Dean publishes 27th book on global sports Cassandra Keller Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu John Nauright, dean of the Stephen Poorman College of Business, Information Systems and Human Services at LHU, published his 27th book, “Routledge Handbook of Global Sport”, on Jan. 20 of this year. The book was published with Sarah Zipp, a professor at Stirling University in Scotland.

Nauright met Zipp through planning a study tour in Europe. From there, Nauright worked with Zipp, mentoring her and collaborating on four other books and journals, making “Routledge Handbook of Global Sport” their fifth collaboration. Nauright said, “It’s one of those things that’s really exciting when the student begins to outpace the teacher.”

“It [“Routledge Handbook of Global Sport”],” according to Nauright, “is a sport by sport approach covering what has been written about it[ a sport] and what the sport is about to give the reader an overview of a particular sport.”

The book covers a variety of global sports including, but not limited to: soccer, American football, Australian football and even darts. “It’s [Routledge Handbook of Global Sport] a book for students who have an interest in a sport who may want to do more research on it, but don’t know much about it,” said Nauright.

Through this book and his other books, Nauright said, “I think they[students] will get an understanding of the similarities and differences between different sports and the way sports may resonate in different societies.”

As a kid, Nauright had atlases that he enjoyed reading about the different places around the world. He would also read about the different sports in those places he would read about. As Nauright furthered his education, he studied around the world in places like England and Canada. Today he is a visiting professor at Lomonosov Moscow State University in Russia, University of the West Indies in Barbados and the University of Ghana.

That interest he had as a child and travel as a student and professor led him to the study of global sports and the 27 published books he has today.

Nauright doesn’t plan to stop there, however. Along with Dain TePoel and James Mattern, both of which are sport studies professors here at LHU, Nauright plans to collaborate on a book focusing on the global expansion and organization of baseball. Nauright said, “It’s[the book on baseball] kind of like academics meets Wikipedia with a little bit more depth.” Students who are interested in the topic are welcome to get involved.

The J-Lo and Shakira show

Kiara Carson Managing Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu Superbowl LIV was featured this past Sunday, February 2, and had Shakira and Jennifer Lopez grace the stage for the halftime show. The women did an excellent job and really brought the house down with their amazing singing and dancing, beautiful outfits, and great representation of Latin pride.

The two performed their respective old hits to playing music made by other artists. The dancing incorporated a lot of Latin styles like merengue and salsa while Shakira showed us some traditional Colombian moves. They even invited Colombian rapper J Balvin and Puerto Rican rapper Bad Bunny to perform with the ladies. In all, the acts exhibited a fabulous display of Latin love and excellence.

Additionally, they used their platform to start a discussion of some of the issues in today’s society that America and the current president overlook on a daily basis. For example, Lopez decided to walk out wearing the reversible flag which featured both American and Puerto Rican flags, it was a statement that seemingly said, ‘Puerto Rico is still a part of the United States and to not forget about it.’

As many know, Puerto Rico was recently hit with a series of earthquakes. The island also issued a tsunami warning that has the potential to devastate the land and people, yet there hasn’t been action taken by the United States to help.

Puerto Rico has been a U.S. territory for over a century now,

but it seems to never receive help from the country that acquired it all those years ago. Inhabitants keep losing their homes and land over natural disasters, but the biggest disaster is that they’re also being ignored.

The halftime show also included a scene where children dancers were sitting on the stage in little cages to represent the current issues of immigration. It’s to remind people that this is what’s happening to children who get taken away from their parents who are deported out of the country for being “illegal.” The scene’s goal was to shock people back to reality and hopefully stand up in order to help those who really need it.

Unfortunately, there were a lot of people on social media who responded negatively to the show, making oversexualized remarks about what the ladies were wearing and racially fueled comments about the Puerto Rican flag and Spanish music.

Others had decided to respond back to those people and educate them about all the ignorant things they were saying.

This shows how much of a powerful impact the Super Bowl Halftime Show has amongst others who can appreciate different cultures. All in all, the show was executed beautifully and showcased that some things are more important than football.

