Gov. Tom Wolf visits LHU Cassandra Keller Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Gov. Tom Wolf visited LHU on Wednesday to launch a tour of the 14 state-owned universities and discuss his proposal to help thousands of low- and middle class students afford a college education, the Nellie Bly Scholarship Program.

Wolf proposed the Nellie Bly Scholarship Program, a historic 204 million dollar need based scholarship that will close the gap after a student’s Pell Grant and other state grants to enroll in a Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) university.

“The Nellie Bly Scholarship Program fills the gap after other aid programs so thousands of students can afford a college degree without crushing debt,” said Wolf, “This scholarship would help students get a college degree and spend less time paying off student loans and more time building a career in Pennsylvania.”

The Nellie Bly Scholarship is a last-dollar-in program. To be eligible, students must enroll fulltime in a PASSHE undergraduate program and qualify for a federal subsidized student loan.

Wolf said, “We want these Pennsylvanians to feel good about getting the education we need them to get.”

Students must commit to live in Pennsylvania after graduation for the same number of years they received the scholarship. If a student leaves the state early, they must repay the money. The program will be funded by repurposing revenues from the Horse Racing Development Fund annually.

“This is an investment in the future of our students and incentivizes them to stay in Pennsylvania after graduation,” said Governor Wolf.

“With less college debt, graduates can buy a car and a home, start a family and save for retirement. The program also strengthens our public university system and creates a talented labor force that Pennsylvania needs to thrive.”

“The strength of Pennsylvania’s economy and the vibrancy of its communities depend so much on students who graduate with career-oriented, affordable degrees,” said PASSHE Chancellor, Daniel Greenstein, “This program represents Gov. Tom Wolf’s commitment to our students and to maintaining public higher education as the engine of social mobility and economic development that it’s meant to be.”

“Access to a degree leads to life changing opportunities for our students that positions them for work in an ever-evolving economy, moves them into the middle class and beyond and builds stronger communities.

But for too many of them the cost is beyond their reach,” said Robert Pignatello. “Governor Wolf’s Nellie Bly Scholarship Program recognizes this and makes a valuable investment in them and the future economic vitality of the commonwealth.”

The scholarship is named in honor of Nellie Bly, an Armstrong County native born in 1864. Bly attended the Indiana Normal School, now Indiana University of Pennsylvania, but left due to the cost. Bly became a pioneering journalist who helped to force reforms to the mental health care system in the early 20th century.

Nearly a century later, higher education remains too expensive for many low-income and middle-class families. The student loan debt for Pennsylvania residents is $68 billion, among the highest in the nation, averaging over $37,000 per student.

In addition to the $204 million for the Nellie Bly Scholarship Program, the governor’s budget invests in higher education with $12.9 million to support PASSHE’s system redesign and a $60 million increase for the Pennsylvania State Grant Program, which serves more than 130,000 students and will increase the maximum award to $4,700.

“We shouldn’t be piling tens of thousands of dollars of debt on to young Pennsylvanians who have the drive and commitment to spend their time studying while they’re in school,” said Gov. Tom Wolf

“Frozen 2” movie review

Krissy Turner Lifestyles Editor kat5346@lockhaven.edu The movie “Frozen 2” is about returning characters Anna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven leaving Arendelle to find the origin of Elsa’s powers and to free the trapped Arendelle guards that were there for years. Elsa hears a voice calling to her that her dad had said he heard years ago, so she wanted to follow it. Little do Elsa and Anna know that there is some secret family history that is the answer to freeing the Arendelle guards and finding the origin of Elsa’s powers.

The cast consists of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Josh Gad, Jonathan Groff, Sterling K. Brown, Evan Rachael Wood, Alfred Molina, Martha Plimpton and Jason Ritter. It is directed by Chris Buck and Jennifer Lee. “Frozen 2” came out November 22, 2019.

I thought the actors did a fantastic job of playing the characters because they made the movie fun. The actors also put some emotion into their characters. I saw the first “Frozen” movie and thought it was really good because the songs were catchy as well as easy to sing along to.

The music in the movie was awesome because they give you a feel for the characters. A couple of the songs gave me the chills like “Some Things Never Change,” “Into the Unknown,” “Show Yourself,” “The Next Right Thing” and “All is Found.”

