Lock Haven Jaycee’s Regatta Does It Again Caroline Clayton News Editor cec5359@lhup.edu

The 45th Annual Lock Haven Jaycee’s Regatta took place this past weekend bringing with it boat races, entertainment, carnival rides, fair food and ending the holiday weekend with fireworks.

The Regatta is an annual event in Lock Haven which beckons boaters from all over the country to compete.

There were many different vendors selling arts and crafts, raising money or selling fall decorations down the midway.

“The regatta brings the Lock Haven community together and it’s really nice to see what different vendors are raising money for”, said Courtlyn Trautman, a sophomore majoring in Health Science, Pre-PA at Lock Haven University.

Along with rides and food, there was music playing by bands including The Urge, Mason Dixon, Snug, All Else Fails and more who entertained fair goers as they enjoyed the Regatta.

“I like listening to the different bands perform,” said Zach Kemble of Marysville, “Especially when I knew a lot of the songs they were playing!”

Walking up and down the midway, people were smiling and laughing with friends and family, enjoying their time during the holiday weekend, playing fair games, winning prizes and eating deep fried double stuffed Oreos! The events ended on Monday night with fireworks along the Susquehanna River.

Lock Haven University senior, Kevin Byrne, majoring in sports administration, said “In the last three years, I’m glad I got to experience the regatta, it’s nice to see the people who live in Lock Haven that aren’t college students.”

A Shift in the Nation’s Political Climate Joanna Harlow Reporter ejh1498@lhup.edu 40 years ago, in the fall of 1975, Georgia Governor, Jimmy Carter was unknown and polled last among Democrats running for President. In November 1976, Carter, the underdog and long shot candidate, won the Presidency of the United States and easily defeating incumbent Gerald Ford.

The latest Bloomberg Politics/Des Moines Register Iowa Poll indicates that voters may once again be ready to challenge the veteran politicians and to shift the political climate.

Democratic and Republican polls in August 2015 both indicate that Americans have strong support for the less obvious and less well known candidates in the race.

“We are the underdog. But I think we’re making progress,” said Democratic candidate, Bernie Sanders in an interview with NPR on June 10. According to the polls, it seems that being an underdog might be an advantage in the race for the 2016 Presidential nomination.

In last week’s Wisconsin Democratic Party Convention Poll, Sanders ranked just nine points behind Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton.

Sanders, a Vermont senator, has risen quickly by utilizing a grassroots organizing campaign. A self-proclaimed socialist and advocate for a singlepayer national healthcare system, Sanders has gained unlikely ground

considering his polarizing ticket.

The underdog trend is evident even on the Republican front, with Donald Trump, retired neurosurgeon, Ben Carson and, former Hewlett-Packard CEO, Carly Fiorina leading the national NBC/ Marist poll.

None of the three candidates have ever held office. Presidential hopefuls like Trump, Fiorina and Carson have tapped into a strong anti-Washington sentiment among Republican voters.

“It’s a reflection of the fact that roughly 80 percent of the American people now think we have a professional political class that cares more about its own power and privilege and position than on getting anything done,” Fiorina said Aug. 16 on Radio AM 970 in New York.

The anti-establishment attitude which has made candidates like Trump popular with voters has veteran politicians like former Florida Governor, Jeb Bush and Wisconsin Governor, Scott Walker struggling to prove themselves as true endorsers of change in Washington.

The polls may indicate a strong desire by Americans for political change and a shifting away from well-known political figures. In 1976, Jimmy Carter was able to win the hearts of a public who were disillusioned by the political mess of the Watergate scandal.

Today’s public appears equally tired of veteran politicos who have family dynasties, legacies of corruption and murky histories.

Traveling Art Comes to Lock Haven to Inspire Students Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu A Largo, Fla. native is on a mission to bring creativity to the world. This past week, Paul Wislotski continued his cross-country tour at Lock Haven University.

A highway preacher, he came to inspire LHU to be a little more creative by drawing on a bed sheet. All week long, Wislotski stayed at East Campus to encourage students to draw a picture. Students drew things such as baseballs, basketballs, a toaster with wings and even a simple happy face.

Lydia Flickinger, a senior majoring in social work, was pleased with Paul’s project.

“He was very nice,” said Flickinger. “It was nice to have a religious person just talking to students.”

