Reflecting and planning for the future Cassandra Keller

News Editor cmk2356@lockhaven.edu President Pignatello and his staff reported on Title IX and several other events and initiatives at the town hall meeting on Nov, 20.

The meeting largely addressed Title IX initiatives and potential changes posed by the government.

The public — students included— are invited to view these changes at www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/ocr/ docs/title-ix-nprm.pdf and to give feedback until Jan. 8, 2019. “We’re going to make the decision collectively what is best for our students.” Pignatello said.

LHU’s upcoming Middle States evaluation requirements and timeline was presented at the meeting as well. A rough timeline is now online at www.lockhaven.edu/about/accreditation/msche/ . A more concrete timeline will be made available early next semester.

Looking into the future, several marketing plans such as bus transit ads and redesigned brochures were presented as solutions for the steadily dropping enrollment rates. Other presented ideas included specialized open houses geared towards high school juniors and a joint homecoming celebration with the district. Students are encouraged to share feedback and other ideas they may have. “We are listening and we will continue to.” Pignatello said.

NEWS LHU students find time to give for the holidays Derek Danneker

Editor-in-chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Students, faculty and community members came to the Student Rec Center to give blood, Wednesday. Givers said attendance was higher than usual.

The blood drive, run by American Red Cross, will continue Thursday, 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.

“So far, compared to other blood drives I’ve been to, there’s a lot of people. I actually had to wait to give blood, so that’s a good thing,”said Sydney Glossner, a freshman psychology major.

Glossner said she gives blood because she has a rare blood type and, “I’m helping a lot of people by doing something so easy, so why not?”

Agnes Coder, a graduate from Lock Haven University, now living

in Mill Hall, said she thinks it’s great the Red Cross comes to LHU. “I’ve been giving it since my sister had cancer. She needed several donations so I’m just kinda giving back,” she said.

Several faculty also gave blood, including Lucus Fanning, assistant director of human resources.

“I volunteered a couple times, years ago, and ever since then I’ve been a regular blood donor.” He said. “Everytime they’re on campus I come to give blood.”

Fanning said he particularly liked how the Red Cross tells people where the blood goes and when it is used.

“With recent disasters and stuff, there’s always going to be a shortage of blood near disaster times,”said Jessica Haines, a senior social work major.

“It doesn’t matter what your blood type is either, if it’s rare or common, you should still give blood because if something can happen in your area.”

Politicization of anti-semitism Ben Ronemus

Staff Writer bjr1324@lockhaven.edu Rabbi Yaakov Menken talked to the LHU community about the politicization of anti-semitism earlier this week. Menken said “Nine percent of Americans are tainted with anti-semitism,” which is low compared to the rest of the world. “Jewish person three times more likely to be the victim of a hate crime in America right now than a black person,” said Menken.

Menken spoke on a variety of topics, mostly relating to the markers of an anti-semite and antisemitism throughout history.

Menken said that there were two main markers of anti-semitism: “Number one that all Jewish property is stolen somehow” and “number two is that the Jews are a bunch of supremacists who only care about their own and would like to get rid of everybody else.”

Menken related the two markers to the 11 stereotypes of anti-semitism created by the Anti-Defamation League. Menken said some were, “Jews have too much power in international financial markets,” and “Jews are more loyal to Israel than to this country.Jews don’t care about anyone but their own kind.”

Additonal stereotypes include the belief that “Jews think they are better than other people” and “Jews have too much control over the global media.”

Menken related each of the stereotypes back to the two markers of anti-semitism.

Menken also gave a brief survey of anti-semitism throughout history. He talked about everything from Biblical times to the Nazis in Germany to the present day.

When describing anti-semitism Menken said, “It is always genocidal

at the end of the day.” He also said “Hitler was not the first one to say he wants to kill all the Jews.” Menken’s words harked back to an earlier part of his talk when he said, “In every generation there is someone who wants to kill all the Jews.”

Menken said that the Jewish values are often hated by anti-semites.

Hitler was “against having those values” that the Jews had ,according to Menken. He said that many values of American society are shared with Jews and “come out of the Bible.” These values are what the anti-semites hate according to Menken.

