3rd Annual Mental Health Awareness walk Cassandra Keller Co-Managing Editor

cmk2356@lockhaven.edu The annual Mental Health Awareness walk, hosted by the LHU Psychology Club, will be held on Thursday, April 25 at 5:30 p.m.

During the walk, students will walk along the levee, exploring posters about mental health. After the walk, students will get to enjoy free food and games as well as professor pie-ing.

Dr. Erin Kennedy, Dr. Andrew Talbot, Dr. Mark Cloud, Dr. Chris Offutt, Dr. Susan Boland, Dr. Jennifer Taylor and Dr. Cheryl Newburg will be at the professor pie-ing. The winner of the Penny Wars game will pie the loser after the walk.

Pre-registration is $3 or $5 with a sticker or bracelet. Students can pre-register from April 19 through April 24 at 12:30 a.m.- 2:00 p.m. on the 3rd floor of Robinson. Registration the day of is $5. All proceeds benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP).

In previous years, approximately 60 students have attended the walk, raising $550 for AFSP last year alone.

Josilyn Martin, a senior psychology major, said: “I believe it is important for students to be a part of this event because I’m sure everyone knows someone who has or is currently struggling with mental health issues. Attending the Mental Health Awareness Walk is a great way for

people to show their support.”

According to AFSP, 47,173 americans committed suicide in 2017 with an estimated 1,400,000 suicide attempts. The LHU Psychology club wants to lower that number by bringing mental awareness to LHU. Jordyn Glick, a senior psychology major and president of the Psychology club, said: “I really think that the push for mental health is something underrepresented and misunderstood and I think our walk with our speaker and signs will clarify some of these misconceptions. We donate to suicide prevention to help reach an audience that feels like they have no one, and we hope our donation let’s those in that place know that they are not alone and have support. We want to spread a message of understanding and compassion, I want our university to represent this.”

Main campus nursing program to begin Fall 2019 Roxanne Aretta News Editor

rab484@lockhaven.edu Tuesday at the President’s Town Hall meeting, President Pignatello discussed a few future plans, including the Lock Haven campus nursing school, suggestions for minority inclusion, and a celebration for December graduates.

One of the biggest announcements of the night was that nursing will start at our campus this fall semester. The school will work with UPMC Lock Haven Professor Matt Girton asked, “What is the size of the cohort?” Pignatello says it’ll be around 12 to 15 as of right now. He also said an M.B.A. program at LHU could happen in the near future.

Cimone Weeks, a senior psychology major, asked, “Is there a possibility that we can create a commission for minority students?” The president responded that the school’s going to look at successful minority inclusion programs from other schools. “There are lots of potential ideas,” he said. “This is not something that we have to re-invent the wheel.”

December graduation is no longer implemented because of financial reasons. However, the president wants to commemorate

future graduates in different ways. He says plans are under review currently.

Girton will step down as the President of LHU’s APSCUF chapter at the end of the semester. Professor Peter Campbell will take his place. The president and other staff are also evaluating the dean of the Stephen Poorman College of Business applications.

“To have student success we must have employee success,” said Pignatello. An employee recognition ceremony will take place April 30 at 12:30 p.m. “We are looking forward to recognizing many more worthwhile employees and thanking them for their service.”

Pignatello believes the town halls are getting more successful because the attendance has increaased and more people are asking questions. “It’s a hallmark of a healthy institution that we can do this,” he said.

The meeting took place in Sloan performing arts center from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. About 60 people attended.

State Representative Brian Sims speaks about coming out Jaime Julio Rodriguez-Vega Guest Writer jjr9304@lockhaven.edu

The President’s Commission on LGBTQ Affairs welcomes State Representative Brian Sims arrive to LHU’s Price Auditorium on Tuesday, April 9. Sims spoke out about his personal comingout story and the importance of allies.

Sims is a representative for the 182nd district in the city of Philadelphia. He is also a distinguished policy attorney and a civil rights advocate, as well as chairmen for Gay Lesbian Lawyers of Pennsylvania. Sims went to Bloomsburg University and played football. In 2000, he came out to his teammates after he lead them to play-offs for the Division II National Championship and remains the only former NCAA football captain to have ever come out. He is now known as one of the most notable collegiate athletes to ever come out in an sport.

Sims coming out to his teammate happened about a month after the loss in the National Championship. Sims, said “I tell people I don’t think the experience would of been better if we won. The getting there (National Championship) is what made us inseparable for the rest of our lives, losing that game is something we all had to deal with.” A month later at a Shippensburg Jello wrestling event, Sims said “I was walking back to my car, I think to get more beer, around 7 o’clock with our quarterback as we are cutting through some woods to get to the parking lot.

