President Pignatello’s Interview with Lock Haven University Students Nicole Chappelle Guest Writer

nsc8949@lockhaven.edu Making sure students have a voice in major decision making at the university and in the community was one goal that President of Lock Haven University, Robert Pignatello, mentioned when he was interviewed by students last Tuesday.

President Pignatello is a first generation American and one of the first in his family to obtain a college degree. Throughout his education and careers, Pignatello never thought that he would be in the position that he is today and describes how he “stumbled upon” the job although he knew at the time there was a need for more people to be involved in higher education. Students asked a variety of questions to better understand who Pignatello is and what his goals are on changing the Lock Haven community.

Pignatello described how he wants to provide a high-value education for all student that attend the university. One of Lock Haven’s communication professors, Sharon Stringer, asked “What is a high value high quality education in your mind?” Pignatello said, “Your success is our mission and success comes in many forms.” Pignatello went on to explain that he not only wants the students to be successful in school, but in life, too.

High quality education to Pignatello is not only the grades you receive but also the community that surrounds you and the professors that are here to guide each student to success.

When talking about the physical changes that may take place around campus, student Tess English asked, “Regarding the new bike system, how are you going to have cars and bikes coexist safely on campus?”

Pignatello explained that the cost of the new bike system is the first step to making this change. Having a transportation committee that students will be involved in was another idea that Pignatello had in mind regarding bikes, buses and cars on campus. Pignatello also informed students that skateboards will be allowed on campus now and that campus police will be on bikes during the warmer seasons.

Pignatello has many positive ideas for change in the LHU community.

When asked what he loves most about his new position, he explained, “I love being in a position where I can provide opportunities that I had and to show that realizing the value of an education can help students one day pursue and achieve lifetime careers.”

Inspirational speaker visits Lock Haven University Kiara Carson Co-Managing Editor

knc9459@lockhaven.edu Author of two books, popular keynote speaker and uplifting life coach/ counselor, Hailey Jordan Yatros, paid a visit to Lock Haven and inspired to students to truly embrace themselves and others.

Her talk consisted of teaching everyone how to lead by “being” and having this power of presence and true connection with yourself and your relationships. She wants open and clear communication when she works with people and asked students if they would be open to her even though she was a complete stranger. Yet, she amazingly achieved her goal because she was open to us about her life experiences so far. She’s dealt with a lot of trauma in her life, including dealing with child abuse and loss of property in a fire with one of her friends, but that doesn’t keep her down or kill the inspirational fire of passion she has for her work or care for others.

Yatros believes that vulnerability and honesty are key things to have when opening up about yourself and to recognize that your life is truly a gift. Life is all about being your own person and getting to know yourself as you continue to grow and change throughout the years. In order to recognize yourself, you have to recognize the important parts of your body: mind, body, and spirit.

Yatros says the mind can be beautiful or dangerous depending on your thoughts. The body is complex, but you have control. The spirit never changes; it is timeless with getting in touch with your feelings which should be radiating with positivity. With this in mind, she forms the four pillars of connection to which are tools to be used for building more relationships

and connections amongst your fellow peers. They consist of having a mental, emotional, and physical presence, being positively curious, being self-aware of everything around you and being other-person focused because even though it’s your life, there are others in it as well.

It’s important to talk about these difficult issues and finding yourselves because everyone is a part of a society that needs people to lead and protect it, we just all need to come together and be there for each other as a true community.

Red Cross blood drive on campus Cassandra Keller Co-Managing Editor

cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Students had an opportunity to donate blood during the Red Cross blood drive on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the Red Cross website, one bag of blood can save up to 3 lives. Donating blood is a good way to give to those who need it.

Amanda Biddle, a junior education major and regular blood donor, said: “Giving blood at blood drives is important because there may be a time where someone you know needs blood to save their life. My family has witnessed firsthand the importance of blood donations which is why I chose to donate.”

He’s full grown but everyone always thinks he’s just a little puppy because of how tiny he is. He loves running despite his 3 inch legs, and runs everywhere he goes. Sometimes he thinks he’s a big dog because he has a Siberian husky sister.

