2 NEWS LHU alumnus visits Lock Haven for civil rights presentation Mark Matthews

Copy Editor mjm2923@lockhaven.edu A presentation on Asian Americans and their rights was held by an alumnus of Lock Haven University on April 5 in the Greenburg Auditorium. Her name is Dr. Stephanie Hinnershitz who is currently an Assistant Professor of History at Cleveland State University.

Hinnershitz started her presentation with thanking everyone for coming out. She first mentioned that the Florida State Constitution explained the rights of Asian Americans. The Asian Americans did not generally have the rights white people obtained, but Hinnershitz points out that the Asian Americans attempted to fight for their existing definitions of rights and justice in the South. They battled for their rights all the way to state

and federal supreme courts. Later on, she describes that they intersected with the African Americans fights for justice. The Asian Americans ended up reestablishing as a people who obtained civil rights in the South. Hinnershitz had her own book, “A Different Shade of Justice: Asian American Civil Rights in the South”, published by the University of North Carolina Press in 2017.

Hinnershitz completed her B.A. in History in 2006. She later on went to Temple University and University of Maryland to earn her M.A. in American and International History and her Ph.D. in American History.

Talon celebrates 5th birthday with community Ben Ronemus

News Editor bjr1324@lockhaven.edu A birthday celebration was held for Talon, the Lock Haven University mascot, last Saturday afternoon on the University Commons.

The weather was sunny but cool with a high of forty degrees on Saturday April 7, but that did not stop children, families, current students, and even prospective students from participating in the activities.

The celebration was honoring the 5th birthday for the name of the LHU mascot Talon. Even though the mascot name is only 5 years old, the university

has been “The Bald Eagles” for eighty years.

The birthday celebration was one of LHU’s Community Days, which are organized between the university, Keystone Central, Clinton County Economic Partnership, and Downtown Lock Haven.

It was organized for the same day as an Open House for prospective students, increasing the number of participants.

Many mascots showed up to sign autographs and take pictures. These include Boomer of the Williamsport Crosscutters, Chester the Cheetah, Fizzy from Pepsi, and various mascots from local high schools.

The organization of this event involved many people from across campus and took a few months.

There were many activities organized and each age

group was taken into account.

Along with taking photos and signing autographs the mascots also participated in bike races.

There was also a NASCAR driving simulator and a NASCAR tire changer for everyone to participate in.

The University Commons were littered in lawn games and inflatables for the children to enjoy. The local radio station WSQV also was present at the birthday celebration.

The “featured event” of the day was the musical performance by country start and LHU alumni Shawn Lacy from 2-3p.m.

After enjoying a day of activities and free food, everyone was invited to a free screening of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in Price Auditorium.

Lock Haven University welcomes Robert Pignatello as next president John Vitale

Guest Writer john.vitale@lhufoundation.org Lock Haven University held a welcoming ceremony for incoming university president Robert M. Pignatello. Pignatello will begin his tenure as the University’s 15th president on July 1.

“We stand on the shoulders of others,” Pignatello said, as he shared of his mother and father’s humble beginning as Italian-American immigrants and how as working-class parents living in a small town they struggled to send him to a local state college. “That sounds a lot like the families here in Lock Haven to me,” he said.

Pignatello learned of Lock Haven University almost 25 years ago when his cousin studying English in Italy to become a teacher enrolled and studied abroad at LHU. “I brought her back to New Jersey from here during winter break. I certainly did not imagine all these years later that I would become the president of this university. So perhaps this was fate,” he said Pignatello expressed his belief in the power of public higher education and touted LHU’s strengths and its vision for advancement.

“We have so many great assets here. An important vibrant mission, quality programs, outstanding faculty and dedicated staff, superb facilities and the breathtaking beauty of this region,” he said.

He also expressed his admiration and appreciation for the university’s council of trustees, Foundation board, alumni and “impressive students.”

“I’ve learned that the people of this community and region depend on a strong and viable Lock Haven University to help them reach their potential personally, professionally and to advance a caring and thriving society.

We are an engine of upward mobility,” Pignatello said.

“I knew I wanted to be here and I wanted to make a difference.” And I felt that I could make a difference,” he added.

He said that he would focus on extending the university’s reach and impact by partnering with the city, school system and the region to address community interests and concerns.