And I don’t know why he chose that time to ask me but he turns around and said ‘Yo Sims are you gay?’ He just dropped it on me.

I thought they would already figured it out but they didn’t, so when they asked me. I thought I was going to have a profound answer but instead I said ‘Yeah man, thanks for asking!’”

Sims coming out to his teammates was not an easy thing to do, but they were close and supportive of him. Sims said: “After I came out during the ride home, they pelted me with questions about my experience as a gay guy at Bloomsburg University, but the truth was that I didn’t have answers for any of them. There was not a Gay Straight Alliance or a LGBTQ.” Being an ally means so much to the people coming out about their sexuality because they know that they have a valuable support system behind them. The best way you can be an ally is to be aware of your privelege.

Tess English Online Editor tae7002@lockhaven.edu The Commuters and Transfers Come to Haven club (CATCH) will be hosting a game night welcome to all in the PUB game room April 26 from 6 p.m. - 10 p.m.

The host club will be offering a variety of game choices on many different consuls such as the Nintendo Switch, PS4 and others are to be determined.

Vice President Derek DeSeau, freshman business administration said: “Come on down to the PUB and join us for a gaming tournament. Not feeling competitive? Well no worries join us for a casual session of Mario Kart.

Want to be competitive? Join us for [Super] Smash Bros., Halo, and Mortal Kombat.”

CATCH will also be offering other activities for people less interested in gaming activity.

“Even if you don’t play videos games, come hang out. We have food and you can try to win the raffle,” said Samantha Bailey, a freshman elementary education major.

The president of CATCH, Sarah Bernhardt, a junior in early childhood development major, when asked about the purpose of the event said, “We [CATCH] just want them [commuters] to be able to come out and informal meet other commuters that they wouldn’t normally meet.”

Coachella features musical film “Guava Island” Tiana Gair Copy Editor teg5895@lockhaven.edu This past weekend, Childish Gambino headlined the massive music festival Coachella in Indio, California. What he had in store to release during, however, many fans did not expect: a 55-minute musical film named “Guava Island”.

Childish Gambino, also known as Donald Glover, is not new to the world of cinema, though some fans of the actor/rapper only know of his work in the music industry.

“Guava Island” is directed by Hiro Murai, a frequent collaborator with Glover. It stars Glover as local celebrity, Deni Maroon, and pop/R&B star Rihanna as his girlfriend, Kofi Novia.

It’s a perfect mix of playful and serious, as the mesmerizing acting of Glover interacts with the underlying themes of capitalism to create this short film. It even began with a colorful animated beginning narrated

by Rihanna, explaining the origins of both the island and their respective characters.

Kofi is a seamstress while Deni works as an employee for Red Cargo, one of the main businesses on the

island. However, it is Deni’s music that seems to unite the citizens of Guava Island. This is evident as different groups of people are all seen tuning in to Deni’s angelic voice on their radios.

A few of Childish Gambino’s smash hits were included in the short film, like “This Is America,” “Summertime Magic” and “Feels Like Summer.” All were released this past summer and were very successful. “This Is America” won Grammy’s for Song of the Year, Record of the Year, Best Music Video, and Best Rap/Sung Performance.

In addition to his musical successes, Glover is a star and creator of the series Atlanta, has appeared on the sitcom Community, along with a variety of other films like The Lazarus Effect, The Martian, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and will be the voice of adult Simba in the remake of The Lion King, set to hit theaters later this year.

Kiara Tinnin Lifestyles Editor kct4127@lockhaven.edu Dear 16 year-old self, How do I even begin to talk to you? First, do you ever think that you are so brave and strong for sticking it out this long? It amazes me everyday that you choose to keep going. Don’t let what the people closest to you say get in your head. Blood may be thicker than water, but your will to fight is stronger.

You fought off hate, discrimination, stereotypes, statist, and even a misogynist in sheep clothing. Keep reading, for the love of God keep reading. You were right to think that books are better than some people actually are in real life. You’re going to let go of five people, don’t hold on to them. Just know that they don’t help you with your goals. Don’t hold on to the past, the things you create will make you forget about any past pain.

