LHU alumnus and author to speak to students Staff Reports Susan Pogorzelski, a Lock Haven University alumna, will be speaking at the LHU Pennsylvania Authors Reading Series on Thursday, April 26 in the Parsons Union Building Multipurpose Room at 7 p.m.

The Pennsylvania Authors Reading Series is hosted by the Lock Haven University English Department and the College of Liberal Arts and Education.

Pogorzelski will also be hosted by the Annie Halenbake Ross Library Food for Thought Luncheon on Friday, April 27 at 1 p.m. at the Ross Library in Lock Haven. She will also be visiting classes at LHU and speaking about careers with an English degree.

Pogorzelski is an alumna of the Lock Haven University English department and a successful author. She works for Brown Beagle Books as a creative coach and is an award winning author of two works. In her semi-autobiographical work, “The Last Letter” she recounts her challenges in dealing with chronic Lyme’s Disease. Her other awardwinning work is titled “Gold in the Days of Summer”.

Along with writing, Pogorzelski has also founded the LymeBrave Foundation. LymeBrave provides education, support, and awareness for those suffering with Lyme’s Disease.

Former LHU athletic training professor and students recognized Staff Reports A former instructor and two former students of Lock Haven University’s athletic training program were recently inducted into the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame Club.

David Tomasi was an athletic trainer and instructor for LHU’s athletic training department that was inducted into the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame Club. Tomasi started at LHU before the program’s creation in the 1970’s and is known as the father of the Athletic Training program itself.

Tomasi has been the recipient of many other awards and honors due to his distinguished career at LHU. He was elected to the Pennsylvania Athletic Trainers’ Society Hall of Fame in 2001. In 2015 he was inducted into the Lock Haven University Athletics Hall of Fame.

His legacy still lives on through the program and his former students.

Two of Tomasi’s former students were inducted into the Eastern Athletic Trainers’ Association Hall of Fame Club along with him.

Wayne Evans graduated from Lock Haven University in 1977 and Laurie Zaparzynski in 1987. Both of them have had distinguished careers at Mansfield University since their time at LHU. Evans began at Mansfield University in 1980 as an athletic trainer.

He was the head athletic trainer for 12 years at the University. He then moved over to become a health science professor until his recent retirement in 2015.

Zaparzynski started as an assistant athletic trainer to Evans at Mansfield University in 1989. In 1992, when Evans became a health science professor, Zaparzynski took over as head of the athletic training department. As of today, she is an assistant professor of health science at Mansfield University.

NEWS 3 Ninth annual Celebration of Scholarship held at LHU Mia Swales

Wilson says Scholarship is all over campus classrooms, labs and meetings on a day to day bases. Scholarship is a opportunity for students to put together the things they observe in their day to day activities as well as putting together their research.

“We are now ready to witness our wonderful students sharing their research and creativity, and preparing themselves for future achievements,”Enrique Herrera, COS coordinator.

This year the university’s Celebration of Scholarship coordinator was Enrique Herrera. Herrera thanks all of the participants of COS. Along with the experience of college, COS allows students to build a portfolio and broaden their horizons in their experience with research on a topic in which they choose within their assigned subject.

Not only does the Celebration of Scholarship allow students to do research and apply things learned and experienced daily, but it allows students and faculty members to connect their ideas and creativity together.

Through a long day of scheduled research presentations on various topics the Celebration of Scholarships was a success, gathering students to express their findings, and learn from faculty.

David Horowitz to speak on danger of identity politics Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Conservative writer, David Horowitz will give a speech titled “Identity Politics are Dangerous and Totalitarian,” in the Parson’s Union Building, April 23 at 7 p.m.

Horowitz spent much of his youth as a self-identified Marxist, as he graduated in the 1960s with a Masters in English Literature from University of California at Berkeley. He later worked for the Bertrand Russell Peace Foundation.

