HAC Sponsoring Wing Night and Trivia Gina Spinner

PR Manager grs3528@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven University’s Haven Activities Council is sponsoring a free wing night and trivia contest for students to be held on Wednesday, March 28, 2018 at 6:00 pm in the Parsons Union Building, Eagle Wing Cafe.

Students are encouraged bring a friend and enjoy allyou-can-eat barbecue, medium and hot wings (while supplies last).

Prizes will be given to trivia winners. In the past,prizes have included Starbucks, McDonald’s and Sheetz gift cards.

Kimberly Harris, Assistant Director of HAC Student Activities said, “HAC’s Wing Night isa great place for students to gather with friends, enjoy chicken wings, and drink rootbeer while playing Team Feud for a chance to win! HAC Wing Nights are the last Wednesday of the month and are free for LHU Students.”

HAC is a part of the Student Activities Office. They organize events for students at the university which include movie nights, games, family days and more. LHU to hold Third Annual Business Symposium Ben Ronemus

News Editor bjr1324@lockhaven.edu The third annual Business Symposium will be held at Rogers Gymnasium Friday, The event begins at 8:30 am and continues until noon. The theme for 2018 is “Innovation Wins.”

The Business Symposium is presented by The Stephen Poorman College of Business, Information Systems, and Human Services. It is sponsored by Savoy Contract Furniture.

The featured speaker is Joseph Galli, Jr. He is the former President of Worldwide Power Tools and Accessories, Black and Decker, President and Chief Operating Officer of Amazon.com, and Director and Chief Executive Officer of Newell Rubbermaid, Inc. He is currently the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Techtronic Industries Company Group.

The Business Symposium will have experts in the field engaging in panel discussion and question and answer sessions.

After the event, attendees may follow along to the Lock Haven University Business Hall of Fame induction luncheon at the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center.

Granddaughter of Akeley’s Namesake to Speak Ben Ronemus

News Editor bjr1324@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven University is hosting the 8th annual Colonel Robert and Helen Burgess Terrill lecture on Monday from 2 to 3 pm The event is being held in the Stevenson Library.

The guest speaker this year is Wendy Akeley Stiver, of the Lock Haven State College class of 1977. She worked on the campus newspaper during her time at the college, followed by two years working as a reporter and editor for the Renovo Record.

She is currently community editor of the Lock Haven newspaper The Express.

She is a native of Lock Haven and the granddaughter of Archibald Paul Akeley, the school buildings namesake.

Wendy Akeley Stiver will be speaking on “Arch Akeley: The Man Behind the School’s Name”.

The lecture is free to the public.

Evannah Phan Arts & Entertainment Editor Etp7162@lockhaven.edu In this week’s segment of Talent at the Haven, we will be featuring a talented Lock Haven University pianist named Emily Coyner.

Coyner is currently a sophomore double majoring in Applied Music and Health Sciences with a concentration in Pre-Physician Assistant Studies.

Coyner was raised in Muncy, PA but was originally born on the West coast in Gig Harbor, Washington. Coyner stems from a family that dabbles in music but is the only one to pursue it professionally. Coyner’s involvement in piano began approximately 10 years ago. Her mother was a former piano player and encouraged Coyner to take on the hobby upon moving to PA. Though Coyner did not have a say in whether or not she wanted to partake in piano lessons, she quickly began to fall in love with it.

Coyner notes that a good number of her musical inspirations comes from rock music. She especially appreciates Kurt Cobain and his numerous contributions to the Alternative Rock genre. On to a whole different spectrum, Coyner also enjoys the classical musical stylings of Chopin. Coyner

believes Chopin’s piano pieces have more thought and emotion in it versus other pieces of classical music that she has encountered before.

You can find bands like the Foo Fighters, My Chemical Romance, and Panic! at the Disco on Coyner’s playlist. Her top songs at the moment are ‘Dirty Water’ by Foo Fighters, ‘Golden Days’ by Panic! at the Disco, and ‘I Blame Myself’ by Sky Ferreira.

Coyner often plays Classical music on the piano and specifically prefers pieces from the Romantic era. She does not currently write her own music but she loves to play her favorite songs from other artists on the piano.

Being an Applied Music major coupled with being a Health Sciences major sounds daunting, but Coyner challenges that ideas and excels in both areas of study. The key to her success in both Music and Science is consistency, tenacity, and committedness. Coyner recalls that she has a piano lesson once a week every week to keep herself on track and accountable.

Coyner seems to be a strong pianist with a clear view on technicality and theory. Whenever she starts a new piece, she focuses on the backbone of the composition. The backbone of the composition would consist of things like rhythm, fingering, etc. Once she is comfortable with the piece, she will make slight adaptations to it and take some inspiration from other musicians who have formerly performed the piece.