Pignatello referenced some of the challenges being faced by LHU and

many other institutions of higher education, including decreased enrollment and retention and reductions in state aid, along with increases in costs.

“Our strategic direction at Lock Haven must recognize and acknowledge certain realities that challenge us,” he said. “What can we do to overcome the financial and administrative obstacles we face? What more can we do to create an experience that supports and engages [students],” adding that the university and Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education (PASSHE) must find ways to prevent the costs from putting secondary learning out of reach for the commonwealth.

He said his goal is to put students first and focus on service and efficiency, and to utilize new technology and implement new strategies and best practices to retain students. He also said he plans to make the university stronger by partnering with businesses and with other universities in the State System to create a “more connected” network that promotes growth in recruitment and learning outcomes.

PASSHE’s Interim Chancellor, Dr. Karen M. Whitney, highlighted Pignatello’s “strong, stable and visionary leadership.”

“Robert Pignatello has more than 20 years of experience as a college senior executive and administrator,” Whitney said. “He been around the block a few times and I believe he’s well prepared for this new position. In fact, I believe he is perfectly prepared.”

For the past two years Pignatello served as Senior Vice President at Hunter College, a part of the City University of New York (CUNY) system.

Before that he served for 18 years for another CUNY school, John Jay College of Criminal Justice, as its vice president and eventual senior vice president.

In prior professional stints he was also an administrator in the Essex County Sheriff’s Department in Newark (N.J.), and a legislative assistant in the New Jersey State Senate. He also served in roles as council member, deputy mayor and mayor of the Township of Verona in New Jersey.

“Lock Haven is a very special place. It’s a university that is on a wonderful trajectory and poised to reach and even higher level of excellence, relevance and meaning to our students, alumni and the Lock Haven community,” Whitney said. “I am confident that Rob is uniquely qualified to take the university to the next level.”

Chair of Lock Haven University’s Council of Trustees, Dr. George Durrwachter (class of ’61), called the event a very special and new beginning at Lock Haven University.

“Our committee chair, Guy Graham (class of ’63), and the members of the search committee are to be commended,” Durrwachter said. “The committee represented every facet of our campus and worked together as a cohesive team. This is a tribute to the dedicated folks that they represent who are truly the heart and soul of this university.”

“The future of Lock Haven is bright,” Durrwachter added. “Rob Pignatello has the vision, the experience and fortitude to provide opportunities for future generations of students at Lock Haven to aspire and reach their academic goals.”

“This is an exciting and an important day for the university,” Whitney said. “I am completely convinced that your new president has already fallen in love with Lock Haven.”

“Tall buildings are great, but so are great mountains,” Pignatello said. In New York we have the Hudson River, but the Susquehanna is pretty spectacular. It’s truly an honor and privilege to be named the 15th president of this remarkable institution.”

Pennsylvania politicians discuss education budget Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu As Pennsylvania’s budget season looms, local representatives pushed for more state university funding at the 27th Alfred E. Hoberman Legislators Day, Friday in the Parson’s Union Building.

Rep. Mike Hanna, D-Pa., along with field representatives for Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., Sen. Joe Scarnati, R-Pa., and Rep. Glenn Thompson, R-Pa, spoke to an audience of faculty, students, city councilmen and administration.

Hanna took the opportunity to push against the latest news coming from Harrisburg regarding Stanley Saylor, appropriations committee chairman, who says that with the declining enrollments of state schools, the committee should consider declining appropriations.

“This was counterbalanced by the governor who would rather see an increase in appropriations, recognizing the need that we have here in the state system and the needs that the state must fulfill,”said Hanna.” I agree with Wolf” Hanna explained that Gov. Wolf proposed an increase of $50 million, which would get state system back to where it was in 2006 with a budget of $465 to $468 million. That, however, doesn’t account for inflation.

There are areas regarding funding for Higher Education where Hanna will not budge “I don’t think it’s helpful to talk about mergers or closures of universities, that would be disastrous for any one of the 14 schools,”said Hanna. ”Schools are about education but the communities where each of theses 14 schools are located, every single one of them draws their identity from the school, these communities thrive or not-so-much thrive when the universities thrive.”

To mediate the current budget shortages, however, Hanna went through the study done on the Pennsylvania State System of High-

er Education by the National Center on Higher Education Management Systems (NCHEMS).