Wislotski’s goal is to visit at least two universities in all 50 states. He hopes that this project will bring hope to college students and maybe bring families closer together. “Please try to be creative together with friends and family,” said Wislotski, “This is one way to do it.”

So far, Wislotski has been to universities in 11 states from Florida to Oklahoma. In Pennsylvania, he visited Bucknell University and Lock Haven and plans to stop at Penn State University next. He hopes to have the project completed in two or three years.

“He did everything based on donations and simply spread the message of unity and friendship,” said LHU junior, Brad Wanamaker, majoring in Health Sciences, Pre-Pa. “It’s people like this man that this university needs on campus. It was truly a pleasure meeting him.”

Paul was at the Regatta this past weekend to let the community get involved with his pictures being shipped overseas to the U.S. troops. The Largo, Fla. native always wanted to inspire people and make the world more peaceful with his art pieces.

“I’m hoping for students to bring a bed sheet to an event like a family reunion or birthday party or holiday and get the whole family to draw something on it,” said Wislotski.

LHU tuition increase: What are students paying for now?

Katelyn Hibbard Staff Writer khibbard@lhup.edu At the end of the spring 2015 semester, Gov. Tom Wolf had many students on the edge of their seats by suggesting a total tuition freeze across all state schools for the 2015-’16 school year. When the PASSHE board of educators agreed, so long as Gov. Wolf’s budget passed as proposed in June, some may have done a happy dance.

However, the governor’s budget did not pass (nor, it appears, has any state budget proposal at this time). And, without the governor’s budget, PASSHE leaders were unable to uphold their end of the bargain.

Consequently, LHU students may have noticed they were shorted a chunk of change when they received their refunds this semester.

Tuition for in-state students increased by $240 from $6,820 to $7,060 for the standard 15 credits, according to LHU admissions’ costs and fees page.

Students attending LHU from out of state saw an increase in tuition of $600 from $15,050 to $15,650, but that’s only if they received a GPA in high school below a 3.25. According to the admissions’ costs and fees page, out of staters who managed a 3.25 or higher will only be charged $14,120 -- $1,530 less than their counterparts with lower GPAs. Along with the increase in tuition, students may have noticed some other price differences this semester.

According to collegeportraits.org, LHU’s required fees for the 2014-’15 school year amounted to about $2,366. This year, LHU estimates these fees to equal about $2,605, a difference of $239.

So, between tuition and required fees alone, in-state students are paying nearly $500 more to

attend Lock Haven University.

In order to take full advantage of those required fees, it is recommended students use the shuttles when able ($40 transportation fee per semester); get their flu shots ($90 health services fee per semester); participate in the goings-on around campus ($250 student activities fee per semester); and take advantage of the computer labs and media services in the library ($218 technology tuition fee per semester).

Though each individual cost increase may seem small right now, LHU’s tuition has been on the rise for several years -- it was raised by about 3 percent last school year. That said, it seems safe to assume college fees will continue to rise.

A word to the wise: monitor spending habits and take advantage of all the opportunities you can squeeze in, because your degree isn’t getting any cheaper.

Living a transparent life: Trans Jazz gains fans fast

Sam Shirk A&E Editor sxs1090@lhup.edu This summer, TLC broadcasted a very unique reality show called “I Am Jazz” that let viewers in to something that’s been climbing to the surface for a long time - Gender Dysphoria or Gender Identity Disorder (GID).

Gender Dysphoria is when someone relates emotionally and psychologically to the opposite gender of their biological sex.

TLC’s hit summer series follows 14-year old transgender activist Jazz Jennings and her warm, loving family as they go about their daily lives.

This unique preview lets the viewers get to know Jennings and experience some of her toughest struggles as she transitions from middle school to high school.

We get to learn her hobbies, her friends, her wacky siblings and,

most of all, her loving parents.

Whilst helping us further understand just what GID is and what measures are taken so that Jennings can live her life fully and happily as a normal teenage girl.

To say this show deserves 5 stars is an understatement. All the Jennings family seem to have an amazing personality that keeps us wanting to continue further along their life-changing journey.

We are given such an intimate portrait of their life, without the details that would endanger their safety, they make it so the viewers feel like very close friends with them. Not only that but Jazz Jennings herself makes you want to keep watching because she’s so bubbly and positive. She has a natural confidence about her.

When something happens to her, you feel it with her and she’s very open and informative on a lot of topics. You learn so much from her alone.