“Empire” is an enticing television drama that touches on the topics of violence, hiphop, sacrifice, love and family. The show debuted in 2015 on FOX and has been on air ever since.

The show starts with one of the main characters and mother of the family, Cookie Lyon, getting out of jail after seventeen years. She comes home to her three sons now fully grown, her ex-husband moved in and moved on with another woman, and the music empire she built with her exhusband wildly successful. Being locked away for nearly two decades with very little visits from her family had Cookie enraged. She continues with this rage throughout the rest of the show.

Lucious Lyon, Cookie’s ex-husband, is a tyrant over Empire Enterprises. He’s ruthless and willing to do absolutely anything to push his own agenda. At times, he’s kind and generous, but he’s typically not seen that way by anyone, even his family. Lucious never loses, no matter what.

The other members of the Lyon family are Cookie and Lucious’ sons: Andre, Jamal,

and Hakeem.

Each family member has their own plotline that is followed throughout the seasons, along with a few other supporting roles. I feel as though that the multiple stories are what makes this show so interesting. There’s so much to follow, to remember, to keep an eye out for. On top of that, each episode is jam-packed with action, whether that be violence, passion, a mental illness crisis, robbing, a theatrical show, hospital visits, and more.

Original music sung by the cast is added to almost every episode. These songs are available on Apple Music and Spotify. Usually these songs coincide perfectly with events occurring in the show.

I love this show for its raw energy and how it captivates you, both in good and bad ways. The characters are casted very well; their acting is moving. The show has so much thought put into it. “Empire” is a must-watch for people who love music and suspense. You can watch it on FOX, Hulu, or YouTube TV.

Here’s a list of Bentley dessert hacks: 1) Ice cream floats- It might not seem like it, but you can get ice cream floats if you order your ice cream the right way. Just take a cup up to the ice cream counter, order one scoop of vanilla ice cream or any kind of ice cream you want and then fill it will any kind of soda you want from the soda fountain.

2) Apple pie sundae- Upper Bentley has a microwave that students can use. You can warm up an apple pie when they have them available and then get a scoop of ice cream on the side.

3) Toasted PB&J- There is a toaster near the waffle maker. There you can get bread and make toast however you want. Then you put peanut butter and jelly on it to make a healthy dessert.

4) Ice cream cookies- When there are cookies, you can make them even better when you warm them up and put a scoop of your favorite ice between two of them. You can even top this ice cream treat with sprinkles and chocolate syrup.

Tips to start off the semester

A good way to achieve a stress-free semester (or at least minimize the stress) is starting the school semester strong. Here are a few simple ways to improve your success: Step one get yourself a planner. With so many classes, a social life, and possibly work to juggle it’s easy to neglect a deadline. Getting a planner and writing out all of your important deadlines, work schedule, and any social obligations will be useful to time management.

Step two: eat breakfast. Breakfast may not be the most important meal of the day depending on one’s values, but eating breakfast has been linked to improving memory. Memory is known as the thing that helps a student remember what they studied when taking an exam. Perhaps a desirable ability to the average student.

Step three: relax. It is easy to get overwhelmed when trying to get back into the swing of school. Students may feel rusty with their learning skills, and feel overwhelmed looking through all the course work in the syllabus. Remember to take a step back and take assignments one at time. There is no need to burn yourself out when classes have only just started.

Step four: set a routine. It might seem mundane to get into routine, like some college verison of working 9-5, but having one makes choices easy. Is there time to go hang out? When should I go to bed? Establishing a set daily sequence takes the guesswork out.

You’ll know how to fit in your 8 hours of sleep and know when it is time to buckle down and get work done. If you stick to the routine at least.

9 Best things about the spring semester

1. New school supplies- there is nothing better than having the illusion of getting your life together.

Soon the temperature will pick up and start shorts season.

2. Back to the #DormLifewhile living in the dorms may not always be the most glamourous, it does provide most freedom. Your choices are safe from family judgement.