Kristen Bell is known for projects like “Veronica Mars,” “Zootopia,” “Frozen,” “Scream 4,” “Burlesque,” “You Again,” “When in Rome,” “Couples Retreat,” “Astro Boy,” “Heroes” and “Forgetting Sarah Marshall.”

Idina Menzel is known for projects like “Frozen,” “Glee,” “Enchanted”and “Wicked.” Personally, she was also married to Taye Diggs and has a son.

Josh Gad is known for doing projects like the “Angry Birds” movies, “A Dog’s Journey,” “Murder on the Orient Express,” “Marshall,” “Beauty and the Beast (2017),” “Pixels,” “The Wedding Ringer,” “Frozen,” and “Marmaduke.”

Jonathan Groff is known for doing projects like “Glee,” “American Sniper” and “Frozen.”

Mark Matthews Sports Editor mjm2923@lockhaven.edu The Oscars, also known as the “Academy Awards,” took place on Feb.9. People from the most popular films were gathered at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.

The movie, “Parasite” dominated the night, earning four honors. The movie won the motion picture, director, original screenplay, and international feature awards. It was actually the first time a non-English film won the award for best motion picture.

Universal’s film “1917” earned three victories with the visual effects, cinematography, and sound mixing awards.

Three films won awards twice throughout the night. Warner Bros’ “Joker” won two awards with lead actor Joaquin Phoenix coming out on top, and another for original score award.

Sony’s “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” earned the production design award and the supporting actor award (won for Brad Pitt).

20th Century Studios’ “Ford v Ferrari” won the film editing and sound editing awards.

Other individual awards were given out during the ceremony as well. The best actress award was given to Renêe Zellweger who played as Judy Garland in Roadside Attractions’ “Judy.” Laura Dern won the supporting actress award for Netflix’s “Marriage Story” while acting as Nora Fanshaw. Taika Waititi won the adapted screenplay award as director

in Searchlight’s “JoJo Rabbit.”

Other notable awards were Pixar’s “Toy Story 4,” which was the recipient for the animated feature prize. Additionally, Paramount’s “Rocketman” won the original song award.

There were many memorable moments during the ceremony. Rapper Eminem made a surprise appearance at the show and performed for the crowd. He received a standing ovation as he ended his performance.

Kobe Bryant received tributes from various individuals. Filmmaker Spike Lee wore Bryant’s number 24 on a purple shirt. In the Memoriam tribute, Bryant was honored with a picture showing a quote, “Life is too short to get bogged down and be discouraged. You have to keep moving. You have to keep going. Put one foot in front of the other, smile and just keep on rolling.”

The Oscars award ceremony was a time for films, actors, producers to be honored, but it is also a critical time for bondiness and closeness. It reminds us that staying close as a community is crucial because it is where people are there for each other. Examples like the Bryant tribute are essential to reminding the public how blessed we are for one another.

Valentine’s Day for single people

The reason is because they may feel like they’re singled out or they feel like they’re missing out on all of the good stuff about being in a relationship like kissing, holding hands, communicating with someone who wants to spend the rest of their life with them and the little gifts that they can get from someone they love.

Some ways for single people to get through Valentine’s Day can be to surround yourself with friends, Spending time with family, going for a walk, listening to music, watching TV or movies or even just reading a book. Just doing other things to get your mind off of the fact that they’re single.

Surrounding yourself with friends can help you deal with being single because if they’re single as well, they probably know how you’re feeling. If they aren’t single, then they’ll support you and tell you to be patient and that the right person will come along. Having friends around will also make single people feel less alone.

Spending time with family can be a good way to get through Valentine’s Day if you’re single because they may or may not give you hope that the right person

will come along. All families are different because they may have different values and beliefs.

Going for a walk is a good way because it can clear your mind and help single people to think about something else other than being single. It’s good exercise for them too!

Listening to music is good because not only can it help single people to clear their mind of being single but it can also help them either escape from the idea that they’re single or it can give them hope that someone is thinking about them. It depends on what songs they listen to. It could also help them feel less lonely.

Watching TV or watching movies would have the same effect as listening to music. It could either help single people escape from the idea that they’re single or it can give them hope. It depends on what they watch. It could help them feel less lonely as well.

There is one big question on people’s minds at the beginning of February: what do I get my significant other for Valentine’s Day? Couples that have been together for a while may have already run through the standard teddy bear, chocolates and are looking for something outside of the box to get their partner.

