NEWS Rodney Hanley, prospective president, holds student open forum Derek Danneker

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu The first of four candidates for the new president at Lock Haven University said at an open forum attended by 20 students, yesterday, that he is “humbled to be considered for the presidency” at an institution where he sees a success story.

Rodney Hanley has a background in biology and taught at University of North Dakota and Winnipeg University before taking administrative roles at Lakehead University and is currently provost and vice president for academic affairs at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee.

He says that there are seven specific areas he’d like to focus on if he were to be offered presidency: Globalization on campus; student transformation; academics; financial sustainability; Community relationships; institutional effectiveness; and diversity and inclusion.

Hanley, drawing from his experience at Lakehead University in Ontario as provost, said,“The goal was to bring Lakehead to the world and the world to Lakehead University.”

“When I arrived there- I didn’t know this going on- but the institution was very much teetering on the edge of a very serious financial crisis, they had declining enrollments to the point where it was a very serious problem for the institution and so we were probably 18 months away or even less from closing academic departments

on campus, which would have been a terrible thing” Hanley’s answer was to develop a new academic plan of recruitment to increase study abroad opportunities and reach out to other campus in other countries. He estimates that when he arrived at Lakehead University, there were only 20 international students, but when he left they made up 20 percent of the student body.

“With that alone we were able to avoid the difficult financial cuts,” he said Hanley believes that it is necessary for a university to develop student’s mind, body and spirit to achieve transformation.

“Athletics play an essential role in a high quality education, it cannot be replaced and will not be replaced… my commitment to athletics is unparalleled, I guarantee it,” he said.

A lot of what people know about institutions comes through athletics, making it’s marketing value unequalled, explained Hanley. This includes offering competitive scholarships so that LHU will be able to bring the best athletes possible.

Hanley praised LHU for being able to maintain academic excellence despite nationwide enrollment decreases. ”I think lock haven is far and away, heads and tails above other universities when it pertains to financial sustainability... it has done an incredible job of maintaining high academic quality at a time of declining enrollment, I think people should be proud of that,” he said Hanley pointed out encouraging statistics, LHU maintains 16.7, 17.5 and 46.2 percent above the national average in graduation rate, earnings after graduation and paying down their federal student

loan, respectively. All this while keeping tuition at nearly exactly the national average.

“Now is there work to be done? Absolutely, and when you think about what is the economic driver for institutions, universities in the united states, there’s been a heavy focus on the 18-24 year old demographic,”he said.

However, Hanley says that he no longer believes that this demographic can be the economic driver for institutions. Instead, Hanley expressed that LHU should reach out to adult learners who occupy the largest age group in the United States of about 60 million.

“That is a ready made market that we can reach out to and drive up those numbers. What that would require is a little bit of institutional shift, a little bit of institutional change, making the environment that we all experience here as conductive as possible to those adult learners,” he said.

It is imperative, then, that LHU avoids “the town and gown divide,” Hanley explained. Too often universities become alienated from the rest of the city and that kind of separation hurts it’s reputation.

LHU needs “active leadership to avoid that kind of stuff,” said Hanley.

But above all, the university needs to maintain constant and agreeable exchanges with students in order to be effective.

Hanley explains that one negative experience that a student has with an office may lead to word being spread around campus and the overall student moral going down. Then it becomes a retention issue and the institution may form a financial problem.

Hanley says that he wants to get all of his employees to focus on the singu-

lar issue, that they need to be student-centered.

Not only does Hanley come from Fisk University, one of the nation’s premier historically Black colleges, but focused, during his time at Lakehead University, on incorporating first nation and aboriginal people into the student body. Increasing the population of aboriginal people attending Lakehead University from 7 percent to 15 percent, the highest in Canada.

Hanley says that he wanted to send a message to the aboriginal people,”if you’re thinking about going to a university, you have a home at our institution,” he said A message sorely needed at LHU, which has faced lawsuits over employee discrimination in 1999, 2003, 2008, 2009, 2014 and 2016.

Today, Hanley wants to return to small town life to raise his two small boys who are adopted from Africa. He says he detests his hour and a half commute to work into Nashville everyday.

“I think what that has reminded me that small town life is something that is very appealing to raise a family in. So the prospect of coming to Lock Haven with my two sons and being the chief executive of a prestigious institution like Lock Haven University, it’s something that’s really attractive,”said Hanley.

“I’m impressed by his speech,”said Chad Miller, a Junior Physics Major.”He seemed to have an example for every conceivable situation.”