On top of all this,

Jennings’ mother, Jeanette, shows us just what it means to adore your children, she really gives us a clear view of what it means to protect them and she lets us understand just how close their family really is. This allows us to identify with the characters on an even more personal level.

The filming is well-done also.

Never once did there seem to be awkward shots and everyone seems to receive almost equal screen time, allowing a clear portrait of each character.

Another thing that’s well done is the way the story is told to us. There doesn’t seem to be an uninteresting part, in fact, a bathroom break in the middle will make you miss something crucial.

Seeing as Jennings is so open, we see the positives and the negatives to her situation, nothing is onesided.

In the earliest episodes, a boy is caught on camera calling her an awful name. Later on, some

of the struggles she deals with, which are normally minimal, are increased because she is transgender. We see struggles with body image, which relate to not developing as nicely as her other girl friends. Problems with school activities, like not being able to play on the girls soccer team without a fight. We even see issues with friends and relationships, an example being boys being hesitant to hang out with her and her friends because she’s different.

“I Am Jazz” being aired is a step on the path leading to acceptance, a feat our country is slowly starting to move toward.

TLC has not said anything as of yet about a second season but hopefully there will be one because it was truly a wonderful experience, I recommend it.

Juicy J quenching musical thirst with 100% Juice

Jordan Houston, known by his stage name, Juicy J, is best known for his hard trap hitting music that can be heard at any college party.

J’s most recent album release, ‘Stay Trippy,’ released in 2013 as well as some earlier albums were all we had from him and his solo career. While J appears on countless amounts of artists tracks it’s about time we get to hear something directly from the man himself.

100% Juice is one of the hardest hitting mix tapes I have gotten the chance to listen to in a long time. It seems as if J has almost mastered trap rap. With a large assortment of artists featured on the mixtape like, Wiz Khalifa, Lil Wayne, Boosie, Future and more, it’s clear J wanted to do this album right. With a fire squad back-

While I do think trap rap is starting to take the charge for mainstream rap it still only caters to a select audience. The best way I could compare 100% Juice to other trap music would be Future’s ‘Honest’ album.

Except 100% Juice is 100% better.

This mixtape is the perfect partner in crime if you are looking to release some energy and go out for a night on the town. 100% Juice has this quirky ability to transform rapping about sex, drugs, and gang banging into a way to understand a life unfamiliar to many.

With heavy bass and horror like melodies 100% Juice will knock you on your butt and make you wish you bought a bigger subwoofer.

This is one of my favorite trap mix tapes of 2015 without a reasonable doubt. I have been anxiously waiting for Juicy J to drop some new music and it’s just in time for college parties to find that extra oomph to turn up to.

fun on ‘Fury Road’

Two years ago, back in my column writing days, I wrote about one of my favorite sci-fi films: “Mad Max”.

Here I am talking to you again about the Australian wasteland brought back to life in the new movie, “Mad Max: Fury Road”. Let me tell you, this movie has blown the classic franchise wide open like a giant tricked-out semi-truck flipping and exploding while someone shreds on a flamethrowing guitar.

George Miller made a come back to direct this movie, which initially made me nervous because I still have not fully recovered from how a certain other returning director treated the Star Wars franchise. How dare I doubt the talent of Miller though, how dare I. The movie stars Tom Hardy as Max Rockatansky and Charlize Theron as Imperator Furiosa.

You definitely don’t need to watch the original trilogy to watch this action-packed masterpiece. I’m not going to really tell you the plot because I feel the movie is best enjoyed knowing little. But it is essentially a 120 minute car chase across the desert and involves a flamethrowing guitar, sniper grannies, lots of explosions and Charlize Theron being a boss with a mechanical arm.

Ladies, listen to me, you are going to love this movie. You are going to raise your kids watching this movie. This movie will get you psyched up and on the edge of your seat BUT without any needless stupid gore, swearing or sexualizing females. Hidden beneath the macho exterior is a movie pulsing with badass women fighting in their own way for themselves. Seriously, the underlying theme of toxic masculinity is fantastic.

Even more fantastic are the stunts! Over 80 percent of the effects in this movie are real practical stunts. Let me repeat that: over 80 percent of the effects are real. So when you see a giant exploding truck while individuals are pole vaulting over it, that’s really happening. And it is beautiful.

