Former Reagan Administration staffer visits LHU Derek Danneker Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu “These facts will make you feel unsafe. Why? Because your professors have been lying to you,” said a New York Times bestselling author and former policy advisor to President Ronald Regan to an audience of students and faculty Thursday night in Lock Haven University’s Sloan Auditorium.

In a lecture titled “The Diversity Myth: Surrendering Freedom in Exchange for Safe Spaces,” Dinesh D’Souza said, “The (political) left has taken over the universities. The more elite the university, the stronger their hold on it.”

D’Souza is the first conservative speaker to visit LHU in 14 years.

Approximately 320 people attended the event.

He spoke directly to the audience, urging them to question their education.

“Is this what you’re paying for? An education in conformity?” he asked.

“Don’t go into the world a buffoon, never having examined your own thoughts, never having turned your assumptions into questions. That’s really what college is about.”

D’Souza’s most recent book is titled “The Big Lie: Exposing the Nazi Roots of the American Left.”

Addressing a key theme from that book, he told the audience he blames much of the moral hardship of the 20th century on the Democratic Party.

“America would make a lot of progress if the Democratic Party would just say, ‘Yes we are, in fact, the party of slavery, segregation, Jim Crow laws, the Ku Klux Klan, racial terrorists and opposition to the civil rights movement,’” he declared.

“The moment we have that truth, the sky will part and very good things will begin to happen.”

D’Souza said Southern Democrats of the 1960s were called “Dixiecrats” and they were the main opponents of the civil rights movement.

“Every segregation law enacted in the South

was passed by a Democratic Legislature, signed by a Democratic governor, and enforced by Democratic officials,” he said.

D’Souza observed that the Democratic Party is now accusing the Republican Party of fascism, which he challenges in his new book.

He said, “The big lie is that fascism and Nazism are on the right. But Hitler, after all, was a member of the National Socialist party, and Mussolini, who invented Fascism 10 years before Hitler, received a congratulatory letter from Vladimir Lenin upon his rise to power. Lenin saw Mussolini

as a comrade.”

D’Souza said the nationalism that Democrats use to characterize President Donald Trump as a fascist is only descriptive, not defining.

“Democrats are trying to smuggle nationalism over from fascism, but nationalism is not actually a feature of fascism,” he said.

He said that Mahatma Gandhi, Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill were nationalists.

Not everyone agreed with D’Souza’s statements.

Ian Kidd, a senior secondary education major at LHU, said, “D’Souza was interesting and articulated his position well, but he had an agenda. He took measured and slightly distorted steps toward his partisanship position.”

Dr. Kimberly Johnson, a university professor of sociology and anthropology, said having D’Souza here to speak “was such a wonderful treat for us.”

“Following the speech, many students expressed that they were glad they attended the event and felt they learned something new.

Many people from the community also came out to hear D’Souza, and conveyed to me that they were thankful we brought him to Lock Haven,” Dr. Johnson said. “I appreciate the support of our administration and staff at the university. Everyone was so helpful in organizing the event and ensuring that attendees would have a nice evening. Over the last few months, I’ve been working with Young America’s Foundation, which sponsored the event, and I am very grateful for their help in bringing a different perspective to campus. I explained the wonderful turnout last night to them and they expressed interest in bringing other conservative speakers to campus in the future.”

NEWS D’Souza speaks to LHU students [Continued from page 2] Another student said, “One of the first things he mentioned was that it has been 14 years since someone with a similar point of view to him, conservatism, has given a lecture at Lock Haven University as a guest speaker.

This stunned me because when I came to college I expected to hear different points of view on a regular basis which would help me gather different opinions and help shape my own worldview, but it seems to me now that I have not been given a variety of opinions and have only heard one side of the argument.”

He added, “Throughout college, I have heard mostly liberal points of view from students and professors, so it was interesting to hear a guest speaker flat out say. ‘your professors have been lying to you.’ I enjoyed hearing his lecture, and I respected that he claimed to only speak factual evidence and not try to claim anything that is untrue. His comments

on diversity and diversity of mind were inspiring because it is important that everyone shape their worldview with information they have studied and learned so that more people engage in higher thinking.

Noah Ellison, is a sophomore business major at LHU and student leader of Young Americans for Liberty, one of the groups that invited D’Souza to campus. The other sponsors were the Lock Haven Sociology Club and the Young America’s Foundation.

