LHU Earth Day celebration

knc9459@lockhaven.edu This experience is so life changing and really emotional for anyone. It really shows that Lock Haven has some form of community that handles these types of issues and can talk about it together in order to heal. Healing is an important process for sexual assault victims and “Take Back the Night” brings that kind of closure to help students, faculty, and others realize something bigger than sexual assault being wrong. This event brings attention to speaking up and realizing who’s fault it really is in the situation: the abuser, never the victim. It’s about realizing that we’re all human beings who go through the same things eventually in life and we should be there for each other. We should be there for each other for unselfish reasons and to be kind. Life is hard enough and we shouldn’t make it harder for each other.

LHU hosts drag show Nicole Chappelle Guest Writer
nsc8949@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven hosted the LHU Drag Show in the Pub Multipurpose room April 12. This event was sponsored by Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) which is a student organization at Lock Haven University dedicated to providing a safe space among LGBTQIA+ individuals while also advocating for change in the community. The show raised a total of $1,112 dollars that was donated to the Arts of PA. This nonprofit offers transgender individuals around the state the funding for affirming or life changing procedures. Students of the university sat at decorated tables around the room as the Queens performed. Raffles tickets were also sold during the show for a chance to win a basket of prizes. Luna Rubbish hosted and performed at this event, and when interviewed said “I’ve never performed at Lock Haven before, but it was definitely more fun and livelier than any other college I’ve performed at.” Nine other queens performed during this event and each had their own style of dance, makeup, and costumes. During an interview with Lock Haven University student Reileigh Wilson, senior marketing major, she stated: “I love going to drag shows because I find them so entertaining. The energy of the whole show is upbeat and almost empowering. They also raised money for a good cause instead of keeping profit for themselves.” The university gives students a chance to dive into the cultural aspect of the LGBTQIA+ community while helping a cause at the same time. Junior communication major Erin Bolan said, “I thought the event was a really good way to not only raise money for those

who need life changing surgeries to be who they feel they are, but also to teach acceptance for those in the LGBTQIA+ community”. The show lasted for two hours and was filled with upbeat music and laughter from the crowd. Food and drinks were available during the entertainment. The interaction between the crowd and the queens seemed to be ecstatic as they picked out people from the crowd to answer questions and even go up on stage with them. After the show they all went up on stage to introduce themselves and give everyone a chance to follow them on their social media pages. University students had time to take pictures with the queens as well as talk to them before they had to leave.

cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Chancellor Daniel Greenstein invites all LHU students to his open forum he will host on May 2 at 12:30 in Sloan Auditorium. Greenstein visited LHU back during the fall semester during which he learned about LHU along with the other 13 institutions apart of Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE). During his visit this May, Greenstein will give the institutions an update regarding the redesigned efforts PASSHE is making to better the 14 institutions. Students are encouraged to attend this forum to ask questions as well as share their opinions. To learn more about PASSHE’s plan, visit Greenstein’s blog at chancellorgreenstein.blogspot.com. Those who are unable to attend the forum in person, there will be a webcast link sent out to students at a later date.

Beyonce’s “Homecoming” performance is spectacular! Kiara Tinnin Lifestyles Editor kct4127@lockhaven.edu If Beyonce’s new film Homecoming didn’t blow your mind something might be off with you. The Grammy winning singer gave fans a behind the scenes looking into her Coachella performance that sent the world into a friendsies. Which DJ khaled proudly profested to the world “After Beyonce was through with this performance Coachella would have to rename Coachella the Beychella,” and he wasn’t wrong. Beyonce’s states in the film that she wanted to bring more than just her voice to this performance because she would be the first African American singer to headline Coachella since the concert began in 1999. Since then the Valley Music and Arts Festival has had artist like Childish Gambino, Kanye West, and Idris Elba to new performer Ariana Grande grace the stage. In the film Knowles states that in her hometown of Houston she would attend the homingcoming events of other HBCUs and how the experience left her lost for words. Knowles continued that if she
had went to college it would have been an HBCU but her schooling was traveling around the world and life was her teacher. When she put this performance together she made sure to include everything you would see at a HBCU homecoming like the steppers, an orchestra of African American musicians, vocalist, dancers and more. The delicate way she gave viewers intimate look into the eight month long rehearsal that humbled and challenged the singer to find a balance between being a artist, wife and mother of three. Explaining what it was like to try to get back in shape, after giving birth to twins Knowles put herself on a strict diet of no meat, carbs, sugars, dairy, and alcohol from her diet and admitted she was “hungry.” Knowles also included dancer, vocalist and instrumentalist from different part of the country to immerse viewers into the divers world of HBCU students.