Particularly, Miller said,”I like him because he’s a science guy, he spoke about his research and that really made me happy.”

Former Stoneman Douglas High School student speaks out about shooting Mark Matthews

Staff Writer mjm2923@lockhaven.edu Every year on February 14th, we celebrate our love with each other through the holiday, Valentine’s Day. Sadly, in this year’s edition of the celebration, our country was informed with the news of the mass shooting in Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School at Parkland, Florida, which took the innocent lives of 17 people.

Jonathan Buytenhuys, a junior business major at Lock Haven University actually attended this high school his freshman & sophomore year until transferring to a Pennsylvania high school to complete his high school career. Buytenhuys found out about the shooting about two hours after it took place. “It was a shock,” Buytenhuys said, “I was in class when my teacher pulled it up on the screen and was talking about it.”

After being asked if he was emotional about it all, he responded, “It was very emotional, it was my old school. I knew some of the people.” He also mentioned, “What if I was born a few years later?”

There have also been plenty of arguments about whether gun laws should be looked at more carefully. Buytenhuys says, “We are not trying to take away your right to bear arms (referring to the 2nd Amendment), because that is your right. It is so easy to get yourself a military weapon.”

With another solid point, Jonathan points out, “What’s more important, the right to bear arms or the right to live?” Furthermore, Buytenhuys recommends, “If you want a gun, you will need to have a test to see if something’s mentally wrong with you and a background check if you had any criminal history.”

Buytenhuys will be attending the “March for the Lives” event on March 24th in Washington D.C. to promote that our lives matter and safety should be our priority. Buytenhuys said, “I plan on marching from eight a.m. to eight p.m.”

Talent at the Haven Evannah Phan Arts & Entertainment Editor Etp7162@lockhaven.edu I was very fortunate to be able to meet with “Henry’s Law” play director, Rebecca Glincman. Glincman is a current sophomore English major at Lock Haven University who is originally from Randolph, New Jersey. She was gregarious and totally at ease as we started to talk about her long running relationship with theatre and the arts.

Glincman has been involved with theatre since she was a sophomore in high school and was introduced to it on a whim one day.

She saw her high school’s play tech director looking very defeated in a pile of tulle and decided to intervene. She tried to be helpful and asked if she could lend a hand. The tech director gleefully accepted her help which started Glincman’s journey through the Theatre production world. Glincman became very active in the Theatre community and truly immersed herself in all of the behindthe-scenes aspects of producing a play. She

became extremely well-versed with the ins and outs of Theatre production which helped her direct “Henry’s Law”. She notes that most of the skills that she has learned about theatre production was self-taught and done through first-hand experience. Throughout her high school years, she kept learning new

skills for each play and became acclimated with all of the aspects. She truly believes in the art of theatre production and her passion clearly shows.

There are so many things that have to get done before the curtains fall. The tasks are so vast and are all pertinent in presenting an amazing production, including: set designing; actors; stage crew members; light design; light board operator; sound technician, etc.

It is so important to tip a hat to all of the people that helped produce the show. Almost the whole play was student-run and student-produced with the excellent help of their advisor, Ramona Broomer.

As an Editor for The Crucible and the Vice President of the University Players, Glincman has built quite an astounding repertoire. Rebecca has been very active in theatre work at Lock Haven University and will be directing her second play this week.

Check it out at the Sloan Fine Arts Center room 321. The show runs from February 28 through March 3 at 7:30 pm and at 2 pm on March 4.

University Players Present “Henry’s Law” Samantha Wilson Staff Writer Slw2547@lockhaven.edu A play addressing cyber bullying and teen suicide opens tonight on the Lock Haven University campus. Lock Haven’s theater club, University Players, are set to perform six showings of Henry’s Law starting tonight and running until Sunday afternoon.

All performances will be held on campus in the Sloan Fine Arts Center room 321. The cast includes four members with all the roles being “pretty equal,” says the show’s director, Rebecca Glincman.

Although the play was initially intended for teens, Christian Girton, Lock Haven University freshman starring as Max, says he still thinks it is “just as effective,” for college students to see, because suicide is still a relevant topic of discussion.

There are 39 seats available during each of the six shows. Although tickets are free, the club asks if students are planning to attend, please reserve the tickets prior to the show at the box office

on the first floor of Sloan. (The average run time for the performance is about 50 minutes.) The play runs nightly at 7:30 pm with matinee performances Saturday and Sunday at 2 pm.

Drake—the Degrassi star, Canadian rapper and hip-hop artist—has taken music to unique artistic levels with his many hits. Now, he’s got everyone’s attention with a soulful message about giving back in his music video for “God’s Plan.”