Ellison said, “On the university’s website, the mission and visions page lists certain values needed to enrich the institution, and among them is intellectual challenge. What intellectual challenge is there if there is this whole area of thought that we are not experiencing? A lecture by someone like Mr. D’Souza serves the purpose of making us better.”

One on one: An interview with a member of the K.K.K

The Eagle Eye does not support racism or white supremacy. As students, it should be our focus to prepare for our lives after college; Indicatively, there needs to be an accurate understanding of ideas that would resist the existence of educated individuals.

Derek Danneker Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu In August, white supremacist fliers were found in Lock Haven on Bellefonte Ave and other streets near it. On September 28, the Eagle Eye received a letter from the “Loyal White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan.”

The letter began with the following: “Recently we have come under extreme fire for being a hate group. This couldn’t be further from the truth. We follow the teachings of the bible and only wish to keep the white race pure as God intended for his chosen people. Only those who live in ignorance call us hateful. We wish no harm to anyone if they just leave us alone.”

The letter continued to speak about a book that was found offensive to the Klan called “The Slave Players,” and a call for a public outcry on the book’s website forum. The letter with an email address which looked quite personal.

My interest peaked, both by the admission of non-hate within the letter and the letter’s arrival in general, I sent an email to the address asking for an interview. To my surprise, the Klansmen named Roy, responded in the affirmative to an interview over the phone. A day later, I called the number. The voice that greeted me was rough with age overlaid with a smooth southern twang.

Roy said that he believed that white people are god’s chosen people and the jews and the muslims were fallen and tainted people. “Colored people,” as Roy called African Americans, were descendants of Cain, the brother and murder of Abel in the Bible.

Further, he said, “I believe that there is no evidence that they could ever take America over and run with efficiency. They were brought here and they were bred for brute strength to work the fields and plantations.”

Roy explained that he thinks tribalism is inherent in humans. From his observations, even in cities and high schools, people keep to their own race. He said Even the America that condemns us segregates itself.

“Ever had someone you didn’t want to be around?” he said, “We just feel it ‘bout a whole bunch of people.”

I asked Roy what exactly he did for the Klan.

“I hunt down books that come out that are just obviously anti-white or hate white, and I’ve been doing it for years,” he said.

Roy’s particular gall with “the Slave Players” was that the author was white.

“It’s like she turned on her own kind, Roy mentioned. “She calls us neanderthals, for god’s sake. Last time I looked the neanderthals looked a hell of a lot more colored.”

After keying in on a particular book, Roy sends letters to universities and newspapers where the the Ku Klux Klan has a base both in strong conservative ideology and in members.

President Trump’s recent rhetoric has apparently put new life into the Klan.

Roy said, “Since he has received the nomination we’ve expanded dramatically, if not in actual membership, which has expanded quite a bit actually, but we’ve received many donations of people who can’t join because their wife would shoot them or their boss would fire them.”

I mentioned how the K.K.K. has committed crimes in the past.

“What group hasn’t?” said Roy. “I’m not apart of the old racial group that wants to go out and lynch or beat up somebody. Unless they are coming into my house, which a lot of them want to do.”

“I swear to my lord, I do not hate colored folks,” he said.

“We’re much more of a leave-us-alone group, not a hate group.”

Survivor returns for season 35 with the theme: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers Arts & Entertainment Editor tjm1848@lockhaven.edu Survivor is a reality competition television franchise that has been airing on CBS for 17 years and is currently in the second week of the thirty-fifth season. The show is derived from a similar Swedish television series Expedition Robinson, which premiered 3 years earlier than Survivor. Since the show made an appearance in America, it has shown very successful ratings amongst the top ten most watched shows during the first 6 years it aired. The series has been nominated for several Emmy Awards, including winning for Outstanding Sound Mixing in 2001, and Outstanding Special Class Program in 2002. It was also nominated four times for Outstanding Reality-Competition Program when the category was introduced in 2003. In 2007, the series was included in Time Magazine’s list of the top 100 greatest TV shows of all-time. In 2013, TV Guide ranked it at #39 on its list of the “60 Best Series of All Time”. Even the host, Jeff Probst, has won four consecutive awards for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality Competition Program since the award was introduced in 2008.