Never forget about the great “Selena” Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu The movie “Selena” is a biopic about the true story of Mexican-American Latina idol Selena Quintanilla-Perez and her rise to fame since she was 10 years old. She was discovered by her father and performed for many years, until her tragic death on March 31, 1995 when she was shot by her manager, Yolanda, at age 23. Even after her death, she still managed to touch hearts across America and this movie is one of the results. With the incredible cast of Jennifer Lopez, Edward James Olmos, and Jackie Guerra and directed by Gregory Nava and came out March 21, 1997. This movie really kept me engaged because it was amazing how incredible of a job that Jennifer Lopez did playing Selena and bringing her to life by lip syncing Selena’s songs to make it sound like it was really Selena singing. She also portrayed Selena’s unforgettable concerts, her family struggles, and her secret marriage to her guitarist, Chris Perez. It was really amazing how Selena went from a low-budget neighborhood to being famous for her singing and
dancing despite her being a MexicanAmerican. It was a classic rags-to-riches story. There were a few scenes of drama but in all, it was a great movie. One thing that I found amazing was that to prepare to play Selena, Jennifer Lopez lived with Selena Quintanilla-Perez’s family. There is even some archive footage of the real Selena Quintanilla-Perez in the movie as well as some shots of her fans mourning her and holding pictures of her. I like how they filmed it in Texas, where Selena was born and raised. The sets were incredible because it made you feel like you were right there with Selena and you were watching her grow up and talk about her dreams. She showed us that even though her and her family came from poverty and most of the Americans back then weren’t so open to Mexicans. I loved the music in the movie because it actually sounded like Selena’s voice. It was upbeat and danceable, really awakening the Latin spirit within the movie’s audiences.

Summer destinations
Tiana Gair Copy Editor kteg5895@lockhaven.edu Being in college with nearly no disposable income can be rough, especially when summer rolls around. There are so many possibilities of things to do and so much time to do them! Having been in this situation before, here is a list of a few summer destinations that can fit in a college student’s budget. Rock Run: This is on every central Pennsylvania teenager/young adult’s must-do list over summer vacation. Rock Run is a river and trail that has swimming hole, which is the main attraction. There are even a few larger rocks that are typically jumped off of to dive into the swimming hole. The water is clear and the scenery is beautiful! The best part: it is FREE! Bald Eagle State Park: This park is located in Howard, PA and has two campgrounds, boating and swimming areas. Pack a cooler and load your friends in the car--Bald Eagle mimics a beach area. Delgrosso’s Amusement Park: Located in Tipton, PA, Delgrosso’s prides itself in having lots of fun for a low price. You can pack up a car full of your friends and first enjoy their amusement park. Then,

right across a skywalk, their water park is waiting to cool you off. In total, an all-day pass is never more than $35, and there are usually sales on passes throughout the summer. Knoebel’s: Located in Elysburg, PA is this wonderful free-admission amusement park. Not only are there rides, but there is also amazing food, a haunted mansion, wooden roller coasters, and more. There’s even a pool area if you want to cool off! While it doesn’t cost anything to get in, you have to buy tickets or passes to ride some of the attractions, which are all under $40. Road Trip to Canada: Who doesn’t love a good road trip? Depending on where you are located over the summer, a road trip should be able to fit into your budget. Plus if you’re over the age of 19, you can take on the bar scene in most provinces. Beaches in Delaware/Maryland/New Jersey: Beaches in these states are the hot-spots for the biggest boardwalks in America. With that being said, there is lots to do! Seniors in high school tend to barrage Ocean City, MD and Wildwood, NJ. My personal favorite is Bethany Beach in Delaware--only a 30 minute drive from the madness of OCMD. Tip: Always remember to Airbnb instead of booking hotels—it is much cheaper for (usually) more space.

