Send Love campaign Cassandra Keller

Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu LHU psychology students Amanda Biddle, Kelsie Buckwalter, and Jennifer Taylor, a faculty advisor in the psychology department, sent over 120 Valentine’s Day cards to spanish children seeking asylum in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico as part of their Send Love campaign.

Third grade students from Forest Heights Elementary in Columbia, South Carolina as well as from local schools created the Valentine’s Day cards they sent to Mexico Friday. The goal of the campaign was to help the students create friendships through the cards.

Biddle brought the idea to Taylor after Eva Moya presented an immigration presentation last semester at LHU. Biddle said, “I wanted to figure out a way that I could help these children feel loved and accepted, when things may be hard for them, and these cards are something simple that could bring so much joy to the children.”

Special thanks to all the schools, teachers, and students that were involved with the campaign.

LHU taking on cuts to maintain sustainability Cassandra Keller

Managing Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu President Robert Pignatello told students, faculty, and staff that further budget cuts had to be made to the sustainability plan for LHU at the town hall meeting on Tuesday. “This is truly a call to action for us as an institution, as the family I think we are,” Pignatello said.

The sustainability plans the PASSHE universities have to create is part of the system redesign that began in the 2017-2018 school year as a result of the 90 million dollar reduction in state funding that was enacted in 2011.

According to the PASSHE strategic plan for 2020, “State System universities are continuing to seek the right balance to address the continuing impact of the $90 million reduction in state funding enacted in 2011; limits on pricing and affordability; and personnel cost increases, including major increases in the System’s required contributions to the state’s pension funds.”

These plans are the new annual reporting mechanism to bring more awareness to each school’s financial and operational conditions.

These sustainability plans were submitted on Jan. 17. The first drafts of these plans were reviewed by chancellor Dan Greenstein and the board of governors on Feb. 10 and Feb. 11.

After the review, Greenstein sent a memorandum on Feb. 13 that reaffirmed the guidelines for the second drafts that are due in May. This memo includes the call to reduce the use of temporary staff as well as the call to eliminate low-enrollment programs. “So we too must choose, and as with the General Assembly, we must choose now. Delay is not an option,” Greenstein said on his blog on Feb. 13.

“We will at some point receive that list of low-enrolled programs and that’s not to say that we[LHU] will eliminate all those programs, we are going to have an opportunity to consider them,” Pignatello said.

These plans will be taking effect over the next five years at all the PASSHE universities. LHU has the sustainability plan as well as other documents concerning the plan available at the website at: lockhaven.edu/university_planning/index.html

“After Hours” review

Canadian R&B singer and songwriter The Weeknd is back to his old ways with a new single “After Hours” and an album release date for his fans.

The Weeknd, also known as Abel Tesfaye, has been teasing fans with the new album for months. On Feb. 13, he announced the title of the album through a video on Instagram, which has the same name as the song released, “After Hours.”

On Tuesday, Feb. 18, he posted the album cover to Instagram with the caption, “Album Cover (New Track Tonight).” No one was expecting it, which made it a perfect time. Along with the dropping of the title song, The Weeknd’s album is officially available for preorder. The project is set to drop on March 20, 2020.

The “After Hours” track was exactly what fans like me wanted: an ode to The Weeknd’s compilation album, “Trilogy,” with a slightly different take. Similar to “Trilogy,” there is a dark cloud over the entirety

of the song and it is a longer song, sitting at six minutes. The other prominent element is an underlying, modern, electric sound.

The Weeknd is also embracing his incurable romantic side. Fans got a taste of this in his 2018 EP “My Dear Melancholy,” which included songs about ex-girlfriends Selena Gomez and Bella Hadid.

“After Hours” is a tortured love song, apologizing to a lover for breaking her heart, begging to start a family and promising to never let her down again. I speculate this is about his recent break up with Bella Hadid. Lyrics like “I wanna share babies” insinuate that The Weeknd is ready to move into the next chapter of his life: settling down and starting a family.

Hearing the time and thought that was put into this song only increases the anticipation for The Weeknd’s first full album since “Starboy,” which dropped in 2016. Tune in for the full album review in late March.

Tiana Gair A&E Editor teg5895@lockhaven.edu Eight Lock Haven University communication department students have started a news broadcast show named “HavenNOW” within their television journalism class, with the help of communication professor, Dr. Aaron Atkins.