During his talk, Menken also interjected some of the reasons that people hate the Jews. He said that anti-semites believe that the Jews are “working very industriously to destroy our society.” According to Menken, anti-semites also use projection, “I’m going to project my own defect onto you.” Many people also hate the “the chosen people thing” said Menken.

Menken also talked on the link between antisemitism and the anti-Israel movement. “I am not a zionist” said Menken, “Zionism is a political ideology.”

Menken said that being anti-Israel is “new façade” of anti-semitism. According to Menken, anti-semites say “we don’t hate Jews, we are antiIsrael.”

Menken said that “reality is very unfriendly to the Palestinian cause” and also that “being in someone else’s land for a long time does not make you native, it makes you a long term occupier.”

When speaking on criticisms of Israel, Menken said that Israel has both Jewish and Arab representation in the government, “and that’s the one we are being told is an apartheid state.”

Menken asked if several incidents, such as the Pittsburgh shooting, the removal of Jewish properties in the West Bank from Airbnb, and another not well known recent attack on Jews in Los Angeles were political or anti-semitic. At the end of the speech Menken said that they were all indeed anti-semitic.

LHU choir plans winter concert Staff Reports The Lock Haven University choir winter concert will be held at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, De. 4 at Station Gallery, 2 E. Bald Eagle St., Lock Haven.

Under the direction of Julie Junghwa Park, the concert program will feature a wide spectrum of genres from classical and jazz to traditional folk tunes, and many favorite holiday standards such as “White Christmas” and “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.”

Young Americans for Liberty hosts speaker Staff Reports Lock Haven University and the LHU Young Americans for Liberty will host a lecture by Dr. Christina Hoff Sommers at 7 p.m. Monday, December 3 in Ulmer 211 on the campus of Lock Haven University. Hoff is a nationally known American Enterprise Institute Scholar, contemporary feminism critic, philosopher, professor and author of, “The War Against Boys.”

Along with her publications, Dr. Sommers creates video blogs on Youtube called the Factual Feminist. In her blogs, she comments on feminist issues and misconceptions along with provinging facts and data that partain to the issues.

“The Meg” takes a bite out of theaters everywhere!

Staff Writer kat5346@lockhaven.edu The movie “The Meg” is about an oceanographer that recruits an expert rescue diver to help him and his team save their friends that are trapped at the bottom of the Pacific Ocean’s deepest trench. They were being attacked by a prehistoric 75-foot shark called the Megalodon while they were on a quest to explore the deepest trench in the Pacific Ocean.

The rescue diver must face the Megalodon once again after he escaped the first

time from rescuing some men from the same depth. At first the team wants to capture the shark to do research on it, but they find that it’s impossible because of how aggressive the shark is. The Megaladon ends up killing some of their friends, and in turn they try to kill the shark before it gets the chance to kill anyone else.

This movie is very action-packed with some comedy and romance in it as well.

It stars Jason Statham as Jonas Taylor, Rainn Wilson as Morris, and Ruby Rose as Jaxx as part of the cast and it is directed

by Jon Turteltaub. It came out in theaters on August 10, 2018. I thought that this movie was a cross between Jaws and Jurassic Park. There is a twist in the movie, but

you’d have to watch the movie to find out what the twist is.

I think Jason Statham did a beautiful job playing Jonas Taylor because he got into character, and he brought some comedy into the movie with his lines. He also shows a soft spot for children in the movie as well with the oceanographer’s granddaughter.

We also see that as he gets to know the oceanographer’s daughter, he develops feelings for her.

The music in the movie really went along with the movie because, just like in the movie Jaws, it was very suspenseful and made you feel like you knew what was going to happen next.

“Ralph Breaks the Internet” movie review Kiara Carson

Arts & Entertainment Editor knc9459@lockhaven.edu Wreck-it Ralph is back on the silver screen and ready to kick butt for the second time in order to help the people he loves. It’s been six years since he went from the horrible villain in his video game to the amazing hero who saves the popular “Sugar Rush” arcade game and his own from a hideous, powerhungry virus. Now he’s back to save it again with the help of his new best friend Vanellope von Schweets, the new princess of the “Sugar Rush” kingdom.

