Young Americans for Liberty club hosts guest speaker Kiara Carson Co-Managing Editor
knc9459@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven University and the Young Americans for Liberty club welcomed speaker, professor, and author Dr. Mike Adams on campus for his talk about fighting for the freedom of association and fully exercising everyone’s first amendment right among campuses. He wanted to dispel misconceptions and set the facts straight across the country. He believes that calling attention to something you believe in for the betterment of society and the youth today can be helpful in the long run. Adams often related these issues with politics and the law to give a better sense on how one can defend any association that is being wronged for trying to silence the things that certain people want to be represented within certain groups. He expressed that there are a lot of misconceptions and threats that make it difficult to get the right kind of exposure out there. Those misconceptions may give people the wrong idea about campus free speech, especially with political parties and their views on the situation. Leftists think that campus free speech is nothing and rightists think free speech is a battle against conservatives, but they’re both wrong according to Adams. He says that the real enemies are college administrators and the threats they pose to this idea of campuses and their students speaking up about their differ-
ent ideas and beliefs. Some laws and rules can be a threat to this initiative. For example, the first amendment doesn’t acknowledge or protect the freedom of association, even though it is technically an example of exercising your freedom of speech. Then, there are some who recognize the associations, but unfairly cut their funding as a form of resistance to what they believe. The campus speech code is put in place to censor or silence what some people may perceive as “offensive speech” shown on campuses. This is also going against the first amendment. These are issues that need to be called out and have action taken against in order to show the masses of importance and significance in your beliefs that are being challenged and threatened. Adams said the most important thing to do to protect your cause is to expose the story of the wrongdoing against your association and get the public opinion. This is bad news against the people trying to shut you down and good exposure for your voice to be heard about the cause and may cause more people to help you fight in the long run. You may disagree or agree with the points he makes, but he’s right that it’s all up to you, your opinions to stand by them, and take action in relation to it.

Veteran’s Center now open Cassandra Keller Co-Managing Editor
cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Student Veteran Alliance (SVA) club and president Robert Pignatello opened a new Veteran’s Center in Zimmerli G1A and held a ribbon cutting ceremony to commemorate the opening on Mar 7. The center provides a space for military students to relax and watch TV. The center is also equipped with various appliances as well two computers and Common Access Card (CAC) readers where they can use their military ID. The SVA club now holds their meetings at the Veteran’s Center at 3 p.m. every Wednesday. Any student is welcome to come to the SVA club meeting and to check out the new Veteran’s Center.

Thursday 28, 2019 A&E “New Girl” may reflect your future Tiana Gair Copy Editor teg5895@lockhaven.edu Once when I was younger, my mother and I randomly came across one of the most hilarious shows that I have ever had the pleasure of watching: “New Girl.” We instantly fell in love with the array of quirky characters and the modern depiction of their personal lives. Quickly it became a weekly tradition for us, and the rest is history. Here’s why. Zooey Deschanel stars as Jess, an odd, 30-something middle school teacher who happens to be the center of the show. In the first episode, she breaks up with a long-time lover and moves into a Los Angeles loft with 3 men: Schmidt (Max Greenfield), Winston (Lamorne Morris), and Nick (Jake Johnson). Jess also has a best friend named Cece (Hannah Simone), who happens to co-star as well, although she doesn’t live with the rest of them. All of their occupations are LA-esque in their own ways. Schmidt has a career in marketing, where he works primarily with women who seem to not take him seriously. Nick is a law school drop-out turned bartender. Winston is a retired semi-professional basketball player who is in between temp jobs throughout the city. Cece is a print model. Besides Schmidt, the supporting characters like Cece and Winston do not seem to have a real plan for their future, after spending most of their lives chasing their dreams.
In the loft, they have their own traditions like playing a drinking game called ‘True American’ and putting money in a jar every time one of them says something cringe-worthy. There are even times that Jess will break into an offpitch song. The roommates make driving to the airport together not only look enjoyable, but they also make you laugh while they’re doing it. It is the little moments in this show that make it the most amusing and outlandish. All of these characters are eccentric and ‘weird’ in their own unique ways, and have intertwining plotlines that make each episode funny and interesting. What they all have in common is that they’re trying to navigate through their adult lives and relationships, from careers and ‘next-steps’ to finding the person to spend the rest of their lives with and which friendships are worth their energy. It’s one of those shows that resonates deeply with some 20-to-30-year-olds, and it could possibly be a glimpse into teenager’s futures. Overall, if you’re looking for a show to make you laugh until there are tears streaming down your face, this may be the one for you. It is exactly that for me! The show aired in September of 2011 and had a great run on FOX Network until May 2018 with seven full seasons. You can find it on Netflix and Amazon Prime.

