NEWS The Global Viewers Club serves tea to expand cultural circles Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu The Global Viewers Club served native tea from around the world in Raub Hall Lobby on Monday as a part of International Education Month, an initiative to expand the cultural circles of students.

The following are descriptions and histories of the teas served: United Kingdom Black tea was popularized during the British Empire’s age of imperialism, roughly 16th to early 18th century. Due to black tea’s ability to keep flavor for several years after it’s drying, the leaf was used as a currency in some parts of the world.

Chai Tea was developed in India in the 1800s by mixing several black teas as well as Indian herbs and spices. Although India was a major exporter of tea In the 1800s, the tea was caught up in a British monopoly.

It wasn’t until the Indian Tea Association promoted it drinking in mines textile mills and factories that tea was drunk in India, Then individual vendors added herbs and spices.

Irish breakfast tea, as the name proposes, is generally drunk during the morning hours. It differentiates itself from Scottish and English breakfast teas with it’s addition of a herbs from Assam, a region in the Himalayas.

Yerba Mate Tea is traditionally consumed throughout central and southern regions of South America. Unlike the rest in this list, it is brewed from the root of a shrub called the yerba mate. The root was first consumed by the natives who lived in southern brazil. Yerba mate remains a large part of brazilian culture and economy today.

Cassandra Fiorino, a senior Health Science Major, said,“I think that a lot of the social cultural and eating traditions are tied with tea in many different parts of the world. If you think about South America, Morocco and Japan it is something that unites us all despite the vast differences how it’s served and what it tastes like.”

The fight for foreign languages: Will French fade at Lock Haven University?

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Melanie Bowman, Lock Haven University’s sole French professor, bobs from her office into her French 3 class promptly. “Bonjour” she’ll inevitably say with a nerdy and enthusiastic grin. ”Are we excited for French today?”

To which she may hear an occasional groan or two from the gray-faced class as she loads her Powerpoint. She’ll press on, unabated. Few students are aware of the lines which now are drawn through her classroom.

Bowman is a new professor to the university. She applied for a full-time position at LHU and traveled across the country from Luther College in Iowa only to learn upon arrival that she would be kept on only as a parttime assistant professor. The reason is a decline in the number of students choosing French as a major course of study.

Kyoko Amano, Dean of Liberal Arts and Education at LHU, said, “It’s a national problem. There are fewer students who want to study French.”

Amano explained that the University administration is exploring options involving intercollegiate cooperation. For example, LHU may be able to offer higher level courses in Spanish while other PASSHE universities might provide the upper level courses in other languages, like French. She speculated that languages other than Spanish might be primarily be moved online for future students who choose to major in those foreign languages.

Amano said, “Think about how the Spanish professors are doing it.

They have been offering all four levels of Spanish as well as other major courses online, and they have been very successful. We are living the in the 21st century and we should take advantage of technology to benefit our students.”

Amano said LHU students currently enrolled as French majors or minors will be able to continue with their studies, and the university is obligated to ensure that they can graduate with those degrees. However, for the first-year student just now declaring French as a major, the required

coursework may be delivered in different formats than the past.

According to Dr. Brooke Harlowe, professor of political science, universities are simply giving too many people Ph.Ds. Currently, however, there are not enough jobs within academia to support them. Although many professors are highly qualified to take on full-time roles, they struggle in a system which is harsh to incoming professors and where the professors’ union, APSCUF (Association of Pennsylvania State College & University Faculties) can’t protect them.

Stan Berard, a tenured Political Science professor who has served as the president of the LHU branch of APSCUF, raised concerns about the context surrounding Dr. Bowman’s hire. He said, “What’s at issue here is that the contract does not guarantee that a temporary appointment will be full time. So the position was advertised as full time temporary. Then after the offer was extended, they figured out that the enrollment weren’t going to be what a full time position would require. So, they decided to change the offer. But this was after having conducted a search for a full time position.”

Berard explained that faculty consulted the state APSCUF office, not on behalf of Bowman because she is not a full-time employee, but on behalf of the department and faculty members because the university had originally advertised for a full-time position and interviewed people as if the job was full-time. He found that there was nothing that could be done for the situation.

