LHU Communication professor publishes new book

Conne Reece, a professor of Communication at Lock Haven University, teamed up with employment strategist, Fred Coon to publish the book “Ready, Aim, Hired: Job Search Tactics that Really Work.” This book focuses on helping people gain employment or change careers.

Coon is a nationally recognized job and careers transition expert. He and his team have helped thousands of individuals make their best career moves.

For Reece, she specializes in job search strategies which include resume and cover letter writing, e-portfolios, and interview techniques.

In 2021 at a National Resume Writers Association, she and Coon met and kept in touch before ultimately asking to rewrite an older edition of “Ready, Aim, Hired.” After being told she could, Reece was given a year-long sabbatical.

“My favorite part of the book is the chapter on resumes, Chapter 5, because it contains all of the essential elements of how to use your most important job search tool to get your foot in the door.

Most people don’t understand that it’s all about tailoring each resume to the job description and using actual numbers to back up claims of success,” she said. “Just providing a list of job duties, but no proof of how well performed those duties, won’t cut it. You really have to know what you are

doing. The chapter on resumes guides you step by step.”

Throughout the book, you can find exercises, examples, and ways to improve yourself in an interview as well as ways to improve to even get an interview. Some exercises include making a brand for yourself, resume writing, cover letters, online presence, and many more topics.

“I have always been passionate about teaching students what they need to know to get a job. Students spend tens of thousands of dollars on education, but many don’t know how to turn their degrees into dream jobs,” said Reece.

“The Center for Career and Professional Development is a tremendous resource, but many won’t use it. I wanted to provide a link between the classroom and the future that could be used by all students regardless of major. Of course, Ready, Aim, Hired can be used by anyone at any stage in his or her career, so it has broad market appeal as well. Fred Coon, the original author, is a leader in the job search industry. Working on this book with him was an honor.”

Any students interested in reading the book can order it on Amazon either digitally or in a physical copy.

Reece also teaches the class, Topics in Communication: Job Search Tactics, in which she and her students utilize the book to have a better understanding of the job world.

ISIS leader killed in Syria Levi Deitz Opinions Editor lwd6487@lockhaven.edu

President Joe Biden announced the killing of ISIS leader Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi alQurayshi on Feb. 3.

Biden spoke from the White House on Thursday, announcing that al-Qurayshi had blown himself up as U.S. Special Forces approached the building that he was in.

The blast also killed several civilians, although U.S. special forces were able to evacuate ten people from the building, eight of whom were children. According to the Pentagon, there were no U.S. casualties.

Biden stated “Knowing that terrorist had chosen to surround himself with families, including children, we made a choice to pursue a Special Forces raid at a much a greater risk to our own people rather than targeting him with an airstrike.”

According to CNN, this was the largest U.S. raid in the country since 2019. That operation killed another ISIS leader in Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. An anonymous Pentagon official told CNN that both ISIS leaders used the “same cowardly terrorist tactic” of surrounding themselves with family members, including women and children.

CNN stated that the U.S. Special Forces “announced their presence loudly,” and began calling for people in the building to get out. Moments later, the detonation occurred, killing al-Qurayshi, his wife, and his children.

According to U.S. officials, the blast occurred before any U.S. forces entered the building. They entered the compound because a different top ISIS lieutenant lived on a floor beneath al-Qurayshi.

After the U.S. forces entered the building, the lieutenant barricaded himself in the building and was killed after engaging them.

Senior administration officials said that the U.S. had known for months that alQurayshi was living on the third floor of the building, and that he and his family never left it. Families with no connection to ISIS lived on the first two floors, and reportedly had no knowledge of the terrorist above them.

“I’m grateful for the immense courage and skill and determination of our U.S. forces who skillfully executed this incredibly challenging mission,” Biden said.

“Howl’s Moving Castle” - A Timeless Masterpiece Kit Taveras Lifestyles Section Editor mxt9438@lockhaven.edu

It is no exaggeration to say many of Studio Ghibli’s—an animation studio focused in Tokyo, Japan—films have inexorably stood the test of time over the past several decades, both for the quality of their animation and the heartwarming, inspirational stories they tell.

“Howl’s Moving Castle,” one of these many popular films, serves as a wonderful example of this and has stapled itself as a classic with audiences all around the world. The premise, though strange, is actually quite charming in its simplicity.

The film focuses around a young woman named Sophie, who deems her life uninteresting and uneventful prior to a confrontation she has with the nefarious Witch of Waste. Now turned into an ugly old lady, Sophie seeks out her fortune and stumbles upon a strange castle and handsome wizard named Howl.