New couples may want to avoid getting something cheesy or cliched but not knowing what to do in place of the traditional gifts of the holiday. Here a few ideas if you are lacking creativity.

Jar of compliments. It’s exactly what it sounds like. Get a mason jar filled up with little pieces of paper with compliments for your boyfriend or girlfriend. Whenever they are having a bad day or really miss you then they can pull out a compliment or a reason you love them. It is a simple and cost-effective gift with a lot of sentimental value.

Keychains. There are plenty of key chains out on the market with a romantic little inscription on them to give to your partner.

Amazon, for instance, has a wide selection of these. There one’s that say “drive home safe I need you here with me” or “I love you with every pizza my heart” with a little pizza charm attached. There also many of his and her key chain sets available.

Write him or her a book. This may sound like an off the chart idea, but it is more attainable then some might think. Bookofus. com provides a templet for a book about your relationship with your partner. First, you create your charters to resemble you, pick a book cover, and write the pages of your love story. Don’t be discouraged if you don’t feel like a writer there are prepared pages with lots of good ideas you can add to your story.

Cord Organizer. Perhaps not as romantic as the typical Valentine’s Day gift, but not everyone is sappy on the holidays. A cord orga-

nizer is a practical gift for day to day use. It can carry a phone charger, computer charger, headphones, and perhaps a few more things depending on what size organizer you get.

5 things to avoid on a date

Valentine’s Day is the day that’s supposed to be about love and romancing that one special person in your life that makes your heart beat so fast it could burst! Unfortunately, not everyone has the same experience because most people aren’t even into the whole idea of love or know anything about being romantic.

These people are usually the ones you want to avoid going on a date with, but if you do happen to get duped by one of these people in your life then don’t worry because you’re not the only one.

In fact, I’ve been on so many horrible dates that I’ve now become really perceptive about what aspects of your date can lead to a terrible ending instead of a loving one. Here are 5 things that can potentially ruin your whole dating experience: 1. The location- this is a very important aspect of dating because certain places can make it very difficult to get to know or even talk to your potential partner.

For example, the movies are a cute idea, but there’s no time for conversation unless your date has something else planned afterwards like a nice dinner.

Then they’re really on the right track! Other locations to avoid, especially for a first date, are the mall, their home, and the gym/exercise class.

2. No gifts- they’re not really required for every date, but on a day like Valentine’s day its more than likely expected to receive something cute to be buttered up in a way.

But if your valentine doesn’t have anything to give you on this special day then your motivation to keep the date going in a positive light might be diminished.

Fellas, when in doubt buy her fresh f lowers or even a cute stuffed animal just to make her feel a bit uplifted otherwise you might get a cranky pants instead.

3. Bad connection- no one ever wants to go on a date with someone who doesn’t really speak to them in a spiritual, emotional, intellectual, or sexual way, but it may very well happen.

We have so many dating apps these days that people can just go

on there and say whatever you want them to in order to score a chance with you.

Then, you end up with someone that definitely has nothing in common with you in which you can easily respond by politely ending the date, clearly letting them know that you’ll never see them again.

4. Terrible manners- this should be a huge deal when out on a date especially if it’s the first one you’ve ever been on with this person.

Let’s just say that being rude, having a nasty attitude, being selfish, proving to be something you’re not, and lying in general will get you a one-way ticket to the doghouse.

5. An audience- you know that saying “two’s a company and three’s a crowd”? Well, its true!

Especially when it’s Valentine’s day and you want a little alone time with that beautiful person in your life, but you can’t because maybe roommates, friends, or even family members are running around being in your business and ruining the mood.

Which further backs up my previous point to not have your dates in a home you share with others unless you know for sure it’s going to be empty and if it is then you might get even more brownie points!

It’s no secret that parking seems to be a pain point among college students on several campuses across the United States. According to the New York Times, the University of Wisconsin-Madison has one parking space to every five people, and approximately 65,000 students.

The campus plans to add an additional 2,200 parking spaces over the next twenty to forty years, which seems like a long time for a campus and student body that is continuously growing. In fact, the application rate at the University of WisconsinMadison increased from 2017 to 2018 by 20%. Transportation and parking remain an ongoing issue among campuses everywhere.