Now that I’ve convinced you how great the show is, here is what it is about: A group of strangers from around the nation are picked in an application process and brought to an isolated location, with this year being played in the islands of Fiji. The locations are normally tropical islands, and the cinematography job on the show is unbelievably fascinating. But, the living conditions are of the contrary. The contestants are expected to provide themselves with food, fire, and shelter, and that is not an easy task on a deserted island. The contestants then compete in challenges in exchange for rewards like food, comfort, or even small getaways around the area they are located. The competitions could also reward a contestant or tribe with immunity from elimination that night. Every night, the tribe who loses the immunity challenge has to show up at tribal council which is where they gradually vote off one of the members of their tribe until there is only one left. The last person to outwit, outlast, and outplay the rest of the competition is given the title “Sole Survivor” and is awarded the grand prize of $1,000,000.

Each season there is a theme that the contestants must fit into. For example, a few seasons ago it was Millennials vs. Generation X. Obviously, a millennial won but that’s beside the point. This season the theme is Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers. These tribes are different based primarily on how people perceive them in their everyday lives. This season their occupation is what speaks the loudest. For instance, we would expect someone from the hero tribe to have a job like a firefighter, police officer, or an army veteran. The healers, on the other hand would be someone like a therapist, doctor, or even a yoga instructor. Whereas the hustler tribe would have business executives, salespeople, or personal assistants.

Since the first episode of the new season aired last Wednesday, September 27, there were a few contestants that caught my attention. As for the hero tribe, Ashley Nolan, 26, from Satellite Beach, Florida, is a lifeguard.

Her confident demeanor paired with her competitive drive is going to put her in a nice spot in her tribe. She is not too bad to look at too, and I am sure she will play that to her advantage.

On the healers tribe, 24 year old Cole Medders is looking like a solid force to get further in the game. Cole is a wilderness therapy guide in Little Rock, AR, designed for kids that struggle with addiction. With a few alliances under his belt already after only one episode, Cole seems to know how to play the game. He is also a very attractive person with plenty of charm to back it up. A few tribe members of his have even brought up his ability to charm people into doing things with his blue eyes, but will that make or break him?

As for the hustlers tribe, my attention was drawn to a scrawny 23 year old by the name of Ryan Ulrich. For a living, Ryan is a bellhop in North Arlington, NJ, which is how he was labeled a hustler. Although he does not look like the type of person that can carry all your bags from the lobby to your hotel room, his social and mental game is what makes me think he is someone to keep your eye on. He claims that he is just average enough at all the qualities in this game to let him fly under the radar long enough to put him in a good spot in the game.

If you are interested in applying for a chance to play Survivor, they hold open tryouts on Monday, October 23, at the Mohegan Sun in Wilkes Barre, PA, in the Keystone Grand Ballroom. The line starts at 8:00am, and begins letting people in at 10:00am, and trust me, you want to get there early. Last year my roommate, my brother, and I went to try out and we got there at 9:50am and were already numbers 536, 537, 538 in line. We waited in the ballroom for six hours until our numbers got called into a separate room for a one-minute, behind-the-camera audition/interview. It was a really cool experience and we are all waiting patiently for the call that tells us we are going to be on the next season of the show.

Staff Writer knc9459@lockhaven.edu ABC is in its amazing phase where every year during the fall season they introduce a few new shows to their network. On September 25, 2017, ABC showed one of their new and brilliant shows, “The Good Doctor.” It’s an enlightening new show about a young autistic surgeon who also had savant syndrome coming from a small country life moves to a city to join a prestigious hospital in order to save lives. For those who don’t know, autism is a severe disorder that impairs communication and social interaction and savant syndrome is an extraordinary condition where a person demonstrates one or more profound abilities with deficits in the processing part of your brain. In this TV show, the other doctors are very wary of having an “unstable” young man operating on people who they would like to be treated by a more level-headed doctor. Shaun Murphy is the surgeon everyone at the hospital is wary about, but they can’t discount how brilliant he is in the way he saves lives in his extraordinary way.

When you first watch this show, it’ll be something very different and unique which is why I think it’s so good.

Also, the fact that Freddie Highmore, the actor portraying Shaun Murphy, executes the role with a huge hit makes an excellent difference in how people will watch the show. It has a very emotional approach to it so far because of how in the first episode they introduced Murphy and his background, which is a rollercoaster filled with tears. I remember crying about four times in the first episode because of how tragic and touching the backstory is in everything Murphy goes through in a society that doesn’t really understand him and his disorder. “The Good Doctor” appears on every Monday night at 10pm after “Dancing with the Stars” and is already on its second episode as of October 2, 2017, the night it showed. I would recommend catching up quickly before you miss the whole season!