Harlowe said, “The reason that languages are failing at Lock Haven University is because our faculty don’t value them.” She explained that faculty who have a role in crafting the curriculum have the ability to create a demand for foreign languages by requiring them to be taken to graduate.

“When we say that our students don’t want to take this or nobody will sign up for my major, we’re essentially saying that we’re going to let the students decide what we’re going to teach,” said Harlowe. “Then, we’re no longer the experts, we’re just teaching whatever.”

In regard to Bowman, Harlowe said, “They didn’t give--and not just Professor Bowman--but they didn’t give who was going to take that position a chance to succeed, and that makes me angry.”

NEWS 4 Sigma Kappa hosts cook off for Alzheimers research Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Sigma Kappa hosted a Ultra Violet Cook Off, Monday in the P.U.B. Multipurpose room, to raise money and awareness for Alzheimer’s disease research.

Carly Walizer won the cook off with her bacon mac and cheese bites.

The cook off was apart of Sigma Kappa’s month long venture to end Alzheimer’s disease, which is apart of their month long initiative.

Other activities have included: SigKap Stacks; a coffee and hot chocolate table; and a movie night. Alzheimer’s disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease which disproportionately affects elderly people.

The disease advances overtime and there currently is no cure.

Brianna Coval, a psychology major and Vice President of philanthropic services, said, “There are some Sisters in the Chapter that have family members who have or had Alzheimer’s. The rest of us who do not have close family members with Alzheimer’s understand how devastating the disease is and how hard it is for the person with it and their family and we would like to live in a world without Alzheimer’s.”

Hardy named director of admissions at Lock Haven University Julie Stellfox

Communications Specialist jms833@lockhaven.edu Angelic Hardy has been appointed to the position of director of admissions at Lock Haven University. Hardy began her duties November 10. As director, she will oversee the Office of Admissions and will be responsible for recruitment, marketing plans, and admission policies.

Hardy was the interim director of admissions for six months prior to her appointment and has been working within the division of enrollment management and student affairs at LHU for the last four years. She holds a master’s degree in teaching and learning with an emphasis on instructional technology from Lock Haven University. She also has a bachelor’s degree in business administration with a concentration in management information systems and an associate degree in computerized office management.

Hardy brings 20 years of experience in education to the position ranging from network administration to the facilitation of employee professional development. She has completed two leadership programs through Penn

State University and most recently, she is a 2016 graduate of the Leadership Clinton County program.

“We are very excited to have Angie in this position. The time she spent working in enrollment management allowed her to create relationships throughout the campus that she can now leverage to help promote the university to prospective students and their families,” said Dr. Tyana Lange, vice president for enrollment management and student affairs. “Angie has a passion for education and especially Lock Haven University. She will be able to use that passion to support our admissions efforts.”

“I’m looking forward to improving the collaboration between LHU and the nearby high schools in an effort to better inform students and staff of the educational pathways available at LHU for students’ career paths,” Hardy said.

Hardy is actively involved in the community through a variety of volunteer programs including the Mill Hall Elementary School PTO, Keystone Central School District’s Challenge Day, Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, and the Lock Haven Area Shoe Bank. She was born and raised in Lock Haven, where she resides with her husband, Jason, and 9-year-old twins, Jaxon and Sophia.

Shameless premieres eighth season, already slated to be renewed for ninth Tanner Meeker

Arts & Entertainment Editor tjm1848@lockhaven.edu Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard of the television show “Shameless”. You know, that show with the excessive swearing, casual sex and drug use, and constant chaos… As Showtime’s highest and longest-running show, Shameless breaks through political barriers with a big middle finger to anyone who disagrees.

Now in its eighth season, the series depicts a family of six kids who live in poverty are left to fend for themselves because their mother is bipolar and will often leave for long periods of time with no notice, while their alcoholic father struggles to function and provides no assistance to the family. Set in the ghetto of south side Chicago, the Gallagher family sets out to prove themselves to the world despite their two lack-of-functioning parents.

The show might seem overwhelming at first, but once you get to acquainted with the characters and their emotions you will see that they are all facing their own unique problems that most privileged kids would never think about worrying about. Their broad range of characters allows them to tackle a wide variety of political issues ranging from alcoholism to transgenderism. Here is a list of a few of the main characters to give you guys a little advantage when you start the first episode: Frank Gallagher (played by William H. Macy)This father of six can often be seen wearing looking homeless, passed out on the floor around the Gallagher house or spending the little money the family has on booze at their friend and neighbor’s bar, The Alibi.

