Presidential Search Committee submits final two Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu The Presidential Search Committee finished their task, Monday, in refining their choices to the final two candidates, Bryan Depoy and Robert Pignatello, whose names will be sent the Board of Governors for final consideration.

On March 14, the Board of Governors will continue the interview process in Harrisburg with a final selection to be determined by the end of the month.

Bryan Depoy is currently the vice president for academic affairs and chief academic officer at Lake Erie College, Painesville Ohio, where he has worked for three years. Including a brief term as interim president. Before moving to Ohio, he was the dean of the College of Creative Arts and Communication at Youngstown State University and assistant dean of the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at Southeastern Louisiana University.

Depoy holds a doctorate degree in music from Florida State University, a master of Music degree from the University of New Mexico, and a bachelor of music degree from Indiana University School of Music.

Depoy’s explained, during his open forum with students, he never

thought he would be an administrator but believes that he can draw from previous employments to improve the retention and general experience of students at Lock Haven University “I got into this business to be a teacher, and that’s who I am at heart,” said Depoy.

Depoy says that during his time at Florida State University, he understood what it was to have a life-transforming tenure as a student. Today, he wants to craft an administration that can bring it about. “the Collegiate experience goes on beyond just the classroom, goes beyond just the city, but when you take the whole comprehensive experience of being a student, that defines who you are and if it’s done very well it should shape you and lay the groundwork for a wonderful future,”said Depoy One such piece he takes particular pride in, as vice president and academic officer at Lake Erie College, is “we actually listen to what employers are saying,”said Depoy.

Depoy explained that student’s future bosses want them to be able to communicate effectively, succeed in a team environment, and think strategically and autonomously.

Depoy has then crafted programs to answer these needs.

Specifically, Depoy enjoys working with students to see their strengths and weaknesses.

“Every decision I make, I try to answer this question: how does this define the student experience?”said Depoy.

Robert Pignatello Coming at these same types of problems through a different approach is rival candidate, Robert Pignatello.

Pignatello has served as the senior vice president for finance and administration and chief operating officer at Hunter College, The City University of New York (CUNY), for two years. Before his tenure at Hunter College, he served as senior vice president for finance and administration and the chief operating officer at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, CUNY, for 10 years. Pignatello worked at John Jay College for 8 years prior to that position.

Pignatello holds a master of public administration degree from Rutgers University and a bachelor’s degree in political science and public administration from Montclair State University. He is a candidate for Doctor of Education in higher education leadership and management at St. Peter’s University, he is expected to complete it this year.

“I have a firm belief in the power of education and the power of public education to change lives,”said Pignatello during his open student forum.

Pignatello says he identifies with Lock Haven University student’s struggle to maintain enrollment during a time of financial difficulty.

Pignatello’s parents were immigrants, he was the first of his family to go to college. His father worked as a custodian and at a factory job where he “scrimped and saved” to send Pignatello to the local public university.

“I’m going to help you stay here,” said Pignatello.

He says many times he finds that the reasons people leave universities are for financial reasons.

“One of my passions is moving those financial obstacles,” said Pignatello During his time at John J. College, he developed an online bookstore

Pignatello recognizes the necessity for universities to change during times of decreased enrollment, when the traditional idea of universities getting all their financial needs met by students fresh out of high school is moot.

“That pipeline is drying up. We have an imperative to re-evaluate our programs and how we reach other kinds of students… The university system is going through a lot of changes and you need a leader that understands how systems work, how they can work well and how Lock Haven can position itself better for the future,” said Pignatello.

The Presidential Search Committee was chaired by Trustee Guy Graham and its membership included George Durrwachter, Matt Girton, Mark Cloud, Cindy Allen, Trevor Dietz, Daniel Elby, Jill Mitchley, Lynn Gray, Rich Heimer, Deana Hill, Nicole Rall-Miller, and Ed Wright, representing the many constituent groups of the university.

Resource members included Dr. Michael Driscoll, Indiana University of Pennsylvania president; state Rep. Mike Hanna, Board of Governors member; and Peter Garland and Lois Johnson of the PASSHE Chancellor’s Office. The committee was assisted by Richard Allen and Dana Cohick of RPA Inc., an executive search and consulting firm.

“I am extremely thankful for the hard work and dedication of our committee that worked as a cohesive team in reviewing a strong pool of candidates on an accelerated schedule,” Graham said. “The four candidates brought to campus last week were uniquely qualified for the position with their individual skill sets and experience. I am very pleased with the selection of Bryan DePoy and Robert Pignatello and am confident that either of them will be able to provide the leadership needed to continue the legacy of excellence at Lock Haven University.”