Be a motivator: Listen to understand, not reply Mia Swales

Staff Writer mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Everyone needs a little bit of motivation every now and again. Sometimes it’s us that could use a little push or those around us whether it be someone that we care about and love or the person sitting next to us in class.

Do you ever get on twitter and see some really sad, depressing tweets or maybe even up beat ones? It just so happens to be that the one I saw retweeted the most this week was, “People really don’t know what you’re going through.” Sad to say that just may be the truth, all depending on what kind of person you are. The truth is the person next to you may have just lost someone they love or even just having a bad day and you may never know.

I feel that in a world that has the tendency to be so cold, it’s important to listen to the hearts that beat around you. It’s important that when someone is telling you what they’re going through not to try and one up them and say, “well this happened to me today.” We never really know what someone is feeling or how they’re coping with the stress in their life. Here are somethings to help make someones week better.

Being nice goes along way and even being nice to those who aren’t so nice to us. For some all it takes is an ear. Listen to understand not reply, to be there for everyone and to offer a hand. We have a way to be able to inspire each other if we listen, open our hearts and our minds. We can motivate ourselves and others the power of listening and sometime the power of silence; goes hand in hand.

All it takes sometimes is for someone to say, I hear you and I’m listening. We can each be that person for somebody.

Just say something, you might make someone’s day. You might spark the hope in their eyes and be the light that they need to turn their day around, just say something kind to someone.

Behind the uniform; inside look at ROTC student life Alexis Richard

Cadet Troop Leader ROTC This summer I was selected for a position in Cadet Command’s CTLT program. CTLT stands for “Cadet Troop Leader Training”, and allowed for Junior level Cadets preparing to enter their senior year to join an actual active duty unit to develop their leadership abilities, and develop skills they will use throughout their careers. Most of the slots within this program placed Cadets with regular Army units over a 3-4-week period, but in my case, I was placed with a TRADOC unit stationed in Fort Benning, Georgia. TRADOC (United States Army Training and Doctrine Command) is the US Army command responsible for overseeing and facilitating all training for Army Forces. At first, I was skeptical as to how much I could learn from a unit which was not part of the regular Army, but by the end I took away far more tools and skills then I probably would have if I was sent to any other unit.

For the duration of my time in Fort Benning I was attached to Delta Company, 2-58th Infantry out of Sand Hill. While there I was allowed to participate in all of the training events for recruits at Sand Hill as well as the training events scheduled by Cadet Command. Most of my time at Sand Hill was spent improving my basic marksmanship skills. For five days out of the week I improved my skills with events such as: shooting pop up target, shooting moving targets, and utilizing the M320 Grenade Launcher Module. Aside from marksmanship with the M4 we were expected to become experts with the belt-fed, gas-operated M240 medium machine gun, and the M249 light machine gun.

We were given an introduction to and allowed to operate on a range the: M2 .50 Caliber Machine Gun, the Mk 19 grenade launcher, and the 84-mm unguided, portable, single-shot recoilless smoothbore weapon known as the AT4. As part of infantry basic training, recruits were expected to conduct and complete the Night Infiltration Course. The objective for this training was to secure areas and advance through obstacles after dark, all while simulated explosions and actually machine guns were firing right over head. It created an atmosphere similar to a war scene from any film involving armed conflict, but this was an important part of recruits getting accustomed to the great noise and confusion that come from battle.

This was also in an effort to prevent soldiers from freezing on the battlefield when engaging the enemy as they would be accustomed to the sound of incoming fire. This was the last event I conducted with the recruits, and was one of the events I would not mind doing a second time.

I was provided with two sets of training for CTLT. The first was my training with Delta Company, which I was attached to, but the second was training conducted and facilitated by Cadet command and took me from my unit for a time to look at other aspects of Army training. One such training event was vehicle familiarization, which allowed Cadets like myself to get hands on with some of the Army’s most battle tested combat vehicles. Some of the vehicles that we interacted with was the: the IAV (Interim Armored Vehicle) Stryker armored fighting vehicle, the Bradley Fighting Vehicle (BFV), and my personal favorite the M1 Abrams main battle tank. We weren’t allowed to drive any of these vehicles unfortunately, but we were allowed to operate all other systems and get combatable with the different positions within these vehicles such as the: driver, gunner, loader, and commander. As part of vehicle familiarization, we were brought to one of TRADOC’s many virtual simulation centers. These centers allowed units to conduct training virtually, which in turn put less strain on planning and conducting training for a unit and placed less cost on the Army as there would be no need to provide all the actually equipment necessary to conduct a day of training in the field.

