Akeley’s granddaughter speaks on family history Sam Wilson

Guest Writer slw2547@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven University held the 8th Annual Colonel Robert and Helen Burgess Terrill History Lecture in Stevenson library this past Monday.

This year’s guest speaker was Wendy Akeley Stiver, granddaughter of Archibald (Arch) Paul Akeley and community editor at The Express newspaper in Lock Haven.

The presentation lasted about an hour and traced the history of the Lock Haven community dating back to the early 1900’s. Stiver said, “Campus is almost unrecognizable” now compared to when she grew up here in the 1960’s.

Striver explained that the Archibald P. Akeley building on campus today, previously known as “The Training School,” was originally built to take the overflow of students from the Model School in 1929. Ten years later, the Model School was torn down. The bell from the first building can now be seen at the top of the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center on campus.

She explained that the Training School became the elementary school of choice in Lock Haven. Because it was on campus, the school was used for exactly what it sounded like: an elementary school that allowed young teaching students who attended Lock Haven State Teachers College to observe real classroom environments.

Archibald Akeley was the son of a minister and born in 1866 in the town of Russel, Pennsylvania within Warren County. He was the youngest of three children and had two older sisters. He graduated from Grove City College.

In 1918, Akeley married Doris Heymann and had two children, Jim and John Akeley.

Stiver described Arch Akeley was a man who focused his life on education.

He began his career as a teacher, before becoming superintendent of 125 one-teacher schoolhouses in 30 counties. He also served on the Council of Trustees for LHU from 1927 to 1957. While on that board, Akeley gathered a committee to name each of the buildings on campus.

AfterAkeley retired in 1936, he remained active on the boards of multiple civic committees in Potter County. Stiver said, “His biggest legacy was what he left for the children of Potter County.”

NEWS 3 Retiring professor gives “last lecture”; values willpower Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Retiring professor of philosophy, Dan Shaw, said “I am not here to proselytize atheism” to Lock Haven University’s global honors society Wednesday night in Ulmer Hall’s Planetarium.

Shaw has worked at LHU as a philosophy professor for 32 years. As a farewell address, Shaw was asked to lecture on what has made the largest impact on him. He chose to entitle his speech, “Why I am not a Christian.”

“Those of you who have a deep faith, and it works for you. And you feel its true to who you are. More power to you. I am however, very concerned to give students alternatives. And that’s what philosophy is all about,”said Shaw. “but it’s up to you. You’ve got to choose who you’re going to be and you have to stick with it long enough to see if it’s who you are.”

Shaw says he doesn’t believe that people adhere to beliefs on the basis of arguments. As such, he says, his comments on Christianity are largely autobiographical.

He explained that he was raised as a devout catholic choir boy.

“There was nothing I liked more than singing in a funeral mass” said Shaw. “I believed that my singing was helping the dearly departed on his or her way into heaven.”

However, Shaw says that during the first 7 years of his life, he was in the hospital 21 times with Asthma which first led him first to question his faith.

In his church organized catechism class he began to question the existence of god’s divine plan in the role of Judas in the Old Testament.

“Judas plays an absolutely crucial role in the redemption. If judas doesn’t betray jesus, jesus doesn’t die on the cross and the human race

goes unsaved,”said Shaw. “But I had a feeling for poor judas.

No one deserves hell for a finite time.”

Shaw slowly began to slide away from his belief in God through high school and immediately stopped going to church once he left for college.

While completing his undergraduate degree, Shaw’s mother became fatally ill with cancer.

“Over the period of a year, Pictured above: Dr. Dan Shaw holdshe went through the tortures of ing awards of appreciation the damned,” said Shaw.”It was devastating and terrifying, and so unfair.”

Shaw says his mother’s pain and desolation was so extreme that he simply could not believe in a good God. “I knew that I had totally lost faith in god, when I was 22, I’m now 66,” said Shaw. “I have not had a relapse since.”

The only question Shaw had for himself was, what’s going to happen when I face death?

In the fall of 2016, Shaw faced death, he had a triple bypass and a mitral valve replacement, with complications. Doctors told Shaw that he nearly died. But still, he didn’t think of god, the afterlife or fear of hell for a single second Shaw values the choice of belief and the willpower to keep with those beliefs.

“I have become who I am and there is nothing more central to human happiness than finding your unique hierarchy of values and living according to it.” said Shaw.

Pennsylvania Authors Speak At LHU Ben Ronemus

News Editor bjr1324@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University English Department hosted two visiting authors on Thursday, March 22 as part of the LHU Pennsylvania Author Reading Series.