Haven Activites Council recieves national award Ben Ronemus News Editor bjr1324@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University Haven Activities Council recently won an award for a video featuring the annual Golf Cart Parade.

The Golf Cart Parade is a tradition that occurs at Lock Haven every Homecoming. Various clubs decorate golf carts and parade them down Fairview Street. This year, 2000 people watched and participated in the parade.

A video of the 2017 Golf Cart Parade was

submitted to a contest held by the National Association for Campus Activities. The contest, Your Best Campus Tradition, depends on online votes by students at member colleges and universities to pick a top school tradition out of a group of finalists.

The two other finalists competing against LHU for the award were Bradely University in Illinois and Gettysburg College in South Central Pennsylvania. The contest has two categories, one for schools with over five thousand in students and one for schools with less than five thousand students. LHU won the under five thousand in student population category.

As the victor, LHU may write an article for the Campus Activities Programming magazine. LHU will also receive a one thousand dollar cash reward to put towards the 2018 Homecoming Golf Cart Parade and a spot at the 2019 NACA National Convention.

In the video there are highlights of the construction of the golf carts as well as clips of the parade down Fairview Street.

The video mentions the uniqueness and popularity of the tradition in the LHU community. Students Kylee Doyle, Mike Williams, and Rachel Capece were involved in the shooting of the video.

of 140 people in the audience, which is a really superior number, considering it’s the first annual event. Sam Signor and Mitchell Coakley were big roles in organizing the occurrence. It was very beneficial towards the Salvation Army as Morse points out, “Without fundraisers or volunteers we would have no program.”

On March 3rd, the Avenue 209 Coffeehouse that is close to Lock Haven’s campus hosted the first annual “Haven Mic-Night”. This event included musical performances by many Lock Haven students. It was sponsored by Thrivent Financial and Lock Haven University SAAC (Student-Athlete Advisory Committee). All proceeds benefited the Salvation Army’s After School Program.

The program’s director Kirsten Morse said, “Our after school program is dedicated to providing social interaction and education assistance to the youth in our community.” Morse has been serving the Salvation Army for five years now. “The money raised from tonight’s event,” Morse continues. “Will be used to purchase newer and more supplies that we are lacking in the program as well as numerous other fun things for the children.”

Evannah Phan Arts & Entertainment Editor Etp7162@lockhaven.edu Nick Ide is a charismatic 22-year-old graduate student majoring in Sports and Exercise Physiology at Lock Haven University. He originates from Tunkhannock, PA, and is part of a small family. He is a vocalist as well as a self taught guitarist. He is accompanied by Sam Signor (vocalist + lead/rhythm guitar), Joey Spallinger (guitar + drums), and Bobby George (lead + rhythm guitar). The group has coined themselves as the “White Collar Society” and are from different walks of life. Ide describes their music genre as a mixture of Pop and Rock. They have written quite a few original songs but mostly cover popular songs that people would recognize.

Ide is very passionate about music and has a deep-rooted commitment to the purity of the art itself. Ide is invested in his music and makes music for the art of it and does not want to pursue it for the fame or money.

Ide has been singing for as long as he can remember and found it to be an amazing escape. He wants to provide that same feeling for everyone that hears his music. His over-

Ide is not only a talented musician, but he also keeps himself busy by running and working out since he was a former track and field member in his undergraduate years. You can also catch Ide faithfully volunteering at the Salvation Army After-School Program.

By this point you might be asking yourself, “How can I see him and his group performing live?” Well, you can catch a show from his band all around town. They have performed at Avenue 209, The Edge, and Hangar 9. They have been on a short hiatus but will be back at The Edge for Open Mic nights on Wednesday evenings. Ide plans on taking his music career further in the future by creating a social media page and a Youtube page. Be on the look out for his future shows and musical endeavors.

Ide describes his creative process as very free-flowing and credits his parents to being really supportive of his singing outlet. He says that he just messes around with chords and starts singing about however he feels in that current moment in time.

Henry’s Law Play Review: Catherine Brown Staff Writer Cvb5480@lockhaven.edu In chemistry, Henry’s Law is a gas law that states: At a constant temperature, the amount of a given gas that dissolves in a given type and volume of liquid is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas in equilibrium with that liquid. At Lock Haven University in the Countdown Theatre, Feb. 28 through March 4, Henry’s Law was a quirky-turned-heart-wrenching play about cyber bullying and teen suicide. Second time University Players director Rebecca Glincman chose the play to call attention to the issue, “I feel like it such a big

problem that I like to bring light to, especially with our generation.”

