Are you looking for a great way to get together and connect with others? The HAC Musical Showcase is the place to go. The Showcase will be held on March 2 in Upper Bentley from 12:00p.m. to 2:00p.m. This event allows international students to come together and bring their own culture to everyone at Lock Haven University. This event was organized by Bentley, the International Office, and HAC as a way to allow students and faculty to experience new food and listen to music from different cultures. Thanks to the Laura Bryne Irish trio, HAC is able to bring the students and faculty a whole new variety of musical entertainment. This trio a flutist, fiddler, and guitarist with an Irish twist on it. The band got involved thanks to the international students choosing a form of entertainment for the event. Thanks to Bentley, and the executive chef Brian Ritchie, this event will include Irish dishes for students and faculty to enjoy while listening to the Irish trio. Lock Haven University takes great pride in organizing events for the faculty and staff and allowing international students to feel welcome. This pride allows opportunities such as the HAC Musical Showcase to encourage students to be involved. Don’t miss out on a great event with food, music and activities with friends.
On March 21 in Upper Bentley Hall, Lock Haven University will host the Laura Byrne Trio, an acclaimed traditional Irish band made up of lead performer Laura Byrne, Rose Flanagan and Pat Egan, as part of a day of international food and music to expose students and faculty to different cultures. The event will include Irish-themed music and traditional Irish food for attending students and faculty, with many opportunities to learn about Irish culture. The event is open only to students and faculty but is free to attend. During the event, Traditional Irish food will be served buffet style in upstairs Bentley at normal dining prices, but dining is not required to enjoy the event. Parking will be available for students at the lot between the Recreation Center and the Parsons Union Building for those with parking permits. 15th president inaugurated at Thomas Fieldhouse Mark Matthews Staff Writer

The 15th President of Lock Haven University recently got inaugurated. It took place on March 1. Many students, faculty, staff, and alumni gathered together in Thomas Fieldhouse for the ceremony to celebrate the official launching of President Robert Pignatello. The ceremony started with a walk in or processional by several faculty members in their cap and gowns. The song “Where Eagles Fly” by Sammy Hagar initiated the gathering. The National Anthem was sung next by Chiara Hauserman and the Lock Haven University Band. The Presentation of the Colors were presented next by the LHU Army ROTC. Special Music was played by the LHU Choir as they sung “When You Believe.” Greetings on behalf of many various faculty members were presented to Robert Pignatello to help prepare for the President’s inauguration address. The President Pignatello inauguration address itself noted a lot of key points throughout his speech. He said,“All of the students, faculty, coaches, staff, and alumni who are here. You are LHU, you are Haven Nation!” He started talking about the students. He said, “I’ve found such impressive students. I have spent a lot of time talking and listening to you (students) in all kinds of settings. Here at the fieldhouse, in the residence halls on game nights, at the rec center, on the
trolley or at Bentley.” He said, “You have the best advice in how we can make your experience better. We just need to listen to you. We want every student who walks under the arch way you all came through today to believe they can soar higher because of experience they have at the Haven.” Pignatello also said, “I have been in building mode. Building confidence, optimism, excitement to raise our profile and promote our value and impact. Building trust and relationships.” He started talking about the future. He
said, “Appreciating our great history will help us define a great future. That future will be a successful one by pursuing a strategy of growth, excellence, adaptation, and innovation. We will need to be bold, assertive, and be purposeful.” Pignatello remarks that he believes that anything is possible if we work together. He said, “In the end, it is up to us to convert our challenges into opportunities. This is why I also know no matter what obstacles are before us, by working collaboratively we can solve problems and seize those opportunities. We can control our own destiny that make one that serves students and the community if we. All of us who are here today join hands and soar higher together.” He ended his speech by saying, “I believe in LHU. I believe in us. Let’s go forward Bald Eagles!” After the President’s inauguration address, Lock Haven University’s Alma Mater was sang by everyone in the building led by Jacob Houtz. Afterwards, the Recessional started where the faculty members marched out to the song “Fly Like An Eagle” by the Steve Miller Band. During the march, however, President Robert Pignatello decided to go to the stands where the students were to interact and take pictures with them. The uniqueness and interaction President Pignatello performs with everyone at Lock Haven University makes the future look bright for each and every individual at LHU.