Avoiding spoilers, the film tells a story detailing the importance of being compassionate to-

wards others and enjoying one’s life to the fullest.

In the director, Hayao Miyazaki’s, own words, this film is one of his favorite creations as it shows how life should be enjoyed and spent in a way that is worth living.

As the protagonist is transformed into an old woman, it portrays old age as something to be cherished, as it grants Sophie freedom and wisdom.

It is also worth noting that the film contains anti-war themes, as it was created as a result of Miyazaki’s opposition towards the United States’ invasion of Iraq in 2003. This theme is present in the character Howl himself, as he seeks to avoid war and doesn’t want to fight for his king.

These messages, as well as its strong inclination towards feminism and female empowerment, make the film well-aged despite the years since its release, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a heartwarming film with a strong and intelligent lead.

Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong walked off the set of “The Masked Singer” after Rudy Giuliani was revealed as a contestant of the show.

The walk off was in protest of Rudy Giuliani’s past few years as a divisive political figure as well as his affiliation with former President Donald Trump.

During the first taping of Season 7 of “The Masked Singer,” two of the four judges, Jenny McCarthy and Nicole Scherzinger, remained onstage to talk and joke around Rudy Giuliani while Jeong and Thicke swiftly exited the stage.

According to People.com, Ken could not hide his feelings about the former president’s attorney.

He was “incredibly vocal about how the previous administration handled many things but especially COVID-19…”

This is not the first time the show polarized audiences and judges with political headpieces, as Sarah Palin was unveiled in 2020 as The Bear.

Palin’s appearance was surprising to many and created a stir of negative reactions online. However, the reaction to Giuliani’s reveal was the most polarizing and is so far the only case where a judge left

the stage on the show.

Giuliani’s recent controversial take on the recent 2020 presidential election, his affiliation with Donald Trump, and his suspension from practicing law in the state of New York has put Giuliani in some hot water. His suspension from practicing law was a decision made by a court of appeals who state that he was making “demonstrably false and misleading statements” in regard to the 2020 election results.

His recent appearance in the Borat sequel film “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm” as well as sweating an exaggerated amount during a speech has left some concerned or confused with his behavior.

The seventh season of “The Masked Singer” will premiere on Fox on March 9th.

All music connoisseurs look forward to each new year because with every year brings new music. While some new releases can be considered “flops”, fans are still appreciative of the new content. This article will discuss the anticipated albums that have and will be released in the year 2022.

1. “Sick!” – Earl Sweatshirt Calling all hip-hop music lovers, this album is for you. Released on January 14, the main genre is hip-hop. There are a total of 10 songs. This album is Sweatshirt’s reflection on his state of mind during the COVID-19 pandemic.

3. “Laurel Hell” - Mitski The album was released February 4. There are a total of 11 songs that are emotional-pop and largely electronic. In the album, Mitski expresses her dislike for being framed in the music industry as just an indie-rock artist.

4. “Donda 2” - Kanye West This album is the sequel to his other album “Donda”. The album is hinted to be released the 22nd of this month. Future is going to be the executive producer of this album.

5. “Crash” - Charlie XCX The set release day for this album is March 18 with an experimental pop genre. This will 2. “Dawn FM” - The Weeknd be Charlie’s last album released under record This album is for all pop-music fans. The label, Atlantic Records. The theme of the algenres of the album are synth-pop and dance- bum cover is inspired by Janet Jackson. pop. There are a total of 16 songs with a length of 51 minutes and 49 seconds. The album was released January 7.

Ah, Valentine’s Day—the staple holiday for those seeking to send and receive gifts to or from their significant other. Valentine’s Day to some is an almost sacred tradition, and so we will be sharing below some traditional ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day with your lover of choice (or by yourself, if you so choose).

Gifting flowers. One of the most popular gifts to give someone on Valentine’s Day. A fancy bouquet can never go wrong in order to impress the person you fancy, even if you don’t know if they’re into you and want to gift them anonymously. Just make sure your person of choice isn’t allergic first!

A big box of chocolates. A lot of chocolate can go a long way. Though they can be a bit pricey, high-quality chocolate is sure to make your giftee swoon! Whether their preference is nougat, caramel, or anything and everything in between, most boxes have a little bit of everything to offer! Once again, please take into consideration that allergies may hinder a person’s ability to thoroughly enjoy your present, however.

Fancy dinner date. Though this is one of the more cliché options it can be effective all the same. The restaurant doesn’t necessarily need to be fancy, either! Going anywhere with a good atmosphere can lead to some serious heart-toheart conversations, thus strengthening your bond even more!

Exchanging gifts with each other. Though the first two options listed here mention specific gifts, these gifts can be virtually anything!

