale themed series is about Galavant (played by Joshua Sasse), a charming hero who is on an adventure to reclaim his honor after the evil King Richard (played by Timothy Omundson) ruined it by stealing his true love.

I’m so excited for this show not only is reminiscent of Monty Python’s “Spamalot” and “Once

Upon a Mattress” but it’s a fresh change, and I’m all for weekly musical humor. I’m particularly excited to see Omundson’s King Richard, his song and dance in the trailer about murdering people was perfectly hilarious. The trailer had me laughing to the point of almost losing a lung; I can’t even imagine how bad I’m gonna laugh at the actual show.

Meanwhile Marvel’s “Agent Carter” is showing off the amazing skills of Peggy Carter (played

by Hayley Atwell) from “Captain America”. The show is going to explore her work for the StraStark (played by Dominic Cooper) who is framed for supplying deadly weapons.

I’m so excited for the chance to see 1940’s S.H.I.E.L.D. and secret agencies, not to mention has promise especially with an amazing lead like Hayley Atwell, who doesn’t love a show with strong awesome female lead.

Arts & Entertainment The a n e r A m u Alb of an ‘Endless William Cawley Staff Writer wcawley@lhup.edu The Endless River, released by the legendary prog-rock band, Pink Floyd, came out November 10th. It is their boardist and founder Rick Wright’s death. So far, the album has received mixed reviews; here’s my take on it.

While most songs are instrumental, the album does feature vocals from physicist Stephen Hawking, in the track titled “Talkin’ Hawkin’”, as well as David Gilmour’s vocals in select songs. Yet sometimes, the sound of music is just as powerful as any word can be. But that’s just it...sometimes.

The consistent dreamy atmosphere seamlessly changes from one song to the next, which is one of the better aspects about the album, yet is no coincidence. According to Dailymail.co.uk, Gilmour said, “the new material may not appeal to younger listeners because the entire album should be listened to in one sitting rather than track by track”, and while listening, it was obvious why. The music, at times, is painfully slow.

Tracks like ‘Ebb and Flow’ and ‘Unsung’ alone don’t sound like anything special in their own regard.

While listening to the whole album, they can drift by, almost as an interlude. My personal favorite, ‘Anisina’, reminds me of ‘Great Gig in the Sky’, one of brightest points in the album.

The problem is that it only reminds me of past work and nothing more.

Without Roger Waters and Rick Wright, it is hard to compare The Endless River to, say, Animals or the masterpiece, Dark Side of the Moon. Much has changed but the subtle similarities in style comes off as, dare I say, uncreative.

Though Pink Floyd tried, the album is sub-par. College students may cal emphasis really put a damper on the overall album and its prowess on young and old fans. But if you are still curious, listen for yourself. You can it on iTunes

Side dishes to spice up Thanksgiving Do you want to try something new this Thanksgiving that will spice up your turkey? Try some new side dishes this year to spice up both the turkey and your stomach. Here are some recipes from foodnetwork.com.

2. Cinnamon Apple Cranberry Sauce 2 cups cranberry juice 1 (6-ounce) bag sweetened dried cranberries 1 cinnamon stick, broken in half 1 cup sugar 2 Gala apples, peeled, cored and diced 2 teaspoons corn starch In a medium saucepan over medium heat, add the cranberry juice, cranberries, cinnamon and sugar.

Bring to a boil and let cook for 5 minutes. Add the apples and cook, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries have softened and apples are tender, about 5 minutes.

Remove 8 ounces of the liquid to a small bowl and whisk in the cornstarch. Slowly add the cornstarch-juice mixture (slurry) to the cranberry mixture, stirring constantly. Cook for an additional 5 minutes.

Remove from heat and pour into a serving bowl.

Refrigerate until thickened, about 30 minutes.

Remove the cinnamon sticks and serve.

