Calling all students, faculty and staff to join the PA Promise Rally Cassandra Keller Co-Managing Editor

cmk2356@lockhaven.edu The Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties (APSCUF) is calling LHU students, faculty and coaches to join the PA Promise rally in Harrisburg coming Wednesday, Mar. 27.

PA Promise is a set of bills presented by Sen. Vincent J. Hughes and Rep. James Roebuck back in 2018. The bills have been brought back into legislation for the 2019-20 session.

According to the PA Promise website, “It[the PA promise]

advocates for more affordable access to post-secondary education in Pennsylvania, which has suffered decades of disinvestment.” In summary, if the bills are to be passed as laws, they would help to make college more affordable and accessible to students who wouldn’t be able to attend college otherwise.

Free transportation will be provided for students, faculty, and coaches who reserve a seat. Transportation will depart at 8 a.m. Mar. 27 from Campus Drive. To reserve a seat, contact Dr. Rick Goulet at 570-484-2646 or at rgoulet@lockhaven.edu.

This movie will you give you so many chilling and exciting scenes that will make you want to embrace your full potential of being a powerful, independent woman.

Any film, song, or book that involves a woman taking charge in her life, professional or personal wise, is a calling to the rest of the world saying, “let’s stand up together and be awesome like we’ve always been and never lose or give up that power again!”

This is an awesome origin and build up story of a superhuman woman who is in the middle of protecting her home planet from intruders and battles with her own subconscious as she keeps having reoccurring memories of a life in the military helping even more

people than she currently is as an intergalactic warrior.

Marvel really knew how to make women feel special by putting someone as extraordinary and honestly relatable as Captain Marvel in a film and casting someone like Brie Larson to step into an outstanding role was an excellent choice.

Larson has always been in movies that don’t really show her in the limelight; she’s plays more of supportive characters who helps the main characters figure their issues in a lot of different ways, but you could always tell what kind of style she has.

She’s always had this vibe of being a kicking butts and taking names kind of woman who has strong opinions on everything around her. Her debut in this movie gives her an amazing experience and a more important role in a movie that she truly deserves.

Then, when you add Samuel L. Jackson into the mix of putting on an amazing performance in one of Marvel’s superhero movies, it feels like

you really belong. He was there when every one of the Avengers were assembled and it only makes it right that he helps her through this.

“Captain Marvel” overall really shoots you up into the stars and blows your mind on how much female empowerment and having representation of being welcomed into organizations like S.H.E.I.L.D and the Avengers, who are very male-dominated, and have both genders actually work together effectively as a unit like we’ve seen multiple times before with the fabulous Black Widow and the lovely fighting ladies of “Black Panther”.

It’s really refreshing for the spotlight to be all on the female superheroes for once.

You can have your own adventurous experience now while “Captain Marvel” is still in theaters and eventually see her again when she helps take back the human race from Thanos and his destruction in the new Avengers movie premiering this April.

“I’m Not Ashamed” movie review Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu “I’m Not Ashamed” is about the story of Rachel Joy Scott and the millions of lives that she touched before the shooting at Colombine High School on April 20, 1999. The movie is based off of a true story and shows how hard it can be to be a devout christian in high school how hard it is to not be ashamed of your faith in God. Rachel Joy Scott was a fallen christian but rededicated her life back to God and strengthened her faith with God with the help of her friends and family. The message that the movie gives is to show compassion and love to everyone around you because it could make a difference in someone’s life.

The movie stars Masey Mclain, Sadie Robertson, Korie Robertson, and Ben Davies and directed by Brian Baugh. It came out October 21, 2016.

The movie starts out with the live footage of the shooting at Colombine High School and moves into Rachel Joy Scott and her childhood experience, which was very troublesome with her father leaving and her mother remarrying and goes into her high school experience as a freshman and getting into trouble with alcohol.

Her mother sends her to her aunt’s house to work around on the farm and her aunt and her cousin take her to church and Rachel rededicates her life and asks for forgive-

ness for her sins. When school starts again, she’s a new person.

She gets into a relationship that starts out nice, but after he learns that she’s a christian, it becomes very toxic. She meets a boy on the streets and she is very compassionate to him and they become very close.

She tries to be very understanding and persuasive to the bullies in school, but it doesn’t work and two of them were responsible for the shooting at Colombine.

