Why maps matter: Gerrymandering in PA Mark Matthews Sports Editor mjm2923@lockhaven.edu Carol Kuniholm, chair of the Fair Districts PA organization, presented at the Hall of Flags on Feb. 25. The Fair District PA is a non-partisan, volunteer-led statewide coalition working to create a process for redistricting that is transparent, impartial and fair. It was founded in January 2016. During the presentation, Kuniholm explained that gerrymandering is a practice intended to establish an unfair political advantage for a political party or group by manipulating district boundaries. Kuniholm said, “It’s not about parties. It’s about people, principle, policies, and power.” She said, “Gerrymandering is the key to corruption and control.” Kuniholm informed the audience the effects of gerrymandering. She said, “Gerrymandering is used to determine elections. This is in result of political leaders drawing district lines to decide elections before a vote is cast.” An example Kuniholm used was the term “cracking.” Cracking reduces the power of a certain party by splitting the population where it results in members being spread to several districts where they become an irrelevant minority. There is a shortage of fairness in the result of gerrymandering where a certain party is at a disadvantage for voting, because of the placing of the maps in the state. She also went in-depth of other problems in Pennsylvania. She said “Pennsylvania has the highest inequality in funding.18 cities in Pennsylvania have more lead exposure than Flint, Michigan.” That is an eye opener for our state, because Flint, Michigan has been struggling with a public health crisis with water since 2014. Kuniholm noted that the difference between Flint, Michigan and Pennsylvania, however, is that the lead is exposed in the air, not just water. There is a lack of awareness for this lead hazard in Pennsylvania. 25 bills addressing the lead exposure has been introduced in the PA legislation, but none were passed. Only 30 percent of children in PA have been tested by lead. For the sake of our safety, there needs to be more awareness for our state in regards to these issues. That is why some Pennsylvania citizens are looking to reform the redistricting process. Redistricting is the process of dividing an area into new political or school districts. Pennsylvania citizens are spreading awareness by participating in the Rally to End Gerrymandering on March 23 at Harrisburg. Any citizen in the public are welcomed to participate in the rally. Kuniholm said “Last year’s rally was the largest attended since 2008 and she expects it to be even larger this year.”

Poetry corner: existential crisis
Tess English Online Manager tae7002@lockhaven.edu
“Who are you?” It was a simple and straightforward question, but still it sent me spinning. Up until this, I just was. No description needed. I acted upon the world, and it acted upon me. We danced this dance in a cycle without thought. Until we asked ourselves why dance? This didn’t stop the motions. Our minds raced. We should’ve stopped, however that was impossible. Existence was inevitable. I could not stop the world from turning, and the world couldn’t stop me from being. This is the nature of the beast. In the time the answer is found, the answer has changed. While you were thinking: Something acted upon you; you are now different because of it. You have responded to the difference; you’ve changed. While you were busy pinning your old self down, you transformed. The cycle starts again, like clockwork. You dance the dance, think your thoughts, and spend your time trying to force the two multiplicities to align; two realities that will never coexist.