Through the 1970s, Horowitz changed his ideological alignment and began writing about his conservatives views in 1985.

Today, Horowitz attacks political bias on college campuses and identitarians.

Lock Haven University’s Department of Sociology and The Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) are sponsoring this event.

“We really want to encourage civil discourse which doesn’t happen on a consistent basis on this campus. Not in a way that stifles it but it’s not always a hot topic,”said Noah Ellison, president of YAL. Ellison explained he want YAL to build up the speaker credibility of the campus by consistently inviting well-known individuals.

Brandie Kessler ’05, is a reporter with the York Daily Record. She talked about her many experiences as a reporter, including stints covering local news, city council meetings, and working the crime beat. She talked about the emotional trauma of covering difficult stories like the school shooting in Sandy Hook, Connecticut, but also shared a lighthearted story to illustrate the importance of curiosity for anyone interested in being a journalist.

The Lock Haven University Communication Department held its majors meeting for the spring semester on Thursday, April 12. Featuring: Nykarri Cunningham, Daniel Parsley, and Jay Santana Evannah Phan Arts and Entertainment Editor Etp7162@lockhaven.edu In this week’s “Talent at the Haven”, I am featuring three freshmen students: Jay Santana, Daniel Parsley, and Nykarri Cunningham. They are all trying to pave their own pathways in the world and find their own individual voices in a growing music industry.

“I started rapping when I was five years old,” said Jay Santana. “I got into it because of my older cousin and thought it was so amazing when he was in that studio and it made me want to get into it. The first written rap that I ever wrote was trash but that just made me want to keep working harder on it so that I could get better and have some flow in my lyrics.”

These three all have very different backgrounds and come from different walks of life. The thing they do have in common is that they all started rapping and performing for the love of the music.

Each of them have expressed in great detail why they chose to perform and write.

Daniel Parsley said, “With my lyrics, I try to tell stories. They are stories about what I went through, what I’m going through, and what I want to happen in the future.”

These guys practice tirelessly throughout their day to make sure that all of their lyrics are on point and clear cut.

“The goal is to be able to hit somebody in a place that they may have never felt.

If my music connects with at least one person, it’s a job well done,” said Parsley.

All three of these guys get inspired

from other musical artists but they do not try to mimic anyone else’s style. They really pride themselves in being original and not trying to follow into anyone elses footsteps. It is important to all of them that they create their own niche and create music that is real, authentic and raw.

If you are apprehensive about seeing these guys perform, do not fret, they will be performing in the upcoming student-run Rap Showcase that will be held on April 20, 2018 at 7 p.m. at Price Auditorium.

Nykarri Cunningham deserves a special shout out since he was a real driving force that pulled all of the strings to put together a platform that enabled Lock Haven students to perform their music.

Cunningham worked hard to put together a concert like this at Lock Haven University because he loved all of the aspects of performing. After the first time he performed, he fell in love with the interactions that he was able to create with the crowd and wanted to bring that to LHU. These guys are truly passionate about their music and have been working on this showcase everyday to make sure that it is an outsanding success. There are a lot of things that go on behind the scenes to make sure everything turns out smoothly for the upcoming showcase.

“Every time I hop in the shower,” said Cunningham, “I try to rehearse my songs just to make sure that they’re crispy for the performance. People don’t see what goes on behind the scenes, they see what is on stage. If what’s on stage is belove average or subpar, that’s what they’re going to know you as. We cannot have that.”

“Amateur” is a spectacular film is about a young basketball player looking to make it to the NBA and finds himself caught in corruption within the basketball organization. Terron Forte is his name and believe me when I tell you that he has game. He goes from playing on a losing middle school team to playing for an elite NCAA prep school on scholarship. He is only an eighth grader and all of it is just handed to him by the school’s recruiter, Coach Gaines.

Gaines is the mastermind of everything involving how to run his players and how to win the game, but there’s a few tricks that he has to pull in order to achieve greatness for the team. There’s a scandal that barely any of the players on his team know about. The ones that do know what’s happening are paid to keep their mouths shut.