Speaking of beautiful, the entire cinematography of this film is amazing, the use of colors and centerframing shots create a genuinely artistic action film that dazzles the eyes. The use of color is especially unique, with vivid yellows and blues, something that you usually don’t see in an action movie let alone a sci-fi dystopian movie.

This movie is the best action film I have ever seen, and everyone and their mom needs to see it. Seriously, go buy “Mad Max: Fury Road” which is now out on DVD and Blu-Ray. It’s well worth the money and you’ll be watching it again and again.

With the season airing this month, the show has released its contestant lineup for this season.

Tamar Braxton Singer, talk show host and reality television personality, Braxton has been in the spotlight since 1990 as a member of The Braxtons, along with her sisters. Her dance partner will be Valentine Chmerkovskiy.

Gary Busey Actor, famous for movies like “Dr. Dolittle 3” (2006) and “Behaving Badly” (2014), he has also guest starred in “Law & Order” and “Entourage”.

His dance partner will be Anna Trebunskaya.

Nick Carter Famous for being a member of the Backstreet Boys, he has also released two solo albums and starred in a VH1 reality series. His dance partner will be Sharna Burgess.

Paula Deen Celebrity chef famous for her southern cooking, she has published 14 cookbooks and has shows on television. Her dance partner will be Louis Van Amstel.

Victor Espinoza Famous jockey who earned the Triple Crown earlier this year when he won the Kentucky Derby. He is the first Hispanic jockey to achieve this. His dance partner will be Karina Smirnoff.

Bindi Irwin Daughter of the famous Crocodile Hunter, Steve Irwin, she is a wildlife conservationist and actress. Her dance partner will be Derek Hough.

Chaka Khan International music icon, she is a ten-time Grammy Award winner with the ability to sing eight different music genres. Her dance partner will be Keo Motsepe.

Alexa PenaVega Movie, television and Broadway actress, she will be facing her husband this season. Her dance partner will be Mark Ballas.

The Nationalism in Northern Ireland is just as passionate as what you may be used to in this country or even more. I encourage you to research more about this astonishing area and visit it when you have the chance.

This column will be a new weekly feature in The Eagle Eye during this fall semester. Each week the reader will be introduced to a new city or region within a country. Lock Haven University’s Institute for International Studies offers a large variety of affordable options for studying abroad that gives one the opportunity for visiting these amazing destinations.

Belfast and Northern Ireland Northern Ireland was the first country I visited outside of Scotland when I studied abroad last year. This forgotten country is one of four that make up the United Kingdom; it is located on the most northern part of the island in Ulster Province. Its capital, Belfast, is a city that has faced many troubles in past years but is now emerging as a tourist hot spot in Ireland featuring the world’s largest museum dedicated to the Titanic, the very dock where Titanic was built and the studios in which Game of Thrones are filmed. Also, one can visit the peace walls and neighborhoods to discover the history of the troubles between Catholics and Protestants.

Beyond Belfast lies a beautiful rolling countryside and one of the most picturesque coastal roads in the world. One of the most striking passages is along the way, north from Belfast through County Antrim towards Londonderry/Derry. You will see castles, have the opportunity to cross over a rope bridge, visit Giant’s Causeway (a UNESCO world heritage site) and see the world’s oldest whiskey distillery.

Unique to Ulster is the essence of being in Ireland with many influences from their British neighbors across the sea. A little over half of the people there are proud to be in the UK and wave the Union Jack while the rest want to be with their brethren from the south in the Republic of Ireland.

Classes have started and everyone is trying to get back into studying and homework mode (especially me). It’s not that easy, especially if the thought of cracking open the books again makes you cringe. It’s tempting to check Facebook or Tumblr, text a friend or play a game just to procrastinate a little bit longer. But there’s a simple app, one you never knew you needed, that can help set aside the temptation for just a little bit.

The app is called Forest and it’s designed to keep you off your phone for intervals of thirty minutes so you can focus on homework. You simply open the app and plant a tree. Planting this tree starts a timer and during the thirty minute countdown, your

tree will grow. If you leave the app for any reason, your tree will die and you’ll need to start all over again.

When the thirty minutes are over, a chime sounds and you’re free to stop or plant another tree for more minutes of productivity.

The app isn’t amazing or spectacular but it is useful and the goal is simple: to have as many trees as possible in order to have a forest of productivity. The more trees you have, the more homework you have done.