In the second installment of this creative, actionpacked series, “Sugar Rush” becomes broken in the arcade and is being shut down because the game has become so old. There isn’t a company that has any new parts to repair the game except for the esteemed website of eBay, which is too expensive for the owner of the arcade to afford, so Ralph and Vanellope decide to take matters into their own hands.

They go into the world of the internet through the Wi-Fi network that was recently installed in the arcade and try to find ways to buy the part from eBay. As they are only fictional characters and don’t have real money to acquire the piece, they need to fix the game.

It becomes a stickier situation when Vanellope decides she wants to try new things in the internet world and gets off topic from trying to save her own game putting Ralph in a weird position, who soon

becomes insecure about his friendship with her.

He thought they’d always be together forever as best friends, but soon realizes that it’s not really true. Amazingly after all the mess these two go through, they manage to accomplish their goal and stay best friends.

This movie is not only a great animation to entertain children, but it also manages to teach them a few life lessons along the way. It teaches them some of the values and sacrifices of friendships that might be necessary to make in order to establish a longlasting friendship.

This includes having conversations, listening to each other, creating boundaries and accept one another for who they are. It also teaches them the value of money and shows the real way the internet works involving online shopping, viruses/bugs, knowing where to look for certain things and to not believe in the multiple online scams you see on a daily basis.

It’s important that kids know these things because the more generations that come into the world, the more kids will grow up on technology like it is today. If they’re going to be on the internet or playing on video game consoles, then they should be well educated and safe while doing so.

Any movie that can put that kind of message out for children to understand and appreciate should expect most parents and adults to be in their corner for a fanbase. It’s a comedic, fun-filled, lovable, even tear-jerking experience that’s perfect for the whole family.

Crunch time Mia Swales Sports Editor Mxs3279@lockhaven.edu Here we are here in college trying to become better and grow. As college students we consistently battle to try and etch out our future. As college students we also have the pleasure of seeing if we really truly like what we are here for. In the process of grasping and trying to master our craft we have the opportunity to get our money’s worth and truly explore our options to find our true passion and purpose through our majors.

Our majors and even our major check sheets that require a bunch of extra classes give us the opportunity to even explore classes that may interest us although it may not be exactly what we want to do this gives us background knowledge on other topics and even topics that may strengthen our knowledge of one’s major. This is a cool experience while in school to learn and explore the inside depths of ones chosen topic and area of expertise but, then when it’s time to graduate reality eventually hits and all of one’s hard work in the books has to be then put to a different level of work to find and get that dream job that one has worked hard at to become qualified for.

According to CNBC, 70 percent of college students graduate with a substantial amount of student loans. As times have changed a college education is a necessity to be successful

whereas to it used to be you didn’t really need one. A problem comes into play when even after you graduate and have the qualifications to get a job – your dream job because of your degree your then not able to find one. That’s a part of a college students biggest fear not having a job when finished with college and not being able to pay off their debt and being trapped.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that 2.1 percent of college graduates are unemployed so the statistics aren’t as bad as they are perceived to be.

According to WayUp, you should apply to jobs regardless of what you think about a job because you may get an opportunity of a lifetime by just trying.

They also suggest that you should know yourself, be confident and humble as well as emphasize your motivation and desires. Have some sort of experience and spend time networking whether that be in college and or after college during job searching.

One never knows who they may run into and the opportunity that may present itself. There is a saying that states never put your eggs in one basket. Something may not be what you want to do initially but that one thing may guide you to greater opportunities that may lead you to your destiny and paths that you have never thought about crossing.

One of my greatest fears is being in debt for the rest of my life and not being able to find a job so it is my hope that I to take this advice and not dump all my eggs in one basket and just focus on only what I truly want to do but broaden my horizons and explore the things that I learned in the classes outside of my major but that have the ability to tie into my major.

How do you learn?

Cassie Gallagher News Editor Cmk2356@lockhaven.edu Christmas bells are ringing and students will be cheering when finals week is over. Sadly before that cheering can happen, you have to study for those nasty finals. It goes without say that everyone learns and studies differently. The cool thing is, however, that most learners can be classified into three main groups: auditory learners, visual learners, and kinesthetic learners.