Now for the good. I hope you’re sitting because you might you might pass out from the excitement. You find some really good people that make you restore your faith in humans again--especially at CCP. That is where you new chapter begins, and you make some long lasting friendship that will get you through the many

phases of being 19. You and Dad reconnect and this is still a work in progress but don’t give up. You don’t know how much he needs you in his life. You are the calm in the middle of the storm he’s going to go through.

Oh, I almost forgot, we graduate from college and do some mind blowing work here. For example, we become an editor for the Eagle Eye and produce videos for TV. Doing this made you see what you really want to do in life. Trust your third eye, it doesn’t ever steer you wrong. Sometimes it’s the only way you see through the madness and depression.

If by any chance you get a message from someone on Twitter saying they wanted to talk for whatever reason you couldn’t before, don’t open that message. You don’t want to deal with that, no matter how persistent they are because it makes unhappy and will not like what happens if you do. Remember what Gram said: boys and books don’t mix, and boy was she right because there’s a lot of dummies and you do a great job of curving these fools. Get to know Kenny and Amy from CEI. They help you make college better. You get your own place, that way you can cook to your heart’s content, and you make a really good chicken and shrimp alfredo. l want you to know that things work out well. Remember to always trust the process.

P.S. I know right now things are hard, but you have so much to smile about, remember that.

How to dress for success

Tess English Online Editor tae7002@lockhaven.edu College students are often preparing for many big events and meetings, but sometimes don’t understand the proper dress etiquette. Here a few helpful tips to ensure a better appearance during an interviewer or when addressing crowd.

First things first, be hygienic: brush your hair, iron your clothes, tuck in your shirt, wear clean clothes, and brush your teeth. Right off the bat, personal hygiene can make or break someone’s opinion of you. Think about your personal perception--are you more likely to want to hire someone with a mustard stain on their shirt and unbrushed hair or the well-groomed person with his or her shirt tucked in?

Second, keep fashion choices simple. Try wearing solid colors to avoid distracting patterns. If you have an unusual piercing, consider taking it out. Also consider covering up an distracting tattoos. Another tip: avoid uncommon

hairstyles and facial hair.

Third, consider your footwear. By any means necessary, try to avoid wearing the wrong shoes to formal settings like sneakers, flip-flops, and crocs. Also keep in mind comfort. If you cannot walk in heels or wedges, avoid wearing those, too. Instead wear something like flats or depending formality sandals.

Fourth, avoid cosmetic disasters. When it comes to professional make-up less is more. Try to keep to basic or neutral colors to avoid distraction. Also, be weary of applying lots of makeup.

Having overdrawn or uneven eyebrows may make you lose you an audience.

Fifth and finally, no excessive accessories.

Things like a cowboy hat, extravagant bag, or lavish jewelry will take the focus off you and onto the item itself. You don’t want to over do it by adding flashing items to your outfit.

Online classes: good or bad?

News Editor rab484@lockhaven.edu I’m a senior and this is the first semester I’ve taken online courses. I wished I would’ve sooner for several reasons.

I’m not the most organized, so having all my assignments posted online with a reminder when they’re due is amazing. They took me a couple weeks to get used to, but since then I’ve loved them.

I set aside my Saturday afternoons for homework. It’s become a routine that every Saturday I complete the assignments for my online classes, and I haven’t missed an assignment. Plus, I know I can’t hangout with friends until my homework is done because it’s due at midnight, not in the morning.

My allergies are terrible here in Lock Haven. The runny noses and sore throats I can handle, but there are some days my head aches to the point where I can’t pay attention in class.

Being able to choose when I read my textbook and class materials is marvelous. I love not having to get up early and waste time getting ready for and traveling to class. I can do everything in my apartment.

The reason I was weary of taking online classes before this semester was because I am so disorganized and I was afraid of doing poorly. Yet, these classes ended up being perfect for someone like me.

When do you become an adult?

Copy Editor teg5895@lockhaven.edu To first answer this question, one must ask themselves what they personally expect from an adult. Who do you look at and consider to be mature enough, wise enough, and independent enough to be worthy of the title?

In my opinion, it has little to do with age and everything to do with the actual person at question. Sure, legally at 18 one can start making their own decisions about voting, buying and smoking cigarettes, joining the army, and piling up credit card debt. However, I believe that some of those decisions, if not all, help mold a person in various ways on their path to adulthood.

I know that I am impressed with someone who has massive responsibilities. Additionally, people who become self-sufficient financially after college are most likely on their way to becoming a full-on grown-up as well. Seeing that someone has life goals, ambitions, and a plan to accomplish these things also commands respect from me, personally.