The movie was very intense and kept me on the edge of my seat. The actors did an amazing job of playing the characters.

I could really feel what was going on and could imagine it happening.

Something like this happening in our world is very upsetting and troubling to anyone child who goes to school which can kind of make the movie a bit much to the public view, but it also raises awareness about this horrible day.

Awareness that helps society determine what to do with their kids, the weapons being used out in the world, and makes us reflect on life. This is a tragic story, but the movie purposizes it for the bettering of our futures.

Sexual health is an integral part of health, well-being and quality of life as a whole. To preserve an active and satisfying sex life, here are some little tips.

- Begin by getting an STD test STD testing is one of the easiest ways to find out about your body’s health. I know that the thought of getting an STD test sounds a little frightening but there is nothing to be worried about. Making sure you are both in good standing when it comes to your health is very important, being honest with each other about these kind of things creates trust that all relationships need.

-Don’t lie to your doctor Having a happy sex life is only possible if you take your annual trips to the doctor’s office. The helpful folks at your doctors office or clinic are there to help you maintain your health, but not telling them what’s really going on is not helpful to you or them. They need to know if you are sexually active and how many partners you’ve had since they last saw you so that you can get back out there and be as active as you want. Skipping the doctor’s office or not telling the truth is a big no-no, and no one wants someone who lies about their sexual health.

-Talk to your partner Create a open line of communication between you and your partner.

You and your partner need to be honest with each other about you who might be sleeping with. Choose the proper place, talk to your partner about his or her tastes and preferences in love, as well as yours. In all cases, you should feel free to try new things and you should feel respected. Don’t do something just to please your partner if it makes you feel uncomfortable.

-Eat healthy.

Sexuality is a reflection of one’s general state of health. To have an active sex life, take care of your nutrition. Healthy food nourishes your body and allows it to be at its best in many situations, including sex.

Plus, a healthy nutrition (low in sodium and bad fats, for example) will help you fight certain illnesses like arterial hypertension and hypercholesterolemia, which can be associated with erectile dysfunction, affecting one out of every two men after 40 years old.

- Just have fun No matter if you’re sexually active or not, when having sex or just experimenting, you should always have fun in a safe way. John Mayer said it best: Your Body is a Wonderland, so go explore. Take your pleasure seriously, always take precaution when it comes to your health and your pleasure. Find out what your body likes and play around with that, as humans were always learning different things. Take the time to learn about what turns you on and makes you all excited inside.

Ways you can manage your asthma Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu Asthma is a disorder where a person’s airways become inflamed, narrow and swell and makes extra mucus and makes it hard to breath. It can range from a mild case to a severe life-threatening attack. It can be diagnosed at any age. It causes having trouble breathing, chest pain, cough and wheezing. There are more than 3 million U.S. cases per year of asthma and is very common. It requires a medical diagnosis, is treatable by a medical professional, and lab tests or imaging is often required. It’s a chronic disorder, which means it can last for years or be life-long. In some cases, even bronchitis can be diagnosed as well but only a mild case of it. Asthma can get better or worse over time, depending on how well it’s treated and managed.

Lots of things can trigger an asthma attack. It could be exercise, anxiety, acid reflux, allergies, pets, mold, dust mites, or cigarette smoke. It could even be the common cold, bad weather such as thunderstorms, high humidity, or a winter storm, and fragrances such as hair spray and perfume. Emotions can even trigger an asthma attack.

For the symptoms of asthma, the cough can happen at night, during exercise, can be chronic, dry, with phlegm, mild or severe. The respiratory can involve difficulty breathing, wheezing, breathing through the mouth, fast breathing, frequent respiratory infections or shortness of breath at night. Chest pressure, flare, anxiety, early awakening, fast heart rate, and throat irritation are also common with asthma.

Asthma can be easily treated with a rescue inhaler to treat symptoms and a controller inhaler that prevents the symptoms. A more severe case may require a longer-acting inhaler that keeps the airways open. There can be some specialists such as a Pulmonologist, a Pediatrician for younger kids, a primary care provider, or a Respiratory Therapist.

I started showing signs of asthma at age 13 ,when I started wheezing in the cold weather after me and my mother walked out of the theater after seeing a movie at the theater and were waiting for my dad to pick us up. I was diagnosed with asthma when I was 17 years old. I remember having a respiratory infection when I was a freshman in high school. I have used an inhaler and since I was diagnosed with asthma, there’s never been a day where I didn’t have my inhaler. Some days my asthma is getting better and other days it becomes a problem. Personally, my asthma is stress, exercise, and bad weather induced.