Thursday 07, 2019 A&E “Gray Mists Between Us” at LHU Tiana Gair Copy Editor teg5895@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven University is currently hosting an art exhibition by Jason Urban and Leslie Mutchler in the Sloan Fine Arts Gallery on LHU’s campus until Friday, March 22 named “Grey Mists Between Us.” The reception and artist talk were on Monday, February 25, but the exhibition will be on display for public viewing Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. As the title hints, the installation is comprised of large, dark, rolled prints that have sentences written on them or pictures of vegetation and even smoke. It is all about the retrospective of 1960s and ‘70s protests and violence. One of the images clearly states: “This was the state of my young heritage.” Another picture has a very pronounced script on the bottom of
the roll that reads, “Fury in Los Angles. Smoke.” However, the rest are not as clear and able to be read. There are also light elements on two of the major three pieces, which flickered half-on and half-off for the duration of the show. Mutchler and Urban are in collaboration together and call themselves JULMstudios. They are based in Brooklyn, NY. Their works of art add in literature from the past, which involves extensive research into the past and those writings, their publishers, and more. They pride themselves in that their work is only understood if it is taken in as a whole—not one image or sculptural object could simply get across the intended mean-

“The Greatest Showman” movie review Kristin Turner Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu “The Greatest Showman” is about the amazing and inspiring true story of how P. T. Barnum went from nothing, built up from that, worked his way up and started the circus. With an all-star cast of Hugh Jackman, Zac Efron, Zendaya, Michelle Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, and Keala Settle. It was directed by Michael Gracey and premiered on December 20, 2017. It tells the story of how P.T. Barnum went from a poor life of having nothing to piecing together a circus with the help of his wife and two daughters while rising to fame with the start of the circus. The amazing part of the movie is when he was finding people who were being rejected by other people for how they looked. Barnum
put them in his circus because he looked past their appearance and looked at their talents instead. His fame fell when he went on tour with a European singer, let his partner take the reins of the circus and started to forget about the circus. “The Greatest Showman” is an amazing movie with upbeat, broadway-like songs and an awesome message of looking at someone from the inside out and not vice versa. I think the actors did a fantastic job playing the characters and bringing them to life because I could feel the emotion and intensity of most of the scenes. The music of the movie was fabulous, easy to sing along to, and really followed along with the situations of the scenes. The music added a powerful tone to the movie when the characters who were being rejected rose up and took a stand against
the people who were calling them a bunch of freaks. The set for the movie really made it come to life. The costumes worn by the actors were awesome because it made them look like they were in that time period.

This band came out over a decade ago with three amazingly talented, charming, and handsome young men who took the hearts of young girls and teens all across the world. They had everything: fame, fortune, love, support, movies, shows, and a huge fan base that never stopped caring for them even after they fell out of the game. Now, they’re back and better after the longest hiatus ever and are making a new impression on a different generation while the older generation of their fan base is reflecting on all the good times we had in our childhoods when they first came and took us by storm. The love was never gone and now we can show them how much we appreciate their art and music by listening to what they have to offer this time around. The three brothers have already started announcing their big plans of releasing new music and going on tours again just like back in the old days. “Sucker” is their latest and greatest song, and it is perfect. It goes over what things have been happening in their lives while they’ve been gone, mostly mentioning that they’ve all fallen in love and are totally off the market.
Kevin, the eldest, is married with two beautiful little girls. Joe, the middle child, is engaged to be married to actress Sophia Turner. And Nick, the youngest of the trio, is newlywed to actress Priyanka Chopra. They’ve all grown up and found the most important things to them outside of their music and careers which is what the goal really is in life; to live your happiness and speak your truth. “Sucker” is all of these themes rolled up into a nice, catchy pop song that we’ll all swoon over just like we did back in the good old days. When they were younger, all the girls wanted to be in their lives emotionally and physically. We all have wanted to assert the kind of love that they gave to us through their music and give back the dedication they had to make us happy. That’s why we keep buying their songs! They were teenage heartthrob legends that basically jumpstarted the boy band phase in the mid 2000’s and encouraged others to start their own boy bands like Big Time Rush and One Direction. These were the boys that put boy bands into a new perspective and targeted the right audience. They were huge then and they’ll be huge now because they are truly one of the greats.