Knowing your learning type is important because each group learns better and retains knowledge better using different methods. For example, a kinesthetic learner won’t retain knowledge as easily from a friend’s explanation than an auditory learner would.

Just like it sounds, auditory learners retain knowledge best by listening to an explanation and other sound-related studying methods. The best way for an auditory learn to study is through speaking the material out loud or telling a friend about the material.

The visual learner is the next type of learner. Visual learners retain knowledge best by images and diagrams. The best way for a visual learner to study is to draw out pictures and diagrams connecting concepts.

The kinesthetic learner is the last type of learner. Kinesthetic learners retain knowledge best by working concepts and ideas physically. So the best way for kinesthetic learners to study is to create something based on a concept.

These study methods might not get you that A alone, but they will help you to better understand an idea or concept. Everyone is different, you just have to figure out what works best for you.

Pedal Power on the Pine Creek Trail Staff Reports

Lock Haven University President Robert Pignatello was joined by more than a dozen alumni, university employees, and members of the Lock Haven community for a bike ride along the area’s renowned Pine Creek Rail Trail on Saturday.

The event, dubbed Pedal Power with President Pignatello, is part of Pignatello’s concerted effort to engage the community and immerse himself in the beauty and nature of the region. Pedal Power is the president’s newest community engagement event. Since beginning his tenure as LHU’s president on July 1 he has also hosted an on-campus town hall, welcomed community pets on campus for ‘Yappy Hour,’

hosted an on-campus community picnic, and opened up the university’s Price Performance Center for the city of Lock Haven’s Summer Concert Series when rain threatened to wash out the event.

Pedal Power was organized by Lock Haven University Director of Alumni Relations, Ashley Koser. The two-hour, 10-mile trek was capped off with lunch at the Venture Inn. “Events like Pedal Power are a great way for us to engage with alumni, LHU faculty, staff and our community,” Koser said. “It was a beautiful fall day in the Pine Creek Valley to get outdoors and enjoy the rail trail. I’d also like to send a special thanks to the Venture Inn for welcoming our group.”

“It really is a beautiful trail,” Pignatello. “I’m looking forward to riding it again.”

Future “Pedal Power” events are expected, with the next bike ride tentatively scheduled for spring 2019. All are welcomed to attend.

Why you should not donate to the Salvation Army Alexis Gallagher

Opinons Editor aag9585@lockhaven.edu The holiday season is upon us, bringing mall Santas, twinkling lights, and the well-known bell ringers with their red buckets stationed outside busy department stores. The Salvation Army is a mainstay in the memories of our childhood holidays. I remember a number of years where my parents would give me a handful of change to put in the shiny red bucket as we walked into Wal-Mart to shop for our family’s Christmas dinner.

On the surface, the Salvation Army is an organization with good intentions of helping the less fortunate, especially during the holiday season.

However, they are not what they seem on the outside. I don’t care if you’ve never donated to them, or if you have, but I’m here to spread the truth.

Little do some people know, this foundation has a lot of controversy surrounding it, having to do with hate and discrimination. So here’s why you should definitely not donate to the Salvation Army this Christmas season.

Since the 80’s the Salvation Army is known for being extremely homophobic. While such statements were recently removed from the Salvation Army’s website, the church has yet to apologize for any of its previous explicitly anti-gay beliefs. Although these positions may seem to be limited to the group’s internal doctrines, they’ve become a persistent element of the church’s overtly political activities, which have negatively impacted the Salvation Army’s ability to provide charitable services, and have aimed to limit the rights and benefits.

In July 2017, a Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center in Brooklyn, New York, was found by the New York City Commission on Human Rights (NYCCHR) to be discriminating. Three other centers in New York City were also cited as being discriminatory. Violations within the four centers included refusing to accept transgender people as patients or tenants, assigning trans people rooms based on their sex assigned at birth instead of their lived gender identity, unwarranted physical examinations to determine if trans people are on hormone therapy or have had surgery, and segregating transgender patients into separate rooms. The NYCCHR had been tipped off about the mistreatment, and testers from the commission went to the cited centers and found clear evidence of the mistreatment. One of the clinics told the testers outright, “No, we don’t [accept transgender patients].” Another clinic’s representative said, “People with moving male parts would be housed with men.”