This movie really goes into great detail about how a scandal like this is executed and shows how to get away with it even though it’s immoral and cheating. This all comes to a stop when Forte catches wind of something suspicious about his coach and some of the closest people around him.

The film has a strong educational value because even if you didn’t know anything about basketball, you’ll learn almost all of the ins and outs about this beloved sport. You’ll learn about how the players operate to keep playing the game, how the coaches work the players to play their best, the struggles the players can encounter while playing the sport and trying to keep up in school, and more.

A lot of people think that playing a sport is easy, but that’s not true at all. In order to play a sport, you have to focus on different components in order to be the best in the game while balancing other things like getting an education until you make it to the big leagues. Even when you’re a professional, you have to fight for spots on different teams and learn how to adjust with different environments and people you come across.

They may not explain a lot about the pros in this film, but you can get a sense of what it feels like and can find things online about how the actual pros deal with their lives.

Other than all the technical issues and kind of nitty gritty parts in this movie, this would be a great watch for young basketball players to give them a heads up of what’s to come if they want to go pro and to let them know what to watch out for within the organization. It also shows that adults have a lot of control on kids as is but can get really intense when it comes to sports and future careers so it’s important to not give into that control whole-heartedly. A lot of life lessons in this movie so you really have to pay attention to its content which makes it even more excellent and exciting to watch.

“Good Kids” as a critique of American Society Dr. Laxman Satya Guest Writer Lsatya@lockhaven.edu What an excellent play put out by LHU students and the Theatre Department. The acting talent brought the best in so many characters in this rather disturbing show, which opened at Sloan Auditorium on April 12th.

The message sent out was powerful. A microscopic imagery of the deep and underlying violence and malice that pervades American society, starting with the impressionable youth. The story of the football culture of machismo, alcohol, drugs, girls, violence and gang rape is all too familiar. But this play brings it out in a truly graphic manner.

It shows how the American boys and girls are socialized in a culture of violence that only breeds violence. And who are the victims of this violence? One may ask. Obviously, it’s the vulnerable gender.

However, the violence in American society has a long psycho-history

going back to its beginning in 1492 and thereafter.

The destruction of entire civilizations in the North, Central, and South America. The genocidal murder of millions of Native Americans.

The rape, pillage, plunder, and loot of an entire continent. Millions of Africans captured, kidnapped, chained, brutalized, forcibly brought and worked under horrendous conditions for centuries.

All this seeped so deep in American culture. It seems to have penetrated its subconscious. This deep underlying current pervading in American consciousness, expresses itself every so often in such random acts of violence.

“Good Kids” depicts a tiny flash of this long psycho-history. Of all the powerful characters in this play, three stand out. The girl with purple tinged hair, who acts as a trenchant critique of the rapists.

The football player who is conflicted in the acts of his teammates and in whose basement, the gang rape takes place. And the narrator in the background, who comes out on a wheelchair to end the play, as the ultimate survivor. This is a great play in social awareness and everyone should watch it, despite its portrayal of deeply disturbing violence.

Carrie Underwood’s Comeback Mia Swales Staff Writer Mxs3279@lockhaven.edu “American Idol” winner and country artist Carrie Underwood recently performed her new hit single “Cry Pretty” at the ACM Awards.

Underwood took the show by storm with her emotional performance. This was her first ap-

pearance since she suffered severe injuries when she fell in her home in November.

Underwood’s song “Cry Pretty” carries powerful meaning. This song shows its relevance to society just within the first 20 seconds of the track. The lyrics say, “I’m sorry, but I’m just a girl. Not usually the kind to show my heart to the world. I’m pretty good at keeping it together. I hold my composure, for worse or for better. So I apologize if you don’t like what you see, but sometimes my emotions get the best of me. And falling apart is as human as it gets.