Whether it be stuffed animals, other types of candy, new clothes, or something high on your partner’s Amazon wishlist, so long as it is something they enjoy you’re sure to bring a smile to your partner’s face!

However you choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day this year, take both your and your partner’s likes and interests into consideration. This is supposed to be a happy day for both of you, after all!

Valentine’s Day is upon us. Don’t worry if you forgot! Here a few fun date ideas that can be done in a snap.

Take them on an indoor picnic. Let it be known you could hike it outside, but it’s a tad chilly. For the faint of heart try recreating the outdoor vibes with a few flowers, blanket, and a meal. Setting up shop in your dorm room or in the common eating area are recommended spaces to hold an indoor picnic. Cute, sweet, romantic, and cost-effective.

Dorm-in movie theater date. Get a projector for a blank wall in your dorm, and heat up some popcorn. Don’t forget their favorite movie theater candy, the coziest blanket get-up, and PJs to add to the atmosphere!

“Have it their way” pass. This would be letting your S.O pick all the activities for the entire day. Quality time letting your partner do some of the things you’re normally too stubborn to is an amazing gift that requires zero planning.

Dance or karaoke party! Spend a night doing a romantic dance to all your favorite tunes that remind you of your special someone. Additionally, turn it into a singalong if you’re down with karaoke vibes.

You could serenade your S.O the way they’ve been dreaming of!

Game night. Whether it be board games or video games, you’re sure to find something you and your significant other will enjoy playing together. Don’t be afraid to get a little competitive, but keep it within reason, folks.

Wondering what to get your significant other for Valentine’s Day? Listed below are a few easy present ideas that are sure to impress.

Anything but flowers. Flowers are pretty, sure.

But they’re just going to die after a few days. Rather than putting $20 into something that is literally going to be thrown away, please spend the money on anything that is going to last. For example, jewelry, clothes, shoes, or maybe a picture frame with a cute, romantic picture.

Day trip. Sometimes a physical item loses meaning because everyone tends to get each other the same things, so why not get your partner a vacation? Even if it’s just for a day, you’ll be able to spend quality time with each other. There are also a lot of different activities that you can do depending on where you go. You could go to a zoo, a park, or even go on a camping trip!

A homemade meal. For all of you bakers and cooks out there, this will be the perfect opportunity to show off your skills to the one you love! Wake your significant other up with a beautiful heartshaped omelet, treat them to a wonderful sandwich (made with love) for lunch, or cook the best steak in the world for dinner. If you’re feeling real sweet, maybe bake a cake for dessert.

A handwritten note. Speak your mind (and heart) by writing your Valentine a very personal, touching note. There’s a saying that goes “The best things in life are free.” Words and feelings are as close to free as you can ever get.

Polaroids of the best couples pictures. Get a few of your most aesthetic pics together turned to Polaroids. These are great for decor pieces, scrapbooking, or a special box of all your nicest photos.

Having a heart-to-heart moment. As a hopeless romantic, just being able to express the love, and admiration I have for my significant partner is more valuable than a tangible gift. A.K.A. a spoken serenaid.

Make a personalized playlist. Who doesn’t love music? Make a playlist the both of you can add some personal touch to. Bonus points if you make it a CD playlist or Cassette mixtape.

With Valentine’s day coming up you might have two reactions towards it. For one you might be thinking, what a wonderfully romantic day in which I get to spend time with the love of my life! Or you might be thinking, what a terrible day in which I’m reminded of the constant cruelty of this world and how that jerkface broke up with me in the taco bell drive through!

Whether you fall into either of these categories or maybe some place in the middle let me assure you that there are many awesome things about Valentine’s day.

Valentines is a romantic day in which many couples spend time trying to make each other’s day special. However the wonderful things about Valentine’s day are not limited to those who have a special someone in their life. In this article I will discuss three of the best things about Valentines (No matter who you are) Allow me to introduce the first great part about Valentines, the chocolate! With so many choices you are sure to fill your appetite for sweets and better yet, the day after they all go one sale! That’s right, I’m talking 25, 50, even 75% sales on all those goodies. Tell me, does it get better than that?

Another fantastic part about Valentines is the opportunity to let friends and family know how much you love and care about them. And 99.99% of the time they will receive it well because it’s Valentine’s day and who isn’t in a more loving mood on Valentines? Unless your heart was broken by a jerk-face, who is self centered and crushed your soul into a million pieces!! But if that’s not you then of course you want to hear how much your friends care for you.