“I Can Only Imagine” movie review Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu “I Can Only Imagine” is about Bart Millard from the christian band MercyMe and the experiences he had to go through to come up with the popular song. It’s the phenomenal story of how he grew up in a troubled home life and a broken relationship with his girlfriend. His only escape from all the chaos was his music. The movie starts out with him as a little boy who grows up in a troubled home with an abusive father and his mother abandoning him. He has a lot of anger towards his mother for leaving him and towards his father for abusing him altogether accusing his father of being the reason that his mother had left them. Bart started getting into musicals in high school, which was the start of his music career. While he was doing a musical at his high school one night, his father had fallen off a bar stool and been rushed to the hospital. Bart didn’t find out about it until after the musical and he and his girlfriend rushed to the hospital. Bart’s father kept it from his son that he had been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Bart’s girlfriend tried to be of some help and be there for Bart but he just pushed her away and he took off. Bart comes back and finds out that his dad has pancreatic cancer and takes care of him until his last days.
It took his faith, God’s love, and his experiences to form the band MercyMe and forgive his father for the abuse that he got when he was a child and a teenager. With the cast of J. Michael Finley as Bart Millard, Trace Adkins, Dennis Quaid, and Cloris Leachman and directed by Andrew and Jon Erwin. The movie kept me on the edge of my seat and made me think of my background with my mother and I thought it was fabulous. The actors did a terrific job of playing the characters with their amazing passion and wanting to tell the story in a way that is as relatable as can be. This movie is used to play on people’s emotions of being sympathetic and touching the hearts of everyone across the nation.

Cassandra Keller Co-managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu No matter who you are, whether you are a super confident person, a shy person, or someone in between, everyone has dealt with self-doubt. It can be something as small as thinking your hair looks bad to something as major as thinking you can’t achieve your life goals. According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, self-doubt is “a lack of faith in oneself : a feeling of doubt or uncertainty about one’s abilities, actions, etc.” Everyone has felt uncertain of a decision in their life; it’s part of being human. That said, self-doubt isn’t always the easiest to deal with. One way to deal with self-doubt is to stop those thoughts when they first start to come to mind. Selfdoubt can quickly spin out of control and overwhelm you. By saying or thinking ‘stop,’ you disrupt the thought patterns that could lead you into that spiral. Self-doubt can easily stem from comparing yourself to others. No one is exactly like anyone else in the way they look or how they progress, so why would you compare yourself to someone else who looks differently or progresses differently than you would? Instead, compare yourself to only yourself. Look back at the way you were in the past and compare that to the way you are now or the person you want to one day be. Doing all these steps may help when dealing with self-doubt, but these methods are not a cure-all. Sometimes, you have to rely on others to help you deal with your self-doubt. Telling a friend or loved one about your self-doubt can help you to relieve your doubt and get reassurance from people important to you. Self-doubt is never fun to live with, but it isn’t impossible to live with either. Everyone is different and not everything will work for everyone. Just remember that you got this and you can get through it.

Sarah McClenaghan Staff Writer smm362@lhup.edu Since I was in high school, I have wanted to travel somewhere far from where I grew up. When someone is from Lancaster, they are surrounded with a lot of farmland, filled with Amish, their buggies, farm animals and tourism. There are many areas that are dedicated to tourism in the area and sometimes, people who live there just want to go away to get a break, grow as a person, and end up coming back different, or move away permanently. That is why so many students in high school choose colleges far away, because they want to move away and try a different environment other than Lancaster. In the past, I have heard people either love or hate the area. There is no in-between and it is always a debate for people of which side they are on. I do feel like other areas have this debate as well, such as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Reading, and more. But for me, I do love Lancaster and it will always be my home. When someone visits the area, it is nothing like other counties in PA and when someone leaves, they realize how good of a place it is to live or visit. But honestly, people like me who actually live in Lancaster want to see something other than cows, eat homemade chicken pot pie and corn, and get stuck in traffic with tourists who cannot drive every once in a while. I do love where I am from, but when it comes to traveling, I want to go somewhere completely opposite of my childhood environment. Throughout high school and college, there are many