When they play he really thinks he’s going to win. 14/10 lover, loves kisses and his mommy Kylie.

April 11, 2019 A&E Ariana and Victoria bring new meaning to “Monopoly” Kiara Carson Co-Managing Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu At this point, nothing can really stop Ariana Grande from doing what she does best: making fantastic music. She recently released a single with one of her very close friends, Victoria Monét, not to get confused with her former co-star from “Victorious” Daniella Monet who played kooky character Trina Vega.

Victoria Monét is a very talented singer, songwriter and dancer who’s been in the music industry for about five years now producing four fun lyrical and rhythmic albums. Monét helped write Grande’s late 2018 hit “Thank U, Next” and now they’re practically inseparable and this just proves how strong their relationship is.

“Monopoly” describes the rich lifestyle that these two women have really come into since their careers as singers and performers have started. Then, it’ll talk about a lot of what the two best friends have in common with each other whether it pertains to how the industry is, how much money they’re making, what people they really mess with or don’t and they’re letting people know it’s all about the business and being successful for them.

It also expresses immense sexual preferences from the women declaring they both like men and women.

This particularly strikes up an interesting topic about Grande’s personal life because there have been multiple times, she’s been asked what gender she prefers

in a romantic relationship and there’s never been a straight answer from her.

Even after this new hit was released, Grande tweeted that she will not answer this question because she can date whoever she wants and it’s no one else’s business but their own.

Altogether, this song is a transcendent banger to listen to and will have you on your feet dancing with your best girl/boy friends celebrating life and what you have to look forward to especially if it involves making money with the people you love.

It’s also a reminder that never let the negative stuff get to you and let it wash away from your presence to be truly happy and make that bread. If you’re negative all the time or something’s clearly bringing you and your motivation down, then how will you ever learn to love life and all the great things it can come with.

You are you and no one can take that away from you other than yourself which Grande practically preaches in most of her songs including this one. She’s really grown up from those days at Nickelodeon playing a ditsy redhead. Now, she’s a woman learning more and more about herself and trying to lead an example for the young women and girls who listen to her music to inspire them about what it could be living as an independent woman looking out for herself in a male-dominated world.

7 “God’s Not Dead” or is he?

Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu The movie “God’s Not Dead” is about a college student who defends his faith to his philosophy professor, who is an atheist and the professor tries to convince his class that God was dead.

The college student does a lot of research to prove that God wasn’t dead, which wasn’t making his girlfriend happy and she broke up with him, and he succeeds at it by asking the class whether or not that God was dead after he’s done with all of the testimonies and gives them some time to think about it and it was unanimous that they thought that God wasn’t dead.

He even tried to get as to why his professor thought that God was dead and he found out that it was because he hated God because of him losing his mother to cancer. It became clear to the college student that his professor had been hurting since his mother died of cancer when he was young and came to hate God and came to think that God was dead to him.

On the way to a Newsboys concert, he gets hit by a car and the pastor of the church on campus prays over him because the professor is badly hurt. The professor repents and says that he wants to accept Jesus as his savior.

With an awesome and powerful cast of Shane Harper, Kevin Sorbo, David A. R. White, and Dean Cain, the film was anything, but tedious. There was an important issue that needed to be addressed amongst a college campus and the world, so the actors’ roles and dedication to this project was most important. There’s even a special appearance by Willie Robertson, Korie Robertson, and the christian band, The Newsboys making things even more eye-opening and impressionable.

This movie totally kept me engaged because it got really intense when the professor and the college student who was defending God and his faith was face-to-face with each other.

The acting was fantastic because the actors really got into character and they really gave out that tension that moviegoers would grasp onto and they really brought them to life. The music in the movie was really inspiring. It had a lot of christian songs playing throughout the movie.

Kiara Tinnin Lifestyles Editor kct4127@lockhaven.edu If you’ve just about had enough of it all then join the many of us that are balancing graduation and parents attitudes. Graduation is only four beautifully terrifying weeks away and the stress from parents make it feel like it’s next week.