NCHEMS recommended Pennsylvania universities focus on ensuring student success, leveraging the strengths of universities by sharing services and procurement and reduce the amount of political influence in the Pennsylivannia Board of Governors, which NCHEMS found unwieldy.

“It would be better for the system if there was less politics involved,”said Hanna.“It’s important for the system to take a look at itself.”

Mike Blazer, field representative for Genn Thompson, focused on the Omnibus bill supported by Thompson which increased pell grants, and funding regarding Career and Technical education, STEM and teacher retention.

Chuck Dillon, field representative for Joe Scarnati, pushed for more autonomy within each university.

“One size fits all does not work,”said Dillon.

Instead, each university should develop individual plans regarding enrollment, fiscal needs, and community needs, explained Dillon.

Kenneth Mash, president of APSCUF, pushed back against Dillon’s motions towards the privatization of state universities.

Mash explained that the reason state universities are becoming less competitive is because they are losing the market for students at the lower socioeconomic strata.

“The reality is that we have a generation of young people who are really getting the short end of the stick.”

In earlier generations, Pennsylvania picked up two-thirds of the cost of higher education, says Mash. Today, That’s now less than 25 percent and students are leaving with thousands of dollars in debt.

“Budgets are moral documents someone has to speak up to say that this is no longer acceptable,”said Mash.

Lock Haven University Presents: “Good Kids” Evannah Phan Arts & Entertainment Editor Etp7162@lockhaven.edu The LHU University Players in association with the Student Auxiliary Services and Theatre Department will be presenting “Good Kids” at 7:30 p.m. on April 12 and 13, 19 through the 21st, and again at 2 p.m. on April 14 in the Sloan Performing Arts Center Auditorium.

The production was written by Naomi Iizuka. The play is set in a Midwestern high school in a time period where social media is highly prevalent and the most common form of communication. “Good Kids” is about a seemingly casual sexual encounter that goes wrong and is then subjected to the ridicule of the internet. Caution: the performance may not be suitable for all audiences due to the heavy subject matter which includes harsh language, suggested sexual violence, and other sensitive content.

The performance is open to the general public. Doors will be opening 30 minutes before each scheduled showing. Tickets are available at the box office. Contact boxoffice@lockhaven.edu for more information.

Cardi B received shoutouts from various stars since her album dropped on April 6. Oprah, Ellen DeGeneres, SZA, Chance the Rapper, Logic, G- Eazy, Kehlani, YG, T.I, 50 Cent, and Green Day all praised the release. Diddy even posted a video dancing to Cardi’s new tunes. Before the album, Cardi B already had a hit single “Bodak Yellow” that went 5x Platinum, and other top-sellers including “Bartier

Cardi” and “Finesse” with Bruno Mars.

Cardi is known for her outspoken words and humble personality.

This past year she was the comedian and entertainment on “Love & Hip- Hop.” Now she storms the Billboard charts with record after record.

What to Binge-Watch Next: “One Day at a Time” Kiara Carson Staff Writer Knc9459@lockhaven.edu “One Day at a Time” is an amazing TV series that talks about the different kinds of diversity and struggles we are exposed to in the world. It’s about a single Cuban mother, Penelope, living with her two kids— Elena and Alex-- and her extremely dramatic, oldfashioned mother, Lydia. She works as a nurse to try to support her family.

As each day goes by, she tries her best to raise her kids in the right way, as any mother would want for her children, but she also has to look out for her own health.

Penelope used to be in the Army and when she left, she was diagnosed with PTSD, depression, and an anxiety disorder. This makes it even harder for her to stay normal, especially around her crazy family.

Luckily, she doesn’t face it alone. She has her mother to help her with paying the bills and taking care of the kids, but she also has their landlord/best friend, Schneider. He is an amazing support for Penelope’s character and genuinely loves the family. He helps them with life problems and teases them kindheartedly.

This family is well-rounded and often makes good arguments relevant to larger societal issues. For example, Elena, Penelope’s daughter, is often the one who makes interesting gender rights arguments in their home and

at school. You can tell she is an extreme feminist who believes in equal rights for men and women. She doesn’t see why there’s inequality between men and women and works to change opinions specifically about how men view women.