The two authors were Catherine Zobal Dent and Silas Dent Zobal. They are a married couple who teach at Susquehanna University. They both read from their works, signed books, and spoke briefly how they juggle writing, their family, and teaching as part of their daily lives.

Catherine Zobal Dent was the first to read excerpts of her work. She read an excerpt from “Chapter 1: Babel” of her new novel entitled “Jubilee.” The passage dealt with a foreigner at an airport trying to get back to her home country. The next reading by Zobal Dent was her short story entitled “Rise,” which was about a small family trapped in their car in the snow.

Zobal Dent is an associate professor of English and Creative Writing at Susquehanna University. She debuted as an author in 2014 with her published collection “Unfinished Stories of Girls.” Pictured above: Catherine Zobal Along with being an author, she is also a translator of literature and won the 2015 French Voices Award.

Robert Pignatello named next LHU president Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Robert M. Pignatello, long-standing senior vice president at Hunter College of the City University of New York, was unanimously selected to be the next president of Lock Haven University by the Board of Governors of Pennsylvania’s State System of Higher Education on March 23.

Pignatello has over 20 years of experience in college administration and has served as Hunter College’s senior vice president for finance and administration and chief operating officer since February 2016.

“We welcome Rob Pignatello to ‘The Haven’ family,” said Council of Trustees Chair George Durrwachter. “His unique approach to higher education issues showed a great deal of depth and breadth to meet the needs of Lock Haven University. Mr. Pignatello’s experience and leadership skills will be invaluable as he transitions to the 15th presidency. I look forward to working with him to continue to tell our story and unlock the potential of our future.”

Guy Graham, a council member who chaired the presidential search committee, says he was impressed by the search process and by the quality of the candidates.

“We were tasked, through the feedback of the campus community, to find a president who could capably address enrollment and fiscal challenges, lead fundraising efforts and work with our many, various constituent groups,” Graham said. “Mr. Pignatello demonstrated to the campus that he understands the essential educational components at Lock Haven University and that he will be student-centered.”

Before Pignatello’s work at Hunter College, he worked 18 years as vice president and chief operating officer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice. During his time there he worked on committees that focused on baccalaureate degrees, graduate studies and research.

In order to improve the overall student experience, engagement and outcomes, Pignatello worked to develop and align resources with objectives to create strategies for accountabilMr. Robert Pignatello ity and outcomes.

“Lock Haven is a truly remarkable institution, and we have an exciting future before us,” Pignatello said.

“Together, we will confront the challenges that lie ahead and convert them into opportunities to even better serve our students and our region.

“I greatly anticipate working closely with the Council of Trustees, students, faculty, alumni, local leaders and System officials on fulfilling our vital mission.

I am immensely proud to be a Bald Eagle and to join the Lock Haven Dr. Michael Fiorentino Jr., and his wife, community.”

As Pignatello prepares Pam, are shown during his retirement gala to take the reins of Lock in February Haven University, Current president Michael Fiorentino Jr. reminisced about his time spent as the top executive.

“The environment at LHU is one that meaningfully engages students,” Fiorentino said. “I like to get out and walk through the campus. Just having a chat with a student or two here and there, you learn a lot. That really has been one of the highlights of being in this position.”

During Fiorentino’s presidency, the university has undergone large changes including the construction of a new residence hall, renovations to the Parsons Union Building and the addition of study rooms in the science building, PUB and library. He also implemented a three-college administrative format to increase efficiency and communication.

“The improvement in facilities makes a difference to your ability to deliver a high quality experience to students – and you have to invest in those things,” Fiorentino said. “The look and feel of the campus has an impact on recruiting and retaining students. Having the ability to move forward and actually build a science center – that without question has contributed to the academic experience of students and the ability of the faculty to do things that they really need to do.”

Dr. Donna Wilson, provost and executive vice president will assume the role of interim president at LHU on March 30. On July 1, Pignatello will officially become the president.

LHU will be holding a welcoming reception for Pignatello on April 11 at 10 a.m. at the University Commons Amphitheater.

“On My Block” Netflix Series Review Kiara Carson Staff Writer Knc9459@lockhaven.edu “On My Block” is a new TV series that was just released on Netflix about two weeks ago and has made a major impact.

This series is about four best friends living in the nitty gritty streets of Freeridge, California and are about to start high school, which becomes another challenge in their lives besides everything they have going on.

