LHU Students represent at the state capitol Cassandra Keller Co-Managing Editor

cmk2356@lockhaven.edu 19 LHU students and faculty along with dozens of Pennsylvania college students went to Harrisburg on Mar 27 to show their support for the PA Promise bills.

A rally was held in the capitol building to encourage legislators to pass the PA Promise bills, SB 111 and HB 244, that would make college more affordable to students.

According to the U.S. Department of Education, student debt for the State System students has increased by 132 percent. Jordan Harris, a democratic legislator, said “No young person in this commonwealth should graduate with a mountain of debt.”

Kenneth Marsh, the president of the Association of Pennsylvania State College & University Faculties(APSCUF), said, “ It[student debt] all starts with them[legislators] not properly funding public higher education. Therefore, the tuition going up, fees going up, housing costs going up, students have to borrow more money. It’s a vicious cycle.”

Various students also got to share their stories at the rally. Catherine Zerfing, a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, shared her experiences as a child growing up homeless and how she doesn’t want her own children to have those experiences. Zerfing said, “With the Pennsylvania Promise, we can reward hard work because we reward hard work on campuses across the state with a degree.”

Student participation in rallies like the one in Harrisburg is a way for students to voice their opinions to legislators. Marsh said, “It’s really good for the legislators to see that the students care. It’s also good for the students to see that the legislators care. People need to see that so that they can continue to build that support.”

When asked why a rally like the PA Promise rally is important to students, Jack Russo, A junior history major at Lock Haven University, said, “Along with taxation, civil participation is one of the few things

required of United States citizens.”

The PA promise rally allowed students and faculty to share their stories and demonstrate their needs. Dr Erin Kennedy, the chair of the psychology department at Lock Haven University, said, “It’s time to get the word out. I see too many students who have difficulty paying those last little bit of bills. It[college costs] shouldn’t be that much of a detriment.”

Let her voice be heard Kiara Carson Co-Managing Editor

knc9459@lockhaven.edu The HOPE center and the English club pulled together a really great and inspiring event involving multiple young women presenting a poem or piece of literature written by any female author that talks about bringing empowerment and attention to the amazing aspects of women. Each piece that was presented was amazingly beautiful, moving, and enlightening to the pro-feminist cause. The audience, consisting of LHU faculty, students, and some of Lock Haven’s locals, were very impressed with the many different selections that were introduced to them. This event was one for the history books for showing a strong representation of women who can come together and relate to what everyone (even most of the greats) have been through just because of their femininity.

Fatman was adopted from the Clinton County SPCA this past September. He is a little over a year old. He loves to sleep, lay around, and eat. He has a shortened tail that is crooked.

Roxanne Bell News Editor rab484@lockhaven.edu I usually don’t like art displays, but this one was marvelous. Everything seems like it took years to create, but these artists did it in half a semester.

My favorites were acrylic paintings from Shatana Griffin. At first, the vibrant colors caught my attention because they were so bright and all meshed very well together. Usually, these colors are associated with happiness, but as I looked closer I realized Griffin had other ideas in mind.

The three people of color featured in her art had tears coming down their faces. They each had different cultures and backgrounds, most likely from separate countries, but still treated the same. It’s clear that Griffin’s paintings had a deep meaning behind them.

“Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” Netflix edition Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu The movie “Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle” is about the backstory of Mowgli from “The Jungle Book”and how he was raised by wolves and was determined to take down a dangerous tiger named Shere Khan, who is trying to take over the jungle and cause a battle between the jungle and the manvillage.

At first he is trained to become a wolf because he thinks he is one but the stakes are rising higher and higher because of Shere Khan creating chaos to take over the jungle so Bagheera, the panther who found him, decides to tell Mowgli to go to the manvillage so that Shere Khan won’t come after him.

Shere Khan is also trying to kill Mowgli because he already killed his human parents when Mowgli was an infant. It’s kind of like this sick little game and obsession he has with Mowgli and his situation of him not being where he belongs which is the jungle.

Mowgli doesn’t like the idea of leaving the place he’s called home for years now, but he goes anyway after he is caught by the hunter and put in a cage. The hunter eventually lets Mowgli out and he teaches him how to hunt and how to behave like a man. Mowgli starts to like being in the village and he considers it his new home.