If you have a large close-knit family like I do and you’ve grown up spending just about every moment with your family, then finding a way to fit them into your graduation is going to be a tough.

I will be graduating this spring and celebrating this great accomplishment along with others of the graduating class. Trying to keep focus is hard especially when family keeps stressing out about it. Everyone in my family knew that I was graduating this semester and before spring break I let them know of my plans for the big day.

When I talked to them just a week ago they all acted as if I was speaking french- which I do speak very well but this wasn’t the case- and proceeded as if they knew nothing. So it took me some time to get them back on track and it wasn’t easy.

First thing I had to do was make sure I have enough tickets for everyone that is coming. After a quick cringe worthy talk with my aunt, I found out that just about all my family is coming, which made my soul feel like it could

roll its eyes too because I didn’t know I had to tell everyone that only some of them could come. It was like I was denying my family a seat at my wedding from all the call phones I got from family I haven’t heard from in so long.

Everyone wanted to be there and take part in a happy moment in my life. Then a light bulb turned on and I wondered who they actually think I was getting married to, Wakanda or something? I would just have to let them know that the school only gives student a limited amount of tickets because LHU clearly thinks giving students enough tickets for graduation is asking for too much.

I have to make sure that everyone coming up booked their hotel room in advance and could go on this family tour of the campus. Most of my family has never seen the campus before, so giving them a inside look at the places I’ve been studying and spending my time at is a great family moment.

Graduation falling on mother’s day weekend is not helping either. It has turned my mom into a diva who wants the day all to herself, but can I blame her, not really. Then finding my outfit was a little bit of a challenge because when your ordering clothes online they always look good on the model but might look as good on the person ordering it.

The day I found the perfect dress literally brought me to tears just thinking of the long awaited goodbye that is coming soon. It put things into picture for me, my family just wants to enjoy these happy moments with me.

If your family is stressing you out about graduation just remember that this isn’t just your big moment, it’s a big moment for them as well.

Figuring out how to be happy

Tess English Online Editor tae7002@lockhaven.edu It’s easy to be caught up in the end of semester rush: studying for exams, doing final projects, working harder in that one class. All of these things add up and can bring end-of-the-semester-blues.

To keep them at bay, here are a few helpful tips on how to be happy: Find a balance- most people struggle with overworking themselves, but leaving yourself exhausted will lead to a lower quality of work. Find some time for yourself; take a quick break and watch that Netflix show you like or listen to that new album that recently came out.

Drink green tea- according to foodfinesasia.com, green tea boosts mental awareness, relieves stress, alleviates pain, and the warmth of a hot drink has soothing effects.

Spend time with loved ones- who doesn’t love spending time with those closest to them?

Be thankful for the little things- According to Harvard Health in an article Giving thanks to make you happier, practicing gratitude in daily life and focusing on the positive will boost happiness.

Be around someone who is happy- Experiencing empathy around a happy person will help better your mood and put you in more positive mind set.

Minimum wage for the change Cassandra Keller Co-Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Anyone who works on campus knows what it’s like working for minimum wage. For some, minimum wage is a fine rate since they might not have little-to-none monthly bills. For others, minimum wage may barely make ends meet or even not at all. Many may have to take on multiple jobs.

Increasing the minimum wage seems like the simplest answer, right? I thought the same thing before I did the research before writing this article. The issues surrounding minimum wage are far too complex to be solved with simple answers.

Part of the reason minimum wage is such a controversial topic is that minimum wage hasn’t kept up with inflation. Therefore, workers who are paid the minimum struggle to pay for daily needs, property expenses and other costs. While increasing their pay will initially help to cover those costs, someone has to pay that extra money from somewhere else.

In the same way that raising the minimum would help close the gap created by inflation, it can also make it worse. George Reisman, a professor emeritus of economics at Pepperdine University, said: “The higher the wages are, the higher the costs of production are.

The higher the costs of production are, the higher the prices are. The higher the prices are, the smaller the quantities of goods and services are demanded and smaller the number of workers employed in producing them.”