But, she’s also a teenage girl just trying to find her place in the world. At some point she discovers that she’s gay, which gives her more power to make arguments about gender identity. When the show brought in her sexuality, they did so gradually and the writers had her family embrace her positively as she told them about the change in her life.

I’m sure we can all imagine how difficult it may be to come out to your family and the amount of courage it takes to do that. The show really expresses those emotions and makes the point that no one should feel negatively about who they are. They want to show that acceptance is key, and it’s not the only time they talk about acceptance.

This series shows great life lessons and puts it in a comedy, which I think is a great way to teach people about complex situations and controversies in our society. It also shows different reactions to these situations, which seems real. This family not only solves their own problems, but they give great advice about the actual problems we face in our own lives. That’s the most important point of the show, other than that no matter how crazy life gets, family has your back.

Join the bereavement support group to cope with loss Bethany Barrett Staff Writer bcb8301@lockhaven.edu Coping the loss of a loved one can be one of the most stressful events in one’s life. It takes some time to work through grief. It’s important that in these challenging times, we reach out to others for support.

For anyone who currently may be dealing with the loss of a loved one, there is a new support group on campus which

is specifically for anyone who is dealing with grief.

The group meets on Thursdays from 12:30 to 1:30pm in Ulmer 222. There will be three more meetings this semester. The group is run by one of Lock Haven University’s counselors, Laura Gardner, and she would like to welcome anyone who might be interested in the group to give it a try.

The Hope Center holds “take back the night” rally

Lisette Schilling, Director of the Hope Center, presents opening statements The Take Back the Night Rally is part of the “It’s On Us” initiative whose goal is to raise awareness for sexual assault, prevent sexual assaults, help survivors access reporting systems and needed resources, provide leadership to the University and the community, and foster an environment that makes sexual assault completely unacceptable. The “It’s On Us” initiative pushes students to realize that sex without consent is sexual assault and compels students to intervene in situations where consent is not given.

Social Work Alumni Panel Shares Successes, Challenges with Students

Assistant Director of Engagement john.vitale@lhufoundation.org The hours are long, the stress can truly take a toll and it’s often difficult to forget about work when they’re not on the clock, but helping people and saving lives is what they want students to know makes a career in social work such a fulfilling profession.

On April 5, 2018, four social work alumni spoke with students and encouraged them to continue pursuing their professional goals. Tara Peters ’03, Jessica Furlonge ’04, Kara Krebs ’12 and Shelby Schaeffer ’15 shared their varying social work experiences since graduating from LHU, while encouraging students to discover their own path.

A common sentiment shared by each speaker was that they could not see themselves making a living any other way, and they wanted students to know that despite the challenges the satisfaction of knowing the magnitude of the impact a career in social work allows them to make in peoples’ lives far outweighs the negatives.

Tara Peters is an Intake Supervisor with Centre County Children & Youth Services. She shared a success story in which she helped a young girl on the verge of a drug overdose defeat the odds and go onto college.

“I worked with a teenage girl who was on track to overdose and die by 13.” Peters said. “She hated me, but she eventually graduated high school and then college and actually came back to a function and said ‘Thank you. I would’ve never done this without you.’”

“I really would struggle seeing myself doing anything else,” Peters added.

Jessica Furlonge has been an Intake Supervisor for Clinton County Children & Youth for the past two years. She talked about the challenge of trying not to take the stress of work home with her, but also talked about many of the successes a career in social work has enabled her to accomplish. She said her greatest successes are “helping and being able to reunify families.”

Furlonge was involved in handling the high-profile Jerry Sandusky sexual abuse case. “I never really testified on anything of that level before,” she said. “Aside from that there wasn’t much difference. I was just doing my job.”

Kara Krebs is currently a Medical Case Manager for Centre Volunteers in Medicine, however she recently accepted a position to become a Clinical Social Worker at Penn State University where she will be responsible for medical case management for students who are utilizing the university’s health services.

Krebs has maintained a relationship with LHU faculty since graduating and she has mentored many LHU interns over the years.

“I’m really happy with the education I got at Lock Haven and I feel like the faculty really gave me a good background,” she said. “I’m happy to come back and share my experiences with students who are in the same seat that I was once in.”

She emphasized the importance of volunteering, attending events and networking. “Social work is so much about referrals and resources and knowing what’s around you,” Krebs said.

