One of the largest and oldest trees on main campus split during a windless Tuesday night, leading many students to question the reason for its faltering. Matt Guiod, a second year grad student sport administration said that he was glad it didn’t happen during the day. Guiod went on to note that per the snapchats he received, the tree split around midnight. The tree that has been growing its roots near the amphitheater is identified as Red Oak by Joby Topper, Stevenson library director, who has written about that very tree in the Hemlock News. “Their cousin, the white oak, can be 400-500 years old,” said Topper. “But Red Oaks don’t typically age longer than 200 years.” The supposed ancient by many students, the tree may be still young according to Topper; he believes that the tree was planted sometime in 1915 which he deduced by going through hundreds of papers. He also believes that it looks older due it’s swelling above the trunk. “It’s misshapen, it’s not your average red oak in appearance,” said Mr. Topper. A noticeable layer of blackened wood can be seen inside the cavity formed from the large downed branch. “If you look on the side of the truck, it looks like there’s some sort of fungus,” Topper said. The branch, which was large enough to be a tree itself, reached to the sidewalk connecting the pavilion to the amphitheater. Lock Haven University Maintenance only managed to clear the limbs blocking the sidewalk. They lack the tools to clear such a cumbersome branch.

4 President Fiorentino to retire in March Eagle Eye Staff

Dinesh D’Souza, a political commentator and former advisor to President Ronald Reagan, will speak in Sloan Auditorium on Thursday night at 7 p.m. His topic is “The Diversity Myth: Surrendering Freedom in Exchange for Safe Spaces.” `D’Souza is a conservative author whose books have tackled hotbutton political issues and targeted social movements. His film “2016: Obama’s America” was based in his 2010 “New York Times” best-selling book, “The Roots of Obama’s Rage.” In 2016 he produced a book and a documentary film, “Hillary’s America,” which offer his view of the history of the Democratic Party. Just released in recent weeks is “The Big Lie” in which he skewers the political Left for its use of fascism as an epithet to label the grassroots movement that carried President Trump into the executive office. Born in Bombay, D’Souza became a naturalized citizen in 1991. He is a graduate of Dartmouth University and a former president of King’s College. He has appeared as an pundit on “Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher” and Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report.” The event is sponsored by the several campus clubs, including Young Americans for Liberty, the Lock Haven Sociology Club, and Young America’s Foundation.