What was your worst date ever?

Tiana Gair Copy Editor teg5895@lockhaven.edu My worst date ever—and trust me, there have been plenty of bad ones—had to be towards the end of last semester. It all started in late August; I was a first semester-sophomore and classes had just started. I had decided to take a literature class that only revolved around Shakespeare, and it was obvious that first day that I didn’t belong amongst those senior English majors, but I wasn’t just the only one.

The boy this story is based off of walked in to our very first class five minutes late. He immediately sat next to me, so I introduced myself, but we didn’t talk for the rest of the class. When class ended, he left quickly but it turns out he was waiting for me outside the door with a small folded piece of paper, which he placed in my hand and walked away. On it was his number.

Call me cheesy, but I am an incurable romantic and it made me smile.

Even so, I wasn’t looking for a hook-up situation which is what I had found that nearly every single college guy wanted. So I never texted him. However, he consistently complimented me and told me he’d do anything for a date, among a bunch of other things. He honestly had great pickup lines that could have worked if I wasn’t me.

He added me on Snapchat and tried to talk all the time (but I still didn’t give him my number). Truly I felt like I was being pursued big-time. Time passed like this until finals week rolled around and he

finally asked me on a date.

Getting asked to hang out somewhere public in college is kind of a big deal, if you know what I mean. Still, I half-expected what happened next. We were in the middle of a three hour nonstop conversation about our everything in our lives when he casually mentioned his girlfriend as if A.) I’m supposed to know he has one, and B.) we’d still be on this date if I had known prior to that moment.

I laughed in his face. Was he serious?! The look on his face told me that yes, in fact, he was. I took the opportunity to make him feel bad, make sure he knew that I couldn’t care less and we could still be ‘cool.’

In retrospect, the guy’s unwillingness to let me follow any of his social media (besides Snapchat) should have been the very first red-flag. His original excuse was that he ‘didn’t use it,’ but I didn’t want to look crazy for saying that I didn’t believe a single thing that came out of his mouth.

My advice to any and every person in college looking to date is to trust your gut.

To me, the whole situation was hilarious. I curved him for months on end and the second I had a thought about changing that, it was shown to me that I should have never stopped. Overall, it was a learning experience, one I can look back on and laugh at with friends.

Legalize it, Pennsylvania Tess English

Online Editor tae7002@lockhaven.edu It’s been decades since the “War on Drugs” began, and while the campaign created useful reformations in prevention, it’s time to end the war on one specific drug: marijuana.

Marijuana was made illegal in 1937 by Franklin D. Roosevelt when he passed Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 in what was branded as an attempt to control or limit the use of cannabis. However the readings of this law require consumers to buy a stamp tax of where and how much of what they bought of their resources, which ended to be self-incriminating.

What does this mean and why is relevant now? Simple, the ban on marijuana was quite frankly rigged against the people who used it. The main reason for the ban was that it was supposed to be harmful to users, but there was pushback from the American Medical Association (AMA) at the time due to the medical benefits of the drug. The bill was passed in spite of this.

Current research suggests that marijuana or cannabis has many helpful effects to various medical problems. For instance a medical card can treat these things under the California Medical Law: AIDS, anorexia, cancer, chronic pain, migraines, persistent muscle spasms, seizures, and severe nausea.

In fact, little evidence supports that marijuana has no long term severe medical issues according to an article Lester Grinspoon wrote called “Puffing is the Best Medicine,” in the Los Angeles Times.

So if there is little evidence to support why the initial ban and the bans to follow are passed, why does our Commonwealth continue to criminalize a harmless drug?

It is time to let go of these outdated notions of marijuana, because they get innocent people in trouble for doing harmless acts that do not truly involve others, unless you consider the distribution.

According to drugpolicy.org, 659,700 people were arrested for possession alone in the year 2017. Over half of a million people now have a criminal record because of marijuana. Depending on state laws, quantity of drug, and a few other factors, that is something that could follow a person around for the rest of his or her life. It hardly seems appropriate when marijuana has no severe long term effects, especially when considering how detrimental smoking tobacco and tobacco products can be for health.