Between dodging bullets on the streets and figuring out their love lives, these teens try to stick together no matter what.

This show really highlights the importance of friendship and gives insight on what it’s like to live in a difficult neighborhood.

These friends are so much more than they appear to be in the show.

Monse Finnie is the main protagonist of the story and the only female in the group.

She’s the glue that keeps everyone togeth-

er when things get rough. She is as tough as nails when it comes to sticking up for herself and the people she loves.

Cesar Diaz is tough in a different way.

He’s the troublemaker of the group. His family has a criminal past which comes back to haunt him, ruins his chances at a bright future, and brings about the main conflict between him and his friends.

Ruben “Ruby” Martinez is an articulate young man who is always trying to look out for what’s best for everyone, especially his friend. He’s a softie at heart which comes into play when interacting with his friends.

He knows how to avoid issues and can talk his way out of any sticky situation which becomes very useful throughout the whole show.

Finally, Jamal Turner is the shy, awkward, and most honest kind of teen there is, especially in his neighborhood. He’s considered very cautious about most situations, but he does seek adventure in his life which provides a solution for one of the group’s issues.

Besides friendship, the serie really

touches upon how society in some areas works and shows the kinds of problems that happen between the characters and their neighborhood. They’ll talk about gang life, abandonment from a parent, and the price to pay for keeping secrets and telling lies to the people who matter. The show also exhibits some stereotypes abour poor neighborhoods facing numerous problems.

It specifically highlights two gangs that are at war in this small city with a multi-racial comunity sometimes also clash over serious issues. Some people might see it as offensive, but I think it’s just being based on main characters who are Hispanic, African American and even biracial. Although it might seem like a negative message about race, it really isn’t about their ethnic backgrounds; it’s really about the kids and their adventures. As you follow along with the characters, you’ll learn to understand their situations in a deep, emotional way and it might even surprise you towards the end.

Lock Haven talents performed in the Masterworks Concert Mark Matthews Staff Writer mjm2923@lockhaven.edu Many gifted musicians showcased their talents on Sunday, March 25 in the annual Masterworks concert. Taking stage were the Lock Haven Community Orchestra and Chorus. The group included high school students, LHU students, LHU faculty, and community members. The event took place in Price Performance Center Auditorium on the campus of Lock Haven University.

The concert itself was very well played by both the chorus and orchestra members. Every single member who performed deserves to be congratulated, because they all demonstrated wonderful talents that take a lot of time and practice to accomplish. One song that the Orchestra performed was “Christ the Lord has Risen Today.” It was very fitting, because the performance occurred on Palm Sunday.

Visitors were able to make donations near the entrance of the auditorium, which will go towards the operations and music rights for future performances. Giving to such a worthy group is a great way to help sustain these artists and also the music program at Lock

Haven University. Music is unique in its way of sparking emotions and speaking to us on a deep level. That is why it is crucial to keep it going, especially with the hard work and many hours the members of the chorus and orchestra give into it. Let’s go, Lock Haven music program!

Artists and Activists Team Up Mia Swales Staff Writer Mxs3279@lockhaven.edu All artists don’t just make music, perform to adoring fans, produce hit after hit, and attend award shows to max out their income.

The world has seen that some artists take their platform as entertainment stars and make it stand for something more. When disasters have struck, many in the entertainment community have come together around a worthy cause. They’ve showed their support, donated their own money, and raised money from others to help victims of hurricanes, earthquakes, and floods. They even speak out during presidential elections.

On Saturday, March 23 a number of artists stood and sang with the millennials as they demonstrated at the March for Our Lives rally, the latest event in the activist movement which started after the 18th school shooting this year took place on Valentine’s Day in Parkland, Florida, leaving 17 dead.

After tragedy struck, Parkland student Emma Gonzalez and her classmates decided to take a public stand. On March 14, students all over the U.S. participated in a school walkout to commemorate the moment of the attack.

This past weekend, an estimated 800,000 people marched in Washington, D.C. to continue to bring attention to their concerns over guns and school safety. According to the March for Our Lives website, the goal is “to demand that a comprehensive and effective bill be immediately brought before Congress to address gun issues.” The students chanted, “enough is enough” and “never again” in unison. The Washington march was mirrored in many cities throughout the country and even abroad.

Several high-profile artists from the entertainment business partici-

pated in the march, using their celebrity to support the cause. Speaking and performing in Washington were Ariana Grande, Jennifer Hudson, Miley Cyrus, Vic Mensa, Demi Lovato, Andra Day and Common, Lin - Manuel Miranda and Ben Platt. The students showed their love for the artists and the artists showed their support for the students as each presented a powerful message about taking a stand against gun violence. Jennifer Hudson said to CNN, “I love so much that they’re using their everything to make a difference.