5. Reuniting with college friends- Going home from the break is always nice and a good opportunity to reconnect with the past. However, it does make you miss your school friends.

3. Getting closer to completing your degree- College is an experience and a time of significant growth, but we all came here for a reason right? Getting out and being in the workforce.

Cassandra Keller Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Re “How #MeToo Is Smashing the Casting Couch (The New York Times, Jan 30) I agree with you that the #MeToo movement has brought a lot of awareness to the problems in Hollywood and the entertainment industry, but your article leaves out a lot of the other contributions that the movement has brought in change and awareness too.

The simplest being the Raise the Wage Act, H.R.582. The #MeToo movement brought awareness to the widespread problems involving sexual harassment in not just the entertainment industry, but every industry, including resturant works. When working on tipped minimum wage, tips are everything. Customers could easily sexual harasse a work-

er before the #MeToo movement and they wouldn’t report it because they would lose their tip which often times was more than half their pay.

According to congress.gov, the Raise the Wage act will help to get rid of the tipped minimum wage and make it somewhat easier for workers to report when a customer sexually harasses them. #MeToo brought these problems into the public eye and has helped to give the act the steam it needs to get passed.

Christian Kelly of the men’s basketball team led the Bald Eagles to a 1-1 record this past week defeating Shepherd on Saturday afternoon. In his two games this past week, Kelly combined to score 41 points and collected 10 rebounds. Both of his scouring outputs were game highs with 17 against East Stroudsburg and 24 against Shepherd. Kelly shot 16-27 from the field sporting a 59% field goal percentage in his past two games.

Karina Long led the way over the weekend at the Bison Open. The sophomore standout hit PSAC marks in the long and triple jump events. She opened the day with a PSAC mark in the long jump after placing second overall (top DII finisher) with a season-best leap of 18-01.00. Long came back and placed sixth in the triple jump with a season-best (#PSAC) mark of 3506.00.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s indoor track & field team performed well at the two-day (Jan. 31 – Feb. 1) Bucknell Bison Open, competing yesterday and today.

The Bald Eagles added to their list of 2019-20 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) individual championship qualifying marks and hit a number of season-bests.

Day 1 (Fri, Jan. 31) - Leading the way on Friday (Jan. 31) was sprinter Riyana Owens (Red Lion, Pa./Dallastown) who ran a PSAC mark at 200 meters (26.02). Ana Concepcion (Allentown, Pa./Louis E. Dieruff) and Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad & Tobago/ Bishop Anstey East) pushed closer to PSAC marks at 200 meters with times of 27.18 and 27.31, respectively.

Karlee Noel (Altoona, Pa. Altoona) and Elaina Klinger (Danville, Pa./Danville) cracked the top-10 in the 5,000-meter run. Noel was seventh with a time of 19:26.81 and Klinger was ninth with a run of 19:42.57.

Hannah Weddle (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) hit a seasonbest in the shot put with a throw of 34-00.75.

Day 2 (Sat, Feb. 1) - Leading the way today (Sat, Feb. 1) on Day 2 action was standout Karina Long (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) who hit PSAC marks in the long and triple jump events. She opened the day with a PSAC mark in the long jump after placing second overall (top DII finisher) with a season-best leap of 18-01.00. Long came back and placed sixth in the triple jump with a season-best (#PSAC) mark of 35-06.00.

Owens shined at 60 meters, placing third overall with a sizzling PSAC mark of 7.82.

The Bald Eagles grabbed a pair of PSAC marks in the weight throw, thanks to the efforts of Weddle and Arianna Moyer (Enola, Pa./Bucknell). Weddle threw for a mark of 43-

04.50 (14th) and Moyer hit a mark of 43-04.25 (15th).

Brathwaite ran a PSAC mark in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.47. She was sixth overall.

At 500 meters, Josie McKendree (Johnstown, Pa./Forest Hills) placed ninth with a time of 1:29.65.