places I have thought of visiting, especially in Europe or South America, but one of the main places I want to visit is Switzerland. It is a random place to go to, but the country is beautiful. Whenever I look up pictures, there are mountains with snow on the top, but on the bottom of the mountains, there are hills and hills of wildflowers. Someone can easily go on a hike on with their friends, or even take a walk with their dog through the hills, which is what I want to do one day. One activity I want to do in Switzerland is slide down in a roller coaster on a mountain there. The country has built-in, metal roller coasters on the side of mountains, where someone can be in an individualized cart and slide down the mountain while looking at the view. I have seen many videos of tourists who have taken roller coasters down the mountains, and it is amazing to watch. When I am watching these videos, it feels like I am there with the tourists going down the mountain. It is definitely on my bucket list, and it will be one of the first activities I will do when I get into the country. The only problem I have going to Switzerland is they have four main languages, which are German, French, Italian, and Romanian. Depending on where someone is in the country, it is different in each area. This is a problem for me because I am terrible at learning languages, and I will not know what is going on. If I do decide to go, I will most likely ask someone to come with me, so we can suffer figuring out the language together while eating tons of food. Overall, the country is extraordinary and some day, when I am not poor and not drowning in debt, I will visit and share thousands of pictures of the beautiful country.

Before starting this piece, I decided to look on the calendar in my iPhone to see if it thought that St. Patrick’s Day is a holiday. Low and behold, they have it under every single March 17. While I am sure St. Patrick’s Day is taken more seriously in Ireland, in America it is more of a day and/or weekend to dress up in green and drink. St. Patrick’s Day marks the death of Saint Patrick, who was a patron saint of Ireland. Traditionally, people are supposed to observe this holiday by going to a mass or service because it represents the remembrance of the first arrival of Christianity in Ireland. Yet, never have I ever heard of people going to church to honor St. Patrick’s Day. Ever. Even Irish families! So, I am sure that most don’t even have a clue as to what the holiday means to their country of origin or how to properly observe it because it is now so Americanized here in the States. I doubt that it could be seen any differently even if Americans wanted to change it. Therefore, no, I do not consider this a real holiday, at least how it is celebrated and observed here. I am Irish and before this, I had absolutely no clue why St. Patty’s Day was a holiday—all I knew was that there are always parties and bar
specials on and around March, and that on the 17th I should wear something green. There are even weekends that certain colleges dedicate completely to the non-holiday. Nearby, Penn State University has their annual State Patties celebration, typically the weekend before their spring break. This past weekend, Indiana University of Pennstylvania threw their IUPatties and Pennsylvania College of Technology (PCT) located in Williamsport, PA held their PCT Patties. This way of celebrating St. Patty’s that we as a society have created is fun, and I am sure that it’ll last the test of time--especially in the college world.

The red-hot rapper, Cardi B, is dealing with a resurfaced situation–she drugged and robbed men she took to hotels back when she was a stripper. She made the claim three years ago in an Instagram Live session, but someone dug up the recording a few days ago. “I had to go strip, I had to go, ‘Oh yeah, you want to … me?,’” she hollers in the video, “‘Yeah, yeah, yeah, let’s go back to this hotel.’ and I drugged men up, and I robbed them. That’s what I used to do.” Cardi B was trying to explain that she deserved and earned her success and “nothing was… handed to me.” The video earned her a load of criticism on social media, including the R.Kelly-invoking hashtag #SurvivingCardiB. The Bill Cosby situation was even mentioned, saying she’d be in prison if she was a man. At first, Cardi went off social media for a short break, but then she went on the offense Tuesday, explaining what she had said back
then, what she meant and what she could do now about it. “I talked about things I had to do in my past right or wrong that I felt I needed to do to make a living,” she stated in an Instagram post. “I never claim to be perfect or some from a perfect world wit a perfect past I always speak my truth I always own my past.” The culture she comes from — hip-hop — allows people to talk honestly about where they came from and the bad things they had to do, Cardi said, but she noted she does not include those parts of her past in her music. “There are rappers that glorify murder violence drugs an robbing. Crimes they felt they had to do to survive. I never even put those things in my music because I’m not proud of it and feel a responsibility not to glorify it,” she posted on Instagram. “The men I spoke about in my live were men that I dated that I was involve with men that were conscious and willing and aware,” she
added, “whether or not they were poor choices at the time I did what I had to do to survive.” She said in the caption of the post that all she can do now is be a better woman for herself, family, and her future.