Christian Girton and Paige Mitcheltree play close siblings Max and Annie, respectively, dealing their own every day struggles in high school and how it affects their lives and relationship outside class.

Max, a star science student, faces rumors circulating online after refusing an advance from a popular girl in school, ultimately ending in him taking his own life. Mitcheltree steals the show in a final scene with a monologue dedicated to her character’s late older brother.

A real portrayal of the way other people’s words can change a life, sprinkled with humor, this small scale production, tugs at the heart strings and makes you think.

Now, the Oscar show is almost four hours long.

Hollywood’s biggest night has now come and gone. The Academy Awards, commonly called the Oscars, celebrated their 90th anniversary on Sunday. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel came back for the second year in a row to host the live telecast.

Kimmel started the show by addressing last year’s mishap. For those of you who don’t know, last year’s presenters, Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, announced “La La Land” for the Best Picture Award, but in reality “Moonlight” had won, but that’s live TV for you.

In the first minutes of this year’s show, Kimmel warned the audience: “This year, when you hear your name get called, don’t get up right away. Give us a minute.”

With many of Hollywood’s power elite now in the hot seat due to sexual harassment allegations, Kimmel used the circumstances to humorous effect. Talking about the nominated film “The Shape of Water,” Kimmel said, “We will remember this year as the year men screwed up so badly, women started dating fish.”

As expected, the celebrities turned out in glamorous fashion.

Many wore metallics, red, black or white. Some choose their outfits to stand for a political cause or to represent some aspect of their personal heritage. For example, Tiffany Haddish, the “Girls Trip” star, wore a gown on the red carpet to honor her Eritrean heritage and fulfill a promise to her father.

Haddish told CNN, “He said one day I would end up here, and if I ever made it to the Oscars, I should honor my people.”

Later in the show, Haddish and “Bridesmaids” star Maya Rudolph appeared together to present the award for Documentary Short and Live Action Short Film. By this points, Haddish was wearing a

$4,000 Alexander McQueen white dress with a beaded neckline. She had joked on “Saturday Night Live” about wearing this dress to any and all formal events, to make it worth her investment. The comic interplay between Haddish

and Rudolph showed a great deal of realness, laughter and style.

It was also a night celebrating musicalsoundtracks, with several legendary performers taking the stage. Mary J. Blige performed her song “Mighty River” from her Netflix movie “Mudbound.” Common wrote the song “Stand Up for Something” with Diane Warren, and Common and Andra Day gave a powerful performance. Bernal, Miguel and Natalia Lafourcade sang “Remember Me” from “Coco.”

Sufjan Stevens soothingly sang “Mystery of Love” from “Call Me

By Your Name.” And for the In Memorium segment honoring notables who had died this past year, Eddie Vedder sang Tom Petty’s “Room at the Top.” There were so many great musical moments on Hollywood’s biggest night, but the performance that got a standing ovation was Keala Settle, who moved the audience with her strong vocals for “This Is Me” from “The Greatest Showman.” The song exemplifies self-love and the journey to understand and accept who you are. As Settle sang it, “I am who I am meant to be… this is me.”

SHOCKER ALERT - Kobe Bryant, the Los Angeles Lakers star and 5x NBA Champion took home an Oscar for his Short Animated Film, “Dear Basketball.” The movie “The Shape of Water” took home the Best Picture statue (and this year there were no mishaps), Also, Jordan Peele was the first AfricanAmerican to win the Best Original Screenplay Oscar, for his box-office breaking hit, “Get Out.” It was a night of ease with no negativity. A night of celebration, laughter, and a few groundbreaking moments for history- moments that may lead to more diversity in Hollywood. It’s safe to say it was a good night for the Academy.

Adventuring at Ricketts Glen state park Kylee Doyle Guest Writer Kld8928@lockhaven.edu Imagine being surrounded by the calming sounds of water flowing steadily down a hill. The vibrant greens and the earthy browns decorate the surrounding forest. Rather than joining the hustle and bustle of other students heading to the beach for Spring Break, spend a more peaceful day at a closer location: Ricketts Glen State Park. Named after the man who found the waterfalls, Ricketts Glen is a bucket list item for any nature lover because of the 21 named waterfalls that flow directly after each other. The waterfalls range in size from 11 feet to 94 feet in height. The trail is in the shape of a horseshoe with an additional trail starting at the curve of the horseshoe. There are 3 additional waterfalls along this trail, including my personal favorite, Harrison Wright Falls.