A college student at Florida Atlantic University recently highlighted her frustrations with campus parking. “I was rushing to class for a Monday morning lecture that began at 8AM. At 7:59, I was nowhere near the building for my course because I had to park so far away. I awkwardly walked in at 8:17 and interrupted the professor’s lecture. On top of that, I needed to arrive early to put finishing touches on a paper that was due at the beginning of class. If I had access to better, more reliable modes of transportation, I would take it.”

Among the many public state universities, most are thousands of acres wide.

The University of Florida, for example, is sprawled over 2,000 acres of land. With bus systems unable to service the demand and not enough parking space for students, students need an alternative transportation solution that is timely and efficient.

Autonomous vehicles have become a de facto mode of transportation for the future. While we’re still in the early stages of the evolution of this technology, fixed-

course autonomous shuttle vehicles could be a true transportation solution for college campuses.

The use of controlled-speed timed shuttles that would allow students to travel between campus destinations will be revolutionary for universities that experience crowding or issues with parking.

Autonomous shuttles can be a more efficient and eco-friendly method of transportation for students as well as providing a more relaxing mobility environment.

Rather than students parking their vehicles, and then traveling via foot to class, they can relax and work on schoolwork while the shuttle takes them to each destination.

In fact, autonomous shuttle technology has already been introduced to several universities as a means of transportation.

The University of Michigan and California State University have both recently incorporated autonomous shuttles (also known as “people-movers”) onto their campuses.

Furthermore, autonomous shuttles will be able to help students with physical disabilities where walking for what can sometimes be up to a mile to get from one class to another is difficult.

While most universities have disability services available, very few of them include efficient, timely transportation.

Providing an easier way to get around campus will greatly improve the overall college experience for disabled students and faculty.

Another benefit of autonomous shuttles is the safety. Autonomous Vehicle technologies are advancing and improving every day. Today, an AV does not see and interpret its surroundings exactly as a human would and therefore lacks a certain level of intuition.

But, on the other hand, autonomous vehicles react to motion and events at a rate of two to three times faster than a human can and the use of artificial intelligence will continually improve the needed interpretive logic which will ultimately create a much safer transportation mode than human driven vehicles.

Most importantly, autonomous vehicles don’t get distracted by their surroundings or mobile devices like students and other drivers can. According to the 2016 Fatal Motor Vehicle Crashes report

by NHTSA, human error and poor judgement are the leading causes of traffic accidents and deaths on our roadways.

Federal and local governments, insurance companies, the medical community, and other groups are pushing for the introduction of autonomous vehicles to reduce this alarming statistic. There is plenty of research to validate that autonomous vehicles and equipment will dramatically improve safety in all applications, making campuses safer when autonomous transportation is deployed.

In conclusion, with parking continuing to be an increasingly difficult (and expensive) problem on college campuses, providing students with an alternate mode of transportation could solve many campus transportations issues while providing other benefits.

Bringing autonomous shuttles to college campuses would greatly improve the overall safety and productivity of the students, teachers and staff and having innovative, eco-friendly and convenient options increases the attractiveness of campus life – an important consideration in the college selection process.

Christian Kelly of the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team was named this week’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Week for the Eastern Division.

Kelly reached the 1,000 point plateau in a 91-74 win over Kutztown on Saturday as he poured in 26 points to hit the milestone.

On his historic Saturday afternoon, Kelly paced all scorers racking up 26 points and 10 rebounds. With 4:18 to go in the game, the senior guard drew a foul and went to the line for the momentous free throws. Kelly then drained both free throws with ease to the delight of the Haven faithful. Kelly was a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line and added two blocks and two steals to his performance.

Senior Rileigh Devine of the LHU women’s basketball team had a huge week for Lock Haven as she hit her 1,000th career point.

In the midweek win over Mansfield, Devine knocked in 17 points including five three pointers and seven rebounds.

Devine’s three-pointer with 6:07 left in the second quarter marked her 1,000th point as a member of the Bald Eagles.

In a tight loss to Kutztown on Saturday, Devine led all scorers pouring in a season high 26 points. The sharpshooter was 9-17 from the field including 5-8 from beyond the arc.

Bald Eagles dominate the Utica Invitational Doug Spatafore

UTICA, N.Y. – Led by double-winner Laurel Moyer (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), the Lock Haven University women’s indoor track & field team put together an around dominating effort and the Bald Eagles headlined the Utica College Blue & Orange Invitational field today with individual wins, 2019-20 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship qualifying marks, season-bests and more.