Some of Drake’s top hits include Hotline Bling, Energy, Legend, Shot for me, Take Care, Controlla, Best I Ever Had, and many more. His latest, “God’s Plan,” has been a hit on Billboard charts for the last three weeks, and here again, he is breaking new ground.

Drake shot his music video for the song in Miami. The beginning explains that the budget was $996,631.90 and he states, “We gave it all away.”

Instead of taking the money budgeted for the video to pay himself and his crew, he went to a university and other public places to share the wealth, bringing fun and joy to others and spreading love and happiness.

Those are some of the BIG moments in life that count. No matter if you like the song or not, I can guarantee you’ll like the video. There’s just something about it that says hope and happiness. There’s art and a story to tell in the music video, and the extra layer of generosity gives it more life. I believe that Drake is sending an important message to viewers. And I think this is just the beginning for this artist and his intention to do good in the world through his music. Stay tuned for his next release.

As “God’s Plan” illustrates, there are good, humble people in this world and they deserve to be celebrated.

Movie Review

Kiara Carson Staff Writer Knc9459@lockhaven.edu Netflix released a comedic racially versed movie in January called “Step Sisters” and it is phenomenal! This film is about a black college senior, Jamilah Bishop, that seems to have everything she needs to move on with her life after graduating, but it all turns upside down when she has to help a white sorority, Sigma Beta Beta, keep their charter from being shut down.

The way she helps the sorority is what brings up most of the racial controversy throughout this whole movie. Bishop has to teach them how to step. Stepping is a form of dance that involves making many different, creative beats using your

hands and feet and is derived from Africa and its people.

Stepping is used as an object of something a race thinks it owns based on culture and history. In the movie, a stepping competition is the only thing that can save SBB and Bishop is the only person that can properly teach them.

It’s also the thing that’ll bring up problems between Bishop, her parents (mostly her mother), boyfriend, and sisters from her sorority, Theta Chi Phi. They all view stepping as a form of property for the black community and with the SBB’s training to learn the craft, everyone is shocked and views this act as “cultural theft.”

Bishop is the only one that wants to change how everyone sees the situation and works with the SBB’s despite her loved ones’ opinions. She eventually openly

expressed that stepping shouldn’t be based on race, but on unity between every culture and in this time, things have changed between cultures enough to keep the peace in this world.

If everyone in the movie were to keep thinking so negatively about the white sorority girls stepping, then it would most likely set society back to the old days of separation and fighting. Luckily, the plot makes a positive spin on the story.

In the end, all is well, and everyone learns a great lesson about how the world needs to be more accepting and not regress while having a few laughs along the way.

Step Sisters is a fun, loving, and great film fit for the whole family, but more targeted towards college students.

Pittsburgh’s annual steel city step show

Kiara Tinnin Lifestyles Editor Kct4127@lockhaven.edu In a captivating display of step, dance and Greek culture, the 21st annual Steel City Step Show thrilled a large audience in Pittsburgh last Saturday. The sororities and fraternities of the University of Pittsburgh gathered together to showcase their style, new moves and unity for all to see.

LHU’s Black Student Union hosted a trip to the city for students to see the Divine Nine fight for the title of 2018 Step Champion. During the trip students were allowed to go shopping and get a bite to eat before the show began. The performance started promptly at 5:30 in the evening as the crews began to set up, and students, families and alumni found their seats for the show.

At the start, the audience was wowed with entertaining performances from fraternities Alpha Phi Alpha, Omega Psi Phi and the sororities Delta Sigma Theta and Zeta Beta Tau.

Family fun was included when children in the audience were invited on stage to participate in a dance-off. The cuteness factor was in full effect, with the crowd chanting for the young ones as they showed their dance moves.

Near the end of the show other sororities and fraternities gathered on stage for a unity step. That particular move is a gesture toward the inclusion of everyone and a nod to the heritage of the many who have stepped before, who have continued channeling their time, dedication, and passion for step.

LHU coach Scott Moore attended the trip with the students. He’s been making the journey for the past three years and was pleased with the enthusiasm he saw. “I enjoyed it very much,” Coach Moore said. “There were minority students as well as Caucasian students represented at the show. That made everyone feel like this was their event.”

The winners of the step show were the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity and Delta Sigma Theta sorority. Both teams were awarded a scholarship check of $1,000.