Rachel Grow (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) was third overall in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 3:21.43.

Billie Jo Bollinger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim) scored a season-high 2,944 points and was third overall in the pentathlon “blue” event.

The LHU women closed the meet with a 4:14.39 effort in the 4x400-meter relay. The time marked a season-best time for the Bald Eagles in the event.

Up Next: LHU will return to action on Saturday, February 8 when the Bald Eagles compete at the Utica College Blue and Orange Invitational.

R.I.P Kobe Bryant Mark Matthews Opinions Editor mjm2923@lockhaven.edu On January 26, the whole world was in shock and disbelief as reports came out that Kobe Bryant lost his life in a helicopter crash in California. In addition, the eight other passengers with Bryant succumbed in the crash, including Kobe’s 13 year old daughter, Gianna who was a basketball player herself as well.

Kobe Bean Bryant, known as the “Black Mamba” was a five time NBA champion who spent all of his 20 seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers. Additionally, he was a two time recipient of the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award and was winner of the regular season MVP award of the 2007-08 season. Bryant was selected to the NBA All-Star team 18 times as well.

Many emotions and gloominess spreaded around the country when the Bryant death news became official. Bryant was not just a really talented basketball player. The impact he developed towards fans and family members made it that much more difficult to fathom his death.

Many Twitter posts became public as the news came out. Miami Heat rookie guard Tyler Herro on his tweet said, “Every team has to retire 24.” Herro was referring to Bryant’s jersey number for the Lakers.

Herro’s idea of this act of solitude for Kobe Bryant spread to other teams and players. Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban already announced they have retired number 24.

Many players changed their jersey numbers to honor Kobe.

Some players such as Terrance Ross, Maurice Harkless changed their number 8 jersey to honor and respect Kobe. Others kept their jersey number to respect him, including Indiana Pacers players Justin Holiday and Alize Johnson. Holiday kept the number 8 jersey number and Johnson kept the number 24 jersey number.

Los Angeles Lakers guard Quinn Cook did a unique tribute by changing his number 2 jersey to 28 to honor Gianna’s number 2 jersey and Kobe’s 8 jersey at the same time.

Brooklyn Nets guard Spencer Dinwiddie changed his jersey number from 8 to 26 to honor Gianna and Kobe. 26 is symbolic

to Dinwiddie, because 2 (Gianna’s number) + 24 (Kobe’s number) equals 26.

Bryant received an immense amount of tributes to honor the legend. Many tributal Instagram posts went viral as fellow NBA players including LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Carmelo Anthony. James’ post began, “I’m not ready but here I go. Man I’m sitting here trying to write something for this post but every time I try I begin crying again just thinking about you, niece Gigi and the friendship/bond/brotherhood we had!” Ironically, the night before Bryant’s passing, James passed Bryant for third all-time in career points.

At the first Philadelphia 76ers home game on January 28 against the Golden State Warriors the Wells Fargo Center honored Bryant, Gianna, and the seven other victims on the helicopter crash with nine bell rings. Also during the national anthem, the jersey of Bryant’s high school, Lower Merion was displayed in the center of the arena. Lower Merion High School is right on the Philadelphia Main Line suburbs, where Bryant resided during his childhood.

Current Lock Haven senior guard Christian Kelly gave his words of how Kobe impacted his journey in basketball. Kelly said, “He impacted me in life a lot not just in basketball but generally speaking. On his approach with the game of basketball the hard work, detail, accountability, responsibility and leadership aspects it takes to become a great player and a winner.” Kelly added, “Kobe said give it you have so you don’t feel any regret that you did not put forth all the time and energy you could have to accomplish your dreams.”

Kobe Bryant throughout his career had many inspirational quotes. Bryant’s famous slogan of “mamba mentality” is the mindset he will stamp for everyone to remember for a lifetime. One other quote that stood out was when he said, “Heroes come and go, but legends are forever.” This quote stands out because even though Bryant is gone, he will always remain impactful for generations to come.