As a part of this training individuals were placed in the gunner seat of an Abrams tank while they engaged four enemy tanks. I was able to score 4 out 4 tanks destroyed on my first go which lead to a few of the tankers facilitating the training to attempt to get me to go the armor route upon commissioning. Beside this form of training with vehicles, I was introduced to the United States Army’s Airborne School.

This is where soldiers are taught the fundamentals of parachuting from airplanes and landing safely. I was able to take on their 34-foot tower which was used to teach soldiers how to exit an aircraft properly while taking advantage of gravity to make for more realistic training. This was also used to identify those with a deathly fear of heights, as a result those who are unable to complete this event at 34 feet would not be able to complete an actual jump at 1250 feet.

During my training I was introduced to the commander of Delta Company who I found to be a very knowledgeable CPT (Captain). He was supported by an experienced and dedicated 1SG (First Sergeant). They took both me under their wings during those three weeks with CPT Cash introducing me to the officer side of commanding an element, while 1SG Brew made sure I understood the day to day responsibilities of an NCO and how an NCO-Officer relationship was supposed to look. They both

had the great responsibility of providing the Army with the greatest infantrymen in the world, and I had the privilege of observing the progress of the first gender integrated element entering infantry basic training.

One of the most important takeaways from the CPT’s side of training was the importance of taking responsibility. He taught me that as an officer I would be responsible for the completion of a variety of missions, while ensuing my soldiers were prepared in advance to carry out these missions.

He made it clear that at any given time, I could be responsible for millions of dollars’ worth of military equipment which dwarfed the current responsibility I have over around 500 dollars’ worth of equipment as a Cadet. 1SG Brew made it clear that as an officer I would be expected to be a “jack-of-all-trades” when it comes to duties outside the role of an officer.

He used an example pertaining to a leader expecting his/her soldiers to do something they couldn’t do, or expecting their soldiers to go somewhere they wouldn’t go themselves. This resonated with me and pushed me to place more emphasis on learning and carrying out my duties according to doctrine, while gaining the knowledge required to command elements efficiently, not only as Cadet but as a new officer commanding my unit first.

The puppy I couldn’t handle Jessie Smith

Staff writer jcs2355@lockhaven.edu One of the most empowering aspects of college is the freedom that comes from not living under your parent’s roof. As a child growing up I know one of the most frequent questions I asked my parents was “Can we get a dog? Pleeeaase?” I knew the answer, and it was always an easy no.

In my third year at Lock Haven I woke up one morning and said to myself, “I’m going to get a dog.” I have always been a dog person, even seeing a dog on the street will make me weak in the knees. But, I was in for a rude awakening.

That same morning, I drove to Williamsport and paid fifty dollars for a puppy I found on Craigslist. Goodbye old Jesse, hello dad Jesse. I was obligated to walk, feed, and clean up after an animal which I hardly knew. I was hardly qualified to take care of myself, let alone something else. But, here I was, with a puppy which was sweet, gentle, and didn’t know better than to poop in the house. It was like I became a parent overnight.

The next few months of my life were filled with stress, eaten homework (literally), and coming home after class to a puppy that had been cooped up all day. Don’t get me wrong they were also filled with moments of pure joy and a very rewarding feeling when the poop ended up outside. But this, on top of poor habits and college classes became too much for my pea-brained mind to handle and I resentfully asked my parents to adopt my cute but poor decision.

Luna is actually one of the best poor decisions I’ve ever made. It was a lesson that showed me how immature I was, as well as what it takes to be a parent. She still lives at my parent’s home and it turns out she is a great fit for them. Lucky for me it actually all worked out.

I’m extremely thankful for Luna but in hindsight it is clear that a puppy in college is far from ideal, at least for me. I learned college should be more about learning about yourself and meeting new people and less about showing off an adorable puppy to every girl on campus.