Shelby Schaeffer is a Case Worker for York County Children, Youth & Families. She said her greatest professional joy is the feeling she gets when families tell her that things are getting better because of her.

“Being in this profession the words ‘thank you’ mean more than I ever realized.”

She also expressed her love for LHU. ““This is my home. I love it here,” she said. “I love the drive. I love the campus,” she added.

Dr. Steven Granich, Associate Professor of Social Work at LHU expressed what a joy it was to have Peters, Furlonge, Krebs and Schaeffer back on campus. “The value of having them here is immeasurable,” he said.

It was a sentiment shared by students. Especially junior social work major, Caitlyn Shepps whose professional goal is to work with people with intellectual difficulties when she graduates from LHU. “They work so hard and they balance it all, but they don’t complain,” she said. “They take in stride and do what they can to help others.”

She added, “I think it’s very important that alumni come back because a lot of times students have no idea what we want to do because social work is such a broad field. Hearing people come back and talk about their experiences and how they’ve evolved over the years help makes the picture a lot clearer for students that are about to graduate.”

Shepps also said, “As we learned social work is not easy, but in the end we’re going to be making such an impact. It’s important never to lose that passion.”

Or as Furlonge said, “Don’t ever give up. As hard as a it can sometimes be, there is always a positive.”

The benefits of being mindful Bethany Barrett Staff Writer bcb8301@lockhaven.edu Student life can sometimes feel like a nonstop race. There’s always something that you should be doing and if not, there’s something else that you could be doing. This makes it incredibly easy to get lost in the same constant thoughts, Did I study enough for that exam? Is that paper due Tuesday or Thursday? How am I going to finish all of this work by tomorrow? Although planning ahead is an essential part of being a student, too much worrying about the future can actually cause more harm than good. If we are too busy worrying about the future, it takes us away from what we can control and focus on in the now.

Mindfulness is the practice of being aware and fully in the moment. It is a tool that will help to diminish harmful thoughts, so that you can function at your very best. Not only does the act of mindfulness help to reduce stress, there are a long list of benefits to being mindful. Here is a list of just a few of these benefits.

1. High Brain Functioning According to a study done by a group of researchers at The National Institute of Health, mindfulness can lead to an increase in grey matter density within the brain.

Grey matter includes parts of the brain that deal with skills such as decision making and memory. Therefore, mindfulness can improve such abilities, and many others.

2. Helps Fight Anxiety and Depression Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy has been used as a treatment for

certain mental illnesses such as anxiety and depression. A meta-analysis done by Dr. Willem Kuyken shows that this treatment can prevent someone with depression from relapsing. Being present guides us to enjoy little moments, as well as increases our self-awareness and in turn can also positively affect close relationships. All of these benefits and more will help to positively affect your mental health.

3. Decreased “Burnout” The stress of work, studies, and other responsibilities are some of the leading causes of stress. All of these stressors can be a burden on our mental health, as sometimes life in general becomes too much to handle. This is what it means to have a “burnout.” This can cause other problems such as insomnia, loss of motivation, and a decrease in one’s immune system. Mindfulness has been proven to decrease burnout. A study done by Dr. Matthew J. Goodman, showed significant improvements in mental health and burnout scores after 93 participants took part in an eight week mindfulness-based intervention.

4. Weight Loss Mindfulness means being present in all things. This includes what is called, “mindful eating.” This means that while you are eating, you are present.

This helps to slow us down while we eat, as well as helps us to enjoy our food more. This can lead to eating less, and therefore, healthy weight loss.

All of these benefits and more are the outcome of becoming mindful.

Practicing a couple of mindfulness techniques everyday is easy, and can drastically change your mental health for the better. So enjoy your walk to class, enjoy your morning coffee, enjoy the all of the little things by living fully in the moment.

12 OPINION Battle of the Keystone state: Penguins vs Flyers Roxanne Aretta

Opinions Editor rab484@lockhaven.edu Wednesday marks the start of the first round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. The Pittsburgh Penguins will battle the Philadelphia Flyers at home in the PPG Paints Arena. Philly fans think this is the year of Philadelphia, and are hoping for another championship. But Pittsburgh’s lineup is stacked on offense and defense.