The students have the opportunity each week to try out a different role in the production, like anchoring, producer, director, field reporter, and more. The class has already completed two segments of HavenNOW. Each week, the on-screen talent must write the stories that they will be narrating. The off-screen talent choose and assign story topics for the reporters to cover.

Tristen Klinefelter, a sophomore communication major taking the class, said: “I look forward to having the ability to write stories and incorporate video into them. The production itself lets each of us experience a different aspect of what goes into a production.”

HavenNOW will soon be played on the LHU closed circuit television programs, including in Bentley dining hall, on Tuesdays at 5 p.m. The release date is still to be determined. Check out the HavenScope TV YouTube channel in the meantime.

Going to concerts helps you live longer

Kristin Turner Lifestyles Editor kat5346@lockhaven.edu There was a study done that showed that going to concerts can help you live longer and can increase your overall wellbeing.

Seeing live music twice a month can extend your life expectancy by nine years. The study showed that concert attendance resulted in a 21 percent increase in feelings of wellbeing. It showed a strong link between live music and longevity.

The research showed that 20 minutes of concert attendance can drive the increase of feelings of wellbeing. The drivers of this increase are greater feelings of self-worth, closeness to others and mental stimulation.

Going to concerts is better for you than yoga or dogwalking.

I have gone to quite a few concerts over the years and I absolutely love going to them. I saw Big Time Rush, One Direction, Icona Pop, Tenth Avenue North, Collective Soul, Three Doors Down and A Day to Remember. I even went to Winter Jam for the first time last year.

The concert included Newsboys United, Danny Gokey, Mandisa, Rend Collective, Ledger, NewSong, Hollyn, Greg Stier, Zane Black, Dan Bremnes, Ty Brasel, Manic Drive, and Adam Agee. I plan on going to Winter Jam again this year. The lineup is Andy Mineo,

Going to concerts reduces your stress hormones, decreases your heart rate, decreases your blood pressure and lowers your respiratory rate.

It can also help your brain release endorphins and neurotransmitters that block pain. It’s good for pain relief. Going to a concert is good exercise because you could be walking around the venue, jumping during the show or dancing to one of your favorite songs. You could be getting in shape without even realizing it.

Another way that going to concerts is good for you is because you discover new music and find inspiration if you are pursuing music. It would also boost your mood.

It’s a good way to burn out any energy that you have.

It would also give you an opportunity to meet your favorite idols and superstars and maybe get an autograph from them.

It would improve your social skills by meeting new people who might love the concert as much as you do.

It can also give you an opportunity to have a personal connection with the artist when they talk about themselves and what their life is like outside of music.

How to sleep better

Tess English Online Manager tae7002@lockhaven.edu Getting into a good sleeping habit is hard to do when juggling the college lifestyle. If you are having trouble falling asleep, stayomg asleep through the night, or even just waking up with little to no energy try out these tricks to help break out of dreamless nights.

First, cut the caffeine. In the morning an iced coffee or a latte won’t harm you, but consuming caffeine late in the day will affect your ability to fall asleep at night. Keep note cigarettes and alcohol are caffeinated.

Next set yourself a bedtime. Regulating your sleep has a positive effect on your Circadian Rhythm. This controls your body’s sleep to awake pattern.

Another way to get good sleep is to cut down on screen time before bed. The blue light that emits from your computer, phone, tablet, and/or tv increases stimulates the brain and delays your ability to sleep.

Exercise is another way to promote healthy sleeping habits. Studies have linked exercise with a good night’s sleep.

If you are someone who works in your room a lot try avoiding doing schoolwork on your bed. If you decrease the amount of time spent on your bed you are more likely to associate bed as a sleeping mechanism rather than a workspace.

Valentine’s Day is a scam

Valentine’s Day is supposed to be all about love and romance, right? Well, a lot of people seem to go above and beyond for that love by buying gifts, going out to have expensive dinners, or maybe even proposing to a significant other in a huge way. So, if this romantic holiday is all about love, why does it need to be expressed with money?

Seems to me that capitalism has slipped its way into another holiday that shouldn’t be about money at all. It should revolve around the person or people you wish to express your true love to without the material things. Now, not all material things are horrible like homemade cards or even a home-cooked meal because it comes from the heart, not really from the wallet.