Despite the fact that Frank is actually decently intelligent (he studied Psychology at Berkeley for a semester), most people that know him see him as a rambling drunk who will either amuse you or aggravate you. He serves as a huge headache in most of his childrens’ lives and provides no parental support whatsoever. Although this narcissist has trouble thinking of anyone but himself, he is also a hopeless romantic and fell in love with his wife Monica during that first semester of college at Berkeley. Since then, they have been living in a drug-fueled bender of a life full of ups and downs, but mostly downs.

Fiona Gallagher (played by Emmy Rossum)The oldest and head of the Gallagher family, Fiona is forced to take on the role of her mother. Getting the kids ready for school, paying the bills, and keeping up with the house has been her everyday life since she has been seventeen. Her fierce loyalty to her family makes her an easy fan favorite.

Whether she is finding ways to make a little extra money for her family in the various jobs she is employed at, or going out and having drinks with her friends and being crazy, one thing is for sure; she is an incredible sister and will alwyas protect the people that she loves.

Phillip Gallagher (played by Jeremy Allen White)“Lip” is the second-eldest child in the Gallagher family, and might have the most going for him. You can find him taking the SATs for other students (often scoring a perfect 2400) for extra cash, or tactically avoiding the cops while selling marijuana from an ice cream truck during the summers.

Despite his above average intelligence, Lip shows terrible decisionmaking skills. He, like his father, drinks copious amounts of alcohol, has unprotected sex with a wealth of women, and even gets expelled from college for taking a baseball bat to his professor’s car, then fighting off the campus police officers who tried to stop him. I find myself rooting for Lip often because he is the one who has the highest chance of making something of himself and helping get their family out of the ghetto.

Ian Gallagher (played by Cameron Monaghan)Ian is the third eldest sibling in the household. Ian comes out as gay in the first season and faces many hardships noramlly associated with the LGBTQ+ community. Ian does not play the conventional gay role though, he is trying to enlist in the army, and works as a paramedic. He is also diagnosed with bipolar disorder. So, you could say this kid has his plate full. Arguably the most strong-hearted Gallagher, he often is the only one who feels symapthy for his parents. Ian has experiences with dating a convict, and a transman.

The perks of being a thrift shopper Jesse Smith Staff writer jcs2355@lockhaven.edu If you’re like most college students, you don’t have hundreds of dollars to spend on clothes and accessories. That doesn’t mean you can’t rock the sweetest sweatshirt on campus. In fact, some of the sweetest sweatshirts I have, I found at thrift shops. They are cheap, comfortable, and stylish!

In any thrift shop there are undoubtedly hundreds of items to select from. They can range from corduroy suits, to kitchen utensils, to a pair of old roller skates. Personally, my favorite items in thrift shops are the sweatshirts and jackets. There are typically hundreds of unique sweatshirts and jackets that are just dying to be given a new home!

The wide variety of clothing at thrift shops enables the opportunity for you to create a sense of style that is uniquely your own.

Over the past four years I have managed to acquire quite the collection of sweatshirts which were broken in well before I purchased them.

Fortunate for me, the broken in and worn-down look just happens to be my personal sense of style when it comes to sweatshirts and jackets.

At the local Thrift store or Salvation Army store you can find hundreds of old crewnecks, denim jackets, and flannel shirts for under

five dollars. These pieces of clothing are essential to being comfortable while remaining sensible with your budget and stylish with your giddy up. Any time you walk into a thrift shop you never know what you’re going to find. Occasionally high-quality name brands will pop up, or a Lock Haven football sweatshirt will be calling for a new home.

Whether you’re looking to save money, find a fun piece of clothing, or add to your collection of flannels, the best thing about thrift shopping is that it is for a good cause. This is especially true for organizations like Salvation Army or Goodwill, which both have stores in downtown Lock Haven.

It is important to note that not everything you see in thrift shops is worth investing in. For every sweatshirt worth buying there are probably twenty other articles of clothing.