Another aspect of “adulting’” to me is making your own choices, even on a small scale. Some people do this from a very young age if their parents and/or guardians encourage independence and creativity.

Others include their parents in every decision—even people who are about to graduate college.

Being an adult has many components that even I haven’t mentioned, and probably more than I know. As I said before, the definition of ‘adult’ is subjective and typically unique to a degree.

8 jobs that fit a nomad lifestyle Alexis Gallagher

We all have that friend (or guilty Instagram follow) who seems to be constantly traveling or longing to. Chances are they’ve joined the growing army of digital nomads, or people who work remotely from coffee shops and workspaces around the globe in order to fund a nomadic, travel-heavy lifestyle.

Nearly five million Americans describe themselves as digital nomads, meaning they both work and travel remotely.

One in six say they earn $75,000 or more a year but a majority earn less than $10,000 annually—and to most digital nomads, this doesn’t matter much. When you’re traveling in countries with low costs of living, you can make less money, work fewer hours, and still enjoy a higher quality of life. Places like Bali, Vietnam, and Columbia offer the right mixture of affordability, modern conveniences, and reliable Wi-Fi. To get started here is a list of a few common digital nomad jobs: Web or app development: when you build websites, computer programs, and apps, everything you need is either in the cloud or on your computer. In this behind-the-scenes job, you’ll likely have very little client interaction, which means no one will know (or care) if you’re working from Vietnam.

If you have no experience working with code and no relevant degree, you can find online schools that will give you the skills to apply as an entry-level or junior web developer. The jobs are plentiful and the pay is good, making it a top career choice for digital nomads.

E-commerce entrepreneur: all you need is a laptop to market and manage your online store, while a supplier handles the stock and mails the goods to clients. Known as “drop shipping,” this method gives entrepreneurs the freedom to be anywhere.

Digital marketer: the goal of a digital marketer is to generate traffic for clients. Many specialize in SEO, paid traffic, or affiliate marketing and are pros at decoding Google’s search algorithms and analyzing Facebook ad data. The better you do, the more your clients will want to maintain a working relationship with you, which could potentially lead to a steady gig.

Copy editor: with the increased demand for content across the web, there’s also a need for people with an eye for detail who can polish and refine a writer’s work. Freelance copy editors are often the final set of eyes on blog posts, web content, and books before they get published. Many copy-editing jobs you’ll find don’t require you to keep set hours, so you’ll have lots of flexibility to work when you can find the time between sightseeing excursions.

Graphic designer: everything in graphic design is done behind a screen—think logos, brochures, and business cards— but to get into the biz you need natural creativity, a solid portfolio, and a good handle of Adobe Creative Suite.

Online English teacher: forget about being stuck in one place for a year teaching English. If you’re a native English speaker, teaching online via Skype and other programs is a good way to travel while still making a buck. Most jobs require teachers to have a college degree, but you can get certified over a weekend or via an online course for as little as $269.

Photographer: in photography, it’s all about getting organizations and publications to buy your work. Expect to send lots of query emails at first, but once you have clients who know and like your style you can pitch ideas directly and shoot assignments on commission. Uploading images to stock sites like iStock and Stocksy can provide passive income while you focus on nailing down clients.

Translator and transcriber: if you’re fluent in a second language, finding work as a translator or transcriber is a great way to make money while traveling. A typical client includes e-commerce sites that want to target global markets or companies that want to convert audio or video to text. Pay is usually per minute or per word, and you can work as a freelancer for a company.

Athletes of the week Max Joseph

Baseball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu Max Joseph of the Lock Haven baseball team had a big week to help lead LHU to a four-game sweep of Mansfield. For the week, Joseph hit .500 with two doubles, four runs scored and five RBI’s.

He posted an on-base percentage of .583 and also posted a slugging percentage of .700.

His weekend was highlighted by a huge game in the final game of the series in which he finished 3-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBI’s in the 4-1 win.

Laurel Moyer

Track & Field Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu Distance star Laurel Moyer had quite the weekend at the Colonial Relays. On Friday, she finished 15th out of 85 in a deep 1,500-meter field. Her time of 4:40.56 was clearly a PSAC mark and ranks as the fourth-fastest time in school history.

On Saturday, she came back and capped a brilliant weekend with a pair of record relay runs. She anchored the DMR to a school record of 12:39.56 with a sizzling mile leg. Less than one hour later she was back and ran a 4:44 leg on the way to the Bald Eagle’s school record in the 4x1500-meter relay (19:59.73).