And they know their power to say, you know what, we’re not just going to sit here. We’re going to turn this around. They know that they have the power to do that.” Hudson personally has been affected by gun violence after her mother, brother and nephew were shot and killed by her brother-in-law.

Following the march, entertainment artists took to social media with empowering messages against gun violence and mass shootings.

Demi Lovato said, “I am so proud of this generation of millennials coming together to fight for something they believe in.” Miley Cyrus posted a slew of pictures expressing her admiration for the movement. She also posted the lyrics to a song she performed at the march, “The Climb.” The lyrics say, “I can almost see it, that dream I’m dreaming, but there’s a voice inside my head saying, you’ll never reach it. Every step I’m takin’, every move I make feels lost with no direction. My faith is shakin’ but I, I gotta keep tryin,’ gotta keep my head held high.” In a caption for her social media post, Cyrus wrote, “These lyrics mean more to me now than ever. I won’t ever give up & neither will the millions that march with us today.” DJ Khaled posted a picture of the hundreds of thousands marching in Washington D.C., saying, “Bless up the young world.”

It’s good for young people to know that they have the support of these famous artists, who are using their celebrity to promote a larger important message. It shows solidarity and builds momentum for the students to keep going. With this march and the movement itself, the millennial generation is realizing that they are important and their voices can be heard.

The March for Our Lives brought together teenagers, young adults, and older people, too, united in the moment around the artistic power of music, the pain in the stories told and the lyrics sung, the sad realization of precious lives lost, and the hope that change can happen. People from many different backgrounds came together to raise their voices to make schools safer, to end gun violence, and to be the change. #EnoughIsEnough #NeverAgain

Bethany Barrett Staff writer Bcb8103@lockhaven.edu In a recent Ted Talk, Megan McCormick, a student from Denison University, spoke about her experience with self-care and how it has changed her entire life.

“It was revolutionary: The ways in which I took care of myself that I hadn’t been doing before were the ways that I came into healing,” she explained. “And I got back to 100 percent. It was an incredible process. One that I wish I could give to everyone.”

This process is one which many millennials have been actualizing. If you search “self-care” on Youtube, you will find plenty of young-adult vloggers who have shared a similar experience as McCormick.

I have come to the same conclusion about selfcare and its significance in living a healthy and happy lifestyle.

In an earlier article I had written for The Eagle Eye, “Using Self Care to Help Maintain Your Mental Health,” I shared how self-care can be used to cope with various mental illnesses.

I’ve used self-care as a way of managing my anxiety in the past and, like McCormick, the process has been healing for me.

In this column I want to share the most beneficial forms of self-care so that others may realize its importance. These steps may seem small, but can end up being, as McCormick has put it,

“revolutionary.”

1. Exercise As difficult as it can be to fit exercise into your everyday routine, it is essential to do so. This in no way means you have to get to the gym and have an extreme workout every day. Simply 15 to 30 minutes of gradual exercise at the gym can make a world of difference.

If you can’t visit the gym, you can try to get your body moving in other ways, such as taking a walk or going swimming at Zimmerli pool with a friend. Find whatever works for you.

Daily exercise will help reduce your stress level, increase your energy, and improve your emotional state by releasing endorphins in your brain. On days when you exercise, you might be able to see a change in your mood, and productivity may come easier.

2. Don’t Forget to Eat Most college students know what it’s like to have days where you wake up late, grab coffee, go to your classes and then don’t end up eating a proper meal until late afternoon. Nothing is worse for anxiety than massive amounts of coffee on an empty stomach. This is why it is so important to never miss a meal. Listen to when your body is telling you it’s hungry, and eat accordingly. Your body will thank you.

3. Create When you have spare time, it’s beneficial to create. Not only will this give you a sense of ac-

complishment, but it will give you some much needed time away from your phone. It can even be therapeutic because your focus will be put into whatever you’re creating.

This can be anything from journaling, cooking or making a mood board out of old magazine clippings. Whatever works best for you. It’s important to have fun doing something that also benefits you.

4. Work on Your Sleep Routine This can be a difficult task, especially if you’re a napper, a night owl or both. But it isn’t impossible. Try to keep with a routine. Getting the recommended amount of sleep can lower your stress level, sharpen your attention, and give you more energy.