3. Slow Cooker Green Bean Cassarole 3 pounds green beans, trimmed and cut into 2-inch pieces (about 12 cups) 1 pound sliced cremini mushrooms (about 8 cups) Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 tablespoons unsalted butter 1 large yellow onion, cut into 1/2-inch dice (about 2 cups) 2 cloves garlic, minced 3 cups half-and-half 2 cups canned french-fried onions Directions Combine the green beans, mushrooms and 1 teaspoon salt in a 6-quart slow cooker.

Slow Cooker Homestyle Mashed Potatoes 5 pounds medium russet potatoes, peeled and cut into 1-inch chunks 12 tablespoons (1 1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, cut into 1/2-inch cubes Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 cup sour cream 1 1/2 to 2 cups milk, warm 2 tablespoons sliced chives Directions

Melt the butter over medium-high heat in a large skillet. Add the onions and a pinch of salt and cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are tender and lightly browned, 6 to 8 minutes. Reduce the heat to medium, then add the garlic and cook, stirring constantly, until the garlic is just stir constantly until it thickens into a paste, about 2 minutes. Add the half-and-half and 1 teaspoon each salt and pepper and cook, whisking occasionally, until thickened, 8 to 10 minutes. Remove from the heat and season to taste with salt and pepper. Pour the sauce into the slow cooker and stir to coat the vegetables. (The sauce will loosen as it cooks.)

Toss the potatoes, butter, 1 tablespoon salt and 1/2 teaspoon pepper together in a 6-quart slow cooker.

Add 1 cup of water, then cover and cook on high until the potatoes are tender, about 4 hours. (The potatoes might have browned lightly in spots but that is okay.)

Remove the lid and add the sour cream and 1 1/2 cups warm milk to the potatoes. Use a potato masher to smash the potatoes until they are mostly smooth. If the potatoes need to be thinned out, stir in the remaining 1/2 cup warm milk. Season to taste with additional salt and pepper. Garnish with chives.

Cover the slow cooker and cook on low until the green beans are tender but not mushy, about 4 hours. Remove the lid and stir. If the green beans look too soupy, cook for an additional 15 minutes uncovered. Season with additional salt and pepper to taste. Transfer to a shallow serving dish and sprinkle with the fried onions. Serve hot.

Make time for time management app Jennie Slota Staff Writer jslota@lhup.edu Since there is an app for almost everything you can think of in this world, why not download a useful one called Timeful to help organize and plan your day.

College is a highly stressful time between trying to succeed in the classroom and balance out all other aspects of your life including, work, sports, social activities and relationships. That is exactly what this app is designed to do.

Timeful was designed to become a personal assistant made personally for you. Dan Ariely a behavioral economics professor and a group of scientists and engineers originally designed the app for research on human behavior and productivity.

Based on a to-do list you create, the app designs and organizes a color coordinated planned out day for you.

It syncs with your Google calendar and is meant to form habits for you to be productive and complete your tasks. You can customize the settings and add your work day, sports schedule, hours you sleep, and your most productive time. The more you use the app, the more the app gets to know your habits, allowing it to customize a well-planned out day on its own to make you be more productive.

“I am not organized so this app is very helpful for me to use my time wisely,” said Lauren Dentler, a senior health and physical education major.

Many students were not aware of the app but think that is should be marketed and advertised more to college students in order to be more productive and organized.

“I am a student athlete and I believe that this would help me stay organized and make my days roll a lot easier,” said Carter.

Carter also stated that the founders should get in touch with universities and try and promote to college students to get the app promoted and popular.

Students don’t have to be the main target. Megan Wetzel, a sophomore communication major said that busy parents and workers with a lot as well.

“I think the idea of this app is awesome, however I do not think many people know about it. Maybe they should promote more through the radio or Pandora to capture a larger audience,” said Wetzel.

ven University, 35 out of 40 students were not aware that this app existed.

However 37 out of 40 of those students said they would download it to see if it helped keep them more organized and planned out to improve not only their productivity but maybe even their grades.