Simple.

We all have trouble putting our phones down. Every beep and bloop destroying any shred of focus we may have gained but this timer can help.

At the end of August, I found myself in an entirely unfamiliar situation. An explosion of back to school advertisements and statuses about my friends returning to college surrounded me, when – for the first time in 16 years – I wasn’t going back to school.

As a very recent LHU alumna, I felt slightly out of place. I was employed but it was seasonal, and I had yet to apply to anything in my field.

For a moment, I wanted to come back to what was familiar and certain…school, even if it meant paying tuition.

However, reality set in and I reminded myself that I could survive outside of the daily drudge of classes and homework. I chose to set up an action plan that may be useful to any new or upcoming grad, to help me adjust to my new life and encourage me to make something of my new free time.

1. Resume the résumé When I sat down to look at it, I realized that I hadn’t updated my résumé since a few months before graduation. It didn’t include anything about my final semester, like my final GPA or academic awards. I also reviewed it to make sure I had included any relevant work experience.

2. Build a portfolio With today’s technology, I was lucky enough to find several good website hosts to create an online portfolio. Even if you aren’t a communication major like I was, there are plenty of works that you can include – research projects, PowerPoint presentations or images that show you working in your field.

3. Make job sites part of your web history I visit job search websites on a daily basis.

So far, my favorite is Indeed.com because it lets you upload your résumé and apply directly through the website.

4. Check up on your loans After I graduated, I found out that there is a repayment plan that might work best for the unemployed graduate. Income based repayment options take more work because you have to reapply annually, but it adjusts to fit how much money you make and can afford to pay back.

5. Remember to relax Job-hunting is a full time job, so take a breather every now and then. Otherwise, you’ll get paranoid about being homeless and unemployed while your student debt piles up.

Study Abroad Stories: Scotland Amanda Thomas Lifestyles Editor Act6730@lhup.edu Every student that goes abroad has an amazing, unforgettable experience, myself included. But once we come back, no one cares about our stories anymore. We go about our lives as if nothing had happened and don’t talk about our adventures. But here, study abroad students get to tell their stories again.

I studied abroad in Glasgow, Scotland in the Spring 2014 semester and had the best experiences, traveled to the coolest places, and met the most amazing people. One of my favorite trips was actually the most boring but it’s filled with some special memories.

One of the most famous places in Scotland is Loch Ness but it’s actually a really uninteresting place to visit. Nessie doesn’t make an appearance no matter how long you stare

at the loch and the town is really small and quiet. But to get there from Glasgow you need to drive through Glencoe: my favorite place in Scotland that I had visited on a previous trip.

The mountains are spectacular and the most accurate description is breathtaking. Those mountains make the four hour drive worth it.

Once we got to Loch Ness we visited the Urquhart Castle, a ruin sitting right on the loch.

Ruined castles are as common as office buildings in Scotland. They seem to be everywhere but each one is uniquely cool.

We then visited a small farm that had horses and highland cows wandering the hills but had none in sight. We went on a “cow hunt,” determined to find the missing cows. We trekked through the dirt and trees and found the horses first. They came right up to us and ate hay from our hands.

We searched high and low and finally came upon a few cows enjoying the little sun that was

peeking through the constant cloud cover. Our guide said it was okay to touch them but never specified how. (You are apparently supposed to touch their head.) With their huge horns they were intimidating but never got up from their spots as we approached. I touched one on it’s back and it scared both the cow and me. We both jumped apart and that was the end of my cow-petting experiences.

Next we visited the famous Loch Ness sign. Here my friends from Canada and France stripped to their suits, donned water wings and jumped into the freezing water. They swam with Nessie for as long as it took for them to sprint back to shore. I stayed warm in my winter coat and gloves. The entire day was full of beautiful sights, cool history, new experiences and lots of laughs.

I sincerely miss Scotland and know that I will go back one day. Until then, at least I can say that I had tea with Nessie.

Hello from the Editor-in-Chief Kathleen Ellison Editor-in-Chief kae742@lhup.edu I started out in the Eagle Eye like many have before me: by taking candy from a stranger.

Little freshman Kathleen was walking along during the club fair when she was lured by the promise of lollipops to sign her life away via an email list. And so began my tumultuous journey through this campus newspaper.