You will have to take a back trail to see the additional falls, but it is well worth the extra hike. The path, in total, is around 7 miles long one way.

The best time to visit any waterfall is after a good rain or melting snow. Visiting the park during Spring Break would allow hikers to experience waterfalls that are fully flowing,rather than those without much water in them. Spring Break is a perfect time to visit because it will be much more captivating due to melting snow, rather than when it is dry outside and barely any water. Those who will be making a trek to Ricketts Glen should prepare in advance by taking these precautions: -Stop in the park office to get a map. Not only will the map aid with directions, but it also lists the names of each waterfall and how tall each one is.

-Let a family member or friend know before beginning to hike. That way, help knows where to look in case of an emergency.

-Be sure to pack water and a snack. Hiking the trail takes longer

than most people think.

-Begin hiking early in the day. Getting caught in the woods in the dark is dangerous, and 7 miles is a decently long hike.

-Wear shoes with good traction that can get muddy. Sandals are prohibited in the park. The trail to all of these waterfalls is uneven, which means cautiously stepping up and down onto large rocks is a must. Although the best time to visit waterfalls is after a good rain, this causes the big rocks along the path to be very slick.

Use extreme caution when walking along this uneven path.

-Use the “buddy system� when going on any hike. An emergency could occur at any time, so it is important to have a friend along.

Ricketts Glen is open year-round and is open from sunrise until sunset. Many activities take place at the park, such as camping, swimming at the public beach, fishing, hunting, and picnicking.

-Taking a camera along to capture the many natural waterfalls that this park has to offer is a must.

-One final piece of advice is to stop and take it all in. Take a minute to stand in awe of the natural beauty of the peaceful waterfalls. Let go of all worries and just enjoy the moment.

If you go: -IMPORTANT - Sometimes the trail is closed during the winter because of ice buildup along the trails. Call before visiting to be sure the park is open.

-The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset -There is no fee to visit the park There are three parking lots: 1. Lake Rose (at the end of the dirt road across from the campground and provides the closest access to Falls Trail) 2. Beach Parking Lot #2 is at the beach nearby. Leave the lot and walk down the Cabin Road (first road just outside of the lot), past a park gate, and onto a section of trail to the first intersection where you will go right 3. Local favorites: Lock Haven’s burger joint and coffee shop Roxanne Aretta

Opinions Editor rab484@lockhaven.edu Since opening in the summer of 2017, Oddfellas has captured the appetite of many Lock Haven locals and college students. With 16 hand-crafted burgers on the menu, the options seem endless to any burger foodie. For the true fanatic, Oddfellas features a burger of the month.

Originally, chef Sean Geraty said he wasn’t sure he liked how owner Josh Grimes wanted the burgers made. The store makes “smashed burgers,” which is a technique that adds more of a crust and makes the patties taste meatier. But Geraty tried it out, and loves the smashed burgers as much as he loves working at Oddfellas.

Geraty said their most popular burger is the “Wild”, which is coated in Cajun seasoning and piled high with grilled onions, bacon barbeque sauce, cheddar cheese, and jalapenos.

March’s burger is the “Herban Legend,” comprised of rosemary and cracked pepper bacon, Swiss cheese, caramelized onions, mushrooms, an aioli, tomatoes and lettuce. “We try to keep it as local as possible,” Geraty said about the ingredients. Even the Appalachian Soda sold at the store is from Lancaster, Pa. The neatest part about Oddfellas isn’t the variety: it’s the actual restaurant itself. The booths along the wall are made from Church pews, and tables from an old bowling alley compose the long dining table situated in the center.

People can order Oddfellas online via ChowNow, which Geraty said makes it easier for people who don’t have the time to wait in store.

Lock Haven’s Avenue 209 opened its doors in 2009, and has been a coffee shop throughout the week and a church on Sundays ever since. Manager Jared Conti said, “The original intent was to bring in college kids, but it’s more of a community place.”

From middle-school students to Lock Haven University professors, locals show up to buy their favorite drinks and sandwiches. Barista Andy Brubaker said middle-schoolers love bubble tea and Hank’s Soda, while high-schoolers mostly choose lattes. And college students often fill up on their daily doses of caffeine. “The cookies are a hit for everyone,” Brubaker said. “It’s because we serve them warm.”

Other menu items include espresso brownies, bagel sandwiches, ice cream, milkshakes, soup, tea, hot chocolate, and of course, coffee. “We roast our own coffee. We like to keep it local,” said Conti.