The Half-decade retrospective: Milwaukee Bucks Nicholas Hornig

When looking at the Milwaukee Bucks, it would be a safe assumption that they are one of the best teams in the league when it comes to scouting and drafting players. After all, the team is a powerhouse in the eastern conference and is home to one of the best young players in the league in Giannis Antetokounmpo. After taking a deeper look, however, it can be said that with confidence that Milwaukee is perhaps the most inconsistent drafting team in the league. While the team has had more than one successful pick in the draft, they have also had many who have busts or simply haven’t liven up to their full potential. As a huge fan of the game who is very intrigued by the powerhouse, lets take a look at how this team manages to be successful despite a rather disappointing drafting past. There are many teams that have had way worse luck then Milwaukee, but it is still a shock to see the success the team has given their many draft night mistakes. Jabari Parker is a good example of this, given the fact that he had as much potential coming out of college as anyone. Being a prodigy out of Duke, it would’ve been safe to assume that Milwaukee drafted Parker to be the face of the franchise when they drafted him with the second overall pick in 2014. During his tenure in Milwaukee, he was anything but that. Parker has not only been prone to injury, but was also a a liability at times for the teams in terms of production. Even though the Bucks and Jabari Parker has parted ways recently, it is still sad knowing what could of been for the former versatile forward.
More failing efforts of Milwaukee on draft night can be seen through Thon Maker and D.J. Wilson. Both players were big men that had tons of potential coming into the NBA but have both yet to find their peak. Thon Maker is a larger than life center, measuring in at over 7 feet tall. However, his size simply didn’t live up to Milwaukee’s standards as he was traded to Detroit earlier this season. While Wilson still has potential to live up to the first round selection, him and Maker both provide cases to prove that the Bucks are mediocre when it comes to drafting players. Despite these flaws, Milwaukee is still a top dog in the eastern conference, and it seems like that won’t change for a long time. Giannis Antetokounmpo is an absolute beast who terrorizes defenders with his height, reach, and strength. The 6 foot 11 inch forward is a force to be reckoned with in the pain and also has the ball handling ability to compete with most point guards. In addition to Giannis, the team also had the intelligence to draft Malcom Brogdon the same year as Thon Maker in 2016. Even though Maker was a bust for the franchise, Brogdon serves as a young leader for the team who rarely misses foul shots and was even voted rookie of the year for the 2016-2017 season. Even though their drafting hasn’t been perfect, Brogdon serves as a beacon of hope for a team who looks to be contenders for NBA championships for years to come.

Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Wade Laudeman of the Lock Haven University men’s outdoor track & field team has been named this week’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Men’s Field Athlete of the Week. Laudeman was rewarded for his monster javelin throw in the 2019 outdoor season opener. He opened the season with a throw of 214-01.00 back on March 15 at the 2019 Alan Connie Shamrock Invite in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. The throw was a 15-foot personal-best and marked an NCAA Division II provisional championship qualifying mark. To date, it’s the best mark in the PSAC by over 15 feet and its ranks No. 2 in the Atlantic Region. It’s currently sits No. 5 on the DII national list. At the time, it was good enough for third at the meet and it is the fourth-best mark in LHU history.
Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Senior pitcher Bekah Slattery has been named this week’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division Pitcher of the Week by the conference office. It is the second straight week that Slattery has won the award and the third overall for the team already this season. Slattery was once again magnificent for LHU this week. Overall, she threw nine total innings on the week, allowing just four hits over those nine innings while striking out 14. Her week was highlighted by a bigtime 4-1 win over Millersville. In that game, Slattery pitched all seven innings as she finished with a complete-game two-hitter. She struck out 12 batters in the matchup while walking only one as she completely shut down the Marauders.