Lastly, who can forget those little heart shaped mint like candy’s with inspiring or loving messages on them. I don’t know about you but nothing motivates me more after I’ve had a stressful day than a little chalked flavored fruit candy telling me “I love you” or “You are special” am I right?

In all seriousness though, affirming words can go a long way and on Valentines we see many inspiring quotes or loving messages, whether it be on our news feeds in a text or on little candy’s. Everyone needs to feel loved and it’s these little things that can pick us up on a rough day. Valentine’s day is special because it helps remind us that there is still love in this cruel world. And as long as we have love then that makes life a little bit more wonderful.

What Not To Love About Valentines Day Kerri Hoover News Editor & Design and Ads Manager kah4338@lockhaven.edu Valentine’s Day is right around the corner, and honestly what’s not to love about America’s sweetheart holiday?

Let’s try “what is there to love about it?” It’s an overly commercialized, romanticized, and meaningless holiday that puts excessive pressure on couples to conform to society’s definition of love.

Excessive pressure: This overly romanticized holiday places way too much pressure on couples. Society stereotypes Valentine’s Day as the “most romantic day of the year;” therefore, most people are expected to do something objectively glamourous for their significant others. Find the perfect gift. Plan a romantic dinner date. Write out 100 reasons why you’re in love. Sounds stressful right?

Not to mention, everyone and their brother will be attempting to do the exact same things on the exact same day. Itemless shelves and booked restaurant reservations will only cause more stress. And, what happens if those plans don’t meet the expectations of society (to be discussed later)? Massive disappointment and anger, which will only create more stress. Just alleviate the pressure of a nationwide romance holiday by choosing your own special day with your significant other. Speaking of pressure, what the heck are us girls supposed to get our guy lovers for Valentine’s Day? A nice diamond necklace? A beautiful bouquet of flowers? A stuffed teddy bear? Yeah, I don’t think so.

Creates fake expectations of love: Valentine’s Day is just another example of how the media and large greeting card companies manipulate society, projecting an idealistic image of how love should be. Roses and chocolate do not define perfect love nor should they. Instead, love should be subjective, and its definition will vary from couple to couple.

For instance, my parents never (and I mean never) do anything for each other on Valentine’s Day - to them, it’s just another day on the calendar.

However, it doesn’t mean they don’t love each other. My mom would much rather receive love and affection through compliments and completed household chores (that she doesn’t have to ask my dad to do) than through meaningless gestures and soon-to-be dead flowers. You and your significant other’s love language should be unique to the two of you - not defined by what society claims is normal.

Loss of Meaning/Generic celebration: Let’s face it.

Valentine’s Day has lost its meaning over the years due the overcommercialization of the holiday. According to WalletHub, sales projections for the year are estimated at $23.9 billion, breaking it down to roughly $175 per person. They say you can’t buy someone’s love, yet why is Valentine’s Day the third most expensive holiday in the United States if that statement is true? The real winners on Feb. 14 are the greeting card companies and retail stores, not your special boo who you gave her 100th necklace to - just saying.

Circling back to my first argument, Valentine’s Day creates pressure for couples who are expected to showcase their love for one another on this generic day. The holiday becomes a lot less meaningful when people feel forced to celebrate it in order to “keep up with the Jones’” of American mainstream culture. Skip the fake gestures and figure out something meaningful to you and your lover. Oh, not to mention Valentine’s Day is the second most popular date for couples’ engagements. How sweet…and generic to become a fiancé on the same day as everyone else. C’mon! There’s 365 days in a year, and you can’t put any other day to get proposed to?

At the meet on Saturday, Owens broke her own school record in the 60m dash and obliterated the field. Her 7.67-second mark is not only a PSAC No. 2, but she also successfully hit an NCAA-Provisional mark. She won the race by nearly four tenths of a second.

Owen’s returned in the 200m dash to break a 15-year-old school record in 25.13s. That previous school record was set by Ashley Hartman in 2006.

After conversion, her 24.75s mark ranks second in the PSAC and also marks yet another NCAA-Provisional mark. She is ranked 17th in Division II in the event. She also broke the facility record and won the race by over a second.

In the end, Owens contributed to 30 team points and helped Lock Haven finish second out of fourteen teams.

Owens was also tabbed the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Track Athlete of the Week for her incredible performance this weekend at the Utica Pioneer Invitational.

The sophomore Mastillo, opened the 2022 season on an offensive tear. Over a three-game span vs. nationally-ranked (No. 13) Mount Olive, he hit .357 with four home runs and eight RBIs. Over the three games that saw Lock Haven go 1-2, he was 5-for-14 with four of the five hits going for homers. He scored five runs, recorded a .400 on-base percentage and a 1.214 slugging percentage. The Bald Eagles closed the three-game weekend series with an 8-4 victory Sunday. In the win, Mastillo went 2-for-5 with two hits, two runs scored, two RBIs. One of those hits Sunday was his fourth home run on the young season.