Sure, you’re still buying things to make those items, but at least there’s a sincere thought being put into it and your partner will definitely appreciate having something produced from you rather than having you go to a store and pick something out that they might not even like or care about.

When it comes to our capitalist country, anything can be marketed or sold in order to make a quick buck. Even things that should just be about family,

friends, and the raw emotion coming from the people that matter most turning special events into some sort of scam. With that being said, holidays have always been fair game when it comes to spending and making money in this world.

Specifically, Christmas being the holiday when people spend and make money the most because it’s a time where people like to give and get presents.

This is probably the only holiday that deserves some spoiling as it is “the most wonderful time of the year” and people spend money on a lot more things than just the presents to make sure everything is up to the jolliest of standards.

But, when it comes to a holiday that represents an emotion people should cherish, it’s seems to be all about the price tag instead of love. Luckily, there are still people who know the true meaning of making things special through the art of romance so it’s not dead yet, and neither is chivalry! Next time, think long and hard to decide whether or not you want the capitalist demon to come and ruin the mood on that beautiful day.

Gun and Violence

Tess English Online Manager tae7002@lockhaven.edu Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness are the foundation of what our country was built on. These three values core values are what fathered the Bill Rights which is the only time where guns take second place in American culture, but you have to admit it must have been a pretty close race.

No one can tell you what to say in the United States, especially not about our guns- it’s one of the amendments or something. The right to bear arms isn’t the big bad root of all evil that some people may think. Guns just get a bad wrap, but if you look back into history that was not always the case.

A popular anti-gun arguement is that the prescence of gun increases that chances of a violent conflict, which is not necessarily true. In“Guns and Violence: The English Experience” from 1996-2000 there was a decrease in overall crime, but violent crime percentage nearly doubled in its percentage.

Even before the crime rate increased England had 60 percent high violent crime rate in the United States (Malcom, 2005). In England they outlawed carrying anything to be used as weaponry. The lack of said threat in England probably makes any form of crime appealing.

This idea is reinforced in the English passive self-defense laws. In 1999 there was a criminal case where a man shot at three intruders who were robbing him with an illegally obtained. The man killed one of the robbers and wounded

the other two. The charges the man received criminally where for muder, attempted murder, and possession of an illegal shotgun. Additionally, the man who was robbed was ridiculed by man because he did not use “reasonable” selfdefense (Malcom, 2005).

While there is reason cause to investigate the murder of the robber (and the obvious possession of illegal gun), why is shooting at the other deliquents not okay? If shots are aimed to disarm rather than harm, how is it unreasonable?

If someone is violating the law and you have the chance to stop it and avoid wasting tax-payer dollars by wounding criminals why wouldn’t you? It just does not seem to stand to reason.

Another misconception is that guns increase homicide rates. Since guns have always been accessible to the American public there is no way to tell how the introductions of guns have affected homicide rates in the United States. However, gun statistics on this topic can be found in England.

Since in the 1500’s Great Britain had no formal army due to its strong Navy presence, but citizens were expected to keep guns in case the deployment of military was necessary.

There was an increase of gun use in homicide, but the overall homicide rate went down (Malcom, 2005). While there is no cause and effect proof of this idea, there is no correlation of access to guns and the increase of homicides.

Christian Kelly of the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team was named this week’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Week for the Eastern Division.

Kelly reached the 1,000 point plateau in a 91-74 win over Kutztown on Saturday as he poured in 26 points to hit the milestone.

On his historic Saturday afternoon, Kelly paced all scorers racking up 26 points and 10 rebounds. With 4:18 to go in the game, the senior guard drew a foul and went to the line for the momentous free throws. Kelly then drained both free throws with ease to the delight of the Haven faithful. Kelly was a perfect 9-9 from the free throw line and added two blocks and two steals to his performance.

Senior Rileigh Devine of the LHU women’s basketball team had a huge week for Lock Haven as she hit her 1,000th career point.

In the midweek win over Mansfield, Devine knocked in 17 points including five three pointers and seven rebounds.

Devine’s three-pointer with 6:07 left in the second quarter marked her 1,000th point as a member of the Bald Eagles.

In a tight loss to Kutztown on Saturday, Devine led all scorers pouring in a season high 26 points. The sharpshooter was 9-17 from the field including 5-8 from beyond the arc.