Conti said bands from across the nation play good, live music on Fridays and Saturdays. It’s closed on Sundays because the owner, Josh Grimes, holds sermons. The shop itself has murals painted on the walls by local students.

Mass shootings are a product of culture Kyle McCarthy

Guest Writer kjm2080@lockhaven.edu In Response To March 1’s Article “Former Stoneman Douglass…” (p. 4).

The cultural and political circumstances and debate of such heinous acts like the Parkland, Fla. shooting are difficult, without question.

We, as Americans, do not enjoy sitting by idly while we see things we deem wrong. This has been both a blessing and a curse in many ways, but this opinion is neither a history lesson nor a guilt trip.

The emotional response has been very deserved. 17 men and women, most only slightly younger than us, are now the decedents of an outrageous incident of murder. I empathize deeply with the pain, frustration and trauma experienced, as an emergency medical technician of four years who has seen the horror of violence and emotional outrage up front and in person on multiple occasions. The question of “Why?” is a fair one to ask.

I disagree, however, that the primary question is “Why was he allowed an AR-15 style rifle?” I am a gun owner. I do not, however, possess an AR-15 or any weapon similar to such a platform. I find there is immense ignorance among the American public to these devices, as well as the process of obtaining them, namely due to the bias and fearmongering mainstream media uses, at least in part, to sell their networks.

One interviewee made the error of stating “ ‘We are not trying to take away your right to bear arms…because that is your right. It is so easy to get yourself a military weapon.’ Actually, for almost 100 years the American citizen has consistently had their right to bear arms stripped from them. Starting with the 1934 NFA, then the GCA of 1968, and the MGB of 1984. These you may freely Google, some parts are good, others not so much. There was also an Assault Weapons ban, bearing exceptional likeness to the ones being re-proposed today, that ran from 1994 to 2004. No change in the number of gun deaths or

mass shootings occurred in the entire span of the ban, for the record, according to the New york Times and FactCheck.org.

“What’s more important: the right to bear arms, or the right to live?”

The right to bear arms is the right to live. The CDC under Obama found that defensively, firearms are used between 500,000 to 3 million times per year, according to the Committee of Law and Justice.

In contrast, the average number of gun homicide deaths on average per year ranges from 8,000 to 12,000 per year at most since 2005, according to The National Center for Health Statistics.

The idea that the two are mutually exclusive is asinine, to say the least. Of all these, AR style weapons accounted for at most 3 percent of all deaths. A responsibly used firearm is the great equalizer for the young, old, people of color, LGBT, and any other demographic to protect from violence in seconds, when the police are always minutes away.

Mass shootings are a product of the last 30 years, though AR style weapons have been readily available for 70 years. What changed? Our culture.

From various CNN reports and their website, many red flags were obvious. Cruz had upwards of 20 police incidences involving vandalism, violence, and terroristic threats. None were investigated as a pattern of consistent public concern. Cruz was regarded as an outlier socially; no attempt was made to reach out to him for clinical or social help. Sources conflict, but many say he had radical political ties. No concerns investigated. During the incident in question, an on-scene sheriff’s department officer purposefully failed to respond entirely. Every facet of government, administration, and the student body failed to even consider the threat at hand. Even now a month later, would be copycats threaten similar incidences. What he did would have made no significant difference done with any other weapon available easily or otherwise. Homicidal persons are may be delayed but can only be stopped by direct intervention.

A simple ban is inadequate, and an eclectic approach is required.

Naturally, I don’t ask that you think like me, but I do ask that you think. Your rights are fundamental to human life, no matter how the media paints it. When one goes, the rest soon erode.

Athletes of the week Alex Klucker

Wrestling Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Alex Klucker of the LHU wrestling team has been named this week’s Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Men’s Athlete of the Week.

Klucker helped pace The Haven to its first Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) championship title since 1997 as he was the individual champion at 157-lbs, which also earned him an automatic qualification to the Division I National Championships.

Klucker had a phenomenal run as he entered the championship as the third seed. He beat John Vaughn from Cleveland State in the first round, in the semifinals he faced former All-American BJ Clagon who pinned Klucker earlier in the year. Klucker came away with the 8-3 decision in this matchup to face Andrew Shomers from Edinboro in the finals.

Klucker then gave the crowd a show as he pinned Shomers in just 52 seconds to claim the individual title and give LHU important bonus points.

Lacrosse Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Hayley Kilian of the LHU lacrosse team has been named this week’s Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Female Athlete of the Week.