However, I do think there are appropriate pets to have while you’re in college. These are animals like, fish, cats, hamsters, maybe even some of the ants crawling in the pizza box you still haven’t thrown out from three weeks ago. Whatever it is, make sure you find an animal that requires little attention, because as a student, it is much more important to have your attention focused on learning and growing.

Don’t keep the K.K.K. in the dark The Eagle Eye does not support racism or white supremacy. As students, it should be our focus to prepare for our lives after college; Indicatively, there needs to be an accurate understanding of ideas that would resist the existence of educated individuals.

I’m sitting on my porch and he’s just giving me hell,” where I humanized him in my mind. In that moment I could picture him as someone’s grandfather who was holding on to outmoded beliefs that they thought were legitimate.

Let’s ignore for a moment the egregious nature of his beliefs, and take the simple compulsion of Roy’s ideas. Milton Friedman, the Libertarian Economist said, “The most harm of all is done by those who are absolutely sure of the purity of their intentions, heaven preserve us from the sincere reformer who knows what’s good for you and will have you do it whether you want it or not.” to force your morals onto another individual is fundamentally flawed.

The separation of church and state is a necessary feature of the U.S. Constitution.

A very few amount of people live in the world of the evil “Colored”-as Roy says- people, most intelligent people can put together that “people should not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character,” as Martin Luther King said. Therefore, the most sordid of Roy’s claims is that he isn’t racist because racism means hate toward another due to their skin color. This is a strawman argument, Roy is twisting the word racist to mean something it does not. The definition of racism is applying characteristics to all individuals of a coordinating skin color. The Ku Klux Klan is demonstrably and obviously racist.

Roy claims to not be “apart of the old radical group that wants to go out

and lynch or beat up somebody.” Why remain apart of it then? To keep people afraid. The largest reason I decided to publish an interview with a hate groupand the K.K.K. is a hate group- is because condemning without speaking to them gives the K.K.K. the ability to incite fear. People should understand the weakness of radical identitarian ideology and know that these people are fragile. Keeping the K.K.K. in the dark, keeps people afraid.

Additionally, Roy’s genetic knowledge leaves much to be wanting. A 200 year period of partially selective breeding- black african slaves certainly weren’t only bred purposefully or for specific qualities- is not long enough to make a lasting difference in the population especially with a continual influx of a genetically diverse population. There has not even been enough time to develop distinct species of humans says Dr. J Craig Venter who is the Celera Genomics Corporation in Rockville, Maryland. He has said, “Races is a social concept, not a scientific one, we all evolved in the last 100,000 years from the same small number of tribes that migrated out of Africa and colonized the world.”

There is still a reason to be weary of the right wing, however. Jordan Peterson, a psychologist at University of Toronto, has done several papers relating personality to political affiliation. He found that people who align with the Left are likely to be higher in openness- I’m speaking now about the big 5 personality traits within psychology- while the Right is much more likely to be higher in conscientiousness. A byproduct of conscientiousness is higher interpersonal disgust. Another paper he’s published is relating infectious diseases with authoritarian and fascistic regimes which has shown a .7 correlation coefficient, which is nearly unheard of within social sciences.

Peterson says that this is important to know because people on the far right aren’t made anxious by people different from themselves, they’re disgusted “and you burn things that disgust you,” Peterson has said.

No, Colin: Philadelphia is not the dumbest sports city in America Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm362@lockhaven.edu Fox Sports 1 national radio host Colin Cowherd went on a seemingly unwarranted rant on Tuesday afternoon, calling Philadelphia “the dumbest sports city in America.”

This is one way to fire me up because it couldn’t be any further from the truth.

It all starts with the love affair that Cowherd has for ex-Eagles head coach Andy Reid, now doing wonders in Kansas City. Cowherd ripped Philadelphia to shreds for running Reid out of town after his 14th season while using an inaccurate and completely flawed argument.

There is no debating what a great coach Reid is. He is one of the top coaches in the game. But Colin, after 14 years and not one Super Bowl, an 8-8 and 4-12 final two seasons, respectively, is not good enough.

We ran him out of town because it was time. We ran him out of town because winning divisions, like Reid did, simply wasn’t good enough after 14 years. Losing four NFC Championship games and a Super Bowl wasn’t good enough, either.

The first factual inaccuracy that Cowherd pointed out was that Reid won four NFC Championships, and that wasn’t good enough in Philadelphia. He lost four. Get it right.

I guess in some places winning the division and calling it a year is good enough. I don’t know how, but that must be the way it is.