Five ways to stay motivated
Cassandra Keller Co-managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu We’re finally in the last week before spring break and with that comes midterms on top of all the normal stress of a college student. It can be hard to stay focused and motivated when a break is so close. If you are having trouble staying motivated, here are five things you can try to keep yourself driven to finish this week out strong. -Prioritize important tasks Organization is everything when you need to stay motivated whether to study for a midterm or just survive until the end of the week. Putting all the tasks you must complete in order of importance helps you to visualize what you have already done and what you have left to do. -Be flexible Sadly, in life not everything can go as planned. That’s why it’s important to roll with the punches and be flexible. If a question you weren’t prepared for is on your midterm, don’t panic and try to make your best educated guess. -Re-evaluate regularly Re-evaluating your tasks helps you to check-off tasks as you complete more of them. It also gives you a chance to step back, take a break and reward yourself for completing tasks. Doing this will help you to keep going until you get done. -Don’t focus on your failures Thinking about the test or quiz you failed can lead you to believe that you can’t do better. Remember that you are more than your failures! Analyzing what you could have done better is a good thing, but when those failures become your central focus, it can hold you back. Focus on the future and prepare better for the next time. -Remember the big picture Even though you may have many smaller tasks to do, you have to remember what your ultimate goal is. You are going through all this stress so you get a chance to relax over spring break! You can use these tips for not only this week, but any time you have trouble staying motivated. Enjoy spring break but make sure you come back ready to finish this semester strong.

Tiana Gair Staff Writer jpm362@lhup.edu If you grew up on Hannah Montana and The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, I am sure that you remember the horrible outfit choices that they made for the casts. Extra-long, baggy graphic t-shirts and jeans for Zack and Cody were always a given, and Miley’s look usually consisted of flare jeans coupled with a skirt overtop and topped with a sequin bag. Even worse, I remember a couple teen celebrities that would wear cute dresses with awful scarfs, coats, or even ugly jeans underneath, which would ultimately ruin any remote cuteness of the dress. Back then and even for a while after, more emphasis was always seemed to be on the tops and accessories that celebrities wore. Needless to say, as we all grew up, so did fashion. Even until a few years ago, the shirt component of one’s outfit seemed to be more important than anything else. However now, the roles are reversed. What I have observed in the last two or so years is that there is a huge emphasis on what types of pants everyone is wearing—even skirts seem to have taken a fall in the most recent months. I am sure you have noticed too that people around you are going for the loudest, most eye-catching pair of pants that they can possibly find, and they’re willing to pay a pretty penny for them. The types of pants that are the most popular are camo, although I personally believe that they are now getting overplayed. I see literally every girl in existence with some form of those pants—whether they are a legging, a different color of camo, or the normal skinnyjogger kind. Plaid and striped pants are tied for second place, casually worn by the Brandy Melville and PacSun enthusiasts of the world (me, shh). The rear is brought up by utilitarian pants, hunter green or brown typically, that can be worn with just about anything, but are usually paired with your favorite Doc Marten’s and plain crop top. They all add an edge to your look and are a guaranteed head-turner if worn nonchalantly to school or out shopping. If only our Disneyfashion-loving selves could see us now; I would like to think that they’d be impressed.