You can’t hide it, you can’t fight what the truth is...”

This is a strong message challenging how our society discourages people from showing their feelings openly. There are some who are hesitant for various reasons and there are some who can’t, won’t and don’t show their emotions, perhaps due to fear of something.

People’s reasons can vary, but overall, most of us are encouraged to hold our emotions in check, at least in public settings. Underwood’s song is a powerful antidote to this closed-off so-

cial norm. Underwood addresses the fact that when emotions and feelings well up, it’s natural and human to show that openly. In reality, “falling apart is as human as it gets. You can’t hide it, you can’t fight what the truth is.”

She goes on to say in the song, “You can pretty lie and say it’s okay. You can pretty smile and just walk away. Pretty much fake your way through anything. But you can’t cry pretty.” She is acknowledging that we all try to mute ourselves and even pretend to be in control.

However, eventually you just might break.

“You can’t turn off the flood when the dam breaks. When all your mascara is going to waste. When things get ugly, you just gotta face. That you can’t cry pretty.” She makes it acceptable to be vulnerable and open because it’s normal, it’s real, and in that moment nothing else matters. This song and its lyrics convey an important message that we all need to hear. In a society that values emotional control as a sign of strength, Underwood’s music is a liberating force.

The Most Powerful Force: Love Mia Swales

Jimi Hendrix once said, “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.” Yet, the power of love is often underestimated. The world lacks peace because it lacks the realization that love is power.

Sometimes love isn’t appreciated because more often than not it’s hard to differentiate between what’s real and what’s fake.

Genuine love is beautiful and can knock you to your knees or bring you to your feet. Love is precious, love is sensitive, in the motion and feel of love there are lessons and there are blessings.

Love can hurt and love can heal.

The kick to love is to utilize it, not diminish it. We fall into a trap because one’s way of showing and giving love may not match another’s expectations. Love tends to be belittled because the powerful forces of hate and conflict often seem to dominate the headlines and the world news arena. But love should be seen

as the greater power, uniting us and strengthening us. As human beings we are embodied with enough love to fill our lungs and expel the hate and darkness.

When someone aims hateful speech and actions toward you, don’t be discouraged. Stand tall. Reciprocate with love. It’s my deepest belief that our positive energy is contagious. When the heat of hate is revealed, it can spread like wildfire and become hard to contain. But giving up and giving in is an indulgence we cannot afford. Giving in to the hate and hurt becomes wasted time that can never be recaptured.

It’s so much more powerful to embrace peace and love, no matter what’s inflicted upon you. In many regions of the world, people are suffering from neglect and from terrible acts of harm, but instead of bemoaning the horror and accepting futility, we need to counteract those evil forces.

The world needs our love, our understanding, and the peace that can come from our life-affirming, loving actions. Every day will not bring sunshine and rainbows, but every day is a good day to demonstrate love and bring peace to others. Let love be the force that connects you with family, friends, and even strangers.

Less Clutter, Less Chaos: A Guide To Spring Cleaning Bethany Barrett

But it hasn’t felt like spring until this past week, when we were finally hit with some warm weather and sunshine.

I decided to take advantage of the nice weather by doing some much needed spring cleaning.

Here’s how I did some thorough spring cleaning 1. Clearing Out The Closet For months I have consistently had the problem of running out of hang-

ers. I kept buying more, and more packs of them until I realized that the issue wasn’t a lack of hangers, but rather an excessive amount of clothing. Finally, my mother gave me some golden advice: if you haven’t worn it in over a year, get rid of it. That rule successfully eliminated around a quarter of my closet.

Three garbage bags are now on their way to the Lock Haven Goodwill.

This is a great way to get rid of unwanted clothes that are taking up room.

If you haven’t worn it in over a year, then you are not likely to ever wear it again. Get rid of it!