So now is the time to let go, and Gov. Tom Wolf seems to agree. He tweeted out, “More and more states are successfully implementing marijuana legalization, and we need to keep learning from their efforts. Any change would take legislation. But I think it is time for Pennsylvania to take a serious and honest look at recreational marijuana.”

Convicted felon reinstated Chase Bottorf

Staff Writer ctb492@lockhaven.edu Back in 2004, professor Charles Morgan got hired at Lock Haven University. Getting hired in the mathematics department, Morgan worked with LHU as math professor from 2004 to 2016. Morgan was promoted to a full professor in 2009 due to his well-liked status and his highly-regarded teaching performance. Despite Morgan being a well-respected addition to LHU, a criminal past would be uncovered.

In 1989, Morgan was charged with two counts of sodomy and a count of sexual assault. He was 19 at the time. Morgan was reported to have performed oral sex on an 8-year-old boy and performed an unspecified sex act on another minor.

Morgan was convicted in 1990. Despite the type of molestation charges, he would only serve up to 5 years. His sentence was reduced after volunteering in a sex offender therapy program.

When applying for his position at LHU, Morgan left out that he had been a convicted felon on his application. At the time of Morgan’s hiring, LHU didn’t have its current background check requirement. It wouldn’t be until 2016 that LHU would start conducting background checks due to the number of minors from high school who enroll in campus courses. Morgan, like the rest of the faculty, had to go through a background check, where in the end, his criminal history came to light. He was placed on paid suspension by then President Michael Fiorentino. Morgan pleaded that he hadn’t done any crimes since his conviction in 1990. A binding arbitration was started by the faculty union to secure his reinstatement into LHU. Since Morgan’s criminal acts haven’t followed him into middle-age, he can freely be reinstated by law.

Morgan resumed his position as a math professor at Lock Haven University in the fall due to court order. Somebody who has been convicted of child molestation should not be able to retake their job that they were fired from to begin with. First of all, while Morgan didn’t lie, he wasn’t forthcoming about his past on his application. The luck of him getting past a system that lacked a thorough background check is the only reason he got in and began teaching.

According to pennlive.com, Lock Haven appealed the court’s order to re-instate Morgan, to no avail. However, the

University has suspended Morgan’s contact with minors.

Morgan isn’t allowed to teach high school studentss, typically enrolled in advanced placement college courses. If a case where somebody is barred from teaching secondary students, they shouldn’t be allowed to take positions that are higher on the totem pole. It is unfair for any professor trying to get a job, or the ones already working there, with no discernable felony convictions. It is offensive to those professors working.

With the history of Morgan’s conviction being revealed, a good portion of students would most likely stay away from taking any classes that he would teach. Things could even get worse with students causing harmful altercations with him, if it were to get that severe.

Last fall, LHU encouraged faculty to send parents and students with questions regarding Morgan to campus administrators. The news of this reinstatement should have also been sent to students. With more and more people being aware of this unprecedented event, the reinstatement could be turned away. It would also make a bad image for the school to rehire somebody with child molestation convictions, despite his good history with LHU. It is up to the faculty of LHU and its students to either fight against the reinstatement of Morgan or let him freely work with a full wage.

Athletes of the week Jimmy Webb

Baseball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Jimmy Webb was on fire for the Bald Eagles in their four games against Winston-Salem State. Webb was a stellar .571 from the plate with eight hits and walked three times for a .647 on-base percentage.

On Sunday, Webb was crucial in The Haven’s two wins. In the 8-3 game one, he was 3-4 with a double and walked once. Webb scored three runs and recorded a stolen base. In game two, Webb was tremendous again going 2-3 and adding another walk. Webb would homer in The Haven’s critical sixth inning comeback to push the lead to 7-5, which LHU would hold onto for their second win.

Bekah Slattery

Softball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dspatafo@lockhaven.edu Bekah Slattery of the Lock Haven softball team had an outstanding week down at the PFX Tournament. For the week, Slattery made six appearances (five starts) in the team’s 10 games, going 4-1 with five complete games while posting a 1.88 ERA. She finished the week with 52 strikeouts compared to six walks while allowing just 10 earned runs over 37.1 innings pitched.

She allowed opponents to hit just .173 against her when she was in the circle.

Her week was highlighted by wins over Hillsdale and Sioux Falls.