D’Souza to speak at Lock Haven U. Eagle Eye Staff
lockhaveneagleeye@gmail.com LHU president Dr. Michael Fiorentino, Jr. recently announced his plan to retire in March 2018 after six years of service at the university. In an email message to faculty and staff, he cited his desire to spend more time with family and friends and his intention “to enjoy the time for new adventures that retirement provides.” Fiorentino oversaw many campus projects that produced striking physical changes during his tenure at the university. These include the replacement of Russell Hall and Sullivan Hall with the greenspace University Commons central to main campus and the construction of the University’s science center on East Campus. His administration also facilitated the construction of Fairview Suites and the re-assignment of various student services to Ulmer Hall, to create a central hub for student access. In the academic realm, Fiorentino’s administration established the current three college structure and supported a streamlined revision of the general educational curriculum. New academic programs were also introduced, including environmental studies, actuarial studies, clinical mental health counseling and health care management. Fiorentino came to LHU in 2011 from Fitchburg State University, where he served as Executive Vice President of Academic Affairs. His nearly 40-year career in higher education includes several years as Associate Vice President for Academic Affairs at Framingham State University. He was LHU’s 14th president. If you don’t have any plans for next weekend, look no further, because the Millbrook Playhouse is hosting their 10th annual Brews in the Barn on October 7th starting at 4:00pm and ending at 8:00pm. The event will feature many local craft breweries, home beer brewers, and distinguished national brands from W.R. Hickey and Bald Eagle Distributors for anybody over the age of 21 to enjoy. If you are looking to expand or improve your beer tasting palate, this is the place to be. I know one of the home beer brewers, and he told me he would be bringing back his peanut butter and jelly IPA because of popular demand. The event will also feature hand rolled cigars, beer related gadgets, great local food, and live music performed by Rusty Foulke from Hybrid Ice! There is also a chili cook off with over $1,000 in cash prizes for the winners! What’s better than chili to put on top of the craft beers you will be drinking? Yeah, I couldn’t think of anything either. Millbrook is still looking for commercial and non-commercial contestants, so please contact Adam Coleman at 570-263-0549, if you are interested in being part of the chili cook off. Tickets are on sale for $40.00 and that gives you full access to all the beer vendors, chili tasting, and the live entertainment. Usually, when I sit down and try to come up with my top five favorite sports movies, the movies listed will change on a weekly basis. It all depends on what kind of mood I’m in. I’m one of those people who tend to watch the same movies over and over again, but there are so many superb movies that revolve around sports. For the sports fans here at Lock Haven University, here are five selections that might have you enjoy a cold, cloudy Tuesday afternoon more than just sitting on the couch.
1. The Entire “Rocky” Series (1976-2006) Even if you are not a sports fan, the Rocky series is something that should ring a bell. Based in Philadelphia, Sylvester Stallone plays a no-name, left-handed boxer named Rocky Balboa. “Rocky I” was released in 1976 with the final movie, “Rocky Balboa,” being released in 2006. From the first film all the way to the sixth, the storyline is off the charts. It is extremely easy to follow and once you get past the first film, you will notice how everything ties in with each other. “Rocky Balboa” may have been the most fitting ending to a film series that I have ever seen. 2. “The Rookie” (2002) “The Rookie” is my all-time favorite movie of my childhood. ball story of a high school science teacher and baseball coach who throws major heat. Eventually, Jim Morris, the character played by Quaid, finds his way to the Major Leagues. “The Rookie” is based on a true-story of pitcher Jim Morris, who had a brief stint in the MLB from 19992000. 3. “Miracle” (2004) I don’t know if I have ever watched a sports film that represented an entire country better than “Miracle.” This film covers the magical journey of the 1980 United States Men’s Olympic Hockey Team, which defied all odds to win the gold medal at Lake Placid, New York. Kurt Russell plays head coach Herb Brooks, whose tough, demanding style of coaching actually ended up being the main reason for the gold
medal victory. I remember getting chills when I saw “Miracle” at the movies in the fourth grade. Mustwatch. 4. “The Bad News Bears” (1976) There are three words that can properly describe “The Bad News Bears”: What a classic. Thinking back to when I played little league -- which I cared about and took seriously -- but a vast majority of the community I played in would look forward to eating hot dogs after the game than winning. And at ages 8,10, and 12, what else would you expect? That’s why this film can relate to all of us. It takes you back, while also causing you to tear up from laughter. I don’t want to give too much away, but this is a no-doubt, top-five selection for me.