If you are interested in hearing Coyner perform, you are in luck! She will be performing at Lock Haven University’s Margery Krevsky Dosey Celebration of the Arts Evening. This event will take place on March 22 at 7:00 pm in the Poorman Ballroom in the Durrwachter Alumni Conference Center. It is recommended that everyone is seated by 6:45 pm There will be light refreshments to follow the performances.

Darth Vader only has 12 minutes of screen time in the original Star Wars.

The new movie A Wrinkle in Time features well-known actors including Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling.

The main character is Meg Murry, played by Storm Reid.

The film tells the story of a middle schooler who struggles with doubts about her self-worth.

Her parents are physicists, and both her brother and she are also brilliant. During the story, Meg’s

father goes missing. As Meg and others search for him, they all eventually end up in different worlds where they come face to face with the power of evil. In order for Meg to go back to Earth, she has to embrace herself and who she is.

The movie was released on March 9 and according to CNN, it brought in $33 million during its opening weekend. But it has received mixed reviews from critics.

According to the family-friendly website CommonSenseMedia.org, some viewers have said it’s not what they hoped for and expected.

Others said it’s empowering, but it’s not for little children, more suited to teenage audiences. Still others report frankly that the movie was boring.

The movie is based on a novel.

Reviewers say the book and the film are consistent, in that the images imagined from the book is made concrete on the screen.

I say that if you want a positive message about being in touch with yourself and becoming one with the universe, then this is the movie for you to see.

Jhene Aiko’s “Trip” Album Review Kiara Carson Staff Writer Knc9459@lockhaven.edu If you love listening to music while hanging out with your friends and just to relax yourself, then you need to listen to Jhené Aiko’s new album Trip.

Aiko is a female singer-songwriter that has been in the music industry since 2011 and is now a huge success. With five albums out in the world and popular collaborations she’s done with many other musicians, Aiko has definitely made a name for herself.

At the end of 2017, Aiko released her new album and it is mind-blowing as it was intended to be hence the name of the album and the soundtracks.

Not only are the songs great, but the transition between each song from one another is smooth and builds to the next song whenever each song ends so I suggest listening to the album in order for a great listening experience.

These songs open up your mind and sub-consciousness to a whole new level which is also to be expected. Aiko spent two years recording each and every song that she wrote while under the influence of marijuana and psychedelics which makes everything so much more interesting.

Some songs are all about romance and her experiences with the men that have come into her life, but the rest are about how the drugs have made her feel. You can tell she really has some serious

thoughts about how life can be and often displays her interest in death if you listen very closely to what she’s singing.

For example, in her song “Jukai”, Aiko will mention things like death and hell. She’ll talk about how much she welcomes death because its natural and peaceful in its own way. Her own death is also talked about being so peaceful that she wonders if it’ll affect anyone at all.

Hell is talked about not being an actual place, but its certain people that could be from her past or present and discuss how they are evil because they don’t know how to love properly. It’s also noticeable that she has a lot of personal demons within herself that she expresses throughout the whole album.

In some of her songs like “Jukai” and “When We Love”, you’ll notice at the end of each song, there is a conversation between Aiko and an unknown man which seems to be an outlet to tell her story about those personal demons about her love life and drugs.

It’s thrilling because she’s finally built that trust with her fans to let them know what’s been going on throughout the course of her life.

Thankfully, it’s not all doom and gloom with Aiko as she also creates songs that involve her psychedelic trips which are just peaceful and relaxing to listen to like in her songs “LSD” and “Sativa”. Overall, this whole album is great to understand another individual more personally, to have a great musical experience, and to actually comprehend the psychological thrill to her songs.

Colleges Against Cancer club organize annual fundraiser Catherine Brown

Staff Writer cvb5480@lockhaven.edu Every year in the spring, the Colleges Against Cancer club, sponsored by the American Cancer Society, begins to plan and put on their Relay for Life. Relay is one of the largest events on campus; the fundraiser running from 6 pm until 6 am the next day, consists of games, raffles, and moving ceremonies to honor and memorialize loved ones, all led by club members behind the scenes after months of planning, fundraising, advertising.

What is described by the club members as a “twelve hour party”, dozens of teams organized by other clubs on campus, come together to raise money with games the day of, as well as other fundraisers during the weeks leading up to the big event.

Last year at the end of the event, there was over $24,000 raised to go back to the American Cancer Society to help cancer patients and their families pay for treatments, as well as provide lodging and transportation, and ultimately give hope to find a cure.

“Having Relay for Life here on campus brings the student body and faculty together for one night of awareness, fundraising, and hope,” says Hannah Zerbe, a third year CAC member and first time Relay chairman of the club.

Every member of CAC has a reason they participate, with more than one million new cases of cancer diagnosed every year, unfortunately, it is rare to meet a person who has not had their life touched in some way by the disease.