It is also important to note that if you’re looking for shoes or pants, it is hard to find the right fit at a thrift shop. I recommend focusing your search in the sweatshirt and jacket isle, but don’t hesitate to shoot the other sections a glance. For example, just this past weekend I found a perfectly good suit for twelve dollars! I wore it to a presentation today and people thought I had spent hundreds on it. You never know what you’re going to find!

With an open mind on thrift shops you can develop your casual and professional closet for a budget fit for a college student. During these winter months I highly encourage you to check out the local thrift shops and expand your closet in the most sensible way!

10 Are your dreams trying to tell you something important Mia Swales Staff Writer Mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Some nights we wake up and wonder what we dreamed about and if we can remember, we speculate about what those dreams might mean for us. Many people think their dreams and their nightmares carry a sign of greater meaning or significance in their lives.

Researchers have yet to find out the purpose behind human dreaming. However, according to the website Very Well, Sigmund Freud’s theory suggests that dreams represent our unconscious desires, thoughts and motivations. I believe this to be true, I have found myself dreaming about something that was on my mind just before I went to bed or dreaming about something I am planning to do.

According to the Nokia Health Blog, your dreams typically happen in the sleep stage known as REM. REM stage is when you’re at your deepest level of unconsciousness and have been asleep at least 90 minutes. Scientists report that we can also dream in Non-REM stages, and that we may have many dreaming periods throughout the night that we don’t remember.

For those searching for that deeper meaning to their dreams, here are some interpretations according to the website, The Crazy Facts: Falling – When you feel like you are falling in your dreams, it just might mean that you are holding on to something in your life that you don’t need to worry about and should let go.

Flying – A dream in which you are flying may mean you have freed yourself of something that was holding you back, and now you can have better control over your life.

Death – Dreams about death may represent the end of something in your life, making room for something new to begin.

Being chased – This may symbolize that you are trying to avoid a situation that really needs your attention.

Not prepared for exam – A common dream—or more likely a nightmare—for people in college, this may mean you are being too critical of yourself.

Being late – A dream like this may mean you are missing out on a big opportunity in life.

Babies – Visions of babies in our dreams may represent a new beginning.

Although our dreams may have common elements, each of us also has dreams that are unique to our lives and reflect our personal fears and desires. Our dreams and nightmares may help us make sense of our experiences, come to grips with our problems, and even plan out future actions.

So consider this: maybe your dreams are trying to tell you something. Give it some thought, and perhaps, sleep on it.

Websites that aren’t social media can help you and here’s why Jesse Smith Staff writer jcs2355@lockhaven.edu The internet is undoubtedly one of the best tools technology has to offer.

Students, professors, and millions of Americans utilize it every day. When we’re not in search of facts to use in our education, we typically browse through endless pages of social media. Social media is great and can be used to network like humans never have. Nevertheless, it is important to remember the entirety of the internet and what it has to offer.

It would be a shame if we didn’t use the internet to connect and share experiences. It would also be a shame if we didn’t use the internet to conduct research and learn new information.

It is a tool that enables the exchange of information on a platform which is accessible by essentially anyone in today’s day and age. This ability has never been presented to another group of humans in history. It is imperative that we, as a generation, do not abuse this power.

There are millions of websites and tools out there which can help us in our everyday lives. We have the ability to access endless information and ancient knowledge, yet we tend to be intrigued most about what our 10th grade classmate is doing on vacation.

There are so many websites that can be used to further knowledge and broaden perspective, it is vital to be aware of them. This will be so important when you are no longer required to conduct research for classes. Then you can use the internet as a tool to stay ahead of your career, and be informed on the newest findings. Information for any hobby is out there as well. This kind of learning is about what you want to know, so it makes you, and your interests, that much more compelling!

Here are a few websites that allow the user to customize the substance to their liking, and provide information on a plethora of topics.

Youtube – library of videos ranging from intellectual lectures, podcasts, DYI tutorials, to that week’s top football highlights. But don’t get side tracked because the “Fail” videos NEVER end.

StumbleUpon – search engine that allows users to customize the “stumble” button into categories they are interested in. Categories range from economics, fashion, agriculture, movies, philosophy, sports, and so much more. By clicking the “like” button on a certain article, more articles like that one appear.

Khan Academy – a virtual library with extensive amounts of information, similar to an online university, but it is completely free. However, there is no degree or set course work.