Cowherd then went onto say that Philadelphia ran Terry Francona out of town, an MLB manager who has had 14 straight winning seasons since leaving the Phillies.

Oh, but Colin, you failed to mention Francona’s record as manager of the

Phillies. His four seasons went as such: 68-94, 75-87, 77-85, 65-97.

Wow -- really big numbers being put up. And guess what? Francona went on to manage better teams in the future. I could manage the 2004 Red Sox or the 2017 Cleveland Indians to a World Series.

Lastly, Cowherd went on to rip Philadelphia for trying to run Villanova head basketball coach Jay Wright out of town. This is where I drew the line.

I don’t know where in the heck he got this information, but in his rant, Cowherd stated how Wright took over the program from legendary coach Rollie Massimino. But the funny part is that Wright wasn’t even the coach after Massimino, it was Steve Lappas until 2001.

Arguments like these are so click-bait worthy that it shouldn’t be worth a response. I should not be wasting my time with this, but here I am.

This is another example of a national outsider trying to distort the fanbase of Philadelphia. It is another example of a national outsider who has never stepped foot in Philadelphia, mind you, too. And I will defend this to the endth degree.

It would come across as though Cowherd woke up and decided that it was going to be a rip Philadelphia day. His ratings must be hurting.

Journalism does not represent going on rants with factual inaccuracies.

Journalism is all about the facts. Colin had none.

Cowherd fittingly ended his rant with a quip that put me over the top.

“Philadelphia was the nation’s capital and you blew that too,” he said.

I can’t believe he didn’t bring up throwing snowballs at Santa Clause, but he did find a way to mention how he can’t trust a city with a jail cell underneath their football stadium.

Right -- and I can’t trust a news outlet that distorts places like Philadelphia with zero factual representation at all.

Do your due dilligence next time, Colin.

Be nice; go out and make someone’s day Mia Swales Staff Writer mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Everyone needs a little bit of motivation every now and again. Sometimes it’s us that could use a little push or those around us whether it be someone that we care about and love or the person sitting next to us in class.

Do you ever get on twitter and see some really sad, depressing tweets or maybe even up beat ones? It just so happens to be that the one I saw retweeted the most this week was, “People really don’t know what you’re going through.” sad to say but more often than not that just may be the truth, all depending on what kind of person you’re. The truth is the person next to you may have just lost someone they love or even just having a bad day and you may never know.

I feel that in a world that has the tendency to be so cold it’s important to listen to the hearts that beat around you. It’s important that when someone

is telling you what they’re going through not to try and one up them and say, “well this happened to me today.” We never really know what someone is feeling or how they’re coping with the stressors in their life.

Being nice goes along way and even being nice to those who aren’t so nice to us. For some all it takes is an ear. “listen to understand not reply,” to be there for everyone and to offer a hand. We have a way to be able to inspire each other if we listen, open our hearts and our minds. We can motivate ourselves and others the power of listening and sometime the power of silence; goes hand in hand. All it takes sometimes is for someone to say, I hear you and I’m listening. We can each be that person for somebody.

Just say something, you might make someone’s day, you might revive hope in their eyes, just say something.

Matt Guiod Graduate Assistant mag3656@lockhaven.edu The LHU men’s and women’s basketball teams are excited to kick off their 2017-18 season and will do so on Wednesday October 11 with Fieldhouse Frenzy. Doors will open at 7:00 p.m. and start time is 7:30 p.m.

Come meet your 2017-18 basketball team as there will be contests, prizes, scrimmages and a dunk contest. Performances by Diamonds N Da Ruff, The LHU Cheerleaders and NoLabel Royalty will also take place.

The first 150 students will receive a free t-shirt and every student will have the chance to win snap specs which will also be given away.

For the second consecutive match, the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team got a big goal from a rookie and the Bald Eagles upset a top-25 team. Sat, Sept. 30, freshman Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown H.S.) scored in the 62nd minute and the Bald Eagles knocked off No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan (6-3-1), 1-0 on the road.

On Wednesday (Sept. 27), freshman Luca Zannoni(Sernaglia Della Battalia, Italy/Marco Casagrande) scored the only goal of the match and the Bald Eagles upset No. 9 and previously unbeaten Millersville, 1-0. The win marked LHU’s first win over a top-25 team since 2011.

With the win, Lock Haven improved to 6-2-3 overall.