Kilian has helped the nationally ranked Bald Eagles start the 2018 campaign 2-0. Last week against Dominican, Kilian made her first start of the season in a 23-5 rout as LHU maintained a 10-plus goal lead the entire second half as the clock did not stop.

She recorded two goals and seven assists as she finished the game with a team-high nine points.

LHU Sharp Shooters hit their mark at Nationals Courtney Quiggle

Managing Editor crq1452@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven Archery club placed second overall in the US Indoor Nationals this weekend at Eastern Mennonite University in Harrisonburg Virginia.

This two-day event is held in 12 different locations around the United States.

The final scores are then combined from all of the events. The archers were scored on their accuracy at hitting a vertical three spot target. Bryce Bason, senior and coach of the team, was a stand out once again as he brought home a first place title for the second time in the last two years., “The team performed great this weekend. All of the practice and hard work has definitely paid off, ”Bason said.

Out of a possible 600 points, Bason

scored 580 points on the first day and 577 points on the second. Ranking him first in the nation for each day of the competition. Also among the top 10 finishers was Brendon Cadwallader, a sophomore, as he took forth place this year scoring 566 on the first day and 574 on the second.

Graduate student Austin Phillips received sixth place with daily scores of 562 and 570, respectively.

Bason organized the LHU Archery club in 2014 and holds practices two or three times a week at Miller’s Gun Shop in Lamar which is owned by Bason’s family.

Bason has access to the indoor shooting range at all times, allowing him to spend endless hours practicing. He learned how to shoot a bow when he was 3 years old and has been perfecting the skill ever since. He has placed in many events over the years and has a strong passion for the sports.

LHU Hosts 39th Annual Collegiate Boxing Invitational Mia Swales

Staff Writer mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Lock Haven hosted the Davis Insurance Lock Haven University 39th Annual Collegiate Boxing Invitational on Saturday. Amongst those in attendance were former and current boxers, sponsors and fans.

Lock Haven inducted three former boxers into the Boxing Hall of Fame: Gary Rizado, Jim McNally, and Dr. Ken Cox. All three have played a positive role promoting this sport at LHU, statewide, and even nationally. These athletes have competed for Olympic berths,

engaged in coaching and reffing, won national titles, and also donated to the university. They have left a strong legacy at LHU and on the sport.

The boxing invitation featured participating teams from Penn State University, U.S NavalAcademy, University of Connecticut, Miami University, Kutztown University, U.S Military Academy, U.S Coast Guard Academy, University of Massachusetts, Shippensburg University, University of Nevada- Reno and Trinity College. Along with LHU, these schools brought 50 athletes together for the competition.

For the evening card, Lock Haven’s Avery Drake in the 132 pound weight class battled until the final bell rang against Naval Acad-

emy’s Ben Nguyen. Nguyen finished with the victory. Lock Haven’s Raul Lopez-Caveda took on U.S Military Academy’s Justin Cooper for the 163 pound weight class. After a intense battle Cooper finished with the win. Lock Haven sealed the night with Anthony Proctor’s win against Kutztown’s Jason Turdo in the 182 pound weight class.

Campus honors life of student athlete Mia Swales

Staff Writer mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Daniel Strawbridge passed away Friday, March 2. He left his mark on the football field and on the heart of the campus community.

Strawbridge was a standout during his entire collegiate football career. During his 2014 sophomore season he had 81 tackles, 60 of which were solo and four interceptions. His 2015 junior season, he had 82 tackles, 61 of them were solo, and 1 interception. He also was named to the First Team for the All Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Eastern Division, along with Lock Haven’s Talon award – Player of the Year.

“He was fearless, he played without a fear of failure,” Coach Dave Taynor said. “I really admiredthe way he played.”

Despite missing the 2016 season due to injury, Strawbridge came back the following season and finished his collegiate career in high numbers: he had 51 tackles, with 31 of them solo and 2 interceptions.

Strawbridge also was awarded Second Team honors for the PSAC Eastern Division in 2017.

Teammate defensive lineman Brandon Clements says Strawbridge was dependable and a driving force on the team. “He was a leader on the field,” Clements said. “He was always a guy we couldcount on to make a play.”

Strawbridge’s legacy is more than football to the Lock Haven community. “Straws had an impactlike no other player on the team – he always brought a smile to a conversation or a room,” Clements said. “He was always happy and uplifting people.”

Number 6, Daniel Strawbridge has left his mark and legacy here with Lock Haven University’s football program, the LHU community, the city of Lock Haven and every life that crossed paths with him.