In 2014, a transgender woman from Paris, Texas fled her home due to death threats she received related to her gender identity. The police told her, “Being the way you are, you should expect that.” When the woman interviewed for the two-year housing program also run by the Salvation Army, she was told she was disqualified because she had not had gender reassignment surgery. The counselor for the program later claimed there was a waiting list, but it came out that two women who arrived at the emergency shelter after the transgender woman had already entered the program.

There have been several accounts reporting the Salvation Army’s refusal of service to LGBT+ people unless they renounce their sexuality, end same-sex relationships, or, in some cases, attend services “open to all who confess Christ as Savior and who accept and abide by The Salvation Army’s doctrine and discipline.” This belief extends to their staff, asking LGBT+ employees to renounce their beliefs and essentially their identity in order to align with the organization. This is unfair to ask of any employee, especially considering that one’s relationship status does not interfere with how well anyone can do their job.

I explained how the group rejects support that doesn’t fit in with their religious beliefs, so there have been times when they rejected donations.

Twilight and Harry Potter merchandise were thrown away after being donated, but employees claim that violent things, like toy guns, are acceptable. They tend to not like donations from movies or books that involve supernatural beings, because it is deemed as disrespectful to the religion.

Many ex-employees have also come forward saying they were refused pay, discriminated against, disrespected, and fired for multiple reasons. Couples that live together before marriage, same-sex couples, single parents, and people in normal situations are discriminated against because their lives supposedly go against the church.

Many people consider the Salvation Army a cult. Given the uniforms, extreme Puritan ideas, dictatorship, and worship of a single ‘glorious leader’, the Salvation Army are very similar to groups like the Hare Krishnas or the Scientologists. On joining the Salvation Army, members pledge “unquestioning obedience and sacrifice” to their church. Internal dissension is tightly controlled. William Booth, original founder of the Salvation Army, described this as “God’s own system.” Members have to get Army permission to go on dates, and young people are expected to marry only within the Army. Officers are only allowed to marry other officers – they have to leave if they marry “civilians” (people outside the church).

A thread on Twitter recently went viral after a previously homeless woman spoke about the horrid conditions of the shelter she was staying at. She stated not to donate your money, time and items. “Do not support this organization. The shelter I was at is one specifically meant for housing vulnerable women. The RAs were cruel and treated us like we are less than human. When one of us attempted to stand up for our dignity we’re thrown out onto the street with a smile.”

She went on to say they had signs up that threaten woman with prosecution if they took too much toilet paper, and threw women out that showed symptoms of mental illnesses. After they throw the women out, if they don’t pick up their items within seven days, it’s confiscated. Then they sell the items alongside all the donations at the thrift stores. And the women in the shelter? They don’t receive any items. “This place exists for one reason, and that one reason is to farm revenue from these women. Revenue through government funding, cash donations, and the sale of stolen goods.”

There is nothing wrong with helping people in need. If you want to feed hungry people give to a food kitchen for the hungry. Supporting the Salvation Army this season, whether by tossing your change in their red kettles or donating your used goods to their resale shops, means assisting an aggressively anti-gay church in furthering its goals of discrimination.

Would-be donors should consider whether “doing the most good” might mean supporting one of the many other effective and reputable charities that provide for the needy without engaging in anti-gay beliefs, policies, or political activities.

It’s time for us to stop the support.

Boycott them for the wrong that they have done.

The Trevor Project: a leading national organization providing crisis intervention and suicide prevention services to LGBT+ young people ages 13-24.

Editor-in-Chief ddd4907@lockhaven.edu Something I’ve never heard someone say, but now feel: Graduating college feels a bit like dying.

Everything seems to be seen through a retrospective lens, one which looks back on good times, but also casts a shadow on the present.

I’m not sad about leaving, or bitter about my time at LHU. Generally, things are going quite well and I’ll be glad to be off campus.

But, there’s a growing tinge on the periphery; I’ve seen the sights, I’ve done nearly all the work, I’ve set my goals for the future. I’m done here.

I didn’t chose LHU, I went because it was close, but I’m not sure it would have mattered if I did chose it.