2. Dusting It’s going to look a lot worse before it looks better. Especially if you’re like me, and have an immense amount of knickknacks and hair and makeup products to get out of the way first. Getting all of these items aside before you dust will give you a chance to go through the products and eliminate what you don’t use anymore.

It will make your dresser look less cluttered and more organized. If you’re on a budget, white vinegar mixed with water and essential oils is a great all natural cleaner for all kinds of surfaces.

3. Wash Your Sheets Is there anything better than clean sheets? Don’t skip out on this. Strip down your bed, pillow cases and all. As the weather is getting warmer, it becomes more and more important to wash your sheets often. This will help your entire room to smell fresh, clean and it will help you to have a much needed good night’s rest.

4. Vacuum/Clean Your Floors This is another important thing to do, not only so that your living space looks neat and clean, but also so that you keep it smelling clean.

This is always the last thing that I do, when everything is finally off of the floor of my room. Once again, if you’re looking for a natural and cheap way to clean, a $1 spray bottle from Dollar Tree and some essential oils mixed with water is a way to keep your living space smelling nice and clean.

This is the perfect time of year to do some heavy duty cleaning. With less clutter, your life will in turn feel less chaotic. Therefore, you should give yourself some time on a nice spring day to do some spring cleaning.

Meditation: A Timeless Technique Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu When I first happened upon the idea or practice of meditation, I wondered what century it was. Who, in their right mind, would sit for hours or even 15 minutes to think about nothing? I thought it was an outmoded practice that we, in the West, rightfully scoff at.

However, under proper- and perhaps less presumptuous- inspection, I found some utility in the practice.

The idea of meditation is strung, irreconcilably, with the premise that the Self is an illusion and it is the driving force of most of the world’s misery.

What in the world is the Self? You may ask.

The Self is your train of thought, the character you play out and the feelings that arise in failure, success, or stagnation of goals.

In the West, we tend to think that we are the thinker of our thoughts; that we are the author of anything that tends to rear its head in our imagination. However, thoughts only arise, and we insert a thinker that does not exist. This is the illusion of the Self.

However, meditation is the way to realize that thoughts only arise. We don’t know what thoughts will come about next, we are, then, slaves to whatever may come about.

Slaves to our thoughts, we thinking without direction. Given that the world is filled with tragedy, the thoughts go in to a feedback loop that intensifies themselves.

Ask an anxiety prone individual what they’re doing when they have a panic attack. They’re just thinking and one mental catastrophe leads to another. But there is no one in the driver seat in the car that is careening out of control.

Meditation is useful in that we may observe thoughts that may come, note them, and let them fade.

The emotions that are attached to thoughts, then, may also fade. Mediation doesn’t remove the uncomfortable emotions, but it does vastly reduce the half-life of them. By noticing thoughts that are causing need-

less suffering, noting them, then letting them pass, people can shorten their time in pain.

Sam Harris, author and neuroscientist, relates the process of meditation to the analogy of walking on a tightrope: Find a horizontal cable that can support your weight, stand on one end. Step forward by placing one foot directly in front of the other, repeat, don’t fall.

It involves practice and patience. Sam Harris outlines his meditation instructions: 1.) Sit comfortably, with your spine erect, either in chair or cross-legged on a cushion.

2.)Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and feel the points of contact between your body and the chair or floor. Notice the sensations associated with sitting— feelings of pressure, warmth, tingling, vibration, etc.

3.) Gradually become aware of the process of breathing. Pay attention to wherever you feel the breath most clearly—either at the nostrils, or in the rising and falling your abdomen.

4.) Allow your attention to rest in the mere sensation of breathing.

(There is no need to control your breath. Just let it come and go naturally.)

5.)Every time your mind wanders in thought, gently return it to the sensation of breathing.

6.) As you focus on the breath, you will notice that other perceptions and sensations continue to appear: sounds, feelings in the body, emotions, etc. Simply notice these phenomena as they emerge in the field of awareness, and then return to the sensation of breathing.