Businesses would have to make up the difference someway, whether it be by finding cheaper alternatives such as layoffs, fewer hours for employes not layed off or even automated systems.

Minimum wage can be a blessing for some and a curse for others.

I believe that if the right balance can be found where the minimum wage can be raised to its max while doing minimal damage to businesses, then the minimum wage should be raised to that ideal equilibrium. Sadly that equilibrium is only a dream within a dream in today’s business practices.

Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu To me, Easter is all about Jesus being raised from the dead and giving me a new spirit, which took away my sins.

We’re taught at a young age that Easter is about the Easter Bunny hiding eggs, getting a lot of candy and going to church for Easter. When my little sister and I were little, we would go to our grandparent’s house for an easter egg hunt and they would hide $5 worth of change in a certain number of eggs.

When I got older, they just put a $5 bill in my egg. Ever since I started college, my grandfather has given me more than $5 for spending cash. When I come home for Easter, I love spending a little time with my family. I remember the one year I found one of my eggs in the muffler of my grandfather’s truck and I couldn’t get it out because of how big it was, so I had to get my cousin give it a try; he eventually got it out by kicking the egg and hitting it.

For a few years, me, my mother and my grandmother did an Easter play called, “Bow the Knee.” It was about a soldier during the time of Jesus who came to follow Jesus because of the miracles that he saw Jesus do. He felt guilty whenever he was one of the soldiers who put Jesus on the cross, so he decided to follow Jesus. The soldier was overjoyed when

he found that Jesus had risen from the dead and was alive. It was really fun to do a play, and we changed so many lives every year that we did the play. However, after a few years, we stopped because so many of our cast members were leaving and going their separate ways.

Overall, I have always enjoyed Easter and I am grateful that it has always held a religious significance in my life.

Trust in the media is at an all-time low Daniel Weber

The nearly two-year-long Mueller investigation sent left leaning reporters and news organizations on a futile fishing expedition. In the end it provided further evidence of biased reporting when the results of the probe did not prove collusion on the part of President Trump. Meanwhile, a new survey conducted for the Columbia Journalism Review [CJR] showed that the level of trust in mainstream news sources is at an all-time low and that the end may be near for print journalism.

“It’s no wonder the public’s trust in the media has eroded,” says Brent Bozell, President of the Media Research Center near Washington, DC. “For nearly two years, liberal talking heads and reporters pushed the narrative that President Trump was guilty of ‘collusion.’ When Trump was exonerated, the media collectively reversed course. It’s unfortunate that dishonest, one-sided journalism has become the norm. Thankfully, the American public see right through it,” Bozell added.

CJR partnered with Reuters/Ipsos for the poll of 4,214 adults, which found that the media is at the bottom of the list of institutions in which the public has trust. Interestingly, the researchers noted that Democrats apparently are the only demographic group that “expressed positive confidence in the press.”

Meanwhile, a veteran, mainstream journalist, former CBS News correspondent Lara Logan, has accused her colleagues in the media of an outright leftist bias in their reporting.

“Logan confirmed what we already knew: ‘all the [media] coverage all the time on Trump is negative’,” says Dan Weber, president of the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. “Perhaps that is why Democrats have a favorable view of journalists, while most Americans say they don’t trust them.”

Logan expressed the notion that the media, at large, has an anti-Trump bias during an interview with Mike Ritland on his Mike Drop Podcast recently. She pointed out that “85 percent of journalists are registered Democrats.”

This is no surprising revelation, says Weber. “We’ve always known that the media leans left. Even the Washington Post admits that ‘the characterization of mainstream media newsrooms as left-leaning hives indeed has documentary backing.’

What’s new is that the media has abandoned its pretense of being impartial and open-minded. As Logan put it, reporters have ‘become political activists in a sense and, some could argue, propagandists.’ That’s the scary part.”

Just how prevalent is media bias? According to Investor’s Business Daily [IBF], “pretty much all of journalism now leans left.” Citing a Rasmussen poll conducted last fall, the newspaper reports that 45% of the likely voters” in the midterm elections believed “that when most reporters write about a congressional race, they are trying to help the Democratic candidate.”