Variety Buffet: The best in town

Blog Writer tmk432@lockhaven.edu If you are looking for a cheap and very unique Chinese buffet, head down to Mill Hall’s Variety Buffet. Here you will find a wide variety of Chinese and American food. You can pick and choose but the highlight of the place is all the different items you can select from. First there is a full salad bar that has full range of different toppings and dressings to make the best salad. Then there is a full area of Chinese food. From lo mein to General Tso’s chicken, you can fill your plate. There is also a grill where you can make your plate with raw ingredients and one of the employees will cook and serve it to you with no extra charge. The last area for main food is the American choices. This included the popular options of mashed potatoes, mac and cheese, chicken and even a full steak and potatoes. This is one of the biggest Chinese buffets around that has such a diverse menu. Not only do they have all this, but they have a dessert area as well. This included ice cream as well as many different items that has soy milk ingredients. For all these food options, it is very cheap. If you get a water it is nine dollars. With a soda or sweet tea, it is around 10 dollars. With the addition of a tip you should walk out with no more than a 12 dollar bill. They also do take out there it is around 6-7 dollars for one plastic container. The only problem with
the place is the colors. It is very dark and there is no lighting. The main color being green makes it very dark and boring. But if you don’t care, the Variety Buffet is a very good choice for a cheap and very good meal.

Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu What I think is the best summer activity is going to amusement parks like Kennywood or Idlewild Park, going to the pool with your friends, or going to the fair. I know that I’ve seen my fair share of concerts during the summer. Last summer I got to see Three Doors Down and Tenth Avenue North. I’ve seen Big Time Rush and One Direction with my cousins in Pittsburgh. As far as amusement parks go, I’ve been to Kennywood twice. I’ve been to DelGrosso’s amusement park one too many times. I’ve been to Idlewild Park a couple times. About 10 years ago, me, my sister, my grandmother, my Aunt Missy, my Uncle Craig, my cousins Corbin, Cara, and Shaina, and my cousin Shaina’s boyfriend, Craig all went on vacation to Wildwood, New Jersey. It was my first time going out of state somewhere and I’ve never seen the ocean before. We also went to Cape May to see the lighthouse. It was an awesome vacation. I got to swim in the ocean and see seagulls. I got to see dead jellyfish on the beach. We didn’t see any seashells on the beach. My sister and I got sunburnt because our grandmother forgot to put sunscreen on us and we ended up as red as lobsters. We even got to go to the amusement park that was right down the beach and look around.
My sister and I also go to the fair every year. We go to the parade first and then we watch the fireworks. We also go to the fair when it’s free to get in the gate and me and my grandmother let my sister do what she wants to do. My grandmother always sets aside a day for me and her to go and look around at the fair as well because then we don’t have to worry about dragging her along and getting into something.