Three Penguins finished in the top 10 for points scored during the regular season. Center Evgeni Malkin finished fourth in the league with 98, Phil Kessel had 92, and Sidney Crosby finished with 89. These superstars helped their team to finish the 2017-2018 season with the most shots on net in the league, which was 2823. This stat is huge, because it shows just how great this team is at creating scoring opportunites.

Pittsburgh also had the most goals scored during power plays with 68. They scored on 26.2 percent of their power plays, while the Flyers only scored on 20.7 percent of their advantages.

Goaltender Matt Murray only had a save percentage of 90.6 percent this season, but after last year’s stellar playoff performance, I have no doubt he’ll pick up the slack. This is the most concerning factor for the Penguins, because no matter how many goals they can put in, defense is the best offense.

Though they’re my least favorite team from any sport, even I have to admit that the Flyers are a decent team. They finished the regular season only two points behind the Penguins, and earned a third-place rank for the Metropolitan division of playoffs.

Flyers captain Claude Giroux finished the regular season second in the league for points scored with 102. Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers beat Giroux by six points to claim his second Art Ross Trophy in a row. Giroux also came second in assists this year, and just like Crosby, he’s amazing at creating plays.

It wouldn’t surprise me if the Flyers threw in a few cheap punches and dirty shots at the best player in the league, Crosby. It also wouldn’t surprise me if Crosby gets mad because of taunts and bad-mouthing and throws a few elbows himseld. If you look back at previous games played between the two Pennsylvania teams, you’ll notice a lot of fighting and penalties. It’s almost a gaurantee that there will be a few scuffles throughout this series. Hopefully nobody gets injured.

OPINION The heart-warming side of Ice Shack

Opinions Editor rab484@lockhaven.edu Ice Shack sends all of its proceeds to Bald Eagle Boys Camp, which has helped boys with troubles since 1995. The boys who enter the program are often defiant towards adults and lack good role models. Since they have troubled pasts, the campers typically have negative views of themselves and other people.

The therapeutic program helps boys form positive views of themselves and their problems, aids campers with building and maintaining healthy relationships, and teaches them lifelong skills such as problem solving.

At first, the initiates learn basic camping routines such as preparing and cooking food, pitching tents, and chopping wood. The construction of their tents helps boys to understand and apply mathematics. Meal planning teaches them about nutrition, budgeting, and home economics. Each week a schedule is planned, and the boys learn writing skills.

After the campers get used to their basic routines, they are taught how to study on their own and in groups. It teaches the boys how to work in groups and take turns, and prepares them to return to conventional schools.

The mentors who run the camp teach the boys the importance of family. Once every six weeks, the campers return home to visit their families. They also go own wilderness trips that include canoeing and back-packing adventures.

Mennonite businessmen began the camp with an idea back in 1990. It opened in 1995 after much research and planning. The camp was modeled from a successful wilderness program based in Dallas, Tex. At first, there were only three campers and two chiefs who mentored the young boys at a campground in . But over time, the camp grew and now has as many as 40 campers at once. The camp accepts boys from ages nine to 16, who will graduate after successfully acquiring certain skills. The average enrollment period is 18 months.

Ice Shack opened their doors in 2006, and has been a huge Lock Haven favorite since. The most popular items include any dessert with peanut butter, especially their peanut buttercup storm, and their homemade pretzels. They also have ice cream cones, milkshakes, gelati, sandwiches, and many other items on their menu.

Track and Field Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Brian Zimmerman of the LHU men’s track and field team has been named this week’s Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Men’s Athlete of the Week.

Zimmerman soared at the prestigious Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary this past weekend as he posted Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship qualifying times in both the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints.

In the 200-meter dash Zimmerman posted the second fastest time in LHU history (only behind his own record) as he clocked a time of 21.65 which placed him ninth overall. In the 100-meter dash he finished 15th crossing the line in 10.89. Zimmerman was also a part of the 4x100meter relay squad that took sixth place.

Softball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Bekah Slattery of the LHU Softball team has been named this week’s Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Female Athlete of the Week.

Slattery was dominant in her two starts and one relief appearance last week as the Bald Eagles opened up Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Central action with sweeps of both Bloomsburg and Indiana (Pa.).