WBB: Bald Eagles return home to face local rival Bloomsburg

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s basketball team (11-12, 8-10 PSAC East) is set to host the Bloomsburg Huskies (12-11, 9-10 PSAC East) in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East matchup this Wednesday, February 19. Tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.

The Bald Eagles met Bloomsburg earlier this season, downing the Huskies 61-55 in a road contest. The two teams battled it out in the first half as Bloomsburg took a slight lead into the break, but a 10-0 run from Lock Haven in the third quarter gave the Bald Eagles the advantage. Despite tying it up at the beginning of the fourth, the Huskies were unable to hold off LHU’s surging offense as the Bald Eagles went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead, never looking back as they claimed the victory.

Lock Haven’s win against Bloomsburg earlier this season was their first victory over the Huskies since Dec. 30, 2017, and the first win for the Bald Eagles at Bloomsburg dating back to the 2011-12 season. In that time, the Huskies hold a 12-3 series advantage.

Bloomsburg enters the week on a hot streak, winning four of their past five matchups. The only loss for the Huskies in

that frame came to second-place Shepherd, who just narrowly edged Bloomsburg 75-73.

The Bald Eagles fell to the first-place Shippensburg Raiders 64-72 last weekend. Lock Haven held an early lead, but fell behind 42-34 as the half came to a close. Despite cutting the deficit to just a few baskets in the final frame, the Bald Eagles were unable to overcome Shippensburg.

Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./Red Land) led Lock Haven with 16 points against the Raiders, her fourth consecutive game finishing in the double-digits, while Marena Lonardi (Elizabethtown, Pa./Elizabethtown) notched 11 points. Lonardi added four rebounds and a career-high four steals.

Rounding out the top scorers was Bink Redman (York, Pa./ William Penn), who added ten points, six rebounds, two steals, and a block. Jaynelle Robinson (Williamsport, Pa./Williamsport (Monroe CC)) led the Bald Eagles with 12 rebounds to increase her PSAC-leading total to 223 (9.7/game).

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Senior guard Christian Kelly (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) of the Lock Haven University men’s basketball team was named this week’s Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Defensive Athlete of the Week for the Eastern Division.

The award marks back to back weeks Kelly has been honored by the PSAC after receiving the East Division Athlete of the Week on February 10.

In their lone game of the week, Kelly helped push the Bald Eagles to a thrilling double overtime win over No. 24 Shippensburg, 104-103, on Saturday afternoon.

Kelly asserted himself throughout the game and was dominant on the defensive end.

blocks and was a force on the glass grabbing eight defensive rebounds. Kelly had his hands all over the overtime periods, including the basket that forced the double overtime followed by a block in the final seconds to preserve the tie.

The senior closed the game in the second overtime period scoring the final five points, including a critical and one sequence to push the Haven advantage to 104-101, and in the final seconds he and the Lock Haven defense stood tall one last time to push the Bald Eagles to a 104-103 victory.

Kelly finished the night with 18 total points.

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University softball team opened the 2020 season over the weekend and the awards are already coming in, as today (Monday, Feb. 17), the Bald Eagles swept the weekly Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central Division awards.

Sophomore outfielder Mikayla Ruppert (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) was named PSAC Central Player of the Week and freshman Jada Schellhammer (Tamaqua, Pa./Tamaqua) was named PSAC Central Pitcher of the Week.

Ruppert opened the 2020 season in a big way offensively.

Throughout the first six games of the season, she hit .444 with three doubles, a triple and four RBIs. Her slugging percentage is .722 and her on-base percentage is .500. Overall, Ruppert was 8 for 18 at the plate in six starts.

After going hitless in the first two games of the season, Ruppert

went on a tear, going 8 for 13 (.615) in her final four games, including three multiple-hit games.

In a win over Southern Connecticut State, she was 2 for 3 with a run scored and a triple. In the weekend ending win over GoldeyBeacom, Ruppert was 3 for 4 with two doubles, a run scored and three RBIs. Schellhammer was the pitcher of the record in both of Lock Haven’s weekend victories. Overall, she was 2-1 with three starts and three complete games. She had six strikeouts as she made her official Bald Eagle debut during Week 1 of the 2020 season.

Schellhammer went the distance in a win over Southern Connecticut State, the first win of her college career. In a win over Goldey-Beacom, she registered three strikeouts and scattered six hits. Schellhammer allowed only one walk in the win over GBC.