These websites allow the opportunity for intellectual growth while using the internet. The use of these websites will continue to fill your mind with abstract thoughts and unique interests well after your education. However, they are in no case a substitute for the course load and principles learned from the college experiences.

It’s easy to get caught up in the mundane ways of social media scrolling, and the feeling afterwards is hardly ever comforting. Before mindlessly browsing, exercise your brain and learn something new! Then watch those “Fail” videos, because they never get old.

Your vitamins are your friends: Take them Ben Ronemus Staff writer bj1324@lockhaven.edu A healthy diet is well-rounded with regard to nutrient intake. There are two types of nutrients: macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are comprised of fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Micronutrients are vitamins and minerals. Both types of nutrients are important to a wellrounded healthy diet, but micronutrients are usually not as well understood as the macronutrients. The vitamin group includes the water soluble (C and B complex) and fat soluble (A, D, E, K) categories. Minerals are inorganic nutrients that are often times single elements such as calcium, potassium, sodium, among others. Although small, micronutrient intake must be payed close attention to. A lack of vitamins and minerals can lead to diseases such as anemia and scurvy, while there is also a possibility of toxicity if too many are taken.

College students are more likely to use dietary supplements than the population as a whole. A dietary supplement includes more than just vitamins and minerals, it also includes products such as protein supplements.

The use of all dietary supplements increases with age after adolescence.

Around two-thirds of college students are estimated to use some sort of dietary supplement. The increased use of dietary supplements by college students means that it is especially important for students to understand what they are taking.

It is important to understand what vitamins and minerals are needed and when it is necessary to take them. One main reason for using supplements is a poor diet. Concerning college students, this often results from a lack of funds and time. Certain dietary restrictions, such as a vegetarian or vegan diets, also require either supplements or fortified foods. For vegetarians and vegans, it is important to pay attention to minerals such as iron and vitamins such as B12. People with certain medical conditions sometimes need certain supplements, but should consult with a medical professional about their needs. When picking a supplement, look for products specific to age and sex.

Like medications, it is possible to take too much of certain vitamins and minerals. There are toxic levels for every vitamin and mineral that must be paid attention to. For vitamins, fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K must be paid the most attention to. Water soluble vitamins C and B complex vitamins are harder to take in toxic levels, but still must be taken in only recommended doses. Iron supplements can also be dangerous if taken in excess. It is best to consult with a medical professional if iron supplements are being considered. When picking out a supplement, it is beneficial to pick one that is not in excess of daily values to keep the risk of toxicity to a minimum.

An optimal situation is one where a healthy diet is maintained with no supplements. Everyone should strive to eat a well-rounded diet that does not require supplements. Vitamin and mineral supplements should be considered a last resort to acquire nutrients. The bottom line is, everyone should pay attention to what they are eating or taking to keep vitamin and mineral intake at necessary levels.

Books aren’t going away anytime soon.

In a study done by the Rush Memory and Aging Project, it was found that frequent reading and writing throughout life both exercise the brain and keep Alzheimer’s at bay. Nearly 300 men and women over the age of 80 were given questionnaires about how often they read books, visited libraries, or wrote letters throughout their lives. Those who did these tasks often had better memories. “Mental stimulation helped to protect the brain’s memory,” said the Fisher Center for Alzheimer’s Research Foundation.

My high school laid off my librarian when I was in 10th grade, and many people wonder if libraries are necessary in a technological age. But both librarians and libraries are still important because trips to the library enhance memory. Besides, 88 percent of people who read e-books still read printed books, too, said Abigail Wise.

There are many more ways that reading is healthy for the mind. Reading relieves stress because it allows the reader to take their mind away from problems in a healthy way. It also increases your intelligence because it expands your vocabulary and gives your brain a workout, said Wise. Whenever someone reads, they have to

remember plots and characters and learn new ideas or issues that the author is trying to make the reader aware of.

Just like reading, writing is also helpful. Writing helps you think more clearly and in a more sophisticated manner, said Francisco Saez. Skills, such as organization, acquired via writing can then be translated into interpersonal communication.

It is also a wake-up call for your brain. Everyone should write something in the morning, even if it’s just writing in a journal about thoughts or memories. Writing down vocabulary learned through reading is a good way to memorize definitions.