Lock Haven takes game one, drops game two in doubleheader vs. Manfield Ryan Bogaczyk

Graduate Assistant rjb7979@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University softball team (21-15, 7-5 PSACC) was able to take game one of a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division doubleheader with Mansfield University (12-12, 6-6 PSACC), 5-1 before falling in game two to the Mounties, 9-1 in six innings. The split pushes LHU to 21-15 on the season and 7-5 in PSAC Central play.

Game One: W, 5-1 The Bald Eagles knocked off Mansfield, 5-1 in game one.

LHU got the scoring started in the third inning when Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) ripped an RBI single down the left field line to give LHU the 1-0 lead.

In the fourth, Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) helped her own cause when she sent a two-run double off the center field wall that plated two more runs and gave Lock Haven the 3-0 lead.

In the fifth, LHU extended the lead to 5-0 when Chloe Kennedy (Elkton, Md./Caraval Academy) drilled a two-run homer to left field.

Mansfield added a run late, but it wasn’t enough as LHU defeated the Mounties, 5-1.

The offense was led by Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./ Jersey Shore) and Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air). Caputo finished 2-4 with a run scored while Criss went 2-3 with a run scored.

Kennedy and Slattery each finished with two RBI’s while Carpenter finished with one of her own.

Slattery was great in the circle, throwing a complete-game two-hitter. She struck out 14 and allowed just one earned run.

Game Two: L, 9-1 (6 innings) The Bald Eagles fell in game two, 9-1 to split the day with Mansfield.

Kennedy led the offense in this one, finishing with her second home run of the day when she sent a deep shot over the center field fence in the first inning.

Caputo, Carpenter, Criss and Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) all added hits in the game.

Day in the life of a football player Jamie Julio Rodriguez-Vega Guest Writer jjr9304@lockhaven.edu

To get ready for any type of game you need to have the maximum amount of preparation. So for me to be able to write this with full details in just one article is impossible. But, I will try my hardest to give you guys a view into the gameday of a football player at LHU. I am Jaime Julio RodriguezVega, a freshman outside linebacker. Our gameday starts 48 hours prior to the actual game. I personally try to clean my system by drinking a lot of water and eating lots of fruits and vegetables, as well as good proteins like chicken and nuts. I like to watch a lot of film prior to the game. I will always do this with another player never by myself due to the fact if I have any questions or see something that stands out we can communicate on the spot.

I try to keep my sleep schedule the same throughout the week so I will go to sleep at 12 A.M and wake up at 6 A.M. When I wake up we usually have a pre-game meeting to discuss the game plan. After the meeting we would go to bentley and eat our team breakfast where we talk and get a chance to know each other.

After breakfast is when it starts to get a little boring, we all pop in our headphones and listen to music to get ready mentally. Personally, I listen to alot of soft music to calm my heart rate down when I get nervous. Then we get taped up and rolled out and feel ready to go out for pre-game. That is when I turn my music up to a faster beat. I like to listen to lyrical rappers like KUR or Joyner Lucas to get me in to mood to hit hard and knock people down.

After the game my family usually is there to see me so I spend the rest of the day with them. We go eat out and go shopping at walmart for some snacks.

Then I say my goodbyes and hang out with my friends and enjoy the rest of the night.

LHU downed at by #25 IUP Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University lacrosse team (3-11, 1-8 PSAC) fell to No. 25 IUP (8-5, 6-3 PSAC), 19-10, this afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC).

Today’s conference game was the first of two games this week vs. top-25 opponents. LHU will host nationally-ranked West Chester Saturday at Charlotte Smith Field.

Today, Lauren Girardi (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) made 15 saves for the Bald Eagles. She now has 174 saves on the season and moved into the No. 2 spot all-time for a single-season. Her solid play and bigsave effort kept Lock Haven in the game today.

LHU trailed the host Crimson Hawks, 10-6 at halftime.

Caitlin Morrow (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa), Braxtin Reddinger (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford), Loren Librizzi (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) and Raleigh Bateman (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) led the Bald Eagles’ offensive unit.

Morrow netted three goals, while the trio of Bateman, Reddinger and Librizzi cominbed for six goals as each player scored a pair.

Reddinger recorded 11 draw controls and added an assist.

The Bald Eagles will host No. 7 West Chester on Saturday, April 20 at 1 p.m. West Chester played at Bloomsburg this afternoon. Since 2011, Lock Haven is 7-6 vs. West Chester in a series that has been nothing short of thrilling. For LHU, five of those seven wins have come at home vs. rival West Chester.