Investor’s Business Daily also cited a study conducted by Arizona State University and Texas A&M University that showed even the majority of financial journalists now identify themselves as “somewhat liberal” or “very liberal.” Four-hundred-

sixty-two financial reporters were surveyed and more than 58% of them turned out to be overwhelmingly liberal. Not long ago financial journalists had a reputation as “the most right-leaning and free-market-oriented among mainstream journalists.”

The study found that “liberal journalists are more likely to say it’s important that financial journalism promotes social or economic justice, which suggests that political persuasion impacts business reporting. It also discovered that liberal reporters outnumbered conservatives by 13 to one and that they felt that “promoting social or economic justice is an important objective of journalism.”

Seton Hall University professor of journalism Matthew Pressman says journalistic objectivity began to evolve during the McCarthy Hearings of 1954. And, in the 1960s the definition of objective reporting changed. Political activism became more pervasive and anti-war, equal rights and other protest movements were initiated. Journalists routinely began to report not “just the facts,” adding analysis and interpretation in their reports.

“This new understanding of objectivity attempted to draw a line between journalists’ professional judgments (O.K. to include in a news report) and their personal opinions (not O.K.),” Pressman explains.

News reporters are bound by a code of ethics, according to Weber. “They are supposed to stick to the facts. They should not be taking advantage of the stories they are covering to promote personal agendas. Editorials are for the editorial pages.

It’s bad enough that anyone with a computer, a basic knowledge of grammar and a vivid imagination can be a reporter these days by posting so-called news stories on the Internet.

But when mainstream reporters do it, we all lose. We lose confidence in the purpose and accuracy of the stories we read in the morning paper and those we watch on the evening news.”

Athletes of the week Max Joseph

Baseball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Max Joseph of the Lock Haven baseball team had a big week to help lead LHU to a four-game sweep of Mansfield. For the week, Joseph hit .500 with two doubles, four runs scored and five RBI’s.

He posted an on-base percentage of .583 and also posted a slugging percentage of .700.

His weekend was highlighted by a huge game in the final game of the series in which he finished 3-4 with a double, a run scored and three RBI’s in the 4-1 win.

Track & Field Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Distance star Laurel Moyer had quite the weekend at the Colonial Relays. On Friday, she finished 15th out of 85 in a deep 1,500-meter field. Her time of 4:40.56 was clearly a PSAC mark and ranks as the fourth-fastest time in school history.

On Saturday, she came back and capped a brilliant weekend with a pair of record relay runs. She anchored the DMR to a school record of 12:39.56 with a sizzling mile leg. Less than one hour later she was back and ran a 4:44 leg on the way to the Bald Eagle’s school record in the 4x1500-meter relay (19:59.73).

Baseball outlasts IUP in extra inning barn-burner Adam Kaylor

Graduate Assistant ank4635@lockhaven.edu INDIANA, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (12-14-1) outlasted Indiana University of Pennsylvania (8-20), 18-17, on Tuesday afternoon in a wild 35-run affair.

The East-West Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) thriller saw its 35 runs plated via 36 hits and 17 walks.

Lock Haven got the party started in the top of the first inning, striking first after an error by the Crimson Hawks. IUP responded immediately in their half of the inning and jumped out to a 3-1 lead. That score held until the fourth inning when the Bald Eagles tied the game a 3-3.

In the top of sixth inning, LHU took a 7-5 advantage, but it disappeared quickly after a seven-run outburst by IUP. Lock Haven battled back over the next two innings to grab the 13-12 advantage in the eighth inning. IUP tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning to force extra innings.

In the wild tenth inning, Lock Haven took back the lead in the top half of the inning. The Bald Eagles poured in five more runs to push the score to 18-13. The Haven weathered one final IUP onslaught to win 18-17.

The Haven racked up its 18 runs on 21 hits, including four from Brandon Miller (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain), and three each from Colby Hiddemen (Honey Brook, Pa./Twin Valley), Jimmy Webb (Montoursville, Pa/Loyalsock) and Cameron Kutchey (Smithsburg, Md./Smithsburg). Miller, Webb and Kutchey all notched two RBI’s, and Hiddemen drove in one run.