rjb7979@lockhaven.edu SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – Big days at the plate from Casey Carpenter (Spring Brook, Pa./North Pocono) and Becca Caputo (Williamsport, Pa./Jersey Shore) as well as another stellar outing in the circle from Bekah Slattery (Douglasville, Pa./Daniel Boone) helped power the Lock Haven University softball team (11-9) to a sweep of Slippery Rock (8-13) Tuesday afternoon in Slippery Rock. LHU took game one, 2-0 before taking game two, 7-5. Game 1: W, 2-0 The Bald Eagles knocked off The Rock, 2-0 in the first game of the doubleheader. Carpenter started the scoring early for Lock Haven, sending a double to deep left field that scored Caputo and gave LHU the 1-0 lead in the first inning. Slattery helped her own cause in the fourth inning when she drilled a double to left field to score Madison Mathes (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) and give the Bald Eagles a 2-0 lead. That was all of the scoring LHU needed to do. Slattery was outstanding on the mound Tuesday, pitching a twohit shutout while striking out 14 batters in the game. She walked no batters and allowed only one Slippery Rock player to tally a hit as she completely dominated the game from the start. Caputo and Carpenter led the offense for LHU. Caputo finished the game 3-4 at the plate with two doubles and a run scored while Carpenter went 2-3 in the game with a double and an RBI. Slattery finished with a double and an RBI while Mathes finished with a double and a run scored. Game 2: W, 7-5 LHU took game two by a final score of 7-5 to sweep the doubleheader over SRU. Casey Carpenter was the story of the game for LHU in this one as her offense powered Lock Haven to the win. Leading 1-0 in the first inning, Carpenter drilled a two-run double to left field that put the Bald Eagles ahead 3-0. In the fifth, Carpenter extended the LHU lead to 5-1 when she
belted a two-run home run over the left center fence. Lock Haven was then able to take advantage of a Slippery Rock error to extend the lead to 7-1. Slippery Rock was able to cut the lead to 7-5, but Slattery relieved Kayla Gee (Williamsport, Pa./Loyalsock) and shut the door on SRU to grab the 7-5 win. Carpenter finished the game 2-4 with a double, home run and four RBI’s as she powered LHU to victory. Caputo and Mathes both finished 2-4 as well with Caputo adding two runs scored and an RBI while Mathes also scored a run. Chloe Kennedy (Elkton, Md./Caravel Academy) added a double while Amanda Criss (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) added a single and a RBI. Gee pitched well for LHU, giving up six hits over 5.2 innings of work while striking out eight. Up Next: The Bald Eagles will return to Lawrence Field for the team’s next game when they host Pitt-Johnstown in their Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division opener. The doubleheader is scheduled for Friday, March 29 with the first pitch set for 2:30.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – For the second straight season, Lock Haven University wrestler Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs) led all NCAA Division I wrestlers in tech falls. The redshirt-junior racked up 15 this past season. Shoop capped an all-around sensational 2018-19 season with a spot on the podium at the 2019 NCAA Championships. The No. 13 seed finished seventh overall at 141 pounds and earned All-American status for the first time in his career. Shoop was given his award after the national tournament ended Saturday night. It was his third straight trip to the NCAA Championships. Shoop quickly became a crowd favorite in PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh, the host venue of the 2019 national tournament, as college wrestling fans got to witness firsthand what Mat-Town U.S.A. already knew, and that is, Shoop is dangerous in the top position. His tough rides and tilts helped rack up two major decisions at the NCAA Championships on the way to a 4-2 record and seventh-place finish. Last season, Shoop recorded 15 techs as well. He will enter his senior season with 40 techs, which is already a career school record. Shoop was one of two LHU All-Americans in Pittsburgh, as he was joined by Chance Marsteller. Marsteller finished third at 165. The All-American duo helped show the world that the rise of LHU wrestling is for real and continues. Lock Haven finished 18th overall in the team standings. The 18th place finish topped Big Ten schools Wisconsin, Northwestern, Illinois, Maryland, Purdue, Michigan State and Indiana. The Bald Eagles also beat North Carolina, Virginia, Duke, Pittsburgh, Oklahoma, West Virginia, Army, Navy and local-rival Bucknell.