Here are some of the risk factors women face Getting older The risk for breast cancer increases with age; most breast cancers are diagnosed after age 50.

Genetic mutations Inherited changes (mutations) to certain genes, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2. Women who have inherited these genetic changes are at higher risk of breast and ovarian cancer.

Early menstrual period Women who start their periods before age 12 are exposed to hormones longer, raising the risk for breast cancer by a small amount.

Late or no pregnancy Having the first pregnancy after age 30 and never having a full-term pregnancy can raise breast cancer risk.

Starting menopause after age 55 Like starting one’s period early, being exposed to estrogen hormones for a longer time later in life also raises the risk of breast cancer.

Not being physically active Women who are not physically active have a higher risk of getting breast cancer.

Lock Haven students spend their spring break helping Roxanne Aretta

Opinions Editor rab484@lockhaven.edu Many Lock Haven University students spent their 2018 spring break helping others. The undergraduate and graduate physician assistant programs flew to Harmons, Jamaica to provide medical assistance and build houses. Sisters of Alpha Sigma Tau have been busy raising money for this year’s Relay For Life. Members of LHU New Life made the journey to Puerto Rico with the Big Woods Bible Church to build houses and serve those in need through their love of God, and God’s love. Some students in Christian Student Fellowship (CSF) went to Kentucky on a missions trip and completed various tasks to benefit many people.

“We went to Bear Branch, Kent., which is one of the hardest places to live in the U.S.,” said junior communications major and CSF member Kylee Doyle. “We did many different things in the community, including visiting senior centers, adults with special needs, and making home visits. We also volunteered at their food pantry and coffee shop, picked up trash, and washed playground equipment at a park that had been flooded.”

Doyle said, “(We) learned how to do construction by working on fixing up the old school we were sleeping in so more people after us can continue to pursue the mission. I loved spending my spring break serving those in need. The trip made me realize that we don’t have to travel far to find people who need help. We can all make a difference right in our own communities.”

The sorority Alpha Sigma Tau (AET) is one of the many LHU groups participating in Relay For Life on March 23 and 24. AET’s Director of Philanthropy Kylie Bowes said, “A part of why I wanted this position is because of how much Relay For Life means to me. After participating in Relay for the first time last year, I knew immediately I wanted to be the one who is in charge of this amazing event.”

Bowes, a sophomore communications major, raised $350 for the event this year as of Wednesday.

“The event is a beautiful whirlwind of emotion, energy, and fun!” she said. “Cancer is a sad subject but Relay isn’t about the pain of losing someone. It’s about honoring those we have lost, those who are currently fighting, and those who have beaten the disease.”

Relay for Life starts at 6 p.m. in the Student Recreation Center on Friday and ends at 6a.m., Sat.

Every year, The PA program takes a spring break trip to Jamaica to provide aid to those who are in need. Not only do the health science majors build relationships with their peers, the people of Jamaica, and their professors, but they get to help build houses, too.

After 2018’s trip, junior Dan McGonigal said, ”Last week in Harmons we spent our time building houses, running a clinic, and building relationships. This year being my second trip, I felt more comfortable getting to know the Jamaicans personally and I’m glad I was able to foster new relationships. It was a wonderful experience and I already can’t wait to return next year.”

Big Woods Bible Church and members of LHU New Life went to Puerto Rico to build houses for those impacted by Hurricane Irma, the intense storm which left nearly all of the island without power, and many people without houses in fall of 2017.

“The act of showing up and willing to serve rather than be served is a powerful thing,” junior biology major Sharon Valerio said. “It’s what God does for each of us and it’s what we’re called to do for others as children of God. We were all floored by the blessings we recieved back from the people of Puerto Rico in their encouragement, genuine prayers, and generosity toward each of us.”

Daniel Nauta, a secondary education major in his senior year, said, “The Lord called us to go be both a blessing and to be blessed by our brothers and sisters of Puerto Rico. He used us to exhibit His love toward His creation and to call humanity back to Him through the Sacrifice of Jesus Christ.”

“To see the impact on someone’s life that we had is just amazing,” Alyssa Felty, freshman sports administration major said. “We got to put roofs over families and changed their lifes forever... God worked in so many ways throughout the trip. God is good!”

Freshman athletic training major Kasey Cole said, “It was a life-changing experience where we got to serve people in the midst of disaster for the glory of God.” Continued on Page 12

In front of an all-time NCAA tournament record crowd of 19,776 fans, Perry – already an All-American (LHU’s 41st) – fell to top-seed Zain Retherford of Penn State, 6-2 in the NCAA Division I wrestling Championship final, capping a remarkable run at the tournament and his all-around brilliant career in the crimson and white.