“Courageous” movie review
Krissy Turner Lifestyles Editor kat5346@lockhaven.edu “Courageous” is about four police officers who struggle with their faith and their roles as husbands and fathers after a tragedy strikes and they make a decision that changes all of their lives. This movie came out Sept. 30, 2011, with the cast of Alex Kendrick, Ken Bevel, Kevin Downes, Ben Davies, and Robert Amaya. It was also directed by Alex Kendrick. I thought the actors did a fantastic job of playing the characters because they really threw emotion into their characters. They gave an ecstatic representation of what it means to be a good father and a good husband. They also how well they raised their kids on faith. Alex Kendrick is known for projects such as “Overcomer,” “Facing the Giants” and “Flywheel.” He and his brother co-write and produce all of the movies from Sherwood Pictures. He directs a lot of Christian movies and has even starred in a few of them. Ken Bevel is known for being in the movie “Fireproof.” He is the senior associate pastor at Sherwood Church and is retired from the United States Ma-
rine Corps. Kevin Downes is known for projects such as “I Can Only Imagine,” “Mom’s Night Out” and “Silver Bells.” Ben Davies is known for projects such as “Overcomer,” “I’m Not Ashamed,” “War Room,” and “New Hope.” Robert Amaya is known for projects such as “Altar Egos,” “God’s Compass,” “Mom’s Night Out,” and “October Baby.” I loved how some of the kids of a couple of the actors were involved in the movie. For example, Alex’s one son was in this movie and he had another one in the movie “Overcomer.” I first saw this movie with my dad when my church back home was showing it. We both loved it. My dad actually cried at the sad parts of the movie but I managed to hold my emotions together. My dad and I love watching Christian movies together because it brings us closer together as father and daughter. It is how we bond. He loved how the movie explained what being a good father meant as well as being a good husband.

Midterm tips
Kristin Turner Lifestyles Editor kat5346@lockhaven.edu We all get stressed over midterms. Who doesn’t? Here are some tips for when midterms come around. 1. Take a break when you’re studying for midterms because even your brain needs a break! It can be overwhelming to try to cram all of the information you’re studying for in one sitting! 2. Listen to music while you study. Studies have shown that listening to music while you work or study makes you more productive. It could also put you in a good mood! 3. Get a good night’s rest. It will make your mind sharper for your midterms. 4. Eat breakfast. It will give you energy and keep you focused not only on your midterms but also when you are studying. 5. Take your time when you are studying and when you are taking your midterms. Make sure you answer every question and check over everything after you are done with your midterm. 6. Review what you learned in class and make sure you understand what the concepts were. It will help you remember for the midterm. 7. Make flash cards for important vocabulary words. It will help you remember those words and what they mean for the midterm!
8. If you do not understand something, go to tutoring, work with a friend, or ask your professor for help. That is what the professor and the tutors are for and a friend would be happy to help! 9. Regulate your time for studying because as important as it is to get a good grade on your midterms, you need to make time for a break as well. 10. Look at past exams to know how it will be set up and then you know how to set up a practice exam. 11. Stay organized because it will help avoid the hassle of trying to find class notes from a long time ago. 12. Start a study group. It helps when you can gather a few of your friends that are in the same class and can study together because you can help each other become prepared for your midterm. 13. Make studying fun. It helps you remember the material if you can create fun ways to remember the material. 14. Ask your professor what is going to be on the midterm because that will help you understand what to study and what you do not need to study. 15. Exercise because twenty minutes of cardio everyday helps improve memory. 16. Build on what you already know because then you can study what is more difficult.