Writing also relieves stress. If you have to keep everything in your mind without writing them down, you may forget many memories or ideas. It’s a great idea to keep these memories written so that you will have them to reflect on when you’re older. When things are bothering me and I write about them, I usually realize that the problems aren’t as big as I thought they were. Or I realize that if I would’ve acted a different way or picked up on certain details, the situation that stressed me out might not have even happened. It’s sort of a way to keep yourself in line. Either way, writing gets rid of stress.

You never know what reading and writing can do. They can open up a whole new world, figuratively and literally. Just look at Harry Potter, which inspired the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Studios. It also inspired the game of real-life Quidditch (seen below).

What climate change means for Pennsylvannia Loretta Dickson

Associate Professor ldickson@lockhaven.edu The National Weather Service outlook for the coming months calls for a third straight mild winter with warmer-than-normal temperatures. Last winter was the sixth-warmest on record, and the winter before that was the warmest on record. But before you begin cheering at the prospect of less snow and ice to scrape off your car, consider the reasons for this trend.

Record-breaking weather is a result of global climate change caused by rising concentrations of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.

The predominant problem is carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuels. In 2016, petroleum, natural gas, and coal resources accounted for 81% of U.S. energy consumption, which released 5,170 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the air.

Carbon dioxide is naturally present in the Earth’s atmosphere, but today the atmospheric level is at its highest in human history. Fossil fuels were part of an ancient carbon cycle that remain sequestered for millions of years until they are extracted from the Earth and burned. Adding too much carbon dioxide to our modern-era carbon cycle has caused the Earth to warm.

We now live in the warmest climate in the history of modern civilization.

The last three years were the warmest on record globally and prompted record-breaking weather extremes. Heat waves have become more frequent, and cold waves less frequent. Record-setting hot years are the new normal as annual average temperatures continue to rise.

What does a changing climate mean for Pennsylvania? Reports from NASA, the Environmental Protection Agency, and the Pa. Department of Environmental Protection are in agreement and predict some rather harsh conditions. They suggest we should prepare for longer and hotter summers, more rain with heavy downpours, and more destructive storms.

The rising sea level will increase the extent of flooding in communities in the Delaware River Basin, particularly Philadelphia. Climate change is also likely to intensify flooding during winter and spring, followed by drought and drier soils during summer and fall. Winter snow cover is expected to decline by 20 to 60%, which will impact the Pennsylvania ski

tourism industry. Rising temperatures will melt snow earlier in the spring, and by 2050, sustained snow cover in the state won’t be enough to support winter sports.

The extreme high temperatures in the summer months will change the way we work and play outdoors. Prolonged heat waves will increase the number and severity of heat-related injuries and illnesses for people who work outside. High temperatures will reduce air quality and pose health risks, particularly to the elderly. The higher temperatures in spring and fall will lengthen the outdoor recreation season, but hotter summer months may limit people’s ability to play summer sports or safely enjoy outdoor recreation.

The agencies predict that heavy rainfall will increase in intensity and frequency during the winter and spring months. Here in Pennsylvania, localized flooding is expected to increase from extreme storms that overwhelm streams and storm drainage systems. Heavy downpours that quickly saturate soils and overwhelm roof gutter systems may cause problems for homeowners, increasing the likelihood of flooding in people’s basements and in businesses.

On a slightly positive note, Pennsylvania will benefit from a longer frost-free growing season from these climate changes. Also, the outlook for soybean production is good because soybean is less susceptible to high temperatures. However, the predicted heat waves may stress grain and fruit crops, negatively affecting their yield. It may also create more favorable conditions for pests and insects, prompting an increased use of agrochemicals.

Rising temperatures and prolonged heat waves are worrisome for milk and corn production as well, two of Pennsylvania’s most important agricultural products. Heat stress causes cows to eat less and produce less milk in hot summer months. As the corn yield lessens, that will affect the price of grain fed to livestock, with resulting effects on consumer prices.

Can any of this be changed? Yes, we can make a difference, each one of us, by making a commitment to helping the Earth. Pennsylvania needs clean sources of energy to help slow the climate change runaway train.