Mastillo also earned National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Regional Athlete of the Week honors after his flying start to the season over the weekend.

Clash of The Beasts,Bengals and Rams face off in Super Bowl 56 Joel Robinson Staff writer jmr4508@lockhaven.edu That time of year has arrived again! Super Bowl Sunday, which will take place Feb 13th, will showcase the top National Football League’s (NFL) teams from the AFC and NFC. This matchup includes the AFC’s Cincinnati Bengals (13-7) Who defeated former Super Bowl contender, the Kansas City Chiefs (14-6) in the championship game to advance. And The Los Angeles Rams (15-5) Who beat their division rival San Francisco 49ers (12-8) In a game which came literally down to the last few minutes to claim their spot in Super Bowl 56 The Bengals coached by Zac Taylor will be trying for their first Super Bowl win in franchise history. The Bengals have been to the Super Bowl twice before but have lost both times. Both Super Bowl losses came to The 49ers during the 80’s. 49ers quarterback Joe Montana led the 49ers to a 26-21 win in superbowl 14 and a 20-16 win in superbowl 23.

The Rams head coach Sean McVay is no stranger to the big game. In 2018 he helped lead his team to a (133) regular season and a Super Bowl. The Rams would fall short however, losing to the New England Patriots 13-3. The Rams will be looking for their first Super Bowl win since 2000 when they beat the Tennessee Titans 23-16 Previewing the game ahead I will give a breakdown of playoff performance by both teams and then give my prediction of the score for Super Bowl 56 First the quarterbacks. For the Bengals, second year Joe Burrow who threw for over 800 yards and had 4 touchdown passes in their three playoff games against the Raiders, Titans and Chiefs.

Rams QB Matthew Stafford, who has been in the NFL for 13 seasons, threw for over 300 yards in his playoff games against Tampa Bay and San Francisco (Throwing for 202 yards against Arizona) and threw two touchdowns in all three playoff games .

When it comes to running the ball both teams are neck and neck stat wise. The Rams have 283 total

rushing yards while the Bengals have 264.

Both teams have strong receiving cores with some notable names being Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins for the Bengals and Cooper Kupp and Odell Beckham Jr. for the Rams.

Both teams have defenses that have played great through the postseason. The Bengals have 8 sacks and 6 interceptions along with 2 forced fumbles. The Rams recorded 5 sacks, 4 interceptions and one forced fumble.

For my prediction on the game, my thoughts are this: whichever team starts with the ball will march down the field and score. It will then go into a battle of QuarterBacks with multiple 20+ yard pickups due to the passing game. Ultimately I predict that the Bengals will pull an upset over the Rams 28-23 being the final score.

Brighter days coming to LHU Football Tristan Klinefelter Staff Writer tmk432@lockhaven.edu Dan Mulrooney was chosen to be the head coach of the LHU football program Jan. 31. Mulrooney came to LHU after coaching at Anna Maria College for the past five seasons. With Murlooney’s guidance, the Amcats got a 7-3 record and a spot in the 2021 NCAA Division III playoffs.

“I took over one of the worst division III schools in the country, at least record wise Anna Maria College and the recipe for success is something I had that was recent. My energy and passion was something Lock Haven was looking for.” said Mulrooney. It was a no-brainer for Mulrooney and his family to come to Lock Haven and provide the program with energy.

In the past 10 years, the Bald Eagles have a record of 19-91. The last conference championship the Bald Eagles won was in 1979. After the 2021 campaign, the team finished with just 1-10 on the year, dropping 10 games in a row. At the end of the season, LHU began looking for a new coach. Facing uncertainty, many Bald Eagles entered the transfer portal to find a new home.

With the change of coaching, Mulrooney said, “Change is hard but ultimately they [the players] deserve a quality experience. Player success is needed and five things for the recipe for success is culture, staffing, recruiting, community engagement and player success.”

Mulrooney wants to come out and be the most hard working coach in the league because many kids follow hard workers and need someone to follow. “I’m gonna be the example for them as a teacher, coach, and mentor,” Mulrooney said.

After the National Letter of Intent day, LHU failed to sign any athletes. Mulrooney said, “I’m gonna sell it like crazy, I’m excited there is so much to sell with the

reputation and tradition at the university. Just looking at the football program there is so much to sell and there is no reason you can’t win football games at Lock Haven.

There are brighter days coming to Lock Haven.”