Max Joseph (Marlton, N.J./Harford CC) and Miller led the Bald Eagles in RBI’s with three. Jimmy Webb (Montoursville, Pa/Loyalsock) and Isaac Porter (Beech Creek, Pa./St. Bonaventure) drove in two runs each and both had crucial RBI’s in the tenth inning.

The 21 hits and 18 runs are the most since 2018’s 20 run and 21 hit explosion against California University of Pennsylvania on March 14.

UP NEXT: The Bald Eagles will open a four-game PSAC East series with Kutztown on Friday (April 12). LHU will open the league series on the road Friday at Kutztown with Game 1 of the doubleheader set for a 1 p.m. first pitch. Lock Haven and KU will play again on Saturday, back in Lock Haven. Game 1 Saturday is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

SATURDAY (April 13) PROMOTIONS: Saturday is Youth Day, an Athlete Ally game, a showcase of PSAC Sportsmanship week and LHU President Robert Pignatello will throw out the first pitch before Game 1.

Balanced effort leads LHU to sweep of Goldey-Beacom Ryan Bogaczyk

Graduate Assistant rjb7979@lockhaven.edu WILMINGTON, De. – The Lock Haven University softball team (19-13) used a solid balance of timely hitting and dominant pitching to lead the way as LHU swept Goldey-Beacom College (8-22) in a doubleheader Monday in Wilmington, Delaware. The Bald Eagles took both games by a score of 6-1 over The Lightning.

Game One: W, 6-1 Lock Haven captured the win in game one, 6-1.

After GBC opened the game with a 1-0 lead through two innings of play, LHU was able to tie it up at 1-1 in the third, thanks to an RBI double from Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore).

Still tied 1-1 in the seventh, The Bald Eagles opened the floodgates and scored five runs to take a commanding five run lead and led 6-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh.

Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) shut the door on this one and Lock Haven was able to win game one, 6-1.

Caputo had a big game at the plate, going 2-4 with two doubles, three RBI’s and a run scored. Her two-run double in the top of the seventh put LHU ahead 3-1 and sparked the team as they hung five runs on the scoreboard in the inning.

Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) added two hits and two runs scored for the Bald Eagles while Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./ North Pocono), Rachel Gricoski (Frackville, Pa./North Schuylkill) and Madison Mathes (Hammonton, Pa./Hammonton) all finished with RBI’s. Carpenter also added a double.

Slattery was once again stellar on the mound, throwing a completegame four-hitter. She allowed just one earned run and struck out 14 for the third consecutive game and has 54 strikeouts over her last four starts.

The 14 strikeouts in the game took Slattery to over 700 K’s in her career. She currently sits at 707 strikeouts, good for second all-time in a Lock Haven career. She trails only LHU great and two-time National Player of the Year Kristin Erb, who sits at 1388 career K’s.

Game Two: W, 6-1 LHU took game two by a final score of 6-1 to sweep the doubleheader over GBC. This game turned out to be a pitchers dual, as the teams were tied at 0-0 until the sixth inning until Criss drilled a bases-loaded double to

left field that cleared the bases and put Lock Haven ahead 3-0.

The Lightning cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning, but The Bald Eagles tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh to extend the lead to 6-1 and held on to get the win and the sweep.

Caputo and Criss led the way in game two offensively as the duo recorded five RBI’s for Lock Haven. Caputo finished 2-4 with a run scored and two RBI’s while Criss finished 2-3 with a double and three RBI’s.

Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) pitched a gem in the circle for LHU, throwing 5 innings while allowing just two hits, no earned runs and struck out five. She did not allow a hit through her first five innings in the game.

Up Next: The Bald Eagles will have a few days off after playing six games over the last three days. LHU will return to the field Friday, April 12 when the teams hosts Mansfield University in a PSAC Central doubleheader matchup. Those games are scheduled for 2:30/4:30 start times.