For example, electricity production is the largest source of carbon emissions in the state, and nearly all Pennsylvania households use electricity for cooling. As the temperature rises, the use of fans and air conditioners will rise, furthering the demand for electricity and increasing carbon emissions. Switching to clean energy sources will lessen this destructive cycle.

Men’s Basketball picks Marsteller sweeps EWL, up first win of season PSAC weekly awards Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu

The Lock Haven University men’s basketball team traveled to Pittsburgh for their third game of the season on Tuesday, November 14 to take on Carlow University. Lock Haven spoiled Carlow’s home opener with an 87-67 victory for the Haven’s first win of the season.

The Bald Eagles were led in the first half by freshman, Matt Cerruti who scored 15 of his 19 points in the first half. After a slow start, Lock Haven took control of the game on both ends of the floor.

Carlow led with 11 minutes left in the first half 13-10, then Cerruti hit a three to tie the game at 13’s. Carlow would not lead again. LHU then went on a 30-17 run for the rest of the first half.

The Bald Eagles played well on defense, only giving up four points in the paint in the first half (12 for the game). The Haven also held Carlow to a 37.93 percent field goal percentage and 20.0 percent on threes in the first half.

The Haven picked up right where it left off in the first half.

The Bald Eagles came out and continued to play solid defense and share the ball. Lock Haven had 20 assists on their 30 made field goals for the game.

The lead stretched to 30 points for the Haven at one point in the second half. With eight minutes left to play, LHU led 76-46. Final score, LHU 87 – Carlow 67.

Sophomore Amir Hinton (pictured right #22) scored 19 points, had three steals and added six assists, Hinton was one of four Bald Eagles in double figures.

Cerruti finished the game with 19 points on 7-9 shooting, while hit-

ting three of his four attempted threes’.

Senior, Ra’eese Hunt (pictured bottom #23) had 12 points on 5-9 shooting, sophomore Tarojae Brake finished with 11 points and added six rebounds.

The Bald Eagles played well on the defensive end, forcing 17 total turnovers (12 steals) and scoring 28 points off those turnovers, along with only giving Carlow seven second chance points for the game. LHU held Carlow to 35.5 percent shooting for the game and 24 percent from behind the arc.

Lock Haven will look to move to .500 on season in their next matchup on Saturday, November 18. LHU will stay on the road when they square off against IUP. The game is scheduled to tip at 3:00 p.m.

Redshirt-junior Chance Marsteller of the Lock Haven University wrestling team has been named both the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) and Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Wrestler of the Week.

Marsteller, the Bald Eagles nationally-ranked 165-pounder, is a perfect 8-0 on the season.

Sunday, Nov. 12, Marsteller was at it again and went a perfect 3-0 and won Pool A at the elite Journeymen Collegiate Classic. Marsteller downed Lehigh’s Drew Longo 8-3 in the opener and pinned American’s Michael Eckhart in just 1:09 to move to 2-0 on the day. In the Pool A finals, Marsteller – ranked No. 11 – downed No. 18 Cole Walter (Lehigh), 8-1.

Sunday Nov. 5, at the Clarion Open Marsteller put on a clinic and went 5-0 with four tech falls on the way to the individual crown. Marsteller’s first three bouts took just over 10 minutes as he overpowered his first three opponents by a combined 55-9 score. In the semifinals, Marsteller dropped Pittsburgh’s Jake Wentzel 9-3 before another dominating effort in the finals. In the finals, Marsteller needed just over six minutes to tech Utah Valley’s Demetrius Romero, 20-5.

This marks the first time this season the PSAC has announced a wrestler of the week. The Bald Eagles have now claimed back-to-back EWL Athlete of the Week awards as Alex Klucker took home the honor last week.

Five Bald Eagles earn All-PSAC football honors; Fielding & Flamer land on First Team Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Five members of the Lock Haven University football team have earned 2017 All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference Eastern Division honors including offensive lineman Trent Fielding and defensive back Isaiah Flamer , who both earned PSAC East First Team selections.

Fielding (1st Team, OG) was joined by fellow offensive lineman Devante Oliver, who earned Second Team honors at offensive tackle.

Flamer’s First Team nod led the way for a total of three LHU defensive backs, who earned All-Conference honors. Both Carlos Balkcom and Daniel Strawbridge earned Sec-

ond Team honors.