Best summer vacation Kiara Carson

If I had to pick my best summer vacation experience ever, it’d have to be my recent trip last year in 2018 to Ocean City, Maryland (OCMD) with my mom, her boyfriend, my two little brothers, my cousin from Ohio, my uncle and aunt and two of their kids. It was not only a vacation, but also a birthday trip for my mother who turned 40 years old. I know Ocean City is one of the most popular and common place to go for vacation in the summer in this part of the country, but I enjoy it way too much. It’s most likely because my half-Latin side has never experienced the islands of which my maternal side comes from (Puerto Rico and Cuba) and what they have to offer, like the beautiful weather and exotic lifestyles. OCMD just brings most of that back to me and is one of my three ‘happy places’ in the world so far. Anyways, we all went to the beach almost every day during the long week we were on vacation. The only exception was the first day when we arrived because it unfortunately decided to downpour rain on our vacay that day, but it was an opportunity for us to relax, settle in, spend some quality family time together, and plan our days for the rest of the week. We wanted to stay as active as we possibly could on vacation because all we ever do is the necessary things in life like school, work, and chores, then become lazy when the day is almost over, but not this time. We had things to do every single day. We went to the boardwalk where I got multiple henna tattoos with my cousin and brother. We went minigolfing trying out the two different courses only across the street from one another and up the street from our apartment we rented right by the bay. There was a dock and the bay, which was covered in all different types of crabs my brothers kept trying to catch every day; we even had to buy two crab cages for them to use and raw chicken for bait. It worked sometimes, but most of the time the crabs would just climb in the cage just to steal the bait and run; they were very clever in avoiding us. We eventually used the bay to kayak in and traveled to the part of the dock to measure the water to figure
out if we could swim in it, but it was way deeper than expected so we decided against the idea. The beach was my favorite place to go overall. I love the feeling of swimming freely on a hot, summer day and getting in touch with one of our beautiful oceans. A lot of people are afraid of the ocean because of the unknown things in it, the animals that might harm us, and how deep it goes, but I find it exhilarating. It gives me the best feeling of freedom, it’s a great form of exercise and it feels awesome laying out under the sun to dry and enjoy the warmth. Warmth is what I crave the most in that environment because it invokes that I’m in a place where I can relax and feel good in nature. I hope to go back as much as I want in the next few years and hopefully it’ll inspire me to travel elsewhere for the warmth and new oceans I crave to acknowledge and discover in my lifetime.

Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu Scott Leitholf of the Lock Haven University baseball team was named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division Pitcher of the Week. It marks the first such award for the Bald Eagles baseball team this season. In Thursday’s 6-0 win over PSAC foe Shippensburg, Leitholf had a monster game for the Bald Eagles. He pitched a complete game shutout and allowed only three hits. Leitholf struck out eight batters and did not allow an extra base hit. Leitholf walked only two batters on the day.
Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu Bekah Slattery has been named this week’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division Pitcher of the Week and Athlete of the Week by the conference office. It is Slattery’s fourth Pitcher of the Week honor this season and her first Athlete of the Week in a rare but certainly earned combination of accolades for the senior pitcher. Slattery had a huge week in the circle and at the plate for Lock Haven as she went 3-1 on the week in four starts while also recording a save in five appearances. Slattery also batted .400 on the week while totaling a double, triple, two runs scored and a team-high five RBI’s. She posted an ERA of 0.68 and struck out 48 batters over 31 innings pitched while also posting a .500 on-base percentage and a .700 slugging percentage. She allowed just 12 hits and walked only five batters. She posted two shutouts in her four starts and allowed no more than three hits in any of her outings. In the 5-1 win over Mansfield, Slattery finished with a double, a run scored and two RBI’s while also pitching a complete-game two-hitter. She struck out 14 in that game. In the 5-0 extra-inning win over IUP, Slattery pitched all nine innings while allowing just two hits in an extra-inning shutout. She struck out 13 batters while also finishing with a single, an RBI and a run scored at the plate. In her other shutout of the week, a 7-0 win over division leader Bloomsburg, Slattery pitched all seven innings while allowing just three hits and striking out nine. At the plate, Slattery went 1-2 with a triple, and two RBI’s.