The junior gunslinger went 2-0 posting 28 strikeouts in 16 innings of play as she limited opposing batters to a .234 batting average and a 2.62 ERA. She threw two complete game gems as she struck out 12 batters vs Bloomsburg and then against Indiana (Pa.) she fanned 13 hitters.

Women’s Track & Field caps off busy weekend Matt Guiod

Graduate Assistant mag3656@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – The Lock Haven University women’s track and field team was split today between the third day of the Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary and the Millersville Metrics.

Day three of the Colonial Relays saw numerous field events and on the track only relay events were run. Seven different relays were run throughout the day.

The 4x100-meter lineup of Tatum Mosley (Harrisburg, Pa./Central Dauphin East), Morgan Sutton (Stevensville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley), Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad & Tbago/Bishop Anstey East) and Rashana Tompkins (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty H.S) took first in their heat in a time of 51.27.

Highlighting the field competition at the Millersville Metrics was Madeline Brandt (Kresgeville, Pa./Pleasant Valley) who took sixth place in the triple jump , Ary’Anna Ortolaza (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon) who took first in her heat, and eighth in the shot put and Arianna Moyer (Enola, Pa./Bucknell) who finished second in her flight and eighth in the discus throw.

On the track it was Allie Kalp (Berlin, Pa./Berlin Brothers Valley) as she placed sixth in the 100-meter hurdles, Amanda Hassinger (Mil-

roy, Pa./Mifflin County) in the 5,000-meter run as she placed seventh and Paige Kratzer (Paxinos, Pa./ Shikellamy) who finished eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. The relay squad of Rachel Grow (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run), Sarah Wirth (Cogan Station, Pa./Slippery Rock), Elizabeth Duguid (West Chester, Pa./West Chester East) and Bryn Trout (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) capped the meet with a second place finish in the 4X800meter relay.

Day 2 Colonial Relays (Friday) Tompkins once again imprinted her name in the LHU records book.

Tompkins competed in the 100-meter hurdles where she clocked a No. 5 LHU all-time mark with a time of 15.08 which also qualified her for the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships later this season.

During the indoor season, Tompkins broke the 60-meter hurdle record a total of four times and became the first Bald Eagle women’s student-athlete to break the nine second barrier in the event.

Cadie Kiser (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) ran in the 5,000-meter run where she finished seventh in her heat with a PSAC qualifying time of 18:29.42.

Brathwaite just missed a PSAC time in the 400-meter sprint as she crossed the line in 1:00.24 which was .04 off the standard.

Day 1 Colonial Relays (Thursday) Stephanie Williams (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) took second place in the University division of the hammer throw as her best mark was a PSAC qualifying throw of 136-06 feet. Williams was the top Division II thrower as the top place finisher was Division I. The Bald Eagles will now set its focus to either the Mondschein Multis hosted by Kutztown University on Thursday April 12 and Friday April 13 or the Bison Outdoor Classic hosted by Bucknell University on Saturday April 14 and Sunday April 15.

Baseball prepares for Shippensburg Samantha Wilson

Guest Writer slw2547@lockhaven.edu The 15-6 Lock Haven Bald Eagles are set to take on the 12-16 Shippensburg Raiders this weekend in a four-game series. The Bald Eagles head into the series ranked no. 18 in the country, according to the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA).

“We’ve been doing a lot of hitting drills with pitch movement,” says senior second baseman, Cayden Stover, when asked on their preparation going into this series. “We play every PSAC team the same.”

The Bald Eagles are 7-3 in conference play this season after splitting a series against the Kutztown Golden Bears this past weekend. Lock Haven sparked offensively to start the season, but took a dip against Kutztown in 30-degree weather.

Interim Head Coach, Heath Stover, said he thinks the anticipated 70-degree weather for the Shippensburg series will “heat up the bats” as well.

In the opening series of conference play, Lock Haven grabbed national attention by upsetting no. 6 in the country and former Division 2 National Champions, West Chester University, taking 3 out of the 4 game series.

The Bald Eagles tallied 45 hits in the series, scoring a total of 41 runs.

“At any time we can score. It takes the pressure away,” says freshman ace pitcher, Scott Leitholf, when asked about his confidence on the mound, early in his first collegiate season.

The four-game series against the Raiders starts Friday at Shippensburg. The series returns home to Watkins Field on Saturday with a double-header starting at 1 p.m.