This quote means so much if we really think about it. It’s almost as if we are scared to succeed, scared to be someone with power and influence. Too often, if you listen to the people around you, it is unfortunately most likely you’ll hear someone putting themselves down. Often, people will belittle themselves because they feel like what they are doing doesn’t fit in with the crowd that they hang out with or it’s not good enough. Sometimes we fear success and what it will entail. We also fear what failure will bring into our life. A big thing with failure and success is that it not only has to do with oneself, but it has to do with the influences and the company that one may keep. Even the energy that one projects, it is so easy to become that energy. It’s hard to not want to be successful when those that you’re surrounded with are succeeding. When you fail, it’s good to have people around you that will uplift you rather than kick you when you’re down. When you succeed and you’re winning, it’s good to have people that are rooting for you. It is true: life is not easy, success is not easy, and dealing with failure is not easy either. A wise man once said, “Nothing worth having ever comes easy.” The reward of success feels good when you conquer, persevere and overcome. The glass is always half-full when you want it to be. When you want something, it’s already yours. “Claim it and receive it.” If you look at the good somewhere in the midst of failure then you will find the good and you will find that the glass is half-full, not half-empty. It’s not another defeat; it’s another victory and sometimes even another lesson.

After covering the most historic team in the east through last week’s retrospective of the Boston Celtics, it feels right to cover the best team historically on the other side of the country through an analysis of the Los Angeles Lakers. I also feel incredibly intrigued to cover the Lakers imminently after Boston as these teams have a deep history with each other. Their rivalry is one of the biggest in sports, they’ve faced each other many times in the finals, and both teams have produced a plethora of legendary players in the process. This all being said, I was very excited to cover the recent draft history of one of the most popular teams in the country in the LA Lakers. However, when I researched their recent stretch of draft picks, what I found was unbelievably inconsistent with their longer stretch of history. When sports fanatics think of the Lakers, the first people they probable think about include the likes of Magic Johnson and Kobe Bryant. These two prove how strong the Lakers can be on draft night, due to the fact that Magic was their first overall pick in 1979 and West was drafted by the team with the second pick way back in 1960. This raises the question; how does a team go from frequent title winners to a team that for lack of a better phrase doesn’t know how to draft competently? Part of the answer to this question comes down to the fact that fails to have the patience required to produce the players they draft into reliable stars. D’Angelo Russel is the prime of a player who the Lakers simply didn’t believe in, only to be proven wrong in time. Even though Russel was a reliable scorer in a Laker Jersey, the team simply didn’t think he had what it takes to progress and become better than what he was. Los Angeles chose to trade Russel to Brooklyn rather than having the faith and patience required to
turn a young talent into an All-star. Years after the trade, D’Angelo Russel is in his first season as an all-star and is proving to be the foundation for countless winning season for Brooklyn. In addition to Russel, Julius Randle and Larry Nance Jr. are both players who are playing some of their best basketball ever after being trading for the Lakers. While many of the Lakers drafted over the last five years have been trading for either players or future selections, other selections have simply not lived up to the expectations placed on them. Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball have both been drafted extremely early in the draft, and both were expected to be great players from the start. Neither one of the former second overall picks have achieved the same level of success as the players drafted at the same time. In the 2016 draft Lonzo was selected over great players such Jayson Tatum and De’Aaron Fox, and the Lakers missed out on the opportunity to select Jamal Murray or Buddy Hield by taking Ingram instead. In the end, it could be stated that no matter how badly the Lakers draft, it really won’t matter as much as it should. Having the team based in Los Angeles helps the team immensely, as every offseason the team is in the hunt for the league’s stop stars mainly because of the team’s location. The Lakers can honestly forego the draft altogether, because they will always have higher chances than others to take some of the NBA’s finest stars, as seen in the Los Angeles Laker’s acquisition of LeBron James this past offseason.