Behind balanced effort, Anderson & Bald Eagles stand strong Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu LEWISBURG, Pa. – CJ Anderson (Milford, Pa./Delaware Valley) continued to impress in the 400-meter hurdles and John Davern (Manchester, N.J./Manchester) recorded another personal-best in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, as the duo led another all-around balanced effort today for the Lock Haven University men’s outdoor track & field team. As a team, the Bald Eagles finished second in the team standings at the Bucknell Team Challenge in a field made up of mostly NCAA Division I competition. Only host Bucknell topped Lock Haven today. Anderson ran another PR and improved on his NCAA DII standing with a time of 53.03 in the 400mH. The season-best and collegiate-best time was good enough for the win and it marked both a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship qualifying mark and an NCAA DII provisional championship qualifying mark. Anderson also won the 110-meter hurdles with a PSAC time of 14.91. Davern was second and the top DII finisher in the steeplechase
with a time of 9:42.90. The PSAC mark was a personal-best in the event, as he continues to shine this spring. Davern headlined what proved to be a strong event for the Bald Eagles today, as they scored big in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Christopher Valdez (Jim Thorpe, Pa./Jim Thorpe) was seventh (10:25.74) and Zack Skrabski (South Park, Pa./South Park) was eighth (10:30.34). Thrower Marcus Disbrow (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) hit a big personal-best in the discus throw with a third-place showing of 154-05.00. It was a PSAC mark. In the hammer throw, Disbrow was fourth (top DII) with a throw of 171-03. Darrian Berkins (Johnstown, Pa./Greater Johnstown) was second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.27. He was topped by only Bucknell’s Jeffrey Brown. Dalton Lyons (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) was third in the javelin throw with a season-best performance, which led a PSAC mark of 177-09.00. Devon Bushor (Hughesville, Pa./Hughesville) had a big day. He was fourth in the triple jump with a season-best mark of 3810.25, he was sixth in the high jump with a season-best clearance of 5-10.75 and he rounded out the day with an eighth-place finish in the long jump with another season-best mark of 19-11.75. Adam Gehret (Perkiomenville, Pa./Boyertown) was fifth in the long jump with a mark of 20-09.75. He was eight in the 200 with a time of 22.96. Ryan Cruz (Bushkill, Pa./East Stroudsburg North) had a big outing in the 400-meter dash and he finished sixth with a PSAC and season-best time of 49.97, as he rounds into form. At 3,000 meters, Anson Weidner (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown) was fifth and the top DII finisher with a run of 9:15.65. The Bald Eagles were second in the 4x100-meter relay (41.99) and third in the 4x4. UP NEXT: Several Bald Eagles will compete at the prestigious Penn Relays this week, scheduled for Thursday through Friday (April 25-27). A number of LHU student-athletes will be in action Sunday, April 28 at Cornell’s Big Red Invitational. Baseball drops doubleheader to Seton Hill Adam Kaylor
Graduate Assistant ank4635@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (18-18-1) dropped a doubleheader to Seton Hill (22-18) in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Watkins Field. Game 1: L, 6-2 Seton Hill took the first game scoring two runs in both the fourth and sixth innings to erase Lock Haven’s 2-1 lead and win the game. John Banes (Springfield, Pa./Cumberland CC), Liam McArthur (Basking Ridge, N.J./Seton Hall) and Colby Hiddemen (Honey Brook, Pa./Twin Valley) each provided one of the Bald Eagles three hits. Hiddeman and Max Joseph (Marlton, N.J./Harford CC) each drove in one run for The Haven. Game 2: L, 8-6 The teams were knotted at 3-3 going into the fifth inning when Isaac Porter (Beech Creek, Pa./St. Bonaventure) stepped to the plate and put a towering shot over the right field fence to edge the Bald Eagles in front. In the seventh inning, with Lock Haven leading 6-4 Seton Hill’s Parker Denny launched a game winning grand slam over the left field fence. Porter finished the game 3-4 with two RBI’s including his homerun in the fifth inning. McArthur had another strong game finishing with two hits, an RBI and a walk. Reagan Lawlor (McMurray, Pa./Peters Township) and Cameron Kutchey (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg) all contributed an RBI and a hit as part of The Haven’s eight hit day. UP NEXT: Lock Haven will travel to Bloomsburg on Friday, April 26 at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. for the first two games of a 4-game weekend series. On Saturday, the teams return to Lock Haven for the final two games at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday’s games are also part of Coaches vs Cancer. The event is set to raise money for the Janet Weis Children’s Hospital, based in Danville, Pa. Funds raised will be split between pediatric cancer research for the deadliest form of pediatric cancer - pediatric brain tumors, and child life programs.