I was immediately given a column despite having absolutely no experience or knowledge whatsoever of working or writing for a paper. In spite of that – by some mysterious magic that is the Eagle Eye – I learned, and that column became my

pride and joy.

I can’t describe the way you feel when people tell you that they read your column, or the eagerness you feel when someone is enjoying your work. It’s sort of a mix between finding a $5 bill in your pocket and killing it in Mario Kart as you watch the friendship slowly die in the eyes of your components. You’re equal parts surprised and happy, but also conceited and apprehensive. Plus, sometimes there’s crying and yelling.

Regardless, the Eagle Eye is where I learn and live. Sometimes that involves Disney sing-alongs or giant forts in the office. Also sometimes that involves crying in the archives or smashing random buttons in InDesign. In the

end though, I gained not only amazing friends who bought me a cake on print night for my birthday, but amazing skills that I’m going to use for the rest of my life.

Freshman me wouldn’t be able to write a 300 word article in 15 minutes. She also wouldn’t have known anything about how to act in interviews. And she definitely wouldn’t know anything about working in teams or creative problem solving. The Eagle Eye taught me all of that.

I’m looking forward to learning more as the new Editor-in-Chief, and I hope – no, encourage you to come join us and learn too. What is the worst that can happen? You’ll have a lollipop and some new skills?

Label soup cans, not people Connor Poorman Staff Writer cmp7673@lhup.edu Throughout the last few weeks, or rather the last few months, I believe we’ve all been paying attention to the news. News can influence anyone’s opinion. The main idea I want everyone to understand from most recent news is that we label everyone.

What do I mean by labeling? Regardless if it is for good or for ill, we name things without even noticing. We often label people based on handicaps and, especially, race.

One of the most frustrating things I see is that on most applications, employers still make it a priority to ask about the potential employee’s race. Do you believe that this is appropriate or inappropriate for the times ahead?

Of course, this is just my opinion, but perhaps instead of asking what race you are, the important and much bigger question at hand

should be whether or not you are cleared to legally work in the United States. This has been the topic of much heated debate, but my message resides elsewhere. The message here is this: We need to occasionally remind ourselves that we’re all human, regardless of position, social status, handicap and race. I understand that my message is vague, however it is supposed to be like that. There are many possibilities in the world, the idea being that we need to just take a moment and really think about what is going on around us, especially the people around us.

All of that being said, I also understand, for the most part, we all know better than to take something at face value. I again will pose the question of appropriateness of inquiring about one’s race for employment. We already see the effects of labeling and profiling in recent news - what effect will this have on society in the future?

The second season of the James Franklin era at Penn State didn’t necessarily float like a butterfly, nor did it sting like a bee. Instead, it descended faster than a skydiver without a parachute and fell just as softly as a bug landing on your shoulder.

However, coming from a Penn State fan’s perspective, the Nittany Lion’s 27-10 embarrassing loss to Temple on Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field did sting like a bee, perhaps worse.

After taking a 10-0 lead early in the first quarter, the Nittany Lions showed more of what we saw for most of last season: A bad offensive line, a quarterback lacking confidence, horrible choices made by the refs and inept preparation from the coaching staff.

Last fall, I had written multiple times that Penn State’s head coach, James Franklin was not doing an adequate job of in-game coaching, but I also knew that he had to be given a chance. After one full season and a full offseason, we should expect to see adjustments and ultimately improvements with this football team.

We didn’t on Saturday.

There are many people on which to place the blame for Penn State’s first loss to Temple in 74 years. You can blame quarterback Christian Hackenberg, you can blame the offensive line, but to me, 90 percent of this falls on the coaching staff.

And it all starts with Franklin.

Franklin showed an inability to adjust during

the game on Saturday, hence his in-game coaching being sub-par. The playcalling leaves the projected first round pick Hackenberg out to dry. The offense is baffling to me.

Whether it is Franklin or offensive coordinator John Donovan calling the plays, they refuse to take shots down the field with Hackenberg. Hackenberg missed DaeSean Hamilton on a deep route down the sideline which would have been a sure touchdown to put Penn State up 17-0 and changed the complexity of the game.

But for the rest of the game, there were no shots taken down the field until there was less than a minute left in the game. That’s when Penn State was KO’ed. That pass was completed, too.

It’s these continuous, short, rinky-dink passes that Hackenberg has a hard time completing. It is bubble screen after bubble screen, five yard slant over the middle after five yard slant, with deep shots down the field being a rarity.