Aries Mar. 21- Apr. 19 You’re finally setting in motion some longstanding goals of yours, Aries. Good for you! But even though everything is in place and you’re ready to go, it’s possible that you’ll receive notice today of some delay in your plans. The frustration feels unbearable. But when you step back and look at the bigger picture, you’ll see that ultimately this delay is in your best interests. Taurus Apr. 20- May 20 Beware lawyers, bankers, and stockbrokers today, Taurus. One of them is likely to try and mislead you with some inaccurate information. While it might be in his or her best interests for you to take this information at face value, it certainly isn’t in yours! Do your own research and get all the facts before making the financial investments recommended to you. Gemini May 21- Jun. 20 A family member or other loved one may not be telling you the truth. In this person’s defense, he or she likely thinks they’re protecting you by shielding you from the truth. This is a time for you to trust your instincts, Gemini. If you’re told something that simply doesn’t ring true, check the information yourself rather than accept it at face value. Cancer Jun. 21- Jul. 22 You have an active mind and an even more active imagination, Cancer. Today you risk short-circuiting your brain as you struggle to keep up with all the ideas and information swirling inside your head. Take a few minutes to do a mental inventory. Write down everything you’re thinking right now so you can free some space in your brain for other issues. A long walk or jog would help soothe your mind. Leo Jul. 23- Aug. 22 If a family member is in a bad mood but not confessing why, it’s up to you to step in and help. He or she is carrying that big black cloud around, casting shadows everywhere they go. Do what you can to snap your relative out of it, although take care not to force the issue too harshly. Counseling might be in order, and this may not be your area of expertise! Virgo Aug. 23- Sept. 22 If a friend or colleague seems to be in trouble, you may not want to interfere for fear of being too intimate. But this isn’t a time to hold back, Virgo. It’s likely that this person really does need your help. Your intervention will be much appreciated and possibly even rewarded. Be sure to get some rest tonight. You’re emotionally and physically drained.
Lifestyles
Libra Sept. 23- Oct. 22 Your career may be sidetracked by petty gossip, rumor, and office politics. It’s likely that someone is pushing forward his or her agenda without any thought or concern for its impact on others. Do what you can to put a stop to such shenanigans, Libra. There are times when it’s appropriate to be the whistleblower, and this is one of them. Scorpio Oct. 23- Nov. 21 Some bad news about your financial situation may not really be as bad as it first appears. Even so, it throws you for a loop. Doublecheck the information before spiraling into a panic, Scorpio. It may be that a computer made an error or a bank clerk messed up. You may have to unravel some paperwork, but it will be a relief to have it resolved. Sagittarius Nov. 22- Dec. 21 In an unpleasant situation, your inclination is to protect your loved ones from the truth. This would be a mistake, Sagittarius. Even though you’re acting out of love, your family members deserve to know the truth even if it hurts. You can’t shield them from the realities of the outside world. Most people, even the young, prefer to know the facts. Capricorn Dec. 22- Jan. 19 You may be feeling tired and a bit wrung out today, Capricorn. Although you’re a workaholic by nature, even you are forced to admit that this is a day to stay in bed. Give yourself these few hours to regroup and recoup your energy. You’ll need to be operating at peak form for all the work that’s likely to hit your desk next week. Aquarius Jan. 20- Feb. 18 There could be a missing person very much on your mind these days. Is it possible that the relationship is over and you’re the last one to know? Don’t let your insecurities get the better of you, Aquarius. It’s likely that your friend merely needs some time alone to sort out some big life issues. He or she will seek out your warmth and friendship again soon. Pisces Feb. 19- Mar. 20 Misinformation is likely to spread like wildfire today, causing a lot of unnecessary upset either among your neighbors at home or your colleagues at work. Don’t accept at face value any gossip or rumor you hear, Pisces. Check the accuracy of the information yourself. If it does turn out to be false, as is likely, you’ll feel sorry if you’ve had any part in perpetuating it.

Spring break ideas
Tess English Online Manager tae7002@lockhaven.edu Spring Break is one of the perks of being a college student. With so much work and what is usually very little free time, every break students get they must use it wisely. That means planning out what to do carefully to maximize enjoyment. If you’re feeling stuck here a few ideas of how to spend your time off. A convenient place to travel to is New York City. According to Google maps the NYC is about three hours and thirty-one-minute drive from Lock Haven. Even if you can’t afford to spend money staying on an overnight trip or an extended visit, you can take a day trip and see the sites. If you the traditional tourist spots don’t appeal to you (or you’ve already been) try checking out local spots to find hidden gems. For instance, Lip Bite Lab by BITE lets its visitors create their own customized lipstick. There is a customized lipstick color, fragrance, and finish (i.e sheer, matte, cream, etc.) each customer can take home.
Another great way to spend Spring Break is taking a road trip! There are two choices when planning road trips. One option is the classic Pennsylvania spots like seeing the Liberty Bell or checking out Pittsburgh. The second option themed trips like visiting the most haunted places or the prettiest small towns in the state. A little research can help you find the perfect place, but if you need some inspiration look up 10 Unforgettable Road Trips To Take In Pennsylvania Before You Die on www.onlyinyourstate.com. If traveling seems daunting why not plan a visit home. It may seem mundane, but you’ll feel at ease in a familiar setting. Family and friends will often take care of you when you visit home. If visiting family isn’t feasible try doing a staycation. Stay in your apartment or get a hotel, spend time taking a mental break, and enjoy hobbies such as drawing, writing, fishing, gaming, and sports. A break doesn’t necessarily mean travel. Breaks should be relaxing however you personally see fit.