Editors Spring break

LHU Eagle Eye Staff lockhaveneagleeye@gmail.com We all know how it is. The first week of the semester comes, but it’s chillibus week. Who does work then? Next comes week two, and you’re still not feeling it. But hey, third week is the charm but that passes faster than the first two. Fourth, Fifth, Sixth, all pass the same, but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Spring break.

It’s still more than a week away, but here at the Eagle Eye we are already looking forward to, and planning for, spring break. This week, we’re listing our favorite ways we’d like to spend spring break: 1. Reading If you love books as much as I do, they pile up. I mean big piles. If they fall, I may not make it out alive. They need dispensed with immediately, and the best time to do it is during spring break. I like to post up on my porch with a glass of lemonade, listen to the wind rustle the trees and lose myself in a book.

-Derek Danneker, Editor-in-Chief 2. Tropical travels If I had the money, I’d be spending my spring break with a group of my girlfriends at a tropical beach. I’d spend my days with my toes in the sand and a fancy drink in my hand. I wouldn’t worry at all about school work or my job, I’d just be taking in the sunshine. Since the money is not present for me to live out these dreams, I will be catching up on my rest and spending quality time with my family.

Hanging with friends I will take the two hour trip back east to the edge of the Coal Region, where my high school friends and I would be performing the same antics we have been for years. OPINION 13 Professor’s page: Words from Lock Haven’s finest

Why write?

Assistant Professor dwashing@lockhaven.edu “I never said that!” “I did, too, say that!” “I wish I’d said…I should have said…” If you’ve ever found any of these words coming out of your mouth or screaming in your unspoken thoughts, you know some good, practical reasons to put words in writing. When you write, you can take the time to think of every last point you want to make, create proof of what you did or did not say, and never suffer the regrets of what might have been.

A long time ago in Utah, I heard a professor of German use the brevity of life as a reason to study another language. With life so short, he said, we need to communicate in as many ways with as many others as possible and perhaps extend our brief opportunity to improve life for everyone. His poetic talk so moved me that I carried his idea, along with the practical reasons, into my writing classrooms, and then took them further.

It’s said that we are born alone and we die alone. Between those times, the best of life occurs when we communicate. We have speech; we have sign language; we have body language and facial expression.

With selected others, touch provides another mode; but these choices are few—and they’re ephemeral. Words exit our mouths as puffs of air and disappear into the air. The subtle expressions and movements that divulge emotions we might wish to keep secret blur by, emphasizing or contradicting the words that overwhelm their importance.

Signed conversations flash by us just as quickly and are replaced by more signs; and eventually, these too, become memory or are forgotten. A touch may last a second or an hour—but when it’s done, it’s gone. These modes of communication are evanescent; once they’ve ended, we’re

alone again. If you’ve ever saved a letter or card so you could look back at it later, you’ve understood that written connections are lasting.

You may be thinking that a picture is worth a thousand words and that moving pictures accompanied by spoken words can be played back again and again—but recordings are as transitory as lived experience, and less flexible in their fixed order of viewing and in the time required to view than written words.

Writing, whether it’s a text or a tome, handwritten or printed or composed of pixels on an electronic screen, sits still and waits for each of us to take it in at our own speed, in our own time, in any order, and in as many repetitions as we want or need. The communication is silent and often experienced in solitude but feels personal. Every time written words are read, one individual is communicating with one individual, even if millions are simultaneously reading the same words.

Whether the writer produced those words easily or struggled with each one, wrestling with precise meanings and the mood s/he wished to create, there is no denying what was said or not said, even if there is disagreement about what the intended meaning may be. (There’s the fun of reading literature, but that’s a different story.)

Writing can free us from the isolation of our own skulls. Writing allows us to touch others thoughtfully from a distance in space and time, and, if done well, more intimately than other modes. Writing is communication with people we care about, readers we may never know, and sometimes, our future selves. Our writing, if it means enough, can connect us to other minds and outlast our brief lives.

Athletes of the week Ra’eese Hunt

Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Ra’eese Hunt of the LHU men’s basketball team has been named this week’s Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Men’s Athlete of the Week.

Hunt capped his senior season this past week as earlier in the season he became the 19th Bald Eagle to eclipse the 1,000 point mark in a career. He finished his LHU career with 1,096 points which ranks him 17th all-time in scoring.

Last week, Hunt averaged a double-double as he averaged 18 points and pulled down 10.5 rebounds per game. In the overtime contest at Cheyney, Hunt netted 16 points and brought down 10 rebounds while on senior day, he scored 20 points and had 11 rebounds.

Moyer competed at the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) indoor track and field championships this past weekend hosted by Edinboro University.