The lack of a running game does not help the situation because to have an effective passing game, you need to be able to run the ball, but this offense is not for Hackenberg, and Franklin will not adjust to utilize his talents better.

This is the same quarterback that put up 20 touchdowns and only threw 10 interceptions as a true-freshman under Bill O’Brien. Hackenberg is a pro-style quarterback, which is the exact offense O’Brien ran. I still can’t figure out what type of quarterback is ideal for Franklin’s offense.

The coaching incompetence does not stop with Franklin and falls right onto the lap of offensive line coach, Herb Hand. Hand, who seems to be the most active college football coach on Twitter in the

nation, comes off as the least active college football coach in the nation when it comes to putting together a gameplan.

If Hand’s job is not on the line after Saturday, it should be shortly if this problem persists. The offensive line, which was atrocious last season and allowed Hackenberg to be sacked 44 times, returned four starters this season, and Hackenberg was sacked TEN times on Saturday at Temple.

It took Hackenberg one game to reach a quarter of his sack total from last season. 44 sacks in a season is an insane amount.

Hackenberg doesn’t help his cause either. He seems to be lacking confidence as he continually refuses to step up in the pocket or run and pick up three yards instead of losing seven. Maybe it is a product of bad coaching, maybe it’s a bad offensive line, maybe it’s the offense or maybe it’s a combination of all three.

The bottom line is that Franklin needs to show improvement each week this season, and it starts at home against Buffalo on Saturday. Franklin needs to be able to adjust and to be able to prepare effectively.

It is one thing to be an outstanding recruiter, but you have to be able to put it together on the field, too.

One thing matters, and that’s winning. And if this type of football continues and the losses pile up, Franklin is going to realize that Happy Valley could turn into Frustrated Valley.

Franklin’s trial begins on Saturday, and his goal should be to finish this season floating like a butterfly, while stinging opponents like a bee.

Field Hockey Off to Best Start Since ‘04

The Lock Haven University field hockey team has pushed their record to 4-0 in the young season. It is the best start since the 2004 season.

The ladies have recorded wins at home against William & Mary and Ohio along with two road wins against Cornell and Towson.

In the four wins this season, the LHU defense has allowed just two goals. Junior Paige Stuppy and senior Maddie Wagenfield have each seen significant time in goal.

The offensive production has been spread around thus far. Reigning Field Hockey Player of the Week and team captain, Rachel Valentine, leads the team with three goals. Colleen McCabe, Tamia Roach and Kiersten Cepeda are all tied for second on the team with two goals. Stephanie Whiteman and Danalee Degannes have each found the back of the net once for the Bald Eagles.

Pat Rudy, who is in her 20th season as Lock Haven field hockey coach, will lead her team on the road against Colgate on Sunday, Sept. 12 at 1 p.m. The team will return to Charlotte Smith Field on Friday, Sept. 18 to play Richmond at 3 p.m.

Cross Country Outdueled by Penn State Alex Wahl Staff Writer ajw7885@lhup.edu The Lock Haven University women’s and No. 11 men’s cross country team started the 2015 season on Friday, Sept. 5, hosting the Dolan Duals against Division-I power Penn State University at Foundation Fields.

The event kicked off at 6:00 p.m. with the women’s 4K race. Penn State, currently ranked No. 23 in the Division-I rankings, came away with what appeared to be a walk in the park victory with a final score of 15-50. Penn State had nine runners finish in the top 10 with Tori Gerlach winning the race in 14 minutes.

Senior Alexis Arnold was the first Lock Haven runner to finish. Arnold finished eighth with a time of 15 minutes and 1 second.

“I was surprised with how well I did,” said Arnold. “I really didn’t think I was going to do that well and I’m glad that the other girls did well too.”

Heading over to the men’s 6K race, Lock Haven did their best to keep up with the Nittany Lions, who received some votes in the Division-I rankings, but ultimately fell short, 19-41.

Lock Haven had three runners finish in the top 10, including senior, Dylan Mountain, who finished second with a time of 17 minutes and 49 seconds. Penn State’s Ean DiSilvio won the race with a time of 17 minutes and 41 seconds.

Head coach, Aaron Russell was thrilled with the way his teams performed against a tough Penn State squad. “Mountain finishing second is huge for him and we practice twice as far as a regular race,” said Russell. “This is a short race for these guys and they looked stronger at the end.”