7.) The moment you observe that you have been lost in thought, notice the present thought itself as an object of consciousness. Then return your attention to the breath—or to whatever sounds or sensations arise in the next moment.

8.) Continue in this way until you can merely witness all objects of consciousness—sights, sounds, sensations, emotions, and even thoughts themselves—as they arise and pass away.

9.)Don’t fall.

Interview with conservative writer David Horowitz Noah Ellison Guest Writer

nce960@lockhaven.edu David Horowitz will speak at Lock Haven University on April 23 in the PUB Room 2 at 7 p.m. He’s a man with one of the most interesting careers in political activism. He was one of the leaders of the American New-Left before making the ideological journey to conservatism. Since then, Horowitz has become one of the most important commentators and political scholars of our time.

His story begins in the early 1970s, when he was co-editor of the political and literary magazine Ramparts. “I considered myself a Marxist revolutionary.” Through his position, he became involved with the Black Panther Party in Northern California, and specifically Huey P. Newton.

“I raised a lot of money for the Black Panthers for a school,” said Horowitz. His ideological stance would later be called into question when he learned of the murder of Betty Van Patter, who was a bookkeeper for the party at the time and a mother of three children.

Horowitz discovered that the Black Panther Party was responsible for the murder. He describes the event in retrospect as a “spiritual crisis,” that “took me seven years to work through.”

As a man who has been on both sides of the political spectrum, Horowitz holds some insight into the core difference between the two predominant sides. He posits conservatives “... believe the root cause of the problem is us.”

who are on the left with beliefs as a “fantasy” and do not realize those limitations. The leftist world is primarily a concoction of how they wished the world was.

A common trend was the use of the word “leftist”, instead of “liberal”. “I tear my hair out when leftists are called liberals.

There’s nothing liberal about them. They are bigoted and vindictive.” That is to say, they do not promote liberty.

However, Horowitz maintains that his current beliefs would be considered “centrist” by the standards of his time. “The Democratic Party is as left today as the communist party was then.

by Donna Brazile and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz.”

In Horowitz’s estimation, the current left is far removed from the people he interacted with.

“It’s gotten worse.” he said when reflecting on politically-correct culture from the early nineties until now. “The most retrograde institutions in America are universities which have purged conservatives from their faculties.

Left-wing fascism among student activists is rampant.”

This diagnosis of America’s cultural momentum continues into Horowitz’s view on identity politics. “They ignore the individual and judge people by their skin color, gender, sexual orientation. It’s racist. The left judges people by these abstract categories and erases individuals in the process. If you are a white male, you are guilty before the fact.” He holds that this line of thinking is dangerous, and built on Marxist principles.

There is a parallel between the oppressoroppressed model of Karl Marx, and the similar patterns of the same dichotomy seen in modern identity politics. He further laments that this ideology that has killed so many in the last century, and yet it persists. “We are close to the end of America as we have known it.”

Horowitz went on to detail the indoctrination that happens on many campuses across

the United States. “The curriculum is indoctrination. They purged conservatives from faculty, then the reading lists, and then the curriculum. The models are all leftist. You can’t even be invited to campus.”

He has specific experience in that last assertion. He travels to many universities with a personal security detail as opposed to relying on outside sources. He describes what conservative students face as “intimidation”.

Horowitz recalled a quote from Soviet-era Russia: “The sunflower that grows the tallest has its head chopped off first.” When asked about a path forward for young conservative students, Horowitz advised caution. “I think that you guys are both gutsy and vulnerable.

The left is vindictive and bigoted. I wouldn’t push the envelope too far. Use your college years to get smart.”

It is advised to arrive at the event before 6:45 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. The title of the speech is “Identity Politics are Dangerous and Totalitarian.”

Horowitz said, “My original title was ‘Identity Politics Are Racist and Totalitarian’. That’s what I’m going to speak about.”