Moyer won the mile and 3,000-meter run and capped her two wins with a fourth-place finish at 800 meters. Riyana Owens (Red Lion, Pa./Dallastown) posted a win at 60 meters, Karina Long (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) won the long jump and the Bald Eagles 4x200-meter relay turned in a historic outing.

Owens and Long teamed up with Ana Concepcion (Allentown, Pa./Louis E. Dieruff) and Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad & Tobago/Bishop Anstey East), and the four ran 1:46.37 for the win, besting second place by four seconds and topping the seven-team field with the third-fastest time in Lock Haven history. It was the fastest time run by the Bald Eagles in nearly two decades.

Moyer won the mile with a time of 5:21.53, a PSAC mark.

She was first of 24 in the race and won by nearly eight full seconds. She was fourth in the 800 with a season-best and PSAC time of 2:20.98, before winning the 3K with a PSAC time of 10:25.59, capping a remarkable triple. Moyer’s time in the 3K is one of the fastest in the PSAC this season and she won today by 23 seconds.

Long won the long jump with a PSAC and season-best leap of 18-04.25. She was first of 41, before adding a second-place jump in the triple jump. In the triple jump event, she hit a mark of 36-08.50, a season-best and PSAC effort.

Owens won the 60-meter dash with a time of 7.84. The time established a new facility record and the PSAC time was just shy of her season-best. She ran 7.88 in the prelims. Owens, a key member of the Bald Eagles historic day-opening relay effort, was busy and she added a strong showing in the 200. At 200 meters, Owens was fourth with a PSAC time of 26.42.

Lock Haven scored big in the 5,000-meter run and the 500-meter run. Elaina Klinger (Danville, Pa./Danville) ran 19:27.23 in the 5K, which was good enough for third out of 26 and a season-best. Karlee Noel (Altoona, Pa./Altoona) was eighth in the 5K with a time of 19:49.43.

At 500 meters, Tia Judy (East Prospect, Pa./Homeschooled) was sixth (1:27.15) and Josie McKendree (Johnstown, Pa./Forest Hills) was seventh (1:27.70).

Arianna Moyer (Enola, Pa./Bucknell) was fifth overall in the weight throw with a big season-best mark of 46-03.25.

Billie Jo Bollinger (Manheim, Pa./Manheim) added a sixth-place showing in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.70, a PSAC time. In the prelims, she ran 9.57.

Lock Haven tallied 91.5 total points today, the second most of any team in the 23 team women’s field.

Up Next: LHU will be back in action next weekend – Friday & Saturday, February 14-15 – competing at the Fasttrack National Invitational (Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex in Staten Island, New York) and Boston University’s David Hemery Valentine Invite.

Why watch NASCAR Mark Matthews Sports Editor mjm2923@lockhaven.edu The 2020 NASCAR campaign is right around the corner. The Daytona 500, the first race of the season, is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 16.

The preseason race, “Busch Clash” took place on Feb. 9 at Daytona International Speedway. Erik Jones won the crash-filled race with a push by teammate Denny Hamlin who finished a lap down. Jones’ car pictured below, one with damage in his hood.

Only six of the 18 drivers finished the race. Austin Dillon finished second, Clint Bowyer third, Kyle Larson fourth and Ryan Newman fifth, the final car on the lead lap.

There is a lot of excitement and anticipation for the season.

This season will be seven-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson’s final season as a full-time driver. Johnson’s last race win came on June 4, 2017 at Dover International Speedway. Johnson’s attempt to break this winless streak will be a storyline to

Many proven NASCAR XFINITY series (series below the Cup Series) drivers will start their rookie campaigns this season.

These drivers include two-time reigning XFINITY series champion Tyler Reddick, Christopher Bell who snagged five wins this past XFINITY series season, Cole Custer who also won five races in the XFINITY series last season, John Hunter Nemechek who has one career XFINITY win and six career Gander Outdoor Truck Series wins and Brennan Poole.

The battle for Rookie of the Year honors is expected to be one of the closest battles in series history.

A lot of unknown outcomes are expected in this year’s NASCAR campaign making this season ideal for a non-NASCAR fan to watch.