Moyer, a freshman, proved to the PSAC why she held the number one seed in the 5,000-meter race going into the championship meet as she won the event by five seconds. She crossed the line in 17:36.09 which was nearly 10 seconds faster than her season best time and ranks number two all-time in LHU history.

She also competed in the 3,000-meter race where she finished in eighth place with a time of 10:17.85.

15 SPORTS Tompkins improves school record to cap off PSAC Indoor Track & Field Championships Matt Guiod Graduate Assistant mag3656@lockhaven.edu EDINBORO, Pa. – Rashana Tompkins (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) and the Lock Haven University women’s indoor track & field team capped off a sensational season on day two of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championships hosted by Edinboro University as Tompkins once again broke the LHU 60-meter hurdle record. Yesterday she became the first LHU women’s student-athlete to break the nine second barrier in the event.

Tompkins qualified for the finals yesterday when she broke her own school record with a time of 8.94. Today in the finals marked the fourth time this year that she has shattered the school record, as she once again broke the nine second wall with a blazing time of 8.87 for sixth place. She was only .04 seconds from third place and .06 seconds from an NCAA Division II National Championship qualifying standard.

To compliment Moyer’s victory in the 5,000-meters, fellow freshman Cadie Kiser (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) ran to a 13th place finish as she clocked a time of 18:34.10.

The 4x800-meter relay consisting of Elizabeth Duguid (West Chester, Pa./ West Chester East), Morgan Sutton (Stevensville, Pa./Wyalusing Valley), Rachel Grow (Turbotville, Pa./Warrior Run) and Tia Judy (East Prospect, Pa./ Homeschool) combined to run a time of 10:28.30 to place eighth overall.

In the 400-meter dash Kayla Brathwaite (Arouca, Trinidad & Tobago/Bishop Anstey East) went into the race ranked 23rd however crossed the line in 17th place with a time of 1:01.37.

Breanna Joseph (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg) and Brook Rozenberg (Jersey Shore, Pa./Jersey Shore) both competed in the pentathlon which consists of the 60-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put, long jump and caps off with the 800-meter run. Joseph finished 11th overall while Rozenberg placed 13th.

Stephanie Williams (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg) and Kelsey Koontz (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) both placed top-20 in the weight throw as Williams finished 18th with a throw of 46’ 5.5” while Koontz had a season best throw of 43’ 11.75” to place 20th.

The Bald Eagles will now shift their focus to the outdoor track and field schedule as they will kick off the season on March 24, at the Juniata Invite hosted by Juniata University. A full recap of the indoor season will be available later this week on golhu.com.

Women’s and Men’s Basketball close out seasons Jayson Moyer

Managing Editor jpm362@lockhaven.edu The Lock Haven University Men’s and Women’s basketball teams each closed out their respective 2017-18 campaigns on Saturday at home against Kutztown.

The women’s team (5-21, 4-18 PSAC) was led this season by sophomore Rileigh Devine, who averaged 10.9 points per-game, while shooting 33 percent from the three point line, and 85 percent from the free throw line.

Devine also averaged 2.3 rebounds per-game and was second on the team in assists.

Senior Kayla Henderson finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 10.2 points per-game on 45 percent shooting from the floor. She also averaged 3.8 rebounds.

Freshman Bink Redman led the team in both rebounding and assists, averaging 5.4 and 2.3, respectively. She also led the team in steals with 30.

A rather young team, the Lock Haven women’s basketball team will only lose grad-student Mackenzie Livingston and Henderson, and will return much of their production next season.

The men’s basketball team finished the season at 8-18, and 6-16 in conferenceplay.

Redshirt-sophomore Amir Hinton, arguably the best player in the conference, led the Bald Eagles, averaging 23.4 points per-game. His 23.4 points per-game ended up leading the PSAC conference through regular season play.

Hinton also led the team in rebounding with 6.7 rebounds per-game, while averaging 2.8 assists, which also led the team.

Senior Ra’eese Hunt closed out his stellar Lock Haven career with a 13.8 points per-game average, while pulling down 5.5 rebounds per-game.

Sophomore Tarojae Blake finished third in scoring with 12.8, while freshman Matt Cerruti averaged 10.9. Cerruti led the team in three point field goal percentage for players with a minimum of 40 attempts, averaging 40 percent from beyond the arch.

The Bald Eagles averaged 77.5 points per-game on the season, while shooting 44 percent as team from the field.

On average, they assisted on 11 of their 27 made field goals per-game.