Insulin cost epidemic

Opinons Editor aag9585@lockhaven.edu We need socialism because of the insulin crisis. A search for the term “insulin” on Google gives you more than 6,000 results. Scrolling through, you will find countless diabetics asking for donations so they can afford medical supplies, insulin pumps, or even insulin itself. If you have insulin-dependent diabetes you cannot rely on diet to manage your condition, since there is no cure. Before insulin became available in the 1920s, patients were put on starvation diets. Children usually died within a year, and less than 20 percent of people with diabetes survived ten years past their diagnosis. Science and medicine have improved for diabetics in the past century, allowing them to live largely normal existences, but there is a new challenge facing patients: insulin manufacturers. Three companies—Novo Nordisk, Sanofi, and Eli Lilly—have taken over the insulin market, and the price of the drug has shot up in recent years. The cost of manufacturing a year’s worth of insulin ranges between $48 and $133, according to a 2018 study. Currently, a vial of fast-acting insulin retails around $340 without insurance, and can only be used for 30 days after being opened. Diabetics have had no choice but spend more and more money to stay alive, with insulin prices growing. The cost of insulin has doubled since 2012 and tripled from 2002 to 2013. This means if you fall into poverty, you could easily die. Those who can’t afford insulin are forced to dangerously ration their supplies. Rationing insulin, or “running yourself high,” is an all-too-common way to save money. In one widely covered case, Shane Patrick Boyle, a type one diabetic, died because a GoFundMe effort to pay for his insulin came up $50 short. He had been rationing his insulin, and died of diabetic ketoacidosis, a complication that occurs when diabetics do not have enough insulin in their bodies. In one of the wealthiest nations in the world, it is a massive problem when people are dying from lack of access to insulin. There’s no justification for insulin to be kept from anyone on the basis of money alone. The insane cost of healthcare can be seen everywhere from the rising price of an EpiPen, which saves the lives of those experiencing anaphylactic shock, to the shockingly high price of birthing a child or visiting the emergency room. Medicare for all, under the bill put forward by Bernie Sanders, would create a universal, government-run health plan that includes vision and dental. Athletes of the week Christian Kelly
Basketball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu In Wednesday’s 84-68 win at Cheyney, Kelly scored a career-high 34 points to go with a career-high 21 rebounds, three assists and two blocks. He knocked down 9-19 shots from the field, including 5-11 from three and 11-14 at the free throw line. The 21 rebounds is the second most in LHU history. In the regular season finale against Kutztown, Kelly scored 32 points to go with nine rebounds and four assists. He made 10-16 shots from the field while knocking down 6-10 from three-point range and 6-7 at the line.

Basketball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Parker went off against Kutztown on Saturday and led the Haven offensively pouring in 26 points, which tied her career high. Parker was also a force inside grabbing nine rebounds and blocking two shots to round out her strong performance. Parker, the team’s leading scorer at 13.6 PPG, and the Bald Eagles now turn their attention to the PSAC Playofffs this week.