The movie has the cast of Christian Bale as Bagheera, Cate Blanchett as Kaa, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shere Khan, Andy Serkis as Baloo, and Rohan Chand as Mowgli.

It was directed by Andy Serkis and is still available for viewing on Netflix.

This is one of the many fantastic adaptations that has been produced ever since the original came out back in the 1950’s. All the adaptations, animated or not, tell the same story of how Mowgli conquers the many struggles of being a human and lving in the jungle and each time it’s told, it gets better and better.

Of course, not every adaptation is the exact same because who really wants the same old thing over and over? You have to add differences so your audience doesn’t get bored and to splash a little flavor in the story, which they accomplish almost everytime.

I thought the actors did an amazing job with playing the characters and making them come to life. I remember seeing the old Disney cartoon of “The Jungle Book” and I could imagine the actors playing those parts.

The music really went with the scenes in the movie as well because it made a lot of the scenes more intense and kept you engaged with the movie.

The worst job to ever have

Balancing work and procrastination

Cassandra Keller Co-Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Procrastination is every college student’s worst enemy when trying to get some class work or projects done. Procrastination can be a bad thing in the way that it keeps you from getting your work done, but procrastination can also be good in the way it gives your brain a break when it feels like you can’t do more work.

You just have to find the balance between work and procrastination.

First off, stop thinking that procrastination is all bad. By definition, procrastination is the act of putting off or delaying something. So taking a break from doing work is technically procrastination, but taking short breaks isn’t a bad thing.

Breaking up the work helps to pull apart the work and make it more manageable. Instead of looking at all the work that has to get done, breaking things into smaller tasks makes the work less overwhelming and makes you less likely to procrastinate because you don’t think you can do the work. It will be easy for you to get the smaller task done, then before you know it you’ll be through all the thing you needed to do for the day.

Prioritizing the small tasks you have to do by how difficult they are will help too. If you work on the harder tasks you have to do first, you’ll have the most energy and brain power to do those harder tasks than you would have, had you done those ones last. By doing things that way, you are less likely to burn out and pro-

crastinate harder tasks. This will make it less stressful on you as you finish your work.

Distractions is also a problem when trying to find a balance in work and procrastination. Having distractions make it easier to lose focus and procrastinate.

Easy ways to remove distractions is to find a place that works best for you. Only you know what distracts you, so it’s up to you to find the right place with the least distractions for you.

Other small things you can do to eliminate distractions is to listen to lyric free music. Certain music is designed specifically to help keep you focused. Even just shutting off your phone and putting it out of sight can help to eliminate distractions.

Lastly, once your done getting your work done, celebrate! The only way you are going to feel better about getting through your workload is celebrating the fact that you did it. It’s also a great way to pat yourself on the back when you’ve done a good job. It helps relieve you of that constant feeling that work is just piling up every time you look at it.

In the end, you have to know what works best for you. As long as you know your procrastination habits, you can figure out ways to get your work done and still procrastinate positively. So in a way, you can plan your procrastination. Even writing this article, I had to work around my procrastination habits. Overall, procrastination, like most things, is good in moderation. You just have to find the balance.

Nigel Farage: on campus grounds Tess English

Online Edtior tae7002@1ockhaven.edu Nigel Farage, the mastermind of Brexit, will be a guest speaker for the LHU’s Young Americans for Liberty club at the end of this month, but is he really the kind of man students want on campus? While his expertise and political accomplishments are impressive or at least impactful, Farage has an ungraceful words that come off as xenophobic. As an university that promotes equality, has a somewhat diverse population, and hosts foreign exchange students, we should ask: is a xenophobic influence something that should be allowable on campus?

First and foremost, Farage is accomplished it is easy to see why the Young Americans for Liberty club are interested in listening to him speak.

Perhaps notably of his achievements is touted as the face of Brexit as was he was a founding member of United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).

The significance of this is that in the 2014 UK election, Farage himself lead a British third party into popular vote in the national election.