For the past two to three months, Netflix has been removing a whole bunch of movies and shows, some of which are considered quite popular. It is believed that companies like FOX, FX, and Disney are removing their content from Netflix in an attempt to build their own streaming platforms. In October, we have a total of 43 shows and movies being removed and their all set on different days of the month. If you see anything on this list that you want to watch or need to finish, jump on Netflix and enjoy yourselves. Hope this information was super helpful and give a shout if you would like to hear more information on the Netflix deletion rampage. The Voice is back, with a new coach Tanner Meeker
Arts & Entertainment Editor tjm1848@lockhaven.edu Get ready to hear some amazing talent as we return to the 13th season of The Voice on NBC! The Voice is an American reality television show where unsigned artists battle to win votes from the viewers. The viewers vote by telephone, Internet, SMS text, and iTunes Store purchases of the audio-recorded artists’ vocal performances. The contestants can be as young as 13 years old since season 13, and the winner receives $100,000 and a record deal with Universal Music Group. The series hosts a panel of four coaches whose job is to turn around for the artist during the “blind auditions” where their back is turned to “the voice”. The coaches job is simple, to guide their teams of selected artists throughout the season and try to make it as far as they can with any of their artists. If the contestants can get a chair to turn around, then they automatically advance to the next round. If more than one turns around, then it is the coaches job to fight for that contestant, and it is the contestants job to pick the coach they want to move on to the next round with. From there, the contestants go through several battle rounds and individual performances in an attempt to captivate viewers across the nation. On May 10, 2017, NBC announced that Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson will be joining as a coach alongside Miley Cyrus and regulars Adam Levine and Blake Shelton on the show. Jennifer won The Voice UK last year, and is now gunning for the victory in the US. “Jennifer is an extraordinary vocal talent and one of the premier voices of our time. She embodies the experience, expertise, positivity and sheer talent that “The Voice” stands for,” said Paul Telegdy, NBC’s president of NBC’s alternative and reality group. “Her exceptional skills as a singer and actress have extended to film, television and Broadway, which makes her an incredible addition and a natural fit for our show.” Hudson got her start on a very similar platform on the third season of American Idol in 2004. Although she came in 7th place, she scored a huge role in Dreamgirls in 2006, for which she won a Golden Globe and an Oscar. Then she made an album and won a Grammy for it in 2008. Needless to say, the other coaches are really going to have to step it up if they want to compete with this powerhouse of an artist.
Blake Shelton and Adam Levine, who have been known to provoke and pick on each other over the past few seasons, but this season they have promised to dial it back a little bit this year. It seems like they both know that it won’t last long but it is probably necessary considering Miley is on a mission to win the whole thing, while Jennifer Hudson has proved to be a force to reckon with after winning The Voice UK. Here’s a few talents to keep your eye on from the first night of the blind auditions: Chris Weaver (29 – Long Island, New York) Kicking off the night right with a fourchair turn, Chris Weaver performed “Try a Little Tenderness” by Otis Redding. Chris’s musical history includes singing at his church as a worship leader by day, and being a drag queen performer by night. These two completely opposite experiences gives Chris an unusual and intriguing vibe. He’s also done something no other contestant has ever done before. Chris actually performed for Jennifer Hudson during a party for her theatrical run in The Color Purple, where she threw her shoe at him because he was so good, (where they come from, getting a shoe thrown at you is a huge compliment). It didn’t take long for Jennifer to turn her chair for Chris and not long after that she took Miley’s shoe from her and threw it at him again, probably remembering who he was. So he immediately has an interest in working with Jennifer. Although, Miley seems like she could be a good coach to help him find himself. He is not used to performing as Chris, as he mostly performs as his drag queen character, so he is looking to build his own stage identity, and Miley claims she can do that. On the other hand, his falsetto skills would be a good match for Adam to work on, and Blake has won with various types of artists in past years. But in the end, he sticks with his gut, and goes with Jennifer Hudson as his coach.

Since she lives in a small town among her Native American Tribe, she doesn’t have very much experience on stage, but that didn’t seem to matter as the coaches began fighting over her. Jennifer Hudson at one point even said, “I thought I knew music until you just came out here and did that.” But Miley took it to the next level and went up on stage and made Brooke feel her chest because her heart was beating so fast. Miley’s passion for her artists is what ended up convincing Brooke to go Team Miley. After Brooke and Miley went backstage, Adam Levine said, “That girl’s going to win the whole thing.” (He’s usually right about these instincts after saying the same thing about Chris Blue early last season, who then went on to win)
Esera Tuaolo (48 – Minneapolis, Minnesota) While most retired NFL players try to stick with the sports business, Esera decided to chase his dream. After being through a lot in the past couple years, from retiring from his football career to coming out as gay to his children, he never lost sight of his passion for singing. He sang “Rise Up” by Andra Day and managed to get Blake Shelton and Jennifer Hudson to turn