5. Be Open With Others About How You’re Feeling Let yourself feel the good and the bad. Be open with others about how you’re feeling. This will make it easier to get help whenever you may need it, and it will keep you from becoming isolated when you’re having a hard time. If you feel like you need help, don’t be afraid to reach out to someone.

Most importantly, don’t forget to keep the routine going! Self-care is something that you have to continue to work on every day to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It’s about becoming your best self; and it starts with self-care.

Better study habits with time management

Derek Danneker Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Increasingly I find that the most precious resource in college is time.

But, it’s often the case that there is no way to find more of it, and if you’re anything like me, you’ve skipped enough classes that you’re wondering if the professor still knows you’re taking the course.

The only solution, then, is to increase the efficiency of your time. I hear the words “time budgeting” used but any word with monetary connotations makes me grasp my wallet and sigh, given that as it is, I’ll avoid it.

A tremendously successful strategy I’ve used is to sit down the day before and create a schedule. The goal behind it must be to have the best day that you’ll actually want to have. It would be nice to sit down and complete everything at once, but it’s unrealistic.

Treat yourself like a friend you’re trying to help. You wouldn’t subscribe them to the torment of a schedule with no breathing room, because they’d ignore it, as would you. Work in time to relax, to watch TV, read an enjoyable book, take a walk around town, have an extra cup of coffee, etc. Again, the point is to have the best day you’ll want to have. “Best” here, cannot mean a grueling, knock-out brawl with that essay that needs to be written.

When scheduling time to study, it often helps- even when not actually scheduling it- to take a break for 20 minutes for every hour you’re working on school work.

Often times students will say “I was in the library for 4 hours (or some arbitrary amount of time) and I just could not get this assignment done.” But how much time was actually spend working on the assignment? I’ve done the same: I’ll sit down to study but pull my phone out, then I’ll get thirsty, then I’ll wonder what someone posted on Facebook, and so the cycle goes.

Motivation, lacking as it is, acts more like a muscle that needs to be trained. Expecting to sit down and actually work 3 hours, when the most studying you did over break is move your book from one side of the room to the other, is unrealistic.

Take the time to think. But first, we should define thinking. What most people consider thinking is actually self-criticism.

“I really should study as hard as I can for 3 hours” is just self-criticism. Thinking, rather, is self-dialogue (not out loud, please keep it to yourself to avoid the awkward stares).

Ask yourself, “Is it realistic for me to actually study attentively for an entire hour?” The response may be “Of course not, I can hardly sit still for an hour.”

That is a fine response as long as it’s truthful.

“Could I handle 30 minutes then?”

“NO!” “Maybe 15 minutes of studying?”

“Ok, fine. I can try that.”

My inner voice may have gotten rather angry with me during the course of the semester.

As such, results may vary.

But wherever the start point is, at least it is honest.

OPINION Students aren’t afraid of NRA; March in Washington Evie Russell

Guest Writer elr3141@lockhaven.edu The girls beside me danced along to the music, homemade signs in their hands, block letters screaming “NEVER AGAIN.” A woman standing on the curb stopped me, telling me how much she loved my own sign and asking if she could take my picture.

After that, she melted into the crowd of thousands, a stranger - but an ally.

850,000 of us were there - mothers, children, grandparents, survivors - and together we marched.

Taking Washington D.C. by storm, we chanted, we sang, and we rejoiced. People were emotional - there was a lot of crying on March 24, but there was cheering, too, because they finally see change on the horizon.

There were so many people crammed into the streets that you could only look ahead and follow those in front of you. If you turned in a tight enough circle, you could look back and see the sea of people following you, all with their own signs.

As a 19-year-old college student, I couldn’t imagine organizing something as big as this. Yet the Parkland kids did it - less than two months after their classmates were killed before their eyes, these high school students brought nearly 1,000,000 people together to call for gun control - that number doesn’t include those who participated in over 800 sister marches around the world.

I was asked if I think anything would change because of the March For Our Lives. I really do believe it. Change won’t appear overnight, as history has shown, but it is happening.

Every time there was a break between speeches, you could hear the echoes of chanting start from the back of the crowd - “Vote them out, vote them out.”

Change is happening, slowly but surely. People have begun to take notice of the power they wield by voting.

Politicians have a choice - either recognize this change, or be voted out of office by those who do.

This change cannot happen without us, the voters. Nearly everyone who spoke stressed the importance of voting in the upcoming elections. Register to vote, educate others and encourage them to vote, vote for those who will listen to and act on our demands for change, because our lives depend on it.