Fielding and Oliver, both redshirt-seniors, led the way for the Bald Eagles offensive line all season. The Bald Eagle offense finished with 355.5 yards per game including the PSAC’s No. 4 run-attack with 198.4 rushing yards per game. LHU ran for 20 TDs on the season thanks to the veteran offensive line, led by Fielding and Oliver.

Fielding is now a two-time All-PSAC First Team pick. The 2017 preseason All-American finished his career with 40 starts, staring at both Lock Haven and Urbana University.

Flamer led the Bald Eagles shutdownsecondary all year. The redshirt-junior is now a two-time All-PSAC selection after grabbing Second Team honors last season. Flamer finished with a team-high 94 tackles. His 63 solo tackles ranked second in the PSAC and he finished the regular season ranked seventh in

the PSAC with 8.5 tackles per game. Flamer also had two interceptions, three forced fumbles and six pass breakups.

Balkcom, a senior, finished the season with seven interceptions. He returned two of those INTs for touchdowns and those seven picks tied him for second in the PSAC. It also tied him for third all-time on LHU’s single season list. Balkcom finished his career with 12 interceptions, which are enough for seventh all-time on the career list at Lock Haven.

He added 28 tackles and six pass breakups.

Strawbridge, a senior, is now a two-time All-PSAC selection. He was a 2015 All-Conference pick who missed last season with injury, but returned this year in a big way.

Strawbridge had 51 tackles, including 31 solo, two interceptions and five pass breakups on the year.

Football closes out ‘17 campaign; Fall to Mercyhurst Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm3672@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University football team closed out the 2017 campaign on Saturday afternoon at Hubert Jack Stadium, falling to Mercyhurst, 23-10.

Despite forcing four Mercyhurst turnovers, the Lakers’ ground game proved too much to handle in the loss.

Garrett Owens carried the ball 27 times for 204 yards and a touchdown to power Mercyhurst over the Bald Eagles in the season finale.

Midway through the first quarter, John Ford took a short pass from quarterback Kyle Knight into the endzone to put Lock Haven on top, 10-7. It was Ford’s first receiving touchdown of the season and ninth overall, which leads the team.

Mercyhurst wasted no time responding, as Owens scampered 83 yards for a touchdown with one second remaining in the first quarter.

As the first half came to a close, Lakers’ quarterback Doug Altavilla connected with Theo Blackston for a six yard score. It was Altavilla’s first of two passing touchdowns on the day, despite throwing three interceptions.

Altavilla later hooked up with Brad Novak for a touchdown in the third quarter, all but putting the game out of reach for Lock Haven.

Novak hauled in four passes for 100 yards and a touchdown.

Offensively, Knight, a true-freshman quarterback who showed tons of progress throughout the season, again led the Bald Eagles. Knight only passed for 72 yards but rushed for 130.

At the season’s conclusion, Knight was Lock Haven’s leading rusher as a quarterback, totaling 760 yards and eight scores.

There are reasons to be optimistic moving forward with the Lock Haven program, and Knight could arguably be right at the top of the list.

Knight harped throughout the season about the amount of time he spends with Lock Haven head coach Dave Taynor, learning the right reads to make. No matter what level of college you play on, it is certainly a different game than high school.

That time spent with Taynor came to fruition throughout the year.

Knight’s arm strength noticeably improved, as did his reads. Moving forward, the Bald Eagles may very well have themselves an extremely talented dual-threat quarterback for the next three seasons.

Defensively, perhaps no one had a bigger game against Mercyhurst than senior defensive back Carlos Balckom, who picked off two passes on the afternoon. Balckom pushed his interception total to seven on the season, tying him for third all-time on the Lock Haven single-season list, according to the Lock Haven Sports Information Office.

In all, the Bald Eagles honored 16 seniors before the game. They included: Corey Blakey, Chris Bonk, Nick Boumerhi, Kevin Campbell, Brandon Clements, Marcus Disbrow, Trent Fielding, Austin Heinbaugh, David Lazo, Connor Marsico, Terrell Mitchell, Andres Medina-Munoz, Devante Oliver, Cole Renninger, and Daniel Strawbridge.

Lock Haven will certainly return a lot of firepower on the offensive side of the football, which will make for an exciting team in 2018.