Reginald Jones, a senior psychology major was one of the 35 who were not aware. Once he was informed he agreed that the application would be a perfect way to stay organized and that it should be promoted among students, athletes and anyone who has a complex schedule.

Once upon a time, Black Friday was simply a hectic, one-day sales extravaganza. People listened for rumors of prized items that would be up for grabs and tried to spy through shop windows.

It was always sort of a hostile event, but like most things, it used to be a little tamer.

Now Black Friday shoppers—bless your hearts, as they’d say in the south—have to negotiate complex shopping itineraries, juggling early bird specials on Thanksgiving, door-buster deals that come with deadlines, weekend long sales events and limited supplies offers. The amount of

It would be sad if the only way our children’s children are able to experience the absolute otherworldly beauty of the Great Barrier Reef is through the recordings Google and the Catlin Seaview Survey are making. Currently, this is a very real possibility.

The Great Barrier Reef is one of the world’s most stunning natural wonders. It is kept hidden under the waves off the shores of Australia which means that most of us will never really get to experience it. Well, Google would like to help with that. They have introduced their “Street View” to the underwater beauty of the GBR and we can all log on and take a look at the splendor that it is. They have accumulated 100,000 images and will continually update the images to keep up with the changes to the reef.

This is a great way to increase interest in visiting the Great Barrier Reef but Google is hoping it will serve a more noble cause than an increase in tourism. They hope that this will be a joint effort between scientists and the public to watch for and keep track of damage to the GBR. The Catlin Seaview Survey is the organization that took on this momentous task of gathering and updating the pictures we will see under the sea. The GBR is huge at almost 1,430 miles and encompassing 3000 individual reefs. The GBR is home to at This is a project that is both hopeful and reserved in their goals. Public awareness of the GBR’s health, that it has lost almost half of its coral cover in less than thirty years, is one side. The other is to get some kind of visual record of the reef before it completely disappears if worse comes to worse and we as a global force are unable to save it.

Handling a Haven winter Nicole Creamer Staff Writer nac8638@lhup.edu It’s that time of year when the air gets dry, snow starts to fall, people get sick and holidays come faster than you would like. That’s right—winter time! Winter is not my favorite time of year (just ask anyone who complains that they are always cold). The only time I actually enjoy winter is when I have the time to get bundled up and go out and play in the freshly fallen snow. What makes winter worse is when the wind blows and it feels even colder than it actually is. Not only are there those reasons but the fact that it gets darker out sooner, which puts a damper on evening activities. Enough about my dislike of winter though, let’s get to the real problem.

I remember last winter at Lock Haven University we had one of the worst winters that we have

experienced in years. No one was prepared for multiple snowfalls like the ones we had, especially the maintenance workers. It always seemed like there was not enough salt to clear the sidewalks or that half the sidewalks weren’t even plowed or were being plowed while students walked to classes (which, if you ask me, is just dangerous and annoying).

Speaking of walking to class, that was the worst part of the day. I watched as people would walk it. Students had to essentially relearn how to balance themselves due to all of the slippery surfaces.

As if experiencing the harsh winter storms wasn’t

enough, the stairs that the maintenance workers of the overuse of salt on the stairs leading to the classrooms. It’s crazy to imagine how much money Normally, I can handle winter (even if I don’t like it) but this year I live off campus and have a lot further to walk in order to get to class. We are expected to get just as big if not bigger winter storms this year than last which means more of a chance for me to slip on the way to class. This year my hopes are that the university is more prepared for what’s to come and that they are going to evenly spread the salt and not destroy the campus again.

The campus is already hard to walk on with all of these hills but even worse in the snow and ice.

So here’s some advice, especially aimed to all the freshmen out there: get boots, get a heavy coat and get ready.

There comes a time in our lives where we must take accountability for our actions. Accountability will naturally occur as we age and often times it can be seen in a classroom, at the workplace or within the community.