OPINION 13 Rocks for sale support GeoScience Club Adventures Roxanne Aretta

Opinions Editor rab484@lockhaven.edu The GeoScience Club will sell nifty necklaces, rocks, pet rocks, minerals, geodes, coal and fossilized shark teeth in East Campus this week.

The money raised is going to help pay for upcoming trips, such as the next adventure the group is going on to Carnegie Science Center in Pittsburgh.

Some of the fossils and rocks that the club is selling were found at “Red Hill� near Renovo, Pennsylvania. Red Hill is a large bedrock exposure of red rock formed during the Devonian Period. Many plant and animal fossils fall from the side of Red Hill and can be collected alongside route 120.

In the 1990s, paleontologists discovered fossils of creatures in transitional forms that were never found before. Over 300 million years ago, these animals were in a transitional period of evolution from one species to another. Red Hill is well-known by geologists for these transitional fossils.

The rock-solid sales will be in the hallway outside of Nanobites from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day until April 20. The group is accepting cash for payment.

Athletes of the week Keyshawn D’Orso

Baseball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Keyshawn D’Orso of the LHU baseball team has been named this week’s Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Men’s Athlete of the Week.

D’Orso had a huge week at the plate for the Bald Eagles. For the week, D’Orso hit .333 with a .667 slugging percentage and a .429 onbase percentage while tallying 10 RBI’s, four runs scored and two home runs.

D’Orso’s week was highlighted by a bigtime doubleheader at Mansfield in which he went 5-8 with 10 RBI’s, four runs scored and two home runs. In the first game of that series, D’Orso went a perfect 4-4 at the plate with seven RBI’s, three runs scored, and two home runs. His second home run, a two-run shot, came in the top of the seventh inning with LHU trailing 10-8 with two outs to tie the game. In the second game, D’Orso came up big again for LHU as he knocked in three more runs in that game to go along with a run scored.

Softball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Kayla Gee of the LHU Softball team has been named this week’s Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Female Athlete of the Week.

Gee was dominant on the mound for the Bald Eagles as she went a perfect 3-0 as she pitched three straight one hitters holding the opposing batters to a .056 batting average in 17 innings pitched. Gee struck out 20 batters and only allowed two earned runs and walked four.

Highlighting her tremendous performance was her game vs Clarion where she pitched six innings striking out 10 batters while not surrendering a walk.

Marte & Reddinger’s late-game heroics help #23 LHU hold off #21 IUP, 14-13 Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Braxtin Reddinger (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford) scored the game-winning goal in the game’s final minutes and with just over a minute to play, Bald Eagle goalkeeper Lauren Marte (Stevens, Pa./Cocalico) made a huge save as the duo’s late-game heroics helped the No. 23 Lock Haven University lacrosse team (10-4, 6-3 PSAC) hold off No. 21 Indiana (Pa.) University (8-4, 5-4 PSAC), 14-13.

With the win, LHU remained unbeaten at home on the season (8-0).

Lock Haven led 10-8 at halftime, before the Bald Eagles and Crimson Hawks treated the fans who braved the cold and snowy late mid-April weather to an epic second half of lacrosse between two nationally-ranked Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) squads. The win was a huge one as it pushed Lock Haven to 6-3 in conference play. With the season winding down, the win could prove valuable as today’s game already held major PSAC postseason implications.

With LHU leading 10-8 at half, IUP opened the second half on a run and four straight Crimson Hawk goals put the visitors up 12-10 with 22:07 left in the game. Lock Haven went on a run of its own and netted three straight. Alex O’Herrick (Barto, Pa./ Boyertown)’s second straight goal put Lock Haven ahead 13-12 with 9:20 left in regulation.

IUP’s Ally Burrows drew the two teams even once again as her goal with 6:33 left in the game made it 13-13.

Reddinger’s third goal of the game gave LHU the lead again,

and for good. Her strike with 3:41 left in the contest proved to be the game-winner.