10 The Essence of Jiu-Jitsu Jessie Smith

Staff Writer Jcs2355@lockhaven.edu A year and a half ago I was a 21-year-old college student, whose habits consisted of playing xbox, eating salt and vinegar chips, and excessive use of drugs and alcohol. There is no doubt that my physical, emotional, and spiritual health was at an all-time low, and so was my happiness. Every day was a struggle to get along with myself. The voice inside my head was screaming to stop, turn around, but the train of poor-decision making had built up momentum and was veering down the wrong path. One day a friend told me he was going to an MMA Club meeting. I’ve always been an avid fan of the UFC and grew up wrestling, so I thought I’d give it a try! That one night and one decision to step out of my comfort zone ended up being the one decision that turned my life around. I had found something I was truly interested in, and it was beneficial! From the MMA Club I was introduced to a legitimate gym in downtown Lock Haven. I began going to classes and soon I found the train of poor decision making was slowing down and was actually building momentum in the other direction. Instead of sitting on the couch all night, I found myself feeling obligated to go to the classes, so I did. I must admit, it did not happen all at once. During the week I would go to practice, but once the weekend came around the excessive partying would return as well. However, after a year and a half of training, specifically in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, I now find very little satisfaction in getting “turnt up” on the weekend and instead now enjoy waking up early and feeling fresh to work out. You may be thinking, “What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?” It is submission grappling, and also one
of the most popular martial arts in the world. All martial arts teach principles like discipline, sacrifice, longevity, and prudence, but what makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu different is the application of knowledge. At the end of every class there is a designated time for sparring. Or as we call it, “rolling”. This is the time to apply the technique you learned in class to a live situation. In jiujitsu there are no head strikes (no brain damage), and when you feel you’re in danger (ie. about to get put to sleep, or someone is about to break one of your bones/joints) you simply just tap on your opponent, and they release you. It is a fascinating game to play once you’ve got it down. In order to be competitive during this time, you need to be living a life that enables your body to move in this way every day. That means fueling your body effectively and taking care of it appropriately. In other words, eating right, and keeping up with your hygiene. If you fail to do either one of those simple habits, it will make training, and your life, that much more miserable. Jiu-Jitsu teaches lifelong lessons. But more than that, it teaches you how to protect yourself intelligently and how to live a growth-promoting lifestyle. I truly believe everybody in the world should understand how to defend themselves in a hand to hand combative situation, and from my experience, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu will teach you just that and more. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu has taught me so many valuable lessons that I carry with me everyday.

Balancing their faith and classes while surviving everyday life things leaves many wondering how do they do it. How do they strive through the many challenges that college throws at them and still remain in good academic standing, while still holding fast to their faith? Sierra Saunders, 23 Senior and president of Full Gospel Fellowship attending lock haven sat down to help give us an inside view into her life as a young person of faith. When I spoke to her about how she keeps up with being Christian and facing temptation, and what she does to balance this she had a lot to say. Kiara: “How do you start your day and what is your day like” Sierra: “My days are very busy” she laughs “ I start my day off by reading a quote or scripture to start things positive. It gets me motivated and puts me in the right mind set to have a good day. i prioritize my days usually week by week because there’s so much going on with me. I try to stay positive and pray and keep god first. Staying on top of my school work and internship is a must. Cadet shares ACE Internship experience Marlene Yi Guess writer Mmy4844@lockhaven.edu One of the major requirements in order to commission as a second lieutenant through the Army ROTC program for all Cadets is to complete Advanced Camp in Fort Knox, Kentucky. Cadets are typically sent in the summer between the end of their junior year and beginning of their senior year of college. Not only are Cadets challenged physically and mentally, but they are asked to demonstrate their leadership skills acquired over the course of their training at their home universities. Throughout these 31 days, Cadets faced required tests while attending Advanced Camp such as leadership confidence courses, Tactical Combat Casualty Care, CBRN training, basic rifle marksmanship, day and night land navigation, and plenty of foot marches. While at camp, Cadets are also given opportunities to demonstrate their leadership skills through rotating time in the various platoon level leadership positions as a: Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, or Platoon Leader. This time is invaluable in assessing a Cadet’s ability to lead soldiers in the future, as well as preparing them for their senior year as they return to university to assist in preparing the next years seniors for their time at advanced camp. Advanced Camp gave me the opportunity to learn more about myself as a soldier and a leader. I overcame obstacles I would have never expected to face alone. I was able to rely on my fellow Cadets as we gained a shared understanding prior to beginning our days in the field. This made my time as platoon leader much more effective. Prior to going to Advanced Camp, I was hesitant about many of the expectations that cadre would be looking at such as my tactical leadership and the 12 mile foot march requirement. I was nervous about the fact that we were all being graded individually. Despite that, the people in my platoon helped assist me through those points in order to help me succeed. They helped to show me that I can overcome stressful environments and think quickly under pressure, because I had
my whole platoon on my side to assist me, I never felt alone. As platoon leader in the field, I shared my responsibilities amongst the leadership and learned to trust them. With this shared responsibility and overall trust, we were able to successfully complete our mission. From these experiences, I have learned that in the U.S. Army I am never alone. When I commission I know that I will faithfully fulfill my mission as well as my duty to those men and women under my command. This summer, I was incredibly fortunate to participate in the Advanced Cyber Education Internship (ACE) immediately after Advanced Camp graduation. The ACE internship is hosted every summer for 40 lucky ROTC Cadets of all branches at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, The Air Force Institute of Technology, and takes place over 4 weeks. The ACE Internship consisted of 4 different phases, all of which revolved around cyber space. Each day was completely different from the previous, with a new professor or subject matter expert to teach us what they know about cyber security and cyber offense. At the end of each phase, Cadets would attend secret security level briefings revolving around the Departments of Defense’s Cyber Mission Plan.