In the game against Hillsdale, the 4-3 LHU win in eight innings, Slattery pitched all eight innings while allowing just four hits and striking out 12 for the contest.

In the 3-0 win over Sioux Falls, Slattery pitched a complete-game shut out for LHU. She finished the game allowing just four hits with 12 strikeouts while allowing just one extra-base hit.

Baseball falls to UPJ high scoring affair Ryan Bogaczyk Graduate Assistant

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University baseball team (6-7-1) pounded out 13 hits, but it wasn’t quite enough as the Bald Eagles fell on the road to Pitt-Johnstown (12-6), 13-8 Tuesday afternoon in Johnstown.

Trailing 8-2 entering the sixth inning, LHU was able to put four runs on the board in the top of the sixth to cut the Mountain Cat lead to just 8-6 as The Haven used some timely hitting to climb back into the game.

Lock Haven then cut the deficit to 8-7 in the seventh inning, but that was the closest the team was able to get as LHU fell to UPJ 13-8 in the high scoring affair.

Six different Bald Eagles recorded multi-hit games as Jimmy Webb (Montoursville, Pa/Loyalsock), Max Joseph (Marlton, N.J./Harford CC), Isaac Porter (Beech Creek, Pa./St. Bonaventure), Pedro Peguero (Hershey, Pa./Mercyhurst), John Banes (Springfield, Pa./Cumberland CC) and Demetruis Haskins (Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) all tallied two hits on the day.

Haskins and Porter both finished with two RBI’s in the contest while Porter also added a home run on the day. Joseph added a triple, an RBI and a run scored while Banes, Haskins and Peguero all scored a run apiece.

Next Up: Lock Haven will host East Stroudsburg on Friday, March 22 in a doubleheader for the 2019 home opener with the first game starting at 1 p.m.

Lacrosse drops nail-biter at Slippery Rock Adam Kaylor Graduate Assistant

ank4635@lockhaven.edu SLIPPERY ROCK, Pa. – The Lock Haven University lacrosse team (2-4, 0-1 PSAC) fell just short against Slippery Rock University (2-3, 1-1 PSAC), 14-13, in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener for the Bald Eagles.

The conference opener for The Haven proved hotly contested and neither team was able to stretch a lead higher than three goals for the entire game. From the opening whistle, the fireworks began as each team grabbed a goal in the first three minutes of the game. The flow would continue the entire 60 minutes and the Bald Eagles took a slight 7-5 lead into the half.

In the second half, Slippery Rock battled back to tie the game at 11 with 13 minutes to play. What followed was a fascinating finish with both teams trading crucial goals. In the final two minutes, however, The Rock would get the game-winning goal and was able to see out the remaining time.

Caitlin Morrow (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) dominated the attacking zone for Lock Haven netting a game high five goals and dishing out two assists. Three other Bald Eagles scored twice: Braxtin Reddinger (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford), Zoe Waddell (Catonsville, Md./Catonsville) and Kate Hooper (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary Anglican Girls School) all found the net twice on the day.

Loren Librizzi (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) was strong once again leading all players with three assists and added one goal. Goalkeeper Lauren Girardi (Watertown, N.Y./Watertown) made save after save to keep the game close and racked up 18 saves and a .563 save percentage as Slippery Rock totaled 46 shots in the game.

Next Up: The Bald Eagles return home and host Gannon on Saturday, March 23 at 1 p.m.

INDIANAPOLIS – This evening (Wednesday, March 13) the NCAA released the brackets with pre-tournament seeds for the 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships and the six NCAA tournament bound Lock Haven University wrestlers learned who their first round opponents will be.

The 2019 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships are set for Thursday to Saturday, March 21-23 at PPG Paints Arena in Pittsburgh.

DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren), Kyle Shoop (Boiling Springs, Pa./Boiling Springs), Alex Klucker (Summerdale, Pa./East Pennsboro), Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./ Kennard-Dale), Corey Hazel (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley) and Thomas Haines (Quarryville, Pa./Solanco) are all headed to Pittsburgh for the 2019 Championships.

All six qualified by way of their 2019 Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) individual titles. Fehlman (133), Klucker (157), Marsteller (165) and Hazel (184) are now all two-time NCAA qualifiers. Both Shoop (141) and Haines (285) are now three-time NCAA qualifiers.