The drama didn’t end there as the Lock Haven defensive unit got its chance to shine and nobody shined brighter than the Bald Eagles’ goalkeeper.

Marte, who didn’t start today in goal for Lock Haven, entered at the start of the second half and she never looked back as her seven saves fueled the Bald Eagles road to the win. No save was bigger than her stop on Burrows with 1:34 left in the game. The save preserved The Haven’s one-goal (14-13) lead.

Marte added two caused turnovers and three grounds balls as she turned in a sensational 30 minutes in the second half.

Reddinger added two assists. She was one of two LHU players to net a hat trick as Katie Costanza (Denver, Pa./Cocalico) added three goals.

Dana Laulis (Garnet Valley, Pa./Garnet Valley) dished out five assists and Hayley Kilian (Ridley Park, Pa./Ridley) recorded three helpers. O’Herrick, Ashley Gochenaur (Lancaster, Pa./LampeterStrasburg), Kate Hooper (Perth, Western Australia/ St. Mary Anglican Girls School) and Loren Librizzi (Miller Place, N.Y./Millerplace) all scored two goals apiece.

Gochenaur added six draw controls and three caused turnovers.

In all, Lock Haven was credited with 13 caused turnovers.

The Bald Eagles will return to action on Saturday, April 21 when they travel to West Chester to take on the No. 9 Golden Rams. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.

floor hockey fundraiser for student battling cancer Brendan Hagen Guest Writer bhh3378@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University’s Sport Administration Society recently hosted their annual “Floor Hockey Tournament” on Saturday, March 3rd.

In previous years, the club used this event as a way to fundraise for professional development activities such as: attendance at the Robert Morris Sport Business Conference and their Experiential Learning Trip to the College Football Championship where students volunteer to work the events surrounding the game. This year, the cause was much greater and hit far closer to home for the club.

Over winter break, when many students were relaxing from a busy semester and spending time with family, Sport Administration student Anthony Buzzella was diagnosed with cancer. To make the matter even more difficult, Buzzella was set to begin his dream internship at the Charlotte Motor Speedway which was the final step before his

graduation in May. After the news spread about his condition, Sport Administration students and faculty reached out in support and decided to host an event to assist with his medical bills. This is where the Floor Hockey Tournament came in.

For the tournament, teams were made up of various student organizations including Greek life that came to Buzzella’s support. Together, the participants raised over $400 in donations which was matched by the Sport Administration Society.

These funds were donated in their entirety, with Buzzella receiving a check of $900.

“The event itself was great, and it was so awesome to receive that much support, but just being here and being with everybody and feeling like a normal student again was great in and of itself.

It was awesome seeing the support and spending time with everyone” stated Buzzella following the event.

Congratulations to the winning team, the “Revengers”, made up of Josh Semanco, Dakota Trego, Brendan Hagen, and Jon Kreiser.

A special thank you to everyone who helped in making this year’s Floor Hockey Tournament a huge success.

Football to host Crimson and White game Saturday Sam Wilson

Guest Writer slw2547@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University football team will host their annual Crimson & White game this Saturday, April 21 at 2 p.m. at Hubert Jack Stadium.

The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) allows each state school to participate in a spring football season. Spring ball consists of team lifting sessions as well as PSAC approved practices in full equipment on the new turf of Hubert Jack Stadium. The short season concludes with the Crimson & White game each year.

This semester the Bald Eagle student athletes

will have a chance to bond with not only their teammates, but their new coaching additions as well.

The Lock Haven football program welcomed three new coaches to their staff this offseason with the additions of Jeff Smith- defensive coordinator and safeties coach, Chuck Boyd- special teams coach and Matt Zanellato- wide receivers coach.

The Crimson & White game is also a part of the 2018 Lock Haven Accepted Students Day. During the game’s halftime, all of the 2022 Lock Haven students will be recognized at the 50 yard line to take a class photograph.