LHU Wrestling, EWL to join Mid-American Confrence Doug Spatafore
Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University wrestling program has announced that it will join the Mid-American Conference (MAC). LHU, along with the six other current members of the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) will join the MAC for the sport of wrestling only, as it was announced officially today (Tuesday, March 5) by the Mid-American Conference office. This announcement expands MAC wrestling to 15 members for next season (2019-20), as Bloomsburg, Clarion, Cleveland State, Edinboro, George Mason, Lock Haven and Rider will join current MAC wrestling members Buffalo, Central Michigan, Kent State, Missouri, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Old Dominion and SIU-Edwardsville. The seven-team expansion makes the MAC the second largest NCAA Division I wrestling conference."Expanding with the MAC is a logical step that creates tremendous opportunities for Lock Haven University," said Dr. Tom Gioglio, LHU Director of Athletics. "Besides the stability of competing in a conference that would now be the second largest in NCAA Division I and a conference that sends the second highest volume of national qualifiers to the NCAA Championships, the expansion will provide several creative opportunities to market, promote and enhance LHU's wrestling brand, which will be very beneficial at The Haven in many areas." "We are excited to join the MAC and continue our strong tradition in this growing conference," said LHU head coach Scott Moore. "The expansion will allow for increased exposure and a new standard of excellence within our program. With growth comes challenges and adversity, but we understand the long-term vision of the expansion and look forward to the opportunity. The EWL has a rich history and we will continue to remember its wrestlers and coaches who represented us on the national stage." LHU, Bloomsburg, Clarion and Edinboro's departure from the EWL, and the move to join the MAC for wrestling, will also change the landscape of wrestling in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). With the announcement to join the MAC, LHU and the other EWL institutions that are also PSAC members have informed the PSAC that they will no longer participate in the conference's annual championship. The new affiliation with the MAC requires
that institutions concentrate fully on their Division I membership and scheduling opportunities. LHU would like to thank the PSAC for its cooperation in the move to the MAC, which allows for the betterment and growth of the Bald Eagles wrestling program. The 2019 EWL Tournament is scheduled for Saturday, March 9 at George Mason University and the Bald Eagles will look to make it back-to-back team titles, and defend their 2018 championship. Mid-American Conference: Founded in 1946, the Mid-American Conference is an NCAA Division I, 12-member conference that sponsors 23 championships and is one of ten members of the Football Bowl Subdivison (FBS). With total enrollment of nearly 300,000 students, the league represents institutions of higher learning in five (5) states - Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, New York, and Ohio. Current full member institutions and the year they joined are -- East Division: University of Akron (1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947), Ohio University (1946). Haven tops ESU, advances to PSAC quarterfinals Adam Kaylor Graduate Assistant
ank4635@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - The No. 4 seed Lock Haven University women’s basketball team (15-13) took down the No. 5 seed Warriors of East Stroudsburg University (13-15), 72-65, in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First Round matchup on Monday night in Thomas Fieldhouse. The game marked the first time The Haven had hosted a PSAC playoff game since February 26, 1991 when the Bald Eagles beat California (Pa.), 93-74. The win tonight for LHU proved historic, as it was also the first playoff win for the program since the 1991 season. With the win the Bald Eagles travel to the No. 1 seed Kutztown on Wednesday for a quarterfinal matchup. The Haven started strong in the first quarter behind Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) who scored six points and grabbed four rebounds in the quarter. The Bald Eagles built up a 13-7 at the end of the first quarter, after holding the Warriors scoreless in the final 3:12 of the quarter. East Stroudsburg bounced back early and erased the Lock Haven lead in the second quarter tying the game at 18-18 with 6:43 to play in the half. The Haven immediately responded with an 8-0 run of
their own sparked by 3-pointers from Nadia Romanchock (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin) and Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley). Going into the halftime break, the two sides locked into a tight game with The Haven holding a slight 29-26 lead. In a fast paced third quarter, the Warriors and Bald Eagles exploded offensively combining for a 40-point quarter. The Warriors looked to pull away with their hot shooting but The Haven kept pace thanks to eight more points from Parker and six from Ayanda McGill-Jefferson (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey). East Stroudsburg however took a marginal 49-46 lead into the final quarter. The Haven took the lead early in the fourth quarter 53-49 when another Romanchock 3-pointer stretched the lead to four and ignited Thomas Fieldhouse. With five minutes remaining Jalyn SheltonBurleigh (State College, Pa./State College) beat the buzzer on the shot clock and gave the Haven a four-point lead. Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land), held scoreless for the first 35 minutes, would come through in the clutch scoring five quick points, including a huge 3-pointer, to give LHU a 63-57 lead with three minutes to play. Leidy also came up strong late for Lock Haven hitting four straight from the free throw line to push the lead to 68-63 with one minute remaining. In the final minute, the Bald Eagle defense stood tall and Devine headed to the line with a chance to ice the game. Unfazed, Devine calmly drained both free throws to give the Haven a six-point advantage. The Bald Eagles saw out the final seconds to secure the historic 72-65 win. The Bald Eagles were paced by fantastic nights from both Parker and Leidy. Parker dominated the paint scoring 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds. The freshman Leidy put up a career night when it mattered most, pouring in 20 huge points, including 11-15 from the free throw stripe. Devine and Romanchock both chipped in 7 points, with all seven from Devine coming in the final five minutes of the game. Romanchock dished out a team-high three assists, and Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) added six points and a teamhigh eight rebounds. Up Next: The Bald Eagles will travel to the PSAC East No. 1 seed Kutztown on Wednesday, March 6 for a 7 p.m. quarterfinal contest.