Signs of an immature man
Kiara Carson Managing Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu
When it comes to having an emotional conversation or acting your own age, females have the upper hand meaning they’re more mature than men. Studies have shown that every female has a brain that creates connections and condenses itself for processing faster than the male brain. Not only is it scientifically proven, but men today tend to prove it to a lot of women by showing us how they act. Here are five actions that may alert women to an immature man: 1. They joke about everything to avoid serious conversations- Men are famous for being emotionally detached and often try to def lect it by becoming a huge clown. 2. They practically invented being a “momma’s boy”- Men can often be attached to their mothers growing up because they look for a love they aren’t getting from their dads or she spoils him into really loving her which could lead to the same result: his mother in his life forever! And not in the good way either.
3. They have childish friends- Believe it or not immature men usually run in packs, so if there’s one, there could be a whole group of them that come with knowing or dating one. 4. They cheat- Men have been really famous in the act of cheating, making it difficult for women to even trust them in committed relationships. Cheating is one of the def lect mechanisms used to push back against the emotional commitment required to make a relationship work. Men often turn to it for selfcontrol or because they have something else going on with themselves. 5. They’re not realistic- It’s not an issue to be a dreamer unless you dream all the time about things that are simply not possible. For example, when it comes to finding a woman to love these days, it’s all about how they look rather than who they are or even worse, they are old-fashioned and want a woman to submit to them as easily as they did back then. They may even dream about careers or being wealthy like anyone else does, but men tend to strive for it more intensely than women in certain aspects.

Signs of an immature woman
Tess English Online Manager tae7002@lockhaven.edu For every toxic man in the streets there is an equally toxic woman. Unfortunately, women’s malicious behavior towards their significant others is not of great social importance. In an effort to combat this here are few ways to spot an immature woman. 1. They think it’s okay to hit men, but not okay for men to hit women- regardless of how you view violence there needs to be equality in standards. If someone agresses a fight they have to be prepared for consequences of self-defence or there should be no brawling all together. 2. They don’t compromise- it’s her way or the highway. Whether it’s where you spend your date nights or how you spend your money a toxic woman digs in her heels to get their way. Either you do what she wants or she gets angry and upset with you. 3. They shift responsibility- no matter what the issue is a toxic woman never presents herself at fault. She wants dinner, and why didn’t you order it? She knocks over a cup, well why would you put it there? She instagaites, but you are the one starting the fight. 4. They expect you to pay- there is nothing wrong with chivalry, but when it comes to shared expenses (i.e rent,
bills, car payments, etc.) both partners should be chipping in. Although there is nothing wrong with being a homemaker, that should mean you put effort into maintaining the household, taking care of pets, and being the primary caregiver to your kids. Not that father shouldn’t pitch in, but as the stay at home parent you need to do the actual work of parenting. 5. They often threaten to leave- Ultimatums are an immature women’s best friend. While it is similar to they don’t compromise, it has the added bonus of psychological manipulation of using their significant other’s love of his or her partner against them. 6. They cheat- this one is a little obvious, but it never hurts to say cheating on your partner is completely unacceptable behavior regardless of gender. Immature women may also be subjective to emotional cheating more so than men. They have intimate and romantic relationships as her relationship with a “special” friend is normal, and you are just being jealous for acting otherwise. 7. They check phones for proof of anything- trust is the foundation of any good relationship, but an imaature woman never believes you and constantly asks for validation of honesty and loyalty.