Farage has been caught many times with his foot in his mouth, to say the least. In an interview with Leading Britain’s Conversation (LBC) radio in 2016, Farage was asked about the difference between having German children as neighbors and a group Romanian men as neighbors Farage said, “I was asked if a group of Romanian men moved in next to you, would you be concerned? And if you lived in London, I think you would be.”

Farge is also on the record for being pro-businesses having the choice to be discriminatory towards nationalities when hiring. This is evident in the Telegraph’s Nigel Farage: Bosses should be allowed to discriminate between Britons and foreigners. The article states, “‘Mr Farage added: “I would argue that the law does need changing, and that if an employer wishes to choose, or you can use the word ‘discriminate’ if you want to, but wishes to choose to employ a British-born person, they should be allowed to do so. … I think you should be able to choose on the basis of nationality, yes. I do.’”

Farage has also been caught using anti-feminist remarks. The Independent reported that while discussing breastfeeding, Farage said, “I think that given that some people feel very embarrassed by it, it isn’t too difficult to breastfeed a baby in a way that’s not openly ostentatious. Or perhaps sit in the corner, or whatever it might be.”

While this is controversial topic, many would not be offended by this, but is noteworthy to the more liberal-minded or anyone apart of the Free the Nipple campaign.

Nigel Farage is not the kind of speaker that makes all feel comfortable on campus and is strongly not worth having at LHU. People should feel safe at the university, and if you wish to hold a controversial speaker, more questions should be asked of him on his prejudicial behaviors.

Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu Most students like watching movies in class because it means one thing: they don’t have to do any work. I’m the same way with watching movies in class, but it depends on what the movie is, but maybe that’s just because I’ve always been more of a visual learner than an auditory or an oral learner. I think it depends on what the movie is because sometimes the movie can go along with what you’re learning in class and that can be a good visualization of what you’re learning. Other times, it could just be because it’s getting towards the end of the year and the teacher might prefer to relax the last few days of the school year.

I remember in high school when we were studying the Great Depression in a history class, we watched the movie “Cinderella Man.” It was awesome because it gave us a good idea of what it was like during that time. Another good example was in middle school when my class watched “The Grapes of Wrath,” “Gettysburg,” and “The Patriot,” because we were studying the Civil War. In my religion class in middle school, when we were studying the priest, Romero, so we watched the movie “Romero.”

I think watching movies in class can be helpful whether or not that you’re learning about what the movie is about for a few reasons. Even if the movie isn’t what you’re learning about, it can help you de-stress and give your brain a break from taking in all that knowledge. Your brain may only weigh three pounds but there’s only so much information your brain

can take in. Otherwise, you’ll overwork yourself and it could cause you to shut down. It’s nice when you can just relax, watch a movie and give your brain a break.

According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the food waste in the U.S. is estimated to be 30-40 percent of the food supply.

This is an obvious issue, one that needs attention. Working in the food industry for many years is what first opened my young eyes to see the huge issue our country has with food waste.

Every night at closing there was always a copious amount of packaged food to be thrown away, no matter what. A coffee shop I worked in Muncy, Pa. was so strict with the rules that even employees weren’t allowed to take home any of the food being tossed.

The kicker? Most of it was not even stamped as expired. Certain companies just have regulations in place to make sure that food is not remotely close to the point of spoiling. While it makes sense and it’s beneficial for health purposes, there is a massive amount of food waste.

I remember feeling so bad every night tossing it all, painfully aware that some people in this world—and even in my hometown—were going to sleep starving that night, yet there were air-tight rules that needed to be followed. If they weren’t, my job would be on the line, which is no exaggeration.

These were just a few food places in a small town. Think about all the places that serve food in the nation, in the world. Think about what all they need to toss every night. Think about your school cafeteria.

Here at LHU, there is SO MUCH thrown away just from Upper, and even more from Lower, plus Starbucks, the Bentley Market, and NanoBites.

Lock Haven University alone has so much food

waste that has no good purpose to serve.

The good news is that there are options, especially for this campus. The typical person may not be able to change much with major corporations and food servicers, but there is possibility for change at LHU. We could potentially look into giving away some of the uneaten food to local people in need. Another option is creating a composter of some sort, one that could eventually be used in a community garden.

Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Senior Marcus Disbrow (Jonestown, Pa./Northern Lebanon) had a monster outing at the Jim Taylor Invitational hosted by Susquehanna University. He won the hammer throw with a spectacular effort of 193-04.00. It was a personal-best throw and the second-best mark in LHU history. At the time of the throw, it was the best in the PSAC by nearly 30 feet. As of Monday morning, it was still 15-feet better than the next best thrower in the league. It marked an NCAA Divisions II provisional mark and a PSAC championship qualifying mark. It currently ranks 10th in Division II. Disbrow followed it up with another strong effort in the discus throw. His personal-best throw of 152-05.00 (2nd overall at the meet) hit a PSAC qualifying mark and was just shy of an NCAA mark. It’s the eighth-best mark in LHU history and currently ranks fifth in the PSAC.

The triple-jump outing proved to be a PSAC mark and season-best.

Both of Long’s marks rank among the top-15 all-time in school history in the two respective events.

Marsteller named PSAC Athlete of the Year, Moore named Coach of the Year Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Redshirt-senior Chance Marsteller of the Lock Haven University wrestling team has been named the 2018-19 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Year and LHU head coach Scott Moore was named the PSAC Coach of the Year.

For 2018-19, a new structure was put into place to recognize the award winners among the Division I +and Division II participants.

The duo helped lead the Bald Eagles to another banner year.

On Monday (April 1), Marsteller was also named the 2018-19 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) Athlete of the Year while Moore was also named the EWL Coach of the Year.

Marsteller capped a brilliant Lock Haven career on the mats with a second All-American honor. Marsteller finished third in a deep 165-pound weight class at the 2019 NCAA Division I Championships.

After a loss in the quarterfinals, Marsteller went on a tear and won four straight bouts – knocking off the No. 1, 3 and 4 seed – on the way to the third-place finish. In the third-place bout, he knocked off No. 4 seed Evan Wick, avenging a pair of losses to the Wisconsin Badger.

The third-place finish marked Marsteller's second straight trip to the podium and he became Lock Haven's first two-time All-American since JaMarr Billman in 2001 and 2002. Marsteller became the Bald Eagles 10th wrestler to earn multiple All-American honors.

Marsteller's impressive march back through the consolation bracket delighted the packed PPG Arena and brought a standing ovation from 18,000-plus fans when his hand was raised following his bronze medal victory.

Marsteller, a 2019 Southern Scuffle finalist, finished the season at 28-3 overall and he recorded 72 wins in two seasons for the Bald Eagles.

Last season, Marsteller won a school-record 44-matches.

Moore, a finalist for national coach of the year, took home PSAC and EWL Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season.

Behind two All-Americans (Marsteller & Kyle Shoop, 141), the Bald Eagles finished 18th at the NCAA Championships. It marked LHU's second straight top-20 finish. This season's 18th-place finish saw Lock Haven top Big Ten schools Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois, Maryland, Purdue,

Michigan State and Indiana. The Bald Eagles also beat North Carolina, Virginia, Duke, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Army, Navy and local-rival Bucknell.

The strong finish at the national tournament capped a sensational all-around season for Marsteller, Moore and Lock Haven.

During the regular season, LHU claimed the 2018-19 PSAC Division I Championship. Lock Haven's win over Clarion on February 10 pushed Lock Haven to a perfect 3-0 in DI PSAC duals. The 3-0 record helped LHU claim the 2018-19 PSAC DI dual-meet championship. The DI PSAC wins came over Bloomsburg, Edinboro and Clarion, marking Lock Haven's first PSAC sweep in 17 years. It was during the 2001-02 season where Lock Haven last beat Bloomsburg, Edinboro and Clarion in the same season.

At one point, LHU was ranked as high as No. 14 in the dual rankings. Once again, Kyle Shoop led the nation in the tech falls.

During the regular season, the Bald Eagles won 46 of 60 EWL duals with a 59 percent bonus-point rate.

Even more impressive, 12 LHU wrestlers were named to All-Academic Team after achieving a GPA of 3.0 or higher during the fall 2018 semester.

In just six seasons, Moore has led 25 student-athletes to the national tournament.