The draft should be banned instead of transgender troops Roxanne Aretta Opinions Editor rab484@lockhaven.edu Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness; the three rights every person in this country is guaranteed. Supposedly. The Declaration of Independence was signed nearly 250 years ago, and after many decades of ongoing social reform, these promises are still nothing more than empty words for many. Especially certain groups of people in America. Men still must sign up for Selective Service on their 18th birthdays. The Selective Service Agency has the job of randomly choosing men to be drafted for the military in times of need. A man still has to vow his life, one of the three things the government is supposed to protect, so that the government may dispose of it whenever power is threatened. But some of us do not think it is right to murder people for the sole sake of patriotism and defending our status of being the most powerful country in the world. Ending someone’s life for such selfish purposes is despicable. Filling an American’s mind with glorified lies and then forcing them to enter war and kill other people for global dominance should be intolerable. Unfortunately, it is encouraged. Kim Jung Un is not wrong in calling us imperialists. Since July 4th of 1776, our government’s focus has been to take over other countries’ lands and boast about the power we use
to do so. President Trump is no different, and will use whatever means are necessary to impose power. But Trump has shown that there is no longer a need for men to sign up for Selective Service. America’s military is already the second largest in the world, surpassed only by China. The 1.3 million

Trump has taken away happiness from transgender troops. Furthermore, he has taken away freedom from all transgender people. We tend to connect more with those who have the same pigmentation as us. The truth is, genetically we may have closer DNA to those who may have a lighter and or darker pigment than us, meaning someone outside of our race. So really why is there discrimination? Why is there racial profiling? Why is there so much hate? Why is there so much injustice? What really is the reason for it, because technically regardless of skin color “we are more alike my friend than we are unalike.” Within the blood and all of the cells that flow in our veins. Now in the news we see a big uproar of either agreeing or disagreeing with athletes kneeling during the national anthem. We also hear about President Donald Trumps anger about athletes
kneeling during the national anthem wishing owners of NFL teams would “fire” the men that “disrespect” the flag. We hear, more often than not, about police brutality. Almost as if our America has taken 10 steps forward just to take a century’s worth backwards. Malcolm X once said, “A man who stands for nothing will fall for anything.” That is what these men and women are doing. Not only exercising the 1st Amendment right but they’re standing against hate. They’re standing (kneeling) with locked arms and fist in the air as a unit for unity and for the sake of our land and our peace. Here we are at war with other countries but here we are at war within our own as well. We are amongst a world of darkness and hate and we must come together as a whole and drop the hate. If we aren’t loving we aren’t living. If we sit side by side judging one another, discriminating based on the color of one’s skin, the outside of our beings then really what are we
doing? What are we living for? How are we living in a world of color and hate? We’ve got stand for something and not only stand for something but stand together. One isn’t more superior than the other looks, economic status and so forth. We must move outside the box and look inside. Look at the hearts that beat around us. Look at the beauty, the greatness in the lives around us. It’s not about you, it’s not about me, it’s about us. Us as a unit. U.S as the the United States. We must stand for something and stand against injustice, push the system, remold the system the right way, remold the system on equality not superiority. Seattle’s city council voted months ago to pass a law that raises the price of pop substantially. The idea behind it is to decrease obesity in the city. According to the Center for Disease Control, the amount of obese people in the Emerald City is 55 percent. Obesity leads to health problems such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. The law might make some mad, but it aims to do a lot of good in a very progressive city that sees many firsts. Not only will people stray from paying tons of money for pop, but it might also reduce the amount of plastic bottle usage. Although Seattle is a huge advocate of recycling, if other cities and counties not-so liberal, such as Oklahoma City, took up this pop law, huge effects might be seen. Less plastic pop bottles would be bought and therefore, not thrown into the streets or end up in landfills and oceans. This would prevent harm to ocean life and harm to or own health.