I’ve been a student at Lock Haven University since 2012 and throughout those years I’ve witnessed conscientious students and on the other end of the spectrum the problematic, lackadaisical students. Most of the students here are respectful and courteous to people (at least I would hope most are) but I would like to rant about that percentage of students who aren’t.

Come on people—we all know them and see their actions, but don’t say anything. They are the ones who let the door slam in peoples face, neglect to thank the trolley driver as they depart, purposely throw garbage on the ground, interrupt professors and colleagues when they are speaking, leave drinks and food in the classouts.” Although I could list many other scenari-

os, I’ll spare you the aggravation and stop here.

Why are most people afraid to say something?

We don’t want to be different. We don’t want to stand out or stand alone. These people need to be held accountable for their actions just as everyone else in the world has to. Sure, those seem like menial offenses now, but are they really?

What if that person does not mature by the time they graduate? Could they act that way in a job interview and get a job? Or would those actions prevent them from obtaining gainful employment? That answer could differ from person to person, but it could be a problem. The point is that all issues start small, but grow and worsen when left alone or when we are silent. what it is right. We have to be the bigger person and remind these people to take accountability for their actions. Maybe all they need is a reminder. Or maybe they need a verbal kick in the behind to get them rolling in a better direction.

Regardless, be a citizen of good faith and help out these people. Even if you’re doing it alone, help these people and direct them on the path for a more rewarding life.

This just in: Coats are cool

Tuesday morning, I phoned my mom from beneath a blanket sandwich— was only 11 degrees with the wind chill back home. I decided I’d better check what Lock Haven had going on. The app on my iPhone mocked me: feels like 2 If you keep your eyes open on campus in the winter, you might spot the abominable snow-munchkin. The elusive snow-munchkin can be seen shufmetal gray, down trench coat, with something dead’s fur lining the hood. The snow-munchkin is harmless—usually it’s seen wearing headphones which render it oblivious to the world around it.

One thing is known for sure about the snow munchkin though: it is warm.

Unlike people I’ve heard in some of my classes in the last week, the snowmunchkin doesn’t care that it’s technically still fall. The snow-munchkin doesn’t ask itself if anyone else will be wearing a winter coat yet. The snowmunchkin just bundles up. …okay, I confess: the snow-munchkin is me. And I will always recklessly renounce any consideration of fashion for the sake of warmth. Might I suggest y’all do the same.

I seriously can’t count the number of people—mostly young women, though

And the excuse is always the same. It isn’t that these girls don’t have warmer winter coats. It isn’t that the coats are bulky and make maneuvering everyone else. No. It’s about whether or not it is seasonally and fashionably acceptable to start wearing a heavier coat combined with whether or not anyone else will be sporting similarly large outerwear.

That is absurd.

Maybe I’m even more socially inept than I ever thought and the rest of the student population has been silently judging me in my full-length parka, but I don’t think so. Other students haven’t selected their spring courses yet. These other students may be procrastinating. Or the university might be at fault by hindering the students from proceeding with their academic careers. pick, because they have waited their turn and came last when they were younger. Not graduate.

The next step in the university’s scheduling process is to take each class and schedule the students to pick classes by alphabetical order. This particular process is wrong. It’s simply not fair, in any way. If my last name started with Z, then as a sophomore, I would have fewer classes to choose from than a student whose name started with A. By the time I was authorized to pick my classes, I would have less of a chance to get into my desired dividing classes by year, the process shouldn’t go by alphabetical order, but instead by a random process. This would ensure each student had a more fair chance to select a desired course. when it comes to course registration at Lock Haven University.

Just because school ends doesn’t mean that the Eagle Eye has to!

Basketball drops home opener Bret Pallotto Sports Editor bmp6070@lhup.edu The Lock Haven men’s basketball team (0-3, 0-1 PSAC) was defeated by No. 4 East Stoudsburg (2-1, 1-0 PSAC) 92-69 in the team’s home opener.