The Professor’s page: Words from Lock Haven’s finest

The fate of Lock Haven University Dan Shaw

Professor of Philosophy dshaw@lockhaven.edu Fellow members of the LHU community: As I prepare to retire at the end of this semester, I want to share with you my thoughts about the future of the University. Having a new President coming aboard, and two Deans newly in place, it is the perfect opportunity to take stock of where we have been and where we are going. The following is my modest attempt to do so.

As has happened at so many campuses across the country, the past decade has witnessed a rapid decline in the Humanities programs at this institution. First it was Economics, then Philosophy, then Foreign Languages and Theater, with several other majors either put in moratorium or facing possible cancellation. One of our most outstanding features, the International program, is now seriously underfunded.

Shortly after I arrived here, more than 30 years ago, “U.S. News and World Report” named us as one of the most outstanding public liberal arts institutions in the Northeast. This is no longer the case.

In a period of eight years, the Philosophy program has shrunk from five full time positions to one this coming Fall. As colleagues either retired or departed for other institutions, they have not been replaced, and Philosophy is now playing a smaller and smaller role in a shrinking General Education program. While some of you may be relieved that you won’t have to take philosophy, you will be missing out on a singular opportunity to take stock of yourself, and what is important to you.

Finding a job is indeed one of the primary goals of getting a college education. I don’t mean to minimize the importance, and exemplary quality, of the professional programs here at LHU. But coming to know yourself, and learning to live the good life outside of your employment, should also be seen as important. Students substantially define themselves in their undergraduate years, in ways that they will carry with them for the rest of their lives. The Humanities are crucial to learn how to live well.

So, when further cuts are proposed in the Liberal Arts, and the Gen-

eral Education program, I urge you all, both students and faculty, to raise your voices in dissent. Students should avail themselves of the opportunities still available to go on the International Exchange, to take a Philosophy course, to major in one of the Liberal Arts programs that still exist at LHU. Faculty should vigorously defend their colleagues in other programs, and not limit their focus to the fate of their own.

I also hope that the new administrators of this institution will resist the national trends.

I ask you to value and protect the Humanities, as wellsprings of meaning for all of our students. Support the International program, and see that more of our students go on the Exchange. Perhaps by distinguishing ourselves from our sister institutions, we can attract more students. But, even if we don’t, we will be discharging our responsibilities to them in a more fulfilling way.

Finally, I make an urgent appeal to the administration to replace some of the philosophers who have departed in recent years (including myself). All of us have asked ourselves “What is the meaning of life?”

Philosophy is the primary discipline that addresses this issue directly, and at length. It is a question that becomes particularly prominent in our college years, and more students should be able to take philosophy courses, which better enable them to answer that question for themselves.

Leitholf threw a two-hit gem on Friday, which helped the Bald Eagles down No. 6 West Chester, 15-1. The win capped a series-opening sweep of the PSAC East preseason favorites.

Leitholf, the Bald Eagles true-freshman right-hander went the distance (7 IP) and allowed just two hits. He had a no-hitter going through four and finished with three strikeouts.

Kilian helped power the Bald Eagles to a 2-0 record last week as Lock Haven outscored its opponents 28-15. In all, Kilian dished out 15 assists and netted one goal, scoring a total of 16 points.

Kilian helped control the offense in both games. In the contest vs Slippery Rock she dished out a staggering eight assists and made her only shot of the game count as she scored one goal. On the road at Gannon, she continued her hot hand as she assisted on seven goals.

DeHaas, Leiholf sweep weekly PSAC awards Ryan Bogaczyk

Graduate Assistant rjb7979@lockhaven.edu Senior Kolby Dehaas (Coeur D’alene, Idaho/Wenatchee Valley Community College) and freshman Scott Leitholf (Dillsburg, Pa/Northern York) of the Lock Haven University baseball team have been named the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) East Athlete and Pitcher of the Week.

Both players were instrumental in a huge weekend for LHU. Over the four-game series with No. 6 West Chester, where the Bald Eagles dominated the defending national champs and won 3 of 4 games, DeHaas went 7 for 14 at the plate and hit .500. He recorded a .571 slugging percentage and a .563 on-base percentage, he had one double and six total RBIs. On Friday in the sweep of West Chester to open the series, DeHaas went 6 for 8 with three runs scored and six RBIs. He was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in game one and a perfect 4 for 4 with three RBIs and a run scored in game two to cap the Friday sweep.