Freshman Luca Zannoni (Sernaglia Della Battalia, Italy/Marco Casagrande) scored his first collegiate goal in the 29th minute and it proved to be the difference for the Lock Haven University men’s soccer team as the Bald Eagles upset ninth-ranked and previously unbeaten Millersville University (6-1-1, 2-1-0), 1-0 in huge Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match. The win moved LHU to 5-2-3 overall and pushed the Bald Eagles to 3-1-1 in PSAC action. Lock Haven also remained unbeaten at home on the season at 4-0-2. The win also marked the first over perennial PSAC and NCAA Division II regional power Millersville since 2011. Ironically enough it’s also the last time LHU downed a top-15 team. Lock Haven’s last win over a top-10 team came in 2005. Overall it was a balanced match that featured two of the PSAC and region’s top teams this season. LHU finished with a slight 11-10 advantage in shots, while Millersville held an 8-7 advantage in corners. Despite the lone goal coming from Zannoni, the two teams combined for several quality chances. LHU goalkeeper Troy Teresak (Pompton Plains, N.J./DePaul Catholic) finished with four saves and his Millersville counterpart Darian McCauley made five stops. Millersville pressured Lock Haven early, but the Bald Eagles took control shortly after the midway portion of the opening half. The Haven goal all started thanks to strong midfield play from Ben Wilson (Boswell, Pa./Conemaugh Township), who won a 50-50 play at midfield. Wilson sent the ball down the line to Beckham Sibiski (Kutztown, Pa./Kutztown H.S), who ran onto the pass behind the MU defenders. Sibiski and Zannoni had a two-on-one breakaway, and Sibiski slotted the ball across to a wide open Zannoni, who calmly tucked the ball home.
Zannoni almost made it 2-0 in the 63rd minute when he drilled a volley toward net, but McCauley was on the spot and made an impressive stop. Teresak kept LHU in it in the second half as he was called up on to make several tough saves. Millersville didn’t go away and threw everything at Lock Haven in the final 10 minutes of the match. With just a minute left, the Bald Eagles almost put it away with an insurance goal, but again McCauley came up big. In the end, Zannoni’s first career goal was all Lock Haven needed to upset the Marauders. LHU gets a crack at another nationallyranked team on Saturday (Sept. 30) as the Bald Eagles head to No. 22 West Virginia Wesleyan (4 p.m.).

15 SPORTS Softball and Baseball set for fall exhibition games Alex Sklar Sports Editor aws1509@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University Softball and Baseball teams have both scheduled fall exhibitions for the upcoming weeks. Both teams will square off against Division-I opponents. The Softball team will be hosting Bucknell University on Sat., Sept. 30 at noon. The Bald Eagles will then travel to play Penn State on Wed., Oct. 4 at 5:30p.m. LHU is looking to build off of a strong season last year where the Haven won 28 games and played deep into the PSAC Softball Championships. Lock Haven returns some key players from last season including: Senior Moriah Lindsey, Juniors, Faith Ceely, Becca Caputo, and Bekah Slattery, and sophomore Madison Mathes. Last season, Lindsey batted .279 with 36 hits, six doubles, three home runs, and 14 runs batted in. Slattery led the pitching staff in ERA with a 3.34 in 30 contests, wins (16), 21 complete games, 172 innings pitched, and 134 strikeouts. Ceely hit .309, scored 34 runs, had 47 hits, three doubles, drew 14 walks, and batted in eight runs. Caputo batted .281 with 38 hits, six doubles, three home runs, and recorded 13 runs batted in. Mathes hit .172 with 17 hits, two doubles, two home runs, and had 12 runs batted in. Lock Haven Baseball will also be traveling to Penn State for their lone exhibition game. The Bald Eagles will play a single nine inning
contest on Fri., Oct. 6 at 6p.m. at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. This will be the third year in a row these two teams square off in a fall exhibition game. The Haven had a strong season in 2016, finishing 32-18. In PSAC Championship play, the Bald Eagles were defeated by eventual PSAC Champion Seton Hill. “Our program is very fortunate to have the opportunity to play Penn State in one of the finest facilities in college baseball,” Lock Haven head baseball coach Jim Chester told Doug Spatafore of golhu.com. “Coach Cooper and his staff have been outstanding hosts.” Lock Haven will look to continue off of last years successes and build for their upcoming season.