Returning All-American senior Wali Hepburn lead the team with 29 (10-23 FG, 8-10 FT) points in the defeat. Twenty-two of those points came in the second half. Hepburn also added 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 6 turnovers.

Raise a Cheer, PSU is Bowl Eligible Jayson Moyer Sports Editor jpm362@lhup.edu Alas, what will be a three year drought that has seemed like three decades could end this year.

The Penn State Nittany Lions defeated Temple on Saturday at Beaver Stadium for their magic number sixth win of the season. The magic number six that means your team is bowleligible.

Jan. 2, 2012 feels like an eternity ago. Penn State lost to the Houston Cougars in the TicketCity Bowl 30-14 to end a season of total disarray – a season that was fathomed by one Jerry Sandusky and his sex abuse scandal.

That was a season that saw Penn That was a season where the Nittany Lions were ranked as high as No. 12.

However, that was a season that saw Joe Paterno relieved of his head coaching duties at Penn State, and that was a season that had every single win vacated as a part of the horPresident Mark Emmert placed on Penn State.

2011-12 is behind us now. 2012

brought a fresh perspective in newly-hired head coach, Bill O’Brien.

O’Brien led the Nittany Lions to a remarkable 8-4 record after key players such as running back Silas Redd, kicker Anthony Fera and wide receiver Justin Brown left because of the sanctions placed on Penn State.

Penn State went 7-5 in 2013, and then O’Brien left to go to the NFL. So this year rolled about. James Franklin, the hometown kid from Langhorne, Pa., was hired as head coach from Vanderbilt.

Franklin received high praise from lots of people. As I’ve said before, the guy’s energy and passion that he puts into coaching is unmatched.

What a whirlwind of a season this has been. Penn State started off Franklin was on the pinnacle of college football in Central Pa. And tions that were placed on the football program were lifted, and Penn State became bowl-eligible.

Within all that hype and excitement, Penn State proceeded to lose their next four games. An embarrassment at home to Northwestern, an unacceptable loss to Michigan on the road, a game in which Penn State -

to Ohio State, and then another unacceptable loss at home to Maryland.

Penn State had lost three in a row at Beaver Stadium. When has that ever happened?

The offense was faltering and struggling to put up points. The lack of scholarships from the sanctions was being felt – especially on the offensive line. And Franklin was being questioned for his coaching ability, especially on gameday’s.

An ugly win at Indiana ended Penn State’s four game skid, and then a win at home against Temple followed. Just like that, the Nittany Lions were bowl eligible at 6-4 on the year.

It seems like the excitement and energy is back in State College.

There are still 95,000 and maybe even 100,000 strong at every home game.

An emotional and mental rebound for this football program and this fanbase was all started by Bill O’Brien, and has been continued by James Franklin.

As you’re reading this, I want you to tip your hat to the coaches and the players of this football program. Especially the players, because what they had to endure with the bushleague that was placed upon them

was unbelievably unfair. It is undeniably true how harsh those sanctions were. The current players of the football program were hurt for no reason.

But they stayed strong. They stayed mentally stable. They worked hard. And they endured and embraced everything that came their way.

What all of this hard work and effort has led to is a football program has something to play for.

It has led to a football program with an even bigger sense of meaning. And it has led to a football program that is bowl eligible.

Whether Penn State ends up playing in the Johnny Appleseed Granny Smith Bowl in Oatmeal, Tx., I do not care. What matters here is the fact that there is a sense of achievement in Happy Valley.

Let’s embrace the chance at playing in a bowl game right now. There are many that are going to follow.

Penn State is not on the decline anymore. They are on the rise. They are rising high into a bowl game.

Over two years of horrible history and reminiscing of the past is hard to forget, but now is the time to realize that happy times – and big games – have returned to Penn State University.