University is largely what you make of it. It’s up to you to determine how you’d like to spend the next four years. The investment of time spent into any club or friend group will determine how much meaning you get out of it. This is obvious, but worth saying.

As my time here comes to a close - no, I wasn’t joking about the death allusions- I remember other people who have graduated, their lives on the way, working towards new goals, or failing miserably (You didn’t think it ends well for everyone, did you?).

Looking through old Eagle Eye papers, there’s a lot of names. No one remembers them, they’re lost to the yellowing history. I’ll be there soon, and that’s okay.

In my time with the Eagle Eye, I’ve made many friends, some enemies and about a thousand typos. An important element of graduating college is noticing mistakes, working

to correct them but, on the whole, living with it.

Living with mistakes makes people who they are. Someone who has never made a mistake doesn’t know who they are. So, in a sense, graduates are dying, or at least a piece of them should die. The wide-eyed freshmen they were, full of potential but lacking direction, needs to be buried.

In the ashes, graduates must find themselves. The new self that emerges is much less who they could be, but rather, who they are. This is where university should have prepared you.

The real world is full of uncertainty, many people get so lost in which direction to move in that they forget to move at all. My advice, then, is to keep moving, keep bettering yourself and don’t be afraid of changing your goals.

In fact, If your goals didn’t change from the constant new perspective you’ve gained, then something is wrong.

There is also danger. There are real wrong decisions. You could create a personalized hell for yourself. In the danger, however, there is the chance you can find something worth all the pain and anxiety.

That’s what I’m trying to do, that’s what everyone should do.

Find something worth it.

Athletes of the week Caleb Walton

Football Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Caleb Walton of the LHU football team has been named the Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Male Athlete of the year.

He earned First Team All-PSAC and landed on the All-Region team. Walton led the PSAC East in passing yards (3,115), passing TDs (21) and TDs Accounted For (26).

Walton was the first quarterback in LHU history to go over 3,000 yards and first LHU QB to earn First Team All-PSAC honors since 1979.

He helped lead LHU to first winning season in divisional play since 1979 and also was named the National Football Foundation Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

The GoLHU.com Athletes of the Year are presented by Susquehanna Trailways, the official Motorcoach Company of LHU Athletics.

Shannon Bissnette

Lacrosse Doug Spatafore Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhvaen.edu Shannon Bissnette of the LHU lacrosse team has been named the Susquehanna Trailways/GoLHU.com Female Athlete of the year.

Bissnette finished the season with 22 goals, 43 assists and 65 points.

She recorded three or more assists in a game on seven occasions.

Bissnette’s 43 assists and 2.53 assists per game ranked fifth in the PSAC. The GoLHU.com Athletes of the Year are presented by Susquehanna Trailways, the official Motorcoach Company of LHU Athletics.

SPORTS Womens Basketball extends win streak, improves 4-1 Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu ALTOONA, Pa. – Rileigh Devine (Etters, Pa./ Red Land) netted a game-high 22 points to lead a balanced scoring approach which powered the Lock Haven University women’s basketball team (4-1) to its third straight win.

Devine was one of four players in double-figures scoring as the Bald Eagles downed host Penn State Altoona (1-2), 94-66.

In all, 10 different players scored for Lock Haven who improved to 4-1 on the season. The 94 points marked the most scored by the Bald Eagles in a win since a 93-57 win over Notre Dame College nearly six years ago to the day (Nov. 28, 2012).

Devine knocked down five 3-pointers on the way to her 22 points. Jalyn Shelton-Burleigh (State College, Pa./State College) netted 14 points, Ahnera Parker (Lancaster, Pa./J.P. McCaskey) scored 12 and Jordyn Kloster (Manchester, Pa./Millersville) added 13 points off the bench. Kloster was solid throughout and finished with five rebounds as well.

Bink Redman (York, Pa./William Penn) and Taylor Leidy (Alexandria, Pa./Juniata Valley) rounded out a strong scoring night from LHU’s starting-five. Redman added eight points and Leidy scored seven. Redman grabbed nine rebounds to pace Lock Haven in that category and Leidy has another versatile stat line, finishing with five assists and three rebounds of her own.

The Bald Eagles moved the ball extremely well tonight on offense and finished with a total of 21 assists.