Alex Klucker of the LHU Wrestling team got a huge win on Senior night as the Bald Eagles capped their 2019-2020 dual season on Saturday night against Cornell. At 157, Klucker brought the crowd to its feet with an electrifying first period. He scored a quick takedown, racked up eight near fall points and led 10-1 after one period. A late third-period takedown helped Klucker secure the major over Cornell Adam Santoro, 14-1. Lock Haven was back on top of the dual at 10-7.

Laurel Moyer ran to a pair of school records as the Bald Eagles closed the 2019-20 regular season at the Kent State Tune Up. Moyer ran to a school record at 1,000-meters to open the day and she returned to action late in the day to bookend her record-breaking day with a dazzling effort in the 3,000-meter run. LHU prepped for the postseason with a number of Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) championship qualifying marks and standout-jumper Karina Long (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) soared to a season-best mark in the long jump. Moyer, the Bald Eagles mid-distance and distance standout, prepped for the postseason in a big way, thanks to a dominating effort in the 1,000-meter run. She was third overall and the top Division II finisher in the a race that saw her run 2:57.61 and break her own school record, which she established last season in the event. Moyer was third out of 14 total runners in the event. Moyer capped a sensational day with a second school record, this time at 3,000-meters. Her time of 9.58.79 broke a nine-year old school record. The top Division II finisher in the field, she was second out of 27-plus runners. The time just missed the NCAA DII provisional championship standard and is the No. 2 mark this season in the PSAC.

NBA Hot and Cold Teams
Mark Matthews Sports Editor mjm2923@lockhaven.edu
The NBA season is back in swing after the conclusion of AllStar weekend from Feb. 14-16. There are currently hot and cold teams as the NBA playoffs approaches on Apr. 18. The Milwaukee Bucks are currently proving they can take one step further this postseason to the NBA Finals after losing to the eventual champions Toronto Raptors in last year’s showing. Recently on Feb. 23, the Bucks became the earliest team in NBA history to clinch a spot to the playoffs. Many talks have already raised that reigning MVP of the Milwaukee Bucks Giannis Antetokounmpo is a lock for an unanimous MVP award, an honor only Stephen Curry has accomplished. Another hot team in the Eastern Conference is the Toronto Raptors. From Jan. 15 to Feb. 10, they had a 15 game winning streak before losing to the Brooklyn Nets on Feb. 12. Despite the absence of Kawhi Leonard who signed with the Los Angeles Clippers last summer, the Raptors’ team chemistry and depth make them a legitimate contender in the East. The Boston Celtics currently sit at the third seed in the Eastern Conference. They have been quietly relevant this season. They have a 40-17 record right now which is about 70 percent win percentage. Their record last year was about 60 percent. The addition of Kemba Walker over the off-season has seemed to be a better fit than Kyrie Irving last season. The Miami Heat have been the surprise of the season. They are fourth in the East with a winning percentage of about 63 percent. Last season, the Heat squad missed the playoffs with a losing record at about 48 percent. Every other team in the East has stayed stagnant or ice-cold as the East is a weaker conference than the West. The Philadelphia 76ers, Indiana Pacers, Brooklyn Nets, and Orlando Magic currently hold the final four playoff positions. As far as the West, there have been a bunch of hot teams. The Los Angeles Lakers currently hold the top spot in the Western Conference with a 44-12 record. To put in perspective
how hot the Lakers have been this season, they have already beat en their record from the previous season by seven wins and it’s only February. The addition of Anthony Davis over the off-season has clearly shown the Lakers are a force to be reckoned with. It does not hurt as well having LeBron James on your team. The Denver Nuggets are second in the West. They have proven they can get it done during the regular season, but as far as the postseason they have more to prove. The Portland Trail Blazers defeated the Nuggets last year in the second round of the playoffs. The Los Angeles Clippers hold the third spot in the Western Conference. Reigning Finals MVP Kawhi Leonard signing with team has boosted the team immensely as the Clippers barely squeaked in the playoffs last year with the eighth spot. The Houston Rockets have been an interesting team this season. They traded away both their centers Clint Capela and Nene Hilario. With giving away their centers, they have decided to commit to the small ball play. It will be interesting to watch as they face the other opponents in the West as every other team has a big man to rely on in the center position. The other teams currently in playoff position in the West are the Utah Jazz, Oklahoma City Thunder, Dallas Mavericks, and Memphis Grizzlies. The teams in the Western Conference who have been ice-cold are the Portland Trail Blazers, San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Golden State Warriors. The Trail Blazers are coming from a Western Conference finals appearance to being outside playoff position. The San Antonio Spurs are on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since the 1996-97 season. The Minnesota Timbewolves are ice-cold with strings of a 11-game losing streak earlier in the season and a recent 13-game losing streak. Finally, the Golden State Warriors this season have been a complete 180 of who they were last season. The Warriors had the best record in the West last season, but have the worst record this season. The departure of Kevin Durant and injuries of Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson are the main reasons for the sudden fall.