Saturday, March 9 proved to be a historic and dominant day for LHU wrestling, as the nationally-ranked Bald Eagles crowned six individual champions and soared by the tournament field on the way to the 2019 EWL Championship. It marked LHU's second straight conference title. The six champions are the most for Lock Haven in EWL Tournament history. All six individual EWL champions booked trips to the 2019 NCAA Championships and ChancMarsteller was named the tournament's most outstanding wrestler.

The Bald Eagles rolled through the regular season and racked up 10 dual wins, which included non-conference wins over nationally-ranked Arizona State and Southern Conference (SoCon) champion Appalachian State. LHU finished the regular season dual slate at 10-3.

Lock Haven soared in EWL action on the way to the regular season crown. The win over Cleveland State on February 16 helped LHU cap an undefeated (6-0) run through EWL action. The perfect 6-0 dual record helped the Bald Eagles clinch the EWL regular season title. It marked LHU's first regular season EWL crown since the 1995-96 season. Ironically enough, that was the last time Lock Haven was perfect (6-0) in EWL duals.

Lock Haven splits doubleheader with Shippensburg Ryan Bogaczyk Graduate Assistant

rjb7979@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team (1412) split today in a doubleheader against visiting Shippensburg University (16-12) at Lawrence Field Tuesday afternoon. The Bald Eagles were able to edge the Raiders, 3-2 in game one before the Raiders held off LHU, 4-2 in game two.

Game one: W, 3-2 Lock Haven outlasted Ship, 3-2 in game one of the doubleheader.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, LHU was able to hang three runs on the board to take a 3-1 lead. Faith Ceely (Troy, Pa./Troy) tied the game up at 1-1 when she used an infield single with the bases loaded to score Sara Gsell (Waynesboro, Pa./Wayneboro).

Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) then stepped to the plate with the bases loaded once again in the inning and sent a single back up the middle that scored two runs and gave Lock Haven the 3-1 advantage.

Ship made a late charge in the top of the seventh, but it wasn’t enough as The Bald Eagles were able to hold on for the 3-2 victory.

Caputo led the offense in game one with her two-run single. Ceely added a single and a RBI while Rachel Gricoski (Frackville, Pa. North Schuylkill), Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and Bree Hilty (Lock Haven, Pa./Central Mountain) all added hits as well for The Haven. Hilty also scored a run.

Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) pitched another

outstanding game in the circle, throwing a complete-game threehitter while striking out 12.

Game two: L, 4-2 The Bald Eagles fell in game two to the Raiders, 4-2.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the seventh inning, LHU used a huge, two-run double from Mathes to cut the Shippensburg lead in half as the Raiders led 4-2.

Ship was able to hold off the final Lock Haven surge to get the 4-2 win as the teams split the doubleheader.

Mathes led the Haven offense with a great game at the plate. She finished the contest 3-4 with a double and two RBI’s as she did her best to rally the Bald Eagles late. Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) also had a good game at the dish, finishing with two hits.

Caputo finished with a single and a run scored while also pitching 3 shutout innings. She allowed just three hits in a strong effort in the circle.

Up next: Lock Haven will stay at home for the next series when the Bald Eagles host Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central division foe IUP. That doubleheader is scheduled for Friday, April 5 with a 2:30 PM start.

Lacrosse falls to No. 9 ESU Adam Kaylor Graduate Assistant

ank4635@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University lacrosse team (3-7, 1-4 PSAC) fell to No. 9 East Stroudsburg (9-2, 6-0 PSAC), 21-11, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Tuesday afternoon at Charlotte Smith Field.

Lock Haven looked poised to pull off the shocker over the No. 9 Warriors in the first half. On the back of five first half goals from Kate Hooper (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary Anglican Girls School) the Bald Eagles trailed by a slim 10-9 margin at the half. East Stroudsburg, however, would pull away in the second half thanks to seven goals from Krista Mitarotonda.

Offensively, Hooper finished her day leading The Haven attack net-

ting six goals. Caitlin Morrow (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and Zoe Waddell (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) each scored twice for the Bald Eagles. Loren Librizzi (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) dished out a team high two assists.

Lauren Girardi (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) made save after save in an attempt to keep The Haven within touching distance and totaled 16 saves on the day.

LHU will be back in action on Saturday, April 6 when they travel to Mercyhurst. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