After Lock Haven and West Virginia Wesleyan went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0, Sibiski provided the game’s only goal – his team-leading fourth of the season – in the 62nd minute.

Sibiski is one of several true-freshmen who have been nothing short of fantastic this season and through the first 11 matches of the season, the youth movement has been a big part of the story behind the Bald Eagles success. Eleven of Lock Haven’s 20 goals scored this season have come from freshmen.

Ben Wilson (Boswell, Pa./Conemaugh Township) was credited with the assist on Sibiski’s goal. Wilson, a junior, has been a key substitute for LHU and today was no different as he picked up the helper on the contest’s only goal. Wilson’s strong midfield-play also set up only goal in Wed, Sept. 27 thrilling upset of Millersville.

Senior goalkeeper Troy Teresak (Pompton Plains, N.J./DePaul Catholic) was brilliant and finished with 10 saves as he recorded his second straight shutout vs. a nationally-ranked team.

After back-to-back 1-0 wins over nationally-ranked teams, LHU second-year head coach Patrick Long was quick to credit the defensive unit. All season, despite several new faces in-and-out of the starting rotation, the group has been organized, calm and dominant. Today was more of the same as all the defenders were on top of their game in a full 90-minute effort.

Teresak named PSAC Athlete of the Week Matt Guiod Graduate Assistant mag3656@lockhaven.edu Senior goalkeeper Troy Teresak (Pompton Plains, N.J./Depaul Catholic) of the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team has been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Athlete of the Week.

Teresak shares this week’s honors with Seton Hill’s Henrik Berg.

The LHU men’s soccer team went 2-0 last week with both wins coming by way of upsets vs. top-25 teams. Teresak was a big reason behind those victories as he combined for 14 saves in back-to-back 1-0 shutouts.

Teresak and LHU opened the week with a huge PSAC match vs. Millersville. Teresak finished with four saves including two sensational stops in the second half as LHU knocked off No. 9 and previously unbeaten Millersville. The win also marked the first over perennial PSAC and NCAA Division II regional power Millersville since 2011. Ironically enough it’s also the last time LHU downed a top-15 team. Lock Haven’s last win over a top-10 team came in 2005.

On Saturday at No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan, Teresak was the story as he turned in a 10-save effort in the 1-0 road win. The 10 saves are the fourth-most for a single-game in LHU since 1998.

LHU will return to the pitch on Wednesday October, 4 when they travel to take on East Stroudsburg University at 6:30 p.m.

Football drops PSAC tilt at Ship, 37-6 Jayson Moyer Managing Editor jpm362@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University Football team (0-5, 0-2) fell 37-6 at Shippensburg (5-0, 2-0) on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC clash.

True-freshman running back Chantz Swartz rushed for 54 yards on 10 carries to lead the Lock Haven offense.

“It is predicated on how their week of practices goes,” said Lock Haven head coach Dave Taynor when asked if the running back position will vary each week on game-to-game matchups.

“All three of those guys [Swartz, Ralph Hyland, John Ford] have contributed to us throughout the year. We’ve had a couple minor dings in the group, too, but nothing major.”

Sophomore wide receiver David Ankey caught two passes for 48 yards and quarterback Jimmy Strickland passed for 69 yards and an interception. The Bald Eagles continued to use a twoquarterback system which saw freshman Kyle Knight also see time.

“It comes down to staying to our process and executing,” said Taynor, whose team is looking for an offensive spark.

“We’ve got to continue to improve on execution.”

The offense continued to roll for Shippensburg, with quarterback Paul Zapoticky throwing for 180 yards and two touchdowns.

He also added 42 yards on the ground.

Marcus Lominy rushed for 65 yards and a touchdown, while Colin McDermott also had 47 yards on the ground in a well-balanced Red Raider attack.

Kyle Haines caught five passes for 79 yards and two touchdowns.

The Bald Eagles will host Cheyney on Saturday which will mark only the second home game for Lock Haven of the season.

Cheyney currently sits at 1-4 and 0-2 in the PSAC. This will mark the 21st meeting all-time between Lock Haven and Cheyney, with the Bald Eagles leading the series 19-1.

Lock Haven took last season’s matchup 51-12 and have won five straight in the series.

“Our biggest concern is making sure that we take care of us,” said Taynor.

“If we execute and take care of the ball, then we give ourselves an opportunity to be successful.”