She single-handedly qualified for four different events and is currently ranked top-12 in the quartet of events. She ranks sixth in the 800m, 11th in the mile, second in the 3000m, and third in the 5000m. She will look to re-establish her dominance from a year ago, a championship meet that saw

her win the mile run, finish second in the 3000m and contribute to the fourth-place finishing distance medley relay team. The sophomore trio of Riyana Owens, Karina Long, and Billie Jo Bollinger, also intend to make a splash as they scored in a combined five different events last year. This year they picked up right where they left off; Owens ranks tenth and ninth in the 60m and 200m respectively, Karina Long ranks sixth in the long jump and ninth in the triple jump, and Bollinger finds herself seated tenth in the 60mhurdles and sixth in the Pentathlon. Last season (2018-2019), the LHU women placed seventh at the PSAC Championships, the highest finish for the team in a seven-year span. The women look to grow on that success at this year’s championships.
LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – With the 2019-20 regular season in the rearview mirror, the Lock Haven University wrestling team is focused on the postseason. With the Bald Eagles first ever MidAmerican Conference (MAC) Tournament on the horizon, LHU is well represented in the latest MAC and NCAA Division I individual rankings. Standouts Luke Werner, DJ Fehlman and Kyle Shoop were all listed in various NCAA rankings this week. Werner, LHU’s junior 125-pound superstar, is ranked as high as No. 8 by InterMat. He’s ranked No. 10 by TrackWrestling and FloWrestling has him slotted at No. 13. Fehlman is ranked No. 18 nationally by InterMat and No. 28 by TrackWrestling. Shoop is nationally ranked by both TrackWrestling (No. 17) and FloWrestling (No. 23). Werner had originally planned to redshirt this season, but he stepped back into the lineup for the Central Michigan dual on December 6, 2019. Werner will head into the postseason with a 26-4 record. Fehlman and Shoop, both Lock Haven seniors, also enter the postseason on high notes. Fehlman is 22-7 overall and has 110 career wins. Shoop is 18-5 and has 126 career victories, the second most in LHU history.
On Tuesday (Feb. 25), the MAC released its final February 2020 Wrestling Rankings. Werner and Fehlman were ranked No. 2 at 125 and 133, respectively, while Shoop was ranked No. 3 at 141. Jared Siegrist was ranked No. 5 at 174 and Corey Hazel was ranked No. 5 at 184. Siegirst sits on 90 career wins and Hazel returned to the lineup this past weekend after a long layoff. As a team, LHU was projected to finish fourth at the MAC Championships. Lock Haven will make its first ever appearance at the Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament. The 201920 MAC Championships are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 7-8 at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois. This is LHU’s first season in the MAC after a historic expansion was announced last season. Last March (2019), it was announced that Lock Haven, along with the other members of the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL), would be joining the Mid-American Conference for the sport of wrestling this season. It was a historic moment for college wrestling and one that made the MAC the second largest wrestling conference in the country.