Perry and Retherford also left little doubt as to who the nation’s two best 149-pounders were. Retherford scored two takedowns in the first period and led 4-1 before stretching it to a 5-1 lead after two. Retherford, who became a three-time national champion, added a riding time point on the way to a 6-2 win.

Perry, the No. 15 seed, became the first ever No. 15 seed to advance to the national finals at any weight class. He did it dramatic fashion as he took down the No. 2 seed, a former NCAA champ and a third returning All-American. Perry’s dramatic run and spot in the finals only solidified his excellence.

Softball Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Kayla Gee of the LHU softball team has been named this week’s Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Female Athlete of the Week.

Gee was dominant on the mound for the Bald Eagles on their spring break trip to Clermont, Florida. Kayla went a perfect 4-0 on the week as she pitched 26 2/3 innings allowing three earned runs while striking out 22 batters.

Highlighting her tremendous pitching was the game against Southern Connecticut State where she pitched a complete game one hitter.

In the contest she struck out eight batters. In all she scattered 20 hits while staying in command and only walking 10 batters and throwing no wild pitches.

It is without question that Perry’s career was a major influence on the resurgence of the LHU wrestling program. He clinched his All-American status with a win in yesterday’s quarterfinals.

Perry closed the season with a 32-4 record and finished with a 104-32 career record. The 104 wins are tied for the 13th most in school history.

Earlier today, Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale) capped his All-American run with a fourth-place finish at 165 pounds.

Perry and Marsteller serve as LHU’s 40th and 41st all-time All-Americans, respectively. Their performances marked the first time since 1988 that the Bald Eagles had two wrestlers finish among the top-four at the national tournament. It’s also marked the first time LHU has had multiple All-Americans at the same tournament since 2002.

As team, LHU finished 16th overall with 35 points, marking the highest team finish since 2002 (19th, tie).

Tonight’s NCAA championship round officially closed what has been a historic 2017-18 season for LHU wrestling.

Cheyney drops out of Division II Mia Swales

Staff Writer mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Cheyney announced on March 20 that they will be withdrawing from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) and drop their NCAA Division II status.

According to the universities press release, in taking these actions within their athletic department their goal is to maintain financial stability for their university. The university for mens and womens basketball along with their volleyball team will join another athletic conference association. In this journey their goal for their teams is to build stronger programs. In the time being for the 2018-2019 school year these teams will be independent.

The men’s team went 2-23; 2-19 in the conference and the women’s team finished their season 6-22; 4-18 in the conference. In this transition there will be many athletes affected by the change. The men’s team had 14 athletes three seniors, three freshmen, three sophomores and five juniors. While their women’s team had 12 athletes, one senior, fivefreshman, two sophomores and four juniors.

Cheyneys Men’s Basketball team was led by freshmen. Redshirt freshman Lewis Jeff was their leading scorer with 297 points for the season averaging 11 points a game. Behind him was freshman St. Juste Cliff with 238 points averaging 9 points a game. The women’s team was led by senior TaKayla Ellis she had 390 points, averaging 14 points a game running up behind her was junior Yasmine Dorrielan with 260 points averaging 9 points a game.

ALL-AMERICAN: Chance Marsteller finishes 4th at NCAA Championships Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu CLEVELAND – All-American Chance Marsteller (New Park, Pa./Kennard-Dale) of the Lock Haven University wrestling team capped a sensational season with a fourth-place finish at 165 pounds today at the 2018 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships in Cleveland.

Marsteller went 5-2 in his NCAA tournament debut and became LHU’s 41st All-American. Ronnie Perry (Christiana, Pa./Solanco) who will compete in tonight’s 149-pound finals is also an All-American. It marks the first time since 1988 that the Bald Eagles will have two guys finish among the top-four at the national tournament. It’s also the first time LHU has had multiple All-Americans at the same tournament since 2002.

For Marsteller, his All-American run put an exclamation point on a special season. He finished the year at 44-4 overall.

His 44 wins set a single-season school record.

Marsteller opened today’s action in the consolation semifinals vs. David McFadden of Virginia Tech.

Despite a scramble late in the first period, Marsteller and McFadden remained scoreless after the opening period. An early second-period escape gave McFadden - who started down - the 1-0 lead after two periods. Starting the third period down, Marsteller hit a quick three-point move with an escape and takedown, and took a 3-1 lead. McFadden earned an escape late in the bout, but a second Marsteller takedown paved the way for the workmanlike 5-3 victory.

The win over McFadden pushed Marsteller, the No. 9 seed, into the third-place bout.

In the third-place bout, Marsteller fell to No. 10 seed Evan Wick of Wisconsin. Marsteller started the second period in the bottom position leading 4-1 after two first-period takedowns, but Wick caught him in a cradle early in the second and earned the fall (3:19).