Lock Haven will return home to host Clarion on Saturday, December 1 at 1 p.m. in the Bald Eagles 2018-19 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener. It will mark the first of backto-back home PSAC contests as LHU will also host Mercyhurst on Sunday (Dec. 2) at 1 p.m.

Cerruti powers Lock Haven past Carlow Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa.- The Lock Haven University men’s basketball team (1-2) downed the Carlow University Celtics (1-7) 96-80 Monday night in Thomas Fieldhouse thanks to a 26 point showing from Matt Cerruti (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./Archbishop Wood).

After a competitive first half the Bald Eagles closed out the half on a 20-4 run to close the half and push their lead to 19. The Haven built up a 51-32 halftime lead and led by as many as 24 in the second half as LHU cruised to the team’s first win of the season, 96-80.

Cerruti’s 26 points led the Bald Eagles offensively. He shot an efficient 10-14 from the field, including 6-9 from beyond the arc, while adding five boards and two assists to complete his night.

Including Cerruti, six Bald Eagles finished in double figures.

Christian Kelly (Phoenixville, Pa./Phoenixville) tallied 15. Jihad Barnes (Philadelphia/Philadelphia Electric Charter) and Jesse McPherson (Philadelphia/Archbishop Wood) both added 13. Jaylen Washington (Frederick, Md./Tuscarora) totaled 11 and Marques Jackson (Philadelphia/Monsignor Bonner) rounded out the scoring chipping in with 10.

Highlighting the defense for the Haven was McPherson and Barnes. McPherson protected the rim all night long and finished with five blocks while Barnes snatched four steals from the Celtics.

Lock Haven finished an effective offensive night shooting 56 percent from the field and shared the ball well, recording 17 assists as a team. Washington led LHU with five assists.

Next Up: The Bald Eagles will host Clarion on December 1st at 3 p.m. at the Thomas Fieldhouse.

Bald Eagles strong at Mat-Town Open, Bell & Reid lead the way Doug Spatafore

Sports Information Director dpatafo@lockhaven.edu LOCK HAVEN, Pa. – Today (Sunday, November 25), the nationallyranked Lock Haven University wrestling team hosted the 13th annual Mat-Town Open Tournament marking the first time this season LHU has competed in the friendly confines of Thomas Fieldhouse. The No. 17 Bald Eagles didn't disappoint as a number of LHU wrestlers finished among the top-four at their respective weight class.

In all, over 80 wrestlers competed in today's tournament and despite most of them competing unattached, over 14 different institutions were represented on the mats.

Leading the way for Lock Haven's unattached contingent of 12 was Isaac Reid (Saltsburg, Pa./ Kiski and Austin Bell (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon).

Reid finished second at 285 pounds and Bell was second in a round-robin style 174-pound bracket.

Reid was 2-1 on the day and he opened the tournament with a pin. In the finals, he was edged 2-1 by Cornell's Brendan Furman.

After opening the day with a loss, Bell rattled off three straight wins to finish the day at 3-1 overall (2nd, 174 (Round Robin)). He registered two majors on the way to the second-place finish.

Dalton Rohrbaugh (Spring Grove, Pa./Spring Grove) and DJ Fehlman (Warren, Pa./Warren) both placed third today at 133 and 141, respectively.

Rohrbaugh was 3-1 with two pins at 133 and he won the third-place bout in thrilling fashion, edging Noah Levett (Bucknell), 7-6.

Fehlman finished third at 141. He opened the day with a major before a tight, 3-2 loss in the quarterfinals. After the loss, Fehlman rattled off four wins which included a pin and three majors.

In the third-place bout, Fehlman majored Penn State's Scott Obendorfer, 18-6. The win avenged Fehlman's only loss of the day, as he lost to Obendorfter, 3-2, in the quarters. Overall, Fehlman finished the day at 5-1 with four majors and a pin.

Breylon Douglas (Youngstown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) was fourth at 184.

Lock Haven will return to action on Friday, November 30 when the Bald Eagles kick off the dual portion of their 2018-19 season. It will be a WHITE OUT Friday when LHU hosts George Mason. The Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) match is set for a 7 p.m. start in Thomas Fieldhouse.