West Chester spoils LHU’s 2017 homecoming Jayson Moyer Editor-in-Chief jpm362@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven finally had its chance. After spending the opening three weeks of the season on the road, the Bald Eagles (0-4) saw their home turf, their home stadium, and their home crowd for the first time this season on Saturday against West Chester (3-1). The Golden Rams were able to spoil Lock Haven’s 2017 Homecoming, winning 35-14. Lock Haven was driving on their first possession of the game. On 4th and 15 on the West Chester 31 yard line, Bald Eagle head coach Dave Taynor sent out Nick Boumerhi, his trusty kicker, for a 47 yard attempt. As the ball was snapped, Nydair Rouse made an excellent play on the ball, blocking Boumerhi’s kick, where the ball was picked up by Shaq James and taken for a 64 yard touchdown to open up the scoring. Lock Haven was called for an illegal block in the back on the play, upholding the touchdown and putting West Chester up 7-0. It should be noted that Lock Haven used two different quarterbacks on their first possession of the game, as true-freshman Kyle Knight started the game and converted two third downs with his legs. Redshirt-Junior Jimmy Strickland then took over midway through the drive and would finish the game. Strickland passed for 196 yards and a touch-
down. “I thought Jimmy did some real good things,” said Taynor. “We’ve got to get his ankle healthy.” Strickland hurt his leg in the first half but gutted it out for the rest of the game. “The second half, he [Strickland} basically played on one wheel.”
Taynor went on to note how Strickland didn’t practice this entire week, due to spraining the same ankle last week. Late in the first quarter, West Chester quarterback A.J. Long completed a 38 yard pass to Rasheem James on 3rd and 2 to the Lock Haven 28. Three plays later, with the Golden Rams facing another third down, Long again made another play, this time with his legs, taking it 23 yards to
the Lock Haven two yard line. On the very next play, Long rushed for a two yard touchdown to put West Chester up by two possessions. With the ball again, Lock Haven took it to the West Chester eight yard line. Boumerhi missed from 25 yards on fourth down for his second miss of the game. With 6:22 to go in the second quarter, Long again hooked up with one of his receivers for a long completion, this time connecting with Dan Neuhaus for a 44 yard touchdown to put the Golden Rams up 210. It was the first reception of his career. As the clock neared halftime, Strickland dropped back and hit Kyeef Williams for 33 yards over the middle. Two plays later, running back Ralph Hyland scored his first touchdown on the year, putting the Bald Eagles on the board. Hyland rushed for 98 yards on 16 carries. “Overall at running back, this was the first game we started to get healthy,” said Taynor. “Ralph, I thought, did a very good job as a runner today. Hyland missed the first two weeks of the season with a hamstring injury. “It started up front,” said Hyland when asked about the team’s overall success with the ground game. “They are a really experienced group -- a band of brothers.” Trailing 35-7 with 8:59 to go in the fourth quarter, Strickland hit Kyeef Williams over the middle who powered his way into the endzone. It was an excellent catch by Williams as he took the contact once the ball hit his hands. Lock Haven will hit the road for the fourth time in five weeks as they will travel to Shippensburg on Saturday for a 1p.m. kickoff.