Lock Haven cross country teams will travel to Penn State on Friday, Sept.

11 to compete at the Spiked Shoe Invitational.

Week Two Preview: at Seton Hill Jayson Moyer Sports Editor jpm362@lhup.edu The Dave Taynor era at Lock Haven University hasn’t necessarily begin with the bang the program was looking for.

Lock Haven (0-1) fell to Clarion 40-13 on Thursday night at Hubert Jack Stadium. Clarion more than doubled the Bald Eagles in time of possession with a 40:35-19:25 edge.

The Eagles were outgained 519-401 in total offense, ran 27 less plays than Clarion, turned the ball over six times including five fumbles and had eight penalties for a total of 109 yards.

This was obviously Taynor’s first game as head coach. Learning curves are to be expected, as he didn’t even have a full offseason to work with players and implement his new system. Improvements will be made but a head coach adapting to a new school, as well as players adapting to a new head coach, is a process that takes time.

Redshirt junior quarterback, Caleb Walton completed 20-27 passes against Clarion for 206 yards, two touchdowns and a pick. He also carried

the ball 12 times for 56 yards.

In 11 games last season, Walton completed 54 percent of his passes for 1,156 yards and nine touchdowns. It was Walton’s first full season as a starter.

Junior running back, Malyk Harris led Lock Haven in rushing yards and by carrying the ball eight times for 91 yards. Senior running back, Beau Swales had five carries for 47 yards. The Bald Eagles did outgain Clarion 195-112 on the ground.

Senior wide receiver, David Cook had six receptions for 73 yards, leading Lock Haven on Thursday in both receptions and yards. A bright spot for Lock Haven was wide receiver Shawn Seif, who caught five passes for 51 yards and two touchdowns.

On the defensive side of the ball, junior defensive back, Rahjeir Miles-Eubanks, had 11 total tackles and an interception. Linebacker Tony Ballon had nine total tackles as well.

Looking ahead to Saturday, the Eagles will travel to Seton Hill (0-1) for a 3p.m. kickoff.

Seton Hill leads the all-time series 1-0, with the only meeting coming last season when Seton Hill defeated Lock Haven 27-16 at Hubert Jack Stadium.

Seton Hill bolstered a tough running game, outgaining Lock Haven 193-76 on the ground.

Walton threw for 240 yards, had two touchdowns and two interceptions last season against Seton Hill. Cook caught eight passes for 153 yards and a touchdown, and Swales had five receptions for 43 yards and a touchdown.

Seton Hill is coming off a 64-14 loss to Shippensburg in week one and will be looking to rebound.

This will be the first of five road games this season for Lock Haven.

The Lock Haven University volleyball team, which was picked second in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Preseason Poll, has begun their young season 1-3.

Head coach Dan Krieger’s team opened the season with a 3-0 victory over Daemen (N.Y.), but then dropped the next three contests against Ohio Dominican, Carson-Newman and No. 7 Grand Valley State.

Sophomore Sarah Gomish, an All-PSAC East second team award winner last season, leads the team with 42 kills. Junior defensive specialist, Sydney Belcastro is the team-leader in digs with 68.

The team is set to play their first home match of the season this Friday, Sept. 11th against Wayne State at Thomas Fieldhouse in the Angelina Miele Tournament.

The tournament is named after Angelina Miele who signed as an honorary member of the Lock Haven volleyball team on Feb. 22, 2015. On July 30, 2015, the 11-year old passed away after a brave battle with cancer.

To honor their former teammate, the team is selling special bracelets and t-shirts in Miele’s honor.

The bracelets are being sold for $5 and the t-shirts are being sold for $10. All proceeds from the sales will be donated to the Cancer Center at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia in Angelina’s name.

Angelina’s mother, Brenda, was moved by the gesture to honor her daughter with a tournament in her daughter’s honor.

“When Coach Kreiger contacted me about honoring Angelina with a

tournament in her name I was much honored,” said Brenda. “The money raised will go back to the cancer center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia which is a place that I put all my support into. I hope to live to see a day when there is a cure for this devastating disease called childhood cancer.”

Coach Kreiger fondly remembers Angelina and what she meant to those around her. “Angelina was and always will be a special part of our team,” said Kreiger. “She had a profound impact on all of us, even in her short time with us.”
